I feel like when you say you're a car nerd, people assume you're either into sportscars/racecars or, like... I don't know what to call the other category. Classic cars? I dunno. I just know that people go wild over cars that aren't currently made and I haven't ever really looked into the reasons why but I'm sure they make sense once you have the right background.
But anyway, there is also a third option? Because I just found out about the Kia Niro PHEV, and man is that a fascinating car. It's far from perfect, but it really seems to hit a sweet spot of market segments that none of the other manufacturers seem to offer (in the US).
Like, look. Say you don't have kids, you want a car, and you're financially well-off enough to follow the Sam Vimes boots principle. You probably want to have at least 4 seats in your car that are actually, legitimately comfortable for adults, yeah? Kind of limiting not to. But beyond that, unless you have specific needs there's no reason to have a larger, more expensive, or less fuel efficient (and thus more expensive, in the long run) car than that. If you can afford the upfront cost, you want to be able to do 80% of your driving trips on electricity because CO2 bad (so, PHEV or EV), but ideally the upfront cost isn't exorbitant. You want to be able to do long trips without borrowing a different car or something, so the range on long trips should be good (no super-short-range EVs, though these days they're all solid) and if you're doing them on gas you still want to be efficient. In a perfect world, your car drives/accelerates well even though it's fuel efficient, it isn't ugly as sin (though you'll likely have to deal with some "I'm an electric vehicle" styling, rip), and you're not handing money to Elon Musk.
The way I see it, we're either okay with a full electric vehicle and the limitations that come with that (I haven't looked into them lately, but presumably something like a Bolt or Ioniq), or we're not. And if we're not... then basically we just want a Prius Prime but normal-shaped, so you don't hit your head on the ceiling, and somehow without a higher price tag or a significant reduction in efficiency. Oh wait, that exists. Wild. I mean, I expected and would honestly have been fine with fuel economy in the mid-30s since you should be on electricity most of the time anyway, but okay, sure, I will take forty eight miles per gallon, yes please, Kia are you cheating on the EPA tests you have to tell me if you're cheating on the EPA tests.
So, yeah. But anyway I feel like when you say you're a car nerd you mean... not like this. So I'm never sure how to, you know, get that across.
(Aside: if you do have a big family and want to throw a lot of money at a super nice electrified 7-seater without actively throwing money away, the Pacifica PHEV and Mazda CX-90 PHEV seem like really interesting options in the absence of a hypothetical Toyota Sienna Prime/Toyota-Highlander-Prime-that's-not-a-Lexus. Another US market segment with a lot of missing options at the moment. Did you know the base model Sienna is a hybrid now, though? That's neat.)

Watch "mazda CX 60 (2023) vs CX-90 (2024) which hybrid suv to buy?" on YouTube
youtube
THE CX-60 is certainly worthy of the adjective “ambitious”. For Mazda, it signals several things at once: it’s the first to use the company’s all-new longitudinal architecture, the first to apply electrification to its full range of engines, the first to feature an inline-six powerplant and the first to offer a plug-in hybrid option. #mazdacx60 vs #mazdacx90 #googlesearch
And, with an ambitious price range that begins at $59,800 and tops out at $87,252, the CX-60 will also launch Mazda into the premium sphere.
Considering its silhouette is only fractionally larger than the CX-5 – it measures 165mm longer and 45mm wider, with an identical 1680mm overall height – the CX-60 is pitched as a premium alternative to Mazda’s ultra-popular mid-sized SUV rather than its replacement.

Mazda's CX-70: Luxury Downsized or Just a CX-90 in Disguise?_NEWS from Test Miles on Vimeo.
Mazda has decided to make a bold move with its latest offering, the 2025 Mazda CX-70, shrinking the larger CX-90's ambitious design into what may just be the right size for those not needing a caravan-sized vehicle. Priced between $40,445 and $55,950, this mid-size luxury SUV straddles the fine line between the more compact CX-50 and its bigger brother, the CX-90, seemingly tailored for those who've bid farewell to the bustling household era and now revel in the quiet after the storm.
At the heart of the CX-70's charm is a choice of two engines. The traditionalists can opt for the robust 3.3-liter six-cylinder, or, for the eco-minded, a plug-in hybrid that promises efficiency with a 2.5-liter engine paired with an electric motor, whipping up 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The latter not only caters to the green-hearted but does so with gusto, boasting up to 56 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and covering 26 miles purely on electric zeal—a perfect companion for city sprints and countryside jaunts alike.
As we delve deeper, the CX-70, which begins at a premium entry price of $54,400 for the PHEV Premium trim, doesn’t shy away from showing off its sophisticated attire. Available in eye-catching hues like Soul Red Crystal and Zircon Sand Metallic, it stands proudly on available 21-inch wheels, framed by a striking wide front fascia and black contrasting accents. It's quite the looker but doesn't just play to the gallery. Inside, the cabin mirrors the upscale ambiance of the CX-90, adorned with options such as black upholstery festooned with gold stitching or sumptuous red Nappa leather, all underpinned by Mazda’s commitment to ergonomic and aesthetic finesse.
But it's not just about looks or lounging in luxury. The CX-70 is as practical as it is plush. Absent a third row, it offers a spacious cargo area, complete with remote-folding rear seats and hooks for bags—ideal for those who travel with more than just a briefcase. The technological suite is nothing to scoff at either. A 12.3-inch central infotainment display ensures connectivity and control are at your fingertips, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an array of driver-assistance systems including radar cruise control and a novel unresponsive driver support system.
Competing head-on with the likes of the Honda Passport and Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, Mazda’s trimmed-down transporter raises a compelling argument: does bigger necessarily mean better? In the arena of mid-sized SUVs, where every inch and option is scrutinized, the CX-70 presents a contrarian viewpoint that less might indeed be more, particularly for the discerning empty nester or the environmentally conscious driver.
Despite some naysayers describing the CX-70 as a possibly lukewarm makeover of the CX-90, the optimism surrounding its driving dynamics and high-quality interior suggests that Mazda may just have trimmed the fat rather than the muscle. So, while it might not be reinventing the wheel, with the CX-70, Mazda reinforces that sometimes, a little less is exactly enough.

