sorry i'm actually insane about this. we all know buck is good at cooking, he's confident, he seems to enjoy it.
maybe they're at his place and tommy is just watching him, and there's music and something about the way he moves and talks, explaining what he's doing and why and making tommy taste everything - it's so much and so good and tommy can't believe he got so lucky.
and they'll eat together and clean up together and that's as far as tommy can restrain himself, he has to pin buck against something and kiss him hard, sliding his thigh between buck's legs and telling him how hot he is, how gorgeous he is. uses 'chef' like you might use 'sir' or 'daddy'
Tommy watching Chef Buck = Buck watching Mauy Tai or Pilot Instructor Tommy.
100% yes to all of this. Never apologize for sending me asks about domestic bucktommy. I have been WAITING for people to send me asks about them. I'm so insane about this hc too bestie.
Tommy using Chef the way Buck would use Daddy is >>>>>>>>>>
Especially cause I hc them as switches and have been trying to think of what Tommy would call Buck for AGES.
Not me opening a new Word file.
How you described it is how I pictured it going down too. Maybe they've already had a few glasses of wine so Tommy's a little less guarded about how he thinks about Buck. It's just enough wine to get him a little tipsy and the warm homey feeling in his stomach.
Tommy is trying so hard to focus on Buck's words as he continues giving Tommy a cooking lesson, but Buck is wearing a short sleeve shirt that's one size too small so his abs ripple against the apron tied tightly around his waist. It doesn't help he's wearing sweatpants that has LAFD on his ass in bold letters and KINARD embroidered on the thigh. Buck looks so good, and Tommy's brain can't comprehend the words coming out of his boyfriend's mouth because he's too distracted by Buck's large fingers against the knife. The way the tip of Buck's tongue slides against his lips as he licks them to help him concentrate on cutting things properly. The way Buck looks so confident and comfortable, so intently focused.
Tommy gets distracted a lot when he watches Buck cook. The focused expression on Buck's face, the way he expertly chops the veggies and perfectly sears the meat. How he wipes a bead of sweat dripping down his forehead with the back of his hand. The way he's so fucking competent when he cooks. Is competency a kink? Tommy needs to do research. Buck's muscles look so good in the kitchen lighting too, rippling and perfect and Tommy wants. God, Tommy wants. How did Tommy not notice how good Buck looked in the kitchen before? Is this how Buck sees him when they do flying lessons? No wonder he wants to jump Tommy's bones all the time. Tommy's crawling out of his skin watching his boyfriend work in the kitchen and Buck doesn't even seem to notice how hot and bothered he is.

Not My Monkey, Chapter 2
on Ao3
Link to Chapter 1
Dining with the Strawhats is just as you would expect.
The song the Reader hums and sings with Sanji is this ad: https://youtu.be/FbQt8pYUY6Q?si=qtAVuaC_wUggmSQd
~~~
You tore your gaze from Blue Maui to glance at the rest of the crew. Luffy was sitting and pounding his fists on the table, chanting for meat. Robin was sitting next to the android and chatting, with her hand on his oversized forearm. The green swordsman was slouching with his arms crossed next to a tinyâŚdeer. Who was talking to a giant skeleton with an afro. Alright. Nami sat next to you and Usopp, with Sanji coming from the kitchen with a serving platter. A strange group of people, but hey, you were dead so itâs not like you could talk.Â
Sanji served you first, even before the Captain, which surprised you. âA vegetarian meal for our dearest Reader,â Sanji said. He looked anxious and he was hovering over you. He clearly wanted you to try the food in front of him and give him a review. He gave you glazed carrots, a spring style salad, and a bean and mushroom stew served over rice.Â
He didnât need to be nervous, it all looked incredible. You werenât the main cook in your previous relationship, that had been mostly done by your partner. You were satisfied eating the same boring things over and over daily, which youâd done for the past few years. You picked up your fork and sampled the glazed carrots. It was unbelievable, the carrots practically melting on your tongue. Your taste buds were singing, you didnât think carrots could be so rich. You sampled each item heâd prepared while he flitted back and forth, serving the rest of the crew, starting with the women.Â
âSanji, this is outstanding! Iâve never eaten anything like this before, youâre such a talented chef.â The carrots, the stew, the salad, everything tasted like it had been made by a French chef. Sanji beamed at you.
