... hmm gon be honest everything thus far has fallen under my overall idea of concept, mood, and atmosphere i guessed this debut gon be but after yesterday teasers photos and todays mv teaser im kinda thrown off course..... this direction of smoke is nothing like i imagined but let’s roll

this was the tone i always had in mind but so much has shifted since this teaser... & it’s true it did open the scene, so maybe that’s why it felt that much more impactful..... like i can’t even compare the smoky-ness in this to any other teasers that dropped out later. like this is just peak immaculate vibes. it’s almost genial he even did it so i should be grateful so much for it.

the dusk orange... the recklessness of 70s rocky psychedelic smoked air.... JUST.. criminal !

the leather picks he wears here... the F7CKING BOOTS... the studs in the pants... the lighter... i need to raid this wardrobe so bad. not to say the car as well.... lmao he’s the coolest for this Cadillac pick like ive no words!!!!!!

2nd favourite. this was peak artistic aesthetic to show off everything that has made you this far and showcase it in a way you present what all these details mean to you... my idea is that this whole album lives in every fragment of every photo of this photset that came out that day. or it helps me realize/visualize what he values behind it

the tiny tiniest attention to the details almost killed me. love it when people/artists take the time to salute and give back on what has helped them / served to inspire them thru a process.

here especially... it feels like modern art since this place almost symbolizes blank canvas a 'rundown house' and the things are just thrown around yet they lead me into a final product that feels too contemporary yet it gives an ode to the past.

CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED SHINEE'S CONCERTS I HATE EVERYTHING. At least I watched the livestream 😭 and everyone was there, Jongin </333 Okay, love my 5th gen rookie Shinee <333 Hard is very "current bgs sound" it does sound like Nctee a little bit, but the vocals!!! Sounds like a banger tbh, it's not too weird so I can digest it quickly lmao. I like when Shinee is having fun, even though it may not be my fave TT from them, I feel like I may like it more than DCM. The MV was very NCT, perhaps not my fave, SM is a hit or miss with their music videos. Anyways, it's very 1st gen, got some Seo Taji and the Boys vibes. BUT THE BSIDEEEEEES!

It's frustrating because KQ can put so much thought and creativity into the lore, the MVs got so much better too, but the photos? And why do they only post one for each concept, Hybe drops 2737272 photos and they're usually really cool.

Shinee's concepts may be simple, but the Thom Browne ones are very aesthetically pleasing and the NCT-esque ones are fun too, because the pics are dynamic despite the boring background. Love all the boards you've prepared! I actually bought some more SM albums, particularly NCT's and Aespa's (I know, fuck SM, but I got a good deal) and the photos?! WOW. The issue is KQ is scared of taking risks, they can't commit fully, even the outfits for this comeback, we thought we'd be getting Yeehawteez, but it's so half-assed and we're back to fucking bikers and bodyguards, lol. Yes, Outlaw just like Movement is very cohesive, but I feel like that kind of cohesiveness is overrated and a bit too much. The songs blend in, I don't know where one ends and another one begins, and they're STACKED with noise and switch ups, so listening to the whole thing from the beginning to the end is a lot. ZFP1 is a cohesive album, it fits the late summer vibe, yet each song is very different. I'd say ZFP3 is similar. Sorry it took me a bit to respond, had a bit of a crazy day yesterday, but here I am! How's your week going?

You make a good point, that best and favorite can be different! For me, my biases are always gonna be some of my favorites - Taeyang I feel like has a unique voice that's really interesting to listen to, and Chan's singing voice is just super pretty to me, some of his lines on Maxident sound so amazing. 😭 I also like really Inseong's voice, it's very iconic to me, my high note fox boy. 🥺 There's also this soloist who used to be part of a group where I really like his voice, especially in a song he just put out (here's the song if you're curious). There's also definitely other voices I really enjoy, but I'm bad at pinpointing who's who vocal wise until I'm really into a group. 😂

That's fair, it did have a lot going on! I think my experience is also biased as a Chan stan because he had some really great outfits for that MV. That uniform sort of one was soooooo good. 👌Britt I am telling you this specifically because of you being a binsung stan. You should really watch the Circus MV, especially if you haven't really seen their outfits from it. The general concept is just, circus. But the looks!!! I get you on not really rewatching MVs, after a few times I usually just listen to the song.

