i always expect my cousins to like strike me down where i stand and snub me when i have to bother them or when annoying stuff happens in the family but honestly they've been really nice and accommodating and we get along well even if we only keep it casual and struggle to talk about deeper stuff.... honestly i'm totally fine with that level, i think it works well for us in particular.... but i do feel like they do love and like me even at least a little and are willing to work with me which is more than i could ever expect.... it's been really nice being able to see them every once in a while again
#clyde.txt#growing up on like the poor black sheep side of the family PLUS!!!! going no contact with my mom making me the DOUBLE black sheep#makes me feel like i'm on thin ice.... but one of these two cousins was literally in the main friend group i was in in HS....#so they know me really well.... and i'm really fond of the other one too and we seem to get along just as well despite growing up a bit more#disconnected.... i'm just really thankful they put in effort for me and it feels so humiliating to have to ask for occasional supporr#<- i just had to ask to be picked up LOL luckily she said yes. it felt so embarrassing lol. but luckily it's a short drive from our houses#and an even shorter drive to where we go get brunch.... so i know it's not too much of a bother. it's just embarrassing to have mental#issues this bad that i can't walk somewhere alone LOL. but they're always very nice to me#even if maybe they are a little passively contemptuous.... at least they do help me#i just feel like such a burden lol

Trailer park Steve AU part 28
part 1 | part 27 | bonus stobin scene | ao3
cw: anxiety attack, graphic thoughts of death
Chapter 7
Steve's mom leaves the week before Thanksgiving.
No preamble, no notice, no "so long and thanks for paying rent," just— poof. Gone. Ta-ta, kiddo. Have a great life!
(Or don't!
Who cares?
Not me, that's for sure!)
The worst part is Steve finds out from Ernie of all people. Ma couldn’t even tell him to his face that she’s abandoning him to the gaping maw of this hellish town because she’s a good-for-nothing coward. Some day this place is gonna swallow him whole, splinter the bones and cough up the pellet, and Florence Harrington will be somewhere far, far away, sighing empty condolences over a fresh glass of red. “Just dreadful, isn’t it? Such a pity; what a shame.
Steve’s hanging towels on the clothes line the day after the party — after the ride to drop off Max and the hangover brunch with Robin; after drowning his headache in Tylenol and finally getting home, only to realize that he can’t shower yet because all the towels are soaking wet — when Ernie looks up from his yardwork and casually ruins his goddamn life.
“You're wastin' your time with that,” he says, propping his weight against a rake and squinting at Steve in the mid-afternoon sun.
“What?” Steve frowns; hangs another towel. It's not like they're going to dry themselves. "Why?"
"Too cold."
"It's not supposed to rain, though, is it?"
"No, but the humidity—"
Screw the humidity. "I'm sure it'll be fine."
Ernie shrugs. “Suit yourself.”
He turns his attention back to his yard, dragging the rake over a smattering of damp leaves; obsessed with keeping his little patch of lawn pristine; and Steve reaches into the hamper and sincerely hopes that Ernie’s wrong. He needs a shower, and if the towels don't dry fast enough they get that gross mildew smell to them, and then it gets in Steve's hair, and how is he supposed to flirt with Eddie if he smells like musty lake water?
"Where's your mom off to, anyway?" Ernie asks after a moment. "Saw her leave this morning with two big suitcases,” he explains when Steve throws him a questioning look. “Figured she was off somewhere nice.”
Steve blanches.
Two big suitcases?
He didn’t even notice that she wasn’t here. Feels like a stupid, selfish asshole now, because he’d called ‘ma, I’m home!’ when he got in earlier and had thought nothing of her complete lack of response, the peaceful silence of the house; had welcomed it at the time, even, and what if—
Oh, god, what if she’d died?
What if she’d been lying there dead in her room, and Steve didn’t bother to check because he was too busy thinking about himself and how nice it was not to hear reruns on the TV for once? How long would she have lain there, rotting and bloated, and— and how long would his dad have, if the gunshot hadn’t rung out? How long; how long? Bleeding out on the carpet gurgling fish sounds everything red and Steve can’t breathe—
“Did she—?” he pants. Brings a hand to his throat; tries again. “Did you- see who she left with?”
“Some woman. Relative of yours, maybe? I didn’t get a good look at her. Had a real fancy car, though. Mercedes, think it was.”
Steve chokes on his own spit. Feels his throat close up, his heart pound and his ears ring and the yellow-purple-black start creeping in like vines at the edge of his vision, like demogorgon claws; like death’s shark-toothed grin. Hungry, howling, happy as it takes a bite out of him.
“You alright?” Ernie asks.
Steve grinds his jaw so hard he feels something crack. "Excuse me," he grits out, stomping back into the house.
—
"Fuck!" Steve shouts to his empty house — to the sun-faded paneling, to the weird stain in the orange carpet. Fucking Cecelia; fucking hell.
He cleans the house in a rage, eyes hot with unshed tears, and there's a note on the breakfast table. Crisply folded on plain paper, prim cursive letters, almost comically estranged:
Steven,
Apologies for short notice. Gone to stay with Aunt Cece in Evanston. Call or visit if you like.
— Mom
P.S. Happy Thanksgiving
The words leave papercuts in his throat. Steve rips the note to tiny pieces, can hardly see for the tears swimming in his eyes, but he's not crying over this; he's not. He fucking refuses.
Somewhere along the way, the cleaning turns to blind destruction, demolition of the all the little scraps of life mom left behind: her creepy angel figurines, her vintage Pyrex dishes, an empty bottle of old perfume. Steve hurls them all against the living room wall, delights in the shimmering pile of broken glass at his bare feet. Wants to crawl over it on hands and knees. Wants to burn this place to the ground.
When the sun dips below the trees he goes back out to check the towels. The air is wet, bitterly cold; nips at his hands when the wind blows, and the towels hang heavy on the line, just as damp as before but now the slightest bit stiff with the first creep of frost.
"FUCK!" Steve roars, ripping a towel down off the line. Yanking each one down in turn, throwing them into the dirt, raging, "What! Is! The fucking! Point!"
His tears spill over then, hot and wet as he sinks to his knees with a wounded growl, and he chokes there in the dirt; the cold, wet mud, the patchy grass. Gravel digs into his shins, and sobs wrack his chest, capsize him like plunging waves, and he can't do anything but shake and cry where the whole neighborhood can see. Making a commotion; making a scene, as his mother would say, but his mother's not here. She fucking left. She left him here, and his dad did, too, and Steve is utterly, truly, hopelessly alone.
"Come on, son."
And there’s Wayne Munson, coaxing him up off the ground with a sure, strong grip. Steve makes animal sounds as Wayne lifts him under the arms — ruined hiccups, mangled wails. There's mud in his lungs. Ocean silt; sucking sludge.
His mother's gone.
"Easy now," Wayne shushes; hugs him hard against his side. "You're alright, kid. You're alright."

A Delicate Thing* (check-in)
Summary: Y/n wants to know what's going on with her father and Harry doesn't want her to worry about it. But there's a big piece of news she wants to reveal when her worries are finally quelled.
A/n: You guys begged for more of this one and I started this check-in a bit ago but never finished it (until today!). Hope you enjoy! This is a check-in for A Delicate Thing (mafia!harry). 3.8k words.
Warning: 18+ only, smut, talk of violence and murder, anxious feelings
♤♤♤♤
It took a while for Y/n to get comfortable with the idea that she was no longer under the thumb of her father, William, and was now the Boss’s girl. She was treated with respect everywhere she went, was pampered, cared for, and doted upon by Harry.
But as the months turned into a year, she began to understand how awful her life had been before Harry. Her father kept a close watch on her. Told her not to eat too much, to wear certain clothes, to become acquainted with important topics but to act as if she didn’t understand, and worst of all was the way he enjoyed showing her off to his associates. She hated William.
“What are you thinking about,” Harry pulled her into his lap one morning as he sat at the kitchen table and drank his tea.
“I was just… it’s stupid. It’s in the past.”
“It’s not stupid. Don’t say that. Tell me what’s on your mind.”
She put her hands up to the lapel of his suit and sighed before beginning, “Thinking about William. How much I hate him. For everything he did to me. And now he’s bragging about how his daughter is the Boss’s girl… as if he had anything to do with it.”
Harry hummed and had his palm spread out over her thigh, the silk material of her nighty smooth under his hand, “Is he now? I think it’s time for me to give him a lesson once and for all. But only if you want me to. I don’t want to do anything that will have you upset.”
“What will you do?”
“Hmm…” Harry pursed his lips to the side for a moment, “What would you like? Demotion? Public reprimand?”
Shaking her head she kept her eyes on her lover, “Something worse.”
Nodding his head he spoke again, “Have someone break his arms? Cut him off from the family?”
“Maybe that. Cutting him off. I think that would be the worst for him. And I wouldn’t need to see him again.”
“Your wish is my command, my love.”
♤♤♤♤
Harry didn’t like to spend time away from his girl. Before she came along he’d take trips for work and never think a second thought about being away from some chick he might have been seeing. But with Y/n, she was his everything. So he started having her come with him if the trip wasn’t going to be too dangerous. Even if it was only for one night. He didn’t like not having her in his bed at the end of a long day.
And now he was currently away for work and had brought Y/n along with him. They traveled with his underboss, Brad, to visit an associate to come to some kind of agreement. Y/n wasn’t sure of the details, she just knew she’d be staying at the large mansion during the day with security outside while Harry, his underboss, and the associate were meeting somewhere unknown.
Harry was generally a busy man. He came home late sometimes but he always came home and he always called her when he was on his way back to her.
It was nearly 9 pm and she was freshly bathed and wrapped in a thick robe as she watched TV from the bed. Her phone rang with the tone she set for Harry and she leaned over to pluck it up, “Hi,” she smiled widely.
“Hi, baby. I’m on my way back, okay? How was your day?”
“Oh it was good,” she plopped back down into the pile of pillows behind her and sighed, “George’s chef made me a really big brunch and I swam in the pool for a while.”
“Good girl. Sounds nice. Can’t wait to see you, baby.”
Harry was the most attentive and loving man she’d ever met. There wasn’t a day that had gone by since he took her away from William, that she didn’t feel his love for her. And she loved returning that love to him just the same.
When he finally returned to George’s mansion and entered their bedroom, half expecting her to be at the front door when he pulled up, he understood why. She was lying on the bed, naked, her legs open and facing the door (on purpose he supposed). He swiftly closed the door behind him as she grinned at him, “Hi, Harry.”
Harry slid his jacket off and draped it at the foot of the bed and climbed in between her legs, hooking the underside of her knees over his shoulders, “Hi, baby,” he spoke in a whisper before he kissed the inside of her thighs and then got to work right away.
He’d woken her up much in the same way, lapping at her slowly until she was shaking and gasping as quietly as possible, not wanting to let anyone else hear what they were doing.
And just like the morning, she was quickly brought to her end with her palm covering her mouth and her other hand grasping the blankets below.
When he let go of her legs and her body melted into the bed below she lulled her head to the side to watch Harry as he pulled his pants and his briefs off and climbed over her frame. She realized what he was doing immediately so she opened her mouth wide for him, sticking her tongue out before he stuffed his cock into her mouth and pressed down into her throat, her soft lips wrapped around him and she coughed around his tip.
Harry grasped the back of her head up from the pillow underneath and rolled his hips down into her. He’d gotten her used to taking him like this. She was always eager to please him, though, so it didn’t take much work. Soon, she was a natural at opening up her throat and letting him fuck her mouth until she was drooling and gagging happily.
“Baby, fuck… Needed this all day.”
And he really had needed it. He left her in the morning without having had anything in return because he didn’t have time. She was always his priority. He always made sure she got off first, even if that meant he didn’t have time to also get off.
But now they had time. They could sleep in the next day and he could fuck her brains out, almost literally in that moment, with his cock filling her mouth and inching its way into her throat.
When she signaled she needed a breath he pulled out and brushed the hair from her face. She gasped and drew breaths into her lungs for a moment before opening her mouth up and lifting her head to find his cock again.
“Hold on, love… needy girl,” he chuckled as he moved off of her. He was ready to make love to her, feel her warm pussy, and make her come once more with him. Fill her with his come.
