Continuing my read through the Shadow reprints from Sanctum Press, this volume collects a pair of very different tales. The Black Falcon is very much a tale of straight crime, while The Salamanders features a supervillain with a very distinct gimmick. That these both feel like stories from the same series is a testament to the talents of writer Walter Gibson, and a great example of why I love the Shadow over all other pulp heroes. While many other pulp series I’ve sampled fall into repeating the same formula over & over again (Doc Savage, I’m looking at you) the Shadow features a wide variety of stories, plots, characters and themes. Sigh. I went into 2020 with such high hopes of reading through the reprints of the Shadow. And then pandemic, and then election, and then coup... Trying to get back on track this year, with a greater focus on, rather than a distraction from, the things I enjoy. This volume is of note for a couple of reasons: this is the first reprint volume in this series with a story featuring Margo Lane, and it shows the contrast between the pre-war Shadow and the WWII era version of the character. My way into the series was the DC Shadow comics series, so Margo has always been an important part of the series to me, and I’m happy to read stories with her in them. And reading these reprints, which present the series in non-chronological order, it’s easy to see that the later Shadows show the character as much more human and vulnerable, as opposed to the unstoppable force of nature seen in the pre-war stories. I can definitely see why readers at the time chose Voodoo Master as a favorite Shadow story. It’s so weird and creepy. And what a fantastic cover! Continuing my reading of the Sanctum Press reprints of the Shadow, I find myself confronting head on the issue of inappropriate racial depictions of the past. This is always a problematic issue for me; I don’t want to write it off as “Well, that’s how people were those days,” but I also don’t want to write off works of popular culture because their authors weren’t able to rise above the prevalent (and inappropriate) attitudes of their time. For example, while Gibson’s portrayal of Chinese characters here is hardly enlightened, he does show the Shadow working with Chinese characters here as equals. In other books, one of the Shadow’s agents is a Chinese-American doctor. And, on the whole, he tends to treat women fairly well, as opposed to some of his contemporaries. (Doc Savage and Lester Dent, I am looking at you.) And beyond those issues, these are a pair of fairly gripping crime novels. I had read them before, but had completely forgotten that The Chinese Disks showed a whole new group of agents being brought into the series. When I was a kid, I discovered the Shadow, first as just an image on a pulp cover and then in the old issues of the 1970s DC comics. I would scour used book stores for the relative handful of paperback reprints, but never amassed a complete collection. When Anthony Tollin’s Sanctum Press started reprinting the stories in 2006, I jumped on board. A comprehensive reprinting of the original Shadow stories was something I had been dreaming of for decades. But, for various reasons, I didn’t buy them all faithfully do I still had gaps in my collection. I figured there would always be time to complete the set. In 2019, Tollin announced that he would no longer be able to sell the books after 2020, so I started working hard to complete my collection. Along with that comes a desire to read or reread the series, so I’m starting back with the first Sanctum book.
