Woke up to a text from my uncle today that reminded me of a fad that swept Canada back when we had paper bills.
Tumblr media
It was called spocking and it was the practice of taking a five dollar bill and turning Wilfred Laurier into Spock with a ballpoint pen. I don’t know who did it first, but someone realized that the Canadian prime minister during World War One looked like Leonard Nimoy if you held your head right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Best part is that these Spock’d bills were still legal tender. Everyone seemed to love it except of course for the mint and the bank of Canada. There were also some general population narcs who found it to be disrespectful towards the long dead prime minister. However, nerds and people with good senses of humour liked it, and Spocking reached a high watermark shortly after we got our new fives as a tribute to the beloved character after Nimoy’s death in 2015. By that point, I’d been Spocking bills for a while, so any paper five I came into contact with; you best know I was Spocking.
The new fives were a little harder to Spock, given that they were made of plastic and Laurier looked a little less like Leonard Nimoy in the picture they used.
Tumblr media
As you can see, it’s not quite right, so as paper fives slowly left circulation, as did Spocking. It’s a unique, fun moment in Canadian history that I thought was worth sharing.
ADDITION: I found this post in my drafts today and it was a total gut punch because my uncle I talked about in the beginning of this post passed away tragically a few days ago. I toyed with not posting this Goon’s Heritage Moment, but I’ve obviously decided to post it.
I visited my uncle when I was a young teenager and I had a paper five dollar bill in my possession. I excitedly turned it into Spock, much to my uncle’s amusement, and he paid me ten dollars for it after I was done. I found out about a month ago that my uncle had the bill I Spocked in his wallet for nearly ten years, and he loved showing it to people. Closer to the end of is life, he put it up so he could always see it. I feel it’s only appropriate for me to post this fun piece of Canadiana to honour his memory. I know that my Spocked five dollar bill brought him joy on his harder days, so I hope this story can bring you all a bit of joy. If anything, text someone you love today to let them know what you’re up to and how much you love them. A text like that can mean more than you’ll ever know.
Live long and prosper, gang: that’s an order. If not for me, for my uncle Jonathan.

I realized I never posted these updates for Lumi, working in the Shinra lounge Cafe and smooching her mans (they also like to talk about dismantling Shinra; that's how he got her attention; he's just louder about it than she is)

nobody has ever cooked as hard as rb with the denim vcarb, if it was anybody other than the combination of daniel and yuki in those cars it would be an abomination, but it's not, it's our western fashion kings, and nobody is doing it like them

||. finally going to bed thinking about lore - keeper asgardians . thinking about how intelligence and wisdom are one of their favored traits. thinking about how thor is the best of every asgardian ideal . thinking about how he is wise . thinking about his street - smarts . thinking about how he is also knowledgeable in legends , lore , and folktale. he is adaptable . he takes this knowledge , adapts to it , and crafts himself into something stronger. he is ever growing , and one of those ways is how he seeks out knowledge , and knows well to keep a sharp mind on the tales told by word of mouth or written on a page.
#(ik loki is book - smart and all that and good for him)#(i think it's clear that thor absolutely relies on loki to have increasingly /niche/ knowledge about things esp where magic is concerned)#(but i don't think he relies solely on loki to obtain and retain that knowledge. because thor also seeks it out.)#(in the first film /he/ is the one to educate jane - an astrophysicist - on the truth of the nine realms. he's able to TEACH HER-)#(-about the alien world she truly lives in. that was all him.)#(in TDW it's shown that heimdall taught thor about the convergence himself and that thor was very knowledgeable about how it works)#(in that same film he's shown to have a deep understanding of asgardian history - taught by odin himself in some respects.)#(he's ALSO very familiar with the hall of knowledge where the tree is and commends jane for picking it up so fast.)#(he's /also/ able to instantly deduce that what is hurting jane is foreign to earth. aka alien. aka something cosmic like HIM)#(i can't remember off the top of my head how they narrow it down to the aether but he was clearly already on its trail)#(and that's just /his movies/.)#(in avengers 1 he's instantly able to tell that there's a bigger foe at play behind loki's attempted siege of earth.)#(he's also the one to have extensive personal knowledge of the infinity stones in avengers 2)#(anyways all of this to say is that thor is INCREDIBLY intelligent and nobody gives him credit for that and it makes me mad.)#(just because he doesn't talk about it the way someone like tony stark or bruce banner do doesn't mean he's not right up there with them-)#(-and honestly probably /surpasses/ them bc he's so friggin old and literally alien.)#(but he lets them do their thing and only corrects them when they actually need it bc he LIKES to see them learn and be smart and cool)#(that's their thing!! good on them. he loves to see his human friends thriving. eveniftoasgarditsrudimentaryasallhell)#(anyways thor is smart and yes this includes book smarts and i WILL throw hands about this.)#( ooc . ) — stories that leap from the page .#( headcanon . ) — glory to the man who toils for his land . may it ever prosper .#(not even hc tbh it's just fact)

