Heading to Kansas City

We are taking a leisurely drive to Kansas City for the McCarthy family reunion. Have not had a road trip in a while. It’s always fun to get on the road.

Thanks to Mavis tire in Johnstown, NY, we were back on the road, only 2 hours behind our no-schedule route.

Mumford & Sons Make Surprise Newport Folk Festival Debut

Everyone was curious on Friday, but once I got to the Fort on Saturday, it was clear the rumor mill was running in high gear. Bruce Springsteen was flying around like crazy, as was Neil Young and Joan Baez; then sometime later in the day I heard people – seriously, mind you – drop names like Elton John and Taylor Swift. I’d personally be excited for any of those, but after Mumford & Sons dropped in for some songs at one of Friday night’s after-shows, it was basically set in stone… Mumford & Sons were indeed our ‘Unannounced’ headliner. But, the Newport Folk Festival has never been reliant solely on their headliners, so we’ll get to them when we get to them. Here’s what else Saturday had to offer…

Harbor Stage

After a disappointing first half of the day, what with missing Caamp (not pictured) completely and being unimpressed or downright bored with both Bedouine and Daniel Norgren, it was time for my most anticipated Harbor set of the weekend, Phoebe Bridgers. She quickly won over anyone in the audience who didn’t already know her with a mesmerizing set showcasing her ethereal voice and beautifully devastating songwriting. Following her set it was time for Canadian country singer/songwriter, Colter Wall, whose voice and musical style harkened back to the titans of the genre without ever feeling like an imitation. Closing out the Harbor was Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam, who surprised the hell out of me (and likely only me, as the crowd and festival seemed to know full-well what they were capable of).

Quad Stage

Unfortunately, I missed most of Low Cut Connie’s (not pictured) set, which is a shame, since he apparently tore the roof (tent) off the joint. They delivered such a forceful performance that the lead singer accidentally ran into the media tent straight from stage, thinking it would lead him backstage. After a moment of darting around like a lost puppy, he managed to find his way home. Then, sandwiched between two solid – if not entirely stand-out – performances from Hiss Golden Messenger and Beneath the Sacred Mountain, was the incredibly fun Tank & The Bangas, who had the crowd dancing almost as hard as they were. Jenny Lewis was next, and she did was she does best; she effortlessly made the entire quad fall in love with her, whether for the first time or the hundredth. Headlining the Quad Stage was the legendary Cheech & Chong, who, leading into the weekend, were one of my most anticipated acts of the festival. Quickly, however, it became very clear that their set simply just didn’t belong here. There was a ton of awkward silences where laughs were supposed to be, and only the laziest or most dedicated fans could handle more than a few minutes before heading out to see what rumors would soon become fact.

Fort Stage

It was probably the overall weakest of the three days at the Fort Stage, starting off with a forgettable set from Curtis Harding. Next up, however, was the force that is Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. Pairing some beautiful songs with plenty of explosive energy, Nelson ruled over the Fort with an assured calmness that only made him all the more badass. Valerie June followed with an uncharacteristically bad set. Shakey Graves then brought it back to life a little, but never managed to live up to his full promise in the chunk of his set I managed to catch. Courtney Barnett quickly revived the shit out of the fort, though, when she took the stage by storm with her rockin’ guitar-work and clever-as-hell songwriting. Finally, it was the moment everyone was waiting for. The surprise was somewhat muted for anyone close to the stage, as the crew could be seen wearing Mumford & Sons ‘working’ passes and putting into place a banjo with the British flag painted on back. However, once Jay Sweet came out and introduced the band, who had somehow never played the festival before, the crowd went nuts. And rightfully so, Mumford & Sons are giants in the folk-rock world, and put on one hell of a performance. Here, they played the Newport Folk game brilliantly by inviting out plenty of special guests; Brandi Carlile and Maggie Rogers joined them for the opening song, ‘Awaken My Soul’, Phoebe Bridgers came out for a fantastic cover of Radiohead’s ‘All I Need’, then Brandi Carlile came back for a gorgeous cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ and ‘Kansas City��� off The New Basement Tapes, and Maggie Rogers returned for a cover of her own ‘Alaska’. Then, after blowing their fans away with their mega-hit ‘I Will Wait’, Mumford & Sons invited all the ladies back out, along with the incomparable national treasure that is Mavis Staples, for a show-closing rendition of The Band’s ‘The Weight’.

Whether you’re a fan or not – and I heard plenty of people throughout the day who were clearly not – this set was a Newport Folk moment for the history books, and a damn fine way to close out an otherwise mixed day.

