the 'lost fight = bum" thing with powerscalers is SOOOO ANNOYING. Rn with Kashimo, and I saw similar w gojo when 236 dropped where dudebros saying shit like "he got low diff'd trash character" in the comments of stuff not even about powerscaling. Powerscalers act like it's illegal to enjoy a character after they lose a fight. The way they switch up on characters over exclusively loss/wins is such a painfully shallow and bland way to approach the story (and kind of ironic considering how strength is treated in the narrative...)💀
The thing that annoys me the most is that they refuse to think of anything happening in the story that leads to a character losing. Like even ignoring the elephant in the room of Kashimo because Gege practically gave us nothing when it comes to scaling his released form (I would have liked something, but I can also accept that him losing the way he did speaks more toward Sukuna's ability than it does Kashimo's), you have characters like Jogo that they'll call weak, when in reality he's incredibly powerful but had the misfortune of fighting the two strongest characters in the verse as his only showing. Does that mean he couldn't have mopped the floor with most of the characters in the series at the time? Absolutely not, but you'd never get that from the vacuum that most powerscalers seem to operate in.
As someone who enjoys deep diving into fights and the details of the power system, I find it incredibly boring and annoying to not consider any external factors when talking about a fight. There's so many seemingly little things that can lead to a character winning a fight that they shouldn't have from a purely ability-based perspective. Did they prep beforehand? How does their ability interact with their opponents? Are they getting help from another character or a tool? Are they being buffed or nerfed by anything prior to the fight? Are they injured? Were they caught by surprise? Etc, etc.
Take Toji, for example, who powerscalers love to hold up as a powerhouse probably more than he deserves. (Which isn't me saying he's weak, he isn't, but I feel like some people do overestimate him in terms of ability, despite how much the power ceiling has been raised since Shibuya.) Toji planned so much for his mission to kill Riko and his fight against Gojo. He used other sorcerers to wear Gojo out for three days straight before he felt comfortable to step in and still used cursed tools and curses on top of it. Does that mean he couldn't have done anything if Gojo was fresh at the time of their fight? No, but it certainly made it easier. Toji doesn't blow through Gojo as easy as he does without prep, but people will look at their fight without any additional info and use that as a definitive scale of where Toji is compared to everyone else in the verse.
I don't know, I have a lot (and I mean, a LOT) of issues with how a majority of the fandom talks about JJK that isn't just the issue of powerscaling, but at a point it becomes me beating my head against a wall with nothing to show for it but a headache. Like, if anyone wanted to read me rant for a couple thousand words, bring up the fandoms general perception of Sukuna being a bum despite the heaps of info that we have to the contrary. Even the most recent chapter highlighted how ridiculous he is in terms of strength and understanding of cursed energy and sheer ability, but people are still saying he only won because of Mahoraga.
At what point is it not worth it to argue with that? Cause there's always gonna be someone that's wrong and loud about it, but when that becomes the majority of fans about multiple aspects of the series, it starts to kill the enjoyment of the series for me. I don't like being in a state of seeing bullshit takes every time I try to engage with the fandom. It's tiring.
#the woes of jjk gaining a lot of popularity in the last two years i guess#my thing is: if you're gonna continuously blast your opinions out in the fandom spaces and expect people to agree with you#dont be consistently and provably wrong#maybe its because i write meta on top of sharing my general opinion#but its always so clear to me when ppl dont reread the manga at all before they shit talk a character or gege or the story as a whole#cause they'll say shit that just isn't true but people will latch on and repeat it so much#that it becomes generally accepted as true#that's mostly what i have a problem with lol#answers#meta answers#(sort of)#anon#jujutsu kaisen#jjk spoilers#(technically)

Hey
Just saw everything that happened around your recent post about Harry and Ron and I’m really sorry for everything that you had to go through, I hope you are alright. Please do not let unreasonable people bring down your spirit, you are an amazing soul and an amazing writer (thoroughly enjoyed Back to the Eclipse); you have no idea how much your metas have helped people like me.
I have always loved reading but as the rebellious teen that I was I refused to read anything that was very popular so I had never read the Harry Potter books or watched the movies and I was kinda oblivious to the situation of the fandom as well. However last year I decided to read the books and guess what I absolutely fell in love with Ginny and Harry both as individual characters and as a couple(perks of reading the series without any preconceived biases), both of them are my top two favourite characters in the series (though Ginny kinda takes the crown for me). After finishing the series I was really excited to see what interesting opinions and takes people have not just for Ginny and Harry but for other characters in the series as well. However due to my inexperience with fandoms in general, the stupid me decided to start with reddit and quora (I still don’t understand why I did that to myself) and OMFG, the amount Ginny and Harry hate literally drove me crazy.
Honestly from the beginning I didn’t have much expectation from HarryXanyone other than Ginny shippers and Hermione’s arse worshippers; but the romione shippers and Ron fans????
The way the Ron and Romione fans slander Ginny (and also Harry, but to a much lesser extent than Ginny) was truly disturbing for me to read which lead me into questioning my own judgement about Ginny’s character and Hinny and I started believing that maybe I’m completely wrong about everything I thought about Ginny and Harry, because I really love Ron and I like romione as well despite all its problems and I thought that those people on the interenet have read the books so many more times than I have so “inevitably” they have to be right (and all of this I have to say was a very wrong thing on my part, though in my defence I was really busy with my Uni so I didn’t really have the time to think through things).
Then one fine day I stumbled upon your tumblr and you wouldn’t believe my happiness to finally come across someone who shares my ideas and opinions about characters, writing and literature in general but is much better and fearless than I can ever be in expressing those opinions. Your metas have reinforced my love for Ginny and Harry as individual characters and a couple again and has inspired me to be absolutely shameless in expressing my love for them. In fact you have also kinda inspired me to start my own tumblr account and ramble about my favourite characters, books and literature which I might do in near future.
Sorry for the rant
Please continue to be the amazing person that you are and continue to inspire people.
Loads of love from India
Ok, first of all, you guys are so nice but I swear what happened is absolutely not a big deal.
People are absolutely free to disagree with what I say, even if I wish they did it when there's actually something two people can have different opinions on.
That said, I'm so happy you liked Back to the Eclipse and that my metas arrived to someone. It's really crazy the gaslighting this fandom does when it comes to hinny, isn't it?
Also, I am so happy to have inspired you to share your opinions!

Food Fantasy: An Analysis on what killed a Golden Goose (3/3)
Ladies and gentlemen, we've arrived at our final destination.
Again before we start, we have our obligatory disclaimers. I do not own the game or its characters, nor do I claim to know the true history and likely fate of this game. I am entitled to the thoughts and opinions written within this post. Feel free to agree or disagree with the points being made.
This post also remains untagged from the main foofan tag. Only my followers will see this.
We are in the third and final stretch, and the checkpoint is past the cut.
Community
So... here we are, fellow Master Attendants.
As consumers of this piece of entertainment media, we are free to enjoy it however we wish. Appreciating what is there, creating something new from what exists, playing the game by the meta or however you want to play it (within your means and at your own risk of course). There's no one true and absolute way to experience the game.
However, just as you can enjoy something, doesn't mean you can't also point out flaws or shortcomings of the media in question. As an active veteran player, I've already pointed out the many gameplay design flaws already. And I'd be pretty dumb to say that Food Fantasy's writing is perfect. Hell, it has a lot of holes from a worldbuilding consistency standpoint.
And what of things from the community side? Yes, there will be times you'd see content you consider cringe, or something in fanon you don't agree with. Or there happens to be fan theories and fangirling posts you don't like the take of because of X or Y.
And that's fine. If we all happen to play the same way, like the same thing, agree on the same thing and produce the same thing, well, this would be one helluva boring community, wouldn't it?
But what if someone decides the way you're playing the game is wrong and harasses you over it? What happens if someone decides that their interpretation of the game's flavor text and lore is more important than what anyone else thought about it? What happens if someone decides that they're absolutely right, and you and everyone else who disagrees deserves to be bullied out of the fandom?
As much as I want to say we aren't part of the problem why the game is deteriorating, we are unfortunately, part of the reason why the game is as such even if most of the blame is directed towards Funtoy and Elex themselves.
⦁ Whale Authority. Whales will always be part of a gacha game's ecosystem. Without them, the game won't be able to maintain its upkeep costs, moreso for one that services global regions instead of just one. But when a game decides to cater its decisions of what features should be prioritized and when it should be launched around only its most elite paying players' voices -even if that influence has since tapered off-, you know there is something wrong with the publisher's management team and priorities.
⦁ Interguild drama. While I did not personally follow any of this, this has certainly been the peak of in-game tension back in the day. Poaching good players from both competitive and smaller guilds, guild mergers that often ended up making the annexed guild/s the equivalent of UK colonized India or Australia, suck-ups chummying up to guild leaders to keep a spot in an active, high ranking guild (for bragging rights!) despite never contributing much to overall damage, and just general dislike of certain players' attitudes. Actions like this have disillusioned many players about their playing experience and the reason why many eventually just lost the motivation to log into FooFan.
⦁ Cheaters. You know very well about the Hacker-teme I've mentioned before, but that was in context of Elex being incompetent with dealing with them. Here, I would like to point out the players who are desperate to dominate the playing field for whatever reason to the point that they would resort to cheating the ranks with forceful modifications of the APK. Whether it is to rank high in catacombs weekly, get a top spot in daily disaster damage, or weasel their way into the competitive whale ranks of a major ranking event, these are the people who have no qualms messing with the code to give themselves an easier time with the game. And if they're caught? Some pretend that they've made a mistake, some quickly sell the account to escape the blame, some others just scamper away into the dark and hide in the lower ranks where they can't be found. Others simply don't care and keep cheating until Elex decides to finally ban them... if Elex ever decides their rebates score isn't worth saving the account.
⦁ Ship wars. Ah yes, a staple of drama in any fandom. There doesn't need much explanation to this as we've all had our fair share of running into a battleground in whatever fandom we visit. Someone ships BB52 wholeheartedly? Nope, problematic 'age gaps'. Someone likes Napoleon with Pastel? Someone's bound to misinterpret their bios in order to justify that Napoleon was being abusive. Spaghetti and Borscht? Borscht is minor coded, ship her with Vodka instead. Whiskey and Pizza or Cassata? Cancelled! And I've never heard of the Foe Yay trope or pretend I don't know about it! Rarepairs? Disgusting! No fanon in my canon playground! Turkey and Eggnog? Gasp! How dare you, you pedo-shipper-even-though-you-never-said-you-shipped-them-romantically-but-that-isn't-my-point!
