six hundred and seventy five: 2019
The annual year in review entry. I’ve written this post nine times, one for every year of this decade. I reread the very first one, from 2010, aloud to my mother the other night. My writer’s voice is so chipper in it, so young. I had just started college. In so many ways, I had barely lived. I was about to list off all the things I hadn’t yet done, as an explanation. But the truth is, even now, having done at least a few of those things, I still have barely lived. I want to remember that, to bottle up that feeling of wistfulness for a younger self, that protective inclination to wait for things to get better and worse, because I know I still need it. There is still so much I haven’t done, so much I want to do. Ways to spend the next few decades, if I’m lucky enough to have them.
Last year at this time, I think I was home alone with Cory. I can’t remember it perfectly. The past few years have blurred together in that regard. Was this the year that Mariah Carey sang badly during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve? I’ll look it up after I write this. The point is, I welcomed in the new year alone, but not really, and then received a flurry of text messages from my mother and brother and so many friends. January passed in New York for the most part. I went to my favorite bar every week, first with Liz and then with Vivian. I got bad news one night about a fellowship and the next night, I found out that my fellowship paper was selected for an academic conference. I felt like Even Steven, losing one thing, gaining another. By the time I made it back to Boston, for the spring semester, it was the end of the month. That last week became so important, especially in retrospect. I met a man from the past in one of my classes, someone I knew vaguely from my time at Swarthmore. February was about him. And so was March and April and May.
I used to keep details off my blog, because I was afraid of people reading and piecing together the truth. I wanted to be polite and coy. Now, I guess I don’t really know who is still reading this. And maybe I also don’t care. If you know me, really know me, you know what happened. If you don’t, well: in February, this blast from the past man sent me an email about coffee. I said yes and we spent hours together, walking around Cambridge, the pink sky of the new moon above our heads. Then he asked me to go to the Arnold Arboretum. We never went. Instead, we talked for hours in another coffee shop. Uncharacteristically, I asked to see his place and after I met his roommates, in-between bites of fig newtons, he leaned over and whispered: Can I kiss you? His tongue slipped into my mouth in the darkness of his living room. He kissed me again on his doorstep and my head spun on the lyft ride home. I threw up hours two hours later, from the hunger induced migraine. I didn’t eat at all that day, except for the cookies in his house and the lettuce wrapped in turkey at midnight in my bed. Of course I threw up. The next week, we went out again. Later, in my bed, wrapped up in his wiry, tattooed arms, I was just happy. That was when he told me, that he’s an alcoholic and an addict. It should have changed something for me, it should have set off an alarm. It didn’t.
Four days later, he relapsed. He had cancelled and then un-cancelled our date. I met him at a Starbucks and on the T back to his place, our legs touched. I felt bad, terrible in a way that I couldn’t name. We watched some Netflix original reality show and then, in his bed, we had sex. We kissed. He told me about his history of self harm and severe mental illness. I talked about my own trauma. It was not a good date. I couldn’t sleep after. In the morning, after he made me eggs and I realized he would not be going to his next AA meeting, I asked, trying not to cry, Will I see you again? He said of course, and then he backed me into a wall and kissed me with a boyish glee. I felt relieved and stupid. Three days later, he told me he couldn’t make it to my place for dinner. He said that he felt like he had encountered me in the wrong moment of his life, that he couldn’t stop drinking, that he was checking himself into a facility, that I meant something to him. I cried that whole weekend. I barely ate. No one could help me.
It was like this for months. Every interaction between us charmed and hurt me. When he was doing well, I was joyous. Otherwise, I was miserable. I skipped meals. I had nightmares. I cried alone in my room, on walks around campus. I lost weight and inches. I felt like I was dying. Somehow, in that strange internal darkness, I realized I was not okay. I wanted to be okay, more than anything. I felt bad all the time and I was tired of feeling bad. In April, I started seeing a therapist. In May, I started seeing a nutritionist.  I went to a support group meeting and read literature about codependency. I felt like it was my fault, my emotions, my own shit. I called my mother and Vivian and Michael. I was defensive about this guy. Addiction is a disease, an addict is not a Bad Person, but he can be a deeply troubled person.