6/8: Bill Frisell Trio, Old Town School of Folk Music

Bill Frisell has long been one of the most innovative jazz guitarists, injecting influences from Americana/country (see Blues Dream), Malian guitar music (see his excellent The Intercontinentals), and even ambient/experimental music. To see him play in any capacity is a treat. This trio performances features bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston.

6/8: The Black Dahlia Murder, House of Blues

Tonight, Michigan death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder plays last year’s Nightbringers in its entirety, their best album since Ritual and certainly one of their best records yet. We previously covered a show of theirs in Joliet to support 2015′s Abysmal, and if that was anything to go by, they’re experts at combining melody and power on stage as well as in the studio.

Knoxville deathcore band Whitechapel (playing This Is Exile in its entirety) co-headlines. Italian death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse and blackened death metal bands Aversions Crown and Shadow of Intent open.

6/8: Young Widows, Subterranean

Tonight, Young Widows celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their album Old Wounds by playing it in its entirety as well as playing some never-before-played tracks from their just-released compilation DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain. Earlier this week, we spoke with front-man Evan Patterson about the new album and the upcoming show.

6/8: The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Lincoln Hall

There’s a reason that this band has made it to our top albums of both 2015 and 2017 and that their show three years ago at Subterranean was one of the best we’ve reviewed. The band’s trademark mix of post-rock, post-hardcore, and truly tender emo makes their sound unmistakable. Their stories, filled with tales of sexual violence, feminist revenge, and experiences with xenophobia have hit hard for many. Yet, their most successful songs remain as vaguely relatable as their music is expansive. Their live show is becoming increasingly ambient, as well, a refreshing shift for a band not content to stay within any one scene.

Baltimore Indie post-hardcore band Pianos Become The Teeth co-headline. LA garage rock trio Teenage Wrist opens.

6/8-6/10: Chicago Blues Festival, Millennium Park

Headlining performances take place in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and include tributes to founder and owner of Delmark Records Bob Koester and legendary blues musician Little Walter, as well as a performance by a living legend, Mavis Staples.

We previewed Mavis Staples’ headlining show at the Vic Theatre back in February:

“Since 2010′s stunning You Are Not Alone, Chicago legend Mavis Staples has fostered a fruitful musical relationship with another beloved Chicagoan: Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. Three out of the past four albums feature production and/or songwriting from Tweedy, and his minimalism is the perfect complement to Staples’ deep soul. Her most recent offering is If All I Was Was Black, an outward and explicit political statement. Vieux Farka Toure plays the Budweiser Crossroads Stage (at South Chase Promenade) on Saturday at 2:45 P.M. The Malian singer and guitarist is more than just the son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure; he’s put out some great albums in his own right, namely his self-titled debut and 2011′s wide-ranging The Secret (I see you, Dave Matthews feature). His most recent album is last year’s Samba, which features the limber and joyous “Bonheur”.

Fantastic Negrito opens for Mavis Staples on Sunday at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. His subversive, hilarious blues punk broke out in 2016 with The Last Days of Oakland, and he’s got a new album out next Friday with Please Don’t Be Dead. So far, he’s released two songs from it: the blistering “Plastic Hamburgers” and funky “The Duffler”.

6/8-6/10: Ribfest Chcago, Lincoln Avenue from Irving Park to Berteau

You can even be a vegetarian and enjoy Ribfest because it usually books pretty good bands. This year, headliners include Southern rockers The Weeks and country punks The Waco Brothers tonight, SILY favorite Algiers and indie folk act Yoke Lore tomorrow night, and 2000′s hype kings Ra Ra Riot and Americana duo Striking Matches on Sunday.

Algiers’ The Underside of Power was one of our top albums of last year. They’re a stellar live band, lead singer Franklin James Fisher equal parts soulful and angry, the band behind him delving into everything from ramshackle post-punk to ragtime and blues.

6/9: Tech N9ne: House of Blues

Divisive and lyrically dexterous Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne comes around pretty often, but like Los Lobos, that’s reason for me to always say “I’ll catch them next time.” Eventually, you just need to bite the bullet. Albums like All 6′s and 7′s and Something Else cemented him as an ambitious rapper who can succeed when working with big concepts and other mega rappers, while recent albums like Planet and Special Effects have showed he can be a hit-maker. He’s got 20 albums to his name and a ton of other EPs. Not everything he produces is quality, but he’s pretty prolific.

