What if medicine cats were some sort of priesthood honoring a god(dess) of the freshkill pile? Sort of like the Roman Vestal Virgins who kept the eternal flame of Rome at her temple.

I'd add to their duties some form of haruspicy (divination by examining the entrails of dead animals), which serves a dual purpose as taking out the guts of dead animals tremendously helps cut down the number of parasites these cats may ingest. This also brings out an additional justification for not eating fresh kill before bringing it to camp: the meddie's gotta examine those guts for StarClan prophecies.

Also, the Vestal Virgin equivalence brings out the possibility that the role has an age cap at which point you're too old to remain in it, which for my purposes is very useful because in my AUs I have a tendency to overstuff the medicine den.

It's from an AU I have where the meddie position is hereditary and I think they're really sweet because they went from an arranged marriage as part of Tigerstar's scheming to genuinely falling in love. Littlecloud even offered to break the bethrotal once Tigerstar was out of the picture and Tawny still chose to be with him. :3 (@troutfur)

Starting off explaining what I have so far for the Insane Subspace au we have the start of it all: Rusted Boombox!

“Oh so YOUR the one Medkit finds soooo annoying huh? Typical of you playgrounds really, in that case I’m sure Meddy won’t mind if I take you off his plate and ears :)”

Subspace had targeted and cornered Boombox somewhere while enlisting the help of Hyperlaser to wound him, he also decided that this annoying little brat whould be his test subject of choice for a thing he cooked up with the help of the power of his crystals: rust that eats away at the demon as if they were metal (it does stop after a bit, it’s made to make SURE the target stays down if they manage to live)

after that was said and done the two left with Subspace cackling like the maniac he is, taking out one of the two most annoying phighters was just one step of his plan. Feeling cockier then ever and more confident that the world will bend and break to Blackrock. Hyperlaser, however, felt a small bad feeling about Subspace. He brushes it off as just being the usual Blackrock feelings though

back to Boombox, he laid motionless against the wall. The rust had stopped by now, leaving lasting damage to the gear and the demon that fell victim to the organic material destroying rust. Seemingly dead by then from the injuries

…. However. Despite better judgment, and judgement of his fellow deities, a certain ghost looked around to see if the coast is clear. Walking over to the playground phighter and kneeling down as if to check out the damages.

“hm…. I hope you know, I usually place myself as neutral no matter the demon or faction…” he gave a sigh despite having seemingly no way to “however, I can sense something brewing deep down and your team will be needing your help. Your death will only bring Crossroads to its knees, and the others- or at least I- will not allow this to go on.”

he stood back up

“I don’t usually do this, never found the reason to myself, but each of you have a role to play… and you are the catalyst to doing so.”

The deity raised up his broken spectral sword

“May you use it well, it will keep you alive if you ever were to succumb to your grave wounds agian before you get help or help find you. Mabey you can find some extra use for it who knows. Just keep in mind your the only one I’m doing this for.”

The ghostly deity brings the sword down into the ground in front of the fallen demon and then disappears with the sword, leaving small flecks of white lingering in the air…

…. A single twitch.. then another, until the phighter awoke with a huge gasp of air and a flicker of a large white X going into all corners of his visor before it flickers back off again- well- or at least he thinks he’s awake. He’s not sure as something was clouding his visor, making everything almost a dark orangish brown void. “S..SLING?… SKATE?… A-ANYONE?…” … not an answer. That’s… that’s ok, he could find them soon, right? That or they find him, where ever he is.

He tries to push himself up, having almost little success. Pain shot through him, causing him to give a yelp and almost collapse back onto the ground again. Limping it is he guesses!.. “H..hah, n-nothing.. I-i can’t handle..”

He picks up his boombox with a little bit of a struggle, at least all of them came with the instinct to use the gear thier given! He dosnt need to see his boombox to know how to use it, that he’s thankful for… although it feels… wrong. Almost uncomfortable to hold, some kind of scratchy metal-like surface covered the boombox in various degrees.

He just has to hope it still works.

