And Karp would take her own seat across from her assistant, rummaging through her nearby desk to actuall find those files she spoke on. It always helped to have them on hand after all.

"I mean, yeah. I honestly appreciate the level of trust you have in me if you're willing to confide in me. Cause I'll be honest Maya, for the longest time I didn't think you particularly cared about me." And now for a quick little perusing through the files... Yup. Medical conditions. A weaker, frailer body that wasn't suited for high intensity missions... Though... It did strike her as odd that Maya hadn't really ever requested proper time off. Or taken a sick day. ..Weird.
"I take it its about that then?" She'd look up from the files to see Maya in that more relaxed pose and... Yeah, now that she really thought about, Maya really wasn't looking the type.
"And, you know, I'm pretty sure you have a good bit of vacation days piled up. With summer coming around soon, I was actually thinking about requesting a few days at the resort we found last year with Counters and a few others."
"No, nothing like that. Just that... there's a lot I haven't told people because it's never really been relevant. But... I think I need to at least talk about it with someone." Taking a seat, Maya lets one of her arms rest, palm facing up, as she slowly flexes her fingers. She's never really talked about her past, after all; about her life before arriving on this version of Earth (she refuses to believe this is the future of her world) and how she feels about... well, everything.
"You already know about my... physical state, I'm sure. How I can't push myself too hard or else I risk permanently injuring myself. I'm pretty sure it's in my file." Of course, Maya would believe if nobody actually took that at face value; after all, she didn't move or act like a woman on the verge of being crippled. In fact, much of the time, she seemed perfectly healthy. She never needed days off to rest or recover, so it was a mystery to pretty much everyone at the Outpost just as to what that limitation of hers entailed. Even now, she had one leg swung over the other and was sitting quite casually, despite the supposed risk her body was in.

[steps up to the mic] Listen, this might just be me, but if you’re going to have a large cast of “main” characters, you should probably give those characters opportunities to display their skills and foils instead of handing it off to the “real” main character.
Obviously, this could probably speak to a lot of fandoms, but I’m just gonna talk about The Mighty Ducks for a second because that’s what inspired this train of thought.
A bit of a rant (analysis?) below the cut:
When we look at the movies, I think the original, as well as D2, handled their large cast pretty well. Sure, it was kind of strange not seeing Karp, Peter, Terry, and Tammy/Tommy in the D2 cast, but they seemed to fill their absence decently with the new additions. (Of course, that’s just my own opinion.)
D3’s where my real gripe is, and while I have yet to rewatch it, there are still a few issues about the large cast that come to mind. Going from giving Adam good arcs in 1-2 to side-lining him when there was a perfect opportunity right in front of them, setting up a conflict between Guy and Connie with seemingly little payoff, and completely cutting Jesse (an original and arguably very important Duck) out with, as far as I know, little explanation.
I’d like to clarify before I get into this next part that I actually like Linda as a character; she seemed to have a lot of heart and I really admire that. I don’t, however, appreciate the writers creating a female character for the sole purpose of being the love interest to the lead. I really do believe that they could have made a much more compelling coming-of-age story for Charlie had they not implemented that romance, which didn’t seem to add anything to the plot. It really wasn’t Linda who got Charlie to turn around and realise his kinda self-destructive behaviour, but Fulton and Bombay.
They really would have used their time better focusing on solely telling the story of the Ducks’; Charlie’s refusal to change, actually giving us a vague understanding of Connie and Guy’s lovers quarrel, Adam’s feelings of separation from the Ducks. They really did the Ducks dirty with this one, and, hell, they did Linda dirty too. (And, yes, I do understand that D3 was mainly there to wrap up the story, so naturally things were a little messy.)
Which brings me to Game Changers.
Look, I’m not going to subject you all to me nitpicking this show. I will, however, say this: I hope they give the Don’t Bothers/reclaimed Ducks other than Evan a chance to shine. Even Sofi and Nick, despite them arguably being the “second/third” main (younger) characters. Sam, Logan, Maya, Lauren, Koob — even the Capek brothers! — are listed as main characters, but they’re often not as focused on as Evan. I’ve seen someone argue that Sam was set up to be a really interesting character this first season and they didn’t really do much with him other than in Pond Hockey, which was kind of disappointing, and I think that’s an extremely valid point.