âI apologize, we are running low on supplies right now. At the next island, Iâll buy more vegetables. Most of the crew prefers a more meat heavy diet.â This was him running low on supplies? You couldnât wait to see what he whipped up with a fully stocked kitchen.
âMEAT! MEAT! MEAT! MEAT!âŚâ Luffy continued to chant over Sanji speaking to you.
âLUFFY, SHUT UP! Iâm speaking to our lovely Reader,â Sanji sighed and went to fetch food for Luffy. Once the food was placed in front of him, Luffy was like a vacuum. You made a mental note to keep your hands and feet away from his mouth during meal time. He reminded you of that game, Kirby, where the little pink guy would literally inhale food. Or a dog with food aggression. Luffy was using both hands, double fisting the meat and eating as rapidly as humanly possible.Â
âWould you like to introduce our new Reader, Luffy?â Robin asked politely.
âOh yeah, this is Misty,â Luffy said while chewing, gesturing to you with one meat skewer. It took everything in you not to chide him for speaking with his mouth full. Who raised this kid?Â
âActually, her name is also Robin, but we are calling her Misty to avoid confusion,â Robin clarified. âShe is our new Reader, but she does not know any information about our world, including who we are. It's a fresh start for all of us, so letâs go around and introduce ourselves. Appropriately. â Robin gave a look to the android and skeleton, emphasizing the last word.
âSheâs obviously lying,â interjected the green haired swordsman.
âNo, Iâm not, I really -â you started to argue with him but were interrupted by Sanji, who already had his foot on the swordsman's shoulder.Â
âHow dare you accuse our newest, sweetest Mellorine of lying?!â He was in the green guyâs face on your behalf, it looked like they might fight again.Â
âThank you, Sanji, but I understand his hesitation. But I promise, I really donât know anything about this world. I havenât even been to the sea before. I guess thatâs one thing off my bucket list.â Well, youâd already kicked the bucket so you werenât sure that it counted.Â
âWhaddya mean? Never been to the sea?â asked Luffy, still chewing with his mouth open. You shrugged.
âI mean, Iâve been in lakes and rivers and pools and things like that. I always wanted to visit the ocean before I died. Where I lived, the ocean was really far away. It was always a little too expensive to go so I never did.â It made you sad to think you'd spend nearly your whole life working and for what? You didn't get to the Pacific, you didn't travel to Fiji, you didn't get to do a lot of things you'd wanted before you apparently died.
âWeâve heard about their world before, others have shared similar sentiments. To Zoroâs point, I do not believe she is lying. Iâve been monitoring her interactions and she does not seem to know any prior information.â Robin had been watching you? You hadnât seen her following you around. But at least she was corroborating that you werenât lying. So the green haired guy was Zoro. He still hadnât introduced himself.
âIâm Franky, the shipwright. Itâs SUUUUUPER nice to meet you.â He had exquisite blue hair shaped like a sailing ship. Maybe wild hair colors were natural in this world. You hoped so, you absolutely loved it.
âI like your hairstyle,â you complimented.Â
âThanks, sis,â Franky responded, making a finger gun and running his hand along the side of his hair. It was clearly a source of pride for him, as was only right for such a good style. Next, the skeleton put down his cup of tea.
âIâm Brook, the Soul King. I'm the musician on the crew and Iâd love to see -â Nami bonked him over the head before he could finish his sentence. Hard.
âDonât you dare! Robin just asked everyone to behave!â She was quick, that was for sure. And based on his reaction, fairly strong.
â-your panties,â he finished despite the bonk.Â
âNo. Donât ask again,â you replied. Ew. But also he was a nine foot tall skeleton, so his sense of decorum might have been off. He had kind of a Hendrix / Slash vibe going on, complete with afro. You really should commend whoever made this world, the hair here was fantastic.
