Popular Danmei Character Tournament
CWs: object insertion, sex, death mention, alcohol, slight spoilers
Bichen from the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Lan Wangji’s sword and main weapon
Sometimes personified (mainly by ZeldaCW, I believe)
Submission: the source of some of the stupidest discourse i have ever seen, and for that I can only applaud it. an icon. a legend. bichen IS the moment. now cmon now
*long-suffering sigh* Yes, this is also the sword Wei Wuxian stuck up his ass in the Incense Burner Extra (Chapter 119). And the sword Wei Wuxian believed Lan Wangji was claiming when he pointed at himself, and Lan Wangji called him, “Mine” (Chapter 31).
Was submitted as a joke and has somehow beaten Jin Guangyao from the same novel. Vote to increase their death count <2
Zhou Zishu from Faraway Wanderers and Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
The MC of Faraway Wanderers / Word of Honor
In Lord Seventh, he works under the Crown Prince Helian Yi as the leader of Tian Chuang
Leaves Tian Chuang, a secret organization under the Crown Prince, after his junior brother (Liang/Qin Jiuxiao) dies, and gets wasted as a beggar until he’s tasked with a young boy named Zhang Chengling’s safety

Qi Ye/Lord Seventh - finished
In no particular order:
Despite how I feel that Wu Xi (Wuxi?) could have been better utilized in the latter half of the novel, on the whole? Wuxi won. He won so hard. He goes as a hostage to a foreign land at eleven years old in order to maintain tenuous peace (and on that note his initial bilingual struggles were so #relatable), then he manages to help keep his love interest safe from thousands of kilometers away via peerless potions skills, then he goes and wins his nation's freedom via martial might and court negotiations, and then he heals his man and gets him home. Like bulletpoint by bulletpoint I think he might have actually managed to accomplish the most out of the cast by the end. And all this while being a 20-something borderline-yandere ML obsessed with his first love. What a man. What a legend. High-five, Wuxi.
Beiyuan!!!! Oh man what an MC. The lives and heartbreaks that he had, the good and the horrific things he did, how he wanted out but at the same time knew that he couldn't... On the whole, after everything, I'm just glad that he eventually gets that peace that he's wanted for this seventh life.
On that note-- listen, I do have some issues with how XiYuan relationship developed in the latter half of the novel--so many times I wanted to smack Wuxi with a fan, and then I wanted to smack Beiyuan with a fan (and then I wanted to do a bit more fan-smacking)--but stepping back and looking at XiYuan from start to end... Wuxi really managed to give Beiyuan everything he wanted, didn't he? Someone to listen to him ramble lecture-mode. A place to be safe in where he doesn't have to scheme for survival anymore. Even a kid.
And on that note: Beiyuan's journey from "What a shame that, despite reincarnating so many times, he had never had his own heirs" to him being a party to the horrific Jiang family massacre (how much he wanted to spare little Jiang Xue, wanted to take her as his daughter, but Helian Yi didn't allow him), and finally to him immediately adopting Wuxi's student as his son. He got it, guys. He finally got the kid he wanted.
He was going to wait again! Like he spent so much of his 7th lifetime chiding himself for waiting for Helian Yi, and then he's like 'you know what? maybe waiting another 60-70 yrs isn't so bad if it's for Wuxi'... and then he didn't have to do any waiting at all because Wuxi was right there! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh my heart
I don't know how to articulate it, but something about how the book hits with a "all that court intrigue and manipulations, and for what? there's an antagonistic army at your borders, how much did that internal scheming actually help your country in the end?"
(This book made me remember why I love 'second love' stories so much. There's something about the concept that's just so...inherently optimistic, I think? So hopeful? Like you think you have nothing left because you had poured out everything loving someone who never prioritized you, you're done, and then all of a sudden the universe just barges in and goes all "you think that was the love story of your life? That??? You fool, the epic love story of your life hasn't even started yet, you have no idea how much devotion you're gonna receive and give, just you wait--")
Faraway wanderers was not in my tbr list but now I might have to read it just to see XiYuan again.
