Matisyahu + G. Love and Special Sauce 2023 Summer Tour
When it comes to concert venues in the SWLF region, there’s no better place than The Ranch Concert Hall and Saloon. Although the setup is clearly meant for line dancing, The Ranch provides a huge pit/floor with tons of seating areas surrounding it to relax and enjoy the show. Giant projectors are placed throughout the venue to ensure everyone can see the show, no matter what vantage point you’re at. When I heard Matisyahu was playing here, I knew I was coming. Reggae music was always a love of mine. The lineup consisted of support from G. Love and Special Sauce and Cydeways.
Cydeways was the opening act and quickly filled the atmosphere with some positive vibes. Between slipping in and out between reggae, alternative rock, and a little bit of rap sprinkled throughout, Cydeways managed to fill the floor with dancing couples and high energy. Cydeways is an alternative band out of Santa Barbara, CA. Their frontman Dustin was an extremely nice guy and their music reminds me of early Sublime.
G. Love was born in Philly and eventually moved around until the band ended up out west. Blending everything from folk, blues, and rap, it’s not a surprise they broke out in 1994 with their self-titled debut. Continuing to spread the love and sauce for over twenty-five years, G. Love and the Special Sauce would release seven more albums and four on his own.
G. Love and Special Sauce took the stage next. Artist paintings were displayed in the background showcasing one of G. Love’s many talents. It was pretty clear that G. Love and Special Sauce had the special sauce. Their music was captivating!
Starting off in the blues chair, G. Love showcased his musical skills by playing the guitar, harmonica, and singing. With Jim Prescott on the stand-up bass and Chuck Treece on the drums, this trio showed why their music has been phenomenal for over 20 years. At one point during the set, G. Love helped create a memory for one of the fans that they would never forget. G. Love noticed a fan taking a video of the performance and grabbed the phone to sing into it while performing on the stage. G. Love and Special Sauce had the sauce that night!
With Cydeways coming back on stage to kick off the music, also supported by Ezra Miller from The Flash and Fantastic Beasts, the light dimmed, hands went up in the air, shouts and whoops drowned out the instruments as Matisyahu walked out. He kicked off the show with the song Jerusalem. Reggae vibes and music filled the air with electricity as he swayed and glided across the stage in an almost ethereal fashion. The most iconic part of the night was when nearly everyone from the tour, including G. Love and the merchandise guy, came on stage to play the drums and jam. At this point, Ezra used his cup as his preferred instrument.
Smiles were on everyone’s faces, both on stage and in the crowd, as they all jammed in unison. It was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. There was so much love, joy, and happiness in the air. It was truly special. When people say things are a whole vibe and you had to be there to see/feel it, it’s true. I was happy to be a part of that moment and I don’t think I’ll ever see a show that can replicate that. Matisyahu played both old and new songs, jamming and beatboxing until the lights came on and the show was over.
Matisyahu, which is Hebrew for “gift of god” is a storyteller, Grammy award/nominated singer, beat boxer, and rapper.  Known for blending reggae and beatboxing, Matisyahu saw early success with “King without a Crown.” Named Top Reggae Artist by Billboard, Matisyahu has continued to preach love and equality across the globe.
If you can catch one of his remaining shows, don’t hesitate! It was an unforgettable and amazing experience!

Bruno Mars comes home this week, but the pop music megastar’s welcome came five months ago, when his first two announced shows each sold out in a couple of hours. A third was added and sold out just as quickly, and now the moment his fans waited months for is finally here.
For the fourth time, the Roosevelt grad born here as Peter Hernandez is back, bringing his mega-successful 24K Magic World Tour to Honolulu for a little homestand.
This visit is his biggest yet, befitting of his ever-growing profile, as he revives Aloha Stadium as a viable concert facility with a venue-record three sold-out shows, capping a 213-concert tour that spanned six continents, 38 countries and nearly two years.
About 110,000 fans will attend the three shows, reinforcing the pop-music superstar’s description of his home state in a 2011 web documentary.
“They got love, man,” Mars said then. “Hawaii … this place is the best.”
Hawaii earns the nickname “The Aloha State” in many ways. From the lei we give out on special occasions to the way we always make sure our potlucks have too much food rather than too little. From the aloha shirts many businessmen favor over three-piece suits to the way we welcome guests — both into our state and into our homes.
But some of our greatest aloha is expressed in the way we support our own.
24K MAGIC WORLD TOUR >> Where: Aloha Stadium >> When: 7 p.m., Nov. 8, 10 and 11 (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) >> Tickets: $49.50 and up, available at Ticketmaster.com >> Guest acts: Charlie Wilson (Nov. 8); The Green and Common Kings (Nov. 10 and 11) Every Little League team that makes it to the World Series — which only seems to happen every other year — gets the full weight of the state behind it. When Mililani’s Jasmine Trias and Maui’s Camile Velasco were “American Idol” finalists, the show became appointment television from Kalapana to Kekaha, and our telephone votes carried Trias to a third-place finish.
So when one of our own becomes perhaps the biggest pop star in the world? Well, it’s like we ourselves are along for the ride — singing along to every No. 1 song, gushing over every Super Bowl halftime show, celebrating every Grammy Award win.
And when that pop star comes home for a visit? We throw the biggest party we can.
The hoolaulea for Hawaii’s own Bruno Mars begins Thursday at Aloha Stadium. It lasts for three concerts across four nights, with more than 100,000 of his closest friends having already RSVP’d, “Hell yes.”
BRUNO BY THE NUMBERS >> 19: Top 40 singles >> 11 million: Albums sold >> 79 million: Singles sold >> 7: No. 1 singles as a performer >> 8: No. 1 singles as a songwriter >> 32: Weeks spent at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 >> 32: Countries where Mars has had a No. 1 single >> 11: Grammy Awards won >> 27: Grammy nominations >> 14.049 billion: Total YouTube views for Bruno Mars’ official music videos 24K MAGIC WORLD TOUR >> Miles traveled: 113,201 >> Days: 594 >> Shows: 213 >> Continents: 6 >> Countries: 38 >> States: 29 >> Cities: 123 >> Stops: 141
Take away something as simple as birthplace and Mars is still very much the kind of pop megastar Hawaii fans would love. Start with the fact that he’s half Filipino. So rare has it been for us to see Asians and Polynesians in the national limelight that we grab on for dear life when one — be it in music, movies or sports — rises to national or worldwide prominence, even if he’s not from Hawaii. A Steve Perry-less Journey would not sell out one concert here if it weren’t led by Arnel Pineda, a singer from the Philippines. In the world of sports, Ichiro Suzuki, Troy Polamalu and Jeremy Lin were local faves.
