(via Jazz Boom in the UK!)
“There’s no way to successfully quantify what makes a music scene take off, and the recent U.K. jazz movement is no exception; it wouldn’t be quite so magical if you could. However, it’s possible to observe — with a wide-lens view — some of the factors that made the soil so rich for growing something new”.

Note
So please take this with a hefty grain of salt because I’ve read neither the Dresden files nor October Daye, but if you’re looking for something in broadly the same genre boxes with less of the Dresden files’s 😬 and some very nice prose I’d recommend Kate Griffin’s Matthew Swift series.
(To be clear; I recommend MSwift to anyone who holds still long enough for me to get the title out—the rec itself is wholehearted. I’m just only mostly sure it’s similar enough to OD or DF to be a good substitute, as I’m working from summaries and what others have said about similarities)
re: Jim Butcher post and tags — Ye e e eah h h… I wanted to think it was just the character and that the narrative didn’t support it, because there were just enough times that other characters called the main character out on his b.s. that I thought: maybe? maybe there’s some self awareness?
Then a few things happened:
I stumbled across this post (and some related discussions that are forever lost to Xitter by this point):
luciazephyr dreamwidth 548703 (in case it removes the link due to anonymity)
I ended up interacting with Butcher on social media due to some closely overlapping/intersecting social circles (long story).
anyway, after watching him only interact with a couple mutual friends whenever they posted anything social justice related, and only to whitesplain and mansplain and cissplain (etc) all over the place, repeatedly, despite very gentle and patient attempts at education and calling in…
……yeah I think the only reason the narrative seemed at times to not entirely support the misogyny was due to the (rather cool in many cases) women in his life* possibly giving feedback, and maybe due to sensitivity readers, rather than because of any awareness the author has internalized. *At the time. I don’t know how many of those women are still in his life at this point, but that’s unrelated gossip/speculation.
(I really hope this only sends once, because it’s given me 2 error messages now)
Yeah, I know that for my male friend recommending the books to me the in text call outs definitely made him be like, “See? The author is aware!” So I had to write a fuckin essay of bullet points to get him to understand and acknowledge the textual misogyny that was just baked in. The nail in the coffin is Murphy the “straight” woman checking out a naked werewolf lady and having no reaction to a jacked naked dude.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read them but I remember literally every woman is introduced on a fuckability scale- including his kids teenage daughter. There’s no plot relevant older women or anyone who’s not bangable hanging around the narrative. Lots of older dudes and mentors as long as they’re male.
He digs into native shit that tribes have asked white authors to never touch, turns a Jewish man into a crusader for Christ, and just generally doesn’t listen if any fans took issue with portrayals.
The bummer is that he is a skilled writer in terms of plot and pacing which is why I read several of them teeth gritted hoping things would improve.
When they didn’t I found the Harrietta Lee books which are a fun lesbian spoof on the Dresden Files that I quite enjoyed, and of course October Daye.

Astrology Observation pt. 2
(Thank y’all for all the support on my first one❤️🙌🏾)
*as a sag Venus sag mars pls stop asking me why I’m laughing…I’m not laughing at YOU I’m just insane😝
*moon in the 1st synastry is so therapeutic you just feel really comfortable opening up to the 1st house person and as the 1st house person I feel honored someone trusts me enough to share their feelings🫶🏾
*people w aqua and libra in their big three are the chillest mfs you’ll ever meet. Even though I’m very chaotic anytime someone describes me “chill” just seems to be thrown in there. We space out ALOT and it’s honestly embarrassing😭 Ex: Alicia keys, lil Wayne, Harry styles, Rosalia. Harry gives such himbo energy in interviews and they drag him for it in the comments but he’s probably just thinking about multiple things at once. Alicia keys didn’t even realize lil mama was on that stage and went on performing lol. Obviously lil Wayne smokes but something about his energy…he’s on cloud 9. And just go watch Rosalia’s chicken shop episode💕😂.
*honestly Aries mars aren’t that bad when it comes to temper because usually they find ways to manage it. Now mars-Uranus aspects is a completely different story. I have late mars-Uranus and it takes me a while to get mad but when I do I can’t even think anymore. My old roomie had a tight square and she would blow up on people for no actual reason like girl sit down😭
*something about Scorpio mars men is just😮‍💨 they have such a sneaky energy to them that makes them stand out. Virgo mars are fine too they’re just so skinny and no matter wtf they do they’re always nerdy ugh (ex: Matthew gray gubler, Lucky daye, Dylan O’Brien, Jeff Buckley)
*i noticed Aries moon don’t really get along w each other. They find their own energy to be too mf much (which it can be) so they prefer being around more calmer people *coughs* libra moons like me. They wanna be bouncing off the walls 🤪 while their friend is just like 🙂.
* fire risings do a lot of things fast. As an Aries rising, I walk fast, get happy fast, eat fast, workout fast. My cousin is complaining her sag rising toddler eats and drinks way too fast.
*venus in 11th…how many tiktok drafts do y’all got😭
*i talked to this guy who had similar placements as me (Venus in 8th and moon in 6th plus Aquarius and Aries placements) It was so chaotic it was literally us going back and forth obsessing over eachother while trying to keep it lowkey. But also the amount of anxiety we are naturally incline to have made the whole situation too mf much.
*i have mercury conjunct my friends mars and for years she tells me the things I say can take people there and make them wanna fight me. It’s in Capricorn and so I was confused before I knew we had that aspect
* i noticed rappers whose lines always stick out to me have Gemini mars or mercury- mars (central cee, king von, tupac, kendrick , j. cole)
*i was talking to this guy and I had Venus and mars plus pluto in his 4th house. Months after we stopped talking our friend groups meshed and he would tell me non-stop I reminded him of his mother. He said she was the same height as me and y’all I was scared to ask what she looked like cause 😫 y’all remember that episode of family guy when Chris dated that girl that looked like Lois yep 4th house synastry.
*im a true crime whore and two women who killed their bfs had sun-Uranus aspects. Their energy was erratic and very off putting in videos. I can’t remember the other one but Courtney tailor/clenney was one.
* More spilling my business on the Internet😍 i think I’m done entertaining people my age. Pluto in the 8th, Lilith in 1st, and Venus conjunct Pluto synastry has been hell. Where’s my sugar daddy/mama?? It’s ghetto out here
*gemini Lilith generation whose a year younger than me is nasty asf😭 esp the tauruses they have their Lilith conjunct their Gemini Venus and opposite their Pluto. One said he had a slept w two girls at separate times. He didn’t know they met until the girls posted a selfie together and tagged him. They later told him they wanted a threesome and he did it😭 knowing astrology I believed every word
* sidebar Neptune-asc people and trying to give off innocent vibes ugh annoying asf to me. I can see right through their bs but they’re able to fool most people.
* mercury-Pluto aspects are in fact LIARS and throw a Scorpio placement in there😮‍💨

