So, this was it! Finally, the ninjas joined the lords (and Saizo) in a knock-down, no-holds-barred, all-out battle! I don't play the Japanese versions, but my understanding is this is a first for the franchise - and it felt like it. Bugs, confusion, and really good prizes abounded. SLBP has never been more interesting or nerve-wracking.

First, let's talk about those prizes. Most of them were really good, as befitting such a historic BE. And if the next BE mixes the clans up (as I think it should), this'll be the only time for a while when you could get thematically and regionally linked characters together fairly easily.

Road to Victory Prizes I liked these! They were very cute and different from what I've already got in my box (caveat: I started playing early this summer). I especially liked the foxes, and the butterflies are a cute touch of whimsy. I doubt how much use most of them will be with indoor backgrounds, but I'm always down for cute and different.

Loyalty/Serving Prizes Birds: Boooooring. I'm tired of recolors of random objects that I can't bring myself to get rid of because they were BE prizes. When do we get items with personality to them again, like the rain ghosts? Plus, they can't fly very high because they're not wall objects.

They can be secondary samurai, they have cute sayings, and (favorite aspect) even characters like Mitsunari who usually frown are smiling (Mitsunari is still a smug-looking little bastard, though). The outfits don’t vary by character (just recolors for each lord/ninja), but the other qualities make up for it. Plus, we got both the lords and the ninjas!

I was disappointed there were no story/letter prizes, but given how fierce the competition already was adding another reason for people to aim for completion was probably not in the cards. Still, I like story prizes the best and hope we get them for the next BE.

Ranking Prizes Overall ranking: The dress was interesting with the new pose and the warning about non-compatibility was funny (dress may not work with literally anything). Not the best BE dress prize, but not bad at all. The hair is very nice (though it comes with a non-removable bow) and the make-up generic. Plus, there was a preview all button so you could see how the whole outfit would look on your character.

Clan ranking: Okay, these were especially interesting and what really made the battle so fierce. TWO chibis per character and they can be used as secondary samurai and they interact and you could get a regional set! But, you had to serve that clan and rank high enough. Not too bad if you prioritized just one clan or wanted characters on the losing teams (especially Yellow), but very tricky if you wanted to go for multiple clan sets. God help you if you went for both Hotaru and Saizo.

New Rules See here and here. There was no additional explanation of this battle's rules despite it differing significantly from previous ones. And during betrayal we learned there was no way to go from a losing clan to a losing clan or a winning clan to a winning clan - you had to include an extra betrayal to go from, say, Blue to Red, which of course cost pearls.

That said, most of the rules, once I figured them out, were just fine. Like, betrayal only netting you triple fever going from winning to losing. That was fine - once I understood it. (I usually only betray once per battle event so the point has never come up for me before and the betrayal page says "every time you switch.")

I'm torn as to how I feel about the cost of betrayal. You still get one for free, and it's pretty cheap to do a few, but serving everyone now costs a minimum of 6 pearls, assuming you started on a winning clan. And unless your ending losing clan becomes a winning clan you'd need another 3 pearls to get the winning side prizes.

On the other hand, the higher cost gives an edge to anyone willing to commit to just one character, which is handy for newbies and those who have a very strong bias. That's not the worst thing in the world. And with 18 characters, is it still reasonable to expect to be able to serve everyone in every event? Possibly not.

As long as the rules are crystal-clear in the future and explained before you choose your starting clan, I think they're fine. But the way they were handled in this event was incredibly poor.

Strategy For once, you actually had to have a strategy beyond just trying to start on the winning clan. And, you had to wait to execute that strategy for the best chance of success. You didn't want to jump ship before you'd assured yourself of your rank, but you also didn't want to spend more items then you had to.

The obvious strategy was to wait as long as possible before betraying. Waiting before you push a button ought to be easy, but it was haaaaard and I jumped the gun on all of my betrayals. Whoops.

In the future, if Voltage keeps this format (and I'm guessing they will based on how hard people went for the prizes), I'd like to see the clans mixed up a lot more. Give each clan one of the top 6 characters, one of the middle 6, and one of the bottom 6, then see how it goes. It  would make it much harder to predict which clans end up on top and make betrayal more interesting (...and stressful).

Note to future!self: Any ranking prior to betrayal should NOT BE TRUSTED. Just because you have T300 in Blue doesn't mean you can waltz back in 12 hours prior to event end and think you can get anything other than a lace dress.

Incidentally, this was the first time I had trouble overall ranking T300 (and ultimately didn’t even get T500). Every other BE since July I've placed T300 as long as I tried. People were clearly going all out for the chibis. Plus, there was the effect of having 18 characters instead of 12. If you usually only serve 2 characters and your competition usually serves 2, but this event they decide to serve 4 because ninjas, well, you're down farther than usual.

Errors The game sometimes got a little stuck after serving and you had to jump the home page or your castle or somewhere and then back to the battle to see your results. Not a major problem, but irritating if you were carefully serving calculated increments.

Speaking of the results screen, I have no idea what it thought my rank was. The number was always low and never matched anything else - not my character rank, my clan rank, my overall rank, how many times I'd served, nothing. Weird. Voltage, please fix.

I promised I would keep things less heady this morning which is always a challenge.  I still wake up every morning at around four or five out of routine.  Most of what I’ve been doing since August has been reorganizing money and untangling things from my previous life.  I had both a severance and a payout on a pension from my previous job.  It was a hard cutoff and probably the most diplomatic time to get rid of me.  I spent a lot of time feeling like a failure.  Then I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I was going to do.  When Monday rolls around the city fully expects us all to do nothing for another thirty days.  I’m not really one to complain although you hear me grumble every Saturday morning like clockwork.  I save most of my emotional output for this blog.  I can say with good faith nobody talks to me this deeply at all.  I’m not on Facebook or Instagram anymore.  I am on LinkedIn more than I’d care to be but nobody ever reaches out other than Bitcoin scammers trying to get me to divest from Nio.  The last one being Andre Bobby.  They introduced themselves as Bobby Andre.  I greeted Andre and subsequently blocked them.  I’m often invited to the same discussions from the news team.  Always about the future of Higher Education and online learning.  Sometimes to the same thread.  I’ve long since ignored everything except jobs posted I’d be interested in over there in China.  From everything I have had to read into, I’ve learned that March is probably the soonest anyone of worth would be hiring.  This is reinforced by conversations with my dad who is admittedly just as much as a workaholic as myself.  I spent twenty years working for something I thought I was part of.  And it just seems like my work was never valued at all.  And the less depressed I got about it, the more I started to explore the reasons why.  I had a thick ass book delivered to me annotating the various financial holdings of what consisted of my share of a pension.  A pension these days is like an ancient relic.  One that many companies find too heavy on their books along with other benefits like health insurance or other basic needs for human survival.  When I started at an art school, the benefits were what were lauded the most.  I had over thirty days of paid vacation.  I spent a period of seven years from 2011 travelling by myself to Korea.  Towards the end of my travel, I had been itching to network for something else.  I felt stagnant in my job.  I spent over twelve years in the same job title drowning in the responsibilities of middle management.  My boss often never showed up to work.  Towards the end, they’d never show up to meetings.  They’d be offsite with an employee of mine making music in a garage.  When the news hit me the Thursday before the fourth of July holiday, it felt targeted and mean.  There was a great alibi, a piece of paper to sign absolving all wrongdoing in exchange for a severance and a health insurance extension and a lot of hurt.  A recruiter reached out the day before my health insurance responsibilities switched over.  My payments per month are about as much as my rent.  I had accepted the highest level insurance through open enrollment about a month before I was let go.  It’s all been pretty heady ever since.  Mostly because somehow I still managed to act like it didn’t even affect me.  Although nobody ever reached out an acknowledged how bad it looks in retrospect.  Nobody reaches out at all other than to punk me into selling stocks while I walk to the grocery store.  I did own a car once.  Now I’m just a target by activist investors and their Qanon buddies.  A step up from the Proud Boys I guess.  But who am I really after all of this?  

