Freakonomics Radio Takes to the Skies
The airline industry was struck by lightning by the COVID pandemic. As it struggles to return to normal operations, the industry has been buffeted by self-inflicted wounds (Hello, that's you Southwest), a careless and dangerous plan to cut labor costs to recoup profits, and flight schedules that are more fantasy than The Wizard of Oz.
This industry meltdown is fertile ground for the curious minds at Freakonomics. For them, the questions are easy, while getting coherent answers from the airlines is much tougher.
Freakonomics Radio has just released the first two episodes in the new series "Freakonomics Radio Takes to the Skies."
Across three episodes, the popular podcast will investigate all aspects of airline economics by speaking with CEOs from Delta to Air New Zealand, economists, workers from pilots to meteorologists to flight attendant trainers to aircraft load agents, and – of course – passengers.
Here's a summary of the first two episodes. You can listen to both at freakonomics.com(there are full transcripts there too) or wherever you get podcasts.
Tumblr media
Episode 1: "Air Travel Is a Miracle. Why Do We Hate It?"
It’s an unnatural activity that has become normal. You’re stuck in a metal tube with hundreds of strangers (and strange smells), defying gravity and racing through the sky. But oh, the places you’ll go! We visit the world’s busiest airport to see how it all comes together.
Episode 1 guests:
Greg Foran, C.E.O. of Air New Zealand.
Troy Jaster, Freakonomics Radio listener and airline passenger.
David Neeleman, founder and C.E.O. of Breeze Airways.
Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants.
Marcus Powell, aircraft load agent.
Meg Rosson, Freakonomics Radio listener and airline passenger.
Matt Sparks, senior vice president of Airport Operations for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta.
Antonia White, customer service representative for Delta Air Lines.
Eric Zeugschmidt, general manager of Brand Reputation and Media Relations at Delta Air Lines.
Episode 2: "Why Is Flying Safer Than Driving?"
Thanks to decades of work by airlines and regulators, plane crashes are nearly a thing of the past. Can we do the same for cars?
Episode 2 guests:
Ed Bastian, C.E.O. of Delta Air Lines.
Gregg Brandner, general manager at Delta Airlines’ Operations and Customer Center.
Pepper Deroy, singer and bassist for the band Hurricane Fall.
Conor McGill, Freakonomics Radio listener and airline passenger.
Branden Morrell, Freakonomics Radio listener and airline passenger.
Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants and flight attendant with United Airlines.
Billy Nolen, acting administrator for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Katie Truett, flight attendant trainer for Delta Air Lines.
Adam Uhan, pilot for a major U.S. airline and former U.S. Air Force pilot.
Warren Weston, lead meteorologist at Delta Air Lines.
Luke Wheeldon, guitarist for the band Hurricane Fall.
The third and final episode of "Freakonomics Radio Takes to the Skies" will be released next Thursday, March 9.

Note
What do you think is making the dark knight trilogy a much more memorable film than the marvel films? Even after all these years, people still look back and praise those films.
The story: Every film has a story, but only few have a soul.  No comic or superhero film had really been as grounded in the real world as much as what The Dark Knight trilogy did.  The films was like a crime drama with interconnected numerous different action movie sub-genres; thrillers, crime films, heist movies, psychological thrillers, detective stories, and still somehow managed to respect them all and take their central plot conceits seriously and above all else, it’s main character Batman himself.  Batman works together with the police and DA Harvey Dent but it doesn’t feel like comic book schlock or character fan-service; it feels like a gritty cop story.  So much so that audiences were shocked when Dent became his villainous disfigured alter-ego.  You wouldn’t expect an important character from Lethal Weapon or Die Hard to become partially disfigured and lose his mind and wreak havoc on an already terrorized city.
This is why I’m super stoked about Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman because he promised a neo-noir detective story.  Batman’s detective skills are generally unexplored or neglected in live action films so I really appreciate that the new  Batman movie is going the Sherlock Holmes route.
Marvel is more about “stand back and be in awe of my action sequences''. That’s not a way to tell a story for contemporary pop culture heroes.
The legacy: So back to Nolen’s Dark Knight, the script and dialogue were quite human and the trilogy showed the personal side of Bruce Wayne without idolising him as a God while turning Batman’s ideals into a legend.  Nolen does not try to portray moments or creates scenes to show that Batman “demands” respect, rather, Bruce’s actions and his choices throughout the series evokes respect from us.