Hip hop artists Krizz Kaliko, Just Juice, Joey Cool, King ISO, and Mackenzie Nicole open.

6/9: Clams Casino, East Room

We covered influential beat-maker Clams Casino’s set at Day For Night 2016, where we noted that both he and the audience seemed a bit bored. Something tells me, however, that catching him in a crowded club at night is better than catching him in a half-empty post office in the middle of the day. (I listened to Instrumentals a couple days ago, and it still bangs.)

6/9: Liz Phair, Empty Bottle

She’s got a sold out show at Empty Bottle and a major slot at this year’s Riot Fest. That’s because Matador records just released Girly-Sound to Guyville, a 25th anniversary retrospective of Liz Phair’s debut Exile in Guyville that even more notably includes remasters of her Girly Sound demo tapes. To celebrate the occasion, Phair’s set should be heavy on Guyville material, perhaps with a few highlights from Whip-Smart or Whitechocolatespaceegg.

6/9: The Mavericks, Thalia Hall

Tex-Mex band The Mavericks have been perhaps at their strongest since their 2010s reunion. 2013′s excellent In Time may be their best album as a whole, while 2015′s Mono (mixed in monophonic sound) appropriately emphasized production over hooks. Last year’s Brand New Day veered a bit towards Americana--just listen to those powered out fuzz riffs behind the Tex-Mex on “Damned (If You Do)”. Even if the new record wasn’t as good as the previous two, it was at least a symptom of a band unwilling to stay put.

6/9: Live from Here with Chris Thile, Ravinia

Chris Thile’s done it all: played with acclaimed bluegrass bands like Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, won a MacArthur Genius award, and covered Bach on a solo album. Now, he takes over for Garrison Keillor, who was accused of sexual harassment, on Live from Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion). Special guests tomorrow night include guitarist Parker Millsap (who we just previewed), acoustic instrumentalist band Hawktail, comedian Tom Papa, and duet partner Gaby Moreno.

6/10: Traschan Sinatras, SPACE

Scottish indie pop band Trashcan Sinatras embarked on an acoustic tour last year. Now, they’re on their “One Night, Two Albums” tour, in which they’ll play in full their 1990 debut Cake & 1993 follow-up I've Seen Everything as well as selections from their more recent discography. Their last album was 2016′s Wild Pendulum--but I’d hope for cuts from 2004′s Weightlifting. 

6/10: Simon Joyner, Empty Bottle

Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner is the type to have laid back and made himself a steady presence in the Americana world. Those he’s influenced and collaborated with, like Beck, Conor Oberst, and John Darnielle, have sold more records than he has, but his music remains just as present. Last year’s Step Into The Earthquake followed 2015′s excellent Grass, Branch, & Bone, which we spoke to him about at length in our feature Palpable Pain.

6/10: Hop Along, Metro Chicago

We caught Hop Along’s intimate, energetic set at House of Vans last year after they had multiple years to iron out the songs from their great Painted Shut album. This time around, they have another excellent album to their name: Bark Your Head Off, Dog, released a couple months ago. In recording the new album, the band spent extra time in the studio, resulting in songs filled with strings, Rhodes, and complex, layered harmonies. The extent to which they’re able to replicate the album live is a selling point for seeing them just as much as lead singer Frances Quinlan’s incredible voice.

6/10: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Riviera

They did it. It was an ambitious promise, but Australian psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released 5 albums last year (including Murder of the Universe, reviewed on SILY). They were all good, but none as good as 2016′s truly nonstop Nonagon Infinity. Expect them to play from their entire recent discography minus Sketches of Brunswick East, which was released in collaboration with Mild High Club.

Louisiana couple had no idea they were pregnant until labor hit

SHREVEPORT, La. – Bryson and Grace Mawn had just eaten dinner with friends when Grace started having stomach pains so bad, the Louisiana couple went to the emergency room.

Bryson assumed his wife had kidney stones, but what she actually had was a baby — a little girl born shortly after they arrived at the hospital.

The couple, both 20, had no idea Grace was pregnant.

“I never felt her move during the pregnancy. I never had cravings, I never had morning sickness,” Grace explains to KSLA, adding that she had not gained “noticeable” weight and was still getting what appeared to be her monthly menstrual cycle.

The baby born March 26, named Micaela Grace Mawn, was making progress in the NICU as of Tuesday.

Bryson is in the Air Force and Grace is a catering manager at Chick-fil-A, per People, and they only “had maybe a couple hundred dollars in our savings account” and, obviously, no baby gear. They’ve set up a GoFundMe that has so far raised more than $7,500, and friends, family, and community members have been bringing them baby necessities.