PS: Venomous sable my loooooooove!!!!! <3<3<3<3

My very unofficial official book review for Lord Seventh, now that I've had time to "sit" on it.
Context: I watched 25 eps of Word of Honor before halting to go back and read the novels.
Now my take-aways: On the whole, I truly enjoyed Lord Seventh and at times it moved me emotionally. By the end I was very invested in the protagonist, the Crown Prince (Helian Yi), and Zhou Zishu. The plotline of Jing Beiyuan being reborn and having to deal with all the baggage of his previous 6 life times and the fascinating, fraught relationship w the ex-love of his life... and his decision to still commit himself to supporting the Crown Prince's faction despite all that messy past: fantastic! In another novel, this would be your standard reborn revenge tropes. But that is ABSOLUTELY not at all the dynamic in play here. Best aspect of the novel for me and made it stand out. So many options to walk away cleanly and he never does, until he is certain that the dynasty has been secured. The complicated, deep mutual misunderstanding & distrust between him and Helian Yi... and yet how they never put all that baggage ahead of the duty they feel to the people as a whole... Dedicating themselves to something greater, beyond love, affection, pride, self-satisfaction. Do I admire them? Hell no. These mofos are screwed up and do terrible things. But do I find them compelling af? YES.
"Helian Yi paused, then slowly took a few steps forward. Under the impression that he wanted to say something, Jing Qi leaned over, only to be caught off guard by the other hugging him. A cheek that had been blasted ice-cold by the night wind was pressed close against his neck, as if he was about to be roughly dragged off his steed and firmly forced into Helian Yi’s arms.
The horse took a few tiny steps in place.
Jing Qi was stunned for a second, hand still clutching the reins, and didn’t know how he ought to react. Three hundred years… he had once waited three hundred years just for this hug. Yet, now that he had long refused to wait any longer, he had been put into this awkward position without warning. His shoulders were pulled down low, pushed into the hollow of Helian Yi’s own. It wasn’t the least bit warm, solely causing sorrow to emerge in one’s heart.
If only… if only, in the previous life, you weren’t the Rongjia Emperor, and I wasn’t Prince Nan’ning. "
The relationship between Jing Beiyuan and Zhou Zishu is also so subtly interesting. There is this quiet respect and rapport between them, always. Late night chats and promises to reunite for another drink, another future day. This unspoken understanding of each other so deep that Jing Beiyuan doesn't blame ZZS for bringing forth the charges to set him up for death in the 1st life. tbh if not for watching some WoH first, I probably would have shipped them and hoped for post-canon Get Together fic.
I must admit I just never really got very invested in the romantic subplot in this one. There some nice shippy moments towards the end, when the lil murder teen becomes a safe place for Jing Beiyuan, but they never thrilled me like the couple in Golden Stage, for instance.
I think one problem is, I just finished watching Nirvana in Fire. I was just far more interested in the political plotline and the romance arc was mostly disconnected from it and happening on the sidelines of the action. I have no issues w this narrative choice and it makes thematic sense. Didn't detract from my enjoyment of the novel. It just ended up that I was "ok" with the romance arc. I could see why that's how the protagonist's story ends and I agree it's a happy ending for them. I was satisfied. Just never felt the hype on the canon otp. But I completely see the appeal for others.
I do recommend the novel to anyone who plans to read Faraway Wanderers. He's not the main character but it gives you so much context for where ZZS is coming from and why he would vibe with the Valley Master so well, why he's so lackadaisical about all the chaos and violence happening around him. (And Jing Beiyuan is a WAY more intriguing MC than comes across in Faraway Wanderers. If I'd read that book first, never would have thought I'd love a whole book about that dude lol.)