The little deer put down his milk and said in a serious tone, âIâm Chopper, the shipâs doctor.â It would have been more impressive if he didnât have a milk mustache when he told you this. Talking skeleton, talking deer, rubber people, dead people, this ship was like a haunted house mixed with Disneyland. At least your life was ending with a bang. âI can help you if you have a headache from the timespace travel, itâs happened to a few of our readers.âÂ
After thanking Chopper, the last of the group, Blue Maui, introduced himself as well. âI am Jinbe, the shipâs helmsman. It is a pleasure to meet you,â he said, giving you a bow. Your heart and face warmed. You knew it didnât mean anything - it was basically the same introduction everyone else had given you as well. But coming from someone as good looking as Jinbe, you couldnât help it. What, were you 12 again?
âPleased to meet you as well,â you replied smiling. Luffy interrupted your very brief conversation with his mouth full.
âSo if youâre shipwrecked on an island, and there were only animals there,â Luffy began as you inwardly groaned, already knowing where this was going, âwould you eat one to survive?â
You laughed. âYou know whatâs funny? I die and come to this world only to be asked the same questions as the last one. I would. But itâs not something I worry about.â
âSo whoâs your favorite?â Luffy continued, beaming at you.
You werenât sure exactly what he was asking. âMy favorite what?â
âYour favorite Strawhat!â Luffy smiled, but you saw Sanji and Usopp tense slightly.
âLuffy, she doesnât know us. She doesn't have a favorite like our previous readers,â Robin interrupted her Captain. âI do not know if she is even aware we are the Strawhat Pirates.â
Luffy shoved more meat into his mouth before replying, âoh, right. Well, weâre the Strawhats. Cus of my hat. And your favorites probably gonna be me. Or Zoro. Or Nami. Thatâs who everyone says.â Luffy grinned widely. You didnât reply but it seemed kind of rude to pick favorites in front of the other crew members.Â
âYouâre not always everyoneâs favorite!â interjected Usopp, the conversation hitting a nerve.
âI am! Itâs my show! Iâm the antagonist-â Luffy yelled back.
âProtagonist,â corrected Robin, now sipping on some tea.
âThis isnât a show, it's just life!â continued Usopp. âYouâre not the main character, thatâs not how it works.â Luffy pouted but kept eating.
âLetâs get a round going for the new reader!â exclaimed Nami, trying to change the subject.Â
âBrilliant idea Nami-swan! Dearest Misty, what would you prefer to drink? We have some sake, wine, and ale. You are our guest, you choose first. â Sanji came to your side immediately, like a waiter on demand.
âOh, I donât drink,â you replied, âbut it doesnât bother me if anyone else does.â Zoro (who still hadnât introduced himself) snorted.
âWhat kinda life is that? No meat, no booze. Whatâs the fuckinâ point?â he scoffed.Â
You laughed lightly. âI would have said the same when I was 20. Just not my style anymore.âÂ
âSo go get the booze shitcook, she said we can drink,â Zoro turned to Sanji, already ignoring you. You could see Sanji puffing up for a fight already.
âIf sheâs not drinking, youâre not drinking either, you stupid mossbrain! You donât get shit anyway for insulting her!â They were already in each otherâs faces. No one else had paused their side conversations to listen or watch. You wondered how many times a day this happened. Zoro and Sanji went back and forth, though you noticed Zoro didnât stop eating his food and Sanji didnât put down his tray. Everyone else had returned to their side conversations, ignoring the two men completely. The crew seemed cohesive, like everyone was on good terms with each other. Even Zoro and Sanji's fighting wasn't disturbing the overall vibe of the dinner. It was loud, animated, chaotic, and reminded you of Sunday night dinners with your own family. You enjoyed it for a few minutes, eating your meal and watching the dynamics of the crew.Â
Everyone was wrapping up their meals and finishing their food. Usopp and Nami got up to leave, but left their dirty plates on the table. â Excuse me, take your plates to the sink. No oneâs coming behind to pick up after you,â you snapped at them. The room went silent as they stared at you. Oops. Having several bad roommates and coworkers over many years had left a few ingrained habits. âUh, sorry, didnât mean that. Just tell me where I can put my plate.â
âLeave it on the table, Twirlybrow cleans up,â replied Zoro.