If your wondering how he gets around, Rusty Boombox ends up using music to get a hold of his surroundings, basically letting the beat guide him in a very literal way

The boombox… not AS powerful as it once was (and bearly even plays a song properly sometimes) But it still works, and hits HARD

If I was going slightly off of Canon Compliance for skins (which I doubt have any lore except for ones like Biograft) I whould say the boom box could cause a area attack similar to Pulse wave attack but it goes all the way around him (and also has spikes added onto the visual), like a sour note

Also one of Rusty’s horns had snapped off from the rust on him! Which is… fun.

It's been a while since he was captured by this strange people, he even couldn't move him own limbs every time trying to move ends with horrible pains what that person done to him. Upon hearing the battle near he could only say with a low wick voice. "H...Help me ... it hurts." (For Gunvolt)

After Elise freed Roy from Asimov's grasp, she and the others tried their best to help him.

"His body is still trying to adjust to his new Adept powers..."

"How long must he be in pain like this?!"

"The time varies depending on the individual. Some of the people who were experimented on didn't even service the procedure..."

"Are you telling me Roy is going to die...?!"

"No, he should be fine. The fact that he held up for this long is a good sign that he's going to make it. All that's left is for his body to adjust to being an Adept..."

"Oh... Well, I'm glad he's going to make it, but I don't want to watch him suffer like this..."

"I'll try healing him to reduce the pain. Roll, Meddy, Atoli, may I have your assistance, please?"

"Yes, of course."

RAMBLE ABOUT THE MEDDIE, MY GOOD MAN

Aye, aye, captain!

(Under the cut because length, predictably.)

So! Let's start from the beginning and let me tell you what are my family headcanons for him. I don't have well defined parents for him, I really have no idea what works best for him. But I do know pretty definitively who I think are his littermates: Antpelt and Harespring.

What really gave me this idea was the Only Child Lionblaze AU. Each of these three characters have a connection to the WindClan three and as such I thought making them siblings would be fitting.

Harespring is a rival to Hollytail for the deputyship. Both are ambitious, rule-following, and competitive. Harespring in particular resents Hollytail because he sees her as having an unfair advantage. He's both Ashfoot's apprentice and granddaughter, not to mention Onestar's grandniece. In his view she's coasting a lot on the nepotism and so Harespring decided on training in the Dark Forest as a way to gain his own advantage on her.

Antpelt is Breezepelt's best friend. While in this AU given that he has Hollytail and Jayroot to serve as a support net that keeps him in check and helps alleviate the pain of what they all suffer having Crowfeather as a father, Breezepelt still has a lot of aggression to him (not helped by getting to have Lionblaze's power). Breezepelt's firendship with Antpelt ultimately begun with them being sparing partners and grew from his need to have someone outside his family.

(Breezepelt also takes the role of Ivypool, the DF spy pressured to take the role by his siblings. His introduction was through Antpelt, and as you can imagine that turns out tragic.)

Finally Kestrelpaw who was a nursery friend of Jaypaw's who was devastated about how cold he turned upon becoming a warrior apprentice. He's very desperate to win his friend back over, fretting about whatever he did wrong, trying in vain to approach even though Jaypaw seems to want nothing with him, losing much sleep and tears over it. They end up reconnecting once Jayroot earns his full name and Kestrelpaw is unsure of what changed and is over the moon about it.

(What happened is that StarClan was trying to goad Jaypaw into sabotaging Kestrelpaw and replacing him as Barkface's apprentice. Jaypaw began avoiding Kestrelpaw for fear StarClan may play a dirty trick. StarClan only gives up once Jayroot becomes a warrior and only then can their friendship rekindle.)

I really enjoy this dynamic between the two litters a lot and even though the Hare & Ant & Kestrel litter doesn't work nearly as well without it, I'm still attached to the headcanon. If nothing else the thought of them working together as WindClan's upper rung of power and them having to contend together with the fact their brother was erased from existence is compelling. I bet it was a tragic conversation once Harespring could talk about it.

BUT ANYWAY! Onto his characterization!