He preferred coming inside of her pussy lately. Harry wanted to get his girl pregnant. Wanted to knock her up and really have a claim on her. She was already his, but he dreamed of having her carrying his babies. A good handful of them. And when he brought it up to her a few months ago, she agreed she’d like that too. She wanted to give him as many babies as he wanted.
Harry laid on his back and pulled Y/n over him, “Want to see you fucking yourself on my cock and coming again.”
She loved doing this. When Harry would lie flat on the bed and she’d climb over him, his big cock reaching deep and spreading her apart, her knees down as she leaned back and put her hands over his thighs, sliding over him, giving him a good view of the way she liked to fuck herself on him. Then he’d thumb at her clit and she’d tip over the edge.
She positioned herself over him and lowered onto his dick, her hands on his pecs at first. Harry put his hands behind his head as he watched Y/n work herself down over him. Small, muted moans fell from her lips and Harry groaned at the way she felt around him.
When she’d taken him in and she was seated over him she hissed at how deep he was. It always ached so nicely, “Your tip is pushing into my womb. I can feel it. You’re going to get me pregnant, Harry,” she spoke as she leaned back, putting her palms over his well-muscled thighs and began rolling her hips, her labia parting and spread as his wide cock was stuffed into her.
Harry’s mouth dropped open at the sight and her words. She was filthy sometimes without even trying, “Fuck. You want my come deep inside your womb?” He spoke through gritted teeth, the way she was moving over him felt too good, “Gonna milk my cock of everything I have and get yourself pregnant, baby? Let’s see it. Let me see how you fuck my cock and make me come inside of you, greedy girl.”
She nodded and whined as she continued her work, slipping up and down his long prick, her arousal making a mess of him. Soon, she planted her feet flat onto the bed and began to really move over him, lifting upward and coming down with a wet smack each time.
Harry was panting and grunting, gently shifting his own hips upward out of instinct. He couldn’t help but to respond to her creamy pussy as she squeezed and moved over him.
“Oh god… Harry, please!” She gasped louder than she wanted. Her little plea was something he’d gotten used to during their year together. It meant she wanted to come but needed help.
So Harry swiftly moved his hands from behind his head and sat upward enough that he could reach to rub her clit and give it the kind of pressure she required.
“That’s it, baby. Take what you need. Use my cock, baby.” Harry’s words were tight and breathy as he spoke in between pants.
“I want your come so bad. Want to make you a daddy.”
Harry nearly burst at that moment but he groaned and closed his eyes as he sped up his fingers at her clit. She was nearly there. Just a few more minutes.
When her thighs began to shake and her moans grew louder and her words were incoherent curses and babbles of nonsense he knew she was feeling or orgasm bubble up and begin to spread.
Yes, fuck, yes! Come on baby,” he moaned as he watched her face contort as her jaw dropped and she threw her head back suddenly, a loud call of his name followed by unhindered moans as she came. Her pussy pulsed around him as she got herself off with his cock. Harry groaned and released into her, bucking his hips up to push himself into the hilt and to get as close to her deepest spots inside as possible making her tits softly bounce.
“Fuck, baby!” He growled lowly as his come filled her up, his throbbing dick being squeezed and fucked as he came.
When Harry opened his eyes she was lying over his chest, small puffs of breath coming out as she recovered. Harry rubbed his palms over her back and kissed her forehead, “Love you, sweet girl.”
♤♤♤♤
Now, one of the reasons for Harry going to his associate's home 8 hours away from where they lived was to also discuss the fate of William. Harry had told Y/n he could just cut him off. And he could. That decision was Harry’s. But cutting someone off and ex-communicating them from the family was more difficult than just killing them. There were a few reasons for that but in the end, Harry wanted to make his girl happy. So he needed some advice from his associate who happened to be well acquainted with William from work dealings.
Breakfast was served the in mansion’s large dining room with tall windows and gaudy curtains hung. Everyone was at the table. Harry and his girl, his underboss Brad, the associate George, and his wife Blanca.
And Y/n didn’t know the details of what was going on. Nor did she know the status of her father. Harry kept her in the dark from most of their dealings on purpose. So when she heard her father’s name mentioned her ears perked up and she looked at Harry, who she was sitting on at that moment. He insisted she sit in his lap, which was not out of the ordinary. Most of Harry’s work partners and friends had gotten used to seeing the girl in his lap almost all the time.
“So he’s been a problem lately?” George spoke.
“He’s been a problem for a long time. We’d like to have him cut off from the family but we don’t know if he’s involved in anything else. And since you work with him regularly I thought I’d see if you had heard of anything else he might have his hands in. Money owed, things like that.”
Brad spoke next, “I told the boss we should just make him go away for good but the girl here is William’s daughter.”
George nodded, “I see. That makes this a difficult thing to say then, because I don’t see any way to cut him off with how many people would be after him. If you push him out and send him away without the protection of the family, he’ll be killed either way. But not before probably spilling details about your organization. And mine. He’ll be tortured and he’ll talk. It could compromise a lot of our operations.”
Y/n stayed quiet as she listened to the men talk about her father. She hadn’t realized this was a possibility. That William would need to be killed. It was one thing to have him cut off and she’d never hear from or see him again. But to know that he might be killed? Dead?
“Yes. That is my concern. I’d like a list of all of the relationships and affairs he’s got going on with your organization and then we’ll put something together on our end and make a decision about this,” he squeezed Y/n’s hip to let her know he was still keeping her wishes in mind.
On the road back home, Y/n finally voiced her concern about her father, “So we can’t cut him off or send him away, because that risks everything. But if he stays on in the organization… is there any other option?”
Harry wound their fingers together and pulled her hand up to his mouth and kissed her knuckles, “You mean other than killing him? Sure. But I don’t think you’ll like any of the other options.”
“Tell me.”
“Well, he could just continue working and making money for us. I could keep him away from you but he will be around. Another thing that could work would be to frame him and send him to prison for good. He’d be protected in prison but you’d never have to see him again.”
“But won’t he talk to the police? Tell them he’d been set up?”
“Not if I make it look like a sacrifice of honor. Tell him I’ll raise his title and thus his respect in the organization. He won’t roll on us if he knows he’ll be doing it for the family and that he’ll be earning the respect of everyone.”
“But what would you frame him for? What would put him away in prison forever?”
“Murder.”
♤♤♤♤
Y/n understood that sometimes things in the organization could be violent. People died, went to jail, wound up in hospitals… But to think about her father being framed for a murder he didn’t commit? Could she come to terms with that? Who would have to die? Who would kill the person? She asked all these questions but, as usual, Harry told her not to worry.
But she was worried. And not just about William. She’d gotten news of something else that morning that shocked her. It shouldn’t have but it did. Unfortunately, the lingering questions she had about her father overshadowed everything else that was on her mind.
She hated William. That was true. But she didn’t want him dead. She also didn’t want Harry to get into trouble for anything. And when it came down to it, when she thought about all the outcomes, the worst were always the ones that had Harry in prison and away from her or dead. She actually preferred her dad dead than to have Harry go to prison.
Even though it had been weeks since Harry had met with George, she still hadn’t gotten word about what was going to become of William and she felt anxious. She hated not knowing. She trusted Harry but she needed to know what the plan was. She wanted Harry to tell her everything. It was for a reason that he kept her in the dark about things, but this was personal for her. This specific thing was about her father.
When Harry came home that evening their routine looked much like it normally did. Y/n climbed into his lap and kissed him and he held her and decompressed for a bit before he was ready to finally eat. She heated his food and poured him a glass of wine and they sat together at the dining table and she told him about her day.
But underneath what felt very normal to Harry, Y/n was getting up the nerve to insist he tell her the plan regarding William.
When she put his plate into the dishwasher and refilled her own glass of wine she joined him on the couch and curled into his side and sighed.
Looking up at him she realized there was nothing to worry about. Harry had never been mean to her or made her feel bad for asking questions. He’d either tell her or he wouldn’t. She only hoped she was able to argue her point and make him understand that this was something she deserved to know.
“What’s going on with William? Have you decided anything?”
Harry continued softly rubbing his hand over her hip and her side as he spoke, “I don’t want you to worry about it, love. Okay? Everything is going to be taken care of.”
She knew he’d answer that way. But she was prepared.
“I trust you, Harry. I really do. But this is my father. And this is personal to me. And you tell me not to worry but I do and I can’t help but to worry.”
Harry turned to look at his girl and nodded in thought. He knew it was personal to her. And normally when he told her not to worry about something she’d drop it. But the fact that she was doubling down on this made him pause. He still didn’t want her to know. He wanted to protect her from the awful truth.
“My sweet girl. I know this is personal. But what good will it do for you to know how we’ll go about this? You know our options here and none of them are very nice. I don’t want you to be upset thinking about it and dwelling on it.”
Y/n turned herself to face Harry squarely, “I’m already dwelling on it. I need to know. I deserve to know. I wouldn’t ask you and insist on something that doesn’t somehow involve me. But this does. I need to know.”
Harry smiled and took a deep breath, bringing his hands up to her face, and gently drew her in for a small kiss before he sat back into the couch and cleared his throat, “One of George’s men was involved in something that got him brutally killed. Right now we’ve made it look like William was the murderer. It’s only a matter of time before the police investigate him and find him guilty. And as you may know, your father has been arrested for battery and assault multiple times in the past and so a murder charge wouldn’t surprise anyone looking to find the perpetrator. He will go to prison for a very long time because the murder was quite savage. If the police think William did that, they won’t want him released.”
Y/n nodded and bit her lip before speaking up, “And like you said at George’s, he’ll think he’s doing a favor to the family? He won’t talk?”
“Exactly. We’ll make sure of it. We’ll supply him with plenty of my money on his account for commissary, and bartering. And he’ll have a nice cell by himself. He’ll be treated well but we’ll never have to worry about him again.”
She let out a breath of relief. It was ideal if it worked, “And you’re sure this will work out?”
Harry let out a small laugh and pulled at her, bringing her to his lap, his favorite way of sitting with her, “Baby, it’ll work. If you don’t think we have a cop on our payroll to make sure of it then you must not realize the kind of power I have.”
Y/n smiled and put her arms over his shoulders, “I know how powerful you are. And I am so happy I’m here with you,” she brought her arms down and took Harry’s hands in hers, moving his palms to cover her low tummy, “So happy for everything that’s to come.”
Harry stitched his brows together as he took in her words and her gesture, looking from where she placed his hands to her face, “Are you… is this?”
She nodded quickly, “We’re gonna have a baby.”
He was stunned into silence. He hadn’t expected it. Sure they’d been a little loose with him coming in her during her fertile days, and he knew they were both in their prime and fully fertile so it shouldn’t have been such a surprise. This was what they had wanted.
“You… when did you find out?” Harry cupped her tummy with more intention now, his eyes wide.
“This morning.”
He let out a small breath and grinned from ear to ear, his dimples carving into his cheeks, and pushed Y/n off of his lap and down to the couch as he lifted her dress upward so he could look at her tummy, placing small kisses all around her skin and over her belly button. Y/n squeaked in laughter at the way his curls brushed her soft flesh as he drew his lips over her tummy slowly. She put her hands into his hair and sighed, “I love you, Harry.”
Harry nodded and continued dragging his mouth downward until he lowered her panties and looked up at her from between her legs, “I love you too, baby. Now let’s celebrate.”

My Little Love
Girl's Weekend
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Enhanced!Reader
Word count:2.4k
Warning: drinking, guns, fighting, bombing, Just women kicking ass, idk what else....
A/N: I wanted to write something that was Nat, Wanda and Sugar just for fun. This is mostly to show their friendship and it's a pre-Bucky x Sugar one shot. This takes place before the main series!
Series Masterlist
It was a rare moment in the compound. Usually there were always a few team members hanging around somewhere, especially on a Thursday night. But as luck would have it you were the only person from the main team to be in. You’d been on your own small mission and came back to find everyone else was out on missions as well. A weekend to yourself sounded nice. You’d been hanging out in your apartment when the door opened to reveal Nat in pajamas. She promptly sat on the couch next to you, taking the wine glass you’d been holding and taking a sip. You grabbed another glass and poured yourself more. The two of you watched tv and talked. A few hours later Wanda shows up and takes her place in an armchair.
For the next few hours the three of you joked, gossiped, did some face masks and drank more wine than you should have. Friday informs you that the rest of the team will be out for the next few days. Nat’s eyes light up when she hears that. No boys for three days, it was wonderful.
