Softly Midnight
Yet another @black-emporium-exchange! This one features Max Amell x Morrigan having a sweet family moment. I adore this ship to the ends of the earth and back. They make a sweet family.
Content Warning: wholesome
Length: 1.7k
Morrigan’s eyes snapped open at the quiet in the house. She sat up and looked over to the other side of the bed where Max would normally be sound asleep, snoring softly, but his side was empty. Anxiety squeezed her heart and she threw back the covers to go in search of her errant husband. She remembered restless nights after Max had first joined her with Kieran where he’d be sleepwalking and having nightmares, remnants of the Blight that had latched onto his soul and subconscious. They had lessened over the years and he could go an entire night without having the urge to crawl out of his skin. She’d been happy to have him at her side, parting hadn’t sat right with her. She had underestimated his determination to find her, but she wasn’t quite used to the depth of feelings that Max had for her.
She quietly padded down the hallway as she listened for anything in the house that could let her know where he was. If he was having another episode then she wanted to help ease that pain from his mind. Morrigan found it hard to believe some days when she thought back to her journey with Max and the others. A Circle mage, of all people, had wormed his way into her heart and absolutely refused to leave. He’d been as tenacious as that mongrel of his.

for dadwc: Max Amell x Morrigan + "I hate the Deep Roads." "You're the one who dragged us here." "Doesn't make what I said any less true."
-inquisimer
I love these two so much. For @dadrunkwriting Max and Morrigan are my OTP from Origins. Serena Tabris was my second and Elaina was my third. I'm weak for the sassy goth girls. And apparently so is Max.
Content Warning: some sad mentions of Circle life but otherwise just some flirting going on. Awkward flirting.
“We’re lost… Again.” Zevran informed the group after they passed the same stalagmite for the fifth time. Max wanted to groan in frustration. Alistair, Zevran, and Morrigan were the ones who accompanied him into the Deep Roads, they’d left Oghren behind at their camp for this portion of the Deep Roads. Max honestly couldn’t stomach hearing him bitching about Branka again.
“Are we sure these maps are accurate?” Alistair asked as he looked over Zevran’s shoulder at them. Max held the light at the end of his staff for them to study the damned paper. He hated the Deep Roads, but not because of the cramped quarters or the darkspawn. Max hated the Deep Roads because he had a deplorable sense of direction. He would get lost in the Circle, why did he think he stood a chance against the spans of underground highway the dwarves built?
“I hate the Deep Roads,” Max groaned as Zevran and Alistair told them to stay put while they went to see if a tunnel would pan out to be an exit for them. Morrigan stood next to him as he complained.
“Are you not the one who dragged us down here?” He turned to look at her and huffed in annoyance. She merely watched him with that steady glare that never failed to make his blood run hot. She did it on purpose too, he just knew it. He glared before turning back towards the tunnel Zevran and Alistair disappeared down.
“Doesn’t make what I said any less true. If we didn’t need to find Branka and this stupid Anvil, we wouldn’t be down here.” Max crossed his arms and leaned his head to the side.
“Poor thing. Scared of the dark, are you?” Morrigan teased as he sent her an exasperated look.
“I can handle the dark. I practically grew up in the Circle after all, the children’s wing wasn’t the most well supplied area of the damned place.” Morrigan looked surprised at his admittance. Granted, he didn’t share much of his life at the Circle with any of them, only Alistair would have some inkling about what Circle life was like. “It’s the going in bleeding circles I can’t stand.”
“Well, perhaps one with more directional sense should lead.” Max waved his hand as if to say go ahead. “I do not need to be sassed.”
“I don’t recall saying a word,” he retorted and she merely regarded him carefully.
“You did not need to. You are quite easy to read, did you know that? You wear your thoughts on your face. Tis why you always lose when Zevran or Leliana ask you to place that card game they love.” Max grabbed his cheeks in stunned silence. “Has no one told you? Of course not, how else would they win those sovereigns off of you. I told you because I know what you’re thinking when I’m looking at you.” Max felt the flush rising up in his cheeks and turned his head before she could see. “You do have an adorable blush.” With that she heard the other two approaching, leaving Max standing there his mouth agape at her words.

“Yeah, I have a plan.” “Is it a good one?” “I have a plan.” for the pairing of your choice!
Happy Friday! I chose Max Amell and Morrigan for this one. I've had the inspiration for them today.
