The Journal

Summary: You work IT for the GAR, and through that you met Sev, the actual love of your life. Only, because he doesn't know you exist, you spend your time sketching and writing sippets about him. One night, he sees your journal.

A/N: I hope this is close to what you wanted? I kept starting it and then having to change things to make the plot work.

You bit your lower lip as you read over the sentence you just wrote, considering your word usage critically. It’s always important to make sure that the words flow properly, even though you’re the only person who’s ever going to read it.

What you’re doing is weird.

It is. You know it, but you can’t help yourself.

After all, it’s not like Sev would ever deign to look at you…let alone do anything that you fantasize about with you.

Which means that your own release is by sketching scenes, and then writing the scenes that you sketched.

It’s awful and humiliating. But since it’s just you, and since you’re so very careful about making sure that your sketchbook is always safe, then you don’t mind half as much as you normally would.

You critically eye the words again.

Sev slides his hands down your sides, whispered praises falling from his lips as you sink down his hard length, his pupils flared with arousal-

Ugh. It’s garbage. 

Utter trash.

You erase some of the words, consider for a moment, and then write them again.

It’s still trash, but your brain doesn’t seem to have the right words at the moment. Maybe you need to take a break. You set the protector over the pencil drawing, and snap your sketchbook shut, and you slide it into your work bag absently.

Maybe you’ll have the words after a long night of night shift work.

Probably not, you have to replace and update all of the computers on base tonight.

You quickly check to make sure that your uniform is clean and neat looking, and then you grab your bag and your datapad, and you head out the apartment.

You live close enough to base that you can walk, and, honestly, you couldn’t catch a cab at this time of night anyway. Not to mention, the walk helps clear your mind and prepares you for the night you’re about to have.

As soon as you’re on base, you make your way to the office all of IT has to share, set your bag on your desk, and grab your datapad. Your office mate Holly, the other member of IT who drew the short straw for the overhaul, greets you with a tired smile.

“Are you ready?” She asks as she pulls her long blonde hair into a tail.

“Does it matter if I’m not?” You ask with an amused grin as you stick a pen in your hair.

“Not at all,” Holly replies with a laugh. “Come on, I have the key to where they’re keeping the new computers.”

“I don’t suppose the boss told you what to do with the old computers?” You ask dryly as you trail after her down the hall.

“He said, quote, “you know what to do you stupid girl” end quote.” Holly replies with a roll of her eyes, “So I’m guessing we need to stack the old computers where the new ones are.”

“Makes sense.”

Holly leads you through the winding halls, until she stops at the storage room door, and she checks her datapad. “Um…here, this is the one.” She waves the keycard over the panel and keys in the door code, and you push the door open and peer into the room.

“Hm.”

“What?”

“There are a lot of computers here.” You say with a sigh.

Holly peers over your shoulder, and she sighs as well. “We might as well start loading up carts.”

Three hours later, you’re alone in the IT office, working on disconnecting the computers and hooking up the new ones, when the door opens. “IT is closed for the night,” You say, your voice muffled since you’re under a desk. “Oh, come on, disconnect you stupid piece of-”

“I know,” The deep voice of Sev startles you enough that you pull yourself out from under your desk, “I was just coming to check on you, since Miss Holly nearly fell off her ladder.”

“Oh. Well I’m not doing any of the ladder work, I have a thing.”

“A thing?”

“About heights. And falling.”

He chuckles, “Reasonable,” He looks around the room, “You need any help with anything?”

“...can you put that box on my cart for me?”

Sev chuckles again, “Yeah, I have you mesh’la.” He picks up the box, which has an old computer in it, and moves it to the cart, bumping your desk as he does so.

Just as Sev turns to leave the room, he pauses. “Huh, looks like someone lost their journal.”

“Journal?” You glance at him, and then pale when you see your sketchbook in his hands, “Ah! Wait! That’s mine…and it’s personal-” He flips open the journal and you feel a hot flush of shame.

With him wearing his helmet, you have no way to know what he’s thinking, though you’re not sure you’d be able to tell even if he wasn’t wearing his helmet. 

“I…I can explain-” You offer weakly, but you trail off, because you don’t have an explanation. Not a good one, at least. 

Sev’s shifts slightly, and you have the feeling that he’s staring at you, “Can I hold onto this?”

“I’d…rather you didn’t.”

“What if I promise that I’m the only one who will see it?”

You hesitate, “Are you confiscating it?” You ask anxiously.