Today is Lee Gilyoung's birthday and I am thinking about the parallels between him and Dokja. And not just how Dokja sees his younger self in Gilyoung and not just how he treats him compared to how he treats his younger self (ie: OD). I'm thinking about what his wall is meant to represent. When his sponsor was introduced, orv makes a point to emphasise that there is no actual reason why abaddon was deemed the most primordial evil, or that information has been lost through time. Thinking about Gilyoung, a child, treated as such by his companions, constantly affirming that he's not to blame for anything, and his proximity to the Absolute Evil. Can a child even be considered good or evil? Can a child ever be held responsible for committing such a grave sin? Is this Kdj's way of absolving his own sins? Would the world perhaps have been nicer to little dokja like how gilyoung is treated by kimcom? Gilyoung exists as a reaffirmation to Dokja that there was never anything wrong with loving a novel so much, several worlds were sacrificed for it, he exists to show that he's not entirely to blame for killing an abuser through an act of self-defence and love.

✨🌙 Ramadan 2024🌙✨
✨Ramadan Kareem✨
Ramadan is coming up in a day or two (depending on moon sighting/time zones), so I wanted to announce that if you are practicing please filter the tag “deflowered” 🙏🌺☺️
I’ll try my best to tag appropriately what may be suggestive/mature/things that might break fasting but I can’t make promises (since it depends on the person in what they believe breaks their Roza/fast).
You can also find other tags you want to filter here.
As always, I can’t promise to tag everything and can’t say my blog is safe to those who are fasting, but I’ll try my best when I can remember to. 🌙☺️🌺
Happy Ramadan to Everyone 🤲🌙💞
✨Ramadan Mubarak✨

Sweetgrove: Worship & Burial Practices
Sweetgrove has no sept of it’s own. When Dayrn Malus and his sons began laying the foundations for the castle the choice was made to not build a sept on the grounds despite his conversion to the Faith of the Seven. During the construction Dayrn had grown accustomed to traveling to the nearest town to attend the sept there. Newly titled Dayrn did not see himself as so lordly that he could not mingle with the smallfolk. He saw the virtue in sharing a common space with them as he acclimated to the new land and they to him. Over generations this developed into a slightly more informal moment to approach the ruling lord for inquiries or complaints.
To this day House Malus has no sept of their own and share the common sept with their people, much to the displeasure of the late Lady Esther. Lord Douglas is known to be somewhat unorthodox in his faith, only attending during holidays or during moments of crisis. He often jest that he can pray as well outside as he can in the sept. When his wife was at the sept Douglas was more like to be about managing the lands.
In contrast, Sweetgrove, as all houses of note do, has a godswood. Being a relatively new castle, the godswood has no weirwood, instead an apple tree serves as the heart tree. Instead of crypts the Malus' believe in a return of the body to the land, laying their dead to rest in graves adjacent to the godswood, mingling worship with mourning. Funerary statues are often erected on top of the graves to honor the deceased and give mourners a place to grieve.
The godswood is known as the Still Grove, as the fruit of the heart tree as well as any surrounding trees are not harvested. Instead they are allowed to fall and rot in honor of the nearby dead. Though the fruit isn't harvested, it's rumored that the unique apple grown in Sweetgrove is derived from the heart tree's fruit.
While it's traditional for those who marry into House Malus to be buried in the godswood's grounds, some choose to have alternative funeral arrangements made. When Lady Esther passed, in accordance to her wishes, she was instead laid to rest in the Cuy crypts of Sunhouse with her ancestors.

loving this... may we maintain our flexibility so our minds can be like ant man, and just inhabit the realm that's appropriate to the situation, sometimes we must discuss people and our mind must be small; sometimes our minds must discuss events, and our minds must be medium sized; sometimes, and necessarily at many times, our minds absolutely must discuss ideas and be exploring the realms of greatness on the frontier of our collective understanding.