Nobody can tell for sure.  I’ve shared everything I could ever possibly feel in my writing week after week.  I’ve had bits and pieces of it lifted and used as actionable intelligence to bully me in public.  Everybody seems to know my business and sometimes I wonder if it really fucking matters.  You can bare your soul to people and they’ll stare right through the gaping hole and laugh.  Mostly because they see how empty they are themselves.  It’s an uncanny valley effect to look in my eyes these days.  People can talk all the shit they want about what theories they have but they’re afraid to face the truth.  That I’ve never really been anything other than genuine.  And America is so desperate to prove you wrong.  To prove how much better it is at everything.  I noticed this a lot with gaming particularly when I would play magic in public with people.  I always build decks at my kitchen table alone for fun.  I love the logic.  I will try unorthodox strategies just to learn through failure.  And I would fail year after year playing against people who literally would define their decks by a monetary value other than a strategic one.  I used to read the Tarot.  I love the idea of randomness.  You buy a pack and you have to work with what you have.  If you’ve ever gone to a prerelease, you know the feeling.  You get a box and you have thirty minutes to draft a deck on the fly with what you have.  You learn the economy of the cards and the existence of rules.  When you win, it’s a special feeling of accomplishment.  You did it yourself and the playing field was level and fair.  And then you sit around with a bunch of loud mouth know it all’s who crush you and laugh about it.  All the while the game’s fun fades into a lecture of mansplaining.  Nowhere does this tendency reel it’s ugly head than in the pundits and the stock markets.  Men telling you what’s best to do with your money.  Men with agendas so blatant it bleeds through the semi annual reports I sift through looking at investment ecosystems of days gone by.  Real estate is a pretty funny one to look at in COVID-19 times.  Nobody feels safe in the office.  Deutschbank recently turned heads saying that people working from home making a paltry sum of 55,000 should pay a tax.  The same week Ken Grfifin spent millions of dollars assaulting a fair tax amendment which died a quiet death.  Real estate sits empty in large droves downtown these days.  Chicago enters another stay at home order Monday which is somewhat of a relief for me.  It’s basically thirty days of respite from people wondering what I’m doing with my time.  Meanwhile we are lectured that we are supposed to save the economy by spending our money eating out instead of enjoying cooking your own meal in the kitchen.  This is incidentally why I like going to to grocery store.  Nobody ever asked but I was anorexic in high school.  I loved coca cola when i was little.  I used to drink too much of it and got a small belly.  When I was twelve American kids used to make fun of my weight.  I was a harsh critic.  I still am.  And I tried to fix it by starving myself.  I promised I wouldn’t get heavy.  I never promised I wouldn’t stay real.  No one would ever know these intimate secrets about me if they didn’t read.  And yet there’s people out there who will lift those very words to figure out a new attack on me.  You’ve got to wonder if I’m so transparent what other people are hiding under the surface if they’re so much more successful than I.

The truth is that I stay down here and write because I’ve found friends to connect with.  It may have not always been the most obvious or personal way to maintain contact.  But nowadays what else do we really have?  A bunch of people who speak through money instead of emotion.  People who assign value and compare each other based on speculation rather than connection.  I often feel like nobody knows what I’m worth.  This is perverse to watch as my bank reports my net worth rising when I spent so many years in debt.  And yet every day I go out in society people follow me around and talk so much about me but never to my face.  Are they scared to find out who I really am?  Are they trying to figure out what makes me so special?  Do they ever succeed?  No.  Things just end up sucking even more.  When the rules change and cheating doesn’t pan out anymore, they figure out more ways to be corrupt.  New ways to target you and intimidate.  New ways to control who you think you are.  All the while advertising this country as the freest place on Earth.  I don’t feel free.  I feel trapped, isolated and caged.  Mostly now for my protection granted.  Which is important to note that the only one keeping me safe is myself.  Nobody really has done me any favors.  It’s been a fucking insult to live out since the summer.  And yet, I still have to keep my shit together.  I have to be there for myself emotionally.  I need to feed ecosystems that I feel a part of.  And we all do this in varying ways seeking connection.  When I come to Tumblr, there isn’t some huge expectation that any of this does anything other than share my feelings.  Are my feelings valued?  Here, yes they are.  Sometimes they are valued in ways that I cannot betray or explain.  And there’s a sort of sacred intimacy to that I have never experienced in my life.  I wonder sometimes how people think they’ll ever fall in love if they can’t feel it.  Love is much more complex than the sum of it’s parts we’ve melted it down to to market back and sell at a cut rate.  Love is supposed to transcend, renew and replenish the soul to keep on existing.  Love isn’t a dividend in your stock portfolio or a cadre of late night trysts that haunt you and demand attention.  Love is a lingering spirit in the dark leading you towards a light.  Sometimes you fear being hurt again.  Sometimes you fear the change.  Sometimes you are excited and afraid.  But love never rushes.  Love never is easy.  Love is never right out there in front of your face demanding affirmation every moment of the day without anything in return.  Love doesn’t forget you and leave you alone in the dark crying for some sort of purpose.  Love isn’t a waste of fucking time.  Patience isn’t either.  And you will never feel the depth of love if you force it.  Love will come to you when it’s time for it to blossom.  Love is part of an ecosystem of connections and kindness you nurture with nothing in return.  But love doesn’t come for free.  There is a cost to love beyond dollars, yen, yuan, won or bitcoin.  You can’t speculate on something you don’t control.  And love is free, chaotic, and most of all nurturing.  Love isn’t a competition.  It’s not something you can quantify and bottle up.  Love is about as heavy as it gets for Saturday morning.  So if anything just remember I love you all.  One person more than most as always.  That’s about as free as I can be.  And if you fuck with my love I will leave you cold in the shadows where you belong not I.  It’s nothing personal.  It’s all love. <3 Tim

…I was gonna stop there.  I was.  And then I woke up this morning and went, “I should do the rest!”  So @kedreeva​ I hope you were expecting two long posts. lol

I kind of mentally group grey, roan, and LP (appaloosa) together, because where paints have big ol’ blobs of color, these three are more characterized by white hairs interspersed within the color (well, and spotting, but LP is weird and we’ll get to that).

Grey is the classic one everyone can probably identify - and the cause of most “white” horses.  If it’s white and it’s got mostly grey skin, it’s grey.

Grey is progressive, just like your hair.  A foal is born the base color - I’d say “dark”, but grey can be on any coat color - and then gradually turns white.  How fast they turn white isn’t something anyone’s figured out yet; definitely there seems to be a genetic component, because there are horses that white out in 6-10 years (and even entire breeds, Lipizzans-I’m-looking-at-you) and horses that get into their late teens before they finally completely white out.  Some greys dapple; some are more uniform.  I’ve even seen a few that went through a stage where it looked like they were badly spray-painted. 