But the “half” in Mars’ ethnic makeup is as important as the “Filipino” to a state that has three times as many multiracial residents per capita as any other state, for we also pride ourselves on our multiculturalism. Sure, racial prejudice exists in Hawaii, but we’re still the state with the most ethnic variety, and Mars embodies that diversity — his father is most prominently Puerto Rican and Jewish and his late mother was Filipino, but he has flecks of other ethnicities laced in with those. For a state of “poi dogs,” one moving the most assuredly toward a true post-racial society, who better to identify with than a pop star who defies racial categorization?
And Mars is a big enough star that even if he wasn’t from Hawaii, the coming shows would be significant. That said, the fact that Mars is “one of us” certainly adds to the fervor surrounding his arrival on these shores this week. And let’s face it — he probably wouldn’t be coming here if he weren’t from here. Honolulu is on one of its greatest runs of concerts in many years, but while more and more stars are finding their way to our islands, the biggest are not visiting at their peak the way Mars is. We’re getting some great acts, but we’re not getting the Taylor Swifts, the Ed Sheerans, the Beyonces of contemporary pop music. Will that change? Mars’ three sellouts seem to have opened the door to more shows at the stadium, with the Eagles and Guns N’ Roses due in December, and there are rumblings that other stars could be on their way.
Whatever happens down the road, with Mars coming to town, Honolulu for once is included in a worldwide tour by an artist in the upper stratosphere. Mars’ 24K Magic Tour has sold well past 2 million tickets worldwide, with revenue surpassing $250 million. The album it was named after was the second-best seller of 2017. Overall, Mars has certified sales of more than 90 million records/downloads in the U.S. alone less than a decade after he put himself on the map with a smooth guest spot on rapper B.o.B.’s chart-topping “Nothin’ on You.”
All of which serves as a reminder of another reason Hawaii loves Bruno: He always remembers where he came from.

The pop superstar born in Honolulu as Peter Hernandez has brought his show to town for the tours following all three of his albums, with each visit growing on pace with his skyrocketing career — from one sold-out show at Blaisdell Arena to three there and now three at Aloha Stadium, a venue with about four times the capacity of the arena. For his hometown fans, it was a long wait through a tour that has gone on for almost two years, but in the end he did not forget about us.
Mars’ backstory is well-known, and it both adds to the Bruno Mars mythology and makes him that much more likable.
He started his career as a 4-year-old Elvis impersonator in Waikiki and entertained at hotel shows throughout his youth. During a “60 Minutes” profile in November 2016, he also recollected, with no negativity or sense of self-pity, how he spent part of his childhood homeless, living with his father and brother in an abandoned shack in Manoa Valley.
Mars has credited his humble beginnings for his work ethic and his start in Waikiki for his broad appeal.
“Because of my upbringing performing for tourists, I had to entertain everyone. Not just black people, not just white people, not just Asian people, not just Latin people. I had to perform for anybody that came to Hawaii,” Mars told Rolling Stone for a November 2016 cover story. (Mars had not granted the Star-Advertiser an interview at press time.)
That requirement to entertain all comers has also resulted in a command of various musical styles. His latest album, 2016’s “24K Magic,” is pretty much a straight-up tribute to old-school R&B and funk, but his prior two albums showed off his versatility as a singer and his dexterity at crossing genres, with forays into belted balladry (the soaring yet somber “When I Was Your Man”); post-punk reggae-rock (the Police-inspired “Locked Out of Heaven”); folksy, island-inflected pop whimsy (“The Lazy Song”); and even an amalgam of styles including Motown and surf rock (“Runaway Baby”).
Those songs and those sounds all come from Bruno. In an era in which so many pop stars lean on hitmakers such as producers Max Martin and Benny Blanco, Mars has had a hand in writing and producing every song he’s appeared on. He works with outside producers at times — most notably Mark Ronson, with whom he recorded the megahit “Uptown Funk” — but compared with his peers, such collaborations are minimal. More commonly, Mars and his production teams — previously The Smeezingtons and now Shampoo Press & Curl — work in the opposite direction, shepherding hits for such artists as Adele (“All I Ask”) and CeeLo Green (“Forget You”), the former earning him one of his 11 Grammys.
SHOWMAN BRINGS THE MAGIC
Mars takes that same hands-on approach with his dancing, that extra something-something that takes him from star musician and singer to maybe the best showman currently working, a worthy successor to great entertainers such as James Brown and Michael Jackson.
Phil Tayag, one of the founding members of the renowned hip-hop dance crew the Jabbawockeez, works with Mars on many of his routines — peep him in the video for “Finesse,” among others — but won’t go so far as to call himself Mars’ choreographer.
“He’s not one of those artists that just wants somebody to prepare something for him,” Tayag told MTV.com in January. “We build everything together. He is very involved in all aspects of what he does when it comes to music production and everything. So it’s the same with dancing and creating and choreographing — super involved. … I was thinking in the beginning that he was just one of these artists that wants to be fed this choreography and all that, but he’s not. He’s super involved in everything, so we create together. He is a choreographer as well.”
The choreography is one part of translating powerfully sung songs to a live platform. Mars sees the brotherhood — in one case literal — he shares with his eight-piece band, the Hooligans, as an even more essential part.
“I think the best part of our show is that you can tell that we’re all friends up there,” Mars said in a documentary short posted to his YouTube page, “and you go in thinking, like, ‘Oh, OK, I’m gonna go see this guy sing these love songs,’ but then you kinda get a treat, you get … one of my best friends, (sideman and writing partner) Philip Lawrence, and me and him are just having the time of our life. You got my brother (Eric Hernandez) on drums, and I think that’s where the magic happens.”

“We use roots as a vehicle or medium to convey emotion. We combine lyrical message with primal rhythms. We are organic in our music and spiritual in the way we play it.- Warren Maxwell, TrinityRoots” Home, Land and Sea is the second album from Trinity Roots and it's roots and reggae of the purest kind. Steeped in mystique, flavored with jazz and infused with soul, there is a sense of timelessness and space present on this album. There is no rush. There are no radio edits. Everything has its place, ebbing and flowing accordingly. From the opening track Aotearoa, "a heartfelt and spiritual ode to our Motherland", TrinityRoots delve deep into the magical soil of this country, and the album is interwoven with soundbites from friends and whanau.
The song’s opening line, “From the tail of the fish to the top” references the Maori creation myth; that Aotearoa New Zealand was fished from the sea by the god Maui. The South Island is his waka (canoe) while the North Island is the fish itself.

Kauai Folk Festival Is Coming In September! Live Music in Hawaii!
The 2019 Kauai Folk Festival is a weekend full of music, dance, food, drink, craft and good times for Kauai residents and visitors to the Garden Island. This year more than 34 performers (multiple Grammy-winning artists and more than twelve international acts) will be playing continuously on five music stages. The Kauai Folk Festival blends traditional music and dance from all over the world with its Hawaiian counterpart. And, for the first time, this event will be held at the Historic Grove Farm Museum in Lihue.