I can only really speak for myself when I talk about things I’d like to see if we get a season 2. Like, if they manage to get Joshua Jackson, I’d be pretty happy with a new-captain-meets-the-old-captain moment, but I would much rather see Charlie bond with Logan over absentee parents over Evan. Logan clearly has some unaddressed issues with his mom, clearly more self-aware that what his mom did was unfair to him, and it just furthers his already established arc (but I’ve spoken about that already). I’d like to see Sam’s character get explored more, and maybe see Bombay help him harness his X-factor! I’d like to see Lauren and Maya’s relationship grow, and the Capeks’ gradual journey learning English! Hey, maybe even see the Reddicks join the new Ducks and bond a bit with Evan like Stephanie and Alex did.
That’s what I, personally, would like to see, not Evan getting handed all the potential arcs. Because he pretty much got everything; absent dad, team captain, love interest, choosing between what's good for him versus the team, getting Bombay back onto his feet, etc, etc. Other than maybe Sofi and Nick, everyone else on the team has 1-2 arcs at most, and I think there’s a pretty good argument out there that some get one to none.
And look, I’m not so naïve that I don’t understand that large casts are hard to juggle. It’s difficult to focus on everyone especially when a particular character speaks more to you and especially with a time limit. But take my Logan and Evan point for example; it’s not hard to assume that a bonding-with-Charlie-over-an-absent-parent moment would go to Evan. That’s probably what the GC writers might assume. But if you take a step back, look at the rest of your cast for a moment, you can see that he’s not the only option. It’s all about sharing the wealth of arcs evenly amongst your characters.
(Also, I wanted to quickly include — I believe — @k-romantic’s idea/joke that Julie should’ve been the one to romance Linda purely because I think it adds to my argument of arcs being forced onto the main character when they could’ve easily been better suited for another character. Obviously, since it was the late 1990s and Disney’s a bunch of cowards, maybe they wouldn’t have used Julie, but I think another Duck dating Linda would have done what the writers were going for just as well, maybe even better.)
#is this mostly incoherent? yeah probably#the amount of analysis I have retaining to TMD in my drafts is astounding-#welcome back to Tim’s Terrible Takes I guess-#the mighty ducks#the mighty ducks game changers

Rivera : Chapter 1

Bip. Bip.
Akhirnya, jam kuliahku pun usai. Aku bergegas mengecek notif.
“Lah, ngga mutu dong!” Kirimku dengan emot melet. “Kuliah apa emang?”
“Psikologi Perkembangan” jawabnya.
Dua menit berlalu.
“Nan, inget ngga hari ini hari apa?”
Hari apa memangnya, ya. Masa dia tidak punya kalender. Memangnya, ada yang spesial?
“Kamis. Emang kenapa, Ver?”
“Yela, lu ngga nyadar apa?”
“Ya apaan? Ini malam jumat kliwon, maksud lo?”
“Hari ini tuh tepat tiga tahun kita kenal loh, masa ngga inget?”
Deg.
“Maksud lo, gimana Vera?” Aku megap-megap mencari brankas ingatan.
“Halo, oi niat amat nelpon,”
“Bodo amat.
Meski aku bersemangat, nyatanya aku sempat tersesat.
“Kak, maaf saya telat.. hhmmm, udah mulai ya kak?”
“Oiyaa, ngga apa-apa kok. Emang tadi darimana?”, ujar salah satu perempuan berkerudung merah, ramah.
“Dari Setiabudi, kak. Duh tadi macet parah di Cihampelas, jadi telat deh,” ujarku, beralibi.
“Woo iya deh, hehe.
Ketika aku duduk, masalah belum selesai.
Aku megap-megap. Aku tak punya bahan untuk menjawab. Raut mukaku sudah pias untuk sekedar tersenyum. Meski aku sayup-sayup mendengar pokok pembicaraan, tapi aku belum sepenuhnya siap karena datang dari tengah-tengah acara. Sial.
