I chose the alley stage because while listening to the play I pictured gallimards reflections as stemming from his jail cell and with each scene he would be walking down the alley while the different characters appeared to him whether it be on the pathway, the stairs, or in his jail cell. The lights would turn on depending on where gallimard was on stage and change colors depending on the mood of the scene. I think this play calls for minimalism in the set to really take in the scenes and what is happening in them. The costumes and the props would be eye-catchers as well.

I think we are all very much aware of the hype surrounding Li Shang, the male interest of the titular female protagonist Mulan (1998).
According to Park (2013), Asian American males are viewed as "effeminate, asexual and passive and popular cultural representations appear to only confirm this perception", thus, it was surprising to see a guy, a fictional one, with prominent east asian features was receiving attention from women and men of different ethnicities and racial backgrounds.
Li Shang is hyper masculine and superior in both status and physicality compared to most of the male characters in the film. He portrays Asian men in a different light from their usual media depiction in the U.S as submissive, nerdy, powerless, or perverts (ohh you know which films I'm talking about).
As David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly demonstrates, "Because Song(main protagonist) is Asian, he would always be viewed as feminine by westerners. The West, he asserts, views the East as weak and in need of protection".
This inherent weakness associated with a whole race when juxtaposed with the portrayal of Li Shang to the non-Asian American population creates a sort of amusement and elevated interest which can be see on twitter and other social media to this day; Li Shang is hailed as a 'childhood Disney crush" and "a bisexual icon" by many.

M Butterfly dialogues
[opening scene]
Gallimard: Butterfly, Butterfly...
[ending scene]
Song (smoking a cigarette): Butterfly? Butterfly?
Act 3, Scene 2
Gallimard: You showed me your true self. When all I love was the lie. A pefect lie—
-
Gallimard: Yes I do! I knew all the time somehwere that my happiness was temporary, my love a deception. But my mind kept the knowledge at bay. To make the wait bearable.
-
Gallimard: Tonight, I've finally learned to tell fantasy from reality. And, knowing the difference, I choose fantasy.
Act 2, Scene 8
Song: I’m happy. Which often looks like crazy.
-
Act 2, Scene 7
Song: Miss Chin? Why, in the Peking Opera, are women’s roles played by men?
Chin: I don’t know. Maybe, a reactionary remnant of male—
Song: No. Because only a man knows how a woman is supposed to act.
Lastly, my favourite.
Act 3, Scene 1
SONG: Rule One is: Men always believe what they want to hear. So a girl can tell the most obnoxious lies and the guys will believe them every time— “This is my first time” — “That’s the biggest I’ve ever seen” — or both, which, if you really think about it, is not possible in a single lifetime. You’ve maybe heard those phrases a few times in your own life, yes, Your Honor?
SONG: Rule Two: As soon as a Western man comes into contact with the East — he's already confused. The West has sort of an international rape mentality towards the East. Do you know rape mentality?
...Basically, “Her mouth says no, but her eyes say yes.”
The West thinks of itself as masculine — big guns, big industry, big money — so the East is feminine — weak, delicate, poor... but good at art, and full of inscrutable wisdom — the feminine mystique.
Her mouth says no, but her eyes say yes. The West believes the East, deep down, wants to be dominated — because a woman can't think for herself.
You expect Oriental countries to submit to your guns, and you expect Oriental women to be submissive to your men. That’s why you say they make the best wives.
David Henry Hwang, M. Butterfly

"I am an Oriental. And being an Oriental, I could never be completely a man." Song Liling, Act 3, Scene 1, M. Butterfly
I thought the quote accompanied by these striking images from the broadway show starring B. D Wong and John Lithgow adapted from David Henry Hwang's 1988 play titled M. butterfly should be a fitting first post on this account which will explore asian masculinity.
I am aware of the broadness of the topic which was why I initially wanted to focus on masculinity amongst AA in the U.S, but the wide array of materials present on the internet encouraged me to make this journey an ongoing project in the form of continued learning and sharing of knowledge beyond the period of my social work Practice Lab course for which I created this account in the first place.
I hope this space will provide a deeper understanding and exposure to both the past and current media and literature surrounding AA masculinity; I will also incorporate how the intersection of both race and gender further define AA masculinity.
David Henry Hwang is an American playwright, librettist, screenwriter, and theater professor at Columbia University in New York City.

So this is pretty interesting. Around the time of M. Butterfly’s release, another film, #neiljordan ‘s #cryinggame turned out to be a heavy hitter and people were expecting the same from M. “The twist of an audience fooled by a woman who was really a man” was the popular theme and M was expected to fall in line with that idea. Upon watching the documentary on the making of the film, one thing that was perfectly clear from the beginning for all who were involved in the production of Butterfly was that everyone KNEW Butterfly was a man. The opening credits following Jeremy Irons name was John Lone- the audience was meant to know as well. The Chinese opera was historically and traditionally men portraying women to express whatever China’s societal oppression disallowed. Ultimately, the only person who outright REFUSES to believe Butterfly is a man is Jeremy Irons character, as he cannot accept the fact that he’s in love with an interpretation of “woman” from the perspective of his own delusion of what the “Chinese subservient woman” should be. This revelation in and of itself is quite in line with Cronenberg’s themes of identity, sex, and bodily transformation- but released in quite the inopportune time. A shame really, because at its core M is far deeper than the “twist movie” that became so popular from that time on. #mbutterfly #jeremyirons #davidcronenberg #johnlone #1993