The Kauai Folk Festival showcases Old Time, Americana,  Tropical, and Hawaiian music. Former Kauai resident, and Grammy winner, Taj Mahal, will be one of the more than 34 musical acts filling the air from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on September 28th and 29th, 2019 (rain or shine).
2019 Kauai Folk Festival Musical Line-Up (from the website):
Taj Mahal - Blues legend Taj Mahal has a long history in Hawaii.  As a historian, he has studied the nuances of Hawaiian history and culture.  As a resident performer, he has come to know, play with, and record with countless Hawaiian artists.  His Hula Blues Band is a rotating cast of Hawaiian musicians fusing blues, folk, and Hawaiian music in the inimitable Taj Mahal style!
Kyle Campbell - Heralding from Knoxville, Tennessee, Kyle Campbell is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as the frontman for The Bearded, who's repertoire includes old-time Appalachian dance tunes, jugband, vintage blues and bluegrass. A large part of the band's setlist consists of Campbell's originals as well. All of these sundries come together resulting in a "uniquely East Tennessee sound."
Jonny Fritz - There is no way to categorize Jonny Fritz.  His status among songwriters and the country and folk music elite is something of a phenomenon that has to be seen, heard, and experienced to be believed.  His songs and captivating stage presence are the stuff of legend. You will not forget what you’ve seen and heard…whether you want to or not!  “Dad Country” makes its debut appearance on Kauai at the Kauai Folk Festival.
The Montvales - A French-Appalachian folk duo performing in Hawaii for the first time!
Reeb Willms and Caleb Klauder - Half of the legendary Foghorn Stringband, Reeb Willms and Caleb Klauder have been touring the world as a country, folk, old time, and bluegrass duo for over a decade.  Pitch-perfect harmonies, original songs that seem like they’re 100 years old, and instrumental prowess that will knock your socks of. They’ll also be teaching harmony singing, mandolin, and guitar workshops to festival attendees who want to learn more about their unique and traditional styles.
Slo County Stumblers - Champion fiddler Casy Meikle’s mid-country old time quartet. Hot fiddle and banjo numbers for dancing!
Peter Rowan - Peter Rowan is largely known for his role in Bill Monroe’s legendary Bluegrass Boys and as a bandmate in ‘Old and in the Way’ with fellow legends Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn.  There is no one in folk/bluegrass history who has played with more ensembles, recorded more legendary albums, or explored as many musical landscapes.  Rowan's ‘My Aloha’ Bluegrass Band is formed around his 2017 release “My Aloha” - a fun fusion of bluegrass, folk, and Hawaiian musical styles.
Kilin Reece - Luthier, historian, and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist performing with a number of acts and presenting his groundbreaking research on the undiscovered or long-forgotten links between global musical styles and their Hawaiian counterparts.  He is our soul brother and the link that’s holding this whole concept together.
Mike Bub - Read the liner notes on just about any classic bluegrass album and you’ll see Mike Bub’s name listed as bassist.  His omnipresence in the bluegrass and honky tonk scenes has earned him the nickname “Sir Bub” among many.  He’ll be performing with several ensembles at the Kauai Folk Festival and teaching an upright bass workshop.
Ed Poullard - Ed Poullard is a master fiddler, accordionist, and Cajun accordion builder.  The creole fiddling tradition in Southern Louisiana is one of the many unusual styles of folk music represented at the Kauai Folk Festival.  He will be performing with a full band as well as teaching creole fiddle styles at the Kauai Folk Festival.
Jordy - 18-year-old Kauai-based songwriter and her magnificent band.
Sashamon - Kauai’s reggae hero teams up with Molokai-based ukulele/guitar virtuoso and singer…songs of the old country.
Tim Obrien and Jan Fabricos - As a founding member of the band ‘Hot Rize’, Wheeling, West Virginia native Tim O’Brien is lauded as the greatest multi-instrumental songwriter in folk music.  He has recorded several albums, played with countless ensembles, and brings his powerful voice and instrumentalism to the Kauai Folk Festival in his very first appearance on Kauai alongside his life and musical partner, Jan Fabricius - a singer perfectly matched to O’Brien’s signature sound.
Uncle Shuffelo and his Haint Hollow Hootenany - Hands down the most powerful old time stringband in the world. The Shuffelo and Derryberry families hail from rural Middle Tennessee
Caroline Pond and the Rainbow Stringband - North Carolina native fiddler/singer and her FUN band from Honolulu!
AND MORE!
Artist Workshops (included in ticket price):
This is a new addition to the festival format. Performers will share in workshops on guitar, fiddle, banjo, ukulele and mandolin. Jam stations and loaner instruments will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring instruments.
Dance instructors will teach hula, square dance, swing and two-step. Voice instructors will teach harmony singing, ballads and Hawaiian song.
Food and Drink
Food and drink will be available from vendors, including Kauai Juice Co, Po'okela Sausage, Uncle D's Vegan BBQ, Ya Quddus Bagels, Maui Brewing Co, Kupu Spirits and more.
2019 Kauai Folk Festival Location:
In previous years, the Kauai Folk Festival has been held on the north shore of Kauai. This year it will be more centrally located at the historic Grove Farm Museum, a 100 acre property in the heart of Lihue. Built in 1864 Grove Farm maintains the plantation era environment of years past. The folk and aloha of this festival combines perfectly with this new venue. Proceeds from this event will go toward the preservation efforts of the Grove Farm Museum.
Grove Farm Museum is located at 4050 Nawiliwili Road, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii 96766.