⦁ Character Obsession: Bias. On one hand, you love a character so much. Relate to a character so much. You have thus pulled this character into the folds of your bosom and coo at them like a mother dove and get so minutely triggered if someone so much as makes one disagreeable or joking comment about the character that you fly into an overreactive ballistic rage that would make a Canadian goose honk in fear. You don't care what they are in canon. You don't care about the possibility of mistranslation. What matters is the fanon space you carved out for them to exist in and that's all that matters. The problem with this is when this obsession takes over common sense and social etiquette and it steps into harassment territory. You begin to think: I'm the only one who 'understands' the character. I'm the only one who wishes better for the character, everyone else is out to defame them! Oh wait, you like them too? Do you like them the way *I* like them? No? Maybe if you're my 'friend', I'd let it slide. But to everyone else? No one else has the right to like them as much as I do. No one! Never mind that they're completely fictional- No one hurts my bias because in turn, they're hurting *me*!
⦁ Character Obsession: Anti. On the other hand, you hate a character so much. This character just makes you see so much red. Their smug little smirk just makes your blood boil. Their fictional backstory makes you recoil in disgust. You hate that someone else loves a character you hate so much. You cannot *believe* that someone could be so daringly stupid to like a problematic character. They must be problematic too then. They must be hiding real life secrets that are problematic! Yes, yes. That's right. That person's a supporter of abuse. That person's into pedophilia. That person is into military lolita fashion that Japan started the trend of but clearly Japan was part of the Axis Powers! And that... that person... that person... is a roleplayer and a yaoi fangirl properly interacting with minors and adults. How dare they...!
⦁ Fan Translations. Normally it wouldn't be a problem that a group or two or several are translating pieces of the game's lore ahead of the official. But with Elex's very delayed translations and extreme allergic reactions to translating Food Soul bios, people have become dependent on fan-translation groups to get their fix. The problem herein lies... is when the translators get drunk off the power that they are one of a handful in a small community who can magically transcribe the oriental moonrunes into English. The problem starts when the translator starts to have an inclination. The problem starts when the translator loses their professional detachment and start adding in details here and there into the fan translated product that ultimately changes the meaning and direction of the entire story. The problem is also escalated when that translator's embellished product is touted as the truth by their followers. If there was an upcoming character whose backstory is connected to a character they hated (either because of someone or they just don't like the character) and you were hoping to read the fan translation? How would you know that what you get isn't something doctored to the point it's basically fanfiction?
⦁ Social Justice Vigilantism. Sometimes someone does not have a character obsession or need it to be annoying. Sometimes, someone just wants to ring the alarm over something they find 'problematic' in order to police and sanitize the enjoyment of the media for 'everyone'. They no longer really take enjoyment out of a new Food Soul design being leaked, they no longer read the lore just to enjoy what it has to offer. Instead, they nitpick bits and pieces of the design and point it out repeatedly as a reason why the whole thing is bad. They point out bits of the story and inject their interpretations of it without really comprehending what they've read in full and react badly to it. What's worse is that they have no qualms publicly posting their reactions and eagerly and hungrily await those likes and echoes of agreement that they were right.
⦁ Circles of Influence. Everyone has a group they eventually gravitate to in a fandom. It comes with its own pros and cons. Sometimes you join a group because someone you admire is in there, sometimes you join a group because you just want to mingle and see more content. All valid reasons. Arguments can't be avoided in a group, it has to happen... But you have to take care. You have to take care to feel the change in the air of the group. When someone starts pushing people to agree with them. When your most admired people start to feel overly sensitive about certain characters or issues. When you start to feel obligated to spy on other groups outside of this one for 'nonbelievers', 'traitors' and 'heretics' who do not think the way this group does, and that bringing back bits and pieces of gossip as offerings would somehow make you more favored in the eyes of the inner clique or remain inside it. There is a gripping sense of annoyance when that person comes in to complain but you can't do anything about it but nod and agree. There is a pervading sense of fear and apprehension of overstepping an invisible boundary. There is fear that you might be next on the chopping block, after witnessing one of the others being ganged up on and thrown out without a second thought, their name spat upon like they're worth less than dirt. And so reluctant you are to give up what you have with them that when they push you to do something you are reluctant to do, all in the name of 'harmony and justice'... You do it. Even though it would mean offering yourself up to the mob with no salvation, and the stark realization that... [they] never cared about you as a friend.
And we've come to the end of this analysis trilogy. The writing got a little bit strange in this post, but honestly this is the best way I could put it. I'm aware things can and will be more complicated than the bullet points I've written but I'm just one person and I tried very hard to keep details of all the drama that happened in this fandom as vague as possible. Of course, that wouldn't work if you know what I am talking about.
The community is quiet now for the most part, the game is somewhere between limbo and the living plane. Things could be better for us, but I don't really count on it.
I wish I could leave a bit of a moral warning or something. But rather than do that, I just hope this was an entertaining read into one individual's eyes into Food Fantasy and everything that makes it up.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#230-221)
#230: Dschinghis Khan -- Dschinghis Khan (Germany 1979)
"Die Hufe ihrer Pferde, die peitschten im Sand Sie trugen Angst und Schrecken in jedes Land Und weder Blitz noch Donner hielt sie auf"
"The hoofs of their horses, they lashed in the sand They carried fear and horror in every country And neither flash nor thunder stopped them"
One of my favorite songs to jam to is Boney M's "Rasputin". A disco-influenced song about the life of "Russia's greatest love machine", it's energetic while telling that of a myth. I mention this because Dschinghis Khan is compared to this often, in all the ways.
Only this time, it's about the great conqueror Chinghis Khan, who took over the whole universe (and lasted for a very long time). From how he struck fear across the steppe to fathering seven children in one night, he is seen as the embodiment of masculinity.
While entertaining, sometimes I'm put off by the gimmickry. It can be argued that it wouldn't age that well today, because it can be seen as culturally appropriative or mocking Mongolian culture. But for what it's worth, it's enjoyable and still a classic today.
Personal and actual ranking: 4th/19 in Jerusalem
#229: Louisa Baïleche -- Monts et Merveilles (France 2003)
“Oh, mon amour Où es-tu, mon amour?” “Oh, my love Where are you, my love?”
A definite case of love at first listen for me—Monts et Merveilles is a calming ballad, albeit with sad lyrics about the end of a relationship. The instrumentation is quite nice; it reminds me of songs that stood out on the charts during that time. It also had the "ethnic style" percussion in the bridge, which made me think that France Televisions wanted to mix what worked in the last two years (ballads) with the ethnic sounds from the 1990s (as Louisa is half Kablye, an Algerian ethnic group)
Despite it, it got a pretty low result—though it may be because 2003 was a stronger year songwise compared to the two years that came before it. Or it maybe because of the hair getting into her face that took away from the experience...
Personal ranking: 5th/26 Actual ranking: 18th/26 in Riga
#228: Hakol Over Habibi -- Halayla (Israel 1981)
"הלילה, הלילה, יהיה זה הלילה נאמר דברים שלא אמרנו מעולם"
"Tonight, tonight, it will be the night We’ll say things we’ve never said before"
On a random note, whenever I would search up Idan Raichel's "Hakol Over", Hakol Over Habibi would be one of the first search items that pop up. I would completely ignore it until now, when they actually participated in Eurovision!
That said, Halayla is very groovy song which plays with the disco vibe of the 1970s and the highly energetic choreography that would define 1980s Israeli Eurovision entries. The instrumentation is quite awesome, with the mix of piano, strings, and I think accordion setting up the vibe. (And it switches well from minor to major and back again , which can go awry when done wrong).
The members seem to have a ball on stage, and Kikki looks beautiful in her dress, which was fitted that way because she was pregnant at the time!
Personal ranking: 5th/20 (though it jumps around often...) Actual ranking: 7th/20 in Dublin
"Sometimes you feel sad and you don’t know why Thousands of little reasons are making you dumb You nearly forgot what it’s like to be a human being But you are not alone"
Wind has the interesting distinction of participating three times and coming in second twice out of those three. The first one, "Fur Alle" was seen as such as a big contender that there were bets made against it winning. And then it didn't.
Laß die Sonne in dein Herz didn't come that close to winning in 1987, but I can argue it's the better song of the the three.
It catches you right away with the reggae influences, which creates a relaxed vibe throughout the song. It builds up well with every key change--it does get repetitive at times (especially with the choruses), but never boring. And while it shares a similar theme to Fur Alle, it doesn't come off as either derivative or charitys-single like.
(That said, I did grow to like Fur Alle eventually, but this one was more instantaneous.)
Personal ranking: 7th/22 Actual ranking: 2nd/22 in Brussels
#226: Charlotte Perrelli -- Hero (Sweden 2008)
“This is a story of love and compassion Only heroes can tell.”
The better Charlotte song, in my opinion. The song she won with, “Take Me to Your Heaven” is a complete vintage track, almost influenced by ABBA-nostalgia going on at the time. “Hero” , while still on the same schlager vein, modernizes the production a little bit, to the point I imagine it would be a good pop song of that era.
Alongside that, Hero has some compelling lyrics, one which could summarize the hero's journey in general. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody were to write a Eurovision jukebox musical, they would use this in some format.
That may be the case on why l like it better, but it could also be because it should’ve done better in the contest. The fact the jury wildcard saved Charlotte is a reason why they're around, but the fact there was a wildcard which kicked out the actual tenth placer (North Macedonia's Let Me Love You) could be totally flawed too.
Personal ranking: 6th/43 Actual ranking: =18th/25 (with France) in Belgrade
#225: Carlos Paião -- Playback (Portugal 1981)
“Podes não saber cantar nem sequer assobiar, Com certeza que não vais desafinar, Em play-back, em play-back, em play-back,”
“Maybe you don't know how to sing or even how to whistle But you won't sing out of tune for sure, In playback, in playback, in playback”
This is so modern and infectious it’s unbelievable. From the introduction to Carlos’ biting lyrics to the choreography, it makes one wonder why it got neglected in the voting. 1981 was a strong year, sure, but this song is definitely one of the best of that field.