Foals with grey are typically born hyperpigmented - they don’t have the foal camo, light legs and lower body that you see with non-grey foal coats.  Some are even born with grey “goggles” - circles of light color around the eyes.

I love grey and hate it.  I love it because it can be so pretty, but with that pretty comes a significantly higher rate of melanoma tumors.  Not every single grey horse will have melanoma, but some estimates are that 80% of them will.  Not all melanomas will be on the exterior, either - melanomas strangling the intestines is a thing I wish I didn’t know existed, so you’re welcome - and after age 15, there’s a much higher risk that they’ll be malignant.

Classic roan - or just “roan”, but I learned to use classic roan because… well… we’ll get to that - has some similarities with grey.  As with grey, it’s a pattern of white hairs among the colored ones; as with grey, it changes.

But that’s where the similarities end.  Roan changes with the seasons, not with age; a horse that’s mostly white in summer may be nearly black in winter.  They keep a colored head and sometimes keep color in legs and tail - in fact, the head is so characteristic that you can tell a classic roan from other patterns by it.  Level of expression also varies; this picture is a pretty white roan, but I’ve known one that really just looked like a light chestnut until you got close and realized that she had white hairs in there.

Another characteristic of classic roan is corn spots.  These are spots where the skin was damaged that grow in the base color with no white hairs.  They also tend to have “reverse” dapples - where normal dapples are light, roan dapples will be dark.

Other weird thing about roan?  It’s often linked with the gene for black coats at the genetic level.  So if you have a horse that’s got one black gene and one roan gene, their babies will either have both black and roan or neither.

Last but not least is the whole appaloosa pattern… complex, honestly.  lol

There are two parts of appaloosa patterning.  One is LP, the other PATN.  The two control the pattern (PATN) and whether/how it expresses (LP).

Think of LP like a light switch.  If it’s set to off… no PATN shows (though a horse can still have it!).  If it’s set to one gene on, you get to see the PATN (if they have it).  If it’s set to two genes on… well, then the pattern is so “on” that you don’t even see any spots - everywhere that there would be pattern, there’s white (or most everywhere - you’ll see an odd spot here and there).

There are a number of characteristics that go with LP that make it easier to identify if there’s no pattern at birth (or not much pattern): striped hooves, mottled skin, and white sclera around the eye.  It can also do some weird things to colors - it’s known to “bronze” black horses sometimes, turning them a weird reddish color; it also tends to roan out coats, leaving color behind on the high points of bones.  It can cause striped rib markings, which is fun on babies in the middle of growth spurts.

It gets even weirder when you pair it with grey or roan.  Grey + LP produces a horse who loses all the color, but the spots hoard all of the pigment and take a long time to grey out (google Mystic Warrior Friesian for a lovely example).  Roan + LP just… doesn’t do much.

LP does have one other thing it does.  In two copies, it produces congenital stationary night blindness - the inability to see well in low-light or no-light conditions.

PATN is all the patterns - well.  If you look up appaloosa patterns, you’ll see that there are probably six or seven different variations, from varnish roan to leopard to blanket to snowflake.  At this point, though, the genetic testing has really only explained one.

Leopard - PATN1 - is the thing that can give you nose-to-toes spotting.  But it can also give you between that and 60% spotting (around the shoulders).

There’s a theoretical PATN2, though it has not actually been identified yet, and that’s anything 60% and less spotting.

And then there’s varnish roan.  Varnish roan seems to be what happens when there’s LP and no pattern genes.  Unlike classic roan (and this is why I specified “classic roan”), it doesn’t change seasonally; like grey, it’s progressive, but unlike grey, it does still leave the color on bony ridges and legs.  As noted above, it can do weird things to colors, and sometimes there are even little traveling spots that appear and disappear over the course of days or weeks (or appear and stick around for a bit).  It’s easy to mistake varnish roan for grey for classic roan if you don’t know what you’re looking for!

There's no "practically" about it, I am definitely asking you to nerd out about white coat patterns in horses. Also re: albinism in horses, as far as I understand albinism, there should be no reason why they *can't* be albino, just that they haven't mutated that set of genetic conditions. Same as peafowl, who also haven't. In sky cowboys verse, the pegasi evolved over a long time and through a cataclysm, so it's possible they just mutated the conditions themselves like they mutated wings. But Larn would have to answer that one for sure haha

PARKING To avoid confusion and dispute, ask guest to park in designated parking spot(s) only (if your unit has one) and abide by all street signs when utilizing street parking. The last thing you want is for guest to block neighbor mailbox or cause upset in your neighborhood.

Tips: beside giving clear direction to guests where to park, investing in some parking signs on the property. 3. PETS We are pet-lovers ourselves but for a vacation rental, pets can add additional cleaning time and additional wear and tears. We generally don't allow pets on these rentals.