Content Warning: wholesome Length: ~500 words
Honestly Morrigan enjoyed the quiet, but there were times when it was unsettling. Her eyes looked up from the correspondence on the table and noticed the home she shared with her husband was quiet. Too quiet. Her eyes narrowed as she strained to listen for any sound coming from her son’s room, but only silence met her. “What are they up to now?” Morrigan sighed and pushed back from the desk to go investigate why it was so quiet.
She heard quiet giggling and hushed whispers as she approached the door. Luxe stuck his head out the door as he heard her approach and barked happily, his tongue lolling out as his entire body wiggled from excitement at seeing her. “No.” Morrigan held out her finger to the Mabari. “Sit.” She pointed down and Luxe plopped his bottom down and gazed up at her with yearning. “You know that doesn’t work with me, nor does using you as a distraction work either.” Morrigan skirted around the dog who gave out a warning bark and trotted along beside her.
Morrigan paused in the doorway and just absorbed the sight in front of her. Her son, barely five years old, grinning up at his father who hung loosely from the ceiling. She saw the magical threads holding him in place and she shook her head. “This is not what it appears to be.” She leaned against the doorway, crossing her arms as she regarded her helpless husband.
“Pray tell, what it is then?”
“I was helping Kieran learn a new spell, but I did it the way I learned it…” Max trailed off as her lips turned up into a lopsided smirk. “I know, I know. That’s not how he learns but I didn’t know how else to teach him.” He sounded so dejected that Morrigan chuckled. It had taken years of being free of the Circle to shake free of the teachings. He’d come a long way since then but there were certain things that would always remain.
“I assume you had a plan for getting down without help?”
“I did actually.”
“Was it a good one dear husband?” Max heard the tone in her voice and urged his brain to use caution. Proceed with caution damn it! But when did his brain ever listen to him?
“I had a plan, but since you are here…” He grinned at her and she tilted her head as she studied his face. “Morrigan, you wouldn’t!”
“Come along Kieran, it’s time to have lunch.” Morrigan straightened and held out her hand for her child. Kieran cheered and immediately grasped her hand in his.
“Don’t just leave me!” Max pleaded as she paused just past the doorway. She looked over her shoulder and the wicked gleam in her eyes had him sweating. He loved it when she looked at him like that, but before he could process what it meant, she snapped her fingers and the threads disappeared. Max groaned as he hit the floor and mumbled something about vindictive wives.
“As you have said before. Your life would be boring without this vindictive wife in it.” Morrigan smiled down as Kieran tugged her towards the kitchen.

Hello, happy DADWC! For a prompt, for any character or pairing that comes to mind for you, may I submit: "Why do you insist on taking care of everyone but yourself?"
Happy DADWC! @dadrunkwriting I'm back this week! Last week was Dragon*con and we had an absolute blast! But back to work! Here is my Warden x Morrigan ship. That I still adore to this day.
Content Warning: mentions of chronic headaches, otherwise wholesome Length: ~600 words
A flash of white followed by a dull throbbing was an all too familiar companion. Max took a breath leaning his head back as he struggled to empty his mind. The only way to stave off the headache coming was to center himself and his thoughts. He’d taken on too much once again. Vigil’s Keep required his supervision to run and the Warden Commander of Ferelden wasn’t allowed a break to rest. Once he’d have given anything to break free of the confinement of the Circle. Now with everything laid at his feet he found he missed the familiarity of it all. For a majority of the time his existence was decided by others.
Max opened his eyes when he felt a tug at his sleeve. He opened his eyes and stared into the ones of his son, the same shade as his own. Max always teased Morrigan that Kieran looked more like her than him to which she always replied he got the best part of you. The chair groaned as he turned and scooped up the toddler. “Will your mother be looking for you Kieran?” Max asked carefully as he struggled to keep the pain from showing on his face.
“Mama says dinnertime,” Kieran told his father as he stared up at him with that clear stare. The one that almost unnerved Max, if he didn’t know the circumstances of Kieran’s birth it would make him uneasy.
“Alright. Tell your Mama I’ll be right along.” Max kissed Kieran’s temple, just breathing in the tranquility of the moment before the toddler squirmed out of his arms. He chuckled and set Kieran on the floor who promptly took off in the direction of the dining room. Max turned back to the reports and felt the dull ache begin anew at the base of his skull. He never got these headaches before joining the Wardens and he often wondered if it was part of the Calling. It was no song he heard like the older Wardens warned him, and so he wondered what it could be. Max shook his head and stood to join his family for dinner. He was surprised to see Morrigan in the doorway. “Did Kieran find you?”
