the point of the running up that hill scene in Dear Billy is not just max remembering she is loved, it's her remembering the love she has for others. remembering the happiness she feels when she's with them.
it wasn't lucas's love for max that saved her, it was max's love for lucas. if she didn't love lucas, those memories wouldn't have saved her. the love and happiness wasn't handed to her by lucas, it already existed inside of her.
when, if you don't recall, THEY WEREN'T EVEN DATING.
during mike's monologue, his words should be evoking el's love for him. her memories of him. but nothing comes to her except when they met in the forest, because that's the only thing he says that's based in reality.
and, if el really loved mike, HE WOULDNT HAVE NEEDED TO SAY ANYTHING IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! her love for him, the happiness he brings her would've been enough, requited or not, just like max.
for example, will believes mike does not share his feelings. but it doesn't matter. mike is still the light of his life, mike still gives him strength and makes him happiest. that's because his love for mike is strong on its own.
he doesn't need mike to spell everything out for him, because they have a genuine connection. a connection that doesn't require words to enjoy and understand. i didn't say it. you didn't have to.
i talk a lot about mike not being in love with el, but el is DEFINITELY not in love with mike. and i don't think she ever was.
the party visits Hawkins for the holidays, circa December 1991.
i was lucky enough to get to participate in a secret santa gift exchange along with my friends, some of the most talented people in the stranger things fandom! my recipient was @halosketches, one of the coolest people i know. it was a pleasure to be able to work on this and i'm happy to able to share it now! happy holidays, boys 🫶
Little throwaway line that I always think is cute is when Dustin is trying to calm Eddie down and he’s like “this is my friend max, the one who never wants to play dnd.” And I just think that’s so sweet that Dustin knows Eddie will recognize her name bc he talks about her a lot bc he loves his friends it’s just so cute to me
here is every memory that comes to max in 4x04 when she's being vecna'd
that's 15 different memories that come to her UNPROMPTED
here is every memory that comes to el while she's being choked by vecna, and as her boyfriend is confessing his supposed love to her
one. singular. memory.
all of those memories with mike and she only thinks of one, and it's the one specific thing mike mentioned in his whole 2 minute long monologue
if there were no memories shown in that scene at all i would be a little more reluctant to compare these, but that fact that they show ONE confirms it for me.
because as mike is saying these things she has no memories that match what he is saying. "i love you on your good days and bad days, with your powers without your powers" nothing comes to her. because he's never acted that way to her.
i'm pretty sure that every single person finished season 4 believing that lucas and max are in love. and they never had to say it once. max didn't need lucas to go on a rant about how much he loves her even though they were distant and had issues. all he had to say was "i'm right here" and the happy memories came flooding to her.
and to make it EVEN WORSE.
not even 5 minutes after she hears mike's monologue, this happens:
here is all the memories that come to el when she saves max. and there are also multiple audio clips that play, including "Not Hopper, not Mike, you."
10 different memories.
unprompted.
milkvan is BONES.