#TGTfeature 012: Bukkha [Moonshine Recordings/Dub-Stuy Records/Infernal Sounds: Valladolid, Spain] Diving deeply back into the bass bins, following France’s digital reggae extraordinaire Manudigital, it is #TGTfeature 012 with heavyweight producer Bukkha, an American based out of Spain. The audio interview was featured on KGNU Community Radio's "Dub Palace" show. This and forthcoming #TGTfeature articles will highlight dedicated musical talents by featuring their recent work as well as an in-depth interview. The low-end enthusiast has released weighty wax on respected labels and tested sound systems around the globe. While he works with a range of tempos and styles, there’s always a sense of dub, or at least dub wisdom, in his work. Prior to his Denver debut at The Black Box, Bukkha spoke about his production work, his Preacha project, limited-edition vinyl, working with vocalists, and much more. A bit about Bukkha: - Heavyweight bass producer, he’s maintained a strong relationship with Moonshine Recordings while also working with labels like Dub-Stuy, Grand Ancestor, Infernal Sounds, Lion Charge, and ZamZam Sounds - Known for his stellar vocal collaborations – a recent example is the grime/trap cut “Chasing Dreams” featuring Rider Shafique - His late-2018 mix for Moonshine is filled with forward-thinking productions, many his own, and demonstrates the potency of proper dubwise sound system music
TGT: How'd your upcoming USA tour come together - seems you're bouncing around a bit? B: I don't know, everything just panned out really well. I ended up hitting up the cities that I didn't get to last year really, for the most part. You know Arcada, Portland, Denver, San Antonio, Maui, so, it's very exciting really. TGT: Yeah, yeah, and a bit eclectic as well... B: Definitely all over the US man, like kind of circular in a way. Oh yeah shoot, even Miami, how I can forget Miami, I'm so excited to go back to Miami. TGT: At this point in your career, do you find it more fun to be still going to new places, do you also enjoy going back to a crowd you've had success with before, and now you're being welcomed again with open arms? B: Both man, both. It's always nice to go to somewhere new, but it's kind of like a home situation - you go to one place, and you've made a really great impression, so like everybody's waiting for you to get back and rock it. Yeah, I just find myself in that position now too, where I can go back to a place, feel welcome, everybody's looking forward to it. It's either as good, or even better than the last time. TGT: Glad to hear that, I know a lot of effort goes into putting these overseas tours together, and do you know big differences between being booked in Spain and mainland Europe, compared to the UK and the US? Or do you feel like the scenes are pretty equal in their expectations and taste? B: Well, I mean, here's the thing, it's like, I think that if you get booked and people go there to see you, then they kind of know what to expect. I don't - I mean I guess I might - surprise people with some of the stuff that I play sometimes because I kind of am all over the place; just like my productions really, I do a lot of steppers, a lot of dub/reggae stuff, but at the same time, I've made dubstep early on, and just starting messing a bit more with drum n bass and jungle, kind of jukey stuff, all that get stuff gets thrown into my sets. I try to add a little something for everybody. TGT: So that means you're not letting the larger perceptions, like that Europeans only love steppers, for example, you're not letting that impact your selections on any given night? B: No, no, no, no. Not at all. TGT: You just mentioned a lot of different genres, has that been part of you as Bukkha, or is that you wanting to get out of the 140 box? B: Ooh - both. Both. And I mean, everybody's gotta grow, I definitely don't want to just stay stuck in a genre or a certain tempo and it keeps things a little bit more interesting. I've done everything from like, I think the slowest tune I've done is 110, and now even I'm working close to the 200bpm range, which I mean would really be 96-99bpm but you know... so yeah, I'm really just all over the place, because I don't want to get bored with it. For me, even when I go to shows, four or five hours of the same stuff, it just kind of gets, for me, a little boring, I just like a little variety. So I do that with my productions as well. I don't want people to get sick of me, too, I think that's probably like a fear, I definitely don't want people to get sick of me, like 'oh shit, here's Bukkha again with some stepper, or here comes some dubstep' - you know, just switch it up man. TGT: That is good advice for all producers, right? Mixing it up is not a bad thing, even if you're well-known for a certain sound. B: Exactly, exactly.
Chasing Dreams by Preacha ft Rider Shafique
TGT: And, can you talk a bit about the relationship between Bukkha and Preacha, your newer project (or alter-ego?) - how do you describe it? B: Man, alright, so here's the thing. Preacha was originally supposed to be kind of like a digital reggae project. That's what I was gonna do. And then somewhere along the way, the new tune I did with Rider Shafique, it was not digital reggae at all, it was just like more grimey, I guess trap, I keep wanting to call it that. I don't know, I'm not even limited with that project anymore, whatever happens, happens. I think the next Preacha project is gonna be like jungle/drum n bass, that's what I'm gonna shoot for. I don't know, so we'll see what happens. TGT: That means, maybe you started Preacha with more of a firm line dividing the two, but then that's kind of disappeared...? B: Exactly, I don't why, but yeah, that's just how it's kind of worked out. TGT: Will we get to hear more of these digital reggae productions though, since that's actually one of my favorite styles of music ever? B: Yeah, actually, yeah man. I'm still gonna do it, and I'm still gonna try and put them out on NICEUP! as Preacha is exclusive to NICEUP! Records. I've sent the label owner, Shepdog, some of the newer stuff, and he's like 'oh no, I love it, I love it, let's try and get a vocalist on it.' So yeah, the last couple of things have been more digital reggae, but also with the intention of maybe trying to go jungle and drum n bass. TGT: And those are working in very similar bpms really, like Chopstick Dubplate they do a lot of jungle obviously, but then they'll have reggae remixes that are basically just cutting the tempo in half, right? B: Yep, yep. TGT: Does that mean you've already got some vocalists lined up for that, or is that still in the works right now? B: Still in the works, definitely got some vocalists in mind, but you know, still gotta see how I get them. That's always the toughest part is communication. TGT: Do you find that you're wanting to go back to vocalists you've worked with - you know given the success of the Rider Shafique track are you hoping to do more with him? - or do you view that as 'that was great' but who else can I work to bring a new tone and new lyrical perspective to your production work? B: Actually, let's see. I've worked a lot with Junior Dread and he's been great. I think I'm kinda gonna give him a little break since we did quite a few tunes together. I've got Killah P on some tunes TGT: Including Dub-Stuy right? B: Exactly, that's how it all first came about. Rider, we've got a couple of things as well, so yeah. I think it's on my last Mooncast mix, I put him in there. I don't know, sometimes it just depends on the tune, you might have a vision, who you want to hear on the tune, but I'm always open to working with new people, and also old, familiar faces. If it works, it works. TGT: I don't wanna get too in-depth on the business side here, but what's your approach to find a new singer to work with? Are you doing this all through Facebook or since you have relationships with a lot of record labels, are they able to help? B: It's a good mix man, most of the time it's me going on Facebook and reaching out, if it just seems like there's a bunch of circles to go through, then I'll reach out to a label... let's say I send an instrumental to a label, and they're like 'this is tune is great, but it could really use a vocalist' or something like that. So I'm like 'OK,' and then you talk about it, and then they might make a recommendation and then they reach out because they might have the link. It's definitely a mix. TGT: And does that mean you've kind of got a dream list of vocalists that you're hoping to work with? B: Yeah [laughs], there's a list, but that list is kind of getting smaller and smaller, as I've been pretty fortunate in working with a good bit of vocalists lately. TGT: Definitely, but I do know you're not scared of sampling classic Jamaican sounds. B: Not at all [laughs].