Playback, as the title suggests, is about the pervasiveness of lip-synching in the music industry. One day, nobody will have to learn how to sing because the playback will save them. They can all focus on the performance without taking note of the song.
It's eerily relevant to Eurovision today, considering we don't use live music anymore and backing vocals can be mimed. I have mixed feelings about the latter, because one side argues it allows different genres of music to appear, but the other argues it reduces artistic credibility. I prefer having live vocals; if a delegation wants to use them on the track (e.g. looping), it should be on a case-by-case basis.
Maybe that's why it somehow made the ESC250 the last two years...
Personal ranking: 4th/20 Actual ranking: =18th/20 (with Turkey) in Dublin
#224: Emma -- La mia città (Italy 2014)
“E dimmi se c’è davvero una meta O dovrò correre per la felicità”
“And tell me if there really is a destination Or I have to run for happiness”
The black sheep of Italy’s post-comeback output, and coincidentally the only song completely chosen internally. That being said, La mia citta is still a good song, and for me it’s better than some of the fan-favorites out there.
Admittedly, I prefer the punchy verses to the chorus, with the latter reminding me of something out of P!nk's discography, but I revel on Emma’s energy and her letter to the city of Rome. We have struggles about the place we are from, but still try to sing its praises when we can!
The staging was a bit tacky at times, but I did like the aesthetics of it—particularly her laurel wreath. Her costume had a good concept also, but is also overdone it in terms of the bejeweled top.
(As for the Sanremo winner that year, Contravento, it feels like a bit of a grower. The clarinet intro really takes one in, but there has to be a whimsical, sweet staging to accompany the hopeful song. Had they done so, a left-side finish would've waited for them)
Personal ranking: 6th/37 Actual ranking: 21st/26 in Copenhagen
#223: Brigitta -- Open Your Heart (Iceland 2003)
“Everything you share with me Turns a little darkness into light And that is how we’re meant to be Truth will keep the light shining brighter”
Also known as, the woman who originally came from Husavik! The difference is that Birgitta was the lead singer of the group Irafar. Open Your Heart reminds me of songs that end up on DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) soundtracks—it can actually work in the end, but also in the beginning to introduce the characters and/or their circumstances. The random running order really helped it with being first, haha! Beyond that, it's an optimistic song, helped with the guitar influences which ground it in the era. Plus, the production and lyrics add to this feel, encouraging even the shiest to open up their feelings. Also, I like the flowery aesthetic that Birgitta has, from one in her hair to the larger one (which I think is real?) on her microphone. Personal ranking: 4th/26 Actual ranking: 8th/26 in Riga
#222: Tomas Ledlin -- Just nu! (Sweden 1980)
“Han vill dra iväg, kanske ner till Paris Och hitta äventyret på något vis Inte sitta här på stans konditori Och låta tankarna, bara fladdra förbi” “He wants to go away, perhaps down to Paris And find adventure somehow And not just sitting here at the local café Just letting the thoughts flutter by” The 1980s saw the genre New Wave come to vogue, and Just Nu was a valiant attempt on the genre, especially considering the direction Eurovision would go later. From the opening notes, I got the punkish notes from the instrumentation, and the lyrics definitely add to the feeling of being free from societal expectations, crying out "right now"! (which is funny, because I learned Romanian at one point and nu means no in the language. So I keep thinking it's "just no!" against conformity) Tomas also shows quite the attitude on stage--he just struts into the stage with a boyish charm and kickstarts the song. With his looks and usage of the microphone stand, he portrays this rebellious character well, though the orchestration could’ve been improved with the strings and flute. Personal ranking: 2nd/19 Actual ranking: 10th/19 in Den Haag
#221: Lea Sirk -- Hvala, ne! (Slovenia 2018)
“Moje ime je Lea in/Za vas imam nov lik!” “My name is Lea/ And I have a new character for you!”
I love the opening lines for this song—it immediately sets the tone and has a strong statement alongside it. She's Lea, and she won't let anything down on She asserts that she can’t be sold out, and has a great attitude to accompany the trap beat, which reminds me of a K-pop song for some reason. The staging fits the song to a T--though it didn't need any changes from the NF, haha. As for the fake break, I don't have any strong opinions on it, but it definitely kept up interest for the song. A nicer touch was the Portuguese line in the end. Either way, it was a surprise qualifier in its semi that year, and it was one surprise that I greatly welcomed. Hvala da!
Personal ranking: 8th/43 Actual ranking: 22nd/26 GF in Lisbon

Dance Theory and Practice (Lecture)
This is something based on a presentation I gave to MA students at the London School for Contemporary Dance about research in November 2017. I used it as a chance to think about the relationships between practice and theory. I wonder if it might seem a bit condescending but this is really how I talk to myself and this was a way for me to try and get things a bit clearer in my own head.
First off I wanted to get my head around what research is. It’s something about finding stuff out. Like Googling maybe? Or what journalists do for example? These are forms of research but I’m specifically talking about research in the context of academia. Maybe this is what academia is: ways of finding stuff out that has some consistency and rigour; or agreed ways of finding out stuff. And it’s something about creating new knowledge - so more than just finding any stuff out.
To get doctorate for example you need to make new knowledge (like say something or discover something that hasn’t been articulated or found previously). Up to that point in academia all the way from school, research is generally about summarising existing knowledge.
Julian Klein in an article ‘What is Artistic research’ writes about how research needs to strike a balance between tradition and innovation; between connecting with other people’s research, and developing new material. “Tradition without research would be blind takeover, and innovation without research would be pure intuition.”
There are different types of research for example scientific, historical, artistic, economic and business. To illustrate some of these different types I’m going to use some made up research questions relating to dance and repetition, which is a common enough subject in dance. In doing so I’ll be showing about how academic research forms part of dance.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH involves coming up with a hypothesis and then gathering data: is the hypothesis disproved or supported (it’s never proved) by the data? The method has to be repeatable. A scientific research question might be something like this (I’m pulling these questions off the top of my head):
TrinityLaban seem to do a lot of scientific research about dance for example. Their dance science department looks at optimising elite performance and researching impact on other people who dance. Dance for Parkinsons is another quite well known area of research at the moment. Or think of Matthias Sperling working with psychology researchers to use dance as a means to study how moving together is linked to liking each other.
This brings us to the distinction between BASIC (sometimes called pure) research and APPLIED research.
Basic research might involve something like developing scientific theories and might be thought of as being driven by curiosity.
Applied research however has a specific political or business drive to address specific problems, for example researching a new product that a company wants to sell.
In reality these two things are not distinct and there might be different motives and interests running through any research activity. And these might shift over time.
Andrew Simonet is a choreographer that wrote a book called Making Your Life As an Artist.
In it he writes (this is long quote but a good one):
“I think of artists like scientists. Just like scientists, we begin with a question, something we don’t know.
We go into our studio and research that question.
Like scientists, at the end of our research, we share the results with the public and with our peers.
Some research is “basic,” useful primarily to other researchers. Some is “applied,” relevant to everyday life.
Both are essential. And most artists do some of both, creating experimental work that pushes the form as well as work that is more broadly relevant.
Just as in science, a negative result is as important as a positive result.
Finding that a certain drug does not cure cancer is a crucial discovery. And an artistic experiment that fails produces important information.
When you are working beyond what is known, when you are questioning assumptions that haven’t been questioned, you generate a lot of useful failure.
Failure in science and art is a sign that the process is working.
Though certain scientists win the Nobel Prize and get famous, all scientists know they are standing on the shoulders of thousands of researchers all over the world who have been asking questions.
And while some artists will get the fancy awards (and maybe even get on TV), we know they are standing on the shoulders of thousands of artists who have been doing artistic research for decades.
In art, as in science, there is an element of faith. Scientists don’t enter the lab saying,
“I will cure cancer.” They say, “If I join the thousands of researchers asking rigorous questions about cancer, discoveries and breakthroughs will be made.” In science and in art, you cannot say in advance that this experiment will lead to this result.
But we artists know that if we join the thousands of artists asking rigorous questions, the world will change.
It always has.
The scientific method and the artistic process are the two most robust problem- solving methodologies ever developed. Take either one away, and our world would be unrecognizable.
Look around you: every object, every surface, every technology was created, re ned, and designed using the scientific method and the artistic process.”
OK, now let’s look at some other areas of research, moving to HISTORICAL. This could be looking at original sources, conducting interviews etc. to understand history of something, for example:
HUMANITIES is another field of research. Humanities research is less about right or objective answers and more about looking at the issues around more ‘factual’ events.
We need to remember that science and historical are not ways of finding out absolute truths. They are subject to cultural, personal and structural biases of those who construct this knowledge. Often dominated by white European men. Not to say these are just opinions but nor are they absolute truths.
Lot of the popular research relating to contemporary dance is in the humanities.
FEMINIST EPISTEMOLOGY and DECOLONISATION are two examples of sort of meta-research projects that examine and seek to undo these biases.
Another key term in humanities research is HERMENUTICS which is the theory and methodology of interpretation, especially the interpretation of biblical texts, wisdom literature, and philosophical texts. Modern hermeneutics includes both verbal and non-verbal communication as well as semiotics.
Okay let’s move onto PRACTICE BASED research. In this sort of research, creative works are considered both the research and the object of research itself. Practice based research can be non-artistic too.
A practice based research relating to dance and repetition might look like this and involve making and reflecting on different works that use repetition:
Okay, so what is the relationship between PRACTICE and THEORY?
Henk Borgdorff in The conflict of the faculties : perspectives on artistic research and academia describes four perspectives for thinking about this relationship.
1) THE INSTRUMENTAL PERSPECTIVE (music mostly - no pun intended “suggests that ‘theory’ serves the creative process or performance practice in the arts. This viewpoint, predominant in professional arts schools, understands theory first of all as a body of technical professional knowledge. Each art discipline thus has its own ‘theory’ – instrumental knowledge specific to the craft, needed to practise the art form in question.