And then, after all of that, one day in May, he told me that he had gotten involved with someone. It was the way he said it. Two weeks before, in his bed, he had asked if he could undress me. I told him then, sitting outside the Harvard Square T stop, that he was a coward. He flinched, like I hit him. I said, I thought I loved you, but you aren’t who I thought you were. I guess, I didn’t really love you then. I also said, I’m sorry if that hurt you, I don’t mean to hurt you. And he told me, his eyes glassy, that I meant something to him. Of course, I knew that. Of course, it didn’t matter.
I skipped some stuff, or I made it seem small. In May, when I went to that support group meeting, I actually spoke in the group. I said, Every day I feel this intense pressure to try my best. I want to be kind and generous and patient and brave and good. But it’s so much work, being that way. Sometimes, I can’t do it. Sometimes, I just don’t have it in me. On those days, I want to give myself permission, to simply try. On those days, “best” is not the goal. The goal is to keep at it, whatever it is. So, I went to classes and socialized and asked for help. I told my therapist in April, that coming to therapy meant that I wasn’t hopeless, that I hadn’t given up on myself. In March, I presented my paper at an academic conference, as a single author. I was also on a poetry panel with Trista, Amanda, Cyrus, and Iain. How insane to be there with them, to be included in a family of poets.
In June, the man disappeared, moved away without a real goodbye. At the time, I was devastated. I can’t describe the feeling of abandonment, but I thought: love is not for me. I thought it through June and July. I went out with a series of inconsequential men. There’s a photo I saved on my phone, after one of those dates. He wasn’t a bad guy, just boring, just rude. I came home and cried until my mascara had spread across my face. I went back to New York in July, and in between visiting with friends and volunteering at camp, I had a hilarious summer fling, not a story just something for friends to gossip about. Even then, I was lonely. I didn’t run away from it, though. I recognized it. I thought, I should keep trying. Maybe I would find a good thing.
August had me dog-sitting and transliterating Sanskrit books and gearing up for the final year of my master’s degree and looking into various doctoral programs. It was also when I went on a first date with this handsome, funny, smart, and unbelievably kind man, who would eventually become my boyfriend— how weird that word looks here, how funny that it means something to me after all these years. It has felt like emotional whiplash, this year, loving two men. Looking back, it should be easy to say oh that wasn’t really love. But that’s not true. I loved two people this year, just so differently. If the first love made me nervous, the second makes me calm. I was on a bus back to Boston after Thanksgiving and the traffic was terrible and I felt an ugly irritation bubble inside me because of my seat neighbor. I thought about my boyfriend then, his easy smile, how he rubs my back when I cough. What a small thing, but I felt lighter just thinking about it. It sounds silly and cheesy, I know. But I don’t want to belittle it, not here. I don’t think I have ever really felt so good to be with someone before. It is so new to me, this joy, this stability. I don’t want to take it for granted.
I wrote in my journal a few days ago, that I’m not sure if this relationship is good because he is so good, or because I have done the work of trying to lead a healthier life. Is this just a byproduct of one or the other? Or, as Liz says, is this what happens when two Virgos come together? I don’t know, I loved a Virgo once before, and I don’t remember ever feeling this light. This is different. He is different.
In September, I went to Denmark for my ten year reunion camp reunion. I started this blog right after that iconic summer, 16 and strangely tan from all that northern sun. From October through December, I applied to doctoral programs. Yes, again. We’ll see what happens. For the first time, I don’t really know what I want in my future, but I’m trying to trust in the universe to guide me there. I know I want love. It’s hard for me to admit that. I used to scorn women who named that in their list of goals, but it’s important, as important as everything else. I want to feel close to someone. I want a life of meaning, even if it just means something to me. I want to write. I hate that I ever stopped doing that. I feel sometimes like I have wasted my potential there, in writing professionally. I hope that’s not true. I am not ready to give this up, this dream that could still turn into something.
Something that I said a lot this year: whatever happens, I’ll be okay. During a depressive episode a few weeks ago, I thought I was losing everyone in my life, that everyone secretly hated me. What I told myself then, was not that I was crazy or wrong, but that I could deal with it. It’s true. If that happened, I could deal with it. But I hate that response. I wish I fought more. I wish I didn’t turn over so easily. Not that I think I could change someone’s mind. But I wish I didn’t just accept the worst case scenario. Anyway, maybe it’s strange even to debate this. The truth is so far from the worst case scenario. In fact, right now the truth is I am so fucking lucky. Ten years ago, I was just a high school student whining on the internet. Today, I am a Harvard graduate student; I am an author; I have a publication list that makes professors raise their eyebrows; people care about what I write and think; there are people who love me, really love me; I am healthier and happier than I ever thought I deserved to be. I worked for this. I earned it. I didn’t give up on me.