“Gimana kak, bisa diulangi pertanyaannya?” Refleks aku berdiri.
“Hehe. Baru dateng ya? Ngga apa-apa, duduk aja gausah berdiri,”
Kontan, aku mendengar seisi ruangan tertawa. Gerr. Aku merasa diospek karena keterlambatanku.
“Namanya siapa, kang?”
“Rinan,”
“Oke.
Entah kenapa, aku menjawabnya semudah sepoi angin. Apakah karena aku menjiwai pertanyaan ini? Entah.
Aku tersenyum. Rinan, you making a best clearance, today.
----
Sekarang sesi istirahat shalat.
“Hai Rinan,”
Aku tergagap. Perempuan yang tadi.
“Hai teh, eh kak,”
“Haha, jangan panggil kak lah. Aku Astarivera, panggil aja Rivera” ucapnya, sambil menjulurkan tangan. Aku tergopoh menyambutnya.
“Halo, aku Adrinandi. Dipanggil Rinan,”
“Tadi macet emang, sampe telat?” Ujarnya menekuri tas bawaanku yang besar penuh diktat kuliah. “Baru balik ngampus ya?”
“Hooh, makanya tadi buru-buru juga. Setiabudi ke Cihampelasnya yang stuck banget hehe. Kelasnya kelar jam setengah tiga, langsung cus.”
“Eh iya? Gue juga dari Setiabudi. Elo anak UP juga? Jurusan apa, angkatan berapa? Ujarnya antusias bak bertemu teman baru.
“2014. Teknik Industri,” ujarku. “Cuma di UPS, bukan di UP,”
“Oalaaah. UPS toh. Seangkatan dong kita, gue juga 2014 kali,”
“Wah. Aku kira kamu lebih tua loh. Keliatannya gitu banget tadi, kaya yang udah jadi narsum sastra banget,”
“Bisa aja lu, haha. Gue anak psikologi kok, bukan sastra,”
“Asli Bandung?”
“Ngga. Gue dari Jakarta. Baru pindah ke Bandung pas kuliah,”
I see. Logatnya memang tak ada sentuhan bahasa Sunda sama sekali.
“Kamu yang punya akun tumblr menulisdiri, bukan?” ujarku, sambil iseng mencopot kaus kaki.
“Yupp benar banget,” Ia tertawa lebar. “Kok tau?”
“Ih aku udah follow kamu udah lama, tauk. Keren lah, hari ini aku beneran ngobrol ama seleb Tumblr, haha”
“Biasa aja kali, haha. Seleb mah kata orang doang, selebihnya gue sih cuma amatiran pada umumnya,”
Aku menggeleng.

“Iyap bener. Sok aja, gue non-muslim soalnya,”
“Oh iya?” aku terkaget, tapi langsung memaklumi dengan sendirinya. “Pantes,”
Tanpa sadar aku mengucapkan kata itu. Sialan! Aku mencoba tergelak.
Senyumnya tipis. “Udah solat dulu aja sana, Nan.”
Wajahku entah kenapa memerah.
---
Entah mungkin cuma feelingku saja.
Sesi makanpun selesai tanpa banyak kesan. Untungnya, adzan maghrib hari itu datang cepat, sehingga melepaskan aku dari segala bentuk kekakuan.
----
Hampir semua sudah shalat. Sesi terakhir pun dimulai.
“Oke, sistemnya mau gimana nih?”, tanya Teh Dewi.
Sejenak suasana hening. Belum ada lagi icebreaker.
“Pake cara kedua aja kang, setuju ama cara si teteh.
Pake cara kedua, setuju semua?” simpul Kang Arya.
“Setujuuu...” semuanya kompak bagai koor.
Pembagian kado pun dimulai.
Eh tapi... mana kadoku tadi?
“Udah megang kado semuanya?
Disana-sini timbul kegaduhan.
Beberapa orang mengacungkan tangan.
“Aneh aja sih, hahaha. Tadi pagi saya kepengen banget beli jepitan rambut, eh malah dapet sekarang gratisan. Padahal, cuma sekelewat doang pengennya eh langsung dikabulin. Aneh, soalnya jarang sih kejadian kaya gini,” ujarnya tertawa.