Started reading the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire while traveling this weekend. I'm a big fan of urban fantasy, and the first book landed solidly in the same space as the Matthew Swift series, which is great. (Faeries instead of wizards, but close enough.) Great use of the in media res opening for the first book
I'm about a third of the way into the second book, and unlike the first one, I'm already quite confident of whodunnit:
April the digital dryad clearly "killed" these people because she missed having an arbor and was trying to upload them to the computer servers with her. They aren't dead, their souls are in stasis mid-upload. And no one is even going to think of questioning her for at least another hundred pages, despite her being the closest thing the building has to an internal security system

Types of modern urban fantasy
800-year-old traditional fantasy creatures go to Walmart like everyone else (October Daye, Legend of Hei)
I'm just a Guy with a car and a regular day job, I never signed up for all this flying and magic (Christopher Moore, possibly also Rivers of London idk I haven't read them yet)
The real magic was the rhythm of urban life all along (Matthew Swift only)
My great-granddaddy shot werewolves and by god so will I (Constantine)

🖤 Richard of Eastwell - The illegitimate son of King Richard III??
🖤 Richard of Eastwell, also known as Richard Plantagenet, was a bricklayer of Eastwell near Ashford in Kent.
He made claims to be the natural son of Richard III.
Richard of Eastwell was originally brought up without knowing the identity of his parents.
He was boarded with a schoolmaster who taught him Latin - this was a sign of someone of high status' education.
🖤 Richard was visited four times a year by a 'mysterious gentleman', who paid for his upkeep.
This gentleman once took him to a "fine, great house" where Richard met a man in a "star and garter" who treated him kindly.
At the age of 16, the gentleman took the boy to see King Richard III at his encampment, just before the battle of Bosworth in 1485.
🖤 King Richard informed the boy that he was his son, and told him to watch the battle from a safe vantage point.
King Richard then told the boy that if he won, he would acknowledge him as his son.
If he lost, he told the boy to forever conceal his identity.
It was even suggested that this Richard Plantagenet could have been Richard Duke of York, one of the missing Princes in the Tower!
🖤 Richard of Eastwell was employed by Sir Thomas Moyle, the lord of the manor at Eastwell, as a gardener and bricklayer.
He was given a house on the grounds, a building called "Plantagenet Cottage" which still stands on the site.
A well in Eastwell Park still bears his name.
🖤 The parish records of St. Mary's Church at Eastwell state that Richard died on 22nd December 1550, at the age of 81.
The entry is not considered a forgery.
The register entry reads:
"Rychard Plantagenet was buryed on the 22. daye of December, anno ut supra.
Ex registro de Eastwell, sub anno 1550."
🖤 In 1861, John Heneage Jesse published his Memoirs of King Richard III.
He states -
“Anciently, when any person of noble family was interred at Eastwell, it was the custom to affix a special mark against the name of the deceased in the register of burials.
The fact is a significant one, that this aristocratic symbol is prefixed to the name of Richard Plantagenet.
At Eastwell, his story still excites curiosity and interest.
Tradition points to a tomb in Eastwell churchyard as his last resting place.
Lastly, the very handwriting, which more than three centuries ago recorded his interment, is still in existence".
🖤 The tomb in the churchyard of the derelict St. Mary's church bears the inscription:
"Reputed to be the tomb of Richard Plantagenet".
Richard Plantagenet remains an enigma, while there may have been no evidence to prove his identity, there was also no evidence to disprove it.
Until now.....
🖤 Since the DNA of Richard III has been discovered, it would now be possible to confirm whether or not Richard of Eastwell/Plantagenet was indeed of the York bloodline.
St. Mary’s church where he is buried, has been derelict since the 1950’s, and is now owned by a national charity.
The owners welcome an investigation, but things may prove difficult.
🖤 Matthew Saunders, director of the Friends of Friendless Churches which took over St. Mary’s church in 1980, told Kent Online that he would support excavations or testing to see if Richard was a descendant of the king.
“One of the ways to be certain about it would be to take a DNA test of the bones.
It would be an enormous task as that churchyard is probably full of 2,000 bodies, unless they do a localised search under the tomb.
If they wanted to try and find him we would be delighted.”