“Whenever I look at her I’m like, how the heck did that happen,” Grace says. “But I’m super grateful. And I love her to death, so I’m happy.” Grace says she plans to get her nursing degree and someday work in a NICU herself.

Mumford and Sons made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival on Saturday, marking their first full band performance of 2018. Over the course of their 15-song set, they performed a number of covers and were accompanied by several special guests.

The 2020 Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA. – More than 1,000 musicians from the world over converged on this city already renowned for music and did their best to convince promoters, festival organizers, music critics and disc jockeys that they are the next Big Thing.

Or at least good enough to book for a show.

The Folk Alliance International's annual five-day conference is a must for the new artist trying to make an impression. Of course, there are always "Big Names" at the event as well, though many slip in and out quietly. But for every Mavis Staples, Tom Rush, Ani DiFranco or Maria Muldaur, there were dozens of others looking for that big break, from Alisa Amador to Zapammat. 

Cleveland was well represented with musicians like Alex Bevan, Charlie Mosbrook and B. Ryan B. plying their craft and making connections. Others, like Clay Pasternack, of Rocky River, was there seeking artists needing his cd and vinyl manufacturing and distribution services.  

The conference, which ended Sunday, was a maelstrom of musical styles from Americana, to aboriginal Australian music, through folk, jazz, country and western, rock and musical amalgams that have no name.

The music reverberated through every corner of the French Quarter Sheraton Hotel, competing with the musicians on every street corner. Inside, musicians performed constantly in every corner of the building, in the lobby and even in the stairwells, carrying guitars and banjos and trying to squeeze stand-up basses into elevators. There were shows in concert halls of varying sizes day and night. 

When those "official" shows ended at 10:30, the music shifted upstairs into hundreds of simultaneous intimate shows in hotel rooms that went on almost to sunrise. Often the rooms filled quickly, with people sitting on the floor and beds, while unlucky fans craned to hear the music from the hallway. Sometimes, performers played for an audience of three, even one.

It was a bit overwhelming for Alex Bevan, who has been a musical fixture in Northeast Ohio since the early seventies.

"This is my first Folk Alliance conference," he said. "I'm blown away by all the talent here. It's giving me a new perspective of where I can go with my music and it is a great place to network."

For music lovers, the conference is an orgy of song and substance, a place to experience events that may never happen again. Spontaneous jams where musicians join others on stage and as if they had been together for years. These one-time collaborations become the stuff of legends and perhaps Youtube.

This year a show that will go down in Folk Alliance history found 30 people crammed into a room to hear a superstar round-robin concert with Tom Rush, Eric Schwartz, Seth Glier, Jenny Reynolds, Neale Eckstein and R.J. Cowdery in a once-in-a-lifetime gathering.

It was one of those shows where even the artists went slack-jawed listening to each other's intimate songs. Tom Rush was at his laid back best. Prolific songwriter Cowdery sang her folksy tunes but no one was prepared for Glier.

With a talent clearly suited for a big stage, Glier exploded with keyboards and shattering vocals. He was one of the break-out stars of the conference, with his music so inventive and appealing. His songs, like the lovers revenge "I Want You To Cry" with a violinist and a stand-up bass backing his keyboards, were immediate hits.

Tom Rush, whose career started in Boston and Greenwich Village in 1962, performed three new songs including a long-awaited sequel to his 1968 hit, "No Regrets." It was a sad song that seem to come from the heart, and the last he played for the conference.

The ever-outrageous Eric Schwartz, of Boston, sang his one and only anti-Trump song -- a conversation between Jesus Christ and Satan called "He Won?" about the 2016 election. Schwartz, known for his scandalous political songs, explained that was the only Trump song he wrote because, "I just can't bring myself to write anything funny about Trump."

In another room, guitarist Irakli Gabriel and his keyboardist wife Anana Kaye, from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, stood somberly during a concert time that was reserved for their mentor, David Olney, who died just a week before.

"This was to be his show," Gabriel said. "For the past two years we have been working with David writing and recording his new album, which he never got around to naming. We literally just finished it last Saturday night in the studio when we got a call saying that David died of a heart attack on stage while performing in Florida."

The couple performed some of the songs, Anana through tears, that Olney had planned to unveil at the conference. The album, still unnamed, will be released in the spring.

Another break-out performance came from a genre-defying eight-member horn band out of Chicago called the Low Down Brass Band. 