We had guests brought pets into our units without telling us at all. Cleaner had to roll so much dog hairs on the blankets and deep clean the whole place, instead of the usually turn-over cleaning. There are 2 versions, one you can wire into an existing electronic doorbell, one you can just use batteries that charge it from time to time. 6. SMOKING Our units are 100% non-smoking. We find it's easier to clean and keeping it healthy for all guests (yes, including smokers). But we do strike to establish a spot outside the unit they can smoke. To deter smoking indoor, we put signs in the living room and in the bedrooms to remind guests not to smoke. 7. QUIET HOURS "This is a residential area- quiet hours are from 9pm-8am" is that we usually post in the units and in our house rules. You can choose what time works best for your neighborhood. Sometime our neighbors would let us know it's too noisy at night. Having this house rule in place, all we need to do is to remind our dear guests about the quiet hours. 8. CANDLES We used to have candle holders are decoration but due to fire hazard, we don't allow candles anymore. But we do provide flashlights just in case there is an power outage. 9. FURNITURES No moving of furniture! Believe it or not, guests have moved furnitures around to make an arrangement works for them; it's fine as long as they move it back. We have a heavy baby crib in the master bedroom. By the time the guest checked out, the crib was in the other bedroom. With just one cleaner came for that day, it put us way behind schedule to get someone else to came since we needed two people to move the crib back to its original location. Since we had this rule in place, we were able to send the guest photo the the misplaced crib and charged for the additional time needed to turn the unit over. 10. REMOTES & OTHER ITEMS Verbage: No moving of remotes and other items. When you checkout, be sure to leave items where you originally found them. Missing remote controls and other items will be billed to you. We even label the location of the remote with a label maker. This will save your cleaner a lot of time not have to search around and put things back where they should be. Thus, this tip alone will save you money in cleaning fee over time. Even with the best cleaners, when they go through their days cleaning different houses with different setups, all the details might not be perfect all the time. The last thing you want is the next guest coming in and can't find the remote. As you scale up, you might have a reservation coordinator or work with a hosting company that manage guest communication for you. If you have a clear system in place with items being labeled and are in their designated spots, your reservation coordinator can tell guest exactly where the remote is without having to double check with the last cleaner or you. 11. CHECK-OUT On Airbnb, you can specify the checkout time in the listing (under Availability). It doesn't hurt to emphasize this again in the house rules. Delay in checking out can delay your cleaning screw's schedule, you don't want that to happen. And when it does happen, you want to be in a position that you get compensated for it. 12. DAMAGE We ask guests to report any breakages or damages to us as soon as they happen. Unreported damages will be charged to the guest. Tips: Post a list of inventory of all the items in your rentals on the fridge. When things go missing, you have a list ready on hand to proceed to next step to file a airbnb damage claim or vrbo damage claim. Your guests can be another set of eyes for you and let you know if anything that needs to be replaced. Ideally the cleaners should be the person to spot it but sometime they miss it. 13. TRASH If you've multiple single family houses that are scattered across town, it's not cost effective to have someone driving around and bringing your trash bins and recycle bins out and in all week long. In these cases, we ask the guests to bring the bins out and in. The longer the stay, the more the guests will be willing to do it. At the beginning, we thought we might get a lot of complaints. Surprisingly, there have been no complaints at all so far. If you think this is too much to ask your guests, of course, you can manage this yourself or pay extra for your cleaner to take care of this. Verbage: Guests are responsible for removing all waste from the unit and placing it in the appropriate bins outside (this includes removing all open food items from the refrigerator and cabinets, trash, recycle). Additional cleaning fees will be assessed to guests if trash is left in the unit after checkout. Please take the bins out to the curb to be serviced as posted inside your unit. 14. DISHES Washing pile and pile of dishes would turn your turnover cleaning into a forever cleaning. If the unit has a dishwasher, we ask guests to rinse the dirty dishes and run the washer before they checkout. For other units, we ask dishes to be washed before checking out. You can specify how much you want to charge (depending on how much it costs you) to handle dirty dishes in your airbnb house rules. For us, we just wrap it up into the additional cleaning fee rate. 15. SUPPLIES There is no amount or type of supplies can delight all guests. At the minimum, we provide the basic supplies airbnb requires like salt and pepper, etc. We then go above and beyond with larger quantity of basic stuff like trash bags, paper towels and plenty of toilet paper and even a welcome gift. Setting expectation is key. Our rule of thumb is "under promise, over deliver." This way, when guests want more of a certain item, instead of asking us (where we would have to pay the cleaner an additional shopping fee to buy and deliver the item) or complaining and giving us a bad review, they understand they need to get their own supplies. 16. LOCK In our sample house rules for guests, we ask them to always lock all doors/windows when leaving the premise. This also means locking the lockbox right after they use it. Leaving the lockbox open will expose the property to risk of theft (with lockbox, the combination code can be seen when the lockbox is open). 17. PEST CONTROL Even with diligent pest control, properties will tend to have a modicum of bugs, ants and geckos. We listed in our room rental rules and regulations that contacting with a pest inside or outside of property is not a reason for terminating the rental agreement, nor is it a reason for a refund of monies. The property interiors and exteriors are treated regularly for pests. Guests are encouraged to report any pest problems so follow up professional treatment can be scheduled as soon as possible. We do schedule quarterly pest control with Terminix. Prevention is the best course of action. 18. SHOES In Hawaii or in asia, where it's customary to remove shoes before entering the house, we leave a "Please remove your shoes" sign to ask guests to do so and provide a shoes rack. It keeps the unit cleaner and better especially if you have carpet. We also try this for our units in Dallas; however, we provide Finleoo Lightweight slippers in addition to shoes rack. Most guests complied with no question or concern. We love these rubber slipper since they last long and when they are dirty, we can rinse them outside and then wash them in the dishwasher, they come out nice and clean. 19. DRAIN Have ocean front property or rental in a beachtown? Sand will be your concern. Beautiful beaches are great for your guests but not so much for your drain. We always state in our airbnb house rules pdf to remove sand before they enter the house. If there is an outside water hose, we point it out to renters. Also mention clearly in room rental rules and regulations that there will be charge if they clog your drain. To combat hair clog, we use these 2.7 inch sink strainer drainers and they work wonder. 20. LAUNDRY

If multiple units share the same laundry area, you will want to have some clear guideline like laundry hours, what to do when someone leave their clothes inside the machine for an extended time, etc. At the very least, provide instructions on how to use the machines. If you have international guests, this will help them tremendously. 21. KEY Common issues with keys and lockbox: Keys can be lost.Guests forget to put the key back into the lockbox when they check out (usually they left the key inside the unit). Cleaner can't come in because there is no key in the lockbox.Guests don't close the lockbox after taking out the key; therefore, they expose the lockbox code to any passerby. For these reasons, for units that have keys/lockbox, we make sure to include in our airbnb house rules: Place the key back into the lockbox as soon as they open the door, and leave it there when they don't need the key.Always close and lock the lockbox itself. Charge a fee for key replacement and a fee to deliver a new key if they get locked out.We keep another set of spare key (in another lockbox) and hide it somewhere. Tips: The best way is to get an electronic lock, especially one that you can control remotely and change the code remotely. The best setup that we love so far is Schlage with Samsung SmartThings hub. The smart app we use to control the lock remotely is Lock User Management by RBoy SmartThings Apps. We only paid $39 (one time fee only, but per hub, so expect each rental to use 1 hub) to control it remotely (lock, unlock, change user code, etc.). If you want to have it automatically sends a unicode for each stay directly to the guest, you can do that too for a $99 lifetime subscription. 22. MAIL/PACKAGE

Handling guest's packages can be another logistic operation by itself. Packages can arrive early or late, outside the timeframe of the guest stay. Your cleaner or someone will need to locate the package, secure it and mail it to the guests (if the package arrives after the guest has left). Squatters can establish their tenancy by receiving their mails at your rental among other tactics. For this legal concern, if you can avoid allowing mailing of packages, that's better. A solution for this is not to let guests mail their packages to your rental but let them know about USPS General Delivery, where they can mail the package to their name and address it to a local USPS location that offer general delivery service. They can pick up the package at the USPS store. 23.  MAINTENANCE Letting guests know you or your maintenance crew might need to enter the unit for the purpose of general maintenance, bug spray, etc. in your airbnb house rules so you will not startle your guests when you do need to come in. When guests review their stay, airbnb asks the a question on whether or not there were unexpect people there. Per airbnb, if guests violate your house rules, you can cancel the reservation, and usually that means you should be able to keep the money for the reservation. 25. LINENS / TOWELS

In our sample house rules for guests: No refunds will be provided due to inoperable appliances, pools, hot tubs, elevators, etc. The Owner will make every reasonable effort to assure that such appliances will be and remain in good working order.  No refunds will be given due to power blackouts, water shortage, flooding, snow, construction at adjacent properties, or mandatory evacuations of the area by county officials due to hurricanes or other potentially dangerous situations arising from acts of god or nature. 27. COMPLIMENT ITEMS

Providing beach gears or recreational toys for guests is fun. Getting sued when something wrong happens is not. Make sure you put language into your airbnb house rules and ask guests to sign a waiver. Consult with your favorite lawyer for specific language for your state. 28. PORTABLE AC (if applicable to your unit) Last but not least, portable AC usually requires draining the inside reservoir from time to time. If you have a long stay, guests might have to empty it. Why Sergino Dest should represent Netherlands instead of the U.S.

Edwin van der Sar speaks exclusively to ESPN FC about Sergino Dest’s international future.

Oct. 2 was quite a day for Sergino Dest. First, Ajax’s 18-year-old Dutch-American right-back was unexpectedly missing from the U.S. men’s roster announced for the upcoming games against Cuba and Canada. These are competitive matches, in the CONCACAF Nations League, so if Dest had played, he would have been bound to the USMNT rather than the Netherlands for his career. That evening, he played all 90 minutes in Ajax’s 0-3 triumph at Valencia in the Champions League. After the game, he appeared on Dutch TV.

