Steve Gerber was a genius writer Alan Moore and Grant Morrison and all these others have apparently been inspired by him. But none of them have the magic touch Steve Gerber had. Gerber could truly capture the human element, at it's highest highs and it's lowest lows.

I've read his Daredevil work, his Defenders work, his Man-Thing run, his work on the Son of Satan and his work on Howard the Duck. It's all amazing, in different ways. His Daredevil was more standard superhero fare, but it managed to feature a story with Man-Thing that had a message on pollution. It also managed to feature a story about rascism and about governmental corruption in the time of watergate…

His Man-Thing was technically about the empathic monster that was once Ted Sallis, but Man-Thing is a reactive force. Everything around him is the creepy and psychologically telling part. The Fool Killer, a fountain of youth, a dead circus clown having to perform for his spectral critics, a tired ad executive whose nightmares were coming to life, a tale about vietnam, a story of toxic masculinity, of high school suicide because of psychological torment, and of book burnings. There's a reason I had to take a break from reading Man-Thing, and that's because it's so psychologically messed up, yet somehow profoundly beautiful.

The best part of Man-Thing, though, was undoubtedly the stories involving Jennifer Kale, Dakimh the Enchanter, Korrek the Barbarian and Thog the Nether-Spawn. Those stories of the nexus of all realities and of the cosmos were beautiful and fascinating. Doubly fascinating is how Man-Thing is the guardian of the nexus, and yet he's so simple minded as to never know. And yet I think that says something. Man thing being mindless, is possibly the most pure being ever. We humans have materialism, greed, war, hate. But Man-Thing knows none of that. He just…is.

And although Steve Gerber's run on the Son of Satan was brief, Steve Gerber still managed to insert some good messages in those stories. And he clearly liked Daimon Hellstrom, since he made him guest star in The Defenders and Howard the Duck. And Steve Gerber's run on the Son of Satan was amazing. From his really weird and trippy story featuring an evil cult of nihilists, to an apocalyptic event having to be prevented by Daimon Hellstrom going back in time and fighting the twisted and warped form of Adam of Eden.

We also got to see demons who feed on stagnation and lack of change, and a revisiting of the atlantean prophetess zhered-na (mentioned in man-thing). Considering Steve Gerber also wrote Namor for a while (although I never read his Namor stuff), I have to wonder if he just really liked Atlantis. It was a brief run with Hellstrom, but there was a lot of cool stuff.

Steve Gerber's Defenders was great too. The Defenders was like a combination of his normal superhero fare (ala daredevil) mixed with the bizarre and profound existentialism of his Howard the Duck comics. Plus there were some great found family style dynamics on that team.
