Thinking about dad!Price who got upset because his baby daughter was crying and screaming bloody murder while running away from him
The pitter-patter of her little feet on the carpet was eclipsed by her wailing as she dashed to you who were busy making dinner
Tiny hands clutching your legs while she hid behind them. You looked down before lifting her up to carry in your arms and trailed your gaze towards your husband
He shaved
The signature beard was gone, making him look like another person
Unrecognizable to your daughter
You bit your bottom lip to stifle your laughter as you comforted the little girl. Failing to do so and giggled when she started squirming as you walked over to your husband who sported a similar pout to his precious princess

Peter Usborne, who has died aged 85, created a publishing company that changed the look and feel of nonfiction books for children. Although they were widely used in schools, Usborne books became a household brand, particularly associated with finding things out at home, through attractive illustrated, fact-filled publications that entertained children with high-quality pictures and accessible bites of information.
Before his publishing career, Peter was a co-founder in 1961 and the first managing director of the satirical magazine Private Eye. It grew out of a humorous magazine called Mesopotamia that Peter launched while a student at Balliol College, Oxford, with fellow students, among them John Wells and Richard Ingrams, as writers. On graduating, he used his best networking skills to secure funding to get the magazine launched, but left in 1965 to study for an MBA at the Insead (Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires) business school in Fontainebleau, France.
In 1964 he had married Cornelie Tücking and they went on to have two children, Nicola and Martin. Peter said that he had wanted to publish books for children from the moment he knew that he was going to be a father. In 1969, working for a publishing company, British Printing Corporation (BPC), as assistant to the chair, he asked to change tack and work in children’s books instead. He was given a publishing role at Macdonald Education in 1970, and his launch series was Macdonald Starters, a list of nonfiction titles for very young children that combined attractive but simple illustrations with a few words of text. They were conceived for the schools market, and designed to satisfy children’s boundless curiosity and need for answers to their questions. He eschewed subject specialists and instead used writers – including himself – who were able to communicate ideas easily and to make information-sharing lively.
After two years, Peter felt he had learned enough to set up his own company and in 1973 he launched Usborne Publishing, spurred on by the birth of his son. Peter described parenting as the “greatest gift” he had ever been given. Drawing on the model he had created at Macdonald Education, using in-house writers, illustrators and designers, Peter made sure Usborne Publishing could grow fast from secure foundations. Series such as the Know How books and the touchy-feely series That’s Not My … (now numbering 72 titles) became staples of the list. His infectious enthusiasm for the books brought great loyalty from the Usborne staff, who enjoyed the range of creative roles they were able to take on, as well as Peter’s sense of them as part of his extended family.
The quality of Usborne Publishing books, their recognisable look, their affordable cover price and the fact that they lived up to their ambition of making learning fun ensured they became a key part of childhood for many. For those who did not have easy access to bookshops, Peter set up a scheme through which Usborne books could be sold at local community events and gatherings.
When Robert Maxwell acquired BPC in 1981, Peter swiftly bought back the small stake that BPC had taken in Usborne Publishing. In 1995 he sold 26% of the company to Scholastic. It has continued to grow and now has an annual turnover in excess of £100m.
Peter never lost his own boundless curiosity or his belief in his motto for the company – “Do it better”. He remained involved with the business, latterly as chair, working in partnership with his daughter, who joined the company in 2015 and became CEO in 2022. Peter was appointed MBE in 2011, advanced to CBE in 2022. He received the London Book Fair lifetime achievement award in 2015, and Usborne Publishing was celebrated as publisher of the year in both 2012 and 2020.
He had always intended that Usborne Publishing would have a philanthropic programme. With his children, he set up the Usborne Foundation in 2008 with funds to be granted to education and health projects. The foundation has created sophisticated tech games based on the foundations of literacy learning, and accessible for children who struggle to read; and developed a literacy-based ebook series, Teach Your Monster to Read.
Imposingly tall, even when stooped by ankylosing spondylitis, a spinal condition with which he was diagnosed in his 30s, mildly spoken and with a boyish enthusiasm for books and their readers, Peter was a benign presence in children’s publishing. His generosity as a host of memorable parties and celebrations – most recently for 50 years of Usborne Publishing at the Bologna book fair in March – helped to generate huge affection for him and for Usborne.
Peter was born in Hampstead, London, the son of Thomas Usborne, a senior civil servant, and his German-born wife Gerda (nee Just). The family moved to Weybridge, Surrey, when Peter was a child and he was sent to school at Summer Fields, Oxford, and then Eton college; and from there went to Balliol.
His marriage to Cornelie ended in divorce in 1995. He is survived by his second wife, Wendy (nee Browning), whom he married in 2012, by Nicola and Martin, and by five grandchildren, Jesse, Caspar, Max, Olive and Hazel.