‘Change’ MV analysis

I dunno what came to me to do this, but leggo. btw, most of it will be relating to Namjoon, although it may be arguable that Wale has experienced similar situations as Namjoon has as an artist/rapper and former student. Also, I tried to find gifs to make it more pleasing so here is a mix of bad screenshots and gifs to make this analysis more pleasing.

Sorry for any spelling/grammatical errors. This is my first analysis on an mv and I’m not really sure if I got everything across. If you want, you can add onto it. :3

Already, you notice that the beginning of the mv is in black and white and the music starts off with a sort of jazzy/blue tune being “played” by a vinyl record. This can mean two things.

The black and white can represent the kind of pessimism many of us feel about the world and the vinyl is us trying to reach back to the past (our own past when we didn’t have to worry or even were aware of these problems), so the music that starts it off is also a recollection to when we used to think the “times were good.” The black and white in this case can also represent our own past view of the world: we use to thing thinks are black and white- there’s always a good side and a bad side that was easy to differentiate.

At the same time, the black and white and vinyl can mean that the problems of society aren’t as new as many people assume. Several old movies and photos in the past are in black and white and vinyls are one of the many things people use as an aesthetic to represent the past, and so this can also represent how far society’s problems have become so embedded into our lives and how they’ve been forgotten like the past.

Even with the black and white aesthetics, there’s elements of light and darkness used in the warehouse. We see these film lights brightly shining down from the and even light coming from the windows as Namjoon raps; however, there are moments where Namjoon hides himself through shadows he creates with his arm or the shadows the building has. This can represent how authority will do whatever they can to hide truths that can destroy the system that kept them in power, even by using the lights (representing a way to reveal truth to many) itself to create shadows to hide. This is similar to how media outlets (hence, the film lights) is a double edged sword where the media has both the power to reveal the truth unbiased and the power hide it via propaganda or “distraction”. Despite all this, Namjoon cannot hide his face from the water on the ground, which reflects his face, and this can also represent how despite his attempts at hiding, the truth will eventually unveil no matter what.

The scene in the gif is also very interesting to look at, as he briefly steps onto a scene behind the one he’s in before. This brief transition can represent how Namjoon’s attempts at hiding from the lights is becoming known outside of the warehouse, and can symbolize the realization that what we used as a way to empower us and make us more aware of the world and truths is also being used against us, and we are becoming aware of this abuse. Yet, it’s brief, as the media outlets uses its power to hide information comes back into play and Namjoon steps back into the warehouse scene. However, that scene continues to play in the back, as if that brief reveal was not completely forgotten.

The scene in the back also represents the connection to real life and the problems addressed in the song. It’s its way of saying “this had and is currently happening.”This emphasis is even more pronounced as parts of the scene in the back would merge with the scene in front, to further show the connection.

Now let’s talk about the 6 people that appear in the MV alongside Wale and Namjoon.

The first is a cleaner, possibly working with (most likely) low pay. In America (and possibly in many other places of the world- I’m not entirely sure), one of the many issues often discussed is the idea of a higher minimum wage due to the inflation of living necessities and high job competition causing many, especially young and fresh-out-of-college, individuals to take on low paying jobs that have little to do with their career goals or what they studied for. Obviously she doesn’t want to do this, but has to in order to survive financially. This is seen on the inside of Namjoon, possibly reflecting on his personal past having to deal with the inevitable competition and possibly be ridiculed for being unable to get a “secure and respected” job, which is what the cleaner also probably is facing. (he even implies this problem with BTS in Bapsae).

Eventually, we see her still working as cleaning person but with a better uniform. She appears happier (not seen in this screenshot, but it’s in the mv) as if she now has a higher pay to take care of herself. Unlike the last scene, where she puts her mop down, she shows her mop and reveals the stains she was cleaning. This can represent the willingness to reveal the problems, no matter how dirty, that had plagued both her and society when it comes to workers.

The second is a tattoo artist. In Korea, tattoos are seen as taboo, so much that anything on the body that appears to be a tattoo on TV is censored. Even in other countries, many people would be intimidated by anyone who has tattoos and some individuals even have their own job applications denied because their employers simply denied them for having tattoos. Tattoos, like many works of art, are a way to express individuality; and yet rather than celebrating it, it is stigmatized instead. The tattoo artist is seen as stand-offish, as he is seen as a social outcast due to his choice to be unique and secretly tattooing himself, only to glare when he is noticed. This is also placed in Namjoon’s silhouette and can also reflect into Namjoon’s mind as he chose to be an idol, compared to the conventional 9-5 office job that guarantees decent pay, and how he too has experienced a similar situation for choosing to be different and having a different artistic style that doesn’t flow with the status quo; Namjoon has talked about his mother initially being against him writing lyrics and becoming an artist, and that B-Free diss where B-Free talked about how BTS weren’t actual rappers because they wear makeup and don’t fit the “appearance” of a rapper.