“No.” His voice is surprisingly gentle, “I promise you’ll get it back in the same condition as it is now.”

“...okay.” The sketchbook vanishes into one of his many pockets, and then Sev is gone, and you are stuck trying to finish the overhaul while knowing that the man that you’ve been crushing on, and fantasizing over, now has access to all of your fantasies.

Needless to say, you’re a little anxious.

Three days later, you’re still really anxious. 100% because Sev still hasn’t returned your sketchbook to you and while you were worried before, it’s been ramped up. A lot.

So when you get a visitor when you’re working on a commission for someone, your heart drops. 

You check to see who’s there, and when you see Sev, you get even more nervous, your mind running though dozens of different scenarios, all of them worse than the one before it.

But, slowly, you open the door. 

“Um…Hi.”

He’s dressed in casual clothes today, and while normally that would be something for you to enjoy, you’re far too anxious to actually enjoy it.

He gazes at you for a moment, “Can I come in?”

“Ah, yes. Sorry,” You move to the side and he steps into your apartment. You shut the door behind him, and then nervously step around him, “Can I get you something?”

Sev is quiet for a moment, his gaze flickering around your apartment. It’s covered in various pieces of artwork that you’ve done, and then he looks at you and offers you your notebook. “Sorry it took me so long to return it.”

You take the journal back and fold your arms around it, “Um…you’re not…mad?”

“No.”

“Uh…that’s good, but why?”

He folds his arms over his chest, “Why would I be?”

You glance down at the notebook, and then back at him, slightly lost, “Uh…you did see some of the things I sketched, right?”

“I did. I looked at all of it.” Sev replies, and then a slow grin crosses his face, “Like I said, it’s in the same condition you gave it to me in. But, I did add a page, you should take a look.”

You watch him suspiciously, but open the journal, flipping until you find the loose page he’s talking about. It takes you a moment to recognize what you’re looking at, but then your face flames.

It’s you. And him. With him balls deep inside you.

You turn your wide gaze up to Sev, and he smirks, “What, you thought you were the only one with seemingly impossible fantasies?”

You glance back at the picture, “Seemingly impossible?”

“Sure, why would a pretty thing like you be interested in a mere clone?”

Your head snaps up, “I have never thought that! Ever!” 

Sev smirks and takes a step closer to you, before he carefully flips to another page, where a nearly identical picture to the one that he sketched sits on the page, “I know that now. You didn’t get my tattoos, but that’s okay, you’ve never seen me shirtless. Yet.”

“Yet?”

His gaze is very intense, “Yet.” Sev agrees, “Unless you’d rather wait before we make any of these,” He taps the journal, “Come true.”

“I think I missed a whole part of this conversation,” You finally say.

Sev chuckles and takes your journal from your hands, tossing it on the table in the middle of the room, and then he pins you against the wall with his arm folded over your head. 

He lowers his head so that you can feel his breath against your skin, “I’m saying,” Sev murmurs, “That I feel the same way about you as you feel about me.” Your lips part, “And I’m saying that I want to make all of those fantasies come true.”

He lowers his head so that his lips are right over yours, “What do you say, sarad?”

You blink at him, and then lean up to catch his lips with yours.

You feel him grin as he presses against you, and then he nips your lower lip and soothes the spot with his tongue. 

Sev kisses with the same intensity that he does everything, and you’re not really surprised when you feel his hands dipping under your clothes to caress your bare skin. 

He lifts you with ease, and encourages you to wrap your legs around his waist. “Where’s your bedroom, sarad?” Sev asks, his voice a low rumble.

“Down the hall, first door on the left.”

Sev catches your lips with his again as he walks down the hall and pushes your bedroom door open. He lays you down on your bed and follows you down, kneeling between your spread legs, before he breaks the kiss.

He pulls his shirt off, and immediately pulls your hands to his chest, and you take the opportunity to explore him with great enthusiasm. He kisses you again as you explore him with your fingers, realizing that you’re going to need to wait before you can explore him with your eyes.

“Before we go any further,” Sev murmurs against your lips, “I want to know-”

“Yes?”

“Is this going to be a one time thing, or is it going to be a relationship?”

It takes you a moment to process the question, “Why?”

“Because I’m going to fuck my girlfriend a hell of a lot differently than I’m going to fuck a one night stand.” Sev sucks a mark high on your neck, “Take your pick, sarad.”

“I’d like to be your girlfriend,” You say through a quiet moan as he sucks another mark onto your neck.

