Hey, everyone. This is Ryen / kithtaehyung, and I am temporarily opening both gfx and writing requests to fundraise for the Maui Fire Victims.
To keep explanations short: I'm simply using this blog to spread awareness of where and how to donate, while offering my skillset as a way to help the state I consider a second home.
There will be categories for requests, but you can also use this post as a way to learn about contributing if you don't want/need anything other than wanting to help.
What's Happening: Thousands sought shelter in evacuation centers after at least 271 buildings burned, leveling much of Lahaina town in Maui, HI.
RELIEF FUNDS TO CHOOSE FROM:
Maui Strong Fund
Maui Food Bank
Maui Humane Society
Maui United Way
Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation
Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement
Any other organization of your choice if you don't see yours here. The links listed go straight to each organization, and I encourage everyone to do your research before choosing.
CATEGORIES FOR REQUESTS:
Graphics (portfolio)
Drabbles (masterlist, sfw/nsfw)
3tan Drabbles (+18 series, sfw/nsfw)
Form for tracking donations/requests: ENTER HERE (Please read through. There's a lot of info, but I wanted to make it as thorough as possible. Let me know if you have any questions!) FORM CLOSES ON 23.08.19
NOTE: Even though the minimum I am setting is $5 for requests, you can literally donate any amount you feel compelled to and it doesn't have to be for a request at all. If you don't have the means or don't want to donate, please at least spread this post!
DISCLAIMER: There may be a long wait time for requests, but this is for a cause I feel strongly about. I am making it a goal to finish all the requests received, whether it's 1 or 100.

There is a large community fundraiser benefiting those effected by the destruction in Maui going on in the TTRPG community.

JOANNA'S FAMILY NEEDS HELP
A new Greater Gatsby is out today, and even though she's not in this particular episode, now's a great time to talk about Fig and Ford's very own Claudette Knickerbocker, the fabulous Joanna Sotomura, who among other things has elevated quite a few Tin Can and Shipwrecked projects with her wonderful talents.
Joanna is from Hawaii, and her family owns a Christmas store in Maui. The store's employees, all residents of Maui, have been greatly impacted by the horrific wildfires, many losing their homes, and Joanna's family has set up a GoFundMe to help them rebuild their lives from the ashes. You can even keep your donation from being publicly listed if you so choose.
In order to avoid opportunistic scammers, people are understandably being encouraged to send their donations to established, well-known organizations, so more private fundraisers like this one will not be getting the bulk of the attention. But since we know Joanna and that this is not a scam, it is a great way to help in the aftermath of Maui and know exactly where your money is going--into the pockets of these everyday people devastated by a horrible tragedy.
If you're looking to cast a wider net, I'd also highly recommend the Maui Food Bank, the Maui Strong Fund, or the Maui Humane Society if you want to help out some furry friends.
I know times are hard and money is tight. I mean, I'm working two jobs and still barely making my meager ends meet. But at least I have an apartment/home to stress over paying the rent for. A lot of the people of Maui can no longer say the same.
If you haven't already, please help if you can!

So a lot of you have probably seen this image from Lahaina, Hawai'i:
Tumblr media
And aside from the historic Waiola Church (the triangular roof on fire on the left side of the photo), you might notice that there's another large building on the right side. Those two towers are — or rather, were — part of the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, one of the earliest Jodo-Shinshu Buddhist temples in Hawai'i, established in 1904.
The main temple building, school, and minister's residence are completely destroyed, as are the homes of many of the temple members.
They're doing an online fundraiser for relief efforts on Maui, which can be accessed here: https://hongwanjihawaii.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Maui-Wildfire-Disaster-Relief-Fund-Drive.pdf