He later faces the camera, fully tattooed, as if he is willing to show his individuality. The red lights in the background can symbolize his passion growing and becoming prominent, or even his individuality becoming praised instead of ridiculed. While the first scene showed him working in black and white with a dim yellow coming from the lamp, he’s now seen in color and with a bright red emitting behind him.

The girl and boy represents the typical students, possibly of good standing and following the social norms and status quo in hopes that their future will be okay; and by future, their minds has been shaped to believe that following the 9-5 work day and having financial stability will give them happiness. However, for the first scene with the girl, despite being conditioned to follow the line, we first see her looking back at the tattoo artist. She’s tempted to be unique, but she doesn’t want to risk her possible “happiness” to be taken away because she failed to toe the line. On to of that, the obvious pressure to follow it is also taking a tow on her. She’s grim about her situation despite being motivated to have her “happy future.” This can also mean that she is realizing that financial stability and sticking to the status quo does not guarantee happiness. This can connect to many of us today, as we start to wonder if material items like wealth and riches guarantee actual happiness.

The problem is not exclusive to her, as she and shares the same thing with the male student. As an escape, the two of them wear VR head sets and the female student is seen watching TV. Virtual reality, of course, allows the user to see a different world and choose which kind of world to see, even allowing them to interact with it. The wires that hang around are seen strewn as if it’s feeding her and she is seen dosing off. More on the wires when we talk about the worker. This relates to how many of us, especially students, see media and technology as also an escape from the pressures and stress caused by social problems.

If you notice, as the video progresses, color is subtly being put into the video before color is fully put into the video. First with the light the tattoo artist has behind him, and now the student with a yellow pencil and a green bow. This is just right before the line “world is gonna change.” I’ll talk about color and that later.

The politician. Obviously, politicians stereotypically are known to be corrupt individuals who do whatever they can to be in power. In order to do so, regardless of their tactics, politicians have to gain the people’s trust. They do this by being well dressed, well groomed, well known, following the status quo, possibly even appearing to be a parental individual who seemingly care for the citizens and reach out to many. This politician appears to have it all and possibly appears to be a good candidate based on looks: he has a tailored suit on, a beard (like he’s a kind old grandpa warmly yet with with authority talking) and speaking to many microphones and cameras are flashing. Remember how I said the lights can represent truth and it being revealed through an outlet? That camera flash can represent both the popularity the politician is known for and a reveal that would also end his career.

Light is fully on the politician, showing possibly his corruption coming into light. He smokes a cigar as both a way to flaunt off the rewards he received from corruption but to also show the consequences of his actions. His career is dying, and so is his reputation now that it has come to light. Sure, he looks like he has power, with his suit, but, as you can see from his hand cuffs, he’s probably lost it all. He’s being controlled by someone; the someone who offered him the power he wanted in exchange for some control, but eventually took over themselves. The beard that he had is gone, revealing more of his face and possibly more of his secret actions. His suit is unbuttoned to show that he’s slowly coming apart and his image of a trusting leader is disappearing.

And finally, the worker. Just like the students, he was probably the one that stuck to the status quo, and unlike the cleaner, he was able to get that financial stability and so called “happiness.” However, like the students, he also starts to realize that what society calls happiness is not what he wants. Despite this, he distracts himself from the problem by continuing to stare at the screen and working.The shades of blue on his shirt and pens can represent his intelligence hidden by the monotonous lifestyle of the 9 to 5. Blue is also seen as a color commonly used for business, as it represents trust and dependability and many use blue as a psychological tactic in advertising and people looking for jobs would often use blue in the applications to stand out more. The worker, cleaner, tattoo artist, and students can really connect to Namjoon and possibly Wale’s struggles with society’s pressure in sticking to the status quo and fear of being ridiculed for failing to do so.