I can’t predict anything about the future. I’m always so hilariously wrong. Mostly I hope I never stop trying. 2020 still sounds like a fiction, but it’s real, it’s happening, it’s here. It’s funny, I only ever feel that surprised by joy. I hope that never changes.

Missouri man bedridden for 11 years invented a surgery and cured himself
https://embed-prod.vemba.io/vemba-embed.js
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Doug Lindsay was 21 and starting his senior year at Rockhurst University, a Jesuit college in Kansas City, when his world imploded.
After his first day of classes, the biology major collapsed at home on the dining room table, the room spinning around him.
It was 1999. The symptoms soon became intense and untreatable. His heart would race, he felt weak and he frequently got dizzy. Lindsay could walk only about 50 feet at a time and couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes.
“Even lying on the floor didn’t feel like it was low enough,” he said.
The former high school track athlete had dreamed of becoming a biochemistry professor or maybe a writer for “The Simpsons.”
Instead, he would spend the next 11 years mostly confined to a hospital bed in his living room in St. Louis, hamstrung by a mysterious ailment.
Doctors were baffled. Treatments didn’t help. Lindsay eventually realized that if he wanted his life back, he would have to do it himself.
His journey since has amazed medical professionals.
“He did something extraordinary,” said John Novack, spokesman for Inspire, a healthcare social network for rare and chronic-disease patients. When people hear Lindsay’s story, Novack said, they often say, “I can do something similar for my kid.”
His mother was a living prophecy
Whatever was wrong with him ran in the family.
By the time Lindsay was 18 months old, his mother was so weak she could no longer pick him up.
By the time he was 4 she could no longer walk. She did manage to pick him up one more time that year, when he was choking on a jawbreaker. She saved his life.
Otherwise, she was too frail. She lived for decades, mostly bedridden with the same condition that stole her son’s twenties. After years of tests, she determined her condition was related to her thyroid, but she was too sick to travel to the Mayo Clinic to get more specialized care, Lindsay said.
Lindsay’s aunt also developed the same ailment, growing so feeble she couldn’t tie her own shoes.
As a teenager, watching his family members sidelined from life, Lindsay wondered whether his body was a ticking time bomb, too.
That day in 1999, the alarm went off.
“When I called my mom that night to tell her I needed to drop out (of college), we both knew,” he said. The family curse had struck.
He found answers in discarded medical textbooks
From the fall of 1999 onward, Lindsay was bedridden about 22 hours a day.
“If I was up, it was because I was eating or going to the bathroom,” he said.
Lindsay immersed himself in medical research, determined to find a way out. He saw specialists from endocrinology, neurology, internal medicine and other specialties. When one doctor was out of ideas, he referred Lindsay to a psychiatrist.
That’s when Lindsay he realized he’d have to figure his predicament out on his own.
While in college he had picked up a 2,200-page endocrinology textbook near a garbage can, hoping to use it to figure out what condition his mom had. In it, he found an important passage discussing how adrenal disorders could mirror thyroid disorders.
He zeroed in on his adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys on either side of the lower abdomen.
Using a stash of aging medical textbooks, Lindsay hypothesized that a whole class of autonomic nervous-system disorders could exist beyond the established categories of what most endocrinologists or neurologists knew about.
He cobbled together cash for a computer, had an old college roommate bring it over, and got to work.
Lindsay soon stumbled on the website for the National Dysautonomic Research Foundation, delighted an entire organization was dedicated to researching the type of disorder plaguing him and his family. He asked the foundation to send him literature about emerging research in the field.
None of the diseases the foundation was examining fit Lindsay’s pattern of symptoms. But he was getting closer.
He convinced a researcher who believed in him
Lindsay soon decided he needed a partner — not just a physician but a scientist curious enough to take on a rare case and spend long hours with him parsing it out.
The best place to find that person, he reasoned, was at the American Autonomic Society’s annual conference, attended by scientists from around the world who focused on nervous system disorders.