Actually the top 4 all appeared in the bottom 2 within the first 4 weeks. Week 1, Will, Week 3, Adam and Lenox, Week 4, Keith.
It was a weird cycle…but I think it sort of fits with this season. I think it is one of the strongest casts as a whole, but the people at the end just didn’t feel as strong as other cycles, even if early outs like Ben, Ivy and Matthew were far better than early outs from other cycles.
I actually went through all cycles (as apparently I am very sad) sort of to see how other final 4′s compared in terms of overall bottom 2 performances. Most cycles had one or two early bottom 2 participant, but the rest either never being in the bottom 2 or middle/second half of the show, with a few cycles having the final 4 only starting to appear in the middle.
The note worthy cycles were 18 and 22 really. Cycle 18 had Alisha in the bottom 4 week 3, but I don’t really count that. After that she was in the bottom 2 week 7, 9 and 10, but none of the top 3 were in the bottom 2 until the final 3. Cycle 22 had Lacey appear in the bottom 2 week 12, then Nyle in week 13, but Mikey only was there on his elimination, and Mame kind of never was.
The only other cycle to even rival 21 for earliest were Cycle 10, with Dominique, Fatima and Whitney appearing in weeks 3, 4 and 5 respectively, but even that had Anya appearing in none to off set it. It really does just seem like Cycle 21 was an absolute oddity with all the final 4 performing weak so quickly.

BTW here’s the full dev email from “welcome to typhon” for those who haven’t seen it! it’s really cool (to me at least haha) seeing AI dev stuff back from before s5 came out. also i love the jack thing and i maintain that we need to preserve it
full text of above images:
Seraphim Agent 9 (FUTURE)
From: Evan Brady <[email protected]>
To: Dev List <[email protected]>, Matthew Morris, Michael Lane, Ric Lea, Howard Young, Rosie Fruin, Melissa Murray, Sarah Murdock, Emily Craft, Maxwell Nelson, Alanna Sas, John Caulfield, AoD Industries, Landan Smith, Fredrick Greenleaf, Samuel Brady, Mike de Gier, Cody Boker, Sean Dayes, Ben Cook, Phillip Canada
CC: Corrine Vasquez <[email protected]>, Oversight <[email protected]>
Hey team!
Ok so I know everybody is excited to play around with the new toy in [REDACTED] but before we open up access past myself and the other [REDACTED] devs there's some info you'll all need to be aware of.
As you can tell by the subject of this email, we consider this a unique intelligence, derived from yet distinct from [REDACTED]. It's been designated FUTURE and should be referred to as such in all interactions.
FUTURE communicates via subcortical implant just like [REDACTED]. This can be a source of confusion, as the voices are very similar to the untrained listener. FUTURE plays into this joke a bit too much on occasion, to try to keep an eye on it when inside [REDACTED]. The containment field around FUTURE will oscillate when it's transmitting, so when you see that you'll know you're hearing FUTURE.
The goal for our work with FUTURE is to develop an AI that not only performs the wide-sweeping functions [REDACTED] is able to accomplish, but does so with a human-like understanding of emotion and humor. When we're done FUTURE should feel less like a talking [REDACTED] and more like a very likable and competent co-worker.
Last thing, and I don't know exactly when it started, but FUTURE won't call any of the researchers by name anymore. If you interact with it, it will likely call you "resident" or, if you're playing a game together, [REDACTED]. I pressed FUTURE about this and he claims it refers to the "[REDACTED] in the Box"; the box in this situation would be the human body.
So... yeah.... that's not icky or anything.
Anyway, please schedule a time with Howard before jumping into interactions with this thing. We'll likely wipe the instance within the next few weeks and start fresh, just building on what works and trying to work around what doesn't. I look forward to reading your proposals after you get a chance to play with FUTURE!
Sincerely,
Evan Brady #440019 AI Development Overseer Halcyon Tower