The villians: Now we get to a point which typically makes or breaks a good action flick; the villain.  Just like Batman, the villains of the trilogy are also mortal human beings and their fight with Batman is philosophical.  The first villain  Ras Al Ghul was actually Bruce's mentor and when we got a look into the League of Shadows, we saw how easy it is to be corrupt.
The Joker is the ultimate antagonist for Batman who believes that deep down everyone is good and innocent and Joker asks what's the meaning of innocence if it can be bought, it can be changed and even challenged.  Joker believes that even those people who are the best can be brought down to being ugly.  Most of the time Joker just gives choices to people and lets them decide.
Bane was the weakest villain because his and Talia’s motivations are not fleshed out enough to really discuss, and they don’t really make you think.   Nonetheless Bane was a good character because of his spiritual connection with Talia.  When Talia was born in prison, Bane found his purpose and a reason to live by protecting her. Bane never actually escaped from prison because he spiritually has not been able to rise above it and is still in prison.  Talia is a constant representation of hope out of darkness for Bane.  As long as he helps her, he is spiritually outside of that prison.
Tumblr media
Special effects:  The Dark Knight trilogy was shot on old-school production equipment with minimal CGI, yet it conveyed a lot in the shortest scenes. There’s depth in each and every scene in the films, something that I find missing from a lot of films in the MCU. There’s tons of CGI for a simple plot in the MCU and DCEU.

Announcing Winners WGA Awards 2019: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?,’ ‘Eighth Grade’
Tumblr media
In a pair of upsets, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has won the Writers Guild of America’s adapted screenplay award for Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty and Bo Burnham has won the original screenplay award for “Eighth Grade.”
The major television trophies went to “The Americans,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Homeland” and “Barry” for the 71st Writers Guild Awards, held at dual ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., and the Edison Ballroom in New York City. It was the last major awards show before the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” based on the memoir of the late Lee Israel, topped the screenplays for “Black Panther,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” “A Star Is Born”; and “BlacKkKlansman.” Though the script for the comedy-drama — the story of how Israel discovered her talent for forgery — has received an Oscar nomination, “Beale Street” and “BlacKkKlansman” were regarded as the front-runners. It appears that the tale of the travails and redemption of a professional writer clearly resonated with Hollywood writers.
“I want to thank Lee,” Holofcener said in her acceptance. “She’d probably be sitting in the room judging all of us. She though she was the smartest person in the room and she probably was.”
A stunned Burnham credited star Elsie Fisher for his winning the WGA award. Burnham won over Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma”; Adam McKay’s “Vice”; Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place”; and Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie’s “Green Book.” “Roma,” “Vice” and “Green Book” are all nominated for Academy Awards along with “The Favourite” and “First Reformed” while “Eight Grade” did not receive an Oscar nod.
“Eighth Grade,” which stars Fisher as an awkward teen dealing with the final week of eighth grade, also won the first-time Directors Guild of America Award for Burnham on Feb. 2. The film is also up for four Spirit Awards on Feb. 23.
“To the other nominees in the category — Have fun at the Oscars, losers!” Burnham joked in his acceptance. “No, I prepared nothing. This all belongs to Elsie Fisher who performed the script. No one would care about the script if she hadn’t done it.”
“Eighth Grade” is the first film to win the WGA Original Screenplay award without being nominated for an Academy since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the comedy series award for Kate Fodor, Noah Gardenswartz, Jen Kirkman, Sheila Lawrence, Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, “Mrs. Maisel” won the Emmy for best comedy series last year.
The final season of “The Americans” took the drama series award for Peter Ackerman, Hilary Bettis, Joshua Brand, Joel Fields, Sarah Nolen, Stephen Schiff, Justin Weinberger, Joe Weisberg and Tracey Scott Wilson.
Bill Hader and Alec Berg won the episodic comedy award for the opening segment of HBO’s “Barry,” “Chapter One: Make Your Mark” (“Barry”). They also won the new series award.
Stephanie Gillis won the animated award for the “Bart’s Not Dead” episode of “The Simpsons” — which was just renewed for its 31st and 32nd seasons by Fox — and showrunner Alex Gansa took the episodic drama award for the “Paean To The People” segment of “Homeland.” “Bathtubs Over Broadway” took the documentary award and “God of War” won the videogame trophy.