Deg.
“Hai, mau langsung pulang?” Pekik Rivera dari kejauhan. Mendekatiku, dengan menggelung rambut sebahunya.
“Eh hai, iya nih, mau langsung kayanya.”
“Pulang kemana?”
“Ujungberung nih. Kamu?”
“Ooh aku ke kosan sih, daerah Maranatha. Tadinya mau bareng kamu kalo searah, hehe.”
“Aduh, sayangnya ngga. Gimana dong?”
“Oh, yaudah. Selo aja. Tiati di jalan ya,”
Ketika ia membalikkan badan, aku seketika teringat dan spontan bertanya.
“Eh, kamu yang tadi dapet jepit rambut kan?”
“Iya haha,” ujarnya, sambil mengaduk-aduk tas kecilnya. “Lucu sih. Gue simpen aja ntar.
Haha. Kok... bisa.. ya.. tadi denger kan tadi gue kepengen banget punya jepitan rambut pagi ini,”
“Iya, denger kok. Tapi masa iya sih?”
“Iyaa beneran,” Ia tertawa lebar.
Semesta memang berkonspirasi kali ini. Sejenak aku masuk dalam fase canggung. Tenggelam pada senyumnya yang manis.
“Kok kebetulan banget gini yah? Haha.”
“Percaya ini cuma kebetulan? “ Ujarnya.
Aku terdiam.
“Hehe, gatau ah, iya kali. Yaudah, kalo gitu aku pulang duluan,” ujarku, sembari mengenakan helm, “Makasih Ver, buat hari ini,”
“Eh, apaan sih, Nan?” ujarnya salah tingkah.
“Maksudku, makasih udah jadi panitia acara ini, haha. Makasih buat sharingnya tadi yang bagus banget, gituu” balasku terkekeh.
“Oooh gitu, iyaa hehe. Sama-sama. Makasih juga udah dateng,”
“Okaay, sama-sama Vera. Kamu hati-hati baliknya,”
Aku berlalu dengan kecepatan standar. Beberapa detik kusadari lewat spionku, kalau Rivera sempat melambaikan tangan dan berdiri diam tidak bergerak. Seperti menunggu, sembari mengawasi jalanku.
“Hahahaha......... lu kaku banget, anjir. Gue geli pas elu ngomong aku kamu, hiiih,”
“Bego nya, gue ampe lupa minta nomer hape lu, Ver. Malah gue inget pas lagi di jalan pulang,” ujarku terkekeh.
“Tapi ah... akhirnya kan kontakan juga,” suaranya terdengar bersungut. “Nah, lo udah inget semua kan, Nan? Betapa spesialnya hari ini dua tahun lalu?”
“Iya nan, gue inget kok. Parah banget sih, lucuk, coincidence-nya,”
Aku mendengar Rivera mendeham panjang. Kata “spesial” yang menurutku belum memberikan definisi apa-apa.
“Nan, masih ngira kalau itu coincidence?”
Aku lagi-lagi terdiam.
“Hahaha, gue pikir sih ngga, Ver. Pasti ada sebab musababnya,”
Iya ver, mungkin.
“Aelah, basi. macem Mario Teguh aja lu, hahahaha,”
“Hahaha dasar lu, hmmm,”
Sejenak ada waktu untukku bungkam. Merapal memori, sekaligus mengatur riak-riak perasaan yang kadang mengganggu.
“Oi, dosen lu udah masuk belum?” Ujarku, memecahkan suasana.
“Belum, Nan. Sekitar 10 menitan lagi kali,”
“Woo yaudah, gue mau makan siang dulu ye. Lu kuliah aja yang bener, susah masuk negeri tau ngga,”
“Bawel. Iyadeh. Yaudah ya Nan, gue kuliah dulu,”
“Iyee, iyee. Dah yaa. Bye, Astari,”
“Bye, Adri..”
Telepon ditutup dengan degup yang lagi-lagi berbeda.
...

