There’s someone on Reddit I’ve seen trying to spread “Chris hates Jess” around. They just say it in the comments like fact as a way to support Emily and to argue that Emily x Chris is a good ship. When asked what they’re talking about, they say it’s from the beta. And a) This is misleading? I feel like you’d only just say it like fact if you’re trying to mislead b) So? The beta isn’t the final game. c) Chris… doesn’t hate Jess in the beta that I recall? I only remember him asking if she wants to come with them but maybe I missed a clip.
Anyway. I need to do my analysis on Emily soon because I feel like her fan base is starting to make me straight up dislike her. She has her merits, but I slog through misinformation or misleading comments pertaining to Emily every day it feels like. Her fans edit the wiki with false info and get really unfair in debates. The other day, someone got mad at me for saying “Emily helped Matt off the cliff” because they wanted me to admit she completely hauled him up, making her stronger than Sam? I’ve seen people say Sam doesn’t like Mike or Jess because she supports Emily. And now I’m seeing “Chris x Emily because Chris hates Jess too.”
Like if you have to lie about Emily to like her, do you really like Emily? If you have to intentionally misread scenes and frame them not for what they actually mean for the plot but more for a way to bolster your fave, do you really care about the lore? I feel treated like a massive Emily and Ashley hater just because I’m trying to understand the story and, yes, they did things wrong. And it’s not hating on Em to be like “this didn’t happen in the game.”

it's so hard explaining how i imagine the dynamics of luke cage, danny rand and jessica jones
a) it's important that at some point they've had some weirdass romance pentagon with matt murdock and peter parker and misty knight (who had something with colleen). ahem.
b) lukedannyjess is wholesome bc it's the world where all three of them are happy. usually the three of them raising dani cage
c) lukedanny is good because THIS is a real example of best friends to lovers.
d) lukejess is good because it's canon, and they make each other better people and i just love them so much
e) dannyjess gets overlooked a lot, part of which is because of the fact that danny really didn't like jess when luke first brought her around, but they're since cleared that up. but the narrative potential of luke being injured and falling in love with the partner of the man you're in love with has a lot of hgnnnngnggh good plot to it
f) dannymisty, where lukedannyjess does NOT happen. though in this timeline, danny definitely had feelings for luke at some point, can't convince me otherwise. but in this timeline, we get lucy rand, who CANONICALLY ends up marrying dani cage in a timeline where they both exist
guys im so normal aboout this i swear--

i see this a lot all over the fandom, and i have written a lot of posts regarding this in various headcanon posts, but i think answering it directly will make more sense:
why did josh prank chris, ashley, and sam so hard compared to mike, jess, emily, and matt?
first off, i'm going to just re-explain myself over re-linking any old posts, but know i've written this before so i'm just referencing myself basically.
regarding jess and mike: josh was likely going to film them in the isolated cabin and use that footage to exploit them the way he feels hannah exploited. basically? a sex tape.
matt and emily feat. mike jess: this is the hardest for me. i think there are several things to address here ... a) josh had to adapt to it being mike and jess, not mike and emily, and had likely planned to isolate mike and jess into a situation of hooking up, getting emily to see it, and somehow using matt to do that because matt likes emily. b) matt and emily could never do the chris and ashley plot. emily is way too smart. also, mike and jessica would never take it seriously enough. additionally, mike and jess as well as matt and em need to do the mines / miner plot. chris and ashley are not physically capable enough. sam might have been able to do the firehouse thing, but not likely. c) i have considered maybe he had a separate thing for matt and em to lead them back to chris and ash? maybe? but i think we would have seen more of what josh would have done to them had he not been interrupted by the plot of until dawn lmao
so, yes. josh was going to prank those four. just the plot of the game interfered with josh's plot, which is a cover plot for the real plot of until dawn.
sam: josh sees sam as guilty. this is why he pranks sam. it doesn't matter if the player doesn't get that. josh thinks sam is guilty of betraying hannah, so he betrays her. pretty simple stuff. the cut dialogue between josh's masked killer and sam was more revealing and would have been helpful. he sees sam as someone that watches the pain of others from afar. he sees her as the bystander complex in his tier of guilt.