Hulu’s “Castle Rock” won the long-form original award and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” took the adapted long-form trophy. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the comedy-variety series cagtegory.
Chelsea Peretti hosted the West Coast ceremonies while Roy Wood Jr. was the emcee in New York. “All the glitz and glamor of the Oscars without the pressure of public interest,” Peretti said in her intro.
Jordan Peele’s horror-comedy “Get Out” won the WGA Award for original screenplay and James Ivory’s coming-of-age drama “Call Me by Your Name” won for adapted screenplay last year. Both went on to win the Oscar.
The WGA awards are mixed indicator of Oscar sentiment. Six of the last 10 WGA winners have gone on to win Academy awards over the past five years. The awards are decided in voting by the 17,000 members of the WGA.
The West Coast ceremonies included plenty of political commentary. Adam McKay, on receiving the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award for “Vice,” asked for a “beat of silence” for the million people who died during the invasion of Iraq.
Jenji Kohan, recipient of the Paddy Chayefsky Award, was unable to attend due to having to shoot the final episode of “Orange Is the New Black.” She said in a taped message: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with enormously funny and kind people. I love the people I work with. Life is too short to work with a******s, by the way. That’s my Public Service Announcement.”

Đánh giá sáp vuốt tóc nam The Eternal của Stephen Nolen 603
Đánh giá sáp vuốt tóc nam The Eternal của Stephen Nolen 603
Tumblr media

Mourning the Memory of Ill-Gotten Gains
This reliquary vase, created by Matt Nolen, is featured in the exhibition, The Virtue in Vice, currently on view at Cooper Hewitt. The vase was selected as a visual interpretation of greed, here defined as the acquisition of large sums of money, universally recognized as the hallmark of avarice. Though tongue-in-cheek, Nolen’s reliquary pointedly illustrates the ease of amassing material wealth, as well as the tragic result of over-extended credit.
Matt Nolen’s ceramics are inspired by traditional, even primeval, forms like urns, ewers and vases. Ceramic urns and vases have a long association with funereal customs, serving as reliquaries and repositories from the earliest times of human history. Nolen’s vase pays homage to this ancient tradition of memorializing the passing of the honored or sacred while at the same time satirically commenting on the monetary realities of American society.
This reliquary urn is ornamented with the images of four major credit cards surrounded by wreaths which are symbolic of death and mourning. Further, the lid is inscribed with the words “Credit est Mort” (Credit is Dead) and is surmounted with a finial in the form of a winged businessman in mourning. Interest rates are inscribed on the neck of the urn while percent signs are applied to the shoulders as handles. All the elements come together as a unified whole, a three dimensional vessel which marks the passing of wealth.
A tour de force, the large size and the clear meaning of this ornament make the viewer step back and evaluate the cultural pull to acquire and amass money and goods and the sadness that ensues when that fortune is gone.
Susan Teichman is a design historian who specializes in jewelry history and the architectural history of synagogues.
The Credit Card Reliquary Vase is included in The Virtue in Vice exhibition on view through March 25th, 2018.

Manufacturers Make CPAP Masks for Patients Who Frequently Change Sleep Positions
Manufacturers Make CPAP Masks for Patients Who Frequently Change Sleep Positions Read more on: https://www.ellymackay.com
New sleep apnea interfaces offer different tube placements, tubing characteristics, and seal technologies to accommodate those who move around during their sleep.
By Lindsey Nolen
A CPAP device delivers its pressured air via an interface that connects to the user’s nose and/or mouth, keeping their airways open during sleep. But in attaching to the machine, the interface, commonly referred to as a CPAP mask, can become limiting in terms of movement. For some sleep apnea patients, this makes sleeping with a CPAP mask challenging and may even deter them from continuing treatment. How can sleep medicine professionals help patients who change positions during their sleep find a CPAP mask that accommodates them? Manufacturers respond to this challenge with innovative solutions.
“At Philips, we launched the DreamWear line of masks, which places the air tube connection at the top of the head to provide greater freedom of movement throughout the night and a more comfortable sleeping experience,” says Kevin Coldren, sleep solutions leader at Philips. “The mask features minimalist tubing that runs from the top of the head to under the nose, so users can have the freedom to sleep in the position they’re most comfortable in.” Philips designed its DreamWear line—where airflow travels through the mask frame to the hose on top of the head—so that one side can be flattened and the wearer will still receive adequate therapy via airflow on the opposite side of the frame.