E.E. Ward Moving and Storage, recognized by the Department of Commerce as the oldest continuously operating Black-owned business in the US was founded in 1881 by William Ward and his father, John T. Ward. The company’s beginning included two helpers, a team of horses, and a wagon.
It was first called the Ward Transfer Line. It was called Ward Storage and Transfer Company. By 1899 it adopted its current name, E.E. Ward Transfer and Storage Company, after John T. Ward’s grandson Edgar Earl took over the business. The company continued its commitment to reflect the mission of its founders, to provide quality services at fair prices. Family members were both owners and employees of the company.
By 1910 the company no longer used horse-powered vehicles as it expanded its clientele from families moving their furniture and household items to serving the needs of Columbus-area businesses and factories. It continued its tradition of family ownership, however. Eldon Ward, William’s grandson and John’s great-grandson was the last direct descendant of the founders to own the company after he joined in 1945. By the early 21st century, Brian A. Brooks, the godson of Eldon Ward, and Otto Beatty III, the son of Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, were owners of the company.
They are now a nationally recognized leader in the transportation and relocation industry. The company specializes in commercial, employee, and household relocation, as well as warehousing and customized logistics. It has earned numerous honors for exceptional service and historical achievement, including the Super Service Award from Angie’s List; MBE Supplier of the Year Award; Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council); Torch Award for Ethics, from the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio, North American Van Lines Driver of the Year; Corporate Caring Human Services Award from Columbus Business First); Outstanding Diverse Organization Award from Columbus Business First); Moving and Storage Agent of the Year Service Excellence Award from the American Moving and Storage Association); and the North American Van Lines Power of Blue Team of the Year. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Remembrance 2024

On Monday, we held our annual Remembrance assembly, which is always a poignant and moving service. As a community, we join together to reflect on the sacrifice made by former pupils and staff and to remind ourselves about our responsibility to encourage peace and reconciliation.
Almost 800 former pupils and staff served In World War 1 and 109 did not return. In the Second World War, another 700 former pupils and staff served, but 98 did not return. Their names are recorded on the Memorial at the back of the Main School Hall. Each year, to help us reflect during the service, the Deputy School Captains tell us a little more about two of the people listed on our Memorial. I would like to share the stories of those we heard about on Monday so that you, as part of the wider Bablake community, can also Remember.
Lance Sergeant Henry Smith Craven

Lance Sergeant Henry Smith Craven was born on 22nd February 1892 and lived with his parents and four sisters in Spencer Road, Earlsdon. While at Bablake, he proved himself to be a superb defender in football and excelled at batting in cricket. After school, he secured an apprenticeship into the Civil Service, having come ninth out of over 1500 entrants in the examination. A man of ambition, he wanted to be at the opening of the Panama Canal and did so by working as a purser on a boat. The opening was delayed until August 15th, 1914 and one of Henry’s roles was to announce, in four languages, that war had broken out. The remainder of the return journey was spent avoiding German submarines.
In early 1916, he had a brief period back in Coventry, as he had been injured. During this time, he became engaged to be married to Miss Carrie Morgan, the daughter of a Bablake teacher. Miss Morgan was to become Headmistress of Moseley Primary School for many years and she was awarded an MBE for her care for pupils during the Coventry Blitz.
After returning to the front line, Henry was killed in Northern France on March 6th 1916. He was 24. His body was never identified, but he is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, which is situated in Loos-en-Gohelle, on our Memorial and on a plaque in the Memorial Park.
When he was home, he wrote the following poem, which was published in The Wheatleyan:
No more except in dreams,
Or in those haunting visions of the past,
Which soon dissolve in air, yet while they last
Bear all the imprint of reality.
No more shall we at night
By cloud-veiled moonbeams’ misty light
Bury in earth the silent dead, or bear
The wounded comrades, groaning back to where
There’s healing and security.
All these are over now.
Their price in flesh and blood alone is paid.
The pleasures of the heart and mind are made
More glorious in their fateful loss, and here
Mid sylvan glades where English red deer run,
And beeches redden in the Autumn sun
The soul renews its purity
Regretting nought, I think with awe and pride
Of you who follow, you who still must fight.
Cecil Henry Bland Mason (Musician)