chris and ashley: i've made so many posts about this. josh sees chris as a) not guilty, b) not self-motivated (literally gun to the head to confess to ash, all the foreshadowing, etc), c) josh is putting chris in a hero position and ash in a victim position (hannah was the victim). he uses chris also to punish ashley a bit, especially revealing the tape to chris (thus showing josh never showed that tape to chris ... but also no one else was really being super honest with chris and josh either). josh sees chris very highly, no shipping stuff included in this btw. that's just a fact. chris knows the most about josh. so ... think of this, too. chris has to be there. so does sam. not having them there would indicate so fast to the group that something was up, especially if josh has distanced himself from them as is heavily implied. the entire group became fractured fast in that year between pranks. also ... the remake does one thing right with the prologue that always bothered me: fixing the positioning of ashley and matt. how was matt ever going to film from the closet. now ... the ashley problem. she literally sees nothing, her best angle is seeing matt. so idk how guilty josh finds her, he sees her kinda close to sam. guilt by association / not caring / victimizing hannah. the difference? ashley wasn't hannah's bestie.
if anyone wants more chris and josh explanation content, in addition to sam and hannah content, i do have posts addressing this much more in detail, but this is just a pretty good summary. josh is paralleling everything as what he perceives to be a 1-for-1 to what happened with hannah. he never wanted to actually hurt them, though. an ego death is the closest he could ever encounter. everything josh did was fake.
edit: regarding mike and jess btw you know he had them being isolated planned from the start, josh tells mike to go to the cabin he “told mike about” — josh already got the idea 💡 going before mike even knew it was going to happen. again, he likely was gonna do a cheating thing for mike-em-jess using matt to help lead em to mike and jess but josh had to adapt as the relationships changed.

drabble/meta request: the moment josh starts putting the plan in place, what sparked the initial idea and different drafts of it, what traps or scares got left on the cutting room floor?
ask me questions about my character! ☆ always accepting ☆ @mountaindmned
i think this idea was planned for a while. i've mentioned before how much stress he puts on like his scene with sam when he tells her how important it is she came, her reflections about josh in her police interview about them being close, his general evasiveness during that year (as kind of ... not directly commented on but almost eluded to? by his lack of relationship status with the gang sans chris), etc. here is a post that might just add context as to josh's year between the pranks ie more his time in the system.
this started early. here is why i think this:
a) it doesn't seem like anyone actually fessed up to josh. likely what happened is that josh woke up, the gang realized the girls were not coming back, and josh then sprung into action (with likely chris), spurring action from the others. he had to call the police, he had to tell his parents, and the most consistent story he could get was likely "hannah got upset about mike, she ran off, beth followed". i say this because it seems like josh got that footage somehow (likely matt dropped the camera or something out of stress / not thinking about it). i have also mentioned that the washington family would have sued those kids so hard. i also follow the 2015 release's version of the prank a lot more than the remake for a lot of reasons, which i detail here. more context here. if he would have told his parents, they would have just handled it. i think josh 1) doesn't rely much on his parents, partially a distrust that stems from his illness (sometimes they are heroes, sometimes they are against him), and 2) josh thinks that he can take care of this the way it needs to be taken care of. no parents involved.
b) josh kind of almost implies he knows nothing about their prank on hannah by playing dumb. he's also playing dumb to "being killed" like they could have been killed after leaving, but his general vibe is like "totally naive to the whole thing". this is much more subtle, i guess, but it's there if you look for it.
i'm going to be cheesy and say a lot of "what got scrapped" was what we were supposed to be in the beta of the 2013 prototype by supermassive. likely a solo death for him, more intense probing of sam (the scene is much more explicit with her nudity in the prototype), and probably some additional jumpscares that seemed too cheesy or unbelievable. he might have considered the idea of killing himself out of grief in front of them (not for real, of course), or maybe "josh makes a choice" ... but chris is his hero figure. chris and ashley are painted to be the likable protags for josh's movie.
the amount of detail work, planning, plotting, and just actual work (on top of deliveries, getting these funds (and what i mean by this is that like ... i've mentioned josh either has a bank account he can access or his parents literally do not watch his spending, like he is unmanaged in the money department badly), etc) that this "prank" entails, on top of setting up cameras and a "workshop base", as well as making an entire original character to play ... is almost more than a year's worth of work.
it's also worthy to note that josh basically wrote this with like ... an improvised script in mind. enough dialogue to get the scenes where they need to be, but without writing the lines for the actors. he knows these people very well. he knows what they'll say or what they'll do to get the scene in the direction it needs to go. that is immensely eye-opening to his character. he is insanely good at reading people. he took his education seriously.
what sparked the idea? i think this group plays a lot of pranks even before the game. they are always pranking each other, we see it throughout the game in many ways from jess pranking mike, emily pranking matt, josh messing with chris, chris pranking sam and josh, etc etc. the list goes on. so ... logically, it makes sense that josh would do a 1-for-1. everything he does to the gang is parallelling what he views happened to hannah.