tmw I'll put together my thoughts on TW 🤔

Just finished Qi ye!! Wow. They are all such horrible people! And so compelling! I read your posts, and your comparison with NiF - it’s giving me so many thoughts! On the one hand NiF is kinder to its protagonists - when they need to kill the sons of corrupt officials, the sons have committed their own crimes, while in QT he is innocent. But it isn’t just that! The line that hit me hardest of the whole book was when Helian Yi realised he’d been fighting for the throne, but done nothing to build
up the country. The opposite of MCS and JY! MCS spends ten years preparing and most of his stratagems also give justice to others while advancing their position. MCS embraces the trolley problem, and hates himself because he would kill one to save the rest, but I think he also understands that the trolley problem is a false dichotomy / who put the person in the road, what safety systems can be put in place to ensure the breaks don’t fail. The QY gang have a much narrower focus - just. Let’s change the driver of the trolley. I’m really interested to see if we see how Helian Yi develops - he had the realisation his thinking is too narrow, will he build on that? Wu Xi is the one who comes out best - he remembers the Gran Shamans words, his main focus appears to be mostly Beiyuan, but he IS thinking about his country all the time, which means he can give both the Shamans reasons and Wu Xi’s reasons to argue for going to save Da Qing. I do love the main couple. Awww you really want This toxic poisonous, pretty creature? Okay Wu Xi you should get him! I also wanted to say thank you for recommending reading Qi ye first - it made the scene in the first chapter of tyk with Helian Yi hit so much harder. (Really hit me in my Jingyan raw spot!)
Ahhh I’m so glad you liked it! I love all the NIF parallels you picked up on - NIF is a much more optimistic story in many ways but both have some very interesting things to say about freedom and court, and though MCS and JY are a million times more honorable and just than anyone in Qi Ye there are interesting similarities. Like you said, JY and HLY both get left alone as Emperor at the end, and also - I think the sacrifice MCS regrets most is what he does to Jingrui, similarly to how what Zhou Zishu regrets most is Jiuxiao, and both cases are not necessarily the worst things they’ve done but involve a loss of innocence (and that Jingrui can mostly come to terms with it and live, while Jiuxiao dies trying to atone for crimes that aren’t even his to bear, is indicative of a core difference in the two: in NIF there is always room for just and honorable people). Then if you’ve seen NIF2 there’s also the Xiao Pingjing and Jing Beiyuan specialty “I’ll save my country when it needs saving but after that I’m out.” I could go on forever comparing the two - they even both end in invasions (and the fact that the Qi Ye invasion is a direct result of our gang’s narrow focus...).
Thanks a lot for these asks! Your thoughts are very interesting and it’s nice to know that you’ve enjoyed my recs! I hope you enjoy TYK as well, because it really just turns everything in Qi Ye on its head in an absolutely baffling way.

Update on Qi Ye. Upto Chapter 31.
1. I LOVE ALL THE MCs SOOOO MUCH. THEY'RE SOOO CUTE.
2. I saw Word of Honor before starting this, so I already have a deep hatred in my heart for Helian Yi. I can see how this novel wants to gain sympathy for him, but I'm NOT HAVING IT. YOU DON'T DESERVE THESE PEOPLE PRINCE JIN!!
3. So the main aim seems to be to get Helian Yi on the Throne instead of his brothers. It's supposedly the only "good" choice, but he ends up just as bad as his brothers would've been.
4. Beiyuan, I love you but you're dumb. Considering how many lifetimes you wasted/suffered for the stupid prince, this miraculous second life..... Roam the world, take a break, DON'T GET INVOLVED IN THE POLITICS!!!!!!!!
But.......... He did have to meet his "Little venom".
Shout out to those who translated this novel for us lowly folk. You guys are angels!!!! Thank you.

Sooo…
I promised my buddy to draw her Apprentice with Asra.
So of course I also had to draw my Helias with Julian, because she made me ship it as well dammit.
Helias and Lina are having a “girl talk moment” (Helias is technically male but doesn’t mind being referred as “they”) and Heli teases her about her crush on Asra.
Naturally Asra and Julian see the two chatting and react accordingly.
Asra thinks Lina is adorable innocent squishbean.
Julian is having a heart-attack for a change.

Shen Zechuan vs. Wang Zhi
Gu Mang vs. Yan Zhengming
Side B
Wenren È vs. Song Qingshi
Yin Hanjiang vs. Wu Xi
Li Yu vs. An Zhe
Cui Buqu vs. Helian Ye
Exempt from Round 1: Yue Wuhuan
Side A of the Popular and Less Popular Danmei Character Tournaments will take place on the same day (Thursday, June 8, 2023) around noon CST and will remain open for 1 week.
