Film after film: Roter Himmel (dir. Christian Petzold, 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the most minor of Petzold's films, watchable, at times smart, at other times pandering in ways that I didn't expect of this filmmaker. I am slowly discovering him now, having watched Yella years ago and remembering loving it (though I don't recall anything specific about it). While I hugely enjoyed Barbara and Pheonix (all three star great Nina Hoss), Roter Himmel seemed like an effort to do something lighter, more contemporary, more pop, which, while there's nothing wrong with that, doesn't glue here into a potent story. There are moments, the narrative arch of Uibel's and Trebs' characters hooking up is tender, and Beer and Brandt deliver thoughtfully-acted, delicately-emoting characters. The issue lies with the protagonist, how he's written as an obnoxious, tortured, and extremely egocentric writer, who just cannot relax and struggles with the upcoming failure of his soon-to-be-published novel almost until the very end, despite people around him being sick and dying. The ending, in which he learns a lesson and writes his new novel about what happened throughout the film, and receives the blessing from his publisher, resounds particularly cynical, empty, or maybe simply bitter. It simply seems that the stakes of everyone and everything else are more important than his, and yet he is the protagonist. I hope to see Schubert in a role that will give him more nuance to play.

King of Stonks
Tumblr media
King of Stonks    [trailer]
Series inspired by real events in the financial world, centers on narcissism, megalomania and double standards.
While it's not essential, it's probably helpful if one is familiar with the broad outlines of the story this is based on, the spectacular Wirecard fraud. Sure, events are (slightly) exaggerated. But at the core a lot of things happened as they are shown here. The outside egos, the porn websites roots, Austrian secret service connections, fake Asian payment processor, financial market watchdogs protecting the criminals. To know that heightens the fun and is a reminder that despite seeming totally outlandish, it is indeed based on real events.
The two leads are ideally cast. My main complaint, as it's often the case, the mini-series has two episodes two many. The momentum gets lost, and there's one repetitive story circle too many. Though the ending is okay.
And as a reminder, while looking back everyone wonders how something this insane could've had happened. These frauds happen on a regular basis, the latest variation happened in the form of FTX. Multiple TV series, documentaries and movies are probably already in the making.

darya 👀👀👀👀 you maybe happen to have more women x death imagery like the one by Appolonia Saintclair? i can kneel and bow and do chores and i can cook decently if you care and i can kiss your knuckles tenderly btw … whatever it takes
Sophi honey, I am so sorry about the upcoming infodumping...... This is probably not quite what you asked at all, but alas. The art graduate jumped out. I don't have many sexy naked ladies riding Death for you, so here's a very brief overlook of Death and The Maiden depictions in art instead?
(i accept the cooking and kisses and return them tenfold)
For those who are wondering, this is referring to this beautiful piece by @apolloniasaintclairofficial, tasteful drawing of a naked woman sitting on Death's lap, while he holds a dagger. Beautiful and erotic.
I mentioned in the tags how much I loved seeing depictions of Death and women in art. Now, in art history, this is a recurring motif dubbed Death and The Maiden, often with erotic and sacrilegious undertones, and particularly prevalent amongst German artists. I did a quick google research on the origins of it, and according to the internet, was a common theme since the Middle ages, originating from the Danse Macabre allegories, with a significant revival in the Romantic Period. (wikipage here)
The allegorical motif of ‘Death and the Maiden’ (a young girl, often in a passionate embrace with a skeletal figure) had been popular with German artists and musicians since the Middle Ages, and its reminder of transience and mortality was especially appropriate during this period of foreboding (referring to WWI). [taken from the Tate's entry about Meidner's Death and the Maiden]
Here are some very interesting articles about Death and The Maiden throughout history - Paintings for our time: Death and the Maiden and Death and the Maiden. From Schubert to Schiele. I read them both while researching this, super informative without being overtly verbose. Great selection of art pieces.
Tumblr media
Death and the woman, by E. Munch
I'm very fond of this drawing by Munch (huge fan of his lol). Every time I see Death and Women embracing each other so tenderly, my heart breaks for a second. There's just something that is equal parts sensual and tender, something that transcends the inherent sexual appeal of erotic art, something poetic and poignant. Oof.
Here are some selected pieces by K. Kollwitz - X X, and this beautiful piece by E. Schiele (a student of Klimt, you can see the similarities in style).
Also, the revival during the Romantic period was in great part due to Schubert's Der Tod und das Mädchen (Death and the maiden), a lied he wrote based on this beautiful poem by Matthias Claudius, which would later be used in his piece String Quartet No. 14, also known and Death and the maiden. The poem:
The Maiden: Pass me by! Oh, pass me by! Go, fierce man of bones! I am still young! Go, dear, And do not touch me. And do not touch me. Death: Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender form! I am a friend, and come not to punish. Be of good cheer! I am not fierce, Softly shall you sleep in my arms!
Also! I found this super interesting book (it's a free english pdf) called Erotism - Death and Sensuality (og. L'Erotisme) by Georges Bataille, which explores in depth the relationship between erotica, death, taboo, sacrifice, Christianity, and many other themes. I haven't read it but this does look incredibly interesting so. I know what I'll be reading next.
I could go on and on and on about WHY I am so fascinated by these themes, but that would result in yet another big-ass post, and I think this is enough info for one day lol.
(before I forget, I just want to point out that this directly overlaps with depictions of Hades and Persephone, seeing as Hades was often times associated with Death itself - even though Thanatos is the one who embodies the Reaper figure in the Greek myths. So I'm sure you'll find some other tasteful pieces if you go down that route).