Examples are the theory of editing in film, the theory of harmony and counterpoint in music (...)
This might, for instance, involve research into a specific use of materials in visual arts, dramaturgic research into a theatrical text, or even the current fad of applying information technology in artistic practice.”
2) THE INTERPRETIVE PERSPECTIVE “holds that theory provides reflection, knowledge, and understanding with respect to artistic practices and products. Historically, this view is associated with academic disciplines like theatre studies and musicology, which try to facilitate understanding of artistic practice from a certain ‘retrospective’ theoretical distance.”
Here some examples of theory that are currently popular for interpreting dance:
It’s worth remembering that practice can be acknowledged/ made visible in theoretical reflection through CITATION; events, performances, workshops and other things can be referenced in written academic texts just like articles and book.
3) THE PERFORMATIVE PERSPECTIVE holds that: “theory itself is a practice, and that theoretical approaches always partially shape the practices they focus on. Whether we are dealing with the theory of linear perspective, classical rhetoric, the twelve-tone technique, set theory in serial music, or insights into the cultural meanings and societal functions of art, the performative power of theory not only alters the way we look at art and the world, but it also makes these into what they are.
That art practitioners can be sceptical about theory – even to the point of developing a misplaced aversion to it – is perhaps not just because some theories seem far afield from the actual practice of art, but also because the performative power of theory competes with the performative power of art. On the other hand, thinkers about art who take unnecessarily reticent or aloof attitudes towards artistic practice (especially that of the present day), and who develop their own codes to institutionally protect their ‘profession’ from artistic practice, may be exhibiting a similar perception.”
4) THE IMMANENT PERSPECTIVE holds that: “All practices embody concepts, theories, and understandings. Artistic practices do so in a literal sense, too – no practices and no materials exist in the arts which are not saturated with experiences, histories, or beliefs.
“Creative processes, artistic practices, and artworks all incorporate knowledge which simultaneously shapes and expands the horizons of the existing world – not discursively, but in auditory, visual, and tactile ways, aesthetically, expressively, and emotively. This ‘art knowledge’ is the subject, as well as partly an outcome, of artistic research as defined here.
Another way to think about this is to think that the human mind - and all its abstract structures and concepts - is rooted in the human body. This is the underlying hypothesis of the field of embodied cognition.
Philosophy occurs within and through particular physical activities even if that activity is sitting still. Different physical practices enable different modes of thinking.”
I then proposed some readings to thinking about these things further before a seminar on the subject (that I did not run). I will post these next.

CtM Thursday Thoughts
Why I Don’t Want CtM to Last Forever
This week, I thought I’d take a break from the usual photoset posts to share a few thoughts about a topic that may or may not be controversial. I’ve mentioned it before in a joking way, but really, I’m serious. I love CtM, but I don’t want it to run beyond series 9 or 10 (we know 9 is guaranteed at this point). So this week, I thought I would do my best to explain why. More thoughts follow:
CtM is, as far as I’m concerned, the best show on TV, and it’s also unqiue. There’s nothing else like it, and it’s hard to imitate even though that has been attempted. It’s also done a great job of maintaining quality over a relatively long run and with a reasonable degree of cast turnover. In fact, the original “main character” is long gone, and the show is still going strong. I know some fans have already posted thoughts about the show being past its prime, and while that’s a valid opinion, I don’t personally agree. Although the tone of the show and structure has changed over the years, I think it’s still top-notch quality TV, even though I understand that some fans would prefer the earlier format. Still, even though I think the show is still great, no TV show can last forever. There will, at some point, be a time when the show will end, and I hope it’s not long after series 9. 10 might be a nice round number to close the show out, but I really hope that’s as far as it goes. There are several reasons for this–
Cast and Crew–So far, there are still a fair amount of original cast members left, and fortunately for me, these include my three favorite characters on the show (including the two who have never missed an episode). Still, cast members have come and gone over the years, and I think that the longer the show runs, the more likely it is that more cast members will leave. I have liked the newer characters, too, but too much turnover can be jarring to the point where it doesn’t seem like the same show anymore. Also, even more so than the cast, if Heidi ever decides to stop writing it, the show needs to end. If they try to keep going with a new showrunner, I don’t know if I could keep watching, because Heidi is basically the “soul” of this show. The whole tone and direction of the show comes from her. She has indicated that she still loves writing CtM, but some day I imagine she will want to move on. Whenever that day arrives, I think it will be time to end the show.
Changing Times–With CtM being a period drama, the times inevitably change, and the story reflects those changes. From what we know of the “real” story, the nuns left Poplar in the 1970s, and the trend toward hospital births only increased. It seems to me that it would be difficult (but not impossible) to continue the story too much past the mid-to-late 1960s without radically changing the tone of the show. It would be interesting to see how medical and midwifery care developed into the 1970s, but maybe a spin-off could cover that subject more adequately.
“Quality Creep”--I don’t know what else to call this, but generally, I’ve noticed that it’s difficult for a show to maintain its high quality if it runs too long. Its overall quality tends to decline the longer a show runs. I don’t want this to happen to CtM. Not that it’s impossible to maintain quality, and I do think Heidi is the best writer on TV and the producers and cast are wonderful, but I wouldn’t want to see CtM grow stale over time. This isn’t a guarantee, but it’s happened to too many other shows, and also I think putting a definite ending on a show while it’s still at the top of its game is better than dragging it out indefinitely.
Fandom–For me, the possibilities of “future fics” and fandom works beyond the canon run of the show is intriguing. As someone who generally prefers canon-based stories to AUs (but I do read–and love–a lot of AUs as well, even if I don’t write them), I think “closing the canon” so to speak opens up the possibility for more fandom creativity in the way of fics, and also in terms of meta and story analysis “after the fact”.
DVD Extras/Deleted Scenes, etc.–I and many other fans have mentioned our desire to see “Special Edition” DVD sets that feature cast/writer commentary, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. I think it’s more likely they would release a set like this after the show is done with its run.
I think that, overall, although I love the show and a part of me would like to see it go on forever, I think ideally it should end after series 9 or 10. As many other shows whose fandoms have continued after their runs ended proves, I think the show has a long fandom life even beyond its official run.
That all said, I plan to watch it as long as it’s around, as long as Heidi is still writing it.
So, any thoughts?

Hey tumblr people, friends, SPN family,
You may have realised that my blog has become the virtual version of tumbleweed rolling through a desert in recent weeks/months. I noticed on checking my blog recently that I have had an influx of new followers which I think is predominantly thanks to a shout out from Shirley (@destieldrabblesdaily) which I am infinitely grateful for because I consider her one of the best blogs in the SPN fandom. It is for that reason among others that I feel pretty damn bad about not being around recently to share in your speculation, meta and general love for the show.
I haven’t said much since the finale, or even about the finale. I never wrote an episode review for any of the last 3 episodes of season 12. (still haven’t seen 12x21 and don’t plan to) I guess I just want to explain why.
In the past few months SPN has been losing its grip on me, I guess I always thought this would happen one day as it always has in the past with other things that I have falling in love and obsession with until I just well… get over it. Usually its when a show finishes or movie franchise ends though, rather than whilst it’s still going on. I haven’t felt that itchy desire to constantly check my dash, or write meta or obsess over speculation for the show lately at all. I tried re-watching season 12 and I just couldn’t maintain my concentration. I instead started watching other shows – American Gods is fantastic – and getting out a bit more as well. Tumblr kinda sucked me into this pit where my social life pretty much dried up and became non-existent. Though in all fairness, tumblr also got me through a pretty nasty stint of depression.
I keep hoping that this will be temporary, that perhaps when season 13 comes to our screens that I’ll jump right back in, but I’m not so sure. I guess I’ll watch it, but I don’t know how much I’ll participate in fandom in the future. I want to, I still have that desire to get involved but I don’t have the energy or desire to write meta about the actual show right now. I guess I kinda feel like everything is already being said by the other fantastic meta writers on tumblr and my opinion isn’t really needed.
The thing is, I am tired of SPN. I am tired of the game they are playing with us. I say this, knowing full well that they are dangling destiel in front of us like a carrot dangled in front of a donkey, so close but still so far. Eventually we will get our carrot – of this I am almost certain – but they sure as hell will continue to put us through a bunch of utter crap before we get there.
This is what I am fed up with. I did start re-watching season 12 and I just can’t fathom some things that drove me crazy. Like why when we were first introduced to the British men of letters, it was two strong women who ruled the screen, but by the end, it was another two generic white men to add to our already generic white guy cast. They could have written it in so many different ways to how they did.
Billy’s death pissed me off, so did Alesha’s and Tasha’s. By the time they took Eileen from us I was fuming. Then when they went and wrote off Rowena with an off screen death only told to us in description form I had given up.
On top of this they continued to write scenes of non-con, scenes of violence against POC and women that could easily be avoided whilst maintaining suspense and drama, a dodgy plot point centering around a women fighting her right to choose against the white men trying to take that choice away from her, and on top of it all, fucking Lucifer still being a big part of the show when his character should have died at the end of season 11. His entire story this season was so boring I wanted to skip most of his scenes. I hated HATED his character.
I’m sorry to be negative. The show did some wonderful things this year that I am so happy about. Dean’s story arc was wonderful. His confrontation with Mary in 12x22 had me in tears and I screamed FINALLY out loud as he opened up and admitted things that he has kept inside for his whole life. Dean held this whole season together he really did. The emotional plot was wonderful, it’s what kept me around until the finale because I could see Dabb’s plan for the characters emotional development so clearly in the subtext and later text. Well, until 12x19 for Cas because after 12x19 I don’t understand a fucking thing Cas did and I bloody hope he really has been mind wammied by Jack all this time because otherwise it doesn’t make a lick of sense for his character development.
Ultimately, what season 12 did that was GREAT was threefold:
It built up Dean’s emotional development to its climax where he has finally let Sam ‘go’ and admit the years of abuse he suffered under John, as well as admitting that he was a parent to Sam rather than a brother. Dean’s entire story throughout the whole series has been building to this point and it was WONDERFUL to see.