“This is the first time that the three of us have been together without the boys around.” Wanda says.
“We hang out, just us, all the time.”
“Yeah but the boys are always around and they end up crashing our plans.”
“Especially Bucky,” Nat teases and wiggles her eyebrows. “I wonder why?”
“We are just friends.” You reply, you can’t help but smile. It was no secret between the three of you that you liked Bucky.
“Anyways, we should take advantage and have a full girls only weekend. We start tomorrow with a spa day.”
“Then we go shopping on Saturday.” Wanda adds.
Nat and Wanda look at you, waiting to see what you would suggest.
“We could get drinks at that bar Sam mentioned.”
“Yes.” Wanda exclaims with a big smile.
“We could do brunch on Sunday and then go get our nails done.”
“That sounds like a great plan.” You grab the wine bottle. “But for tonight we finish this off and have a sleepover.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ringing was pulling you from sleep. Then there was your name being called until you finally opened your eyes. It took a second to orient yourself. You were still in the living room. Wanda had her head on your lap and her legs over the arm rest while Nat rested her head on your shoulder. Her arm was wrapped around your midsection and she even cuddled closer.
“Agent Y/L/N, there is an urgent call from director Fury.”
“Put him through, thank you.” You tell Friday.
“Finally.” You hear Fury’s annoyance.
“Sorry Fury. What’s going on?”
“Are Romanoff and Maximoff with you?” He asks.
“Yes sir.” You nudge both women until they start to stir.
“There is a terrorist group we’ve been tracking for a while now. Intel suggests they are making a move at the U.N. Summit that's being held this weekend in Brazil and you need to leave within the next hour in order to stop them. I’ll send the rest of the information to you so that you can go over it on the jet.”
Both women were up and alert although the three of you were slightly hungover. They started getting up once Fury hung up.
“Meet at the jet in 30.” Nat says.
“But my head is killing me.” Wanda complains.
“Don’t worry I’ll bring the hangover cure for us. Just go get ready.”
“So much for a girl’s weekend.”
“Maybe next time, ladies. See you on the jet.” Nat mutters and walks out followed by Wanda.
You rush to your room to put a go bag together quickly. Then you go to one of your spare rooms where you keep your tactical suit, well stocked first aid kits and weapons. After grabbing what you needed you put on your suit and headed to the jet.
****
You were second on the jet. Nat was already in the pilot’s seat, the lights of the screens lighting her face. It was still the middle of the night so hopefully you made it to your destination with enough time. Wanda shows up a few minutes after you do.
“Ok, before we take off I have to give you each the hangover shot. We have to be clear headed on this mission.” You say while looking through your medical kit.
“Please do.” Wanda sticks out her arm while her eyes are still closed. “I also brought coffee.”
“You’re a lifesaver.”
“How did you even come up with this?” Nat asked as she rolled up her sleeve.
“I made a joke about it to Bruce but he took it seriously. We worked on it for weeks.” You give a little shrug. “It works great so you won’t hear me complaining.”
Once you were done Nat went back to the pilot’s chair while you and Wanda strapped in for take off. After the jet was airborne and headed in the right direction Nat joined you at one of the computer stations. You’re typing away before the information Fury had sent pops up over the conference table toward the center of the jet. You both join Wanda and go over everything. The plan has basically been laid out for you by the agent that’s been keeping tabs on the group. Nat makes some changes and adds back up plans of course. Wanda adds her input and you offer your point of view. The three of you work well together. You all have different sets of skills that complement each other and cover the gaps. Naturally Nat takes the lead which is fine by you since she has more experience than you and Wanda put together. By the time you get to Brazil you’re confident everything will work out fine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Smoke and debris settled around you. There was a ringing in your ear from the bomb that had gone off. As you coughed you searched the area for the person that had dropped the bag with the bomb.
“Y/N? Answer me.” Wanda sounded desperate as she called your name and then Nat over comms.
“I’m here.” You coughed. “Suspect is on the move.”
“Don’t go after him.”
“I have to, he has another explosive in his possession.” You say between coughing.
“Wanda head north, I’ll meet Y/N.”
You start to run, yelling at the civilians in your way to get out. There was debris all over the lobby of the building you were at but you were a few steps away from the door. Outside Nat’s motorcycle revved and you quickened your step. She was literally right in front of the doors. You didn’t waste any time and hopped on behind her. The motorcycle bounced as Nat drove down the stairs. She swerved through the traffic jam while you communicated with Wanda.
The three of you met up again at a government office building. People were screaming and running out. Some of them had some type of purple dust on their clothes and skin. It was very obviously causing them pain.
“There on the second floor.” Nat pointed up to a row of windows where your targets were walking by.
“If I can get up there I can distract them while you get everyone out. Then we meet and finish this.” You said, looking over at both redheads. They nod in approval. “Ok Wanda, can you get me up there?”
Red magic pulses around her hands and in her eyes. “Of course I can.”
You reach into one of the pockets of your suit and grab a small respirator to place over your face. It automatically activates and covers your nose and mouth. You extend your hand out and pull the door of a car that had crashed nearby. The metal bends at your will until you form it into small orbs.
“Ready?” Wanda asks.
You nod and watch as red magic swirls and lifts you. As you fly toward the window the metal orbs you made shoot forward and break the glass. You land on your feet and immediately start to fight against the group of people causing havoc. Plumes of purple smoke hang heavy in the air. It makes your eyes sting but you push forward.
The metal from the bangles you always wore and the metal from the car door bend to your will. One moment metal is draped over your chest as bullets are shot your way and the next moment little pellets are flying through the air to hit their target.
The harder you fought the more it seemed like people kept coming at you. Still you kept forward, deep into the belly of the building until you got to the center. The atrium of the building had seen better days. Where once was a large sculpture at the center there was now rubble and dust. The stairs that connected the ground floor with the rest of the building had taken a hit, leaving gaps in the stairs. The decorative plants and benches were all destroyed. People were hiding behind whatever they could as the group of terrorists waved around guns and even took a few shots.
On the ground floor, Nat and Wanda were fighting back and trying to help anyone they could. You sent small metal orbs that hovered around you to shield a small group of bystanders from bullets. The action caused the attention to be moved to you. You duck behind the concrete railing as they start to shoot.
“Keep them distracted.” Nat said as she started to form a plan. “If you can get them all on the stairs we can take them out in one fell swoop.”
“I can do that but I’ll need help, Wanda can you get on the stairs behind them?”
“Just say when.” Wanda answers.
You peep over the railing just enough to see below again. The huge sculpture that laid on its side was made up of glass, wood and metal rods. You could work with that but first you concentrate on the guns the group you’re fighting has. The muzzle of the guns closes so that they can’t be used.
“Their guns are useless now. It should give you an advantage.” You say through comms. “Wanda, I want you on those stairs in two minutes. Keep them in place. Nat, get everyone you can out.”
They both confirm and you count down before popping up and running towards the top of the stairs. Some of them try to fire but their guns malfunction and just explode in their hands. Just as that happens Wanda takes her position, distracting the group while you begin to move the metal rods, bending and shaping them to your will until you manage to capture every single person that was part of the terrorist group.
When everything was said and done, you, Nat and Wanda managed to save a lot more people that were hiding within the building. The group that had tried to sabotage the Summit was stopped just in time. With your part of the work done you headed back to the jet.
“You know if we hurry we can still do some of the things we planned.” Wanda says as she buckled herself in.
“And if we do our mission report now we can technically take Monday off.”
“Well what are we waiting for ladies? Let’s get the rest of this girl’s weekend started.” You say as you grab your Avenger designated laptop and start typing away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were laughing at something Wanda said as you made your way to the large living room. As you sat down the men all walked in looking battered, bruised and tired. They dragged their feet and collapsed on the first seat they could. The last person to enter the room was Bucky. He scanned the room until he saw you and the tiredness he had disappeared. You involuntarily smiled when you made eye contact. Bucky made his way toward the empty seat next to you.
“Hey.” You greet him when he plops down next to you.
“Hey, how was your weekend?”
“Nothing special,” you look over at Wanda and Nat who had joined the group. “Just stopped a terrorist group down in Brazil. No biggie.”
Bucky’s eyebrows shoot upwards in surprise, even Steve who had been talking with Clint and Sam about their own mission stops mid sentence and looks your way. Nat starts talking about the mission with you and Wanda jumping in and adding details.
“You should’ve seen Y/N, she took this huge sculpture and used the metal pieces to detain about ten guys. It was very impressive.” Nat says, ending the story.
“Please, I couldn’t have done it without you or Wanda.”
The guys complimented the three of you on your team work. When you look at Bucky he has a soft smile and pride in his eyes directed your way.
“What?” You ask him.
“Nothing. You just always say you’re afraid to use your abilities but you did good. You saved people.” Bucky smiles again. “You should be proud.”
You dip your chin to hide how flustered you feel.
“Anyway, it was good to see you boys but we are just heading out.”
“Where are you going?” Sam sits up and starts to put on his best pouty face in hopes of getting invited.
“Sorry Sammy but it’s a girls weekend.” Wanda informs them and grabs your hand to pull you up with her. “Don’t wait up.”
You start laughing when all of them begin to explain why inviting them would be better. As you head out you look over your shoulder at Bucky who looks like a lost puppy, already missing your presence. Wanda pulls you along though. Nat stays behind and watches you before turning to Bucky. She rolls her eyes and sighs when Bucky gets up and starts walking out of the room. Just as he’s about to walk past her, she speaks up.
“Fine you guys can come. We’ll still go ahead and get enough tables.” She announces and turns to Bucky. “I’ll even make sure you get the seat next to Y/N. But you should make a move soon Barnes. She isn’t going to wait forever.”
Bucky watches her walk away and smiles. All he wanted to do since leaving for this last mission was to come back and see you. Now he’d at least get to hang out with you. He didn’t care that your girl’s weekend was ruined.
Chapter 43.8
“Marten! You’re here!”
Marten barely manages to drop his bag on the floor before I wrap him in a tight hug. He surprises me by not only hugging me back with the same enthusiasm, but lifting me and swinging me around.
“Hey Jules! What a lovely welcome, I’m sorry I’m so sweaty.”
“It’s fine, I can’t possibly get any worse than I already am. This heatwave is crazy.”
He laughs and gives me another squeeze as he sets me down, our cheeks briefly sticking together.
“Yeah, it’s bad, the train was like a sauna. I might ask to borrow your shower later if that’s okay, I don’t want to sweat all over your sofa. That would be a very poor way to thank you.”
“Sure, make yourself at home. I found a bunch of blankets and stuff, but we can figure out sleeping arrangements when you get back tonight.”
“You’re still sure you don’t want to come to GeekCon with me, right? I feel a little bad just leaving you here and using your place like a hotel.”
He sends me a crooked smile as we stand in the middle of the living room. It’s odd to be occupying the same physical space after only speaking online for an entire year. I know him so well, but now that he’s here, he somehow feels both strange and familiar at the same time.
“No, it’s fine. I really don’t want to go. We can hang out tonight, play some games, maybe even have brunch tomorrow before you go back?”
“It’s because Paul is going to be there, isn’t it?”
I bite my lip.
“No, not just because of Paul, I didn’t finish my costume either… but I also don’t want to see him, you know? I’m still kind of mad at him.”
“No, I get it, I didn’t go to my last four lectures in Quantum Computing Theory because my ex was in that class too and it ended pretty badly. But if you’re not going, I have a proposal for you. How about I skip GeekCon as well, and we go somewhere together?”
“What? But GeekCon is the whole reason you’re here!”
“I go every year, it’s fine. Come on, Jules, what kind of friend would I be if I just left you here to melt all by yourself? We could go somewhere fun, isn’t there an aquarium over in San Sequoia? We can be there in half an hour. It has to be cooler than here, too.”
An aquarium. Just the word itself feels refreshing, conjuring up images of deep, cool water. It’s been so hot lately that I’ve almost considered jumping into the harbour, but I’ve seen enough drunk guys peeing in it when I walk home at night that I never would.
“That sounds great, actually, but are you sure?”
“Hmm, you’re right, let me really weigh my options here. On one hand, I could go to GeekCon, where I’ve been seven years in a row, to hang out with other sweaty geeks in a giant glass cube while my dear friend that I am callously exploiting for room and board is suffering in the heat all by herself – or I could go to a nice, air-conditioned aquarium and catch up with someone I haven’t seen for a year. It’s a tough decision, I’ll give you that.”