Later, we see the worker tied up in cords and cables (compared to the student simply lounging on the cables near the tvs). The job, despite offering security, is dead-end and he is too worked up in his job to realize or even escape from it. In a way, the cables that were with the student is a foreshadow of her future that would be the worker now. He doesn’t struggle, either because he realizes that it’s too late or he isn’t aware that he is trapped (most likely the latter because his hands continue to twitch as if the keyboard is in front of him). The jacket of his suit is taken off, representing the skills and intelligence he thought would be of good use to his job taken away by the lack of motivation and passion he experienced. Only his blue pants remained, which is whatever individuality he still has- but it’s not enough to make him be truly himself anymore.

Remember when I talked to you about color and how it was subtly put into the music video before Wale comes in? That can be interpreted into two different things.

Let’s start with the first thing:

In a way, Namjoon’s world is represented by the black and white scenes that first appear. The black and white can symbolize his own singular views of the world, not changed yet by other views of the world but slowly becoming part of his views until Wale comes in. Wale is seen in a bold color (green, then red, etc), compared to the more muted colors that appear in Namjoon’s scenes.

Colors, now, besides representing pessimism or the past, can also represent the viewpoints that both Namjoon and Wale have seen and eventually influence their own views.

Like Namjoon’s brief step into the scene playing behind him and the scenes still playing after that, Wale’s way of showing the connection is by projecting scenes behind him. The light that Wale stands on shows that he controls how he sees the world, as oppose to Namjoon being shined with light that is above him, and how he tries to reveal truth through the outlets himself. Unlike the lit warehouse we see before with Namjoon, there seems to be only three sources of light, two which shows reality and one where Wale stands on. This also emphasizes the control Wale have with how he wants the world to see him rather than have it manipulated by others, especially those who want to belittle or hide the truths he wants to reveal. Wale shows that he has nothing to hide, as he stands behind a white background that also represents light being shone on him. In fact, the other scenes of the 6 different characters in full color show them with one light source instead of multiple.

There are moments where Wale is more predominantly a swatch of color or when he is a variety instead, representing his own view point in comparison with others. That means that even if he has many influences and sees many views, it’s him who decides his own opinions and views, which is represented as a single color instead of many. Occasionally, you see that the video gets “tampered” with for a few moments (like the screenshot above) by glitching or adding other colors before switching back to what it was before, as if someone is trying to change his views, change other people’s perceptions of him or silence him, but he still sticks to what he believes in and stays true to himself while managing to share his opinions.

Namjoon joins in, as we see him now in full color and, like Wale in green, Namjoon is seen in red. Someone also tries to tamper with him by adding static, glitching the video, and trying to make both him and Wale fade, but they remain. Because Namjoon now has color, or more views of the world compared to his black and white view before, the people we see before are now in color. On top of that, what they become or the truth behind them are also revealed.

Wale and Namjoon at the end are seen together in the same warehouse again. This time, none of the film lights or the window lights are there. Light, however, is revolving around them and camera flashes are seen. However, they don’t hide from them because they know that regardless of that the media outlet does, they both are simply revealing the truth of themselves. The puddles of water on the floor remains to prove their point. Even when their clothes are black and white, like the video in the beginning, color is still around them, showing that their unique views and mindset remain and what the wear represents their past with pessimism and a limited viewpoint. Rather than hide it, they wear it as a sign of their growth.

Which brings the second thing:

As you noticed, the lyrics themselves are full of heavy topics like racism, hate, broken education systems, dreams that can no longer be achieved due to changes in time, questionable social norms, etc. Yet, despite it all, there’s one line that shines from the pessimism these topics bring.

“World is gonna change.”

There’s a reason why color begins to appear as the first time this line is heard. Despite the negativity that Namjoon raps about in the beginning, rather than saying “we’re fucked” he implies that there is hope. As black and white represents pessimism, color can represent optimism. As black and white represents a past that might never change, color represents a future that has changes for the better. However, we also have to remember that black and white are also colors, like how “black and white” views are just as valid as the “multiple colors” views of the world. While some parts show them being fully integrated with colors, there are still black and white elements used to balance or even use as a sort of secondary color for the brighter ones.

In the end, we see that the whole video is colored, yet Namjoon and Wale wear black and white, to show that the view of the world shouldn’t just only be optimistic or pessimistic. In fact, it should be balanced. When many works of art often give an “unbalanced” view of the world (mostly sending a message of pessimism about the world’s problems), ‘Change’ proves something not commonly spoken about. We often see people via mediums of art or communication talk about how the world is already destroyed to the point of no return and we shouldn’t spend out time and energy trying to find a solution that we believe does not exist. On the other side, there are those who idealistically talk about the world becoming better without any kind of solid plan or awareness of what the problem really is. That’s where we need the balance.