In 2002, he give a presentation about his disease at the group’s meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina. To get there, Lindsay bought a row of airline tickets so that, with the help of friends, he could lay across several seats during the flight.
Lindsay arrived at the conference in a wheelchair, wearing a suit and tie, and presented himself as a Jesuit-trained scientist. He tried to comport himself like a grad student or a junior colleague to the scholars in the audience, not like a patient.
He was just a scientist living an experiment in his own body. During his talk, Lindsay argued that a certain drug might help him.
Several of the scientists disagreed with Lindsay’s hypotheses about his ailment. But that wasn’t unexpected. He didn’t even have a bachelor’s degree and he was telling doctors from Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health and the Cleveland Clinic something their medical training told them was impossible.
“They didn’t patronize me. They treated me like a scientist,” Lindsay said. “I was entering into a world of science I couldn’t participate in because I was at home and couldn’t be a grad student.”
Dr. H. Cecil Coghlan, a medical professor at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, approached Lindsay after his presentation. Coghlan said he thought Lindsay was on to something.
At last, Lindsay had a medical ally.
His first innovation was repurposing a drug
In early 2004, one of Lindsay’s friends rented an SUV, loaded a mattress in the back and drove him, lying flat, 500 miles to Birmingham.
Lindsay suspected his body was producing too much adrenaline. He knew of a drug called Levophed, which is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to raise blood pressure in some critically ill patients. Levophed is basically an injection of noradrenaline, which counters the symptoms created by excess adrenaline.
It hadn’t been done before, but Lindsay convinced Coghlan to repurpose the drug so he could live on a 24/7 noradrenaline drip for the next six years.
Lindsay spent “every second of every day” hooked up to an IV. It stabilized his condition and allowed him to be active for short periods of time around the house.
“I was no longer at risk of losing everything,” Lindsay said.
Still, other than doctors’ visits, a high school reunion and a few weddings, Lindsay’s autonomic dysfunction kept him mostly confined to the house he grew up in well beyond his twenties.
Why was he so sick, he wondered? Something was dumping way too much adrenaline into his blood.
Coghlan told him he might have an adrenal tumor. But three scans of his adrenal glands all came back negative.
Discouraged but not deterred, Lindsay did the only thing he could do: He dove back into the medical literature.
And he came up with a treasure.
Later he diagnosed a disorder doctors didn’t believe could exist
Lindsay suspected there might be something in his adrenal gland that acted like a tumor, but wasn’t one.
A fourth scan in 2006 showed his adrenals “glowing brightly,” Lindsay said, an abnormality consistent with his new theory.
Coghlan called Lindsay and said, “We found it!” The diagnosis: bilateral adrenal medullary hyperplasia.
In layman’s terms, it means the medullas, or inner regions, of his adrenal glands were enlarged and acting like tumors. His adrenal glands were producing way too much adrenaline.
Experts in the field doubted the diagnosis. But Coghlan put his professional reputation on the line to back it.
As Lindsay delved into more medical literature, he found only 32 recorded cases of bilateral adrenal medullary hyperplasia.
And he fixed on what seemed like a simple solution: If he could cut out the medullas of his adrenal glands — sort of like slicing into a hard-boiled egg and removing the yolk — his health would improve.
Dr. Chris Bauer, Lindsay’s personal physician, calls his ailment an “atypical presentation of a rare disease.”
“They don’t really write textbooks based on that,” Bauer said. “We were were all learning with Doug as we went along.”
Then he pioneered a new surgery
Lindsay finally came to a bold conclusion. “If there isn’t a surgery,” he decided, “I’m going to make one.”
His first big lead came in 2008. He found a 1980 study from a scientist at Georgia State University, which he summed up as: “You slice the rat’s adrenal gland with a razor blade and squeeze it so the medulla pops out like a pimple.”
Then he found that another version of the adrenal medulla extraction had been done at Harvard. Renowned professor Walter Bradford Cannon had performed the surgery on cats in 1926. Lindsay found records of the surgery being done on dogs as well.
He built a 363-page PDF which proposed a first-ever human adrenal medullectomy.
Then he spent the next 18 months working to find a surgeon who would oversee the unorthodox procedure.
Pioneering a new surgery is a high-wire act for ethical and financial reasons as well. Surgeons could risk losing their license by performing an unproven operation, especially if complications arose. And insurance companies tend to not reimburse patients for non-standard procedures.