“Fine, you’ve made your point, Marten, let’s just go!” I can’t stop giggling and he carries on.
“No no, let me think just a little bit longer. I could also go and follow Paul around and glare angrily at him on your behalf, I guess that’s a point in GeekCon’s favour.”
The mental image is absurd. Paul knows perfectly well who Marten is, and I realise that I don’t want them to meet again, preferably ever. What if they talked? Would Marten actually confront Paul about hurting me? Or would Paul ask him how I was doing? I’m still angry with Paul for how abruptly he ended things, something about it feels unresolved and will probably never quite make sense to me, but I’m nowhere near as furious with him as Miranda, Samara and Marten seem to be on my behalf. I want to hate him, it would be easier, but I simply can’t.
“Please don’t do that, it would just make it seem like I still care about him. I guess that means I’ll have to graciously allow you to hang out with me instead, then.”
“Thank you, you’re too kind.” Marten rolls his eyes. “Honestly, Jules, I do hope you’ll have slightly higher standards for your next boyfriend. Let’s go before it gets any hotter.”
The sun is still rising in the sky as we emerge from the station, promising that the day will indeed only get hotter. The blue metal siding on the San Sequoia Aquarium glitters deep blue like the heart of a glacier, promising relief.
“How did you even know about this place? I’ve lived in San Myshuno for over a year and I had no idea there was an aquarium this close.”
Marten shrugs.
“I think I heard about it at some point, figured it’d be fun to go if I was ever here for something other than GeekCon. I just never had a reason until now.”
Coming in from the bright sun almost blinds me at first, before my eyes slowly adjust to the dim light. Marten pays for our tickets using cash. I can’t remember the last time I even carried cash, but I know that Marten’s parents keep an eye on his bank account. They seem to believe that going to GeekCon and playing video games is a waste of his time, and he doesn’t want them to ask too many questions. I think they worry too much, Marten is perfectly able to ace all his classes while playing games, he’s legitimately some sort of genius.
The aquarium is even chillier than I hoped for, and now I almost wish I was wearing something with longer sleeves, but the bright colours and beautiful fish soon distract me from the goosebumps on my arms. A lot of kids are running around, their excited voices echoing between the tanks.
I take a few pictures for my socials, I need to get back in the habit if I want to build my following back up, even though I don’t know exactly what direction to go in yet. But some more consistent activity can’t hurt either way.
Marten gently nudges me with an elbow. “Typical influencer behaviour, can’t just look at the fish without documenting everything.”
“Hey nerd brain, it’s technically my job. Shut up and help me instead! And please try to look like you’ve taken a selfie before.”
“I haven’t, actually, I hear cameras steal your soul. Begone, witch!”
I elbow him in the ribs and he obediently positions himself behind me, his hands barely touching my shoulders. I look at the picture I’ve taken.
“Good job on the hover hands, am I still that sweaty? I’ve already hugged you, it’s too late to pretend we’re not both super gross.”
“Hover hands? I’ll give you hover hands!” He tickles me and I squirm, almost dropping the phone. “This is the thanks I get for not manhandling you like some sort of creep? So ungrateful, no more selfies for you, young lady!”
He starts walking away, but I quickly catch up and leap onto his back, taking a few more pictures while he laughs and holds on to my knees so I don’t fall off.
Marten shakes his head, still chuckling, as I awkwardly stuff the large phone into a pocket while hanging on for dear life with the other hand.
“You’re impossible, Jules.”
“I think you mean improbable. I’m clearly possible, I’m literally right behind you.”
“Smartass.”
He carries me all the way along the giant tropical tank, but I jump down when we get to a darker area towards the back. There are two smaller tanks here, one decorated to look like an ancient temple, the other containing a statue of a turtle. The wall is covered with colourful and intricate wood carvings.
I head towards a display that features a stunning necklace carved out of some kind of green stone. “This is beautiful. I love Sulani so much.”
“Have you ever been there?”
“A few times. We used to go on holiday to the Valley every other year, but now I only have my grandparents in Brindleton Bay left, so we either go there or travel to Sulani or Mt. Komorebi. My mom loves snowboarding, but my dad gets super anxious, especially after one of my brothers chipped a tooth. My parents go to Sulani by themselves every year though, it’s like an anniversary thing.”
“What, they just go on vacation without you and your siblings?”
“Yeah, it’s like a romantic retreat. I told you they got divorced once, right? Before I was born? So now they do a lot of things to keep their marriage healthy.”
“I mean, if it works, it works. My parents wouldn’t dream of letting me stay home when they travel. And we always go places they think will be, I don’t know, educational? We’ve been to some really interesting places, like Tomarang and Selvadorada, but we always end up spending most of the time in museums or on guided tours to heritage sites and such. Sometimes it would be nice to just hang out and have fun. Oh, and then we also go to Windenburg to see my mom’s side of the family once or twice a year.”
“One of my sisters lives in Windenburg now. I really want to go visit her when I can afford it.”
“Let me know if you ever go, I’ll teach you a few useful phrases.”
“Admit it, you’re just going to teach me rude stuff.”
“Honestly, yeah, probably. My mother would be so disappointed in me.”
The final part of the aquarium has various insects and butterflies, as well as some frogs and turtles. Marten stops in front of a terrarium and I eye it warily, but I can’t really see any bugs in it, just a few large twigs.
At first I’m not even sure what I’m looking for, but then one of the twigs moves, and I squeal and hide behind Marten. He shakes his head at me.
“Honestly, Jules, can’t take you anywhere. You’re scaring the poor stick insects!”
“Hey, bugs are already not my favourite thing, and this one pulled a jump scare! Why do they have insects here anyway, it’s an aquarium?”
“I guess they’re… branching out? Sorry, that was extremely terrible even for me.”
I shake my head, giggling.
“I hope robotics works out for you, because a comedy career certainly won’t.”
“Oof, she’s harsh but fair. I’m feeling pretty done in here, want to get some lunch before we leave?”
“Let me guess, you’re going to insist on paying for that too?”
“Obviously. You know me so well.”
We get coffee and bagels and sit on the picnic tables outside the small café. Next to us, a couple tries to console their toddler who is seemingly distraught that she can’t take any of the pretty fish home. I feel her pain.
“For the second year in a row, thanks for buying me coffee during GeekCon.”
Marten grins. “I was raised like that. I hope it’s okay? I don’t mean to impose, it’s just that I know you need to be a bit careful with your money while you figure out what to do next.”
“It’s fine, but you have to let me pay next time, or whenever I get things back up and running. Samara suggested just doing some outfits and skin care, but I’m not sure.”
“Would you ever consider going to university? I mean, assuming that finances weren’t a problem? I really think you’d enjoy it there, and it’s not like you have to go all out and get a PhD like me, I don’t even know what a PhD in design looks like. But you’d learn so much.”
“It’s not about the cost,” I reply, shaking my head. “I just don’t feel like the studying type, I think I’d be bored out of my mind. I like the freedom to do my own thing.”
“Of course, freedom is important. But imagine having all the knowledge from a degree too, not to mention the credentials. You could really take your stuff to the next level, and you’d get to know other people in the business, build a network.”
“I guess. But the idea of sitting in a classroom and doing assignments… it just doesn’t excite me.”
“Life can’t be exciting all the time, Jules, sometimes you have to invest in your future.”
I smile weakly. I hate feeling like I’m disappointing him. “I know you’re trying to help, and I appreciate it. I’ll think about it, but no promises, okay?”
“That’s all I’m asking,” he says. “Just think about it.”
Puppy
Summary: You meet a clingy but sweet guy.
Pairing: Cole Turner x fem!Reader
Warnings: clingy Cole, meet cute, fluff
“Wait, miss. You lost this,” a cute guy chases after you. He pants as he finally catches up with you. “You forgot—” he wheezes. “Phew…I ran faster than I thought.”
“Oh, my wallet,” you smile sweetly at the guy selling you a plant moments ago. “I would forget my head if it wasn't screwed on.” He laughs and hands you your wallet.
“You’re very welcome, miss. Uh-I’m Cole by the way. I sold you the plant.” He nervously babbles. “Do you want me to carry the plant to your car?”
You chuckle. It’s a small plant, and he seems a little too eager for your taste. But you hold out your hand and tell him your name. “Y/N, thank you again. No, the plant isn’t heavy, I’ve got this.”
His face falls, and his eyes sadden. Cole wrings his hands, and he struggles to find a way to invite you. “Maybe next time.”
“How can I thank you?” you try to be polite. Cole seems to be nervous around women, and a little shy. “Do you want to go for coffee? You’re invited.”
“Coffee? Now? I mean,” he flashes you a sweet smile. “Oh…okay…wait. I’ll tell Edna to watch my stall.” He runs off but stops in his tracks to look over his shoulder. “You’ll be here when I come back, right?”
“Sure. I invited you for coffee,” you playfully say. “Remember? It was like ten seconds ago.”
“I’ll be right back.” This time he runs off to talk with one of the other stall owners.
“So…uh are you single?” He walks next to you. Cole holds the coffee you bought him in a tight grip, almost crushing the cup in his hand. “Crap. I didn’t want to overstep. Sorry. I sometimes babble when I’m around a pretty woman.”
“I wouldn’t have invited you for coffee if I was taken,” you stop walking to wrap your hand around his wrist. He’s the right amount of cute and confused. Like a lost puppy and you kinda of like being the confident one for once. “How about you?”
“Free as a bird,” he rolls his eyes at his words and internally curses himself. If he messes this spontaneous date up, he will kick his own ass. “I’m single.” Cole hastily adds. “What brings you here, Y/N?”
“I wanted to buy a plant,” you joke, “and honey.”
Cole smiles widely. His heart flutters a little when you look up at him.
“Shoot, look at the time. I got to go. I need to check on a few e-mails and call my boss.”
He sighs and nods. Somewhere between walking to the coffee shop and going for a walk, he messed things up again.
“That was nice, though,” you lick your lips. “We should do this again. Maybe next time we can have lunch together, or brunch. I don’t know what the kids these days do on their second date.”
Cole furrows his brows. His eyes light up and he grins. “I could invite you for dinner or cook for you. Maybe we can have lunch and coffee… or a walk in the park. I know a perfect spot.”
“Cole,” you place your hand on his chest and look up at him, “relax. You’ve got ten out of ten. I want to see you again, so…relax.” You stand on tiptoes to peck his lips. “Just you know, I don’t kiss a guy on a first date.”
He nods and swallows thickly when you grab his phone to save your number. “I can bring a new plant to our next date.”
“Just bring you,” you cup the back of his neck to bring Cole down for a kiss. “That will be enough…”
“Hey it’s me…uh Cole. I called to ask if we wanted to meet at six or seven. Call me if you have time.”
You checked on your mailbox only to find you missed ten calls from Cole.
You sigh deeply.
Cole is a sweet guy, and you liked him from the beginning, but this is a little much.
It’s been barely two days since you met and he won't stop calling and sending messages.
“Hey, it’s me again…Cole.”
The last message almost sounds desperate.
“I didn’t want to scare you off. I’m sorry. Fuck…I always mess things up. I understand if you don’t want to see me again.”
You are about to delete all of his messages and forget about Cole. He’s a little too clingy for your taste.
Your finger hovers over the button, ready to block Cole but your eyes land on the plant, and you change your mind.
Instead of deleting his number, you call him back. He deserves a second chance.
Cole immediately answers the phone, making you chuckle.
“Hi, sorry. I couldn’t take your calls. I thought about cooking tonight. I have the rest of the week off and wanted to ask if you have time to join me for dinner tonight.”
He tells you that he'll be there. Of course, he does. Cole waited two days for you to answer his calls or messages.
Cole may be a lost puppy, but he’s your puppy and you won’t let him slip through your fingers.
You always had a thing for sweet guys…
On coming out as trans:
I live in a very middle-class, Christian, conservative area, so I was bracing myself for the worst when I decided to come out publically to my co-workers and customers. (I work in a restaurant/bar that attracts a particular demographic: Imagine middle-aged ladies coming to brunch, older men coming for a pint after work, families bringing their children and dogs, most of them white, wealthy, and cishet. For context, I'm also 5 ft 4, and pre-everything, with a gender neutral name that leans towards the girly side, at least in my country.)