TGT: I think the most notable recent release is that absolutely killer "Discjockey" with Dubbing Sun... so how did that collaboration come about, since I know Dubbing Sun do a lot of work with Digid usually, so what brought you together, and why'd you decide to tackle such an iconic vocal? B: Well, I was in Austria last year, like around this time, and they had helped set up a couple of gigs for me, so after my gig with Dubbing Sun out in Austria, we just kind of kicked it for a whole week and we worked on a good bit of tunes. Right there and then we had started "Stop Dem" - TGT: the b-side on that? B: - yeah, exactly, the flip. And it was just so weird because we were talking about the WAR label, and we're like we really miss that label they have some really great tunes, blah blah blah, and then maybe a month or two later DJ Madd reached out to me and he was like 'hey, you got some tunes for WAR?' I'm like 'whaaat - what's going on here?' I mean, it was honor, first of all, that he reached out; secondly, we already had one tune, and then I was like 'yo, yo, David' - that's Dubbing Sun - 'David, you got another sample somewhere around there?,' a sample you know, we can use for a tune? And he was all pumped man, he couldn't believe it either. So he was like, let me reach out to one of the other guys from Dubbing Sun because it's a collab project, and so he got that "Disc Jockey" sample going on - it's like 'oh bro, this is perfect.' And the funny thing about that tune was it started off as another stepper, so we're gonna have two stepper tunes on there. When I sent it to Madd, he goes like, 'this sounds great, but can we do more of a dubstep version of this?' And I was like 'ahhhh man, alright, cool.' So we did that, we just switched it up and then it completely took on a whole new body and it sounded great. The other one, the stepper version, is like a dubplate song. Somebody's gonna be lucky enough to hear it whenever I play out. TGT: Well, keep in mind you're coming to Denver soon - B: yeah [laughs] TGT: - we're happy to hear that! And related to that, I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on these limited edition vinyl-only releases? WAR is 500 copies, it's a very very limited thing... B: Man, OK - it's kind of a double-edged sword, I think [sighs]. OK, like, this is gonna sound really funny: I don't play vinyl, but I love collecting it. I might play it at the house and stuff, but it never leaves my home. I treasure it. But nowadays, people seem to be, or promoters might look at, Spotify, and look how many plays you might have on Spotify. And if you've only got a vinyl-only release, it's not showing up on Spotify. It's either or, I don't know how much it affects what... me personally, I like them. Some exclusive thing, whoever got it, got it. And that person either is gonna collect it and/or play it out. And then only that person has it, which I think is cool. It does give it a certain exclusivity, not everybody should have the tune, because then everybody's just gonna play the same tunes over again, and over and over and over again. TGT: But I suppose you're in a better position because you've got the digital right [laughs]? B: [laughs] Yeah, exactly, I don't know - it's cool, I mean - I made it [laughs]. TGT: I do want to kind of rewind because I noticed an interesting thing... you mention very specifically on your Facebook profile that this started as a bedroom project and it's obviously evolved well beyond that, while I find a lot of producers kind of want to pretend that they didn't start in a bedroom and that they just magically emerged on a club floor with ten killer 'plates you know - so why have you decided to include that in how you present yourself, and do you think that's an important message for other DJs? B: To be honest, I really never gave it much thought you know? For me, it just really is how it started. And the thing is, I didn't start making dubstep. Like, I was just making... weird music. Like weird instrumental music. When I first started I was listening to a lot of Radiohead, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, these bands... when I first started they really blew my mind. Then I started getting more into the avant garde electronic stuff, like Squarepusher, Luke Vibert/Wagonchrist, Aphex Twin - so I was like 'man, how are they doing this stuff?' So I was just in my bedroom trying to do this sort of stuff. TGT: What time period would that be? B: Oh - let's see, this was probably in 2004-2005, I was in the last couple years of my college career and I was kind of looking for an outlet too, you get senioritis and just looking for something to get rid of that stress, and yeah, I was doing that... and what was funny also, Luke Vibert was doing grime and I guess dubstep-ish beats, but I didn't know what it was called, it just sounded really good to me, really bass-heavy and all that stuff. And basically, when the Dubstep Warz show with Mary Anne Hobbs came on, a friend showed it to me and I was just like 'holy crap, this is what that is, alright.' So I don't know, that sound just kind of stuck with me, and I kind of stuck with it, and practiced it, and not even gonna say mastered it because it's still evolving and there's nothing to master - you do what you do and hope that somebody likes it I guess. But I think really as long as the producer likes it, then other people will like it, too. You believe in your product, so to speak. TGT: For sure, you need to right? If you as a music-maker are satisfied with what you've made, then I don't think it an inappropriate assumption that there will be listeners out there who want to hear it, so the challenge is more getting that music to the right people, yeah? B: Exactly, exactly.
TGT: What methods do you use to try and reach fans at this point in time, or do you feel like you've gotten over that initial hill of exposure? B: Luckily, I've been working with the right labels for what I do. And because of that, then more labels have reached out, and they kind of know what they're gonna get from me. Although man, it's still is kind of just tough, because I might want to experiment a little bit more, and it just might not fit a certain... so, the only other thing that helps is doing mixes, or guest mixes for radio shows, and if somebody hears it and really likes it - that's great. The last mix that I did for Moonshine, that was a great help, and the timing was perfect. Everybody was heading out to Outlook [Festival], so a lot of people were downloading it, and then I reposted it again after Outlook, and even more people started downloading it, because there were like some tunes in there that, I didn't know but Mala and Truth and N-Type were like pushing at Outlook, so people were like 'well, who did this tune' and they saw that it was me, and it was like holy crap. So yeah man, the timing was perfect for that mix. I think it surprised a lot of people because it included a lot of stuff that they just didn't expect from me because I had been doing more dubwise stuff. TGT: Yeah, and does that mean you're maybe trying to get a step away from always having there be a Jamaican air, shall we say? B: No man, not really, it's always gonna be a part of my sound I think. I'm a sucker for delays and spring crashes, so that's always just gonna be a part of my sound I think, I think no matter what I do it's always gonna be a part of that project... TGT: I did want to ask a bit more, I've really enjoyed that Moonshine mix, that's the one that came out about five months ago, so we're talking October 2018... you've had a very long relationship with Moonshine, so how did that relationship first come to be, and does that mean we're going to see more Bukkha out on Moonshine in 2019? B: Yeah, yeah, there's - alright, well my relationship with Moonshine was - let's see, 2019... - almost ten years, I think it probably started around 2011. That relationship started because of Radikal Guru, so I had known Radikal Guru since the beginning of both of our careers - quote unquote careers, because I've never really had a career [laughs]. So yeah, because of him I linked with Moonshine, and Moonshine gave me the first remix opportunity. And they've been wanting tunes, but for whatever reason I just - I don't know, because I had a regular job, I never saw it as 'I need to this, I can do that.' I was happy with just my regular job and making music on the side, so you know, that was