His most consistent traits in canon, at least as far as Po3 and OotS are concerned, are that he's friendly and naive. A little bit stupid even. I really like to play into those first two in the way he interacts with Jaypaw. He's convinced that with a friendly attitude and a little persistence he can turn the grump around. He's not ultimately wrong about it, too.

Within the half-moon meeting gang dynamic Willowshine is deeply disapproving of his endeavor to win Jaypaw over. She met him before her, as we may recall during Jaypaw's first half-moon metting Kestrelpaw was sick back in camp, and it wasn't at all a good first impression. Willowpaw tries to dissuade him and acts antagonistic towards Jaypaw in an attempt to protect sweet, naive, little Kestrelpaw.

Eventually, though, when he makes progress with her, he acts as the ambassador. Willowpaw and Jaypaw have a rocky road to building a friendship. But in the end they manage to become verbal sparing partners. Argument and debate are how they pass the time and bond. Kestrelflight has to constantly reassure everyone they do, in fact, get along.

Another way I really like for the Kestrelpaw & Jaypaw dynamic to develop is what I did on this other fic that's been since privated but which I want to rewrite eventually. In this Jaypaw gets the meddie position by being an absolute insufferable BRAT to Leafpool because he thinks he's entitled to it over Hollypaw. When he eventually breaks her he's already made quite the reputation for himself.

Willowpaw is quite harsh and antagonistic to him from the get go over the slight to her friend Hollypaw and thus Jaypaw ends up quite isolated. He and Kestrelpaw begin interacting because he pities him, essentially. But soon enough the kindness brings about in Jaypaw a desire to repair his relationship with his siblings and better himself as a person.

In the end they end up in a clandestine meddie relationship. All because Kestrelpaw didn't like seeing him so alone and miserable.

Finally! With regards to the way I like to fill out the details of his ascent to full meddie. As I said before the story implied in how even though he's older than Jaypaw by all canon evidence but doesn't get named until the allegiances of the first book in OotS, the first chapter of which has an announcement of Barkface's death, fascinates me.

Being unintelligent is something that's commented on in the narration and the fact he does not have a full name until after Barkface is dead to me imply very clearly he was only promoted of necessity. Even if by Clan culture he would be adult aged twice over he was not ready to handle the responsibility on his own.

I hesistate to name any learning disability in specific, but I think it's a combination of that and a general immature personality. I like to think he cherished having an extended childhood/adolescence and didn't want to ever grow up. Even if he would have to eventually because Barkface is old and won't live forever.

The 6 month timeskip between Po3 and OotS really lend themselves to having these circumstances that necessitated his premature promotion be really tragic. This is why I pin Barkface's cause of death as a terminal disease. Alzheimer's is a really good suggestion I was given and I still have to research that some more before I get to write this fic.

I also like to think that in this timeframe he got to make friends with the other apprentice in their little grouping, Flamepaw. Willowshine and Jayfeather are already full meddies and in many ways dealing with a lot more responsibility than even Kestrelpaw's care of Barkface. I feel that Barkface's impending death would put the contrast between them in sharp focus and make him more likely to bond with someone still firmly in the "kid" camp of this liminal time he's going through.

And that's about it for my thoughts (he says, having written over 1100 words). Hope it was a fun peek into my thought process and why I rotate this bird boy so much in my mind.

Meddie friendship fic - Eddie and Maddie have a monthly drink and bitch night together, one night they end up talking about exes and Maddie casually mentions that Buck had an ex boyfriend/has ex boyfriends, and Eddie has an Italics Oh moment when he realises he may have a shot.

Angsty McFight fic - Buck needs time away from his safety net of people, so that he can just be with himself and figure some shit out *coughhisfeelingscough*. Eddie, bless him, does not take it well, and then everything goes to hell.

No Nut November fic - this one is making the rounds on tumblr, and the idea tickled me. My version would have Eddie flirting shamelessly with Buck, at first with no idea of Buck's bet with Albert, and then turning it to 11 once he does find out.

words and deeds sequel - established relationship fluffiness which can be read as a standalone, but it technically a sequel to this fic.