“Yes. He told me you were on your way. He also told me you were in pain again.” Max heaved a sigh, shoulders drooping, at his too perceptive son. He blamed that on the old soul that was nestled within his son. Morrigan stepped over to him and looked down at all the reports with a worried eye. “You are selfless.”
“What are you on about Morrigan? Selfless? I doubt that.” Max rubbed the back of his neck as the truth of her words settled deep in his chest. He smiled when her hand slid against his cheek, his fingers reached in up to wrap around her wrist. Her eyes narrowed as he grinned at her before turning and placing a kiss on the palm of her hand.
“You worry too much about others and often forget yourself in the process. Leaving me to ensure you eat and get proper rest.” Max grinned against her hand at the exasperation in her voice. He leaned his face away from her hand before tugging to her surprise. He caught her as she tripped, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close. The muttered curses about his dignity only made him chuckle as he pressed his face against the top of her head.
“I promise to take better care of myself in the future. I plan to be around as long as I can for you and Kieran. I told you that when I first found you remember?” Max grinned at her as Morrigan leaned back to look up into his face. She reached up and cupped his cheeks in her hands.
“You’d best keep that promise,” she murmured as she brought him down for a kiss.

Hey there! For DADWC, how about "“Admit it- your life would be boring without me.” for M!Warden x Morrigan? Happy writing!
Happy Friday! I love this prompt. Max and Morrigan are absolutely an adorable couple. Max is so sweet and is a great partner to Morrigan (he tries his best). I took some liberties with canon here as we don't know how Kieran grew up with Morrigan and the Warden. But I know Max would be an amazing father and partner. XD
Content Warning: cuteness overload Length: ~800 words
Morrigan flinched as she heard the loud crash coming from the other room. Followed swiftly by Max’s voice assuring her everything was fine and Kieran’s laughter. If she had to pin it on something she’d likely pin it on Max’s hound. “Why did I ever agree to that flea bitten mongrel to live with us?” Morrigan pinched the bridge of her nose but she knew why. The blasted dog had wormed his way into her heart and Kieran simply adored the beast. She knew that if she or Max wasn’t around, that Luxe would protect Kieran with his life.
“Mama.” Kieran held up the parchment for her inspection. “I drawed it!” His cheerful, chubby face looked so proud of the artwork. Morrigan smiled and accepted it from him.
“It’s, I drew it.” Kieran nodded and smiled at her. “It’s lovely Kieran. Thank you.” She ruffled his dark hair, so much like her own, but those eyes. Kieran’s eyes were all his father. That dark green, as dark as the Brecilian forest. Morrigan smiled as Kieran babbled about what he did with his father. Max must have still been cleaning up whatever mess they’d made in the other room.
“I love you Mama!” Morrigan paused at her son’s words. She wasn’t the best at affection, certainly not motherly. She never had the greatest example of it, but something had melted the moment she’d held Kieran in her arms. Her lips turned up in a warm smile as Kieran grasped at her skirt.
“I love you too.” Morrigan didn’t think she’d ever get tired of seeing how his face lit up at hearing the words. A pair of hands settled on her shoulders before Max swooped down to kiss her cheek.
“Papa!” Kieran fairly shrieked as he spotted Max behind Morrigan.
“My troublemaker!” Max announced before he scooped Kieran up in his arms. “Did you tell Mama what happened?” Kieran stuck a finger in his mouth and leaned his head against Max’s shoulder. “Haha, I don’t blame you.” He leaned down and spoke in a comically loud whisper. “We don’t want Mama to be mad. She might not let us have dessert.” Kieran straightened in alarm and Max grinned at him. “But, if you don’t tell the truth you can get in worse trouble.”
Morrigan crossed her arms over her stomach as she regarded the two men in her life. Kieran grinned at Max who had such a soft look on his face it made Morrigan ache. From what he shared with her, Max hadn’t had the best childhood growing up. His mother had practically thrown him into the Circle the moment his magic manifested. His father had been an apostate, but his mother hadn’t known. She’d been resentful of a young Max until the day his power showed itself, and that was all the sign she needed to throw away the child. She saw how Max was doing his best to not let Kieran grow up without the love of his parents.
“What did happen precisely?” Morrigan asked drawing the attention of the two. Kieran laid his cheek against Max’s shoulder and gave her those pleading eyes. She found it hard to resist but she knew that giving in would reinforce bad habits. “Kieran, please tell me the truth.”
“Papa?” Kieran looked up at Max who simply grinned at Morrigan over his shoulder.