It built up Sam’s story in the same way, in that he was able to finally break free from under Dean’s wing and accept his own responsibility and place in the world as a whole – as a leader and hero – rather than something tainted and wrong. Season 12 signalled the end of Winchester toxic co-dependency and I was HERE FOR THAT.
It gave us destiel. Now, I say this with certainty guys, although I know it is still contested. Consider it my parting gift to you. Destiel is real and we are going there. Season 12 basically gave it to us because it did things that it cannot now backtrack on. I have never been more certain. Even AFTER 8x17, after Dean’s confession, after “He’s in love… with humanity” and “it was all about saving one human” even after 11x19 and our Hunting Husbands, I still had a whole bunch of doubt on the topic. Now though? I don’t see how it is possible to watch 12x10, 12x12, 12x19 and now, the end of 12x23 without being like “hang on a freaking second – what the hell actually is going on with these guys?” Destiel is gonna happen. This is my speculation for you. Cas will be brought back but he will be brought back wrong and probably under Jack’s control and will walk away from Dean – still crying at his feet – all cold and emotionless as if Dean was nothing to him. Dean will then stop at nothing to get him back. I predict that will happen around the mid-season finale and it will be a big moment for destiel. Another 8x17 but more intense perhaps? Another ‘crypt scene’ but this time with a love confession from both sides? Guys I see it. I can’t not see it now. The one thing season 12 did was take away my doubts. Destiel is real and it is happening and I am pretty sure we will get there by end of season 13.
The problem is, this is no longer enough for me. Even if Season 13 starts with Cas coming back to life in some spectacular beauty and the beast moment which ends in a kiss and a cut to their wedding day… its still not enough anymore. I can’t watch this series just for a ship. I can’t keep going for the fucking carrot dangling in front of me when my hoofs are bleeding and raw and my back is breaking from the weight of all the shit I’ve been forced to carry. The carrot isn’t worth it.
I used to adore this show. Not for destiel, but for the stories, the mythology, the characters and their colourful world of Supernatural things. Now, the characters are slowly reaching peak development and I am getting fed up of watching them get beat down. I want them to have their peace, their happy ending. The stories are no longer fresh and exciting. They are Lucifer and his ridiculous Nephilim baby/not baby.
I am also so fed up of Cas’s story not making sense, of him being controlled or brainwashed or forced to do things he hates. Of his absence when it makes no sense (like when Claire is involved and not a word is spoken about him) or of writers writing him so off key that he comes across idiotic. (thanks Bucklemming). I can’t keep watching the writers butcher this character I adore with all my heart.
I am so so happy for Wayward Sisters and I will support it with all my might. If only because these writers need to UNDERSTAND that they cannot keep killing off the female characters on this show like they mean nothing. Its just heartbreaking to think that we will never get Charlie, Eileen, Rowena, Billy, Alesha or any of the other female characters who have been wrongly killed off in Supernatural join the female cast of this spin off. I’m excited for Wayward Sisters more than I am for Supernatural right now, because Supernatural is just a massive disappointment for me.
I am sorry I feel this way, its been eating at me for a while. I think it’s the reason I have taken this break. I just can’t put all my time and energy into something that feels toxic to me. I live in fanfic at the moment because it is the characters I adore without the awful truth of canon – even if occasionally canon does still give us those fanfic moments – it’s the other moments that are the issue.
*sigh*
I’m sorry. Part of me desperately wants to hold on with all my might, to come back and throw myself into speculation and meta and all the stuff you guys are so awesome at, but another part of me is so so bitter its preventing me from feeling any joy from it.
Maybe when season 13 comes on I’ll forget this post and just start this blog up again. I certainly miss talking to the bloggers on here I consider my friends, I just feel that without contributing to anything I have no purpose on Tumblr, and I don’t want my negativity to affect anyone else. So in the meantime, this is goodbye. I may still visit and reblog stuff occasionally, but I won’t be writing anything for a while. A long while probably.
It’s been fun Tumblr, but from now on consider this an extended hiatus. Perhaps I’ll see you in the Autumn… perhaps this fleeting romance is over for good. I won’t know until I know. As for Supernatural, I have said my bit. Expect Destiel along with a side of bitter disappointment. Wayward Sisters will be amazing though. So long as they don’t let Bob Singer or Bucklemming anywhere near it that is.

Five of the Best: Jokes • Eurogamer.net
Five of the Best is a weekly series about the incidental details we don’t celebrate enough. We’ve talked about all kinds of things so far from Game Over screens to Scares and Villains – there’s a whole Five of the Best archive if you’re interested. But there’s so much more to talk about too.
Five of the Best works like this. Various Eurogamer writers (and friends) share memories and then you – probably outraged we haven’t included the thing you’re thinking of – can share that thing you’ve been thinking of in the comments below. Then we all have a lovely chat about it. Your collective memory has never failed to amaze us – don’t let it stop now!
What’s your favourite joke – Aliens: Colonial Marines? No, no, I don’t mean that. But what is your favourite joke? Do you have one? I can never think of one when someone asks. I cheated and had to Google one. Try this: What do pirates say when they turn 80? Go on, guess. “Aye matey!” Good, isn’t it? How about: Why did Beethoven get rid of his chickens? All they said was “Bach Bach Bach”. Or maybe: How do you make a tissue dance? Put a little boogie in it!
I think the point here is that I shouldn’t write jokes, but thankfully there are funnier people writing them in games so I don’t have to, so here’s to laughing, here’s to jokes, and here are five of the best. Happy Friday one and all!
Monkey Island magic
I encountered Monkey Island so early on in my life that I sort of expected all games to be as witty and elegant as this one was. But there is one joke right at the end that absolutely blew my tiny mind.
The game’s over and the baddie is defeated. The hero and the governor are watching fireworks in the sky – a classic victory scene. You still have dialogue options though. And what options.
“Just goes to show,” I chose, or words to that effect.
“Just goes to show what?”
“Never pay more than twenty dollars for a video game.”
Okay. Already funny. But we’re not done.
“What’s a video game?” asks the governor.
“I don’t know,” I reply. “I don’t know why I said that.”
META.

World of Warcraft gets silly
World of Warcraft – have I gone mad?! No, well, I don’t think so but then I would say that. WoW isn’t known as a funny game, although if you factor in the people you play with, it can be hilarious. Back when the game launched there was a Eurogamer guild on Bloodscalp called Elite Guard (shit name but it had the initials EG) and the guild chat was hilarious. I’d never laughed so hard at, effectively, a chat room. And the laughs kept on coming over many more weeks and months. Happy days.
But that’s not why I’ve listed World of Warcraft here. It’s here because of the jokes characters tell. If you type the command /silly into the chat box and press enter, the character you’re playing tells a joke. There are hundreds of them, a handful for each race and sex combo.
For instance, the undead male character – my main – would say, in a gravelly, sardonic voice: “Roses are gray, violets are gray, I’m dead and colorblind.” I nearly spat my coffee out when I first heard it. He also might say: “Hey diddle diddle, the mucous and the spittle. The corpse sank in the lagoon. The murloc said ‘mmmmm’ to see such a sight, and the dwarf spanked the baboon.”
This blew my mind. I cannot overemphasise how different, how alive, how charismatic this felt after coming from mute MMOs like Dark Age of Camelot. Characters didn’t do anything of the kind there, they had no voice. And I tell you what, I stood in that Undead starting area in Deathknell for ages doing nothing but standing still and telling myself jokes, lapping it up, cackling at every one.

Skip to 5.40 for the Undead male jokes. They still make me laugh!
Assassin’s Creed 2 plumbs the depths
Modern day Assassin’s Creed games are – among all those sweeping, expensive-looking vistas and blockbuster action set-pieces – wonderfully warm, witty things, graced with ample charm and good humour. That’s generally been the case since the thigh-slapping high seas adventure of Black Flag, of course, but before that – based on my admittedly hazy memories of the earlier games, at least – you’d be lucky to encounter even the slightest moment of whimsy in what was an often unwaveringly po-faced and rather self-important series.
So imagine my surprise when – after the interminable, joy-free drudgery of the original game, and the somewhat mirthless opening hours of its Renaissance-Italy-set sequel – Assassin’s Creed 2 suddenly, and out of nowhere, let rip with a moment of sublime silliness. I might even go as far as to call it the greatest video game joke of all time, but I suspect it only left such an unshakeable impression because it had all been so dreadfully serious up until then.
Partway through Assassins Creed 2, you see, beloved hero Ezio runs into his uncle out in the Italian countryside. Thrilled to see his nephew again, the jovial moustachioed gent, a local to the area, spreads his arms wide and warmly exclaims – what else? – “IT’S-A ME MARIO!”.

Everything about Portal 2
If you asked me what I thought was the funniest video game I’ve ever played it would almost be reflex at this point to gush about the writing in Portal 2. I’ve played a lot of games with good jokes, with funny moments, but there’s nothing like Portal 2’s wall to wall dedication to making the player laugh in as many ways as possible. “We didn’t jettison everything, but I absolutely do not want to try and resurrect a three-year-old meme. That seems like it would be kind of sad. It’s not a good idea.” writer Erik Wolpaw told Gamasutra back in 2010, and he wasn’t messing around. Portal 2’s consistently quick-witted gags come from not just depth but breadth, in my humble opinion. There’s the format go-tos of slapstick and ‘random’ humour that we’re probably all a bit sick of by now but they’re intertwined with irony, meta-humour, darkly-comic scenes and self-poking jabs at the absurdity of the sights around you. All of this is then bolstered by a stellar voice acting cast with honest to god comedians like Stephen Merchant playing the companion-turned-villain Wheatley.
My favourite joke of the game concerns the villainous side of Wheatley, destroying everything around him in a fit of incompetence and arrogance at the climax of the game. He has to be taken down but just like his predecessor, his clumsy but ultimately terrifying power over the automated systems of Aperture science makes him nigh on impossible to defeat. It’s a true masterpiece of a final boss battle – sheer self indulgence and bombast with rockets flying, bits of equipment exploding all around you and a cast of ridiculous personality spheres shouting out a million jokes a minute as you pick them up and chuck them around.