âWhy? Didnât he cook the food?â you asked, confused. It was basically a sin where you grew up to leave your plate on the table, much less for the cook. Didnât they rotate the cleaning?
âSo? He likes it,â Zoro was being petulant, probably because of whatever he had going on with the cook.Â
âAgain, sorry, I didn't mean to overstep. Itâs just that where Iâm from, if you cook, you donât clean. Thatâs always how it is. But, not my circus,â you said, putting your hands up in apology. You didnât mean to offend, but the man had just cooked a multi course meal for eleven, plated and served it. Surely he didnât have to clean up everything by himself too. It felt unfair, but it wasnât your place to change the way things were.
âWhassat mean? Not my circus?â Luffy asked, finally full of food. His belly was stretched comically large, seemed like being made of rubber had its benefits.
âOh, itâs a common saying. âNot my circus, not my monkeys.â Meaning, it isnât my place to say anything. You know like, not my problem, not my business.â Luffy smiled at you.
âI am your monkey! Monkey D. Luffy! Thanks Sanji!â With that, Luffy got up and took his plate, putting it into the sink. Usopp and Nami did the same, bringing their plates with them after watching their Captain. One by one, the crew thanked Sanji and brought their plates to the sink until it was just you and Sanji left. You still had a lot of food on your plate and you werenât done eating yet.Â
âSorry, Iâve always been a slow eater, especially when Iâm in a group or talking with other people. I can finish this later.â You felt bad stopping him from beginning on the overwhelming amount of dishes he was going to have to do.Â
âNo, no. Please. Enjoy at your leisure mon cherie. Itâs nice to see someone who doesnât just shove everything down their throat.â Sanji was a little off, he wasnât saying anything cringy or chivalrous in your honor, just clearing off the table.
âSorry that I butted in. I didnât mean to disrupt the way things are here,â you offered.Â
âNo, I - I appreciate the sentiment.â Sanji said, back turned to you.
âI can help you clear the table if you wish, or wash some dishes. I canât fight and donât have super-powers like everyone else but I definitely know my way around dish soap,â you tried for a light hearted approach. âMy mom really drilled into us that whoever cooks doesnât clean. Itâs hard for me to watch you and not help, especially after you just cooked such an incredible meal.â Sanji smiled at you, but it didnât reach his eyes.Â
âIt is no burden on me, mon coeur. Please, eat. You are a guest on the ship, and a lady besides.â You dropped it as the chef began cleaning again, clearing the table of serving platters and pitchers, bringing them to be washed. You watched him as you ate, asking him about the preparation of the dishes you were eating. Once you got him talking about food, he dropped a lot of the chivalrous talk and spoke passionately about his love of food and drink. He was calm and patient, answering all your questions. It was obvious he excelled in his field, both from your empty plate and the amount of knowledge he had. Once you were done, you stacked your silverware, cup and plate and brought them to the sink. Sanji was elbow deep in dishes, and he would be for a while.Â
âCâmon, let me help you. This is gonna take you hours to do alone.âÂ
âLadies shouldnât have to life a finger -â Sanji began.
You cut him off. âI donât have to, I want to. It wouldâŚmake me happy?â You ended the sentence on a higher register. You figured that if he was really a chivalrous guy, he would take your wants and desires into consideration.Â
Sanji blinked up at you with his one visible eye, surprise registering before it was hidden. âIt would make you happy? But you only have precious little time left, you want to spend it washing dishes?â What was this guyâs deal? Did no one ever help him before? Youâd never fought so hard to wash dishes in your life.