The first co-worker I came out to was a low-level supervisor, a gay cis guy in his 20s. He was a bit confused at first, had to ask a lot of questions to understand exactly what was changing, but ever since then he has been unconditionally supportive. He volunteered to tell the other managers that I'm trans, so I didn't need to go through the stress of that conversation multiple times.
The rest of the managers/supervisors (all cishet) at some point or another said that I can go to them if customers or other staff bother me (which hasn't happened at all), and all get my pronouns right most of the time, and are quick to correct themselves when they don't. They even go out of their way to use affirming language - one of my co-workers realised one day that that were no women on shift at the time, turned to me and said something about it being a boys' club and included me in that category. They celebrate my small wins, and the big ones, everything from "nice haircut!" to "ohmygod you're going on testosterone soon?? I'm so happy for you!!"
One of the managers - a cishet woman in her 50s, and the one I expected to have the worst reaction - asked a lot of questions to better understand me and offered to introduce me to her friend, who is also a trans man. This is a big deal to me, because I don't know any other trans men in my area. According to my co-workers, she's better at getting my pronouns right than almost anyone else.
Another cishet guy I work with is in his 60s had to ask what my he/him badge meant when he first saw it, and now he always makes a point of getting my pronouns right, especially in front of other people who she/her me based on my appearance or who need a reminder.
The male customers I serve on the bar tend to ask what the badge means (although some prefer to stare at it in confusion and not comment at all). My usual response is, "It's to remind people that I'm not a girl, since a lot of people think I am," which omits a huge chunk of the truth, but isn't a lie. I've never had a bad response, though.
When I explain, they often say, "Wow, I never would have guessed you were a man" (ouch, dysphoria) and apologise genuinely and quite profusely for calling me "she" or "sweetheart" or whatever earlier in the interaction. They're eager to assure me that they meant no disrespect. Some even notice the badge and apologise without having to ask what it means. Nobody contradicts me, nobody is sarcastic or thinks I'm joking, and nobody has ever said anything transphobic to me or asked invasive questions. Some get confused and sort of gloss over my explanation, but nobody has been hateful. Sometimes they seem to accept me as a cis guy, other times they're clearly aware that I'm trans, but it doesn't affect their response either way.
The worst thing I've encountered is customers who see the he/him badge, blatantly ignore it, and then misgender me throughout the interaction. Not ideal, of course, but far better than what I was expecting.
This entire experience has reminded me of a time I read in a comment somewhere that transphobes are a very vocal minority, that transphobia feels like it's ramping up recently because transphobes know they're losing the war and are screaming in a desperate attempt to be taken seriously. They're scared that all their fearmongering and hatred is, in fact, getting them nowhere. Maybe there's some truth to that.
As I said before, I live in a conservative, middle-class area, and there are no queer bars, bookshops, etc. for miles and miles, but there are at least 3 churches within a 15 minute walk of my house. And in the 5 months I've been out publically, the worst transphobia I've faced from a co-worker or stranger is just them not using my pronouns until corrected.
I'm not saying don't be careful when you come out. I'm not saying that things always go well. Sometimes they go awfully, and I've had my own bad experiences.
What I am saying is that my faith in cis people has been restored to quite an astonishing degree, that sometimes people can surprise you in wonderful ways, that there are people out there willing to accept and respect us, and sometimes you find them where you least expect them.
I cannot explain how much I love them but I can put them in goofy situations
Smiling Friends Headcanons:
Things the Main 4 Would Do Together And How Often (Part 2)
8. Eating a meal together - They would do this twice a week for sure. Ordering in, going to a restaurant, cooking for each other, snack break, you name it, they would do it. I think Pim would enjoy cooking and also be the best at it the most out of everyone. All the other three would ADORE his food. Charlie would be the expert on ordering in and cheaper restaurants while Alan would know about the fancier places. Glep would find all the most delicious and interesting snacks all over the place. (Imagining them sitting at a table together brings me insurmountable joy)
9. Walking - This is probably close to a daily occurrence because it’s so easy and nice, even if it’s just leading each other out as they say goodbye for the day. Alan and Glep would both be the speed walkers, while Charlie and Pim would be more leisurely, humming or singing as they walk. This could change based on the situation though like if they’re tired or excited. If it’s a longer walk where they’re talking, I think they’d keep pace with each other.
10. Reading - This is something they would do if they were bored on a Sunday or something, so not too often nor on a regular basis. I’ve had this funny scenario in my head where they do “Book Club”, except they’re all reading a shitty book by like Colleen Hover or something at the same time. They’d be all over whoever’s room and every so often someone would laugh and shout out the number of a funny or shocking page. And then the slower readers would quickly flip forward and the faster ones would flip back if they missed it. I think Charlie would skim the book and read it closer if he’s amused while Alan would just naturally read fast, making them the faster readers, while Pim and Glep would be slower just because they’re taking their time and enjoying it to the best of their abilities.
11. Going to church - Considering Charlie is canonically(?) catholic, I just had to add this one. This is something they would do once and never again or they’d just go for Christmas and Easter. Charlie would be chill about it and try to show the others what to do the first time, but (as an ex-catholic myself) participating in mass is a skill you can only really learn over time, so the first time would be a little rough. Pim would enjoy it because of the singing and the “Peace be with you’s” while Alan would be nervous since he doesn’t really know what to do (he doesn’t seem to be/have been part of any sort of faith, so it’s pretty new to him). Glep would be bored out of his mind and just take a nap on the pews. Thankfully, Charlie doesn’t give a shit what the other people at his church think (although at a busy time like Christmas or Easter, less people would be paying the four of them any mind anyway) so he just tries to get everyone through it. It would be somewhat exhausting for everyone involved, but they’re doing it for Charlie so they guess it’s worth it? I highly doubt they would keep this up over the years lmao.
12. Going to an Arcade - They’d go at least a couple times a year! Maybe team on a couple claw machines, Battle it out on Dance Dance Revolution and Air Hockey, honestly they would love all the PVP stuff and if there are tickets involved, I think they’d get a bunch of candy and just stash it in the office somewhere for a rainy day.
13. Going to Brunch - I separated this from “Eating a meal together” because I feel like Brunch is a totally different ballpark for them. I imagine they would cosplay as posh Victorian ladies just for shits and giggles wearing the most fancy, beautiful dresses they can find. They would then spread the most ATROCIOUS MADE UP GOSSIP known to man using the names of people they’ve met just to fuck with everyone at the brunch place. And not just any brunch place, it’s THE brunch place. They make reservations at the same one every time. This would be a seasonal event done twice in Spring for the funniest impact. Charlie brought it up as a joke once and Alan and Pim absolutely ran with it (Alan suggested the gossip and Pim suggested dressing up). However, Glep is the RUMOR MACHINE and the others are always so impressed and amused with what he comes up with. They get really into it, even doing stuff like drinking tea with their pinkie out and eating fancy food. Though they do go eat somewhere after because the food they eat in character isn’t filling nor their favorite to eat. Nonetheless, they always laugh so hard afterward and it usually makes their year.
14. Karaoke - I feel like they would start doing this once around Christmas time and then just keep doing it as a tradition every year. They would also do it on boring rainy days sometimes too. Regardless of when they do it, they can pick any song they want. Want to sing a Christmas song in January? Sure, why not. However, after a few years of this, they would eventually ban playing more than two Wheezer songs in a row because they all like singing Wheezer and some days it’s all they will have in the queue. Other than Weezer, I think Alan would be into any Lemon Demon and Weird Al songs, Pim would be into older Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande songs, Charlie would be into Jackson Dean and Jimmy Buffett, and Glep would be into The Vanished People and 100 Gecs.
CL16 | Echoes of Sorrow
(part 2)
an: this is a continuation of the max fic i posted a few days ago :) this might be a little short. sorry about that warning: swearing, death, drunk driving, car accident word count: 1.5k
“Are you sure?” he asked through the door. His girlfriend had locked herself in, unable to believe the news she had just received.
“I just peed on three sticks. I’m sure,” she sighed. She wasn't expecting this, but she wouldn't change anything either. Initially, she didn’t think much of the fact that her period had started being pretty light, but when she started to get weird cravings like hot Cheetos dipped in strawberry yogurt, she had a feeling something was going on, so she went and bought a few pregnancy tests. Now, she had used three, and all three were positive.
A light knock was heard on the door. “Alex, can I come in? Please?” She was a little afraid of his reaction, but she needed to face it at some point, so she got up, unlocked the door, and turned around, facing the sink. She was afraid of bursting into tears if she looked at him. They had never talked about this. She heard the door open and the footsteps approach her slowly.
He took a quick look at the three tests lying on the sink. “You’re actually pregnant?” he asked. He wasn’t sure how she felt about this. “Are you keeping it?” He couldn't help but hope she was going to say yes. Starting a family with her would make his world so much better.
“I’m not sure,” she sighed, “I’m sorry.” She looked down, and he couldn’t help the fear that crept into him.
“Hey, look at me,” he said as he moved over and turned her head so she looked directly into his eyes. “Don’t apologize,” he smiled, hoping his voice wasn’t full of the fear he felt. “If you don't want this, that’s totally fine, but if you do decide you’re ready to start a family, I’m here, and I will be, every step of the way.” He placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
She couldn’t stop the smile that unfolded. “You promise?” she asked hopefully. She had been let down before, and she didn’t want to end up taking care of a baby all by herself.
“I promise,” he assured her. “Now, how about I cook an amazing breakfast for you?” He placed a quick kiss on her cheek and led her to the kitchen.
“Oh yeah? And give me food poisoning?” she teased. She knew her boyfriend's cooking skills were lacking, to say the least.
“Wow, I’m hurt. How dare you?” he asked, making a fake frown and putting both his hands over his heart.
Neither of them could hold back the laughter since they both knew who was the better cook in the apartment. “I was actually thinking of inviting my mom to brunch and giving her the good news,” Alexandra said as she pulled out her phone and shot her mom a quick message. “I know you have some work to do today anyway,” she looked up at her boyfriend, “but if you get done early, maybe you could meet us somewhere?” Charles couldn’t stop the smile on his face.
“Sounds like a plan,” he said and placed a loving kiss on her lips. “Text me if I need to pick you two up somewhere,” he said and moved out of her way.
“I sure will,” she said as she picked up her bag. “Don’t do anything stupid,” she said, smiling, as she walked out of the front door, ready to meet with her mom.
Charles didn’t waste time and got to work on a new architecture project. The deadline was not too far away, and he needed to be done. His mind casually wandered every chance it got, and he couldn’t stop thinking about starting a family with Alex. He had wanted that for a long time; he just never had the courage to talk to her about it. If he had it all his way, he would have three kids. He had two brothers himself and wouldn’t have it any other way. He loved having his brothers when they were younger. Sure, they were annoying at times, especially his younger brother, but he would always love them. It was nice to have someone after their father passed away. Of course, their mother was still alive, and he could have talked to her, but when she one day would pass away, he would still have both his brothers, and he didn’t want his child to be lonely if he and Alex were to pass unexpectedly.
Instead of having all these morbid thoughts, he got back to work but still couldn't shake his thoughts from Alexandra. He really wanted to be there when she told her mom.
Alexandra was having the time of her life. She and her mom got their hair done, got their nails done, and went shopping. She still hadn’t told her mom the news. She wasn’t really sure how to start. They ended up in the park. They talked about everything and nothing, except for her pregnancy. That’s when she got a call from Charles. “Hi, what's up?” She was really happy to hear his voice, even if they had seen each other only a couple of hours earlier. “I’m good,” she could almost hear him smile, if not laugh. “Are you still with your mom?” He was definitely laughing. “Yeah, we’re just sitting in the park,” she said as she adjusted the way she was sitting a little. She wanted to ask him to join, but how would that look? “Mind if I join you?” he asked, as if he had read her mind. “I would actually love that,” she smiled. She couldn’t help it. She had been so afraid Charles wasn’t going to like this, and yet he seemed so happy about it.
Fifteen minutes later, Charles was in the park looking for Alexandra and her mom. He spotted them easily; she was the only one who wasn’t wearing a jacket. He was quite surprised she didn’t get sick more often, considering she rarely brought a jacket. It was a good thing he was wearing an extra layer of clothes so she could take his. “Have you told her yet?” he asked, a smile on his lips. If he knew her as well as he thought, then he’d bet everything she didn’t know how to.
