part 2 of the NPMD Monster High AU! seriously thank you guys for all the love on part 1, it means a lot that you like my silly hyperfixation crossover :]

a little lore note: in this AU, monsters can use magic to blend in with humans during the day, sort of like in the g3 cartoon. Hatchetfield is kind of split into the normie side and smaller monster side. the monster part of town is magically warded to make humans want to leave quickly, and monsters don’t tend to cross over into the human areas (with the exception of adults with normie jobs, like Mayor Lauter and most of the adult HF cast). Hatchetfield High is a “exclusive private school” in the monster part of town, and the normie teens, like Grace and Max, go to Sycamore.

why are Grace and Max humans if this is a monster AU, you ask? don’t worry, i have plans for them :)

Steph:

she’s a vampire because… well because she’s rich. you’ve heard of old money? these Lauters are ancient money

i had a hard time with her outfit because my main references were Draculaura and Elissabat, who are both very dressy, but i wanted to stay true to Steph’s casual grungy style… and then i remembered The Lost Boys were THEE original grunge vampires, so i mashed David and Paul’s jackets together and gave her a Santa Carla tee as a shout-out

the chains and plaid pattern tie back to Pete’s design, like the plaid of her flannel and his bow tie in the show <3

her father isn’t technically actually a king, but runs Hatchetfield’s monster community like he is one. a close encounter with a band of monster hunters the better part of a century ago forced the monsters into hiding under his command, and Steph’s mother ended up staked. Solomon hasn’t been the same since…

Max:

his design is simpler than the others, but that’s for a reason :) the mansters usually have more boring outfits than the ghouls, so it’s not that out of place for Monster High, right? i plan to make a few more ‘doll lines’ for this au- i’m thinking Dawn of the Dance next ;)

his jacket is based on the G1 varsity jackets that Heath Burns and Slo Mo had in their first waves, but with Max’s iconic blue. i got rid of the Hatchetfield ‘H’ since he goes to Sycamore with the other normies in this AU. go Timberwolves, i guess?

his striped shirt is based on Freddy Krueger’s iconic sweater, because Max in the musical seems to take a lot of cues from Freddy; coming back from the dead to get revenge on his killers, vulgar one-liners, gruesome kills, and even a parody of the Freddy rhyme painted on the set background. one, two, Jäger’s coming for you…

side note but i had a really hard time getting Will’s likeness in this pseudo-MH style. i think he ended up a bit too Bruce Campbell-y. maybe it’s the chin.

Grace:

sorry, Grace, i’m changing your name a bit. if you need a refresher on the G1 MH lore; Van Hellscream is the Monster High expy of Van Helsing. his niece Lilith appears in the Ghouls Rule movie, but i’m stretching out the timeline a bit so let’s say Lilith is Grace’s aunt or something. Chasity is her maiden name, which the family goes by because “Hellscream doesn’t sound very Christian”

these days, the Van Hellscream’s monster-hunting legacy is more of a family legend than history, and her parents don’t even believe that monsters exist… but Grace knows that something unholy is going on at that “private school”. she may not have Great-Uncle Abraham’s arsenal, but she has the power of God and years of repressed rage on her side

design wise she changed the least from her canon outfit. she’s covered in monster-killing weapons- crosses, stakes, silver bullets, and the flowers on her blouse and jeans are alliums, aka garlic flowers- which, fun fact, were originally thought to be what repelled vampires, rather than garlic bulbs!

her blouse is based on Nancy’s nightdress in Nightmare on Elm Street to match with Max’s Freddy stripes

significantly bumped up the mint in my 10min minty pea soup and by god i'm a fucking genius

i'd give a recipe but it's like uhhhh med-large onion diced and sweated to the edge of caramelization, two cloves of garlic in there about 3 min before the onions are done just to get the raw off of them, idk like 500g frozen peas? bit more? idk! enough water to cover them and then a bit more? black pepper quanto basta, a good bouillon cube, a generous handful of mint like idk this is a 25g bag so prob about 20g tbh (put the rest in a bottle of cold brewed tea), a small handful of basil (like again out of a 25g bag maybe 10g max). fuck that shit in a blender baby let's goooooooooo

even tho i don't use it as much in the winter, the nutribullet rx with the soup setting is genuinely one of the best things i've ever bought. like all the above in a blender cold (except for the sweated allium) and it's silky smooth and steaming hot after the soup cycle.

but yeah idk it's so good - fresh and green and herby wow yes 🫛

Harringrove April Day 5- Butterflies

Just past the Hargrove’s property line, in the empty lot owned by the city, there’s a butterfly garden.

