“bu…bubu- but they’re just wittle pixels and digital images rwight 🥺” no. we spend hours on gifs or even one singular gif to make edits for FREE on tumblr dot com. name a person who asked us to do this. no one!! exactly!! we make gifs bc its enjoyable and fun but people like reposters suck the fun out of it!!! and do NOT go and tell us that “gifs aren’t that hard to make” baby girl what do u think we do? go online and search for a video downloader and download it at like a crappy 720p and go to like literal ezgif dot com and all the gifs just MAGICALLY have their effects, typography, colouring, blending, animation, quality all up and ready? why dont u try and make a gif. hm.

and also, @ all of you “gif collectors” or some fanfic writers. lemme tell u a secret. an itty bitty secret. did u know… theres this really cool thing called PROPERLY CREDITING? im not talking about a stupid “credits to the owners” no. it isn’t that hard to properly source the creators or accounts.

that wasn’t so hard, hm?

also oh my god, do NOT go around saying you made these gifs when it is so obvious you didn’t. no bff, it isn’t a coincidence we have the same sharpening AND colouring settings.

i know this probably won’t stop all reposters (unfortunately) but i hope those reposters that are reading this realise how messed up stealing gifs are. it isn’t funny or cool to see gifs that you’ve spent so much time on only to be reposted here or on other sites without credit or being claimed as someone elses.

we’re just asking for a proper credit on your post or maybe even stop reposting in whole. im sure you had good intentions in making those posts, but you have to understand how much it hurts. at this point, we have to put our watermarks in the middle of our gifs to avoid people cropping them out.

and please, PLEASE reblog edits. you have no idea how diminishing it is to see such a crappy like to reblog ratio. remember this hellsite has such a crappy algorithm so reblogging is essentially one of the only ways to give posts more traction

AGAIN. dont repost gifs. dont steal gifs without credit. dont belittle gifmakers. just stop being so disrespectful and rude and have a brain for once. thank you for reading.

Please understand that this post isn't meant to call anyone out or make anyone feel bad/defensive for what they've created. It's simply to help artists and editors alike so that they can continue creating things without doing something racist.

We'd also like to heavily recommend researching color theory! This post by amalas-tutorial-and-inspiration shows why color theory is so important, especially in artwork. We often see people unintentionally whitewash characters by highlighting or blending too much, having colors around them that make them look lighter, or not understanding how different lighting affects skin tones. Researching these things can make a very big difference!

And once again, some tips for the road!

If what you created is whitewashed, and especially if someone calls it out, there's no reason to feel defensive or to try and explain yourself. Simply recognize the mistake, delete it, and fix it if you can (and then post the non-whitewashed version). Take responsibility for what you've created, even if it was unintentional.

When coloring Aisha and other black characters, do not make their skin red. When coloring Indigenous characters, do not make their skin red. When coloring Musa and other Asian characters, do not make their skin yellow.

Do not give Black characters "donut lips". Learn to draw thick lips without making them look like a racist caricature.

Don't be afraid to call out whitewashing when you see it! You may always redirect the op to this and other anti-whitewashing posts if you'd like.

Anti-whitewashing photoshop tutorial links!

I've seen a few gifsets recently in some of my fandoms where characters of color have been pretty badly whitewashed, so I thought I'd share a few links to tutorials which have helped me improve the coloring of POC in my gifs.

@usergif is one of my favorite overall giffing resources. They have several tutorials for coloring POC in their resources directory. This tutorial by @mohanas and this tutorial on fixing orange-washing by @maxchapman are the two I turn to most often.

This post by @anissagraces is very detailed, and this tutorial by @mitskeen also includes a link to download the psds used in the post.

In addition to the above links, this post by @evansyhelp contains a downloadable psd with multiple intensity levels for a variety of skintones you can use to enhance/improve your coloring.

Many, many thanks to the creators of the above reference materials who have taken the time to create and share these posts!

I'm a relatively new gif-maker and don't consider myself an expert by any means but am always trying to improve, especially when it comes to respecting the natural skin tone of POC in my gifs. Hopefully some will find these links helpful in doing the same. Feel free to add additional references in the replies or reblogs.

Oooh, my. Now that's a difficult task. How to choose... I love so many stories for so many different reasons. Some writers have found the map to a dangerous shortcut to my heart; some writers string words together in a sentence that wraps around my soul; some writers seem to sit inside my skull, seeing through my own eyes, sharing the scenes I've seen. They're all too powerful, I can't stand against any of them, whatever weapons they have.