Side B Polls will open on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, at noon CST and will remain open for 1 week.
Character Information under the cut (subject to change) - CWs: sex mention, death mention, murder mention, slavery, sexual slavery, rape mention, animal mention, animal death mention, pet death/murder
Side A
Yue Wuhuan from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
A villain saved by the MC who is focused on revenge. The story seems to focuses on trauma recovery from his life as a s*x slave and handles mental health pretty well
Technically a “yandere” character, but the Novel Updates reviews describe his possessiveness and dark thoughts as byproducts of his trauma that he heals from, realizing that he shouldn’t be thinking of the MC that way and growing
“Our ML’s journey embodies a major theme of MSTV, which is about redemption and rebirth. His tragic past shaped him into a cunning, ruthless, manipulative, and obsessive individual. His past and continuing struggle will make your hearts break. It’s a difficult and painful journey of overcoming past trauma, letting go, and subsequently achieving freedom and happiness.” - blackkoi on NU
Yan Hao from Vicious Male Counterpart Isn’t Competing Anymore
Submission: He’s p cute
Yan Hao was jealous of and competed with his younger brother, who seemed to be loved more by their parents. After he dies, however, he realizes he was a villain meant to contrast his kind younger brother and be slapped by the male protagonist. Once he’s reborn, he decides to ignore his brother entirely
“High IQ, low EQ” - Sugaminny on Novel Updates
Honestly, the story sounds super cute and interesting. Yan Hao seems to be a character “hated by everyone” in his past life who can’t figure out how to be loved but does love others a lot, especially in his second life. Skite on NU describes him as autistic and villainized due to his neurodivergency / attempts to be loved and praised (their review words it better, but it sounds super interesting).
Xiao Chiye from Qiang Jin Jiu
Submission: Also an absolutely insane character but somehow not as deranged as his husband, shen zechuan, although he comes pretty damn close. i just wanna cause problems by putting them in the same poll
“VERY cocky and arrogant (sexy of him), but also an extremely talented leader and fighter” - QJJ Carrd
Initially kicks Shen Zechuan, the MC, due to SZC’s father’s treason, but starts to fall in love with him (Enemies → Lovers)
Shen Zechuan from Qiang Jin Jiu
Submission: he just serves absolute cunt and is absolutely insane. like we joke about characters being crazy but shen zechuan is the 1st one where ive paused reading and said outloud oh bitch you are absolutely out of your mind. Give it up for ruthless chronically ill schemers with a sense of loyalty so strong it becomes a fatal flaw and who are also at all times 100% devoted to the ppl they care about
The son of the Prince of Jianxing, who betrays the empire out of cowardice, that must survive when his entire family is to be killed for treason. There’s actually a scene at the beginning of him losing his brother in a battle and (I believe) returning to realize his father has run away
Another of the “chronically ill schemers” type and incredibly ruthless when necessary
Refuses to die or despair; he WILL survive and will turn things around - fate can be damned
Wang Zhi from Fourteenth Year of Chenghua
Submission: Wang Zhi is the emperor's eunuch-assassin who spends the entire book and show crashing the main character's brunches. There's a scene where someone gets confused because they can't fathom why Wang Zhi would show up at someone's house if it's not to murder them. In the series he has a tiny gun.
Gu Mang from Stains of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: He’s my little guy
He’s the tragic ML who betrayed the MC while also being the biggest fucking clown / the comedic relief
He truly believes he’s a fucking wolf at one point.
Essentially, Gu Mang was a slave in Murong Lian’s household, which led him to meet the MC, Mo Xi, who is a noble of similar standing to the Murong clan. He eventually becomes the General-in-Chief of the Wangba Army (later renamed to the Northern Frontier Army bc it was a funny name) and fights for the Chonghua Empire. However, since the Wangba Army was made of slaves, not a single of his fellow soldiers were given a proper burial, which - along with other reasons - led to Gu Mang defecting to an enemy nation (that also killed Mo Xi’s father and may or may not be cannibals).