How to beat Roy Moore
The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro’s Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races — and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day’s most important campaign news sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo)
DAILY ROLL TIDE — “How to beat Roy Moore, according to the guy who nearly did,” by Campaign Pro’s Daniel Strauss: “Democrats haven’t won a statewide election in Alabama in almost a decade. But in 2012, one Democrat almost pulled it off: Bob Vance, a mild-mannered circuit court judge from Birmingham who came within 4 points of beating none other than Roy Moore. Now Democrats are looking back at that state Supreme Court contest for clues on how their Senate nominee, former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones, might improve slightly upon Vance’s performance and stage a special election upset in a state long seen as out of reach to the party. … ‘He’s very divisive even within the Republican Party,’ Vance said of Moore. ‘That’s why I agreed to run against him.’ He added: ‘I knew there were a lot of establishment Republicans who couldn’t stomach Roy Moore.'” Full story.
Story Continued Below
— “Alabama secretary of state gets pro-Jones digital ad pulled,” by Strauss: “An ad produced by the pro-Doug Jones super PAC Highway 31 has been removed from YouTube after Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill’s office decided the spot included ‘incorrect or inaccurate information intent on confusing voters.’ … In a statement, the secretary of state’s office said: ‘Reports from several sources indicate a targeted effort to misinform and confuse voters regarding whether an individual’s voting record would be available to the public. No individual voting record is made available to anyone at anytime, including the voter who cast the ballot.'” The ad can be viewed here. Full story.
On Thursday afternoon, Highway 31 Executive Director Adam Muhlendorf released a statement: “We are in contact with Google to ensure the ad runs through Election Day. The fact of the matter remains that John Merrill is inferring an intent that is simply not true.”
— A new ad from Jones’ campaign pushes back on attacks from Moore’s campaign that the former U.S. attorney is against “strong borders and a secure military.” The new 30-second ad also says Moore is lying about Jones’ position on abortion.
RETIREMENT WATCH — “Rep. Trent Franks to resign after discussing surrogacy with female staffers,” by POLITICO’s Rachael Bade, Kyle Cheney, and Elena Schneider: “Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) announced Thursday that he would resign from office as of Jan. 31, 2018, after discussing surrogacy issues with female staffers. ‘I have recently learned that the Ethics Committee is reviewing an inquiry regarding my discussion of surrogacy with two previous female subordinates, making each feel uncomfortable,’ he said in a statement. ‘I deeply regret that my discussion of this option and process in the workplace caused distress.’ … Franks is the third lawmaker to announce plans to resign this week as the furor over sexual misconduct and harassment sweeps Capitol Hill. He will be the first Republican to vacate his post amid the growing scandal.” Full story.
— IN MINNESOTA — “Franken resigns,” by POLITICO’s Elana Schor and Seung Min Kim: “Sen. Al Franken said on Thursday that he would resign after seven women came forward in recent weeks and said he groped or tried to forcibly kiss them, capping a stunning fall from grace for one of the Democratic Party’s most popular and high-profile politicians. … ‘I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party,’ Franken said.” Full story.
— “Sen. Al Franken to leave U.S. Senate, says he can no longer be effective,” by The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Jennifer Brooks and Maya Rao: Gov. Mark Dayton “is expected to appoint a replacement soon. A Democratic source told the Star Tribune that Dayton is likely to appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, and that she is not expected to run in the special election. But other ambitious [members of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party] are likely to be interested or at least be considered. In a statement issued after Franken’s speech, Dayton said, ‘I expect to make and announce my decision in the next couple days.'” Full story.
— IN NEVADA — “Democrat Kihuen hanging on despite harassment claim,” by POLITICO’s Heather Caygle: “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi won’t call for a primary challenger to take on Nevada Rep. Ruben Kihuen, despite saying the freshman Democrat should resign due to sexual harassment allegations. ‘This is not about politics. That’s the last thing this is about,’ Pelosi said Thursday in response to questions about Kihuen, who has refused demands from party leaders to step down. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee did not respond to requests for comment on whether it would fund a primary challenger against Kihuen. The campaign arm has, however, removed Kihuen from its ‘Frontline’ program, which prioritizes funding for vulnerable members.” Full story.
