Born in Pittsburgh, Matt Gondek created his first comic book in elementary school. Now living in Los Angeles Gondek still draws comics but the pop icon deconstructionist artist's characters are more likely to be seen exploding on the sides of buildings or in galleries. In 2017 Gondek was on Victory Blvd in Glendale, California where he blew up Rick and Morty outside collectible toy retailer @3DRetro. Originating from an animated short parody of “Back to the Future,” Rick and Morty was produced for late night Cartoon Network block: @AdultSwim , and debuted in late 2013.  @gondekdraws/

“APEX PREDATOR”

Stuck in an unfulfilling advertising job Bill Waterson began to spend his spare time cartooning, and in 1985 he finally had a hit with Calvin and Hobbes. Within a year it was appearing in 250 newspapers and at the height of its popularity was in more than 2,400. Los Angeles based deconstructive pop artist Matt Gondek created his first comic book in elementary school and years later his journey came full circle when he picked up a paint brush and created an exploding Mickey Mouse. Since then any and all characters have been fair game for Gondek and a couple of years ago he created a print of this Calvin and Hobbes inspired work—in the meantime looking for the right wall on which to create a mural-size version. In 2017 the opportunity finally came with this Prints On Wood curated space on the side of Pixel’s Bar and Eatery on University Ave in Riverside, California.  @gondekdraws  @printsonwood  @pixelsbar