âWell, I want to spend every day eating more of your scrumptious food. Which means that the utensils, pots, pans, bowls, everything has to be washed and cleaned, right? Kind of goes hand in hand.âÂ
âAlright, just this once mon mie. If it would make you happy.â
âIt would, you replied firmly. With that, he moved over, giving you some space at the sink. Youâd had a dishwasher at your house for years, but growing up everything was washed by hand. You had countless hours of experience doing the dishes, and there werenât any differences between your world and this one on how to scrub a dirty fork. You and the chef fell into an amicable silence, working side by side.
Something you hadnât anticipated was that there was no background noise on the ship. Sure, there were the sounds of the waves, of some sea birds, of the crew on board. But for the past few years youâd gotten used to always having something on to provide white noise - the television or YouTube mostly. You were used to passively listening to music or long form videos while you cooked, cleaned, did laundry, any basic repetitive task. So standing quietly next to the cook made your mind wander to music.Â
Obviously, you didnât have access to your music from home. You tried to think of songs to sing in your head to keep yourself busy. But, as it turned out, you didnât know the complete lyrics to all that many songs, even though you listened to music constantly. You could remember bits and pieces, or remember the tune, but there werenât that many songs you could sing from beginning to end. It seemed like the only songs you could remember the lyrics to were either Top 40s hit ending in 2012, songs from your childhood, or songs from the Disney movies your nieces liked. You were deep in your mind, trying to conjure up some songs to sing to, when the cook asked you what you were humming.
âBeg your pardon?â you hadnât realized you were humming out loud.
âOh, I was just wondering what song you were humming. I havenât heard that one before. Itâs always entertaining to learn new songs from Readers.â
âAh. Sorry. Um, itâs nothing, just a commercial jingle, Iâm sorry. Iâll stop,â you turned a little red.Â
âNo, no. I liked it a lot. Does it have lyrics?â
And so you taught Sanji the words to 877-CASHNOW. By the time the two of you were finishing the dishes, you were calling and responding to one another with gusto. It was quite fun, and you were glad the young chef was humoring you. When the last dish was dry, you patted him on the arm.Â
âThanks for indulging me, Sanji. You have quite a pleasant singing voice. Weâll do it again soon.â He didnât know youâd be helping him a lot on dish duty. Youâd tell him later, you had a feeling he was going to fight you on it. But you wanted to be useful, and it had actually been a fun way to pass the time.Â
âThe pleasure is all mine,  mon cherie. Iâm done much earlier than I usually am, for which I have you to thank.â Sanji lit up a cigarette. Youâd seen him smoking earlier, but not during dinner service. But you didnât know any chefs who didnât smoke, so you werenât going to give him grief over it.
âThank you for dinner, Sanji.â You patted his head like a little boy and left the galley. Outside the crew was relaxing and enjoying the cool evening air together.
âWhatâs a structured settlement?â Luffy yelled across the deck. You laughed.
âOh, sorry. I didnât know you could hear us. Iâll keep it down next time.â You hoped your singing wasnât too off key.
âWhy do you do that?â Luffy asked, walking towards you while picking his nose.
âSing? Iâve always liked it. Iâm not good by any means, but itâs fun -â
âNo, apologize all the time. Youâre always saying sorry but you donât do anything you need to apologize for.âÂ
You fidgeted, rubbing the tips of your fingers together. âOh, sorry, bad habit, I guess. Iâll try to stop.â Luffy flicked a booger onto the deck and sat down cross legged without washing his hands. Gross.
âYou donât need to be sorry for being here. We want you here.â Luffy said, his hands resting on his feet. For being a gross teenager, he was perceptive. You did worry a little about being a burden on the crew, even if it was only for a short while. You had always been a people pleaser, even when you were a child. It had gotten better for a little while in adulthood, but recently youâd fallen back into old habits. You didnât like relying on other people without providing anything in exchange. Maybe thatâs why you fought Sanji so hard on washing the dishes. It wasnât like it was a chore you loved doing, it was something you knew you could do. Youâd think about what Luffy said more.