“We got a little too enthusiastic about showing Kieran magic tricks.” Morrigan simply raised one eyebrow. “You know I’ve never been that talented with frost magic.”
“No. Lightning and fire are what calls to you,” she murmured and looked at Max. “What did you break?” Max laughed nervously. “Was it expensive?” He flinched and she blew out a breath.
“We can fix it. Probably.” Kieran threw his hands into the air with a cheerful squeal.
“I certainly hope so for your sake Maximillian.”
“Oh no Kieran, she used my full name.” Kieran gasped at Max’s over exaggerated tone. Morrigan simply scoffed as Max set Kieran down and he went running off as he heard Luxe bark.
“You two will give me gray hairs.” Morrigan huffed at Max as he wrapped an arm around her waist. He leaned down and pressed a kiss against her temple earning a small smile from her.
“Admit Morrigan. Your life would be absolutely boring without me causing chaos in it.” Morrigan simply shifted until she could give him a deadpan glance. Max simply laughed as she huffed at him.
“It certainly wouldn’t be as full of laughter as it is now.” They both paused as another crash sounded in the other room, followed by Kieran’s squeal of laughter and Luxe’s barking.
“I’ll go fix it. I promise.” Max hurried into the other room as Morrigan shook her head as she watched him go. He was right. Her life would be boring without him. She wouldn’t have the warmth of his smile, of his steadfast love, or his awkward flirting. They’d been together for so many years and he still got flustered when she flirted with him. She smiled as she heard Max chasing Luxe and Kieran around in the other room. No, she wouldn’t trade this life for anything else.

Happy DADWC day! How does a bit of “I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain this to you.” “What are those?” “Crayons.” sound for M!Warden x Morrigan?
Happy DADWC! For @dadrunkwriting Here is my Maximillian Amell and Morrigan for this lovely prompt. Poor lovely Max. He just doesn't have much experience in these kinds of things and takes them quite literally. XD
Ship: Maximillian Amell x Morrigan Content Warning: Awkwardness and a sudden smoothness that shocks everyone Length: ~900 words
Max was bound and determined to get Morrigan to speak more with him. He understood she was wary of Circle mages, and he couldn’t blame her. The hatred and distrust apostate mages received was enough to make anyone wary. He just wished she’d talk to him even a little. Each and every time he tried to get closer to her and speak about a magical theory, he’d get brushed away. Her favorite was always: I have neither the patience nor crayons to explain this topic to you.
Maximillian Amell was nothing if not clever. He had popped over to the merchant in Denerim who had been quite bewildered over his request but thankfully had what he was looking for. Max knew that he just had to get close to Morrigan again. She was warming up to him in other areas, but clammed up whenever he wanted to talk magical theory. So frustrating.
“You look quite pleased with yourself tonight young Maximillian.” Wynne broke him from his thoughts as she joined him by the fireside. “Is it a pair of pretty painted lips that tickles your fancy today?” Max fought the flush. Wynne was as close to a mother as he was likely to ever get after his thrust him into the circle at a young age. Instead of the usual teasing, Wynne merely smiled at him.
“She is good for you.” Max was surprised. Wynne was accepting of an apostate? She must have read the question on his face. “Apostates or Circle mages, we both draw from the same source do we not? The only difference is one has a set of iron bars as their prison and the other the constant state of unease from being hunted. Same prison different jailers.” Wynne explained as she held out her hand for Max’s hound to sniff as he came over for treats. “You could learn from one another. It is cute to see you showing affection for someone.”
Max rubbed the back of his auburn hair as he remembered how awkward he was in the Circle. He was so studious that he hadn’t even realized his good friend had a love affair going on with a Chantry sister. The entire incident regarding the First Enchanter and Jowan made Max realize he lived in a bubble of his own making. A bubble he had to break if he expected to survive out here in the real world. “I.”
“She is looking your way my dear.” Max’s head snapped up at Wynne’s words and she chuckled as she saw Morrigan’s turn just as quickly. “Such stubborn people. Well, I have faith that you’ll break her resolve.” Wynne gave Max a reassuring pat on his shoulder before she turned to pester Alistair. Max took his chance and strolled over to Morrigan’s small tent.
“Are here to bother me with your apostate questions yet again?” Max narrowed his eyes as she didn’t even bother to look at him. She waved towards the small log near her fire and Max settled himself down on it.
