FOTD #131 : oak mazegill! (daedalea quercina)
oak mazegill (also maze-gill fungus) is a polypore & brown rot in the family fomitopsidaceae. it is found in africa, north america, asia & europe, where it forms saprotrophic associations.
the big question : can i bite it?? nah, this fungus is inedible due to the fact that it is tough & "cork-like" in texture !! however, it has been historically used as a natural comb.
d. quercina description :
"the sessile, fan-shaped fruiting bodies are typically 3–20 centimetres (1.2–7.9 in) in diameter and up to 8 centimetres (3.1 in) thick. they are found singly or in tiered groups, usually on rotting oak. the upper surface of the cap may be various shades of brown, & is sometimes zonate. the pore surface, white to tan in colour, is initially porous, but as the fruit body matures, some of the pore walls break down, forming slits with blunt partitions. this results in the characteristic maze-like (daedaloid or labyrinthinine/labyrinthiform) appearance. the tube walls are 1030 mm long, with thick walls."

Not yet edited version of a piece I plan to use over on one of my side blogs! Funny silly passion project about dragons I used to post on Amino in a species, but I made them alternate, non-species designs for my story purposes (hurray! :)) and the amino got dumped (yippee! :D) so I gotta reignite it all here. It’s gonna be, like, worldbuilding stuff to keep me motivated and writing about it as prep for the comic I want to make eventually. Even if I don’t get to make the comic for one reason or another, it’ll be really fun just to toss this stuff out there again. :) Real fan of not being plagued by fictional stories so big and developed that putting them on the page is an insurmountable task.
BUT, posting it here until I can 1.) edit the image properly, and 2.) prepare and write the stuff that goes with it lmfao. After that, a better quality version will be on the side blog, I guess.
If you’re curious, from left to right we’ve got Hawthorn, Rose, Clematis, Fern, Copperhead, Bluebird, and Mazegill.
I really enjoyed painting the tree.

walked over to this stump for the oak mazegill (Daedalea quercina) but discovered a whole community of critters! The snail wasn't quite sure how to get past the ants and ended up taking a detour.

Oh snap, A whole ton of character designs because I felt like making temporary reference sheets.
All of these are technically redesigns! I’ve gotten most to all of my designs through trades in the Mochi Raptors community, and I wanted to redesign them out of the species to use in this story! Credit to their original designers can be found in the Toyhouse that’ll be linked below their respective images.
These are all mostly background/supporting character designs, or I otherwise wouldn’t want to explain before doing actual explanations. Plus I’m tired, haha. Just wanted to share these here so I don’t completely forget.
Images below the cut because it’s a lot 💀
Famine and Maggot! Two little lads with a lot of spunk! Unfortunately, Famine has a high tendency to be sick, so she’s a little scrawny.
Frog and Toad! They are not related.
Catclaw and Pansy, who are related.
Mazegill and Cedar, who’s images I’m pairing together only because they’re both orange.
Gneiss and Morel, because green.
Quince and Aloe. These guys don’t even know each other.
And the final four, Firethorn, Ant, Rose, and Clematis. Three babies and a grown man.

Ege-labyrintsvamp (Daedalea quercina)
Almindeligt forekommende.
Oak Mazegill (Daedalea quercina)
The compact, often clustering Oak Mazegill if found on stumps and fallen trunks most typically of oak (Qercus) - as indicated by its latin name quercina - but also those of beech (Fagus) and Chestnut (Castanea).
The fungus not easily confused with other species due to its coarse, labyrinthine pores.
Common.