that. But always, I just kept sending them tunes so they might want to play or maybe release. And it did take a while, I think I got my first release on Moonshine in 2016. The recent mix that I did has a lot of forthcoming tunes, but not all of them are Moonshine. Some of them are gonna be Infernal Sounds, the more dubstep ones... and then a good bit of them are gonna be on Moonshine actually. TGT: How often does your name get brutally mispronounced? B: Ooh, more than mispronounced, misspelled. Which I think is really funny. And you know what, recently I just found out that in I guess Croatian - I'm hoping that's the language they speak in Croatia - Bukkha means noise, it translates to noise. I thought that was pretty funny, oh shit man, that could be another meaning to my name, noise [laughs]. TGT: So what was the original inspiration then, because in some ways you know, Bukkha has a very dubstep feel to it, but it's not a word, right? B: Exactly, exactly. OK, long story short, basically I got the name from - I don't know how many people remember the show Wildboyz, it was the spinoff of Jackass - so in one of the episodes, I forget, Steve-O and the other guy [Chris Pontius], they go to India and they spend time with a cannibal tribe, the Aghori tribe there in India, and one of the guys in the tribe, his name was Buka. So I was like, 'OK, I kind of like the sound of that,' so I just jacked it and spelled it a little bit differently. And you know, stupid, I just had one of those moments where I'm gonna take this and misspell it and that'd be cool - I didn't know any better. I don't know, the name's cool, it's kind of like easy, I think [laughs], but I guess not if people mispronounce it and misspell it. I don't know, but yeah, I like it. TGT: Yeah, I think 'boo-kah' makes sense, but I could certainly see people trying to say 'buck-a' or something... B: Oh yeah, yeah, 'buck-a' yeah, they say that one a lot [laughs]. TGT: As long as they don't read 'bukkake' it's probably alright... B: Yeah, awww, yeah but I make fun of that - I make fun of that, too - I call myself that as well... how do you think I got my name? I like that genre of pornography - and they're like 'oh my god' - it's like 'no, I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding.' TGT: My understanding, this is going to be your first gig here in Denver, correct? B: Yes... TGT: Especially when you're coming to a new market - but obviously Denver has a big reputation for dubstep and bass music at this point in time - so what's your mindset when you know most of this crowd is gonna be familiar with what you've put out, and a lot of people will probably have listened to that Moonshine mix, whether they've already heard it or they're gonna check it out once it's being emphasized before the show; so what do you want to bring us, and what can the crowd be expecting on March 12? B: A lot of Bukkha [laughs]. A lot of my favorite tunes that I've made, a lot of my newer stuff that I haven't put in mixes yet, so if you like my sound then you'll like the new stuff. And then I'll also have stuff that friends have sent me, some dubstep or the dubwise tip - it's definitely gonna be something for everybody, it's how I do things. I don't want to say I educate, because that just kind of sounds a little pretentious, but I just want to show the people there are different sounds, different styles, you don't just have to be into this one thing, there's everything, and it all fits together if you just really listen to it, it all truly does fit together. TGT: Do you give much thought to who you're co-headlining with? In this case, it's Six Sunsets and Opus, does that enter into your thought process at all? B: To be honest, yeah. I did do a Shitty Dubstep event in the UK; now, if you know anything about Shitty Dubstep, you'll see that it's nothing but dubstep. And, that's probably the most nervous I had ever been, because it's been such a long time since I just did dubstep, and I don't really talk to too many of the new dubstep cats. So man, I just really had to dig deep and search for dubstep tunes, the hottest stuff for at that moment, even if it was new and nobody's even heard it... I reached out to some friends, 'oh yeah man, here have this one, have that one.' So yeah, but it all worked out, it was all great. I played dubstep, but I also did play "Discjockey," like "Discjockey" just went off - I mean, whether you like dub or not, it's just that perfect mix of trap/grime/low-end, but with a dub sample... TGT: Any final thoughts on things... B: ... I hope to be around as long as the greats like Channel One and Jah Shaka - that would be great, you know? Just play tunes, play music that I love, hopefully, my ears and eyes will still function in a way that I can make music still...

Red, Red Wine
by Ken Goring
January 20, 2017
UB40 Maui Arts and Cultural Center
Even though they’ve been coming to Hawaii for as long as anyone can remember, a UB40 concert at the Maui Arts and Cultural center is still a big event - a gathering of the tribe. Tickets run a hundred bucks, almost two hundred for VIP, and it’s eight dollars a beer. But still they come. They come by the thousands, some even flying in from Moloka’i and the Big Island to see the show.
Some might consider UB40 merely a one-hit wonder from the 80’s, so wouldn’t it would be fair to wonder why? My deadhead friend Chad was baffled too. “My wife’s local friends from Molokai are unreasonably excited to see UB40,” he complained. For him UB40 comes off as lightweight and cheesy- their sound too electronic, too synthesised, and not nearly spiritual enough, not rasta or Jamaican enough to be taken seriously.
But Chad grew up in Detroit, not Hawaii, and so he’ll never understand. In fact, for the people of Hawaii, the only reggae band that could top UB40 would be Bob Marley and the Wailers themselves. And even so, Bob would never have become the icon that he is here if it hadn’t been for UB40 and their version of “Red Red Wine.”
I can still remember the moment that song came into my life. I was in eighth grade at St. Anthony’s catholic school in Wailuku waiting for my mom to pick me up and hanging out with a buddy named Kai. We were probably talking about surfing when he suddenly caught the nasal strains of “goes to my hea-head” emanating from the window of a passing lowered mini-truck. He stopped what he was saying, mid-sentence, to smile his approval and say, “Yeah, that’s the song! Reggae, ha! Red Red Wine!” and as the truck pulled away he began chanting, “JANK JANK JANK” to simulate the fading rhythm of the organ/guitar. I remember him grinning and bobbing his head in a strange new forward-thrusting motion. From that point on, I watched as reggae became the music of Hawaii’s youth.
It wasn’t okay with everyone at the time. Older Hawaiians felt we were losing our real culture to a foreign music that was not for them. But ukuleles are the most accessible instrument in the islands and the clipped resonance of the thing makes it perfect for skanking out a basic reggae rhythm. Also ukes are easy to carry and pass around, “easy” being the key word. Hawaiian songs are hard to learn if you don’t speak Hawaiian, which most of us don’t. They require study and training and the average local person just wants to sing. Just like the working class Brits, they love oldies and country and simple songs about love and suddenly, with the ukulele and the reggae strum together, any song could be a local song, and “island music” was born.
For those that don’t know, “island music” is the term for the reggae-infused, ukulele-based music made by local people in Hawaii. It was originally called jawaiian, which was a blending of Jamaican with Hawaiian but it was a dumb-sounding name so it was eventually dropped. Any old song can be an island music hit if it’s done with an ukulele in the reggae style, the most egregious example that comes to mind is a local version of “Loving Touching Feeling” by Journey, and the whole concept comes from the UB40 covers on those Labour of Love albums back in the day.
UB40 concerts in the past were always what we call a “shit show” meaning way too many drunk people and a chaotic vibe that always leads to fights. This year seemed different, even with the rain and crowds, it seemed kind of peaceful. I was checking ID’s at the beer garden gate and almost everyone was over forty. It seemed like the crowd had begun aging out. You be over forty.