This game is absolutely dedicated to its comedy and could only end in one big joke, one big deconstruction of just how ridiculous the very concept of this portal gun technology is. How terrifyingly dangerous it would be in the real world. You’ve shot portals onto more surfaces you can count but they only work when you hit something that’s painted white. Why? I have absolutely no idea, but do you know what’s really big and white? The goddamn moon. That’s how you finish a boss battles in Portal 2, you shoot the boss into fucking space.

The unintentionally hilarious Heavy Rain
I’m welling up just thinking about this one. The mother of all cry-laugh inducers. Where to start? I like the cars, that bit’s very good. I love the doors – top detective, flummoxed by doors. The ice, which he can’t stand on but everyone else seems to be walking over just fine. The weird skidding around every corner! Why can’t he corner?! Why do I have to press a button to get him to go around a corner like a normal human being?! Why does it not matter if you fail to press any of the buttons?! Why are the button prompts in there in the first place if they don’t matter?! Gold. I have to assume it’s funny on purpose. It has to be – too funny not to be, too po-faced everywhere else for this bit to not stand out – and honestly the game’s so much better for it.

hellooo, you have written some of the most thoughtful & insightful meta for fruits basket & i would love to hear your thoughts on a couple of things that always frustrates me towards the end of the manga: 1. Yuki beating Kyou up as a way to knock sense into him re Tohru. I have never been a fan of the idea that physically beating someone is a good way to get them to learn a lesson. But fandom by & large seems ok with it and i wonder what i am failing to understand re necessity of violence (1)
Shortanswer: no, you’re absolutely right, the violence in that sceneis completely unnecessary.
Longanswer: let’s listen to me ramble about violence in fiction andabout why Takaya might have chosen the choices she did!
Alright,so we’ll start with violence in Fruits Basket.
Theviolence portrayed in Fruits Basket exists on a sort ofcontinuum. We have, on one end, “serious violence”–thatis, violence that leaves a lasting impact and has actual consequencesbecause it is being treated seriously. Akito’s violence is portrayedas serious violence: people who get hurt stay visibly hurt foras long as it would take them to actually heal, both the aggressorand the victim have fallout from the action, and the violent act andits consequences help drive the plot. Another example would be thegang violence with Arisa and Kyouko, or Tohru’s injury during theTrue Form arc.
Onthe other end of the spectrum is “comic violence”–that is,violence that is intended to be “funny” (regardlessof whether or not the audience actually finds it to be so) and sodoesn’t have lasting consequences and isn’t taken seriously. Kagura’sviolence to Kyou is “comic violence”: Kyou is portrayed inthe moment with overexaggerated injuries like bruises, lumps, missingteeth, blood, etc; 5 seconds later he no longer looks roughed up andis perfectly fine. Yuki’s violence to Kyou also falls toward this endof the spectrum: Yuki’s basically trying to murder Kyou, regularlythrowing him through walls etc, and while Kyou’s bruises sometimesmight last a little longer than those from Kagura he still isn’t everrealistically hurt from Yuki’s violence. Plus, Kyou getting beaten upgenerally becomes a backdrop to a joke, such as Shigure’s repeated“but my houuuuuse!” and Haru deadpan asking if he can orderchicken nuggets while Yuki rampages on Kyou upstairs. And for what itcontributes to the plot, all of this could be achieved withoutphysical violence–if we took it out, Kagura would still not respectKyou’s personal space and desires and their relationship would stillbe unhealthy, and Yuki would still constantly attack Kyou withinsults meant to wound.
Sowhy the choice to include comic violence? This is a thing we can onlyguess about, not being Takaya ourselves. It’s probably partially aproduct of its time–when I was small, around this time, LooneyTunes was still a Thing and also a huge influence on othercartoons. I mean, when I think of the word “toon,” “comicviolence” is literally one of the defining characteristics. Itwas trendy and perfectly acceptable. Culture and media is changing, but it’s a slow change, and I’m still surprised to think of a showlike Steven Universe that starts out with the expected “yayfighting monsters!” but chose to push instead to “let’sactively not fight and use our words and feelings instead!” Orthe game Undertale, which was a traumatic experience because every video game I’ve everknown is predicated on Acceptable Condoned Violence, anything youencounter in a battle you are supposed to “kill”, and howwas I supposed to know, because the game didn’t tell me up front, that I could and was supposed to just make friends with peopleinstead of murdering them all.
Bythe time of Fruits Basket, it was generally figured out thatguys beating up girls was Not Acceptable and Not Funny. “I can’thit a girl!”, etc. However, we’re still struggling with the ideathat girls being violent towards guys is, in fact, Not Acceptable andNot Funny. And the idea that guys being violent towards guys is, infact, Not Boys Being Boys but instead Toxic Masculinity HurtingEveryone. More on this in a bit, probably!
Inaddition, maybe Takaya herself liked that sort of slapstick toonhumor of “comic violence”? Though if so, she’s presumablychanged her mind since then. I haven’t really read her other work–Idon’t know how much “comic violence” might be present inthose–but it’s completely absent in Fruits Basket Another.True, there’s less of a “logical” reason to include it,since the next generation of Souma kids are well-adjusted rather thancoming from abusive backgrounds. But “comic violence” isabsent to an even greater degree than that. Unless there’s somethingin volume 3 I haven’t seen, there’s no single instance of“comic violence” in FBA. Logic should at least allowMutsuki and Hajime to playfully roughhouse with each other, hittingeach other occasionally without much force or any intent to hurt, butno. That’s not a thing; all of their friendly teasing is words-only.There’s not even a callback to Kyou’s affectionate raps to the backof the head. Actually, the only repeated physical joke is Soragreeting her relatives with flying hugs, which even Hajime doesn’tbegrudge.
(AndI think the complete and utter lack of “comic violence” inFBA, and the fact that I didn’t even notice it until I askedmyself about it while pondering this ask, is further proof of thenon-necessity of the same in the original FB.)
Nowto shift to the issue of fandom by and large seeming okay with the“comic violence” of Fruits Basket. This treads a lotof the same ground I just covered, now that I try to write it up. Forme, it’s fairly easy to give the “comic violence” a passbecause I don’t have a history with violence, so it isn’t personal tome, there aren’t any other particular reasons that it upsets me here(though sometimes, in other media, for various reasons instances of“comic violence” do upset me). I grew up with mediathat told me the narrative that “comic violence” is A-Okaybecause “it’s meant to be funny” and “we only intendedto make you laugh”, “see no one was really hurt.” Isee Kagura hit Kyou, or Yuki hit Kyou, and my brain automaticallymakes the connection before I stop to think: oh, I know what this is,I’ve seen this sort of thing before, it’s intended to be funny, soit’s fine. Later, when I think back on it, then I’m more likely tocritique it and wonder if it really was a necessary choice.
Ithink the first time Fruits Basket came around, I saw whatfelt to me a fairly even balance between people who accepted Kagura’sviolence against Kyou as “comic violence” (because girlshitting guys is non-threatening and funny! It’s everywhere so it’sprobably true!) and people who didn’t find Kagura’s violence againstKyou to be funny (girls hitting guys is not great because no abuseshould be condoned, and also it perpetuates the harmful stereotypethat no properly ~masculine~ guy can actually be hurt by girls who weall know are weak). I don’t really recall anyone picking up on Yukibeing problematic at all, though maybe that was just me. Because tobe honest, that flew under my own radar.
Thistime around, I feel like the vast majority of fandom has realizedthat Kagura’s portrayal is not, in fact, funny, that “comicviolence” is not in fact comic, and unfortunately she’sfrequently getting tossed out with the bathwater here. But now all ofa sudden I feel like I see more and more people emerging who share myown fairly-recent opinion that Yuki’s violence towards Kyou is theexact same thing and just as bad.
Ireally think Kagura and Yuki are on the same level. But what makesthe way we perceive them different is that Kagura is wrappedup in “girls hitting guys”, which we’re getting much betterat realizing is problematic, and Yuki is wrapped up in “boyswill be boys”, which is still working its way out.
(Tangent,I find it interesting that Kagura has a moment of serious violencethat’s basically a boys-will-be-boys moment? When she slaps Tohru to,ah, knock some sense into her about her feelings for Kyou… Thewhole scene intrigues me because it’s wrapped up in Kagura wearingthe least feminine outfit we’ve ever seen her in–I mean, I guess hertop certainly not masculine, but this outfit always gives me a “she’sdressed like a tomboy!” vibe–when she’s usually all aboutdressing and acting as cute and little-girl-ish as possible. And thenKagura talks about reaching a mutual understanding with their fists, very much a shonen hallmark, and how it’s easier for guys. It makesme wonder if Kagura has a bit of a difficult relationship with herown gender–or at least, the gender stereotypes–and that’s why shevalues coming off as feminine and cutesy. Because she’d rather justpunch people instead of talk about her feelings, and she won’t everbe loved if she acts like that. So she’s gotta offset herstereotypically masculine traits. Maybe! Also interesting, as this isserious violence and thus has consequences–instead of it gettinglaughed off as a joke, Kagura has to actually apologize for hittingTohru. She and Tohru stubbornly don’t apologize though; what’sinteresting is, and I’ve seen other people mention this, that the oneKagura apologizes to is Rin. Because Rin has a history with violenceand abuse, and hitting Tohru [which wasn’t okay in the first place]viscerally upset Rin, and Kagura knows that and knows that her actionwas very wrong in regards to Rin too. So while Kagura doesn’t take itback in regards to Tohru, she’s sincerely apologetic to Rin.)
Anyway, when Yuki and Kyou are violent, or Haru and Kyou, or Yuki and Manabe, etc…it’s “boys will be boys.” Boys will fight! Boys willhurt each other! Boys will do terrible dumb things because that’swhat boys do lol! There can’t be anything wrong with it becausethat’s just how boys naturally are, right? You don’t expect a boy toexercise some self-control, right?
ForYuki and Kyou, it’s exaggerated to the point of “comicviolence”. Also, for Yuki and Kyou, it’s the primary way theycommunicate with each other.
This,I believe, is the main reason that Yuki literally physically beatssense into Kyou in that scene. The violence is unnecessary, yes, asall the “comic violence” up until now has been unnecessary. But it has been part of the narrative–Yuki and Kyou beat eachother bloody every time they’re in the same room! Yuki and Kyou tryto find a way to scrap every day! Yuki and Kyou are always breakingthe house! Wow Yuki and Kyou have stopped breaking the house everyday, I’d be worried but I’m pretty sure this is a good sign???–so itdoes follow logically that, in this climactic and emotionalconfrontation, Yuki resorts to the way he’s always communicated withKyou.