Because many of the doctors in that specialized field knew each other, Lindsay was careful where he pitched the idea that might save his life.
Eventually he recruited a surgeon from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. In September 2010 Lindsay went to the university hospital, where the doctor successfully extracted one of his adrenal medullas.
Three weeks after the procedure, Lindsay could sit upright for three hours. By Christmas Eve, he had the strength to walk a mile to church.
As he stood in the back of the church during midnight Mass, it finally felt like hope was winning.
But progress was slow. In 2012, he underwent a second surgery at Washington University in St. Louis to remove the medulla from his remaining adrenal gland.
A year later, he was well enough to fly with friends to the Bahamas. It was the first time in his life the Midwesterner had seen the ocean.
By early 2014, he was coming off some of his meds.
Coghlan, his champion, lived just long enough to see Lindsay’s remarkable recovery. He died in 2015.
Now he’s helping other rare-disease patients
Against the odds, Lindsay had found a way to save himself.
But his mother was too delicate to be moved to another facility, let alone endure the surgery her son pioneered. She died in 2016.
She didn’t get to see him walk across the stage to graduate that year from Rockhurst University with a bachelor’s degree in biology, 16 years after he originally expected to begin his career.
Lindsay is now 41 years old. Many of the friends with whom he planned to graduate are now married, with kids in grade school.
“You can’t recapture the past,” Lindsay said.
Today he still lives in his childhood home in St. Louis. He needs to take nine medications per day, and his health is far from perfect, but he has his life back.
He’s not exactly the biology professor he dreamed of being at 21, but he’s not far off the mark. He’s leveraging his experience into a new career as a medical consultant.
“I couldn’t be an assistant manager at Trader Joe’s. I don’t have the physical ability for that,” Lindsay said. “But I can travel and give speeches and go for walks. And I can try to change the world.”
Doctors are turning to him to help them identify and treat rare diseases like his own.
“I’m a full professor at Stanford, and I don’t know these answers,” said Dr. Lawrence Chu, who found himself leaning on Lindsay when a rare disease patient came to him. “Doug was the expert consultant.”
Lindsay has spoken at medical schools, including Stanford and Harvard, and at a growing list of medical conferences. And he’s working on a case study to be published in the British Medical Journal.
With his gift for solving intractable problems, he hopes to help steer other patients with hard-to-treat diseases on a path toward wholeness.
“I got help from people,” he said, “and now I have to help people.”

Car Insurance Cancelled due to not sending documentation...?
I recently had a car insurance policy cancelled due to not sending off my documentation (driving licence & counterpart) in time. So, I started to apply for a new quote, and it asked if I'd ever had a policy cancelled, I ticked yes, and in comparison to begin with the quote doubled. This was because of the cancelled policy. I assume they do this because people have policies cancelled due to non payments, however, obviously mine wasn't. Is there any way I can get around this because it wasnt actually cancelled because I didn't pay...?? Please help, as an 18 year old girl car insurance is expensive enough! Thanks""

Need affordable heath insurance in NJ?
I'm trying to find a health insurance plan for me and my fiance. I currently do not have health insurance but I am on Birth Control for cyst prevention and it runs 90$ a month. My fiance will be expunged from his parent's plan in October when we are married. I am a nanny and he is a personal trainer and tennis instructor, both jobs do not offer plans since he is not considered fulltime. I went to ehealthinsurance.com for a quote and the lowest is 375 with a steep deductible and limited coverage. We are also both fulltime college students so we are not able to pay much along with our other living expenses. Does anyone know of anyway of getting low cost insurance? I looked into family care etc, but unless I'm pregnant or have children, I wont be covered. I'm at a catch 22....we really want kids but not without being stable first...so either I pay for birth control or health insurance for prenatal and maternity (ha ha ha) I'm getting a bit frustrated here...Will definitely chose a best answer and thanks for reading this :)""

How much should I charge for tutoring?