Sev grins, “A good choice.” He tugs on your shirt, “Strip, sarad. I’m going to make you feel amazing.”

So, you marry and have children, to keep your legacy alive. Then as an Elder you quit being a writer and become a businessperson. To pass down your billions to your children so that they may. Keep your family's fame and fortune going for generations.

You act out even worse than you did as a teen because of this. You go on to become a villainous valentine who ends up pregnant and alone.

You have made your own riches doing what you love. Making soda for everyone to sip and enjoy. You ticked that off your bucket list. But now still one thing remains children to carry on the cola’s legacy. So, you rush and marry have children. But soon as you're an adult. Your business is no longer your passion family is. So, you sell your retail store where you sold the cola. To provide an even better life for you and your family.

So, you make lots of enemies with people who try to fix the apocalyptic world. You control them by using a voodoo doll. The alien who started it all asks you to assist them by using a cloning machine. Hidden away in your old industrial house. Now the alien is satisfied with you. But they ask you to surrender yourself to it so that it can repopulate. Strangerville with more messed-up doctors who will keep the end of the world going. You agree and have children with the alien then accept your fate by the Mother!

Writing Update 9/19/2024

Been a while since I did an update! Last week I was on jury duty and it MURDERED my writing time as I had to change up my day and it took longer to get home (mentally draining....)

Been back at work this week, but still has been draining, so less time to get things done, but trying to get back into the flow of things! Hopefully more updates to show soon!

I will get back to those as soon as I clear up some other fics. Just got a lot of long fics (12 in total) and one-shots (like ...5 in total?) that I'm writing and want to finish!

Can't Help a Cuddle: It has 5k words in and that is just the spicy scene it is going to open up with lol It is going to end up being a long chapter as it introduces more plot and the like going forward! Hopefully will be updating soon!

Jealousy is Not a Good Friend: Also have it outlined and making good progress on writing it out so it should come out the same time or before Cuddle. Got some spice as always!

Playing House: Sukuita fic where Sukuna makes Yuuji play house like they did when kids but takes it too far. A pwp fic idea suggested when I was in the mood and is close to being done c:

Take Me to Prom?: Sukita one shot where Yuuji blackmails his cousin Sukuna to cross dress and take him to prom as his date. Shenanigans ensue

Once Upon a Blob: Sukuna, now Blobkuna, has a plan to get his body back and it involves the old fairy tale cliche of love's true kiss. Chaos ensures.

And That's When I knew It: A silly Uraraka/Kirishima one-shot where something horribly embarrassing happens and feelings are had (and spice XD)

FUTURE FANFICS IN PROGRESS

Culturally Inappropriate: Starting to outline the fic and name the characters who are going to be with Yuuji through the Possessed Anonymous group. Letting it build its own themes and feeling good about it so far!

This is the sequel to Historically Inaccurate and keeps moving with the themes and Sukuna and Yuuji building their relationship as vessel and and cursed spirit while also their personal healing. Gonna be good hopefully!

Law Meets Disorder: (Maybe changing to Law and Disorder for the title) Still mapping out my ideas but might get to finally finishing up the outline soon!

The Dragon Story: Still more an idea with more worldbuilding done than plot. Need to find a solid plot for it....

✅ - ohgaaaaawd uh I'm very bad at harvesting my own glimmers but I'm gonna harvest some from notes I've gotten from other folks bc I trust other folks taste over my own any day of the week:

Glimmer from the most recent Sascha fic:

Eroded molars plucked like pomegranate seeds and summarily replaced with brighter pearls.

Idk I really like how this sentence shook out it's info dense while still retaining an easy, readable flow. Also tips its hat on the kitbashing going on without being obvious so it'll be a fun thing to pick up upon a second or third read (I think)! Because I'm one of those annoying people who likes reading/writing things that require several passes to get the full picture.