Bybeating the shit out of him.
Takayacould certainly have chosen to leave the violence out. Yuki couldhave condescended at Kyou, and screamed at Kyou, and cried at Kyou, and not aimed a single physical attack at Kyou, and I have absolutelyzero doubt that the scene would have been exactly as effective. Yukiexpressed his emotions perfectly well with his words; his fists wereunnecessary. If we’d skipped the words entirely, and Yuki justpunched away at Kyou boys-will-be-boys style,my-fists-will-express-all-my-emotions, the scene would lose so muchof its impact.
Tl;dr- you aren’t failing to understand anything. In fact, you’vegrasped the situation perfectly. But this is part of a pervasivecultural and media trend, complicating the YMMV that already exists,so it’s slipped under some people’s radars even as it frustratesothers.
Itgenerally flies under my personal radar, and I myself laugh everytime I get to that scene, but it’s kind of a laugh of, like, thesheer over-the-top extra of Yuki trying to murder Kyou over a grudgeYuki’s been carrying ever since they were small and Yuki said heliked Kyou’s hair and Kyou told him to go die like ffs Yukiget over it wtf happened to your characterdevelopment??? YUKI CHILL.
(alsoI feel like I had more tangents than this, but maybe in the monthI’ve been sitting on this mulling it over I forgot some of them??)

On-Page SEO: Anatomy of a Perfectly Optimized Page (2016 Update)
When it comes to on-page SEO, I’m sure you’ve heard enough about meta tags and keyword density for one lifetime.
If you’re looking for some practical strategies that you can use on your site today, then you’ll love this infographic.
It’s a simple checklist that will bring in more search engine traffic from every piece of content that you publish:
Bonus:Download a free checklist that will show you how to quickly leverage these strategies. Includes 2 bonus on-page SEO techniques not found in this post.
Here’s my take on the on-page SEO insights from the infographic:
1. Use SEO-Friendly URLs
Google has stated that the first 3-5 words in a URL are given more weight.
So make your URLs short and sweet.
And always include your target keyword in your URL.
In other words:
Avoid ugly URLs: backlinko.com/p=123 Or long URLs: backlinko.com/8/6/16/cat=SEO/on-page-seo-is-so-amazing-omg-its-the-best
Brian's Take
Click “play” to see the tip:
2. Start Title With Keyword
Your title tag is the most important on-page SEO factor.
In general, the closer the keyword is to the beginning of the title tag, the more weight it has with search engines.
Brian's Take
You don’t always need to start your title tag with your target keyword. But if there’s a keyword that you’re gunning for, try to put it towards the beginning of your title.
3. Add Modifiers To Your Title
Using modifiers like “2016”, “best”, “guide”, and “review” can help you rank for long tail versions of your target keyword.
Brian's Take
Click “play” to see the tip:
4. Wrap Your Blog Post Title in an H1 Tag
The H1 tag is your “headline tag”. Most CMS’s (like WordPress) automatically add the H1 tag to your blog post title. If that’s the case, you’re all set.
But some themes override this setting. Check your site’s code to make sure your title gets the H1 love it deserves.
Brian's Take
I used to assume that WordPress hooked up my post titles with H1 tags…until I actually looked at my site’s code.
Then I realized that WordPress themes sometimes use H1 tags to increase text size. As an example, my email opt-in area used to be wrapped in an H1 tag:
It’s worth checking out your site’s code to make sure you only have one H1 tag per page. And that H1 tag should contain your target keyword.
5. Dazzle with Multimedia
Text can only take your content so far. Engaging images, videos and diagrams can reduce bounce rate and increase time on site: two critical user interaction ranking factors.
Brian's Take
You probably notice that I use a lot of images, diagrams, and screenshots here at Backlinko.
That’s because I firmly believe that it makes my content straight up better.
But it has a nice SEO benefit to boot: multimedia helps you boost those user-interaction signals that Google has been paying more attention to.
And it increases the perceived value of your content –which means that people are more likely to link to it.
6. Wrap Subheadings in H2 Tags
Include your target keyword in at least once subheading…and wrap it in an H2 tag.
Brian's Take
This definitely won’t make or break your on-page SEO efforts. But my tests have shown me that wrapping your target keyword in an H2 tag can make a dent.
Here’s an example of this strategy in action (target keyword=”SEO strategy”):
7. Drop Keyword in First 100 Words
Your keyword should appear in the first 100-150 words of your article.
Brian's Take
This is something that you probably do naturally.
But a lot of people start their posts off with a long, meandering intro…and use their keyword for the first time MUCH later.
Instead, drop your keyword somewhere in the first 100 words or so. This helps Google understand what your page is all about.
8. Use Responsive Design
Google started penalizing mobile unfriendly sites in 2015. And they’re likely crack down even more in the future. If you want to make your site mobile-friendly, I recommend Responsive Design.
Brian's Take
I’d be surprised if your site isn’t mobile-friendly yet. But if it isn’t, maybe the incentive of more search engine traffic will push you to take the leap.
And if you’re going to make your site mobile-friendly, I HIGHLY recommend responsive design. In my opinion, it’s ideal for user experience. Plus Google prefers it.
9. Use Outbound Links
This is an easy, white hat SEO strategy to get more traffic.
Outbound links to related pages helps Google figure out your page’s topic. It also shows Google that your page is a hub of quality info.
Brian's Take
Not linking out might be the #1 on-page SEO mistake that I see people make. I try to use 2-4x outbound links per 1000 words. That’s a good rule of thumb for most sites.
Keep in mind that the sites you link out to reflect on you. So make sure to link out to authority sites whenever possible.
10. Use Internal Links
Internal linking is SO money. Use 2-3 in every post.
Brian's Take
If you want to see a great example of how to internal link on your site, check out Wikipedia.
They add keyword-rich internal links to every entry:
Obviously, they can get away with 50+ internal links per page because they’re Wikipedia. I recommend a simpler (and safer) approach: link to 2-5 older posts whenever you publish a new one.
11. Boost Site Speed
Google has stated on the record that page loading speed is an SEO ranking signal. You can boost your site speed by using a CDN, compressing images, and switching to faster hosting.
Make sure your site doesn’t take more than 4 seconds to load: MunchWeb found that 75% of users wouldn’t re-visit a site that took longer than 4 seconds to load.
You can easily check your site’s loading speed using the excellent GTMetrix.com:
Brian's Take
CDNs and cache plugins are nice, but investing in premium hosting is the #1 thing you can do to make your site faster.
$5/month hosts are decent for the money you’re paying. But they don’t hook you up with serious speed.
I’ve literally dropped load times from 6 seconds to less than 2 seconds by switching from a $5 shared hosting plan to a top-notch host (I use Synthesis Hosting here at Backlinko).
From a conversion and SEO standpoint, the ROI of premium hosting can’t be beat.
12. Sprinkle LSI Keywords
LSI keywords are synonyms that Google uses to determine a page’s relevancy (and possibly quality). Sprinkle them into every post.
Brian's Take
I don’t go nuts about LSI keywords because I usually write REALLY long content.
(Long content increases the odds that you’ll naturally use LSI keywords).
But if you want to make 100% sure that you’re using LSI keywords, search for your keyword in Google and scroll down to the “Searches Related to…” area at the bottom of the page:
Toss one or two of these into your post.
13. Image Optimization
Make sure at least one image file name includes your target keyword (for example, on_page_SEO.png) and that your target keyword is part of your image Alt Text.
Brian's Take
Another reason to optimize your images for SEO: it gives search engines another clue of what your page is about…which can help it rank in organic search.
When Google sees images with alt text “blue widgets” and “green widgets” it tells them: “this page is about widgets”.
14. Use Social Sharing Buttons
Social signals may not play a direct role in ranking your site. But social shares generate more eyeballs on your content.
And the more eyeballs you get, the more likely someone is to link to you. So don’t be shy about placing social sharing buttons prominently on your site.
In fact, a study by BrightEdge found that prominent social sharing buttons can increase social sharing by 700%.
Brian's Take
Social signals aren’t an important part of the Google algorithm. But social shares on sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ may give you an indirect rankings boost.
15. Post Long Content
The SEO adage “length is strength” was supported by our industry study which found that longer content tends to rank significantly higher on Google’s first page.
Aim for at least 1900 words for every piece of content that you publish.
Brian's Take
As a rule, I make sure all of my articles have 1000+ words of meaty, useful content.
Longer content helps you rank better for your target keyword and brings in more long tail traffic…a win-win!
16. Boost Dwell Time
If someone hits their back button immediately after landing on a page, it tells Google in black-and-white: this is low quality page.
That’s why Google uses “dwell time” to size up your content’s quality. Increase your average dwell time by writing long, engaging content that keeps people reading.
Brian's Take
Want to improve your dwell time (FAST)? Use the tactics from my SEO copywriting guide (especially bucket brigades):
Here are a few more important on-page SEO factors that I didn’t have room to include in the infographic:
Quality Content: I know that you’re sick and tired of hearing about “quality content”.
Even though search engines have no direct way of determining quality, they have plenty of indirect methods, such as:
Repeat visitors
Chrome bookmarks
Time on site
Dwell time
Google searches for your brand
In other words, great content definitely won’t hurt you. So there’s no reason NOT to publish awesome stuff every single time.
Encourage Blog Comments: I’ve long suspected that sites with lots of high-quality blog comments get a slight edge in Google’s search results.
That’s why I wasn’t surprised when Google said that having a thriving community on your site can help “a lot”with rankings:
That’s why it’s smart to encourage people to comment on your blog posts.
Maximize Organic CTR: There’s no doubt in my mind that Google uses organic click-through-rate as a ranking signal.
And even if they don’t, you STILL want to optimize your Google listing for CTR.
(More clicks=more traffic)
This video will show you exactly how to do it:
Here’s How to Use These Techniques For Your Site
I made a free on-page SEO checklist for you that will help you put these strategies into action for your site.