“Not yet,” she admitted, looking at the ground. He brought her into a hug and kissed the top of her head. “I was not really sure how to,” she looked up at him with an admiring look. No matter what happened, he knew he would always love her.
“Good thing I came then.” He let go of her but kept an arm around her waist. “Should we tell her now, or do you want to invite her over for dinner and tell her then?” he asked.
She thought for a little. “Maybe dinner is a good idea,” she smiled and nuzzled into him, partly to smell his cologne and partly because she was absolutely freezing.
Charles laughed and took off his jacket, giving it to her. “I was pretty sure you didn’t bring a jacket.” She smiled and put it on. It smelled like him. She loved it.
“Charles, would you like to join us? We’re going to eat lunch at a café not far from here,” Alex’s mom asked. He couldn’t say no, partly because it would be rude, and because he was actually starving.
They decided to just walk to the café since it was pretty close, and taking transport would just take more time. They reached the café just as Alex spotted a friend on the other side of the road. “You guys go in, I’m gonna go say hi!” she waved them in and looked to see if any cars were coming.
“Alex, it’s pouring down. Why don't you just text her?”
“Mom, I haven’t seen Lily in ages! I need to at least hug her. I’m already soaked, so a few more minutes isn’t the end of the world,” she said. It was a pretty valid reason.
Charles pulled her into a quick kiss. “Don’t take too long.” He quickly hugged her and let her move. There were still no cars, or so they thought. It didn’t seem like there were any cars, but just as she was in the middle of the road, a car came out of nowhere. Charles was the first to react, but he wasn’t quick enough. He couldn’t look, but he also couldn’t take his eyes off all the damage the car had done. He couldn’t see Alexandra, but he could see a pool of blood starting to form under the car.
As he saw the blood, he couldn’t keep it together anymore. He broke down crying as he heard a voice behind him. “There’s been an accident,” he could hear the horror and pain in the voice, “please hurry.” It was barely a whisper. He felt a hand on his shoulder, but he couldn’t focus on who it was. All he knew was two things. One, he wished it was Alexandra. Two, he wished he would have thought of calling for help instead of just staring.
🥰🌷
This time, no business dinner, no café closing, Bucky decided he was going to invite you for a real date. He was done waiting for his turn.
Since your last encounter, you both texted each other almost all day, sometimes during the night. You even called him, saying it will be easier than typing.
Everything was going smoothly, too smoothly to Bucky liking, but he tried to let his pessimist voice in the closet.
From Y/N
So … I looked over my agenda, im free all weekend, so whenever you can, I’m down for the restaurant.
Did you realise it was a date? Bucky started to overthink and imagine you were just being friendly, not flirting with him, maybe he was to blind…maybe you were not interest.
From Y/N
I was even thinking…what about doing brunch on Saturday then go on a little walk and maybe…well we can see where that lead us? If you’re free of course… 😉
He smiled, the entire day together? Gosh, did he deserve to be this lucky.
From Bucky
This sounds amazing, I’m free all Saturday, going overboard on Sunday. JBB
You giggled; it was cute that he always ended his texts with JBB.
From Bucky
May I come and get you? If you’re not afraid of motorbikes.
“You have to say yes, that’s like super-hot”, interfered your best friend.
“Can you not read my texts?” You said in a fake annoyed ton.
From Y/N
Sounds even better! Let me text you my address… say around 10am?
“Well, finally you’re getting somewhere?” chimed Sam.
“Can you not read my texts?”
Bucky glared at Sam who was just smiling at him, innocently.
Saturday
You were up since 6am, absolutely panicking. You were going to spend most of your day with Bucky, if last night you were impatient, right now, you wonder if it will not be easier to call him to say you were sick. Like if your best friend was in your head, she sent you a text:
“No, you’re not sick, it’s gonna be a good day. It’s your turn, love. Your time to live what you write about for all these years. Go leave your romantic novel. You got this!”
You smiled, grateful for her words.
An incoming call, Bucky, you anserwed:
“Yes?”
“Hi, it’s me, I mean bucky…I’m a bit early, but the weather is so nice I thought… we could take the longer way to enjoy the ride? Is…is that okay?”
“More than okay, let me just put my shoes on and I’ll be right here.”
“Okay, doll, see ya!”
“B---bye”
Did he just call me doll?
You shook your head and put your shoes and jacket on. Running down the stairs, you were meet with a nice view. Bucky was leaning on his bike, arms crossed, biceps bulging, and he looked…ravishing.
“Hey cowboy!” you cheered.
He chuckled and walked to you. “Hey there, doll…is that okay if I call you that? I just realise after the phone that…”
You shut him off with your hand on his left arm. “It’s totally okay, I’m just not use to have a nickname, old fashion one, use for me from a guy.”
“Cowboy is also new to me”, he smiled sheepishly, taking your hand carefully from his left arm, that’s when you realise.
“Oh sorry! I didn’t…I mean, tell me if your left arm is a no touch zone…okay?”
He kissed your hand. “For now, I prefer not. “
He led you to the bike and handed you a helmet. But before you could put it on, he’s phone ranged and he looked at it, cursing.
“What now ?...really…fuck now is not the time and you know it. Can…of course…but fuck Sam…yeah, you’ll make it up to her.”
He hung up and looked at you with the most puppy eyes you’ve ever seen.
“I’m so sorry doll…, but…duty is calling, I have to go early, the target has moved faster and…”
“I get it, go save the world and yes, Sam must make it to me” you smiled, a bit disappointed. “I really was looking for our day.”
“So do I…gosh, Y/N, I wish I could stay here right now.”
He held your hands and you came closer to him.
“Come back fast, okay? We can have maybe… brunch at my place, I make the most perfect banana pancakes.”
He cupped your cheek with his right hand, stroking your cheekbone. “I’ll do my best; I’ll text you when I’m on my way back.”
You nodded, putting your hand on his chest. “Be safe, cowboy.”
“I will, I have a reason to come back now.” With that he kissed your forehead and left without looking back.
When he was out of sight, you called your best friend.
“My life is a fucking joke…”
Yesterday a group of family and friends did the annual Putting Challenge in my wife's hometown. It's basically bar hopping with a purpose. Our group had 16 players (four teams of four players). Other friends and family showed up to watch and hang out at the bars.
There was a fee to play. It included a t-shirt. Five bars in the nice little downtown had putting greens set up inside. I was terrible at putting. I was more interested in talking to everyone.
The VFW's hole had combat boots for obstacles. I thought the little green circles could have been a mine field. Have firecrackers go off if struck by a golf ball. No one listened to my idea.
At another bar players had to sit on a horse saddle while putting.
I got a the high score at this one. "Sir, that's enough. Put down the putter, other people want a turn." The starting point was outside the frame of this picture. You had to hit the ball up a ramp and get it through a narrow slot, then it would come down the side you see here. Looked easy. Wasn't, for me.
People wore costumes or matching t-shirts. My son Jack and daughter-in-law Ali were toasty warm. The outside temperature went up a lot during the day, and the bars were crowded. Eventually Jack and Ali had to ditch the costumes.
Sheila, Jack and Ali love the pull tabs. Sheila opened a $200 winner. The three of them split the prize. Do you think they walked away with more money than when they started?
No. Winning cards just mean you can get MORE pull tabs.
We also stopped by the cute little coffee shop. Everyone I was with agrees that non-chain coffee shops are cool.
When evening rolled around, and all the pull tabs were opened, Sheila and I and two friends of ours from out city hired a car service to bring us home. It's a two person operation. I thought we'd ride in some older mini-van. Instead the driver showed up in a black, late model Suburban that was immaculately clean. That was nice.
Today Sheila and I will return in my car to get her car. I would like to find a place to have brunch or lunch while we're out, maybe somewhere that doesn't sell pull tabs.
It's sunny. Today's high is forecast to be 72°F. There's nothing on the calendar so it should be a pleasant, relaxing day.
Ben Chilwell Imagine| two
Author’s note: This is something I got requested on Wattpad. They wanted something with either Chilly or Pulisic, and where the reader was a Manchester United supporter. The rest was up to me 😁
Little summary: Throwback to Chilly and his knee injury. He just had surgery, and you are the nurse taking care of him and his wound.
Masterlist
"Good morning, Mr. Chilwell."
"Good morning, nurse. I thought I had told you that you can call me Ben."
"And I already told you I can't do that while working. I must be professional" I say while I get everything ready to check his wound.
"Yeah, I'm sorry. But if you weren't working... Ouch."
"Sorry."
"It's ok. If you weren't working, will you call me Ben?"
"I will, yes."
"And if your shift was over but you still were at the hospital?"
"That's and odd question" I chuckle.
"If your shift was over and you... I don't know, were seen hanging out with a patient, will that get you in trouble?"
"What are you asking me, Mr. Chilwell?"
"There is a Chelsea-United tomorrow night. And you don't work night shifts, do you?"
"I do not, no."
"I was thinking... That maybe... Since you are a United supporter and I am a Chelsea player..." he says, awkwardly scratching the back of his head.
"Yes?" I ask, arching a brow.
"I was wondering if you would like to watch the game with me. Here on my room. I have a laptop, so we could... I don't know" he shrugs.
"Mr. Chilwell, are you asking me on a date?"
"Maybe? Am I getting you in trouble if I do?"
"Once my shift is over, I'm allowed to do whatever I want. Besides, this wound is healing really well. They'll probably send you home in a couple of days."
"Is that a yes, then?"
"You put the laptop and the game, and I'll bring the food. Do you fancy anything special? Chinese perhaps?"
"Chi... Oh, you know. You know!" he laughs.
"I do" I shrug. "Chinese, then?"
"Chinese" he replies with a smile.
━━━━━━❃━━━━━━
"Evening, nurse."
"Evening... Ben" I say as I walk into his room, a big smile showing on his face when he hears his name. "How are you feeling?"
"Good, good. Did anyone tell you anything about coming here?"
"Nope, nothing. Don't worry."
"Great. That smells really good" he says, pointing at the bags I'm carrying.
"And it tastes even better, you'll see. How do we do it?" I say as I move one of the tables that you can put over the bed. "We eat while we watch the game, eat during the break, after the game..."
"I'm quite hungry right now" Ben says. "Maybe we could start eating some bits now?"
"Of course. I brought a bit of everything so you can try them all and see what you like and what you don't like."
"Perfect. Where do you want to sit? The bed is big enough for both of us" he says with a little smirk. "And I think we'll be more comfortable that way to watch the game."
"Yeah, comfortable" I chuckle.
"Comfort is all I'm thinking about these days " he says as he moves so I can sit next to him. "So..."
"So" I repeat.
"Who do you think is gonna win?"
"Us, of course."
"So confident" Ben laughs. "Buy I think we will win."
"Ha!"
"Wanna bet?" he asks with a teasing smile.
"Ok, let's bet" I say, moving a bit to face him while trying to not touch his bad leg.
"If we win..." Ben says, licking his lips and making me feel weird things on my stomach. "If we win, I'll buy you dinner. But somewhere nice."
"And if we win?"
"If you win, you buy me dinner."
"Again?" I laugh.
"Ok, then lunch. Breakfast. Brunch. Whatever you fancy."
"And if it is a draw?"
"We'll think of something. Do we have a deal?" Ben says, offering me his hand.
"We do" I say as I take it, our eyes meeting and making those weird things I'm feeling on my stomach go crazy. "Should we start eating?"
"Yeah, sure" he says, letting go of my hand.
━━━━━━❃━━━━━━
"We should have won."
"We, should have won. You stole a penalty from us."
"That wasn't a penalty."
"It was, Ben. It was" I say as I get up from the bed. Turns out that sitting together like that, was indeed very comfortable, and by the end of the game I had found myself cuddling against him, his arm around my shoulders.
"Puli barely touched him!"
"I beg to differ" I shrug.
"Are you leaving already?" he asks while I pick what is left of our dinner.
"We both have early mornings tomorrow. They are sending you home."
"Will you be there when they discharge me?"
"If you want me to..."
"Of course I do! You are my favourite nurse" he says with a cheeky smile.
"Thank you" I reply, feeling my cheeks get warm.