Dutch fans hoped he would announce that he had decided to play for their national team. Instead, he said he hadn’t chosen either country yet. “I still need to think longer about both options … It is a decision I have to make for the rest of my life and I want to handle that carefully.”

He said he hoped to have a decision by next month. Gregg Berhalter, the U.S. coach, who had previously found Dest “enthusiastic” about playing for the USMNT, now sounded guarded. “I’ve had conversations with Sergino. The conversations were positive, and the content of these conversations is going to remain private,” Berhalter told the Washington Post.

The cautious conclusion must be that the Netherlands are favorites to win this race. Certainly, they would be the rational choice for Dest. And though it’s far too early to tell, he may prove a prize worth having for the next 15 years.

Dest was born and raised in Almere, a working-class town just outside Amsterdam, with a Dutch mother and a Surinamese-American father from Brooklyn. The first time he set foot in the U.S., on a visit to his dad’s hometown, was in 2014. “At home in Almere we just spoke Dutch,” Dest told the Ajax website. “In fact, a couple of years ago my English was still very mediocre. And I wasn’t thinking about my American roots [until] I started to play in U.S. youth teams. From then on my English improved, and I kept feeling more American. I realised: hey, this is my nationality too. And the U.S. passport is one of the most beautiful in the world.”

Dest had arrived at Ajax from Almere City as a child winger in 2012, and gradually transformed into an attacking right-back. Other Dutch boys’ teams enduring the ritual humiliation at Ajax’s youth complex, De Toekomst in those days, recall him flashing down the touchline, while his teammates queued in the box shouting “Serra,” each begging Dest to grant them the final touch. After every cross, Dest would trot tirelessly back to position and resume his tackling, dribbles and “pannas” (Dutch-Surinamese slang for nutmegs). He was the Everywhere Back, sometimes popping up at center-forward, but for all his activity he made few mistakes, despite being a year younger than his teammates.

Yet the Dutch federation didn’t pick Dest for its national youth teams. “I never got a chance,” he says. The U.S. Soccer Federation pounced after Dutchman Dave van den Bergh, then one of the federation’s youth coaches, heard from Ajax about the boy’s American passport. Dest represented the U.S. in the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 (Ajax didn’t wanted him to go) and excelled in the team’s run to the quarterfinals of this summer’s Under-20 World Cup.

For a long time, Ajax seemed ambivalent about Dest, possibly because although he’s dedicated, he was also rather headstrong. Even last fall, when he was already 18, he looked headed for the exit in Amsterdam. Only in December did Ajax finally come through with a professional contract.

Dest is an aggressive full-back that a high-pressing side like Ajax needs, though his defending remains a work in progress.

This summer, his career took off. After the Under-20 World Cup, Ajax head coach, Erik ten Hag, requested that Dest be given just 10 days holiday. Ten Hag had plans for him. Dest made his first-team debut in late July, and since then has become a regular, usually as a starter.

You can see why, because he is the full-back that a high-pressing modern side needs. Ten Hag says, “A back at Ajax has to be able to function as a midfielder and winger, too. It’s a very dynamic role. We want to introduce a lot of variation into our game, to surprise opponents.”

That’s Dest’s way. He told Amsterdam’s Het Parool newspaper, “I think of myself [as someone who has] a good technique. I don’t get frightened when I get the ball — also not when under pressure, or on the opponents’ half.”

His high-risk game gives Ajax an attacking threat from right-back that they lacked even in their extraordinary last season. “Maybe in the past, when I first got into a higher team, I’d take it easy,” Dest says. “But I’ve stopped doing that. Now I show at once what I can do.”

In Ajax’s opening Champions League game in September, a 3-0 win over Lille, he produced a roulette through two opponents from the full-back position — a showboating move that Ten Hag may not have enjoyed as much as the fans did. Dest also has the good fortune that his partner on Ajax’s right wing is Hakim Ziyech, a world-class player whose continued presence in the humble Dutch league is a mystery.

Dest’s main shortcoming, for now, is that for a defender, he isn’t great at defending. Being the speediest member of Ajax’s back four, he’s essential in snuffing out counter attacks, but he sometimes gets caught out of position. (Ajax’s opening two clean sheets in the Champions League are above all down to keeper Andre Onana, surely headed for a giant club next summer.) Ajax demands that players “defend forward,” that is, charge into challenges to try to win the ball back fast rather than sit back and cover space. Dest has yet to master this difficult art.

The consensus in the Netherlands is that he isn’t ready for Oranje. Still, the Dutch federation knows it has to act fast. In September, Berhalter gave him his debut for the USMNT, starting him against Mexico and Uruguay. But these were non-binding friendly games; Dest retains the option to switch to the Netherlands. The Dutch would like to give him a full cap in a competitive match to claim him for life, then let him mature in the under-21s side.

The Dutch federation still laments missing out on Ziyech, who trained with Oranje in 2015 before choosing Morocco. It’s determined not to make that mistake again. It is focused on recruiting Dest and the possibly even more talented 17-year-old Dutch-Moroccan Mohamed Ihattaren, PSV Eindhoven’s playmaker who is tearing up the Dutch league.

Like the U.S., the Netherlands is short a top-class right-back: PSV’s Denzel Dumfries, who has been filling the role with Oranje, lacks the technique for international level. Netherlands’ coach, Ronald Koeman, and the Dutch FA’s director of “topvoetbal,” Nico-Jan Hoogma, sat down with Dest in September. Hoogma reported afterwards: “You can’t promise someone a first-team place, but you can indicate who their rivals are. Based on our story, Dest has to make a decision.”

Koeman said, “I’m not promising anyone anything, but I indicated to him that I see a future for him with the Dutch team. He decided to take his time. That he hasn’t travelled to the U.S. now shows that the issue isn’t decided for him.”

The Dutch have a good story to tell. Since the U.S. returned to World Cups, in 1990, the Americans have progressed further than Oranje at a tournament only once, in 2002. (Of course, both countries failed to qualify for 2018 in Russia.) Moreover, if Dest chooses the Netherlands, he won’t have to spend his career making disruptive exhausting trips to play second-rate national teams from the CONCACAF region.

On the other hand, Dest has an emotional attachment to the U.S., and the USSF was good to him at youth level when the Dutch FA ignored him. The Americans have a chance. But as battles for binationals become the norm in international soccer, the Dest case ought to be a prompt for the U.S. to ask itself: Why does the tiny fraction of American passport-holders raised in western Europe still produce such a disproportionate share of this giant country’s best players?

Meanwhile, in a joint interview on the Ajax website with the U.S.-Mexican Alex Mendez, who plays for Ajax’s reserves, the conflicted Dest turned to Mendez and asked: “What would you do if you were in my shoes?”

These decisions are always in part matters of the heart, but the betting must be that Dest chooses Oranje.

Best Day To Book Flights in 2020

I love traveling.

But it can get expensive. Especially the flights and hotels.

On international flights, the same seat on the same flight can range by over a thousand dollars. It costs $800 today and $1800 tomorrow. I’d much rather pay $1000 less for the same exact trip.

A few simple rules will help you land the best prices for your flights.

So when’s the best time to book flights anyway?