As pessimism shows us the problems, optimism motivates us to find the solution. Even in the lyrics themselves have hints of optimism sprinkled throughout the song besides the chorus, and the music video shows this through color. Even with the colored scenes of the 6 characters, we notice that the cleaner is now happy that she is paid well, possibly no longer ashamed of her situation, and the tattoo artist finally opens himself up to reveal his tattoos without hiding them. These shows the changes that were made in the world that was for the better; small changes that still have unsolved problems, but enough to make the world a bit better than before.

So in conclusion? aka tl;dr

‘Change’ and its music video discusses about the problems prevalent in society but also sends a message of optimism and a better future ahead, along with the need for both optimism and pessimism to help us create change. We can start by becoming more aware and open to many views of the world while also maintaining our own individuality and the truth. The colors and lights play a major role in proving this message as it can represent how different opinions can help shape ourselves, help us develop more as individuals, change our perceptions, and show how we need pessimism to reality check while we need optimism to set our goals and guide us to a better tomorrow.

Would the change take time and require a lot of work? Yes. Will there be failures before success comes? Many of them for sure. Will change happen? Absolutely.

So long as we keep this balance and remember our goal, we can change the world for the better. The turmoils we experience now does not have to continue tomorrow, but only if we are willing to work and continue working.

is it just me or does the styling for this comeback so far seem all over the place and just kind of.... thrown together :/ like they’re really forcing the dark mature silhouettes with like animal print, metallic hardware and bright colours in a way tht doesn’t feel cohesive at all. it’s like they said how can we be fun.... but edgy at the same time nd came up with the worst manifestation of that concept possible 🤕

there's nostalgia to this song? i have no idea where it comes from, maybe it's from an old kpop song or another skz track.... and there's a saxophone??? like HUH WHAT WOW?? jisung's tracks (even though i can't name others specifically lol) seem to have a dreamy quality to them, the lo-fi sound making them perfect for drives with ur windows down. like, i think this is a good song to show to a non-kpop or skz listener? it's solid! the music! the vocals!! it's actually a breakup song & even without really knowing what the lyrics are, there's a bittersweetness to the performance that gives u sentimentality? completely candid i am not a fan of this type of sound :| it's not my style, where there's less melody in favor of more noise (no shade but think nct127). but it's still a fun song!!! the nyooom is so silly to me; there's a playfulness to it that fits the album!! it's like a dialed back version of cheese, if that makes sense? it's literally for skaters. this is definitely the most experimental of the tracks & maybe it'll grow more on me? who knows lmao

"1 2 3 racha get spotlight" WOW this is just 3min 28sec of 3racha bragging & i lie down at their feet for that. Good For Them! before maxident dropped i've been obsessed with heyday & whatever "i'm stacking EXP just like a mountain" means. and the DRRRR POW noise. and that bed squeaking noise that has an actual term that i can never FUCKING REMEMBER... this is aftercare after 3racha & taste, which i agree to wholeheartedly. i'm literally crying listening to this song, which by no means is a song to cry to! it's so sweet!! i love vocalracha!! i love that they chose to showcase themselves in this upbeat, cute & wholesome confession song!!! don't get me wrong about the angsty ballads; they have a time & place but WE NEED A SONG OF PURE JOY & EXCITEMENT IN THIS ALBUM!!! AND THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!! frolicking through meadows sort of vibe at the end of a coming-of-age kdrama movie. i'm still crying.

i loved this song in japanese & that rings true for the korean version too!!! it throws me off hearing it in a language i'm more familiar with since i've had the original version on repeat lol i don't normally listen to kpop group's japanese releases but this was an exception! i love all the elements of the circus they build into the song, the animals, the fire, the fanfare, the lyric painting with the iconic carny tune... geez this song is so GOOD for WHAT