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is working to enhance mobility as well. “Around 2007, Fisher & Paykel released the Opus 360 mask, which had a tube placed overhead. However, the real breakthrough with positional freedom came with the invention of RollFit technology, first launched with the F&P Simplus full face mask,” says Matt Caughey, category marketing manager—OSA product management at Fisher & Paykel.
In F&P’s RollFit technology, the walls of the mask cushion and the sealing surfaces are designed to decouple any external force to cause movement on the sealing surface. A rolling silicone element relieves pressure on the bridge of the nose, and “it is also designed to keep the seal stable and in place while patients move during the night, ie designed to adjust and seal dynamically, irrespective of the hose orientation,” Caughey says. “Fundamentally, the cushion sealing surfaces and structural stability of the overall mask are critical in maintaining a consistent seal given a variety of facial geometries and patient’s movement.”
Sleep diagnosis and therapy company ResMed reinvests 7% to 8% of yearly revenue into research and development. “Patient needs and preferences related to movement are one of several that we explore when designing the next generation of CPAP products to help maximize patient adherence and satisfaction, as well as efficiencies for [home medical equipment companies] and sleep labs,” says Annie McBride, ResMed’s vice president marketing of Sleep North America.
In the past year, ResMed released four new masks. These include its “Freedom” category of tube-up masks (AirFit P30i, N30i, and F30i), designed to help users sleep in any position.
Other features also allow for movement during sleep. “Over the years, the design of the tubes has become more flexible, including added comfort settings such as our ClimateLine heated tubing,” McBride says. “Plus, ResMed mask connectors or ‘elbows’ allow the tube to swivel 360 degrees, so users have the freedom to move during sleep without bending or knotting the tube. We have been seeing users opt for longer tubing to give them more freedom of movement during sleep positioning changes.”
Launched in March 2019, new CPAP interface company Bleep Sleep markets its DreamPort Sleep Solution, which connects directly to the nose with tubing that hangs off the face via adhesive surgical tape that creates a flush seal on the nostrils to prevent air leaks, according to the company. Alan Greene, RRT, chief marketing officer at Bleep Sleep, says “The DreamPort is leak free in any position the patient chooses.”
Full face mask marketer Hans Rudolph Inc is “constantly researching ways to improve our product offering, including patient comfort and freedom of movement,” says Nick Rudolph, Hans Rudolph’s sales and marketing manager. “Comfort has always been in mind with our models. We’re trying to fit the anatomical position of a patient’s face.” Its full face masks are made of one soft facepiece with internal sealing flanges, as opposed a hard frame and cushion assembly, which the company says means less pressure apply is needed to achieve a seal.
Beyond positional freedom, sleep professionals and patients can expect more new mask features this year.
Philips, for one, has been working on technology to enhance and personalize the mask selection process. Later this year, the company expects to make available the Philips Respironics Mask Selector, a 3D scanning and sizing tool that recommends mask type, frame, and precise cushion size for the patient, based on each patient’s facial structure and size. “Patients are always seeking masks that provide them with greater comfort and more freedom of movement during sleep. These two factors greatly affect the adherence of CPAP therapy, so this is something we’re constantly working to enhance,” Philips’ Coldren says.
Fisher & Paykel’s Caughey says, “The future of CPAP masks and devices include: smaller, lighter, more stable, new innovative materials—which ultimately make CPAP therapy more effective and desirable for patients.” When designing new interfaces, he adds, “Our product development philosophy is very patient centric. Patient input, through research, is continually take into consideration for designing our new products. Freedom of movement is multi-faceted. For example, it can relate to minimizing the pull on the CPAP hose as the patient moves during the night, or it can relate to the ability to keep the seal stable during the night.”
Ultimately, when determining what mask will be the most comfortable for a patient, providers must understand the benefits of the different types of masks including full face masks, nasal masks, or nasal pillows masks, to determine what will work best for them. Everyone with sleep apnea has different needs—as do the clinicians who treat them.
Lindsey Nolen is a Jacksonville, Fla-based journalist who has been writing about healthcare for over 5 years.
How to Get CPAP Mask Samples