The story begins when said enemy nation trades Gu Mang back to Chonghua as a prisoner of war with parts of his soul gone, causing him to believe he’s a majestic blue wolf. The summary is a tiny bit misleading, albeit not wrong - “they’ve slept together before” is actually more “they slept together multiple times while Mo Xi, at the very least, is incredibly in love with Gu Mang.”
Gu Mang’s also pretty funny, even with his memories gone, albeit the inherent tragedy is overwhelming. Idc what “evils” he committed… the Lotus Pavilion thing or whatever was fucked up. The author is so brutal to him, and for what? Funsies? (<--mainly joking, but it’s a SAD story… I’ve cried so many times)
Anyway, Gu Mang Did Not Deserve This 2023
Yan Zhengming from Liu Yao: the Revitalization of Fuyao Sect
Submission: Winner of the award for highest number of times I’ve called a man a “pretty princess”
Apparently has a fantastic character development into the Sect Leader (I’m not that far), but he’s also just a pretty princess <2
He’s the eldest disciple of Han Muchun / Fuyao Sect who was born into a rich family. He ran away at age seven and became Han Muchun’s first apprentice/disciple. He’s similar to a spoiled young master character, but he doesn’t really bully anyone; he may try to bully/clash with Cheng Qian, but I don’t think he wins (been a while since I started it - he’s like 15, and Cheng Qian is ~9-10 at this point)
“Strict with others but lenient on himself” → responsible Sect Leader pipeline, More at 10 pm
Side B
Wenren È from Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know
The MC of Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, Wenren È, finds a book that details the world around him where he’s the second male lead / love interest who dies to protect the Female Lead / protagonist. He is not in love with her, and he can’t imagine dying for her as is; he also doesn’t understand why his subordinate, who supposedly likes her as well, tried to kill her after his death. I think he’s tasked with addressing readers’ concerns with the novel, but there’s also a lot more going on lol
Submission 1: unhinged, no idea what romance is, has a feral dog with rabies for a boyfriend and thinks that boyfriend is super cute. Also, middle aged man. I love middle aged men.
Submission 2: Because Look, he is trying to get two characters to fall in love for Important Plot reasons and a: him and his main Minion have to look up what love is like in the shitty romance novels they're characters in, and then b: decide to make the two characters fall in love through the Cunning Use of Bugs. Also he got a copy of the book he is a character in, found out his fate, and was like I Think The Fuck Not.
He also has pretty good morals, if not personality. He’s a much better guy than I expected him to be tbh
Song Qingshi from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
A medical student who chooses to transmigrate into a sad Danmei novel to save the protagonist. He does not save the protagonist - he saves a cannon fodder villain named Yue Wuhuan.
“Has a lack of understanding of social situations/an odd personality” - past submission (Danmei Tournament)
Very intelligent but dense to love and s*x; book smart; passionate about what he likes
Yin Hanjiang from Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know
Submission 1: He’s my little scrunkly
Submission 2: He’s my evil wife.
Yin Hanjiang is the second-in-command of the current Demon Lord Wenren È and the fourth male lead of Abusive Romance: You are the Unchanging One in My Heart, a novel Wenren È reads. In the novel, Yin Hanjiang blackens and tries to kill the female lead after Wenren È’s death.
You would think Wenren È would be the craziest mf in this story, but it is, in fact, Yin Hanjiang. In the original novel, he tortured/chased the FL for quite a while to the point of being one of - if not the most - hated villains in the story; he was originally masked and revealed in a completely unseen twist, I believe.
He was saved by Wenren È as a child and is obsessed with him, although their relationship changes more to friends than boss-subordinate WAY before they get together.
Wu Xi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Submission: He is the roundworm in my stomach
Qi Ye tells the story of Prince Jing Beiyuan’s seventh life, which is a repeat of his first life. Wu Xi is the Great Shaman’s Shamanet and the Empire’s captive from Nanjiang who did not appear in Jing Beiyuan’s first life.
From what I remember, he uses something similar to magic to make a court official become aroused / see a beautiful woman and embarrass himself in front of the entire court. As a child.