THE SONG IS A FUNKY JAZZY BOP™ AND A HALF its the kind of song you just literally BOUNCE in your seat and make you sway from side to side THAT CHORUS IS INSTANTLY CATCHY AND ADDICTING TO LISTEN TO i love the guitar and horns and that weird laser whistle sound????? so much throughout the song!!!!!!! theres a part that goes ‘i tried to be so polite’ that elkie and seungyeon sinGS UUUUUUUUUUGGGHH THATS SO SATISFYING TO MY EARS THERES SO MUCH SEUNGHEE I NEARLY CRIED SHE SINGS THE CHORUS TWO (2) TIMES HER TONE IS INCREDIBLE AND WHEN SORN SINGS IT AFTER AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA- (THE SECOND CHORUS WITH YUJIN IS FANTASTIC TOO) YEEUNS RAP OKAY LISTEN I LOVE HER RAP BREAKS IN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR SONGS AND THIS ONE DID NOT DISAPPOINT THAT INSTRUMENTAL BREAK PUNCHED ME AND THERES MORE YUJIN AND EUNBIN!!!!!!! THAT BRIDGE with eunbin and elkie was pretty interesting it stays upbeat and it passes really quickly i dunno why but it felt a little off??? i dunno why??? it just does to me??? i feel like it ends too soon??? just a smidge tho- and it barely makes it to three (3) minutes???? (no is about the same length) but im still BOPPING

sidenote: apparently seunghee mentioned (i dunno where tho) that this song is similar to pepe and that sure is true lmao

THE DANCE remember when i just mentioned how it makes you wanna bounce and sway WELL THATS BC theres a move in the chorus that does just THAT!!!!!! the moment i saw it i copied the move like I GOTTA IN FACT the choreography for the entire chorus is SO fitting like its just lots of hip and shoulder movement BUT it just feels so RIGHT- during yeeuns rap part theres a little bit of a move they did thats similar in their song ME and lowkey i thought that was cool!!

THERES SOMETHING ABOUT that hip move that murders like the way they swivel around first and their hand movement with it and then leading into the side to side just SO SATISFYING TO WATCH especially during the last part in that darker setting!!!!!!!

seunghee starts the dance............................... thanks........ the dancing during eunbin and elkies parts during the bridge was lowkey kinda funny but i found myself following and copying it like sticking my hands out like they did in the video BUT overall it goes with the vibe of the song VERY well!!!!

THE VISUALS the overall video premise reminds me red velvets russian roulette like they are REALLY trying to KILL EACH OTHER IN THIS MV (or at least injure each other) with the soap slipping pushing sorn off that chair dropping that thing on yeeuns head that vacuum literally THROWING DARTS and LIGHTING FIRES and THE MOST DANGEROUS OF ALL....................... stepping on legos.........

SUPER COLORFUL............................ BUT FINISH IT WITH BLACK AND DARKNESS i thought that was interesting LIKE i knew it was coming from the teaser images but i DONT HATE IT the song is called ‘devil’ after all going all dark and lowkey menacing at the end is welcomed here!!!!!! i feel like its supposed to lowkey represent their concepts from debut to now yknow???

I LOVE ALL THE BRIGHT COLORS THO especially the yellows and pinks BUT THEN paired with colors like that blue and green and salmon color or whatever like THAT is just P L E A S I N G™ to my eyes there was ALWAYS a bit of all these colors in nearly ever scene and theres just so mucH BALANCE its pretty refreshing™ if you ask me

i just read this conspiracy thread on twt where they said jongdae was the traitor n i rewatched lucky one, monster and lotto and!!!!!! why is jongdae the only one with a covered face in monster? why was he on a big screen in lucky one? i may be teaching to far but my skin is vibrating!! evil!jongdae rise !

LAUGHIGN y’know I was like so close to making my first original text post in eighty four years just to explain my New MAMA AU Theory and how jongdae is the Traitor, but if someone else on twitter has already got it covered then maybe I’ll just leave it alone.

you’re not wrong tho! there are deliberate visual decisions made in monster/lucky one/lotto/power that all gesture to jongdae being singled out as a traitor/snake/spy. but if the twt thread already showed you the significant screen shots, then I won’t repeat what they said. however, there are two major plot holes in the whole conception of mama au so far - 1. for why is jongdae the traitor and what use does that even serve?, and 2. does sm particularly care enough to continue a storyline with coherency?

the power mv was interesting because it resolved like eighteen hundred plot holes in exo’s videography with simple comic book-esque solutions (everything!! is a planet, lmao), but it’s accompanying comic book pages didn’t serve to tell the audience shit about what sm wants to do. they’re all aesthetics cobbled together in a haphazard storyline, and sm is relying on fandom to tell them what it all says instead of instilling it with meaning in the first place.

and if we, the audience, figure out that “jongdae is the traitor” because it is so fucking obvious that he is, there’s a large chance that sm will backtrack and say NOPE!!! it was all red herrings!!!! it was [spins wheel] ksoo all along. and then sm will ask the audience to resolve why it was ksoo, even tho they clearly made visual choices around jongdae.