âThank you, Luffy. Thatâs kind of you to say.â You almost patted his head too, but you remembered the boogers. Maybe after he bathed. You noticed Nami had come up, waiting for you to finish your conversation with Luffy.
âCome on, Iâll give you a tour of the ship,â she said. âWe can pop by the living quarters too, Robinâs set something up for you.â You agreed, following the orange haired woman.Â
âSo, the shipâs called the âGoing Sunny,â itâs like the âGoing Merryâ and â1,000 Sunnyâ mixed together. I donât know how Franky did it, but he took the Merry and combined it with the Sunny and this is what we ended up with. A Reader once gave us a good drawing of the 1,000 Sunny and Franky used the best parts of both ships." You didnât know what she was talking about but you nodded anyway. She took you around the ship, starting with the top deck and working your way down to the bottom. It was an incredible ship - there was a tangerine grove, the head of a ram on the keel, a huge fish tank, a spa level bathing area, even a library. You had never seen anything like it. Finishing with the crew quarters, Nami showed you where you would be sleeping. It was a small cot between her bed and Robinâs. Nothing fancy, but you hoped you wouldnât need to use it too much. You only had three weeks left to live, and you wanted to make the most of it.Â
I am always unsurprised but disappointed nonetheless at how frequently gaming nerds are boring as hell and resistant to new cool shit. A class based game offers a playtest class based around playing Heracles or Maui and there's nothing but griping about how they might as well have called it the "protagonist" class. Oh ffs, you whiny baby, your base level characters are high fantasy superheroes. Making Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman at Level 1 is stupidly easy. You can make a werewolf goblin gunslinger that happens to be a mean chef at Level 1. What a bunch of resistant to change, crybaby bullshit.
Author Chef Todd Mohr Published March 23, 2010 Word count 339 If you want to see how goats cheese is made, go to a goat farm. If you go to a goat farm, you might as well go to one in the âupcountryâ of Maui, Hawaii. My trip to the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm in Hawaii was a great education and a fun day. The Unshakeable Resilience of Lahaina, One Year After the Wildfires
New Post has been published on https://douxle.com/2024/08/14/the-unshakeable-resilience-of-lahaina-one-year-after-the-wildfires/
The Unshakeable Resilience of Lahaina, One Year After the Wildfires
At the elderâs call of âKani Ka PĹŤ,â the sound of the conch shell echoes across HanakaĘťĹʝŠBeach Park, summoning hundreds of surfers and outrigger canoe paddlers to the water. They paddle out, their silhouettes stark against the horizon, to honor the 102 lives lost to the Maui wildfires one year ago.
Onshore, the community gathers in shared purpose: groups that have emerged from the ashes lead lei-making workshops, screen print âLAHAINA STRONGâ onto clothing, and provide free childcare for families still rebuilding their lives. Faith leaders, hotel workers, and small business owners join hands in prayer and song, their voices mingling with the ocean breeze, a testament to the enduring spirit of Lahaina.
A year ago, wildfires devastated my beloved Maui. Today, on the anniversary of those tragic events, I reflect on the remarkable resilience and unity that has blossomed from the charred remains.
Read More: The Climate Crisis and Colonialism Destroyed My Maui Home. Where We Must Go From HereIn those first chaotic days, Maui rallied together, materializing over a dozen hubs of hope across beach parks, parking lots, and abandoned malls. These community resiliency hubs became lifelines, processing millions of food, clothing, and supply donations. World Central Kitchen flanked local culinary heroes like Sheldon Simeon and Mark Noguchi of Maui Chef Hui to provide thousands of hot meals to survivors at these hubs.
These hubs were beacons of hope while corporate landowners scurried for cover and FEMAâs aid trickled in too slowly. But the community knew it needed more durable support.Indigenous and immigrant elders offered their blessings to a new generation of community leadersâservice workers like PaĘťele Kiakona, expectant mothers like Jordan Rudias and Courtney Lazo, and immigrants caseworkers like Veronica Mendoza Jachowskiâwho, despite their grief and losses, were already out tending to their neighbors: from coordinating clothing drives, to serving as pro-bono translators and repairing rooftops. They, and many other young leaders, were thrust into leadership to shepherd our islandâs recovery.