He also has a vast array of dangerous and venomous animals, one of which he gifts to Jing Beiyuan after they become friends.
Li Yu from Disabled Tyrant’s Pet Palm Fish
Submission: He’s infuriating and I love him, also helped create equal rights in ancient china
Li Yu transmigrated into a carp tasked with stealing a mute tyrant’s heart (by the system). He does not know how he’s supposed to do this, but the tyrant - Mu Tianchi - is waiting for him to transform into a human, already in love(?) with him.
The reviews on Novel Updates are… mainly unflattering… but he appears to be a naive and sweet character with in a fluffy love story with the ML, Mu Tianchi
An Zhe from Little Mushroom
Submission 1: honest to god, he’s just a little mushroom
Submission 1: he’s just a little mushroom
An optimistic mushroom mutated into a human trying to find his stolen spores
“An Zhe is the only person who wholeheartedly believes in Lu Feng [the ML]” - Carrd
Cui Buqu from Peerless
Submission: He’s mean, he’s disabled and unapologetic about it, he’s a genius and all his braincells escape him when faced with his rival, he’s a secret agent and has no martial arts, he’s deeply in love and will never say so unless pushed, he will liken his rival to his sun and then tell him he’s the most annoying person he’s ever met. He’s a bastard little fox <3
Helian Yi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Qi Ye tells the story of Prince Jing Beiyuan’s seventh life, which is a repeat of his first life. All of his first five lives have been tied to Helian Yi - he helped him ascend the throne in their first life, he was an insect crushed by Helian Yi in his second life, he was a beloved dog killed to feed Helian Yi’s family in his third life, he was a neglected jasmine plant in his fourth life, he was a fox skinned by Helian Ye in his fifth life - but in the first and seventh lives, Helian Yi’s the Crown Prince of the Jin Empire while Jing Beiyuan is the Prince Nan’ning (a title; he’s not related to Helian Yi as far as I know). In their seventh life, Helian Yi seems to be treating him very well (from what I’ve read), but he’s not the love interest.
He’s also in Faraway Wanderers (for, like, one chapter) and technically is Prince Jin in Word of Honor (but they’re pretty much completely different characters). Zhou Zishu is his most trusted aid who formed Heaven’s Window and then left.
Idk, I haven’t gotten that far in Qi Ye; he sounds like the villain, but he’s really just Sad - Idk if he’s in love with Jing Beiyuan or what, but he’s SAD, okay? From what I can tell, he cares for Jing Beiyuan but can’t be with him because of his position as Crown Prince, but don’t quote me on that
“In that instant, Helian Yi suddenly wanted to take him into his arms, suddenly wanted to wholly throw out and disregard the home, nation, and world that weighed down on his mind and body, no longer brooding on and wishing for a liaison he didn’t dare to have. He wanted to say, from now on, come earthly blades of wind and swords of frost, I will do everything I can to block them or you. There is only one person in this life and this world for me, even without this extensive, partially mountainous, mostly oceanic king’s land.” - Source

Popular Danmei Character Tournament
CWs: animal mention, animal disection/death mention, suggestive language, death, alcohol consumption
Shen Qingqiu / Shen Yuan from Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Submission: He needs to be dissected like a crayfish and studied under a microscope (he’s one of the handful of danmei characters ik)
There’s something Deeply Wrong with this man
He INVENTED unreliable narrators, baby, and he’s here to STAY (if you believe his inner voice)
His mental gymnastics to make everything STRAIGHT and HETEROSEXUAL deserve a reward tbh
“Most homophobic gay person”
Reads bad erotica and then complains about the plot inconsistencies
Zhou Zishu from Faraway Wanderers and Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
The MC of Faraway Wanderers / Word of Honor
In Lord Seventh, he works under the Crown Prince Helian Yi as the leader of Tian Chuang
Leaves Tian Chuang, a secret organization under the Crown Prince, after his junior brother (Liang/Qin Jiuxiao) dies, and gets wasted as a beggar until he’s tasked with a young boy named Zhang Chengling’s safety