Know The True Cost of Flying

When you’re looking at flights, you’re probably focused on the dollar amount listed next to your fight option. Aside from the cost of your seat, here are a few other expenses you might have to pay:

Taxes

Checked Bag fees

Carry on fees

Snacks and drinks

Seating selection

Priority seating

Priority Boarding

Booking fees

Cancellation fees

Flight change fees

Wifi

Pet fees

Sometimes, these fees get buried in the checkout process and aren’t included in the total ticket price. Budget airlines are particularly bad at this. The ticket might officially cost $200 but you have to pay an extra $25 to pick any seat.

A IdeaWorks report shows that some companies have higher fees than others. When you’re booking flights, Spirit, WOW Air, Allegiant, and Frontier are more likely to hit you with baggage fees and online booking fees. These four companies charge an average of $49.25 in extra fees per flight.

Some airlines appear to have low base rates but once you tack on extra fees, the total can quickly soar. For example, Spirit Airlines gets roughly 33% of their total revenue from online booking fees and another 11% from seating fees.

Not only do you have to deal with fees for extras, there’s a bunch of mandatory fees and taxes on your ticket:

Most of the time, these taxes and fees are added to the public price of your ticket. There won’t be any surprises.

There is one situation where they can bite you.

When you redeem a reward ticket, you still have to pay all these fees. For example, an international flight might cost 60,000 miles and $100 in fees and taxes.

Most of the time, this amount is so small that you’re basically getting the flight for free. But not always.

Some airlines pass on a lot more fees to you. They can get so large that the ticket no longer feels free. The worst offender is British Airways. You can still get stuck paying $300-500 for an award ticket.

The Worst Times to Fly

Airline fees aren’t the only thing that will affect the cost of your flights. The days you fly to and from your destination, as well as the time of day can impact your travel budget. Understandably, the most popular times to travel are also the most expensive.

One of my favorite holiday travel hacks is to fly on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. There’s a lot fewer people and the prices tend to be normal as opposed to sell-my-left-kidney high.

During major holidays, there’s really no escape. Almost every route gets more expensive.

Spring break tends to be more destination dependent. You can expect to pay higher prices for flights to Hawaii, Florida, or other tropical locations during that time. Flights to ski towns also get expensive.

What about specific times of the day? Is there a difference in pricing?

If you want to avoid paying the highest fares, skip booking your tickets late at night on Friday when tickets are likely to cost 3% more than the rest of the week.

The Best Times to Fly

If you want to score the biggest deals on flights, choose your travel days in the off-season. That means skipping flights around major holidays and popular travel times. You’re likely to score great flight tickets during the spring and fall.

Most tourist destinations get overwhelmed during the summer, June through August in particular. The main exception to this is popular winter destinations which get busy from December through March.

Traveling in the shoulder seasons is another favorite hack of mine. The weather’s still pretty good and the prices for airlines are a lot better.

The best times to score deals include:

You can save hundreds of dollars by shifting your vacation by a few weeks.

If you want to try and save an extra bit of money, try to book your flight around midnight on Tuesday. The rumor in travel circles is you’ll get a 5-7% discount. I’ve never tried it, I’d rather spend my time finding a better reward flight or less popular destination.

Does The Actual Booking Day Matter?

Yes. People prefer to travel on certain days. While it’s impossible to predict the exact cheapest date to fly, you can safely assume you’ll save at least a little bit of money on certain days of the week, even if you have to travel at busier times of the year.

If you want to increase your chance on major savings, look for flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Since most people enjoy taking long weekends, you’ll have higher fares and busier security lines on Friday and Monday. Thursday and Saturday fall in the middle.

I used to do a lot of travel for business and after while, you start to notice a few patterns. The business crowd hits flights hard on Mondays and Fridays. There’s a lot of people that travel for a full week of work and then head home. Weekends are swamped with tourists and families.

If you avoid those two crowds by flying on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, the cost of your flight will be a lot better. Of course, this isn’t always the case. Events, holidays, and popular destinations can all surge pricing regardless of the day.

How far out should you book your flight?

There is a lot of conflicting information online about how far out you should book your plane tickets. The rule that I’ve found to be most consistent is to buy my ticket about 70 days before my departure date. That’s assuming I’m paying full price. If I’m looking for an award ticket, I book the seat as soon as it becomes available.

If you’re making an emergency visit, expect to pay some of the most expensive prices. The average traveler will pay almost $100 more per ticket if they book one to two weeks out and expect to pay $200 or more per ticket within a week of your travel date.

Other Tips For Getting The Best Flight Deals

There are deals to be had if you’re willing to put in a little extra work. If you want to maximize your savings, here are a few other things you can do to make sure you get the best deal possible.

Set up flight alerts: Get alerts sent to your inbox or your cell phone when prices change. Certain sites like Kayak and Google Flights can give you weekly price updates so you can snag a seat when prices drop.

Be flexible: If you can change your travel by one or two days, you can save on your tickets. Make sure to check multiple routes and layover variations, if the budget is a major sticking point.

A IdeaWorks report shows that some companies have higher fees than others. When you’re booking flights, Spirit, WOW Air, Allegiant, and Frontier are more likely to hit you with baggage fees and online booking fees. These four companies charge an average of $49.25 in extra fees per flight.

Some airlines appear to have low base rates but once you tack on extra fees, the total can quickly soar. For example, Spirit Airlines gets roughly 33% of their total revenue from online booking fees and another 11% from seating fees.

Not only do you have to deal with fees for extras, there’s a bunch of mandatory fees and taxes on your ticket:

Most of the time, these taxes and fees are added to the public price of your ticket. There won’t be any surprises.

There is one situation where they can bite you.

When you redeem a reward ticket, you still have to pay all these fees. For example, an international flight might cost 60,000 miles and $100 in fees and taxes.

Most of the time, this amount is so small that you’re basically getting the flight for free. But not always.

Some airlines pass on a lot more fees to you. They can get so large that the ticket no longer feels free. The worst offender is British Airways. You can still get stuck paying $300-500 for an award ticket.

The Worst Times to Fly

Airline fees aren’t the only thing that will affect the cost of your flights. The days you fly to and from your destination, as well as the time of day can impact your travel budget. Understandably, the most popular times to travel are also the most expensive.

One of my favorite holiday travel hacks is to fly on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. There’s a lot fewer people and the prices tend to be normal as opposed to sell-my-left-kidney high.

During major holidays, there’s really no escape. Almost every route gets more expensive.

Spring break tends to be more destination dependent. You can expect to pay higher prices for flights to Hawaii, Florida, or other tropical locations during that time. Flights to ski towns also get expensive.

What about specific times of the day? Is there a difference in pricing?

If you want to avoid paying the highest fares, skip booking your tickets late at night on Friday when tickets are likely to cost 3% more than the rest of the week.

The Best Times to Fly

If you want to score the biggest deals on flights, choose your travel days in the off-season. That means skipping flights around major holidays and popular travel times. You’re likely to score great flight tickets during the spring and fall.

Most tourist destinations get overwhelmed during the summer, June through August in particular. The main exception to this is popular winter destinations which get busy from December through March.

Traveling in the shoulder seasons is another favorite hack of mine. The weather’s still pretty good and the prices for airlines are a lot better.

You can save hundreds of dollars by shifting your vacation by a few weeks.

If you want to try and save an extra bit of money, try to book your flight around midnight on Tuesday. The rumor in travel circles is you’ll get a 5-7% discount. I’ve never tried it, I’d rather spend my time finding a better reward flight or less popular destination.