They drew upon the enduring legacies of civil rights leaders, plantation labor organizers, the protectors of Mauna Kea, Ka LÄhui HawaiĘťi, and the Protect KahoĘťolawe ĘťOhana, embodying their spirit of steadfast hoĘťomana (a yearning for community power) and Aloha ĘťÄina (a profound patriotism and connection to our land).
Under the banner of âLahaina Strong,â volunteers carried out extensive needs assessment surveys, coordinated essential services like childcare and mental health support, and established networks of mutual aid. Having gained their communitiesâ trust and consolidated their influence, they then aimed for the throes of power.
Past disasters demonstrate that true recovery requires sustained effort at all levelsâregulatory, legislative, and communal. Although grassroots fundraising for Maui was significant, the staggering $5.5 billion needed for full recovery was met with governmental intervention. Recognizing this disparity, Lahaina mobilized against the colonial institutions that historically controlled our islandâs resources.
Their movement, embodied by hundreds in âLahaina Strongâ shirts testifying at public forums, gained unanimous Maui County Council support and directed state legislation.
The months-long occupation at KaĘťanapali Beach became a focal point of their movement, symbolizing their right to the land and their determination to reclaim our community spaces. Here, amidst the throngs of tourists, they set up camp to âfish for housing,â a nod to the cultural renaissance of the 1970âs when Native Hawaiian leaders secured constitutional rights to access public resources for traditional gathering practices.
This served not only as a media flashpoint to draw attention to the thousands of families still unhoused but also as an educational hub. Handcrafted Lahaina Strong ornaments were sold for $100 each, raising tens of thousands of dollars in direct aid over the holidays and increasing awareness among visitors, transforming their understanding of Mauiâs plight.
The results have shocked Hawaiiâs power structure. The Lahaina communityâs efforts have so far yielded over a billion dollars in government aid, as well as rectifying a wrongful dismissal of a Native Hawaiian government worker, and reclaiming tens of thousands of illegal vacation rentals by fire survivors and other local families.
Lahaina has pioneered a new model for disaster recovery that shifts focus from charity to change, setting a precedent as climate disasters become more frequent globally. This model has sparked one of the most impactful responses to disaster seen in modern times by not just aiding, but empowering impacted people to lead their own recovery efforts.
However, their work is far from finished. The utility that sparked the devastating blaze has no mandate to improve its infrastructure, and the invasive grasses that fueled the fires remain. Meanwhile, local streams, once lifeblood for Lahaina, are still controlled by colonial interests, and unchecked pollution continues to exacerbate global climate change.
Read More: Maui Wildfires Had Severe Health and Economic Consequences on Residents, Study FindsLahaina still requires federal investments to rebuild more resilient infrastructure and accelerate the transition to clean energy globally. Corporate polluters and land owners must be held accountable for environmental and social damages. More land, both locally and nationwide, should be designated for conservation and entrusted to its indigenous inhabitants. Their stewardship is crucial for fostering resilient communities and reversing biodiversity loss.But the momentum is on Mauiâs side. With a blank slate and newfound power, Lahaina is poised to reinvent itself as a world leader in nature-based, modern solutionsâlike community solar, regenerative farming, agro-energy, and ecotourismâand a new crop of leaders have emerged to steer us home.
As the ceremony concludes, a single 45-foot outrigger canoe glides back to shore, its paddlers moving in tune with the oceanâs currents. Guided by their ancestors and propelled by the power of Kanaloa, the guardian of the ocean, they embody the strength of generations past and present. Their paddles dip rhythmically into the waterââhut, hut, hoââin such perfect synchrony that the crowns of their heads remain steady on the horizon.
This unity, a rareness in todayâs polarized society, is what sustained the original inhabitants of Malu ĘťUlu o Lele, the ancient name of Lahaina Town, for centuries. It is the same unity that will heal this island and nourish its people to flourish anew.