Glimmer from Limits:

Either post was crafted to mimic the trees they were gored from, the arc of the back panel--branches that tangled and fused at its center. Wildlife roiled behind the broad leaves–[Ana] had spent hours while she was young sprawled out on the bed, tracing her fingertips across every twig-clutching talon and leaf-stem coiling mousetail. Pressing her fingers into the two ragged, unvarnished gashes that tore into the falcon roosted in the top right corner. To this day, she does not know what put those there–Kliment would never tell.

okay cheating this is a full passage not a single line, but I'm particularly proud of this description of Ana and Roman's headboard from the second chapter of Limits so full excerpt be upon ye! And yes the tenses are weird but Memorium can be like that sometimes (says the editor-less writer)

🎶 - I'm hugely reliant on music!! I create playlists for all my projects, and the majority of my music listening habits are more or less informed by whatever I'm writing/drafting on a particular day. All my playlists are in tatters because I'm in the middle of yet another spotify playlist overhaul but here's an ole reliable I recently updated for some Ana/Roman oneshots that will hopefully see the light of day eventually:

🤔 - I got two different answers! One more general and one more fic- specific. So two answers for the price of one! General: I've been writing since literally I was old enough to hold a pencil/sit at a keyboard. So I don't really have an answer outside of "well I also eat and sleep so yeah I write" it's just something I do whether I set out to do it or not. Even if I go years without publishing/posting/producing, I usually have several WIPs floating around for me to peck away at and manage sanity. Fan/Fic: Usually a good setting is enough for me to spin out fic! I don't typically write canon characters unless they become an Intense Blorbo where I feel like I have something to add to the greater blorbo-sphere. Currently I don't really have any of those outside of stray Sascha concept that I've got cooking out back. But yeah if I come across a setting that strikes me, OCs will just start spawning naturally so I write fic to wrangle those OCs.

⛔️ - If I'm writing canon characters for a specific fandom, I try to limit the number of "Big Names" in the piece bc nothing's more annoying that reading a fic tagged with a specific character only for said character to be around for three paragraphs as a contact/side mission. If there's a bit part to be played, give it to nameless rando 172 and if he grows a personality great! I now have a shiny new OC people can get to know! But like if you have a vamp fic and you need a Nos contact maybe give Mr. Tung a break he has enough going on in SoCal he doesn't need to be bothered with breadbasket intel unless he absolutely has to, give that job to a bright-eyed Nos upstart with a cool pet rat named Pichu and let that fun lil gal bounce off the Big Wigs in the fic. Makes the story more accessible to folks who are new to the fandom/lore as well as something new for the old heads if executed with care. Win-win! I hope!

Etsy Deletes the Reselling and Gift Baskets Legal Policies In Favour of New "Creativity Standards"

This morning (July 9, 2024) Etsy released several announcements regarding what can be sold on Etsy, new categorizations for items sold on Etsy, and a new ad campaign. You can read my early thoughts on that here.

As part of this overhaul, they abolished 2 longstanding site policies, namely the ban on reselling in the handmade category, and the ban on almost all gift baskets containing commercial goods. Since they deleted those pages and didn't even mention those rules in any of their announcements, I have preserved those now-dead policies below. Thanks to Bing for still having caches of deleted pages!

I'm Cat [she/her | aroace] and I write sci-fi and fantasy with a dose of cosmic horror. I love mixing genres and general experimentation. Whether my work is marketable or not is less important than having fun. My absolute favorite things are found family, robots, and time travel, and I am a firm believer that platonic relationships can be just as fierce and important as romantic ones. Most of my novels are set within a shared universe I call the Starfish Saga and that's my main focus, though I do have quite a few exciting projects outside that.

I am quite shy but love making new writer friends and am open to tag games and ask games and other sorts of writerly socialization.

rethinking my tumblr, I suppose + new tagging system!

From this entry onwards, I will begin to implement a new and consistent tagging system inspired by what Vylet Pony has done for her tumblr. The basic gist is that:

#ss.spiel will be used for any of the rambles that I make, such as this one

#ss.saga will be used for new uploads, whether it be new YouTube videos or music

#ss.art will be used for drawings that I make

With that out of the way, what exactly do I mean when I say “I’m rethinking my Tumblr”?

Well, very recently I’ve come into grips that my main audience — the people and fans that most interact with me — are all on my YouTube. I wouldn’t really expect an awful ton of them to have twitter or tumblr or bsky accounts for regular use, and so for those platforms, I mainly maintain a presence in there to promote my works and to make connections with mutuals and friends. I also mostly exert a lot of my focus on creating YouTube videos, while on tumblr I just kinda reblog cool things.

It’s for these exact reasons why my tumblr page has been looking VERY different lately. The dashboard design for my page has a new colour palette. My Mint Kirby profile picture — by the talented clownpalette of whom I’m very thankful — is swapped out for Minty Juniper, my ponysona (for clarity’s sake, this is NOT a complete rejection of the Mint Kirby character that I’ve kept up for 5 years). And finally, as I mentioned in an earlier entry, the Twitter aesthetic I had for my blog became dated and bloated and that’s what prompted a simpler overhaul of ScoutSunset.tumblr.com.