“I have, in fact, come to pester you with more questions.” Max saw the hint of a smile on her lips and his heart kicked up a notch. She turned to face him and he fought the flush on his cheeks as he faced her. She made him nervous, but not in a fearful way. He enjoyed her company but the quiet looks she sent his way had his palms itching sometimes. Alistair told him it was because she put a spell on him, but Max knew that wasn’t true. Wynne had teased him that it wasn’t a magic spell Morrigan had cast on him but another one, more powerful than even the strongest mage in Thedas. That had him thinking for days about it.
“Wonderful. Just what I needed to ease the boredom in my otherwise dreary night.” Max arched an eyebrow as she turned to face him. He rested his hand on top of his pocket, relieved to still feel the weight of the box in there.
“You said you could teach me how to shapeshift? I want to learn.” Max knew this question always without fail resulted in her annoyance.
“Again? I’ve told you before, I do not possess the patience nor the crayons to explain this complicated.” Morrigan paused as he held the box in front of her face. “Pray tell what are these?”
“Crayons.” Morrigan’s lips parted in a perfect o shape as she realized what he had done. She pushed his hand away and stared at him.
“Are you that determined to learn shapeshifting?” Max felt his chest grow tight at the imminent dismissal on her lips. He didn’t want to be turned away again. He let the box drop to his feet and he grasped her hand in his.
“I just want to spend time with you.” Max saw his words stunned her. Her lips struggled to form words and he swore he saw the hint of a flush on her cheeks before she schooled her features. Morrigan turned her head and he saw the pursed lips and thought he had messed up.
“You could have just asked.” Now it was his turn to be stunned and they stared at each other for a quite moment before his grin broke the tension.
“Then can I?”
“Can you what?”
“Spend time with you? I really want to Morrigan.” He pulled her hand towards his face and pressed a kiss to the back of it and grinned at her reaction. Her cheeks did indeed turn a bit pink under the firelight. Max suddenly realized the bold move he’d pulled off and felt his own cheeks grow warm. Her fingers shifted until they were intertwined with his.
“I’d like that as well.”

Happy Friday! Maybe for your Warden X Morrigan: "A nightmare comes true."
Happy Friday!! Thank you for the angsty prompt! I've been dying to write some angst but I hate choosing my own prompts. Getting them helps give me the kick in the pants I need to just write. So thank you!! For Max Amell x Morrigan. But as this is me, I couldn't just let it end sad. Under a cut because I want to spare anyone that this might trigger.
Content Warning: spouse death, death mention, grief, loss, character death Length: ~500 words
He had failed. The letter fluttered to the floor of the grand suite in the Empress of Orlais’ palace. Morrigan sank to the chair by her desk as the world faded to a soft buzzing. She couldn’t believe it. The words were written by his hand but the words were wrong. That was not him. That was not her Max. She could picture his smiling face in her mind as he came back from where the Wardens had him going. Morrigan remembered the first time he’d seen her quarters in the palace and the nerves there. He’d thrown all of Thedas in disarray to find her when she’d disappeared with Kieran after the fight with the Archdemon, though Kieran had not been born yet.
I’d walk through the Fade itself if it meant finding you again.
The tears spilled down her cheeks as she stared down at the words written to her. I’m sorry Morrigan. The Calling has come for me. I was too late. I do not wish for you or Kieran to see me suffer from it so I will do as all Grey Wardens have done before me. Stay safe my heart and stay strong for Kieran. Know that I love the both of you with my whole heart and beyond.
She crumpled the paper and tossed it at the wall in a fit of fury. That damnable taint had taken her love. Her worst nightmare come to fruition and she was powerless to stop it. There was no saving a Warden once the Calling came for them, they’d slowly succumb to the taint until they became the very things they hunted. She covered her lips as the sobs trembled on them and she silently prayed to gods that no longer listened for some divine intervention.
“Morrigan?” Morrigan’s eyes shot open and she sat up in bed breathing rapidly as she struggled to orient herself. Warm and familiar hands clasped her shoulders bringing her against his broad chest. “A nightmare?”
Her fingers grasped at his arms, desperate for that connection that told her he was real. The vestiges of her nightmare lingering in her mind. “I dreamed you left us.” He went still beside her before he leaned back. Morrigan was surprised to find him holding her on his chest as he laid on his back grinning at her. The same grin she’d feared she’d never see again. She told him of her nightmare as she laid her cheek against his chest.
“I’ll never leave you and Kieran like that. Not with a letter.” In her mind, Morrigan knew that. It was her heart that refused to listen. She still found it hard to sleep, even with the reassuring beat of his heart beneath her.