Words fail. Imagine Blood, Sweat and Tears as a hip-hop band at a Cuban wedding, with a Motown influences. The music was boisterous and infectious causing the normally laid back crowd to dance uncontrollably to "I Got That Feeling" https://youtu.be/uF_6LHdWsbY 

The Rainbow Girls, an attractive all-woman trio from Northern California, get the award for finest subversive harmony. It was easy to fall in love with their music and the playful stage style. The girls were the only performers who could get away with a song that could only be described as an "Anti-Love Song." 

The big attraction of the Folk Alliance conference is also its greatest weakness. With so many performance occurring at the same time it's easy to get overwhelmed knowing that for every show you watch means you are missing hundreds of others. Walking down a hallway you hear music from every door. That blues singer sounds incredible...wait a second, is that an Appalachian folk song coming from there? The Canadian room has three women singing in perfect harmony. It's too much!

The Folk Alliance conference in the past moved around from city to city, including Cleveland in 2000. The future of the moveable feast is in flux, but it is scheduled to be in Kansas City for at least 2021 and 2022.

The New Orleans Sheraton was a poor choice for the convention. The city is a blast, but the hotel was ill-equipped to handle the thousands of people the event attracted. The rooms and hallways seemed too small and narrow and the elevators were a disaster, often stranding people.

The conference is exhausting, exhilarating and entertaining, an adrenalin shot of new music.

In other news, Marcus Mumford is among the judges for the Mercury Prize 2018 – alongside Radio 1’s Clara Amfo, Mistajam, Lianne La Havas, Jamie Cullum and more. Mumford & Sons’ last studio album ‘Wilder Mind’ was released in 2015. Last year, the band opened up about the difficulties the electric guitar-driven record caused them. “A lot of people heard [lead single] ‘Believe’ and started giving the album one-star reviews on iTunes before it had even come out. Gorillaz Announce European Tour

Gorillaz have announced a European tour behind new album Humanz. Find the dates, which run through November and into early December, below. The news follows the group’s secret London show in March, where they debuted a host of material from the record, as well as the announcement of Demon Dayz, their own festival in Margate. As with the London show, special guests “from the stellar roll call of Gorillaz’ family of featured artists” are promised at the UK shows. (The album features Grace Jones, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, De La Soul, Pusha T, Kali Uchis, Kelela, Vince Staples, Jehnny Beth of Savages, D.R.A.M., Popcaan, and many more.)

Gorillaz Announce 'Humanz' Tour Dates, Join Life Is Beautiful Festival 2017 Lineup

Gorillaz are hitting the road after the release of their upcoming Humanz album, due on April 28. The duo fronted by Blur’s Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett announced a series of 17 tour dates Monday morning (Apr. 17), including a slot in this year’s Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas. 

For their first North American outing in seven years the animated band will kick things of fin Chicago on July 8 with a show at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, followed by stops in Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia and Quebec, with appearances at the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco, the Meadows Music & Arts Festival in New York and the winding down on Oct. 13-15 at the III Points Festival in Miami, Florida.

Life Is Beautiful is scheduled for Sept. 22-24; pre-sale and full lineup details have yet to be revealed. Tickets for the tour will be available starting Apr. 21 and those purchased online for selected dates will including a choice of either the standard physical or standard digital copy of Humanz.

The tour announcement follows a recent report about the group’s first North American show in seven years (the Quebec City Summer Festival on April 28), as well as news about their “Spirit House,” an immersive pop-up experience in collaboration with Sonos that features music, visuals, physical installations and projection mapping technology. The “Spirit House” lands in New York (April 21-23), Berlin (April 28-30) and Amsterdam (May 6).

Four new Gorillaz tracks — “Saturnz Barz,” “Andromeda,” “Ascension” and “We Got the Power” — recently debuted on the Hot Rock Songs chart. The band dropped a video for “Saturnz Barz” in March, setting a record for the most successful debut for a virtual reality music video in YouTube’s history.

The Humanz Tour outing will feature Albarn and Hewlett’s animated creations — Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D — joined by live musicians to perform their classic songs as well as new material. A release announcing the tour promises that they will be joined onstage by a group of the artists featured on the new album, including: Jehnny Beth (Savages), Danny Brown, Benjamin Clementine, De La Soul, D.R.A.M., Peven Everett, Anthony Hamilton, Grace Jones, Zebra Katz, Kelela, Mavis Staples, Vince Staples, Popcaan, Pusha T, Jamie Principle and Kali Uchis, among others.