All of these changes (well, maybe “almost”, since the PFP change was mostly done out of a whim) reflect a change of strategy for my tumblr presence…or rather a removal of strategy. I’m now more concerned with making my tumblr more personal than trying to make as much impressions on here as possible.

I may somehow have a post of mine pop off randomly, and that’d be OK. But I know where my audience is and where my focus lies upon. That being said, I do appreciate this site — it was fun executing the blog’s new look the way I preferred — and the small interactions I can get from time to time, and I especially appreciate the friends, followers and fans that have stuck around thus far! I hope this entry wasn’t too intimidating and that you understand. I love y’all.

Welcome to Spiral Abyss!

This event will run until September 30th and feature three floors of combat, each divided into two waves. You have been assigned a team of allies to traverse these floors with and will get progressively stronger as you continue. Here's how to get started:

Take a look at our Combat Handbook. If you've seen it before, look again. It's been completely overhauled, and changes have been made as well as explanations and further details added for the more complex aspects of our system. Familiarize yourself with this, and reference it regularly throughout the event.

Check your team assignments here. This document will show both your team and their abilities as well as the enemies you will be facing. Please copy and paste your team's section into a new document to be shared in your team chat.

The provided enemies are for Wave 1. When either side of the fight (enemies or allies) have all reached 0HP, please ping a mod in your team channel. We will update the main doc with your next wave of enemies. If your team wipes, you will all be revived at full HP upon the start of Wave 2. There is no penalty for not completing either wave, and combat will immediately end at 11:59 PM EST on the last day of the floor.

Here is the general schedule for floors:

Floor 1: September 16th - 19th Floor 2: September 21st - 24th Floor 3: September 26 - 30th

Combat will be written in a thread on the dashboard, with one thread for each floor. Replies are expected to be short in order to maintain the fast paced nature of this event. To this effect, teams should not go more than 12 hours without a post to the thread. Please communicate availability regularly with your teammates and be ready to change turn orders based on it. Activity will be monitored and members who are regularly delaying their team's progress may be subject to removal from the event and forfeiting of prizes.

As a reminder: all kits are subject to changes after being tested. If there is something you find that you dislike or believe should be different about how your character plays, please make note of this for the feedback form at the event's end. This event is meant to test all aspects of this system, it is expected that there will be kinks and flaws.

If you have any questions, please reference the Abyss specific questions channel in the group's server. Every team has at least one mod on it, but if yours is unavailable do not hesitate to ping another!

In April, we finally completed a pass rewriting plagiarism in all articles that were discovered and tagged as having copied text from episode transcripts. We plan to make another scan in the future comparing articles to episode transcripts to catch any we missed tagging in the first round, but we are ecstatic to have completed this pass.

Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities was overhauled in anticipation of the upcoming release of The Mighty Nein Origins: Mollymauk Tealeaf, part of an overall effort to polish articles known to be or believed potentially relevant to the comic.

In miscellaneous articles, which may not be relevant to current releases but remain very important to our wiki, Rockguard Garrison and Ruhn-Shak were updated and untagged as stubs, and Talks Machina 49: Curious Beginnings and 50: A Show of Scrutiny now document all answers.

We look forward to what May brings in new releases of Campaign 3, of Midst, and of Mighty Nein Origins.

New Site Revamp! (+Updates)

Hi! This site hasn't been all that active in a while since I've focused on other interests. Nothing too bad, but if anything, it's helped me learn that being engaged in other interests helps with getting burnt out less.

With that being said, I have a lot of things to say, so as usual, everything else is under the cut.

Site Overhauls

Since releasing my DiffSinger voicebanks, I figured that this site needed a major revamp, and I've been working on it on-and-off when it came to figuring out which theme I wanted to go with. It took a couple of tries to get the theme I wanted, but I've settled with the Vermillion theme from ricecodes. It's responsive, has a dark/light mode, has an all-in-one sidebar for important information, and many more features ^^

I have also removed any unnecessary pages from the site to make it less cluttered. We also moved (most of) the Frequently Asked Questions page to the Ask tab for easier access. Additionally, the Terms of Service page has been renamed to Guidelines, but still need to be followed in order to use the voicebanks and resources hosted on this site. The Menu tab now has a directory of pages and tags via the Navigation section, and an Affiliates section.

Also, Maria and Mario's trivia sections in their character profile pages have been revamped to keep up to date with their current lore.