But the band played a perfect show for two solid hours and even though a lot of people left early; some because of the rain, some because they were too wasted, most in attendance sang and danced to the very end. I don’t even think of myself as a UB40 fan but I knew every word, and I wasn’t alone. Of course it ended with a full-throated, sing-along rendition of “Red Red Wine” that had the place singing and swaying in unison, and the crowd staggered away happy as could be. As we watched the volunteers picking up the empty beer cups my manager turned to me to and said, “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

Saint Lucia in Top Six Honeymoon Destinations Revealed in Recent Survey of Experienced, Specialty Travel Agents
Travel Leaders Group’s Vacation website highlights the most popular destinations honeymooners love, including St. Lucia, Jamaica, Bora Bora, Riviera Maya, Italy and Hawaii
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 15, 2018 — Couples narrowing down their honeymoon destination ideas can seek guidance from the Top 6 Honeymoon Destinations revealed in the results from a recent survey of nearly 150 travel agents who specialize in honeymoon and destination weddings. The top destinations are St. Lucia, Jamaica, Bora Bora/the Tahitian Islands, Riviera Maya, Italy and Hawaii. The survey was recently conducted by Vacation, an online travel advice planning resource that provides expert travel content powered by Travel Leaders Group (www.travelleadersgroup.com).
Each destination includes agent-approved and client-tested ideas for activities, excursions, food and more, showcasing why these predominantly island locales are among the most romantic, fun and satisfying places to spend a honeymoon or any romantic getaway.
Here are the top six honeymoon destinations:
1. St. Lucia.
The beaches, rainforest, luxury resorts, cuisine, history, lush landscape and majestic Pitons on St. Lucia’s west coast make this island in the Eastern Caribbean perfect for romance, especially for those who want to explore their adventurous side.
For example, the travel advisors surveyed recommend that couples go scuba diving in the warm blue waters to see exotic ocean life after taking a tour along the coast of the island on a catamaran watercraft. The truly adventurous may love a hike up the scenic Pitons, two impressive volcanic spires that are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or experience a volcano tour in a 4×4 Jeep.
After a full day, relax with a mud bath at the volcanic Sulphur Springs in Soufriere, or indulge your sweet tooth by booking a cocoa plantation tour at Hotel Chocolat, where guests can make their own chocolate bar, suggests Bonnie J. Laferriere, a New Hampshire-based advisor.
2. Jamaica.
Blissful couples seeking a more laid-back vibe will enjoy the allure of Jamaica, where the reggae music genre was born. Newlyweds can enjoy the waterfall vistas on an excursion to Blue Hole in the Ocho Rios area or a romantic sea salt and hot stone massage.
For those wanting to try something unusual, several travel professionals recommend a horseback ride in the ocean. A quick splash along the shallow waters of a white-sand beach is a unique way to spend quality time with that special someone and end the day with a candlelit dinner on the beach or on a sunset cruise.
For those who prefer to immerse themselves directly in the incredibly blue waters, “there are local guides to assist you and teach you about Jamaica,” says Lori Randle, a New York travel agent.
3. Bora Bora and Tahitian Islands
Overwater bungalows, true luxury, wellness and spas are a few ways travel agents use to describe Bora Bora and the Tahitian Islands as an exotic honeymoon destination.
“A stay in a Tahitian overwater bungalow is much imitated, but never equaled in design and opulence,” says Connecticut-based travel agent Eric Ardolino. “Each bungalow has its own staircase right into the ocean and your dining room table inside has a glass top that looks into the water, so you can watch the fish below!”
After breakfast, which is delivered from an outrigger canoe, swim in the calm, stunning turquoise waters around the motu (“an island off an island”) where your bungalow is located.
Tahiti has a faraway mystic vibe, but it’s easier than you think to get there, especially for people who are on the West Coast of the United States,” says Texas-based travel advisor Laura Kreitz. “The overall experience is just magical.”
4. Riviera Maya, Mexico
A honeymoon in Riviera Maya lends more luxury treatment with a shorter travel time for a postnuptial getaway along Mexico’s northeastern Yucatan Peninsula.
From all-inclusive beachfront resorts to ancient Mayan ruins, this many-splendored region can suit the tastes of almost any couple.
Take a day trip inland along the Yucatan Peninsula to visit the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá and climb to the top of El Castillo, an awe-inspiring temple pyramid. Or be “wowed” by a spectacular show at Xcaret, an eco-archeological park, where 300 artists recreate the history of Mexico.
For the sporty types, visit Xplor Park for jungle ziplining and tours of underground rivers with astounding rock formations.
5. Italy
There are many cities in Italy that offer the allure of romance coupled with thousands of years of culture.
For those who want to spend time on the beach, consider a relaxing honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast to admire the cerulean blue waters and breathtaking cliff-top views. “It’s more exclusive and can also be combined with touring the rest of Italy,” says Amanda Smerdel, a travel professional located in Ohio.
Spend time in Florence, the epicenter of Renaissance culture, and experience private museums tours, cooking classes, and day trips to local cities like Pisa. Or, while on an excursion to Pompeii, explore the remnants of an ancient Roman town preserved by volcanic ash.
6. Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands are not only an amazing travel destination, but also easy for American newlyweds to reach for their honeymoons. No passport required! “You can be as active or sedate as you want,” says Pennsylvania-based travel advisor Helga Leonard.
Every Hawaiian island has its own distinct flair and attractions. Maui offers luxury beachfront resorts and the epic Road to Hana trip. Oahu draws honeymooners with its urban-metro feel and world-class surfing. In Kauai, happy couples can explore jaw-dropping natural wonders by hiking to waterfalls, such as the cascading Wailua Falls. These islands are perfect for couples who want to relax on the beach, tee off at a well-known golf course, or take an adventurous hike in a National Park.

Sept. 30, 2018
My final cavity fillings were done this week (one thousand dollars later, not including the four hundred my family helped me with, what the heck insurance??). I received my first chicken pox shot (another one hundred and fifty dollars! Does insurance even do anything??), and I’m on my way to finishing up my medical requirements to be cleared into the Peace Corps. My anxiety about the PC is overwhelming. Every day is a day closer to having to leave this place and start on a new adventure. I am so worried that I may be making the wrong choice. I am absolutely in love with Maui; I have never felt this kind of contention in my life. This place is unreal, the people are beautiful, and the island is just an amazing place that I wish my friends and family could experience. But Peace Corps has been my dream for awhile; it will be stressful, and it is going to be the hardest two years of my life, but I am going to be so happy that I did it when I am older. It is an experience that only so many people get to do, and I am so lucky that I have been offered a position with the Corps.