2024 Mazda CX-90 pricing starts at just over $40,000
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is bigger, more powerful and more efficient than the CX-9 it’s replacing. And surprisingly, it won’t cost much more than that car, either. The CX-90 base model starts at $40,970, a little more than $900 greater than the base CX-9. For that, you get quite a bit. You get the new turbocharged 3.3-liter straight-six that makes 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque (or if…

Actually possible super dream car garage
2020 Yaris (1.5 Auto or Manual)
This car is my economy box. Small and fun. Has the connected feel but still a new car, all while being cheap. X-ice Snow tires in winter.
2015 Mazda 3 (2.5 manual, Headers, Tune, Body kit, spoiler, caliper covers) I love the way this looks, and the aftermarket is solid. Awesome body kits. It will never be particularly fast but can reach 0-60 in 6.9 with headers and tune. X-ice snow tires in winter.
If it’s FWD, it must be manual. AWD auto is acceptable.
2019 Mazda 3 Turbo (Spoiler, HKS Legal Dual Exhaust, Intake, CrossClimate 2)
Upscale experience, the best AWD system you can get for winter. With the intake, it will be slightly louder to show off the turbo, but still quiet enough. Add HKS legal turbo to turn up the sound a bit more but still pretty low. Cross Climates will suffice for winter because of the AWD.
2024 Mazda CX70 GT (Inline 6, fully loaded, Cross Climate 2)
Luxury experience with the new inline 6 engine.
Alternatives: CX-50 GT, CX-90 GT
2019 Mazda Miata (Manual, Xida coilovers with springs, 200TW RPF1)
Autocross competitor (C-Street). 300TW for street, 200TW dry tires, 200TW wet tires.
2013 Corolla
It’s a corolla and I’ll just keep running it as a cash cow.
What i would do with my cars:
Modify them how I want. Do whatever the fuck I want with them.
Price them completely automatically on the app because I’m rich enough it doesn’t even matter. Set lowest price to like 30 and let it do its thing.
No deliveries. Use Aubrey’s methods of getting them out to renters.

The cx90 is a brand new three-row SUV, and Mazda’s biggest and most luxurious offering to date is the eight trims, which are available starting at $ 37,845; a few of those eight trims can move eight people. Mitsubishi ASX 6-speed A/T CVT Review
"How much does this ASX cost?" a friend asked. I wasn't sure, so I guesstimated and said between R450 000 and R500 000
And then I checked the price and was astounded to see the Mitsubishi ASX model I'd been driving for a week costs R399 995. A number I was pleasantly surprised to see, because I thought it was more expensive.
What’s been updated?
The Japanese compact SUV on sale since 2011, has received a facelift for 2020. You'll notice a new radiator grille, and lower bumper section. To me, the car looks a lot more handsome than its predecessor; the new face definitely had passers-by taking a second glance at the Mitsubishi.
There are LED headlights, and daytime driving lights, and the rear also features a myriad of LEDs with the brake lights, taillights, reverse lights, and indicators all in a one-piece cluster.
Our test unit was decked out in one of the new hues: Sterling Silver
Inside, the ASX has a new grain of leather seats; an aspect perhaps lost on most as the cabin is dominated by the massive panoramic glass roof and a new 20cm touchscreen infotainment system with mobile phone mirror link.
It quickly has Apple CarPlay displayed in seconds after connecting my phone via the USB port. Other niceties include a voice control recognition feature, and keyless entry and ignition.
The interior offers all that one would need, with a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column and a multi-function leather steering wheel standard fare of course. The plastics used in the cabin are perhaps of slightly less quality in comparison to a Mazda CX-3 for example.
Nevertheless, it's a comfortable place to be with electrically-powered seats, mirrors and windows offering ease of convenience.
What's it like to drive?
The ASX is a city car, it's for carting around family and things in its 406-litre sized boot. Power comes from the same normally-aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine with variable valve timing producing 110kW and a rather paltry 197Nm.
The benefit of the engine not being turbocharged is that it is quite responsive. The gearbox in use is a CVT unit and it does a satisfactory job albeit with a slight drone now and then when I mashed the throttle.
It's a really comfortable car to move around the city in, offering good ride comfort thanks to its fully-independent suspension.
I found the seats very comfortable and a short drive to Gordon's Bay from the Cape Town CBD proved to be an effortless jaunt with hardly any wind noise creeping into the cabin despite driving at the legal speed limit.
I averaged around 10.5-litres/100km, not too bad for mostly city driving, and a drive to the GB.
In summary, the 4.3-metre long ASX proved to be a consummate compact crossover that's hard to fault, especially at a competitive price of R399 995. Included in the price is a five-year or 90 000km service plan.