I would like to announce that affiliate applications are now open! If you so happen to manage your own voicebanks (regardless of platform), have a website dedicated to said voicebanks, and are at least acquaintances/mutuals with HIRATELIER, you are qualified to apply. DiffSinger Updates

The 1.1.0 update for Fuwa Maria and Fuwa Mario's DiffSinger voicebanks is on the way! I'm not sure when that will happen, but if anything, it could release before or on their 10th anniversary. New updates with DiffSinger mainly have to do with the VR tension parameter option and proper multilingual (XLS) implementation, and there could be more coming in the future.

I'm still in the process of labeling new data for Maria and Mario's datasets, each with 8 new songs. They contain a mixture of strong singing (mostly to further improve their power vocal modes and range) and English singing (to also improve their English pronunciation). There's also a possibility that they may support newer languages via parallel training, and if possible, I would like to implement Tagalog, Chinese and Korean support.

10th Anniversary Plans

Maria and Mario's 10th anniversary is next year, and I have some big plans for it...if everything goes to plan. So far, you can expect the following things once it's their anniversary:

Newly revamped fullbody illustrations for UTAU and DiffSinger (+ new designs...?)

New graphics

Cover + PV

BUT...for the first time in AUSPICIOUS VOICE's history, I'll be celebrating Maria and Mario's half-anniversary, which will be on October 3! It probably won't be as big as the actual anniversary itself, but you can expect a cover, or art, or even both of them. It entirely depends on my time and energy.

I've got a lot on my plate when it comes to juggling a bunch of personal projects, but here's to hoping I can get through all of them without burning myself out.

Thanks for 150 Followers + upcoming plans for this blog!!

Hey everyone!! Thank you for over 150 followers on Tumblr! Although I really should've have made this kind of post at 100, haha. I'm very surprised by the attention that has managed to gather ever since starting this blog. 150 followers may not seem like a whole lot, but that's 150 people who I have achieved my goal with: informing others providing accessible means of official Hetalia news and more!

Thank you so much once again! I'll do my best to keep posting consistently and updating. It's been such a huge pleasure to help serve the community thus far! For 150 followers, I'll be celebrating by posting future plans that will soon be implemented onto the blog! If you are interested, please feel free to expand by the post below.

Proper Tagging and Formatting: This is the one that has bothered me the most by far. For several of my posts thus far, there has been inconsistencies on the tagging and formatting of my posts. I'll be going back and doing a large clean up to set a standard on format depending on the type of post (merchandise, manga, Hetamyu). Alongside with fixing tags and putting up new ones so that archiving and filtering this blog will be easier and dependable for any future use.

Second blog: I would also like to make a second account in the future for both Tumblr and Youtube made for archiving any official Hetalia content. The main blog (this one) serves as a news/information/educational source (alongside with my own general fanart), it will not suffice for major archiving. The hope is that the archival blog will be up-to-date with all official Hetalia content still remaining and providing that accessibility of the content to the fandom. This one will be a tedious project, as trying to archive over 15+ years of Hetalia content is absolutely a lot harder than simply reporting the news. So bear with me here as this will be its own project that will take its time.

Future projects: Still haven't forgotten about the flower project and more! Those are its own tedious tasks with a lot of research required and executing. Right now, I'm also working on a project documenting all Hetalia birthdays for all the major characters from the series and hopefully that will be shared soon! Special thanks to @arumidden on helping me with both of these projects so far and doing so, so much work for it. They've done a lot more work than I can put into words and I'm genuinely so grateful

Blog overhaul: There is a severe lack of design and customization within the blog and all the accounts. After the flowers and birthday projects are out of the way, I'll be make custom art and fixing up custom designs for the blog! Alongside with setting up pages with its own dedicated category, FAQ, and more! Stay tuned!

That's a lot and quite a bit ambitious, but it was really exciting to share my plans for the future! Please patient as the projects and blog continues to be developed and hopefully you can around the news that will keep being posted as well! Banda's Grove Overhaul Devlog - Design, Maps, and Terminology

This will be a series of design deep dives. We want to share not just what we're changing about the game, but why we're changing it. Perhaps it could help someone in the future. I'll be using "#banda's grove overhaul" tag in each post if you would like to follow along.

Page Design

Check out the images if you want an idea of what Banda Grove's current rules are. This isn’t final text in the v2 image by any means, but we’re walking down the path of making new master pages for layout.