It outlines — step-by-step —exactly how to use the techniques that I talked about in this post…including 2 strategies that I didn’t include in the infographic.

How can you know someone’s true motives?
On Tuesdays I write about the top voted question on Ask Berkun (see the lovely archive). This week’s question came from Faisal [22 votes]:
Appearances can be deceptive. How can I, as someone who tends to accept things at face value, develop the habit of searching for true motives of others?
In a practical sense the answer is easy: stop accepting things at face value! You need to ask more questions and think critically about the people you encounter. There are three ways to do this, all listed below.
However at a philosophical level, people are complicated. We often have multiple motives, some of which we might not fully understand when we act. Often we’re conflicted about our desires, regardless of what actions we take. And the reasons that drive our choices in life change over time: we don’t live life with a single consistent unwavering motive for anything. The more intimate the relationship you have with a person, the more complex (and possibly rewarding) it can be to understand their intentions and how your choices impact each other.
That said, here are three ways to try to know why someone does what they do.
1. Ask them
Few people take the time to simply ask direct questions to people they encounter. Somehow it seems rude or confrontational, but if done in a friendly way it can enhance your mutual understanding of each other. To ask something like “thanks for helping me move my things, but I’m curious: why are you helping me?” raises the sophistication of your interaction. Instead of just being a transaction (e.g. buying you a cup of coffee), it now because a personal conversation about intentions and expectations (e.g. how do you relate to me or to people in general? Do you expect something in return? Is this about your own sense of identity?). What they say and how they say it will give you more data to consider about their motives than the actions they take alone.
2. Exercise your judgement
Any new experience can always be compared to past ones that are similiar. You simply need to ask yourself questions like:
What are the possible reasons, positive and negative, why this person is behaving in this way?
What reputation have they earned with me (or with others) in the past that I can put this recent act into context with?
In the past who else do I know that has behaved this way? What did their intentions turn out to be?
If you can make a list of similiar situations, and think through who else you’ve known in your life who you’ve been in them with, you’ll naturally engage your own deeper judgement.
3. Use the judgement of others
You can always ask someone you trust for their opinion. This can be particularly valuable if your trusted friend also knows the person you’re curious about. Simply ask them: “Hey Jane: Rupert keeps buying me coffee every morning. What do you think this means?” Maybe they’ve known Rupert for years as a friendly, generous person, and the gesture is nothing more than that. Or perhaps they share some insight into how Rupert is up for a possible promotion, and is trying to subtly raise people’s awareness of what he does around the office.
In the end we have to decide how much we trust other people and there is no perfectly foolproof way to do that. Sometimes we trust people too much and other times we don’t trust them enough. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we can learn from each oversight, and slowly approach a more accurate way to assess both why the people around us make the choices that they do, and who in our lives is worthy of our deepest trust.

There are at least 200 ranking factors in Google’s algorithm (not to mention RankBrain), which means a thorough SEO audit could lead to dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of SEO tasks. Few companies have the budget or resources to complete every potential SEO to-do item — and doing so would be an incredible waste of time and resources anyway. Some SEO tasks are critical and cannot be ignored; others just aren’t worth your time.
Prioritizing an SEO task list is crucial. Focus your resources on SEO work that is actually going to improve rankings, increase clicks and drive revenue. Most companies should focus on engagement SEO work, but technical tasks can’t be ignored completely — especially if you have major problems.
Critical technical SEO problems
Audit any website for technical SEO issues — even the world’s top-performing sites — and I promise you will find dozens, if not hundreds of things that “should” be done. The list of technical SEO work can go on endlessly, if you let it.
But what technical work will move the needle on organic rankings?
Recently, my team conducted 15 audits of different web properties for a large tech company. The client was concerned that some unknown technical change or issue was severely limiting their organic search growth. Though we found dozens of technical SEO issues, most of our recommendations were for engagement SEO tasks. None of the technical issues we discovered were critical, and resolving them wouldn’t have provided noteworthy results. However, this thorough audit was still meaningful for the company — they were able to move past their unfounded concerns to focus on expanding content and improving user experience (UX) to drive higher rankings.
Critical technical SEO issues are rare, but not nonexistent. No amount of engagement SEO work will be effective if a site has major technical issues, so it’s crucial to prioritize red-flag technical SEO issues above any engagement SEO tasks. Critical technical SEO issues include:
Site speed. Google has said that site speed is a ranking factor, and study after study continues to show that faster sites rank better, get more engagement and close more business. Google’s own research shows that most mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than three seconds to load.
Mobile performance. In addition to site speed, every other aspect of a site’s mobile performance is an important technical consideration as well. With mobile-first indexing right around the corner, mobile deserves its own discussion (see below).
Blocked resources. If search engines can’t index or crawl your site, resolving this issue should be your first priority. Allowing site content to be indexed is one of the quickest ways to improve incoming organic traffic. Crawl issues may be caused by a few factors: an error in your robots.txt file, unintentional noindex tags in site meta data, or server issues that limit Googlebot’s crawl rate.
Google penalties. Hacked sites, spam content and unnatural backlink profiles can all lead to severe ranking penalties. Sites with manual actions can be demoted in search results or removed altogether. If Google Search Console lists a manual action on your site, take steps immediately to resolve the issue — disavow low-quality links and delete hacked or spam pages — and submit your site for reconsideration.
Significant URL and/or redirect problems. Did you launch a new site and forget to implement redirects? Perhaps that was two or three launches past, and those problems were never fully resolved? Is your site generating thousands of meaningless unique URLs? When URL and redirect problems reach a critical mass, they can pose a significant risk to your organic traffic.
Other issues. Additional technical SEO issues — like fixing every single broken link and setting up redirects for every possible 404 imaginable — can also be critical at times, but these tasks fall into more of a gray area. If the issue is severe, fixing it is critical. If you have a handful (or even hundreds) of minor errors on a large site, and fixing them isn’t straightforward, you might be able to hold off.
Always ask your SEO and technical teams to summarize the effort required for, and the anticipated impact of, SEO work. If the effort is quite large, and/or the anticipated impact is low — or it “may or may not actually help us” — then move on.
Critical mobile SEO issues
Mobile SEO is part technical and part engagement, and 100 percent critical. As Google prepares to roll out mobile-first indexing, optimizing your site for mobile is more important than ever. After resolving technical SEO issues, audit your site for major mobile red flags:
Your site isn’t optimized for mobile. Mobile-friendliness is already a ranking factor for mobile search, and mobile-first indexing is about to make it important all around. Your site has to fit on a mobile screen, load fast enough for a mobile audience, and be free of mobile errors.
Your content isn’t optimized for mobile. Transitioning your site to a mobile-friendly format is only the first step in improving mobile usability. The content itself needs to be designed for the mobile user. Make sure that buttons and links that are large enough for thumbs to tap, write content in shorter paragraphs, center-align images, and maybe even vertically align media.
You use intrusive, annoying pop-ups. In January, 2017, Google enacted a penalty on sites that display intrusive interstitials over content. If you are among the many sites that display pop-ups or lightboxes over content on page load, it’s time to either remove that code or adjust it to display when users leave a page — not when they arrive.
With critical technical and mobile tasks complete, your site’s framework will be set up for the tasks that will make the most meaningful impact over time: engagement SEO.
Critical engagement SEO issues
The most commonly recommended engagement SEO task is creating new, high-quality content. Adding quality content to your site is an important task, but when it comes to fixing a site’s SEO, optimizing existing content comes first.
Red flags to look for when auditing a site’s current engagement SEO include:
Lack of conversions. If content on your site doesn’t cater to your visitors’ intent, conversions will suffer. So the most critical engagement SEO task on your list should be reviewing existing content against keyword/user intent research. It’s possible that customers at the top of the purchasing funnel are finding content that caters to the bottom. They’re not converting because your content didn’t satisfy their needs.
Low click-through rate (CTR) in spite of high rankings. If your CTR is low on pages with high rankings, it’s possible your competitors are stealing traffic with featured snippets. Featured snippets offer an opportunity to drive organic traffic by ranking in position “zero.” Perform a depersonalized search of your keywords and see if competitors appear in position zero. If so, prioritize optimizing existing content for featured snippets.
Few organic social shares. If you’re struggling to earn shares of your content on social media, it’s likely that you have a content quality problem. Review your site’s existing content: is it unique and comprehensive? Are your headlines enticing? Take time to A/B test headlines, make sure that your content caters to users’ intents, rewrite fluff content, expand shallow content and experiment with different content formats.
Lack of earned links. If other sites aren’t linking to yours, it’s another sign that you have either a content quality problem (refer to the advice above) or a PR problem. Sites can’t link to yours if they don’t know you exist. Take time to expand your efforts on social channels, guest blog for publications in your industry and build relationships with industry influencers.
There are many important engagement SEO issues that should be high priority but are not necessarily critical. As an example, cleaning up duplicate content through redirects or the use of canonical tags should certainly be high priority, but it’s not necessarily critical, since there’s no ranking penalty associated with duplicate content.
Critical reporting issues
One commonly overlooked, yet critical, SEO task is ensuring analytics data is clean — and that it demonstrates impact on your company’s bottom line. Clean and meaningful analytics data allows you to gather crucial insights about your site’s performance in search, and to provide evidence of the ROI of your SEO efforts. In addition to rectifying critical engagement and technical SEO issues, take on the task of cleaning up your analytics reports:
Ensure all site pages are tagged for analytics reporting.
Filter known referral spammers from your reports.
Set up custom views and goals.
Align goals with bottom-line business metrics.
Clean analytics data allows you to effectively track search results pages (SERPs), monitor bounce rates and measure click-through rates on important calls to action. Additionally, as you begin expanding your marketing initiatives to different channels, analytics will play an important role in highlighting what’s working, and what should be abandoned.
The future of the buyer’s digital experience
Technology is advancing rapidly, and buyer expectations and demands are evolving alongside these innovations. Today’s critical SEO priorities will be tomorrow’s outdated practices, because search engines are designed to cater to people, and people change.
To that end, the most critical task for any SEO is to pay attention.
Pay attention to your audience and their needs. Provide the information they’re looking for. Simplify their lives, and chase the monthly active user — repeat, loyal visitors — not just increased organic traffic.