Cecil was born in 1920 and lived in Glendower Avenue, Allesley Park. After leaving school, he worked as an accountant for the Council before joining the Royal Navy when the war started.
In 1942, he was one of 15 bandsmen serving on the HMS Trinidad. The ship was part of a convoy in the Arctic, delivering essential supplies to Russia. This was a very dangerous mission due to the proximity of German air, submarine and surface forces, the likelihood of severe weather, the frequency of fog, the strong currents, drift ice and difficulty of navigation.
While escorting Convoy PQ 13 in March 1942, the Trinidad was in combat with some German destroyers. She launched a torpedo attack, but one of her torpedoes had a fault, possibly affected by the icy waters and subzero conditions common in the Atlantic enroute to Russia; this caused the torpedo to travel in an arc and hit the Trinidad. The explosion ruptured a bulkhead, flooding the transmitting station where most of the bandsmen were on duty and killing 17 men, including Cecil.
In 2013, the HMS Trinidad March, written specifically for the ship by Royal Marines Bandsman George Lloyd and regularly performed by Cecil, was revived at the Last Night of the Proms in the presence of John ‘Jack’ Farrow, the last surviving crewman from HMS Trinidad.
Cecil’s body was recovered when the ship underwent temporary repairs, and he was buried at sea off the coast of North Russia. He is remembered on our Memorial and on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Price x f!reader
Thinking about Price going fishing with a shirt saying "Women love me, fish fear me", a stupid gift his team bought for him as a joke.
He didn't even know why he was wearing it, probably didn't think twice about what he was wearing since he'd be spending the day fishing alone anyway.
At least that's what he thought.
Until he saw you, a pretty thing that he thought only existed in fairytales. Your delicate face glowed under the sunlight, soft skin glistening with the sea’s embrace before fading into shimmering, iridescent scales.
A mermaid.
As he was busy thinking if Johnny put anything in his cigar and questioned reality, you blinked at him and giggled, eyeing the words on his shirt.
"So.. should should i do half and half, or?" You asked cheekily.
What a way to meet his future wife..

Thoughts on Charlotte Tilbury's make-up
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charlotte Tilbury, MBE (@charlottetilbury) In my humble opinion, it’s not worth the hype or price tag. I tried out her Hollywood Glow booster primer the formula is so thick and Gloopy absolutely hated it so oily on my skin had to resist the urge to wash it off all the time the smell was awful and definitely wouldn’t buy anything from this brand ever.

Building on success
Paul Lai is one of MBE UK & Ireland’s longest-serving franchise partners. He started his career in distribution, managing warehouses and inventory, and had been running a sub-Post Office and office supplies business before he opened his Letchworth centre in September 1999.