A Refreshed Color Palette

The background color is lightened up, and the vibrancy of all the colors is increased just a little bit for further contrast. We played around with changing the palette completely, but after a couple of hours of going back and forth, we decided to tweak the existing one because it feels unique and iconic to BG now.

New and more fonts

We stuck with Oil Can as the header and title font after looking at a ton of different options. This is a special font for me because it is no longer available from Lost Type co-op and hasn’t been for almost a decade now. Back when we started this project, I emailed them to get reconfirmation of a commercial use. I covet and backup the .otf file religiously. That certainly increases the likelihood this will remain a unique look.

But for the body text, we’ve swapped out Courier Prime with three fonts, two of them are on display here. The Paragraph is Bitter from Google Fonts, while the in-game handwriting is KH Sober Draftsman from Kern + Hide.

The callout boxes (post-it notes) in the game will use Ultra-Classified by Kern + Hide - this wonderfully jaunty typewriter/newsprint type of font.

We will be working with columns where it makes sense, but there will be a mix.

This is all to give the book a cleaner, easily readable interior. Previously, I was using different colored callout boxes to differentiate between “in world” notes from Ranger Murie, and game text. Now, however, we can represent that by font styles, which keeps the pages a bit more tidy.

The rectangle and pink triangle in the header is an anchor design and be used throughout everything to tie things together.

Maps, Mapping, and Hexes

We’ve been working the last few days on the mapping system in Banda’s Grove. Please note, things are still influx, and may change more.

Mapping in Banda’s Grove has been tedious at best from the very beginning. It originally had a tetris-style chunk of hexes you could lay down on a massive hex grid. That was replaced with a simpler 19 hex flower, and you started by building out 7 of them to start. But each individual hex also had its detail map of another 7 hexes to track little details. This was a lot to manage, to say the least, and made online games dang near impossible.

I had a big conversation today with another designer on the purpose of a hex on a map, and Banda’s Grove does not have any travel or time mechanics tied to traversing a hex. It is not a hex crawl or point crawl. The purpose of the map is to draw, sketch, and laugh together when you talk about the worlds you’re building.

So, we are getting rid of hex grid and detail maps entirely.

Instead, we are working on implementing a single free form map, plus a shared notebook. We’ll still provide a themed map, but players can also just use the biggest piece of paper they can get their hands on to draw the twisting, winding, Planes converging at the Grove. Players still draw together with Jamboard, Figjam, tldraw, aggie.io, or Miro for online games, or ignore the map aspect completely.

We’ll provide tips on how to setup your shared notebook or gdoc and offer optional templates in PDF and .gdoc formats. We’re investigating other online worldbuilding tools to build templates for them as well.

This change has an additional upside: We can remove an entire technical term from the game, reducing jargon and confusion.

Before, we used the word “Fragment” to denote we were talking about a hex tile in general, and “Plane” to talk about the biome and culture on that Fragment. The word Fragment has now been completely removed from the game, and we only have Planes.

As an example, Maps in Banda’s Grove will become more free form like this, rather than the more bounded hex grid style. And no, I cannot draw. This is why I hire artists!

And this actually opens up some interesting possibilities for using mechanics to add limits, encouraging players to use the Convergence Event move, which also risks adding blips to the map, which in turn causes more narrative friction.

I’m playing with limiting the number of facilities you can build on a single Plane - we have to make sure we don’t overcrowd the environment! However, now a Convergence Event can add a new Plane you come up with yourself, or expand an existing Plane (you still need to roll to see which Plane is extended). Extending a Plane doesn’t add any new overhead to your note-taking now. You just continue adding details and notes under the “Cluthar” section.

When blips occur, you still roll a pebble over the map, and the Plane it lands on becomes shrouded in primordial darkness and is unavailable until mended.

Actions, Phases, & Quantum Events

First, let’s discuss a quick term rename I did. We mistakenly used the name “Action” to represent the special abilities of a playbook, facility, or downtime phase that cost a pebble to use. These are now called Moves. This will free up the word “action” for another mechanic to reduce confusion further.

The other piece I’ve been working on is how Phases work. Phases were always meant to represent the passage of a week, but their naming and how I implemented them muddled that, and it was… confusing at best.

I’ve always had this idea that the “Downtime” phase was the weekday, that’s why you have 5 actions to take. One for each day of the week.

The Update Phase was supposed to represent Sunday Evening, when you’re settling in and taking a moment to prepare for the weekday.