Yet, I am still so worried about so many things that I didn’t think I was going to be concerned about. I am so afraid that I am going to do a terrible job. I am scared my back pain will get worse and that I will have to leave early, I am worried about being so far away from everyone and feeling isolated and alone, I am afraid of leaving the people here because I have grown close to them.  This is a fear I haven’t felt since I left for college.
It is just another step up from what I did when I left for college right? Like, when I was leaving for college I was scared because I was leaving my home, my friends, my family, and everything I knew, for a place that was so foreign to me. Flagstaff was literally just a four hour drive from my home, but it felt like a new world that I was not ready for. Now, I am preparing to leave my home in Hawaii, for a country that I know little about. I don’t speak the language, I know little about the culture, I have never even left this country, besides one family vacation to Baja California, which I don’t think really counts as leaving the country. I am literally doing what I did in August of 2012, but now it’s to another country, to work a job I know nothing about. I am beyond anxious. I am scared out of my mind. This is not what I was expecting to feel at all, especially this so far out! That four hour drive to my dorm room seems so small now.
There are still four months until I leave, but those weeks are going to frikkin’ fly by, and before I know it I will be on a plane to a country that is beyond foreign to me. I don’t even know what my motivation for doing the peace corps is anymore!
Maybe that is what I should do. I should list out what is my motivation for going now. I am not trying to get out of Arizona anymore. That was one major motivator. Moving to Hawaii has satisfied that desire. I want to do something new: Moving to Hawaii and teaching has satisfied that craving, but teaching here could only be fun and new for so long, and I can always come back and teach here again afterwards. So there is new motivation: It will be new, I will learn a lot from it, I will experience things very few people ever get to experience, I may be able to inspire others to do more in their life too. I need to remember that, what I am doing is inspirational to others to do more in their life. I want people to do what they love in life. There is so much that everyone can do with their life if they just push themselves. I am listening to Logic (a rap artist for my readers that are not up on current music) and he is literally saying the exact thing that I am typing: put your [airplane O2] mask on and do it, then help other people out. I am going to help others out by doing something inspirational. If I can get this stuff done, if I can get my degree, if I can work in Oregon as a firefighter, if I can move to Hawaii to teach children about science, and if I can go into the Peace Corps to help people in far off villages, then other people can do it too. If other people can do it, then the world will be a better place. If the world is a better place, then more people will do more.
There is motivation. Make the world a better place. Save the world. Let’s save the world.
Next, I need to figure out what I will do with my life afterwards. Teach again in Hawaii for a couple years, get my master’s degree in education from University of Hawaii, or maybe study somewhere in another country (New Zealand has interested me ever since a friend of mine showed me a folk/reggae artist from their), continue to teach for a couple of years in some weird place (Alaska? Kauai? Patagonia? Marshall Islands?), work on my Ph.D. and teach at a university, inspire young people to become teachers, eventually earn tenure, run for public office and spread socialist ideas to help poor people break free from their economic chains of poverty, make the world a better place. I’ll be found by a woman somewhere along the way and she won’t get annoyed with me and we’ll probably have family somewhere between all of that. Continue to make the world a better place.
Maybe none of that happens. Maybe I just end up staying in my air conditioned classroom and teach 8th grade science for the rest of my life here on Maui. Even then, I am helping students that have hard lives, and I am making the world a better place. That is all that really matters right?
I’ll just focus on what is in front of me right now.

Huntington Beach city overview
The most important elements of Huntington Beach were the oil wells before they dried up and were sold off; the economy of the area was based on this resource. Nonetheless, the inhabitants had mixed feelings about the oil rigs sticking out. Since then the appearance changed, many different types of houses popped up.
Bungalows, colossuses with an ocean view from the rooftop, local grocery stores, bars, restaurants, and parks decorate this fantastic place. Little stores may still be found here, which is quite rare nowadays in Southern California because residential communities took over their places. Property taxes are reasonable here.
If you are looking for a safe neighborhood, Downtown is an ideal place: the main police station is not too far. Car theft is the most common crime, but criminality is not significant.
The giant 4th of July celebration is the most significant event in Downtown, with fantastic fireworks on the oceanfront and an awesome parade down Main St. every year. Surfing championships -the city’s nickname is “Surf City USA”- and air shows also play an important role in the social life here. So, are you already in the mood to check up the homes for sale in Huntington Beach CA?
Art-A-Faire is one of the main attractions of the area. You may find local artists selling their products on every Friday at the Pier. Do you want to have your own private party at night? Call your friends to organize a get-together at one of the fire pits on the beach. But it is important to know that the city and the state beach close at 11 PM, so you cannot shuffle until dawn.
Seafood Zone and McFadden offers you great eating opportunities. The favorite of the surfers is seafood tacos. If you strive for a little luxury, Duke’s Huntington Beach, this ritzy steakhouse will satisfy your needs offering you such special dishes as filet mignon with Maui onion jam, watercress sauce, and creamed corn. Ebi-Star Restaurant is also suitable to fulfill your higher demands with such delicacies as gourmet crab legs. They organize boozy weekend champagne brunches too. Celebrities know well the benefits of this place, just as pro tennis player Scott Lipsky and David Martin, Alien Ant Farm singer Dryden Mitchell or adult entertainment star Jenna Jameson. Many popular bands are coming from here too, such as the reggae band The Dirty Heads and the teen band Hello Goodbye.
If you are interested in car shows, Huntington Beach is the ideal place for you. You can visit Concours d’Elegance or the Beachcruiser Meet. Here you can see such car miracles as the ‘50s Mercedes Benz or Lamborghini 400GT. Do you like running? You will love the Surf City USA Marathon, where more than 20000 runners participate every February. The event is located along the oceanside. As you run on, you will meet live bands trying to entertain you. And what is awaiting you at the finish? A free beer garden, where you can celebrate with your running mates.
The lovers of movies will not be disappointed either: they can enjoy the SoCal Film Fest every September with interesting workshops, celebrity guests, and panels. Their program also contains award giving ceremonies for writers, directors, cinematographers and actors. This fantastic place also offers a stop for the annual Association of Volleyball Players Beach Volleyball Tour, which hosted such famous international champions as April Ross and Casey Jennings. Another reason to visit the beautiful beach.
Another gorgeous activity that you can enjoy on the beach is biking. You can rent bikes from Bargain Bike Rentals on the 5th Street. The cost is 10 dollars per day; you can ride to Newport Beach or Laguna Beach. Or you would rather go on foot or run? Paved trails are there to do so.
Do you want to organize a fancy program with your family? Fuzion is a new family entertainment complex for the residents in Huntington Beach. You can choose from an array of modern arcade games to entertain yourselves. But if you are keen on retro games, there is a section that gives place for such classics as “Ms. Pac Man”. If you want something steeper, you can chase after your family members with a laser pistol in Laser Tag. After the fun, you can have a sushi at the in-house Japanese restaurant.