I'm a senior in high school with over a 4.0 weighted average, and I'm thinking about doing some tutoring work for money, since no local businesses are hiring and I need to start paying car insurance soon, since I'll be driving. I'm wondering what to charge per session, and how long a session should last. I've figured out that I can tutor any subject for levels K-8, along with HS level Biology and Chemistry. Alternatively, for levels K-6, I'm willing to offer general homework help. I have some experience - I tutored someone who was failing two to four hours per week last year in HS Chemistry, and she ended up passing the course, including her NYS Regents Exam, which many people failed. From what I've seen, tutors around here make anywhere from $10 to $40, at my level of education. Is $10-15 unreasonable for a general homework help session? How does $20 sound for levels 7&8 math, or HS subjects? Is this too much? Too little? Could I make it work?""

His suggestion says that the only way i can borrow the car and cover all liability and contingencies is if he transfers (or 'sells') the car to my mom, so the car can be registered under MY parents name rather than his, so in the case of being sued, my parents would have to pay for the damages. what to do!?!? What are the upsides/downsides to a LPG/Autogas conversion.?
With auto gas being roughly 60% of the cost of petrol, investigating a conversation is attractive but not if it is just simply an exchange of costs and the whole deal just is a contra entry. Much lower mpg , increased service costs, insurance, more wear and tear are just some of my thoughts. Also how does auto gas effect performance ? Hence what are your experiences (in the UK please), costs, regrets and pleasures concerning the topic.""

BRAINCHILD
If you couldn’t give any money to your children, but you could give them a strategy for financial success, what would it be? My strategy would involve two simple steps.
1. Figure out where your money is going, and work out ways to reduce or remove expenses.
When I was a couple years into saving for a house. I sat down one day, bought up my bank statement online and just went through it. I looked at what I was spending my money on, and how much a fortnight I was using. I thought I had been so diligent, saving so well with my automatic payments coming straight from my pay into a separate savings account. I was on top of it, I was all over it, but what I noticed made me realise, no matter how on to it you think you are, you will miss things.
I had signed up to Netflix maybe a year prior, and never really used it. I had completely stopped using it at least a couple months prior. But I was still paying the monthly subscription fees. I had completely forgotten about it. Made me realise that if I (boarder line obsessed with my finances) can miss something like that, how many other people are missing similar expenses that they aren’t even using anymore.
After that happened, I made a point of every month, going through my bank statement and looking, just looking, where my money was going. I actually noticed another subscription come out a couple months later. I thought I’d cancelled it, I’m still rather sure I had cancelled it… It was a three monthly subscription fee that would have been easy to miss due to the infrequent payments. I removed that expense aswell which only took a couple of minutes. This one was my Xbox subscription. I wasn’t using it anymore because I’d made the change to PlayStation.
Together, between the Netflix and Xbox subscriptions, I was effectively giving away, flushing down the toilet, burning, or whatever analogy you want to use, about $240 a year. I don’t care who you are, wasting $240 is not a great feeling no matter how you try to justify it.
Once you have some idea of where your money is going, systematically come up with solutions to get rid of, or reduce them. One at a time.
My most recent expense removal involved my transport costs. I previously owned a car. I decided to sell it and bought a motorbike instead. I had worked out the fuel efficiency was much better using a motorcycle and therefore would reduce my transport costs. It has certainly been less comfortable, but has saved me a lot of money over the last couple of years.
Things have changed recently though, and with the continued increase in motorcyclist deaths, and therefore increase in government spending, the price of motorcycle registration has skyrocketed. The increase is mostly ACC levis and has made it no longer financially viable for a diligent saver like myself. Infact, the cost of using a car vs motorcycle is basically the same now, and in some cases, especially with new model vehicles, cars are actually cheaper.
One morning my boss was late to work. He sent the team an email saying his train had broken down. I didn’t realise he caught the train, why does he catch the train, he has a really flash V8 commodore?! When he got into work, I asked him about it. He told me that we can use public transport for free if we show our work ID. He said that because his car is a V8 he likes catching the train during peak hours when he will be sitting stationary in traffic for long periods of time. I had no idea. Why didn’t someone tell me about public transport being free for our company sooner!
I had never really used public transport before, I caught the bus occasionally in high school, and hadn’t been on a train much except while traveling overseas. But the idea of reducing my transport costs significantly made me decide that I was going to make the change. I did a trial week, where I tried not to use my motorbike at all. It took abit of figuring out to begin with, organising the schedules for the different train hops and staying at my brothers on the days the trains or buses don’t operate during my start or finished times because I do shift work. But it worked and it wasn’t overly stressful or difficult and is saving me a significant amount of money.