TL;DR - LOGICALLY JONGDAE IS THE TRAITOR, BUT SM PROBABLY DOESN’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT LOGIC

DRAMARAMA: Who is Hyungwon? A theory

[Mark Lee’s voice] It’s a long ass ride

A very nice acc I follow on twitter talked about their theory that Hyungwon is a grim reaper in the storyline of Dramarama. At first, I agreed with them because of all the aesthetic and HW being talk as fuck like Lee Dong Wook’s character in Goblin. So let’s talk about tvN Goblin. Monsta X is probably the biggest fans of this drama since it was airing (btw, Lee Dong Wook is under the same company as them, they probably cried when crossed paths with in at Starship). Jooheon has been talking about dramas a few weeks ago, they did that hilarious skits in Monsta X Ray 2, the boys renacted the scenes from Goblin at: ISAC, Meet and Greet; Shownu did a CF as goblin himself, Kihyun sang Beautiful by Crush (from Goblin OST) at KCon Mexico (just hyping my boy rn lmao), etc. So yeah, big fans.

Back to HW’s role in Dramarama, I don’t think he’s a grim reaper. I think he IS a goblin, similar to Gong Yoo’s character in the tvN drama.

Hyungwon appears in the first Protocol Terminal Scene in a formal suit, which looks like a bit of vintage. His whole figure seems to be out of place and time. In Goblin, Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) leads an eternal life as a goblin due his desire for revenge, which very soon he realizes it’s more a curse than a blessing. He uses his endless time to help people (at least in the past as they show us) find their right path in life, giving advices about things that are about to go wrong in their lives so they can correct it. The goblin also has some skills: it rains when he’s sad,he can make flowers bloom, he can make gold, he can see the supernatural like ghosts, grim reapers, etc.

In these pictures, we can observe some things:

As I said, Hyungwon always seems out of place. Minhyuk and Changkyun and in casual modern clothes in the first picture above, those that people wear these days. In the second picture, Changkyun’s head is in Minhyuk’s shoulders in their second picture together released, and CK’s eyes are closed. His solo picture is faded, different from MH’s that is pretty focused on. Same thing happens to Wonho and Shownu’s picture together; WH’s side is almost completely fading away (the second one where they’re together). Also: Chankyung and Wonho are the only ones with their eyes closed in their photos with their partner. That could indicate that: a) their picture partner (or themselves) is dead and they’re struggling to deal with it (could be bc of guilt); b) they’re going to die and need help. Fields are commonly used in cinematography to represent passage to afterlife, ethereal dream-like scenarios. MH and CK’s story isn’t very clear, but when it comes to WH and SH’s, you can see them in a kendo gym (apparently. there’s wood swords beside them and they’re in almost full kendo uniform), then in Shownu’s solo picture he’s alone, still wearing the kendo uniform and probably still at the gym, with a sorrowful expression. They could be brothers, or just hoobae and sunbae (I don’t know the honorifics in kendo, sorry).

Kihyun and Jooheon are kind of a different story. They seem to be in the same boat, you could say. Behind their picture with Hyungwon, you can see a car with the front almost completely destroyed. It seems like they both were in the car when it crashed. Hyungwon in the middle, still in suit, looking at his watch. Again, at first glance one would say he’s definitely a grim reaper but wait, I’ll bring it back a bit later. Back to KH and JH, they’re not fading away, not even in their picture with HW (there’s a bit of some white fog around Kihyun but it’s small and idk if it’s just a filter effect?). In all of this, HW seems to be running out of time; he is seen holding a hourglass in one of the first teaser pictures, he’s looking at his watch in the picture below, looking impatient, and his solo picture actually comes paired with a picture of a hourglass. It could also be the case of the scene in the picture above HW, KH and JH. In Goblin, the female lead’s mother is run over by a car and she’s dying, but she prays for help so the goblin saves her. It could be a similar case with KH and JH, and maybe the others too.