Undercover poker fic - did I start this one before The Episode? Yes. Am I going to tweak it and finish it? Hopefully. Athena asks Buddie to go under cover, shenanigans ensue. Think the scene in Casino Royale when Vesper walks in and distracts Bond instead of his opponent.

Marriage of State AU Fic Titles: Theories & Responses

@fanny-passerine I am absolutely blown away by how much thought and effort you put into this and it's getting it's own post because the original was getting a bit long XD

Also I do have more than this planned, i just also have a couple that are currently basically titled "Character X Does Y" right now as place holders because I have no idea what I want to title them.

An Unexpected Adventure -> this one is kind of vague, but I think it may be able being lost somewhere with people the narrator/main character usually doesn't hang out with ! In a strange situation probably. It may be something dumb that caused this adventure.

It is a bit vague, that one is one of the fic titles that was less set in stone, it was basically a mishmash of the memed line from the Hobbit movie "I'm going on an adventure!" and the first chapter title of the Hobbit Book "An Unexpected Party" I actually had a worldbuilding development while rubber-ducking at a friend that has completely changed the tone of the events of this particular one so it is probably going to be renamed. But it absolutely is and was something dumb that caused this adventure XD

Down in the Meadow in the Itty Bitty Pool -> I had to search for this one because I'm french soooo cultural differences but it's a reference to a children song about three little fishes and their mother fish, and from what I get the three little fishes want to have fun without caring about consequences (like all kids) and the mother is scared they'll get lost. Then the little fishes almost get eaten. So they go back to their mother.

(I honestly think most knew about this one but I didn't so! There was a recap)

So yeah, with all the fishes I would have thought it was about the seablings, but at the same time there's 3 little fishes, not 2... But on the other hand, Jimmy is always presented as hot-blooded and fast to take decisions, from what I've seen. So my guess is that Lizzie is the mother fish and that Jimmy is the little fish wanting some freedom but putting himself in danger by doing so.

It is from that nursery song, tho I think a simplified version (and also the version I learned when I was small was very dialectal and I had to very carefully type the title so I didn't type "down by the meddy in the itty bitty poo") The relevant parts for the fic are that it's a kids song and about fish in water.

Mistakes were made -> this one is gonna be about a quiproquo, I think. Maybe due to cultural differences. There must be many of them, especially with arranged marriage, so that's my guess. Or someone is gonna fall in love when they didn't plan on doing so (who does, honestly, but I'm more talking about a "them? Oh I'm fucked" moment).

The ending moments of this one are definitely "Oh I'm fucked" in vibes that's for sure, though not romantically coded in anyway. This one is a short one-shot featuring mostly Sausage and Shrub.

My Brothers Keeper -> I think it's from either from Lizzie's pov, Gem's pov, Scott's pov or Xornoth's pov, because they all have brothers, and we're talking about "my brothers keeper"...

This was the second concept i came up with for this specific au, Xornoth's backstory.

Peace in our Time -> okay isn't Katherine kingdom all about peace and negociations, or is that only a fanon belief ? So maybe that's a fic about Katherine's thoughts on being the peaceful one, hoping to achieve peace in her time ? Not my most creative guess (as if they were creative honestly) but I think it might be that.

Katherine's thing is neutrality, more than peace. Peace is mentioned of course and is a priority but her primary focus is staying out of conflicts. This is one of the titles I'm a little less certain of and am kind of hoping a better one will come to me as i actually write it, it's the Flower Husband's fic.

Rose of Fire -> Fwhip, Gem, Pearl or Sausage ! With the Wither Rose alliance. I've got a feeling it may be more about Fwhip, though. Don't ask me why. It's just a feeling.

We're All Mad Here -> now that's a reference to Alice in Wonderland. The Mad Hatter says that about the Wonderland, I believe. Sooo it could refer to a strange empire. My guess kind of is Joey and Xornoth ? Their relationship. In canon, it's quite intense. Or Joel maybe ? With the idea that all his inhabitants are statues made in his image, it's quite... Crazy, and uncanny when you think about it. Though I don't know if it's canon on this au.

My one sentence summary for this one is "Joel, Pixlriffs, and the Consequences of Immortality Where it was Never Meant to Be"