Turkkila & Versluis: “It's Good That The Age Limits Are Being Raised”
Tumblr media
Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis have been training intensively for the European Championships taking place soon. The duo's cooperation started on April Fool's Day 2016, but it wasn't a joke. In fact, their partnership has progressed steadily to this day.
Long before they switched to ice dance, Juulia and Matthias already skated on the same ice at Myllypuro rink years ago. When they were ten years old, they even had the same coach but were placed in different groups.
“Matthias was in a better group,” Juulia says with a laugh.
Tumblr media
Matthias’ Dutch father and Finnish mother studied and worked in Switzerland during the early 1990s. The family moved to Finland when Matthias was a few months old. Matthias says that he tried different sports when he was younger, but ended up with figure skating. Aside from sports, he also learned how to play the guitar, a hobby that has remained to this day.
“The musicality is helpful because Matthias mixes and builds our music,” Juulia shares.
Behind the couple is a wider group of people who participate in the planning of new programs. When it comes to music, the athletes have the final say.
“Our coach (Maurizio Margaglio) wants the initiative to come from us because then he knows we really like the music,” Matthias explains.
This season, they skate their free program to the music of Schubert, which was Juulia’s idea.
Tumblr media
“After last season, we only had a week to prepare for new programs so we had to come up with music quickly,” Juulia shares.
“Creating the right sound from long pieces of classical music is not easy,” Matthias says about his “side job.”
Some skaters cut a raw version of the pieces, from which a professional works on creating the final music, but Matthias handles the process from start to finish.
The music has to fit the choreography, so it is refined throughout the season. When the coach's eye detects a section where more seconds are needed, the music is altered.
After competitions, the coach asks the judges how his skating pair can improve their program even more. Scores and comments are then scrutinized.
Tumblr media
This past summer, Juulia and Matthias were not able to train together as much as usual, because Matthias was doing his military service at the Santahamina sports school. In practice, he had to smile broadly at every turn but in the barracks, he had to control the smile.
In the fall, the couple used breaks between competitions to "finish" the programs and based on the results, they have succeeded in their goal. The Finns won bronze in Grand Prix Espoo with a personal best score.
When we followed the pair's ice training in Pirkkola hall, coach Margaglio paid attention to the skaters' gaze and hand movements.
“Our coaches sharpen the overall presentation of the program. We have to enjoy our performance and it has to show all the way to the stands,” Juulia says.
Margaglio wants the Finnish couple to forget their modesty.
“You don't slide onto the ice apologizing, but flaunting self-confidence like opera stars! Juulia, be like a diva,” Maurizio instructs.
Tumblr media
Juulia and Matthias have been skating since they were kids so they know the sport's coaching culture. Choosing to continue skating for 20 years, they did not encounter horror experiences with coaches.
“There are no traumas from single skating,” Juulia shares.
Having a wealth of experience, they both have great insight into the age limits of elite skating. There have been 15-year-old participants and medalists in prestigious competitions. For the Finnish couple, this is not a healthy phenomenon.
Tumblr media
“It's good that the age limits are being raised. 17 to 18 years would be a good age to enter value competitions,” Juulia and Matthias agree.
A person develops at a rapid pace during adolescence.
“A 15-year-old's body is different from an adult's,” Matthias describes.
Juulia emphasizes the mental aspect and maturity.
“When I was competing in the senior level at 16 years old, I was not thinking like an adult,” she shares.

Schubert, Winterreise, Matthias Loibner / Nataša Mirković De Ro, 2010
Hurdy-gurdy Winterreise, because Winterreise mentions a hurdy-gurdy. This logic pleases me.
One thing I find irritating about this record is that it is not recorded like a normal Lieder album. You can really hear it in the voice, it has some strange echo to it that I otherwise only know from medieval / renaissance style music. Maybe they recorded it in a church? Or maybe it's due to the equipment somehow? I don't know. But it bothers me.
But I sure enjoy abnormal sounds, and the texture of the hurdy-gurdy music and the ghostly soprano voice here has its own feel to it. I like it. Expressive.
In terms of emotion it's not really the typical despair, it's more resigned and reflective. I think that's common for female Winterreise singers, which makes sense given how the text treats women.
How I found it: article about weird Winterreisen in VAN magazine.