In Jooheon and Kihyun’s second picture together (without Hyungwon), they’re on a road (probably the one where the accident took place), heading in opposite directions. It’s possible they have different opinions about something related to their possible death, or about what happened before the accident. They don’t seem to be in good terms. KH’s black and white picture could mean that he’s the one that died, or chose not to survive (I can’t see if his eyes are closed it’s too damn blurred) by not accepting help from the goblin but Jooheon made a different choice (his picture is colored, and he’s looking at something).

In the hourglass photo, in the right bottom you can see all the boys’ logos half highlighted (they’re probably near death) except Hyungwon’s. If he was indeed what I said, the fact that that indicate he isn’t alive it’s actually because he already died, coming back as a goblin. As matter of fact of him not being human, he doesn’t fit the pattern of life and death, that seems to be the theme of all these pictures.

@ hyungwonope, on twitter, also mentioned that you can see their individual logos highlighted on the right column. However, in the pictures which contain Hyungwon, his logo isn’t highlighted at all. You can notice that they don’t seem to acknowledge Hyungwon in the scenes. One of the beliefs in Korean mythology is that dokkaebis (goblins) also have the ability to become invisible to humans (by wearing a hat, but myths are always being modified), and actually there’s a lot of different types of dokkaebis. In Wikipedia and in other sites I’ve looked into this topic, there’s possible options: a) nat dokkaebi (they appear during daylight and usually interact with humans, even befriending them); b) chonggak dokkaebi (know to attract humans). But the question still stands: who is Hyungwon? What does he wants, what are his intentions? Does he wants to help them? What does they mean to him? Of course he could be like Kim Shin from tvN’s Goblin; however for all we know he could also be: a) Cham dokkaebi (a mischievous dokkaebi) B) gae dokkaebi (an evil dokkaebi). He may seem harmless in the teasers, but we all know this shit can be unpredictable.

To me, he seems to be looking for something that involve the six of them. Maybe one of the boys is the key to a issue he wants to resolve (like in the drama, Kim Shin needed a bride to pull out the sword of his chest so he could finally die); all of them seems to play an important role in his situation. In Goblin, Samshin (goddess of childbirth) says that goblins can be found anywhere, but nowhere; that could explain about the different scenarios he’s with all of them; he’s timeless. In the video released (the pic above is from it), you see the 6 boys in front of Hyungwon, who is looking at the ground as if he is ashamed of something, passing him by as if he isn’t even there. They deviate from him though, suggesting they know he’s there. This video is the only released piece of info about Dramarama that actually puts them together in the same environment, looking like they’re actually from that place they’re at; the pictures separated by duos have contexts completely different one from another.

He could be a grim reaper, of course. If you look, it fits. What I say that support myy theory is: a) grim reapers are known, in Korean culture, to wear all black and with a hat in their heads (the very first stories about them dates from the dynasties eras, so they were pictured using the Joseon era traditional hat; of course HW could appear with a hat in the MV or in other scenes though); b) it’s known by everyone in the fandom, as I said in the beginning, that they’re huge Goblin fans, and there’s this joke about Hyungwon being the Grim Reaper because he’s tall (as fuck) and wears black most of the time (he was wearing a goddamn black hat in Monsta X Ray 2 at the beach). I think it’d be a bit obvious that this is his role in this era, but it could be the right theory, who knows. As I also said up there, grim reapers are only invisible to human eyes when wearing a black hat (at least in the Goblin drama, which is what we’re discussing), and the boys do not seem to notice Hyungwon’s presence and Hyungwon is not wearing a hat. I don’t remember if goblins could become invisible to humans in tvN’s Goblin (it has been some time since it ended and my memory is shit, lemme live), but as he has a lot of powers, this could be one of them. Or it’s just part of the concept aesthetic.

To conclude it, here’s a scene of Goblin where Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) visits the graves of his dead friends, people who died while he had to continue to live. His expression is similar to Hyungwon’s in the picture above. In the Protocol Terminal video teaser, Hyungwon is seem using modern clothes (wtf is that jacket but HW would look better than me even if he was wearing a potato sack). I don’t think the clothes would fit a reaper, but that could also be a misleading scene. Koreans are the masters of misleading editing, if you watch kdramas and see the previews for the upcoming episodes you know what I’m talking about. It’d be an interesting concept to follow because they could explore different storylines inside one plot. Anyways, can’t wait for this comeback that is feeding my conspiracy theorist and art hoe ass so damn much. I miss Goblin btw