"What are we going to do about our bet?"
"I don't know... I'll guess we'll have to buy each other dinner."
"That's two more dates."
"Or one if I buy you your dinner, and you buy me mine."
"I thought we had had fun tonight..." he says, looking down.
"We have!" I quickly say, moving to take his hand. "We have, Ben. I was just teasing you."
"Rude" he chuckles.
"Sorry" I smile while his thumb does small circles on my skin. "Do you want to meet again, then?"
"I do. So you better start thinking about what we are going to be eating."
"Italian? And we can watch my game against City."
"A Manchester derby and Italian food sounds perfect. But just try not to throw your pasta at me if you lose" Ben says with a teasing smile.
"We aren't going to lose. And I am very chill when I watch football."
"Definitely" he laughs.
"Meh, meh, meh" I say, rolling my eyes but not being available to contain a smile. "And I better go. See you tomorrow?"
"You know where to find me. It's not like I'm running away or anything" he shrugs, making both of us laugh.
"Goodnight, Mr. Chilwell" I say, kissing his cheek and letting go of his hand.
"Goodnight, favourite nurse" he replies, the biggest smile on his face as I leave the room.
[whispering] my phone’s the one nearly dead this time. eight percent, so i gotta make it quick. tonight was.. really nice. thanks again. the takeout was really cool of you too, and i’ll pay you back when i get in. i’m talking so quiet ‘cause im in an uber, and i think i just saw the driver giving me a dirty look through the mirror. he has his own playlist on—i mean, unless there’s a new radio station called ‘on the grind’ with two fire emojis and, like, the one of the arm flexing? it’s all been pretty bad stuff so far, but there was this one song, and—it kinda reminded me of you, a bit. [a pause, before he brushes over it] i tried to shazam it because i’d look weird leaning over the console to see what it was called, but it was over by then. bummer! we’re coming up on my street now, though, and i’m on three percent now, so i’ll go. see you soon?
⠀☆⠀09:47 PM
injunnie asked me about that mark you left. i made up something about my kitchen cabinet door, but i know he didn’t really believe me. he had that look in his eye, you know? that one where it feels like he sees right through you. anyway.. maybe we should keep them somewhere less noticeable next time? we’re not—you know.
i’m going out with mark and chenle tonight. they’re doing a two-for-one on cocktails and there’s karaoke, so i think it’ll be fun. i probably won’t see it ‘til tomorrow, but call back when you hear this. [he laughs] or if i am still up and drunk when you call then you can sing me a lullaby, yeah? [an awkward pause] uh. i’ll just—talk to you later.
⠀☆⠀10:26 AM
[hesitant] oh my god. i didn’t—sorry. i should’ve told you i had someone over. i completely forgot about the brunch thing, it’s my fault. kind of a dick move, too, i really am sorry. i don’t know how to.. i’ll buy you dinner, or something. to make it up to you.
[a prolonged pause]
[haltingly] that—that was just a one-time thing, though. just.. just in case you were wondering. it won’t happen again.
[another pause, and the sound of him shifting in his place]
so, um. yeah. i just wanted to apologise, ‘cause you were gone before i could get the chance. call me when you hear this? if you want to, that is.
⠀☆⠀00:03 AM
i guess.. i guess you’re busy, or something. sorry. i know it’s late. you’re probably asleep. or working? renjun told me you’re on night shifts now.. did it slip your mind with me? or maybe you’ve told me already, i don’t know. i think my memory’s been getting worse lately. [a scoffed laugh] fuck, maybe you’re with—you know. someone else? that’d be fine, obviously, i know we’re not.. yeah. hell, i was the one who said we weren’t gonna be exclusive.
[a pause]
i haven’t been, um. seeing anyone else, though. not since that last time. it’s just you. but if you were, then.. anyway. i heard jeno tell you his friend was single the other day. that jaemin guy? and that restaurant downtown would be nice for a night out, tonight. they do that salad you like, and—and the side dishes.
[a second pause. he takes a breath in]
i think.. i think i need a drink. text me once you listen to this?
⠀☆⠀11:58 PM
[sounding a little breathless] hi! i think im going to fill your inbox up at this point. maybe the reception’s bad in the taxi. but anyway—i had fun tonight. again. i.. i missed you, you know? [a giggle] wow, i think i feel a little light-headed. in a good way, obviously. i almost forgot what it was like with you. oh! and the actual reason i called—you left your hoodie here. better come grab it soon, or i’ll have it for myself. you can never have too many clothes. [he stops for a moment] does that sound too.. ah, nevermind. i hope you get home alright. talk to you tomorrow, baby.
⠀☆⠀10:49 PM
renjun asked me what we were doing. i knew he probably knew—or at least, like, had an idea of what was going on—but it still surprised me. nearly choked on my drink when he sprung it on me out of nowhere. i thought he just wanted to get lunch. i told him the truth—that we’re just.. messing around. he’s not gonna tell any of the others, so don’t worry. he thought— [a stilted laugh] he thought that we were together. but.. well. we’re not, obviously.
[a pause. he mumbles something to himself, cuts himself off, then tries again]
did jeno give you jaemin’s number? he had that gross grin on his face the other night, that same one he did when he kept trying to set chenle up on a blind date. and you never did tell me if you were out with him the other night. not that it, like, matters. but still.
[a second, longer pause]
anyway. i think i’m gonna go to bed. can we get dinner soon? i’ll pay.
⠀☆⠀11:18 PM
hey. [a small pause] i don’t know why i’m calling, really. i’m just at my apartment. watching reruns and drinking through that wine chenle gave me—which is awful, by the way. i think he was just trying to get it out of his fridge by offloading it onto me.
that movie you told me you watched all the time back in uni was on earlier. i would’ve called then, but my phone was dead, so i kept it on. it was pretty good, actually. kinda.. sappy. but in a good way. romantic, i don’t know. romcoms have never really been my thing, but i know they’re yours, so.. yeah. [a tired laugh, and a pause. the tv is faintly audible in the background] i didn’t know i could get wine tipsy this early. maybe that’s why i called out of the blue? ah, i don’t know. i’ll go now, though—this episode’s just starting to get interesting. let’s talk later.
⠀☆⠀01:21 AM
[he’s yelling, almost, struggling to be heard over the beat of the song blasting through the speakers] yah, why did you dip? i was—i was looking forward to tonight, you know. jeno is boring, and mark is a lightweight, and jisung steps on my feet when we dance. it would’ve been way better with you here. and i miss you, baby. they need to fire the DJ here, because they’re seriously awful. i might just ditch the rest and come find you instead.
[he stops, considering it]
actually.. yeah. you won’t mind, will you? yah, pick up, c’mon. call me back, ‘cause i’m on my way to your apartment. i’ll buy a bottle of malibu on the way so it won’t taste as awful when we throw it up later, and you can set up that speaker chenle got you last year, because i know you probably still have it stuffed in a closet somewhere. [his voice returns to normal volume, and the music is abruptly significantly quieter] get your dancing shoes on, baby. and.. take your shirt off? [he giggles, and his laughter interrupts his goodbye] i’ll be there soon!
⠀☆⠀02:17 AM
fuck. can’t you just—can you pick up? please? i need it, i need you to hear this. i feel like i’m going insane, it’s fucked up. [a pause, and a slightly shaky breath] why did i say that? why did i say no labels? fucking.. fucking mark and shots and that bruise from that fucking counter. i’ve drank too much, and i hope i forget i’ve said this in the morning, but i—i need to know. it’s just you for me. that time with that guy was stupid, and i should’ve kicked him out as soon as i woke up, but i knew about brunch and i knew you’d be coming over and i was feeling petty so i just thought.. i thought you’d get jealous, i don’t know. it was stupid. i’m sorry for lying, baby. i didn’t mean to. is it—is it just me for you too? did you save jaemin’s number? did you text him? please tell me you didn’t. he doesn’t know anything about you, not like i do. i still have your hoodie, and renjun thinks i need to get my shit together, and chenle nearly threw up on my shoes on the way out the bar, and i just.. i want you. i want you so bad, it’s killing me.
[a long pause. his mumbling is inaudible]
call me back when you hear this.
The Pacific Ocean (Jegulus One Shot)
They'd been planning this trip for months. Or, more accurately, James have been planning this trip for months. He'd been so excited planning out their first real adventure together. He and Regulus had taken a trip once before, but only to Ireland, and it had rained so much they'd hardly bothered to leave the cabin. This was a real adventure somewhere far off: Sydney, Australia.
The only thing he hadn't accounted for was the time difference.
"It's like they flipped the bloody clock over," James groaned as he woke up hours before his alarm for the third day in a row. They'd been waking up too early and then finding it impossible to stay up late.
Their trip to Sydney had involved lots of activities on the itinerary, but about half of them had been scrapped so far.
Regulus sat up with a yawn. He'd been up for half an hour already, but hadn't wanted to move it disturb James. Now that James was up, he gave up all pretense.
"Shower then breakfast?" he asked.
James nodded into his pillow.
"You go first. Then me."
"Not together?" Regulus asked.
That got James up.
An hour later they were showered, changed, and ready for the day, but it was hardly past 6:30.
They found a cute brunch spot and made their way there. The streets were deserted as they walked. They were the only ones in the cafe at that hour, but it was nice weather for an outdoor meal, so Regulus didn't mind.
After they'd eaten, they sat on a bench in a park to plan out the day.
James yawned widely as he looked at the itinerary.
"Aquarium next, right?"
Regulus shook his head sadly.
"It doesn't open for two and a half more hours."
"Oh," James said, "well we were going to go to the maritime museum too. When's that open?"
"Same thing, 10:00," Regulus said. He tried to be gentle, because he could see the disappointment written all over James' face.
"I'm guessing the other museums are all the same then?" He kicked at the dirt where his legs hung down from the bench.
"Yeah," Regulus replied. He wished he had something positive to add, but nothing on their list was open at 7:00 in the morning.
"Maybe we should just go home," James said with a sigh, "I've mucked this all up and didn't plan well enough. I'm sorry."
Regulus took his hand and held on firmly.
"No," he said, "don't do that. We can salvage this. You did a great job planning for this trip, it's not your fault the bloody clock is upside down."
James gave him a half-hearted smile and squeezed his hand, and it felt too much like he was going to give up on the trip and leave for home.
"No giving up," Regulus ordered. "We can go to the coast, see the Pacific Ocean."
James perked up.
"I've never seen the Pacific Ocean before."
"Yes I know," Regulus said. It had been so important to James that they see it, and Regulus refused to leave without him getting that chance. "Maritime Museum and Aquarium afterwards. They'll be open then."
"Yeah!" James said cheerfully. He stood up, still holding Regulus' hand. "Let's go see the ocean."
Regulus stood up too, and carefully collected his belongings. When he looked up, James was watching him lovingly.
"Thank you," he said. "For salvaging this."
Regulus nodded.
"You made a great itinerary, and we can still try to do all of it. We just might have to do it out of order."
"Yeah!" James said cheerfully. "But still, thanks. I'm glad we aren't giving up on this. I'm really glad I get to be here with you."
Regulus brought James' hand to his lips and kissed it.
"You planned the perfect trip. But it's okay to adapt it a bit." James' smile was sappy sweet and loving. "Okay enough of that. Let's go to the ocean."
"To the ocean!" James echoed, before apparating them to Vaucluse Viewpoint, and one of the most beautiful views of an ocean either of them had ever seen.
oh have I missed the chance for prompts??? I hope not. Ummmm let’s see. How about your choice of the lads going to one of the below places:
* sushi conveyor belt restaurant
* way overpriced boozy brunch
* garden seating at a pub, on a hot summer night
so, as we've already discussed, i low-key want to do ALL of these and as such have screenshotted this to return to some of them. but this one is, in a roundabout way, garden seating at a pub on a hot summer (june) night. in new york! finally!
it's also 2.3k word again (just fuck my life, honestly) and it's getting back together fic. i'm sorry. this is who i am. i hope you like it!!
It’s a beautiful night, the stickiness of the summer day having faded a bit with the sun, just gone down an hour or so ago. There are lovely, multicolored paper lanterns filled with magical light strung up above, crisscrossing the width of the garden area, scattering it in purposeful rainbow. The low, cheerful din of glasses clinking against the wooden tables and excited chatter washes over the space.