Turkkila/Versluis - Grand Prix Espoo 22 - Free Dance - FIN
Elements:
OFS 3+2 (very solid) | SLL 3 (?? This was beautiful) Twizzles 3+3 (just some slight bobbles for both of them on the exits of the last 2 Twizzles) | Choreo Jump + 2.28| StaLi 4+ RoLi 4(tv but stunning, +4 goe) | MiSt 2+3 (and close to 3+3!!) | Spin 3 | ChSt +2.21 (wish it was longer)| Choreo Lift +3.15 (really lovely!!)
Program: Four Impromptus , Piano Sonata 20 (Schubert)
I appreciate how understated and soft this program is and how well it works with their individual style. This feels like a genuine and unforced version of what Sinitsina/Katsalapov tried and failed to do year after year. They have such a refreshing quality to their skating that I just love <3
I would give them honestly an 8.75 in Composition because this was great. (Edit after looking at the protocols, they got an 8.64! Which is .5 higher than any other category of theirs. I feel vindicated and I’m glad the judges agree 😤)
I know I said it last event, but I love this dress and color on Juulia 💜 and I don’t think I noticed the details in Matthias’ tunic before, but I do really enjoy the cut and how the navy compliments Juulia
Also, what a great showing Finland had in Mens and Ice Dance 💜 (and both Jenni and Janna had one STUNNING program) they should be so proud as a host nation!! 🥺
Score: 116.73 (!!!), 191.79 into 1st — AND their first Grand Prix medal!! 🥉 which is Finland’s first in Ice Dance, and the first GP medal since 2012!
what a way to cap off The Grand Prix of Figure Skating Espoo 💜 🇫🇮 💜

Some Honest GP Espoo Thoughts
Women:
Mana was the star of the event for me. not sold on the sp (the stsq was great), but the free was stunning! It really showed her maturity in performance and her commitment to the music. And her skating skills!! imo she has the best edge quality of the women’s event. The coaching change seems to be paying off. She looks happier and I think she will continue to develop artistically with Mihoko.
Mai’s sp was great. the fs… not so much. One glaring issue I noticed was the amount of “hunching down” movements in the stsq. Mai doesn’t have the best upper body control so it just looks… bad. I blame David Wilson for this cuz how to you choreograph both programs and have such different results
Ice dance:
Did I tear up watching Piper and Paul’s Evita? Yes. Please dont judge. I have so many things to say about these two but the tldr is I am happy they are still competing and showing us they have more to offer. I really love the circular step with little touches reminiscent of the Ravensburger Waltz. And a mini lift during the step that doesn’t feel forced and matches the music! love the little changes they made since SCI, but I wish they do something with the straight line lift, right now it doesn’t match the crescendo of the music as well as it should. The RoLi is wonderful tho.
Kaitlin and Jean-Luc’s Oft are exquisite as always. Perhaps it’s my nitpick, but I felt like they’ve gone with stylistically similar fd for a long time now. And I prefer last season’s Chopin over this.
Juulia and Matthias had my favorite combo lift of the event. That RoLi is absolutely beautiful. So many intricate changes of position, each on the accent of the music. They are another team that is stylistically limited, but Schubert is a great choice.
Natalie and Filip my loves!! Their sheer power and speed are SO impressive I am in awe. This climate change fd has grown on me. I think they made the right decision reducing the number of voiceovers. Some very innovative and intricate movements. Still need some polishing but gosh I love watching them skate. (@benoit richaud, this is how you do a climate change themed program)
Men
My only thought on the mens is that I like both the Selevko brothers but neither of them have been performing well and now there’s a third candidate fighting for that one spot and I am concerned.
Bonus of me dragging Benoit richaud for the 20395135th time
You can really tell when a program is choreographed by Benoit because it’s just so awkward and straight up ugly at times. He really forces a skater to adapt to his choreography. I think Shae-lynn has the same problem sometimes, but her clients are often times good performers already so it isn’t noticeable. But Benoit choreographs for many young skaters still trying to find their footing artistically and does nothing but accentuate their flaws. Sometimes it feels like he’s more concerned with being perceived as “edgy” and “woke” than making enjoyable programs. (I still can’t get over his insistence on continuity between the short and the free like ????? Why.)

Matthias Döpfner Matthias Platzeck Olaf Scholz Ulrich Meier Klara Geywitz.