I was spending about $30 a week on petrol, and about $420 on annual motorcycle registration. Plus conservatively about $150 on a warrant of fitness and any maintenance per year. That works out to be $2130 a year. Once again not a fleeting amount. Just because you have reduced your expenses in one area, it doesn’t mean there aren’t better solutions, so remember to keep revisiting those areas and looking for better ways to improve on the changes you have already implemented.
Through the identification and elimination of unneeded expenses, true saving can begin and continue.
As another, not recommended example, I noticed another expense that was worth looking into for a possible reduction. This expense involved my health insurance plan. I don’t recommend anyone downgrade their health insurance, it could be a tragic mistake. There were a few reasons I decided to go ahead with it though. The first is that I am still young and have been fortunate enough to have never suffered from any illness or long term injury, I am a vegan, and am physically active. Statistically speaking, I am at very low risk of needing to use my health insurance, especially to the level I was insured at. I didn’t get rid of my health cover completely though, I just downgraded it, and I am still covered by ACC for any accidents or injuries. I changed from the comprehensive cover to the surgical plan with a voluntary $500 excess. Basically I have insured myself against the sorts of things that are going to cost five figures or more to treat, rather than getting subsidised doctors visits which I will never use, at least not until I am over 50 in any real frequent amount. And realistically I’ll probably be closer to 65-70 if I manage to remain vegan. Statically speaking vegans age healthily.
This small change is saving me $520 a year. I even stopped going to the hairdresser, and am using clippers on myself now instead. Which is saving me $20-$25 about every month. A total of about $240 a year. Add up the reduction of the few expenses I have covered, and that’s a total of over $3000 per year.
Analyse your expenses, and use problem solving to figure out better ways. Sometimes you have to use your imagination, or advice from others. Often when you have figured it out, it becomes so obvious in your own head, you wonder why you hadn’t thought of it before. It can be frustrating spotting these expenses sometimes and then looking back at how much money you have lost over time.
2. Set up automatic savings. Start off small, adapt and slowly increase the amount.
When I first started saving money for a house, every payday I enjoyed moving my money around and seeing how much I had left-over to put into my savings account. Sometimes it was impressive and a decent amount of money. Other times, especially if I had spent abit of money over the previous two weeks, it wasn’t quite as much. But it was enjoyable nonetheless and gave me motivation to spend less during the weeks leading up to the next payday.
I felt like I had a good system going, I was saving money, and a good amount too. That’s got to be a better system than most. But I was wrong, there was a better way which I learnt about 2 years in. I learnt about a concept called “pay yourself first” taught by a guy named David Bach, author of the successful book “the automatic millionaire”. He tells people to do the opposite to what I had been doing. Rather than paying your rent or your bills or whatever else first, pay into your savings first, and make it automatic. That way you will make do with what you have left.
The first automatic payment each fortnight I set up, which was coming straight out of my pay was $500. I started small because I wasn’t sure if the idea was going to work, and was worried I would go into overdraft or something similar when my phone fees were withdrawn or other bills. If I had money left over after paying for all those things, I still transferred it into my savings. But I noticed something beginning to happen over the next few months; I made do with what I had. Having $500 less in my bank account started to feel normal, and I got use to it. After a few months I increased the amount to $800 a fortnight. The first couple of pays felt a little uncomfortable, but eventually I got use to that amount too and it felt normal. I didn’t miss the $800 and even wondered why I needed it in the first place.
My automatic savings are now at $1000 a fortnight, and I feel like I have plenty of money for my expenses, food, and extra spending money. This single change in the way I was saving made all the difference. I adapted to the new amount of expendable income, and after not long it even became normal. Simple, but hugely effective.
I try to tell people that you don’t need to save huge amounts. You can literally start with $5 automatically coming out of your pay each fortnight. Get use to the concept, and having $5 less, and when you feel ready and comfortable increase it to $10. Hopefully a few years down the track you can increase it gradually to maybe $100 a fortnight. You will be amazed at the feeling of wondering how you even needed that money in the first place.
1. Figure out where your money is going, and work out strategies to reduce or remove expenses and,
2. Set up automatic savings. Start off small, adapt and slowly increase the amount.
That is the strategy I would pass on to my kids, and believe it would be even more valuable than if I could give them money. The saying “give a man a fish and feed him for a day, but teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime” comes to mind.