…..that will not land the way she wanted it to.
The people who will have watched it are pissed off, the people she wanted to watch could careless and the people who don’t know it happened won’t know they missed anything because she’s a non story now. People think she’s fake and especially with the election cycle coming up, people have a lot less tolerance for fake people.
Yep.
There's been a slow but mighty shift in how the public treats, sees, considers celebrities and influencers in recent years. It started in the late '10s, but really kicked off in March 2020 with the hypocrisy of pandemic response (Gal Gadot's "Imagine" video played a huge role and some consider it to be an inflection point) and hasn't let up since.
Pre-cultural shift, celebrities and influencers had a pretty high status in society. They could be all and no action, as long as there were pretty pictures on social media. They could be preachy without much backlash because we didn't know any better. The public wasn't as educated on fake news and misinformation so we bought their PR as fact. There was more tolerance for famous people's bullshit because we couldn't hold them accountable and because we didn't know where the PR started and reality began.
But post-cultural shift? We've been educated on fake news and misinformation and we can tell when we're being lied to. We know enough about PR and media relations to read between the lines. We know how to use media (traditional and social) to hold people accountable. We require celebrities and influencers to commit to their promises and follow-through on their actions. We're hyper-aware of the disparities and incongruities between us that we have no more tolerance for preaching and other Famous People bullshit (aka entitlement).
The easiest, biggest, best way to see this public shift is in celebrity humanitarian aid, celebrity activism, and celebrity philanthropy. Pre-pandemic, celebrity humanitarian aid was exclusively about the celebrity and giving the celebrity credit. The celebrity doing good. The celebrity donating big money. The celebrity raising awareness. The celebrity being recognized for raising awareness. Think of the Ice Bucket Challenge from 2014: where famous people were praised for dumping ice water on themselves and name-dropping their friends. All good times, but dumping ice water on yourself doesn't actually fund or support ALS research. Yet here we all were, cooing over the latest celebrity to take an ice bath and namedrop their friends, all in the name of charity. In hindsight, it doesn't make any sense, right?
(Obviously there's one exception here, and that's the "in the arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrms of the aaaaaangelllllllllllllll" SPCA commercial. Sara McLachlan, keep doing what you're doing.)
Post-pandemic, celebrity humanitarian aid is totally different - it's about the people being helped and the community being impacted. The celebrities use their platforms to elevate the involved experts who do the advocacy instead. The celebrities have (mostly) taken themselves out of the story. The celebrities are having, and focusing on, actionable success before they promote their involvement. It's about using media to elevate others, not yourself. They put their money where their mouths are. They (mostly) punch up to corporations, conglomerates, politicians, and other Famous People (instead of always punching down to the rest of us).
Consider the Maui Fire disaster relief last year - Oprah and The Rock put together a pre-pandemic fundraiser where they told the general public to donate their money. It was immediately panned because they were preaching "do as we say". It was made clear to them, via social media backlash, that if they wanted this fundraiser to be successful, they needed to put up their own money first. This wouldn't have happened without the cultural shifts in accountability, media, and how we want our famous people to serve us (for lack of a better phrase).
Anyway, circling back to Meghan. Meghan is still riding on the early '10s celebrity train that she became famous on, when celebrities could be all talk, when she could be preachy, when she could be "do as I say and not what I do." She hasn't evolved with the times and that's why all of her charity work and advocacy falls shorts, every single time. Because we know better. We see right through her. We know she isn't giving her own money. We know she doesn't support the actual work, and if she doesn't support the work enough to back it up with her own money, then why should we care? Why should we listen? We know she only wants the credit, and we know that because she buys an award for everything she does. She's in it for the attention and the credit.
If Megehan actually used 2024 strategy - having actionable success before self-promotion, taking herself out of the story, investing with her own money and disclosing that she invested her own money, and elevating the experts or the community instead - then she could be very effective in the charity world. She would be a legitimate player, or influencer, in global charity and philanthropy.
But she only wants credit. That's not inspiring in the least.
And Harry's no different. Two peas in a pod, using the '00s "Oprah's couch advocacy" concept in a 2024 world that has left them so far behind in the dust that not even Mad Max can find them. Why should we pay them any attention?

Radio Free Monday
Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Just a periodic reminder: I know not everyone has the energy or money to volunteer or give, but I wanted to remind folks that even reblogging helps -- reblogging RFM, yes, but also (or, really, instead) taking a moment to go to a tumblr post and reblog the post helps too. You are also always welcome to crosspost to your social media of choice or post a link from there to here.
Ways to Give:
alirhi linked to a fundraiser to get herself, her mother, and her sister stable housing; they are currently staying in their cars in a a dangerous parking lot. They have a friend who will let them park a camper in her yard, but the camper there currently is unlivable, and they haven't been able to find an affordable replacement. With two of the family on disability it is difficult for them to keep up with bills and also save for housing. You can read more, reblog, and find giving information here.
Anon linked to a fundraiser for West Maui Animal Clinic, a Lahaina-based clinic where one of their vet school classmates works; the clinic burned to the ground in the fires, and many of the staff lost everything. They are raising funds to try and keep paying clinic staff while they figure out how to recover. You can read more and support the fundraiser here. (sorry to credit you as anon, but your username wasn't a tumblr handle and I wasn't confident the username without stops was the right one.)
Beck is raising funds to help cover the vet bill for their tortie cat, Lady Clytemnestra, who had to be treated for an abscess; you can read more and reblog here or support the gofundme here (as a warning, there is a photo of the injury at the fundraiser if you scroll).
Anon linked to a fundraiser for lumierew, to cover the vet bills for her cat's spinal surgery. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.
squidgiepdx and squidge.org are running a fall fundraiser; they are a small fansite that provides image and podfic hosting, site hosting, and a story archive for the fannish community, which runs them about $2K per year. They are now incorporated as a 501c3 (a nonprofit) in the US, and so your donations are tax-deductible. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.
News to Know:
blackestglass is running the fourth annual Chromatic Characters Podfic Anthology, which collects podfics of stories of less than 1500 words and center characters of color. This year's optional theme is "solidarity" and the due date for submissions is September 12th; they are encouraging authors who'd like to write a story for the anthology to team up with a podficcer by commenting at the info post. They are also looking for technical betas who can commit to 2 hours of beta listening the week of Sept. 13, to check for volume issues and other errors in the files and metadata. If you are a person of color who would be willing to lend their services as a contextual content beta (formerly known as cultural sensitivity listeners), they'd love to have you onboard as well. You can read more and comment here to volunteer or ask a question, DM the mods on twitter at ccpamods, or email ccpamods at gmail.com.
Buy Stuff, Help Out:
grumpycakes's coworker made a Tarot deck that they're kickstarting, but they haven't yet reached goal; the deck is "A unique tarot deck that references not only symbols and keywords, but also; flowers, crystals and more with affirmations. [...] The Symbolic Tarot not only draws from the traditional tarot structure but also includes corresponding aspects including simple answers to questions, making each card a collectible piece of resourcefulness." You can read more and reblog here or join in the kickstarter here.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.