And the Quantum Event phase, was meant to be the weekend, a time of adventure, and shenanigans around the campgrounds.

The phases and quantum events have been renamed to reinforce that weekly cycle concept fully:

The Weekday - You take 5 Weekday Actions. You can spend pebbles to perform Weekday, Playbook or Facility moves, or have slice of life roleplay scenes to gain pebbles.

The Weekend - This is when you go on Weekend Adventures! Time to get into and out of trouble, help peoples, and discover hidden mysteries.

Sunday Night - This is the time to settle in after your big adventures, take stock, reduce your dice, and prepare for the Weekday.

Even though these are just terminology changes, they help reinforce the concepts of the gameplay loop, what it means, and connect the mechanical concepts together better.

And speaking of the Weekday Phase, we have simplified the “Downtime Actions” (now called Weekday Moves). Before, you had Downtime Actions. Some were nestled under a “Grove Projects” action, which itself was several possible actions. Wow, that’s confusing. That is all rewritten and organized, so there’s no nesting. Just a list of comprehensive Weekday Moves now.

Because The Weekend is a cleanly defined phase of free form adventuring and roleplay, but with the limitation of not being able to use Weekday or Facility moves, I can also organize gameplay better.

The biggest one here is Events (previously “Festivals” & “Special Events”, also simplified). They were always a free form adventure. They were designed as roleplay heavy, low stress, celebratory “Quantum Events” with boons and bonuses for your efforts - they have an introduction, complications, and your reward for participating.

But, they didn’t really fit in the Weekday phase’s gameplay, where they currently take place. But that’s where they had to live because The Quantum Event Phase was for Quantum Event. As written, it didn’t leave room for anything else.

Now the Weekend is a phase of adventuring where you just can’t use Weekday or Facility Moves, only your Playbook Moves, inventory, and wit. By default, a Weekend Adventure takes place - either one we wrote, or one you create.

However, now an Event can replace that Weekend’s Adventure. There are some Facility Moves that also initiate Events, like putting on a play at the Stage. That will take place during the Weekend in lieu of a Weekend Adventure now as well.

All these little tweaks and changes are to streamline and organize play, reduce jargon and drastically increase clarity.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Gets Aurora Colour Variant At Rs 2.20 Lakh

Royal Enfield has widened the Meteor 350 range by launching the new Aurora variant of the cruiser.

It gets a couple of changes over other variants of the bike and comes with a price tag of Rs. 2,19,900 (ex-showroom, Chennai) which places it between the Stellar and Supernova trims of the Meteor 350.

RE Meteor 350 Thoroughly Overhauled

The new Aurora variant of the Meteor 350 comes equipped with spoke wheels and tube tyres, unlike other versions which get alloy wheels and tubeless rubbers.

Moreover, the engine case, exhaust system, and a few other components have been bestowed with chrome finishing. All of this is done to enhance the retro appeal of the bike.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Aurora continues to receive the same J-series underpinnings, the 349 cc air-cooled, long-stroke engine, with 20.2 bhp and 2.75 kgm of torque, mated to a five-speed transmission.

What’s new with Aurora trim?

The trim introduces three new colourways and also debuts LED headlights to the range. Royal Enfield might make the latter feature standard with this range in the future.

As opposed to black treatment on all other trims, Aurora trim stands out in its classic appeal. RE is also giving Aurora LED headlights, a deluxe touring seat, aluminium switch cubes, a Tripper display for navigation and more.

Feature additions

Apart from adding Aurora trim, Royal Enfield has fettled with Meteor 350’s trim-wise features list too. Top-spec Supernova trim now gets LED headlights and aluminium switchgear, taking it a notch higher than before. Astral trim now gets Royal Enfield’s Tripper screen for navigation as standard fitment.

With base Fireball trim, Royal Enfield has added a new Black stock colour which is both elegant and standard. Powering RE Meteor 350 is a 349cc J-series single-cylinder, air-cooled motor that kicks out 20.2 bhp at 6100rpm and a peak torque of 27 Nm at 4000rpm.

This unit is paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The same powertrain is found on newly launched Bullet 350 too.

Meteor 350 is underpinned by a dual-cradle J-series chassis which is suspended on 41mm RSU telescopic suspension at the front and twin shocks at the rear. Anchorage duties are handled by a 300mm front disc and a 270mm rear disc which are aided by a dual-channel ABS as standard.

In terms of features, it comes with a semi-digital instrument console, a USB charger, circular LED DRL and a side-stand engine inhibitor, among many.