Zinnias and alliums, marigolds and black-eyed Susans (ouch), all planted in lovely rows to attract the butterflies as the season rolls in. A nice little thing for a nice little neighborhood.

It’s not until Neil’s gone that Billy ever goes to see it. Max used to go sometimes with her little plastic watering can and sit there for hours, when things got to be too much at home.

Now things were different, and it was Billy’s turn, when he was feeling overwhelmed by having a sister who genuinely gave two shits and a stepmom who didn’t send him packing after his dad skipped town, to go sit by the flowers and just watch.

It’s fitting, that it would be butterflies, a symbol of change, that he sought out that comfort in. How much had he changed since Starcourt? How much had their little white house on Cherry changed without the overbearing presence of Neil Hargrove?

Max didn’t usually come with him, and he was alright with that, he didn’t really want his little sister seeing him cry about butterflies anyways.

Other than the occasional elderly woman in gardening gloves or an unattended kid wanting to visit the pretty flowers, the only person he ever met out there was Steve Harrington.

His mother had apparently been part of the committee that had arranged for the garden to be planted in the first place, so every Sunday at three o’clock he came out to help take care of it. Not that Billy was keeping track, of course.

He wore the same overalls each time, the same farmer's hat and yellow tinted sunglasses too. He told the same jokes, and brought the same blue tin watering can with the flowers on the side, but it was somehow incredibly charming.

And really, how was Billy supposed to not fall in love with him, the way he hummed as he watered the flowers, taking so much care to make them flourish?

The spring of ‘87 is a good year for the butterflies. Monarchs, Spicebush Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, they come in swarms to the little garden and it’s really a sight.

By then, Billy doesn’t go down there as much anymore, he’s been out of the hospital a year now, and his trust in Susan and Max is strong enough that he doesn’t have to take his problems to the pollinators these days.

But every Sunday except Easter he was still out there, and at three on the dot, Steve would make his appearance.

Today in a light yellow button up with embroidered bees under light blue bibs, covered in dirt and paint stains, the perfect image of spring.

He smiles and waves at Billy, holding his other hand up against the sunlight in his eyes as he makes his approach.

“Guess what,” Steve turns around to show him there’s a gardening glove and a fake flower sewn to the back of his overalls, as if that’s supposed to mean anything to him. “It’s the symbol of the garden club, all the ladies used to wear these on their jackets! That means I’m an official member now!”

It makes Billy laugh, his enthusiasm contagious, and he teases, “So that’s what King Steve is into these days.”

“Oh shut up, you’re the one with the keg record and you’re still sitting in a flower field watching bugs in your free time.”

“Touché.” He watches Steve watering the flowers, using the peaceful moment to build up his courage to ask, “So I’ve been hearing about this place from Max, it’s a big botanical garden up in Indie. What do you say we go?”

Steve looks up, but his gaze is just past Billy, and his eyebrows are furrowed. “Just us two?”

“Well you don’t usually bring the kids you babysit on dates with you, do you?”

“A-A date?” Steve stutters, the slightest strain of tension in his voice that makes Billy’s already sutured back together heart break into a hundred pieces.

“Look, Steve, if you’re not interested, just say it and get it over with.”

“Billy it’s not like that, I am interested.”

He scoffs, “You’re doing a great job at showing it.”

“No really, before you started coming out here, I paid a gardener to do this, but now I look forward to every Sunday more than anything just because I get to be around you. It’s just that I-“ He cuts himself off with a frustrated sound, and Billy, taking it to mean he’s having a hard time letting him down easy, tells him, “Just spit it out, Harrington.”

“I’m afraid of the butterflies, okay?” Steve blurts out, “There’s been a Cabbage White behind you this whole time and he’s freaking me out.”

“The butterflies? I just put my neck on the line to ask you for a date, and you were distracted by the butterflies .”

“They’re creepy!” Steve crosses his arms over his chest, his face burning red up to his ears with embarrassment. “Look, I’m sorry, I know it’s irrational or stupid or whatever.”

“I never said that.” Billy hooks his pinky finger with Steve’s, smiles when he looks up from the flowers to him with wide eyes. “Actually I think it’s pretty romantic, you facing your fears just to come see me.”

“Really?” Steve says breathless, then corrects himself with a bout of the old Steve’s confidence, “I mean, yeah, I’d do anything for you.”

As good as this year was for the Monarchs and the Painted Ladies, there was no shortage of butterflies in Billy’s heart either, that nervous flutter stronger than ever when he asks, “So? Does that mean we’re still on for that date then?”

Lacing the rest of their fingers together, the watering can swinging at his other side, Steve smiles wide, “Definitely.”