Paul, who has a master’s degree in distribution and graduated as an industrial engineer, explains that he had been developing a plan of something very similar to the MBE business model, which is why he was initially attracted to the franchise opportunity. Then, as now, the mix of print and copy, mailbox rental, shipping and courier services provided a broad appeal for businesses and consumers alike. “That’s why I decided that instead of doing it on my own, I would go with MBE,” says Paul.
He enjoyed the challenge of running his Letchworth store. “Back then, my intention was never to open other stores. I just wanted to make sure I stayed connected with how the business was run.” Talking about the changes he has seen since 1999, Paul says. “It has changed over time, of course. But when I first started, MBE was going down the route of automation. Now, of course, automation is coming back, so in some ways it feels as though we have gone full circle.
“In economic terms, I think things are similar now to the way they were in the late 90s. But one of the challenges we face today is that there are a lot of copycats in the marketplace.” Key differentiators for MBE are its 140+ high-street centres offering the biggest choice of leading carriers, together with specialist services such as the design of both digital and physical marketing resources, plus its white-glove Auction Logistics offering for buyers and sellers of fine art, antiques and collectables.

Spotting an opportunity
Paul’s knowledge and expertise as a franchise partner led to his becoming an area developer for MBE’s northern home counties group of stores.
“I support all new franchise partners during the period leading up to the opening of their stores and give them ongoing support. We do get a lot of interest, and it’s a case of ensuring applicants understand what’s involved, the work they need to put in, and how they can build their business into something that will bring them the income they’re looking for.
“There are a lot of opportunities right now, as some of the longer-established franchise partners are coming up to retirement.” As an entrepreneur, Paul keeps his eye on the property market, which is how he spotted that a shop in Northampton was coming up for sale. “It was in the right location at a reasonable price, so I grabbed it,” he explains.
“The location means it has a lot of potential to become a high-performing store. The community in Northampton is very loyal to local businesses and they do prefer to buy locally if possible. People there are very friendly and they value the businesses that are prepared to build lasting relationships with them. Gold Street, where the new store is located, used to be the high street in Northampton. It’s still a great location with lots of thriving stores, which means it has plenty of footfall. With a university about three miles down the road and lots of local businesses, this location has plenty of potential.”
Paul’s advice to new MBE franchise partners looking to create a successful centre is that strong relationships are key success. “Build relationships not only with your customers, but across the whole business,” he says.
“Whether you are looking to open a new centre or acquire an existing one, the energy you put into sales prospecting, coupled with support from your area developer and MBE head office teams, will help your business grow more quickly.
“Tap into all the seminars and training that are offered by the head office team and make the most of all their marketing activity. And finally, remember to watch your cashflow. That’s vital.”
MBE Northampton opens on 9th October. To find out more about the store, including the full address, telephone number and opening times, click here.

Custom Medals Australia

A bronze medal awarded to a winner of an athletic event or a silver medal awarded to a winner of an academic competition is a symbol of national pride. Winners of these prestigious awards are supposed to be honored and celebrated by their countrymen. However, some people choose to subvert this convention by creating their own medals for unconventional reasons. For example, soldiers who've fought in wars create medals to honor their fallen comrades. Other people create medals for children who've completed a certain task or for parents who've raised happy and healthy children. Essentially, medals can be used to commemorate any important life event.

The memory of a lost loved one can be honored through the creation of a medal by the surviving members of the deceased person's family. These family medals often take the form of jewelry or pins that are worn on the person's chest at military funerals and other memorial services. These medals mimic the bronze or silver discs that government officials use to commend exceptional citizens. However, there is nothing legally stopping families from wearing these 'private' medals in public. Regardless of why people wear these family medals, they have become an accepted part of our cultural tradition.
Children also create their own 'custom' medals to commemorate significant events in their lives. For example, if a child completes a difficult task, that child can make a medal to honor his teacher or parents for ensuring he had enough food at dinner that night. Or if a child loses a pet he's had for many years, he can make a medal to honor his deceased pet on his birthday after he's mourned her or him enough time to remember her or him personally. These are just two examples of how one small child chose to commemorate an important event in his life with his own unique medal creation.
Medals have many uses beyond honoring winners and commemorating historic events. People use medals to commemorate any accomplishment they want to celebrate; families make custom medals for children; and soldiers commemorate the sacrifices made by comrades in war. Since each person has unique ways of using awards, no award will ever truly be out of place or overlyutilized in the true sense of the word 'acknowledge.'