Does The Actual Booking Day Matter?

Yes. People prefer to travel on certain days. While it’s impossible to predict the exact cheapest date to fly, you can safely assume you’ll save at least a little bit of money on certain days of the week, even if you have to travel at busier times of the year.

If you want to increase your chance on major savings, look for flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Since most people enjoy taking long weekends, you’ll have higher fares and busier security lines on Friday and Monday. Thursday and Saturday fall in the middle.

I used to do a lot of travel for business and after while, you start to notice a few patterns. The business crowd hits flights hard on Mondays and Fridays. There’s a lot of people that travel for a full week of work and then head home. Weekends are swamped with tourists and families.

If you avoid those two crowds by flying on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, the cost of your flight will be a lot better. Of course, this isn’t always the case. Events, holidays, and popular destinations can all surge pricing regardless of the day.

How far out should you book your flight?

There is a lot of conflicting information online about how far out you should book your plane tickets. The rule that I’ve found to be most consistent is to buy my ticket about 70 days before my departure date. That’s assuming I’m paying full price. If I’m looking for an award ticket, I book the seat as soon as it becomes available.

If you’re making an emergency visit, expect to pay some of the most expensive prices. The average traveler will pay almost $100 more per ticket if they book one to two weeks out and expect to pay $200 or more per ticket within a week of your travel date.

Other Tips For Getting The Best Flight Deals

There are deals to be had if you’re willing to put in a little extra work. If you want to maximize your savings, here are a few other things you can do to make sure you get the best deal possible.

Set up flight alerts: Get alerts sent to your inbox or your cell phone when prices change. Certain sites like Kayak and Google Flights can give you weekly price updates so you can snag a seat when prices drop.

Be flexible: If you can change your travel by one or two days, you can save on your tickets. Make sure to check multiple routes and layover variations, if the budget is a major sticking point.

Try connecting flights: If you don’t mind taking a bit of time to get from point A to point B, try taking connecting flights instead of direct flights. While this will save money, I don’t do it myself. I’d much rather pay a little extra for a direct flight.

Choose a regional airline: If you’re not a stickler for major perks, flying with a regional airline can save you a lot. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, and Alaska are known for having lower rates than other airlines.

Using an airline rewards credit card: If you purchase your flights on an airline credit card, you may be able to save money on baggage fees or get priority seating. Many airlines offer their own credit cards that offer special perks and discounts that could save you a lot.

Switch airports: You could save a hundred dollars or more by simply switching to a different airport for your arrival or departure. Try looking at smaller airports outside the city, they usually have cheaper flights. For example, I’ve gotten good deals flying into Oakland instead of SFO.

Consider booking a package: If you know where you’re going, you may be able to save even more money by booking your hotel and flight together. Just be really careful with these packages, the quality can be horrible. Get a detailed itinerary from the travel company you’re working with and don’t go through with it if anything sounds off.

Try booking red-eye flights: If you don’t mind flying at off hours or trying to catch a few Z’s mid-air, taking a red-eye flight can cost less. As a bonus, you’ll have much shorter security lines and typically less crowded flights.

When in doubt, book earlier rather than later. While flight prices fluctuate, they’re more likely to increase at a higher percentage than drop. Even if rates drop after you purchase your tickets, you’ll likely still save more than if you’d waited until the last minute when rates are likely to go even higher.

As Youth Suicides Climb, Anguished Parents Begin To Speak Out

Alec Murray was 13. He enjoyed camping, fishing and skiing. At home, it was video games, movies and books. Having just completed middle school with “almost straight A’s,” those grades were going to earn him an iPhone for his upcoming birthday.

Instead, he killed himself on June 8 — the first day of summer break.

Caleb Stenvold was 14. He was a high school freshman in the gifted and talented program. He ran track and played defensive cornerback on his school’s football team. Just two months into high school ― and four months after Alec’s suicide — Caleb killed himself on Oct. 22.

The teenagers, both from Reno, Nevada, didn’t know each other. But their families now do, bonded by loss. Their parents are haunted by what they don’t understand: why.

They ― along with mental health experts, school leaders and researchers — are trying to understand why suicide by children ages 10 to 14 has gone up and up. The suicide rate for that age group almost tripled from 2007 to 2017. Newly released 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a 16% increase over the previous year.

While experts point to a host of explanations for the alarming rise, scientific proof about cause isn’t conclusive. Some research shows correlations with social media use, cyberbullying and the internet, but studies citing them as a suicide cause are less decisive.

The parents of Caleb and Alec believe impulsivity ― very common in teens because their brains aren’t fully developed — played a role in their suicides.

Kerri Countess, Caleb’s mother, called his suicide “totally unexpected and unimaginable.” He was the youngest of her five sons.

Paige Murray said son Alec “showed no signs of mental distress or depression or anxiety.”

“We think it was an incredibly impulsive act by a hormonal young man,” she said, noting that Alec’s stellar grades were posted online the day of his suicide.

Caleb was a high school freshman in the gifted and talented program. Just two months into high school ― and four months after Alec’s suicide — Caleb killed himself on Oct. 22. Experts suggest that our celebrity culture, where suicidal thoughts are sometimes romanticized or normalized, also plays a role. Alec’s parents and Caleb’s parents say they need to speak out and warn other families.

When Caleb died, “we wanted everyone to know he died of suicide because if it can happen to my child who was not bullied and did not fit into the reasons people kill themselves, it can happen to anyone,” Countess said. “It was an impulsive and immature act.”

Amy Kulp, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide, said youth, in particular, “have very few experiences with dealing with outside stressors” and “tend to be quite impulsive.”

“If they have a precipitating event like they are bullied or don’t make a team or a friend stops talking to them or something is on social media that they’re embarrassed about,” she said, “they don’t know they will get through it.”

Kulp said the rise in suicide among the youngest adolescents has spawned prevention programs targeting elementary and middle schoolers, teaching things like resilience, wellness, self-care and coping behaviors.

Psychologist Mary Alvord said she’s been seeing “younger and younger kids” in her practice.

“At ages 6, 7 and 8, I’m now seeing kids with depression,” said Alvord, of Rockville, Maryland. “It used to be suicide attempts were more in high school. Now, I’m seeing more completed suicides in middle school and even upper elementary school.”

The CDC data illustrate “a steady consistent increase,” that “deserves our focus and our attention,” said CDC statistician Sally Curtin. “It’s linear and has gone up every single year since 2010.”

The CDC also monitors suicide attempts and self-inflicted injuries, based on data from emergency rooms. The latest CDC report published Jan. 31 found that from 2001 to 2016 such visits for those 10 and older increased 42%, with “substantial increases occurring in younger age groups.”

“Death has become public,” he said. “With the internet and social media, when somebody dies, it’s all over your newsfeed. Hundreds of millions knew within minutes that Kobe Bryant had died. Death is much more a part of their generation.”

Among those aiming to reverse the trend is the National Association of State Boards of Education, based in Alexandria, Virginia, which examined the 2017-18 school year and determined that 25 states and the District of Columbia required or encouraged school districts to develop suicide prevention policies.

According to the organization’s policy review, author Megan Blanco said only three of 10 states with the highest youth suicide rates (ages 10-24) had a suicide prevention policy. The youth suicide rate for Nevada — where Alec and Caleb lived ― is 14.4 deaths per 100,000, which is higher than the national average of 10.6 deaths per 100,000. Nevada was not among the 25 states with a prevention policy, she said.