— Former Rep. Cresent Hardy reconsidering another run for NV-04, by the Nevada Independent’s Luz Gray: Hardy, a Republican, “says he’s considering running for the Nevada congressional seat he lost last year to embattled Democratic Rep. Ruben Kihuen, who’s facing an allegation of sexual harassment and calls to resign. Hardy told The Nevada Independent on Wednesday that people are continuing to ‘push me very hard to reconsider’ his decision, announced in July, that he wouldn’t run in the 2018 election cycle.” Full story.
Days until the 2018 election: 333

IT’S OFFICIAL — “Bredesen makes Senate bid official,” by Campaign Pro’s Kevin Robillard: “Former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen is running for U.S. Senate, he announced [Thursday]. Bredesen’s entrance into the race makes Tennessee a potential top-tier Senate contest in 2018. He’ll face Army veteran James Mackler for the Democratic nomination. Rep. Marsha Blackburn and former Rep. Stephen Fincher are competing for the GOP nomination.” Full story.
— Following Bredesen’s decision to jump into the Democratic primary, the opposition research group American Bridge is starting to aggressively focus on the state. The group is planning to put a tracker on Blackburn and already has almost 100 hours of footage and over 1,600 pages of research on her, per Bridge spokesman Josh Karp.
DEMS ON FRANKEN — “Why Democrats had to dump Franken,” by POLITICO’s Edward-Isaac Dovere: “A year into Donald Trump’s presidency, many voters still don’t know what Democrats stand for — so at the very least, party leaders reluctantly decided, they better take a stand against sexual harassment. Especially when they’re going to need a huge turnout among women to do what now still seems like a reach, but six months ago seemed impossible: flip the House and maybe even the Senate, and rally in races for governor and state legislature across the country next year. … Beyond the White House’s dismissal of the women who’d gone public with accusations against Trump, Democratic leaders know that within a week, they’re likely to have a Senate without Franken but including Roy Moore, despite allegations of preying on children and being banned from a mall over his alleged pursuit of teenage girls.” Full story.
COWBOY STATE DEMOCRAT — Businessman Gary Trauner, a Democrat, is running for Senate in Wyoming. In his announcement video Trauner stresses the importance of “getting big money out of politics.” Watch the video here. Trauner is hoping to beat Sen. John Barrasso.
REMEMBER GILMORE? — “Anybody but Corey Stewart? Virginia GOP looks for others to run against Sen. Kaine,” by The Washington Post’s Jenna Portnoy and Laura Vozzella: “As Virginia Republicans gather Friday for their annual retreat, party leaders are alarmed at the possibility of fielding Corey Stewart as next year’s U.S. Senate nominee, and with help from the national GOP, they are maneuvering to recruit someone else to be the face of the party. … Sen. Cory Gardner (Colo.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, recently summoned former Gov. James S. Gilmore III to Washington to ask him to run, while Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Mike Lee (Utah) met with Del. Nick Freitas (Culpeper) to advise him on a likely campaign.” Full story.
RSLC MEMO — A new memo from the Republican State Leadership Committee pushes back on the argument that Democrats have the wind at their backs in state-level elections: “Lost in the Democrat catharsis of Nov. 7 statewide wins in New Jersey and Virginia and its aftermath have been several notable Republican state-level wins. … Just this week, Republican Sen.-Elect Dean Tran, flipped a seat in Massachusetts that had been Democrat-held since 1974. In fact, Democrats’ narrowest margin of victory during that time was 18 percent. Both President [Barack] Obama and Hillary Clinton carried the district in recent presidential elections. Tran will become the only Vietnamese-American in the Massachusetts Legislature and marks the 11th newly elected Republican state legislator this year identified through either the RSLC’s Future Majority Project, which supports candidates from diverse communities like Tran, or our Right Women, Right Now initiative that supports new female Republican candidates for office.” Full memo here.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The establishment that’s supporting Pritzker wants us to not worry about Pritzker’s electability” in a general election. — Illinois state Sen. Daniel Biss on Democratic gubernatorial rival J.B. Pritzker

Pritzker