There is a nice breeze, one Draco has been told means he should be grateful this is late June in New York and not August, where breezes flee. It’s still hot, unexpectedly so; he is very aware of wearing long sleeves and concedes his agent was probably right about that. He just didn’t want—people here like to ask about his tattoo when back home they know better, or worse, really. He doesn’t want to talk about that.
He finishes his drink trying not to even think about it, drumming his fingers against his own wooden table and shaking his head when a waitress asks him if he wants a refill. Carlo, his agent, gives him an unimpressed look and says, “If we’re going to wait to start, you might as well have another drink to calm your nerves.”
“I’m not nervous,” Draco says automatically, and Carlo snorts.
“Sure. Look, if that’s the case, we might as well—”
“Just a few more minutes; they’ll be here,” Draco cuts in quickly, and now Carlo sighs.
“A few more minutes, all right. But if we wait any longer the people who want to be here will actually just leave, and then we’ll have booked all this for nothing.”
Draco nods distractedly, already looking away and glancing out over the other tables without trying to be too obvious about it or catch anyone’s eye. He still has to nod at people—people he can’t really believe exist, people excited to see him read to them, people who have read his book with their actual eyes and liked it and bought it and maybe told their friends to buy it. They have it with them, holding it in their hands. It’s startling every time he thinks about it. It still seems like a trick, like someone is going to jump out from somewhere and say “Got you!”
This is the first reading he’s doing in person, ever. He’d done a successful launch party in London, had done something of a press round, even—terrifying, the whole time, even as it all went well. He’d read from his book on the wireless, he’d chatted with a few people who walked up to him in Diagon Alley, bewilderingly, happily. He likes to talk about his book.
But now Draco’s half a world away from all that, because apparently his book is selling really well in the States, better even than back home, and the international affiliate of his publisher wanted him to do a book tour to support the second printing, which means conferences and events and more press and—
And a reading, to strangers, in a beautiful garden area behind a large, apparently historic pub in the magical area nestled between the West Village and Greenwich Village. The sounds and lights of the city around them are muffled, muted, like the world has narrowed down only to this.
It’s a long way to go, for him and for all of the people Draco had rather desperately invited—all of his friends, who had had to break their promises to come one by one as family and job issues waylaid them.
Even his extended friends, the kind he only sees at rare and rarer pub nights every few months or at weddings or funerals or—he’d given out invitations to them, too, had offered to arrange Portkeys and stays in New York even once the book tour takes him elsewhere.
A few had said they’d try to come, but as the people he’s closer to had cancelled—Pansy, histrionically heartbroken about it, Blaise playing it so cool it was clear he truly was upset, Greg and Millie and Daphne and Theo and all of them full of regrets and work and kids and things that Draco didn’t have to keep him from doing something mad like traveling around the world for a stupid little book—Draco had resigned himself to the fact that they wouldn’t come either. Why would Hermione Granger or Neville Longbottom go out of their way for someone they see once every few months now, ever since—when the people he sees at least twice a week on average couldn’t make it?
Draco had even invited—he was desperate—and he knew he wouldn’t come because they were over, of course, any obligation to come to things like this had ceased when all that had ended, so there was no way—but just in case—
He'd told himself that was all okay because his parents had promised. They don’t understand any of it, of course—Father thinks it’s a silly hobby gone a bit too far, and perhaps it had started that way, a diversion from the drudgery of managing the Malfoy estate, but now it’s all this, it’s Draco’s life that he doesn’t get—but they had said they’d be here to support him. They have no jobs, he is their family, they can arrange international Portkeys in their sleep—there’s no reason for them not to come. He’s certain they’ll be here.
Draco cranes his neck, searching the tables for any telltale blond hair he’s missed, eyes flicking to the back entrance to the pub where he’s sure they’ll emerge at any moment. Maybe they missed their Portkey and had to reschedule. Maybe there was a delay at the terminal. Maybe they decided to sleep off the time difference at their hotel and didn’t set a wakeup Floo. Maybe—
“Draco,” Carlo says, very gentle, but not patient. “We’ve got to start. I’m sorry, but I don’t think they’re coming.”
Draco shakes his head, even as the truth of that settles in the pit of his stomach like a sinking stone. He swallows past a lump in his throat, wishing he did have a new drink so his hands could be damp with cool condensation instead of clammy, anxious sweat.
He is not nervous. “You can do this,” Carlo tells him. “Just keep an eye on me; I’m here.” Draco likes talking about his book. He likes being around people, chatting with them—it’s just reading, his own words, he practically knows them by heart, they’re etched into his skin far deeper than the Mark, scratched over his heart—
But he really, really wanted his parents to come. He truly thought they would.
“All right,” Draco says finally, still shaking his head but forcing himself to come to terms. He talks himself into it as he stands up, rationalizing—it was definitely the time difference. They’re napping; Mother will wake up horrified, and they’ll get late drinks and perhaps midnight room service and laugh about it later.
That’s how he gets himself to the edge of the garden under the brightest lights, standing at a Levitating podium that settles to the ground once he reaches it. It’s hotter here, under the lights; he wants to rip his sleeves off and use them to dab at his sweaty temples. He has to take deep breaths.
Draco looks out over the crowd, their eager faces, and tries to focus on Carlo—but his face is too soft, too close to pity. He tries to look at nothing instead, knows soon he’ll be reading anyway so it doesn’t matter, he doesn’t have to look at the fact that his parents aren’t here. But first he has to talk a little, introduce himself, thank people for coming, all of these people who don’t even know him, didn’t raise him, still showed up because they liked his work that much when his parents haven’t even read—
“Hello,” Draco makes himself say, a small huff of a laugh, as charming a grin as he can muster. For a moment, that’s all he can muster; his throat is tightening, his sleeves feel like they’re getting smaller. He doesn’t think it’s possible to be strangled at your wrists, but perhaps they’re cutting off the circulation there, constricting his blood flow enough to explain why breathing is so treacherous. “I—I’m so glad you’re all here. I’m so glad that I’m here.”
More words, successful. Words are his thing, Draco reminds himself. He can do this. “And I’m—I’m grateful, really. Impossibly so. It’s really—this month, in this place, and I’m barely starting to understand how much it means to everyone because all I’ve known, all I’ve put into this book, is what it means to me—what it means to be like us, or so I assume, in what feels like a very small world, and—” He breaks off, making slightly panicked eye contact with Carlo—who taps the rainbow pin on his lapel and gives him a thumbs up, encouraging, he can do this.
Draco manages to open his mouth again, but all that emerges is a puff of slightly distressed air. And that’s when movement from the back entrance distracts him thoroughly, gratefully, another place to fix his gaze—which widens, steals more breath.
Rushing through the doorway, knocking into a slotted wooden chair and swearing, is Harry. He’s got Draco’s book wedged under his armpit, he’s whispering apologies to people he bumps into; he drags a chair out from a table with a bunch of strangers, apologizing to them and then hurriedly turning to face Draco with a slightly sweaty, flustered face.
Harry grins when Draco catches his eye. His glasses reflect the rainbow lights a little, and he looks a mess in the loveliest, most familiar way. He’s practically vibrating in his seat, excited, maybe nervous, too, and he’s—here. He’d gotten the invitation Draco sent in desperation, the note he’d scrawled I’m sure you’re busy with work, and I know we don’t really see much of each other anymore, and it’s a long way to go, but if you want to, if you have any interest, it would mean a lot be nice of you and nice to see you—and he’d Portkeyed halfway across the world and he’s here, somehow, bewilderingly, happily.
And suddenly all of Draco’s words are right there, easy, ready to be plucked up and tossed out with every confidence at where they’ll land. It’s a familiar feeling, a specific kind of confidence he’d thought entirely out of reach once he and Harry broke up and descended into the awkward, not-quite friends they’ve been since. Harry is here, and he cares for him, at least enough to show up for him, and Draco can do this because Harry clearly believes he can. It must not have even been a question in his mind, for him to come all this way.
“I’m so grateful we’re all here together,” Draco says. He touches his own pin, looks around, keeps talking. “Being together like this in a small world—it makes it feel much bigger.”
He goes on; he reads. He chokes himself a little but only for good reasons, looking up and seeing people listening, their eyes shining, laughing at the best of moments. He looks into Harry’s eyes, grins back at him, softens it when he catches Harry swiping his fingers behind his glasses as subtly as possible.
After, Draco gets another drink and sits at various tables, signing books, chatting happily. He gravitates towards Harry, who has his own drink and seems to be waiting, but when they near each other Harry whispers, “No, you can keep—I’ll wait for you, Draco, it’s all right.”
“Thank you,” Draco whispers back, hoping Harry knows how much he means it.
And there’s every opportunity to tell him as the crowd thins and the pub staff comes out to start stacking chairs and taking down the lights. Carlo leaves after hugging Draco and telling him how brilliant he’d been, telling him to get excited about doing this again two nights from now in Boston. And then there’s Harry, here, waiting.
“I’m sorry I was late,” Harry says once Draco joins him in the only other unstacked chair. The lights are all gone now, the pub staff telling them they can hang out while they finish closing up inside, the only light streaming from that backdoor. “And that I didn’t, um, tell you I was coming. I was just so—I’d heard about it, of course, but I didn’t know if you’d want me here really, I thought maybe you were just—”
“I wanted you here,” Draco says, realizing he was desperate but not in just the way he’d imagined. “I—I am so happy you came.”
“Me too,” Harry says, and then he laughs a little. “Even though I can barely see you.” He taps his wand a few times and shoots brilliantly bright, multicolored sparks out of it; they rise up to form a glowing, rainbow swirl of light above them, like all the lanterns have cracked open and spilled above them.
It’s beautiful, and Harry looks beautiful beneath it, the colors splayed across his skin as he puts his wand down, reaches out, and takes Draco’s hands. “Better,” Harry says, and then: “I’m so fucking proud of you, Draco.”
Relief, rushing and sweets, hits Draco so fast that it’s all he can feel for a moment. Gone is the disappointment, nerves, dread—all of it falls away. He can do this, he thinks; he did it.
“Do you want to—I mean, you came all this way, and this place is closing but I’m sure there are others we could—maybe food? And we could—I’d love to just—” His words are gone again but now it’s because it feels like there’s too many, that there’s so much he wants to say to Harry and it’s all got to come out quickly because “—and I’m going to Boston very soon, I’m sorry, but maybe—”
“Never been to Boston,” Harry says, smiling so fondly. He squeezes Draco’s hands.
Hang on I’m back on my modern au ideas.
Nerevar has the baby. Little baby Steren. Sucks after birth bc he’s sore and hormonal and miserable. He breast feeds until he honestly can’t take the dysphoria and pain anymore and has to quit. More time passes. Nerevar finally gets top surgery and recovers from that too. They’ve been busy with the baby and then school and then surgery and recovery. So if they do have have sex (during the rare times they can) it’s usually smth pretty quick and quiet so Steren doesn’t fucking wake up.
But Steren is older now and Nerevar is more secure with the nanny (oh fuck I need to plan who the nanny will be. Fear.) watching steren. Voryn says it’s their anniversary and they haven’t been able to go on dates as much as before (mostly they just go on coffee shop dates on campus or watching movies together when they have the time) so Voryn suggests they go out for dinner. Then leans in close and suggests they can get a hotel that night. Nerevar blushes but agrees.
Nerevar and Voryn have a really nice, kinda fancy dinner, a lot of sea food for Nerevar and he’s in Heaven. Maybe before that they saw a movie or went somewhere romantic idk. Then after dinner they go to the hotel, having a few drinks in their room. They talk a lot at first, just wanting to spend time together. Then they move onto kissing softly, working each other up slowly. They haven’t gotten the chance to enjoy themselves this throughly in a while.
Voryn is the one who really enjoys himself, exploring and praising Nerevar’s body. Telling him how he’s only gotten more and more attractive. Nerevar’s chest is flat, he’s put on even more muscle, and his cock has even gotten bigger since he upped his T dose. Nerevar is trembling and moaning as Voryn rubs his cock.
Once they start having sex though. Well then things start getting faster. They can finally go as hard as they want and be as loud as they want (the hotel has really good sound proofing. Okay. Or they do it only within reason)
They go multiple rounds. They’re both exhausted by the time they sleep. They wake up to get cleaned up and check out, have brunch, then go home to have another little nap. They start having more dinner dates like that.