Alvord, the psychologist, has conducted programs to promote suicide awareness as a joint effort of National PTA and the American Psychological Association. She also helped APA develop online advice for parents to talk to teens about suicide.

Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, a pediatrician and an adolescent medicine specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, co-founded the Center for Parent and Teen Communication.

“It’s never a mistake to ask a person about their emotions or whether [someone should] be worried about them,” he said.

“People think depression is always seen as sadness,” Ginsburg said. “While sadness is a very important clue, adolescent depression can present with irritability, rage or anger, instead of just sadness. Physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, belly pain, dizziness, loss of weight ― these are all things that can present as having problems with mood or depression. Parents may miss the signals.”

The day after his death, Caleb’s parents sought answers on his phone and computer, asking their son Matthew, then 16, to search Caleb’s history back to middle school for possible clues. They found one thing: a search for “suicide” the day before Caleb hanged himself.

Nadine Kaslow, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, said parents need to realize that kids communicate differently today and any thought of banning social media or phones isn’t realistic or wise.

“Parents often get mad at kids because they’re texting or Instagramming or Snapchatting,” she said. “I worry when kids are not doing those things. If they stop doing that, they’re not having fun.”

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book “iGen,” has a darker view of the effects of media consumption and technology, based upon her research. Studies published in several journals in recent years — including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychiatric Quarterly and Sleep Medicine — found detrimental connections between the omnipresent smartphone, social media, sleep disruption and depression.

The mother of three (including a 13-year-old) believes technology should not be in a child’s room overnight, and she doesn’t believe anyone 10 to 14 “absolutely needs a smartphone.”

Twenge said it’s difficult to determine a reason other than technology for the suicide spike in recent years.

“Phones and smartphones check all the boxes of possible causes,” she said. “It’s something that’s affected a very large number of people and affected their everyday lives. It’s hard to think of anything else that fits that criteria.”

Perhaps the most significant analysis supporting Twenge’s worries appeared this month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The evidence from cross-sectional, longitudinal and empirical studies “implicates smartphone and social media use in the increase in mental distress, self-injurious behaviour and suicidality among youth.” The review also found that social media “can affect adolescents’ self-view and interpersonal relationships through social comparison and negative interactions, including cyberbullying; moreover, social media content often involves normalization and even promotion of self-harm and suicidality among youth.”

A Pew Research Center report on cyberbullying released in 2018 found 56% of 13- to 14-year-olds had experienced cyberbullying; more than one-third said they had been the victim of offensive name-calling or false rumors.

Their parents said neither Alec nor Caleb were bullied. But many others are.

“We don’t know if bullying is the cause, or if kids who are depressed make better targets for a bully,” said Justin Patchin, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center.

Henry Kautz, a professor of computer science at the University of Rochester in New York, sees a similar dynamic with technology.

“People have been quick to point to studies that show increases in screen time and increases in depression. But it’s really unclear which way the causation goes,” he said. “Are people who are bullied and isolated seeking refuge in more screen time or is it the other way around?”

Make sure it becomes a part of everyday knowledge.”

“This wasn’t a conversation that ever entered our house until June 8, but knowing what we know now, it should be. We were blindsided by it,” Lee Murray said. “It’s hindsight. We could have done better, but how would you know?”

Alvord, the psychologist, has conducted programs to promote suicide awareness as a joint effort of National PTA and the American Psychological Association. She also helped APA develop online advice for parents to talk to teens about suicide.

Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, a pediatrician and an adolescent medicine specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, co-founded the Center for Parent and Teen Communication.

“It’s never a mistake to ask a person about their emotions or whether [someone should] be worried about them,” he said.

“People think depression is always seen as sadness,” Ginsburg said. “While sadness is a very important clue, adolescent depression can present with irritability, rage or anger, instead of just sadness. Physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, belly pain, dizziness, loss of weight ― these are all things that can present as having problems with mood or depression. Parents may miss the signals.”

The day after his death, Caleb’s parents sought answers on his phone and computer, asking their son Matthew, then 16, to search Caleb’s history back to middle school for possible clues. They found one thing: a search for “suicide” the day before Caleb hanged himself.

Nadine Kaslow, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, said parents need to realize that kids communicate differently today and any thought of banning social media or phones isn’t realistic or wise.

“Parents often get mad at kids because they’re texting or Instagramming or Snapchatting,” she said. “I worry when kids are not doing those things. If they stop doing that, they’re not having fun.”

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book “iGen,” has a darker view of the effects of media consumption and technology, based upon her research. Studies published in several journals in recent years — including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychiatric Quarterly and Sleep Medicine — found detrimental connections between the omnipresent smartphone, social media, sleep disruption and depression.

The mother of three (including a 13-year-old) believes technology should not be in a child’s room overnight, and she doesn’t believe anyone 10 to 14 “absolutely needs a smartphone.”

Twenge said it’s difficult to determine a reason other than technology for the suicide spike in recent years.

“Phones and smartphones check all the boxes of possible causes,” she said. “It’s something that’s affected a very large number of people and affected their everyday lives. It’s hard to think of anything else that fits that criteria.”

Perhaps the most significant analysis supporting Twenge’s worries appeared this month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The evidence from cross-sectional, longitudinal and empirical studies “implicates smartphone and social media use in the increase in mental distress, self-injurious behaviour and suicidality among youth.” The review also found that social media “can affect adolescents’ self-view and interpersonal relationships through social comparison and negative interactions, including cyberbullying; moreover, social media content often involves normalization and even promotion of self-harm and suicidality among youth.”

A Pew Research Center report on cyberbullying released in 2018 found 56% of 13- to 14-year-olds had experienced cyberbullying; more than one-third said they had been the victim of offensive name-calling or false rumors.

Their parents said neither Alec nor Caleb were bullied. But many others are.

“We don’t know if bullying is the cause, or if kids who are depressed make better targets for a bully,” said Justin Patchin, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center.

Henry Kautz, a professor of computer science at the University of Rochester in New York, sees a similar dynamic with technology.

“People have been quick to point to studies that show increases in screen time and increases in depression. But it’s really unclear which way the causation goes,” he said. “Are people who are bullied and isolated seeking refuge in more screen time or is it the other way around?”

The parents of Alec and Caleb are moving past blame into action. The Murrays are working with the Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital and other agencies to better coordinate local suicide prevention. Caleb’s parents created Forever14.org, a website dedicated to promoting conversation and human connection in order to prevent teen suicide. They have filed paperwork to create a nonprofit with the same mission.

“Don’t think it’s too young to talk to your kids about if they might feel like hurting themselves. You might think you have time to tell them, but you can’t go back,” Caleb’s father, Storm Stenvold, said. “I don’t know what pain he was in for that time that he felt he needed to do this. He decided on this very quickly. He was rarely alone. He was home less than three hours by himself.”

Paige Murray agrees, which is why she and her husband, Lee, said they weren’t going to be silent about Alec’s suicide.

“Every family needs to have a conversation about suicide with their children —starting very young. Don’t just spring it on them when they’re 10,” she said. “It should be part of everyday conversation about loving yourself and making sure tomorrow is another day. Make sure it becomes a part of everyday knowledge.”

“This wasn’t a conversation that ever entered our house until June 8, but knowing what we know now, it should be. We were blindsided by it,” Lee Murray said. “It’s hindsight. We could have done better, but how would you know?”