he thinks sam's relationship with hannah meant more to hannah than it did to sam, thus his relationship with sam will mean more to sam than it will to him. chris was not involved in the prank, and he needs "encouragement" to get with ashley. he "makes chris a hero figure" in his film (chris would have likely gone after hannah seeing how he willingly goes after sam and josh despite his bravery stat being so low wtf) with ashley as the victim (hannah was a victim) ... but also ashley didn't "see" a lot being literally in the closet facing matt? what was the point? thus her "tier of guilt" has her lower than some of the others. here is josh's tier of guilt list. i believe he was trying to make a sex tape of mike and jess to parallel hannah being exposed on film (the original note literally tells her to take off her shirt ... it's very ooc of her to do that just on her own, i'm sorry). hard to say with em and matt, i have considered some options, and then we see chris and ash, and then sam is like ... i mean, he's obviously tormenting her by making her watch, which is what he thinks she did with hannah. the bystander. watch your own demise. watch josh die. you watched hannah die. that kind of thing. comfort in the pain of others. too afraid to raise your voice (she literally whispers in the intro and even quiets herself when she heard hannah going up the stairs with the others). she is a pacifist. also, he's more artistically bombarding sam in an aesthetically horrifying way (she is the artist).
the second he saw that video, the gears were turning. he just had to "get better enough" to do it.

Final Chain of Thorns Predictions!
This is SPOILER FREE - I have managed to avoid all of the spoilers that leaked early!
This is my last post before getting the kindle book at midnight and logging off until I finish… I’ll see you all on the other side 🫡
And happy book birthday, Chain of Thorns! We’ve all been waiting for a long time (I started this blog in 2016… who knew it would take until 2023 to get the final book?!)
As a quick note, I will be using the tags #chain of thorns spoilers and #chot spoilers after I finish the book, and I will continue using the tags for the next month!
Without further ado, here are my final predictions (split by category):
Overall Plot:
Belial will be more desperate in this book than the other two to see his plan succeed. He is going to do something much bigger than we’ve seen before.
I think Belial will either a) unleash his shadow monsters through to Gate to Nowhere into London while our heroes are isolated there alone, or b) pull our heroes into another realm (a shadowy version of London) and unleash a massive invasion on them there
We know the truth about Tessa, James, and Lucie’s connection to Belial will come out. I believe the Herondale’s will be punished for this and lose access to the institute (but I think they’ll get it back in the end).
We also know something will happen with the artifacts found in Jesse’s coffin in SoBH (James’ gun, Cordelia’s scabbard, Jesse’s sword). I have no idea why these ended up there, but we know something bad happened at least with the gun (remember Tessa’s traumatic reaction to it and the way she stepped in front of Mina?) I think James is going to shoot someone (either accidentally or be forced to if someone is possessed/being controlled by Belial/etc.) and even if it’s not fatal I think it will be traumatic. I know a lot of people think he will shoot Lucie (maybe to protect Cordelia), and while the thought breaks my heart it does explain Tessa’s reaction.
Speaking of Jesse’s sword, I think he will use it to kill Tatiana. It was foreshadowed that Jesse would kill her in the ChoG prologue (remember Lucie’s game, that he’d cut off his evil stepmother’s head?) and I really think he will have to be the one to do it, because he’s the only character with a little sympathy for her (although Grace could also be the one to take her down I suppose!)
As for the chess metaphor… honestly, the way I see this going down is Belial vs. Lilith, using the different characters as their pawns. Lilith has Cordelia as her paladin, and I highly suspect that Lucie will somehow fall under Belial’s control (remember the snippet where Jesse said what Lucie did raising him made her more vulnerable to Belial?) I think Cordelia and Lucie might have to fight one another (under their respective demon’s control) and James might have to shoot one of them. Imagine the angst!! (Also side thought: maybe shooting Cordelia with the gun would break her connection to Lilith?)
Contrary to popular belief, I actually don’t think Matthew will die! I could see him sacrificing himself (getting stuck in Faerie, perhaps, or staying behind in another realm) or perhaps getting turned into a vampire (although I think this is too obvious now that Cassie has teased it so much). However, I do think he will be the character to stay alive and carry over into TWP!
Character Deaths:
Tatiana - I don’t really see a version where she survives this. If she somehow survives I think she’ll have her marks stripped and/or end up in prison in the Silent City for life.
Sona - A popular theory, but unfortunately I think it’s likely. There have already been so many hints that Sona is not doing well and will not survive the birth of Baby Carstairs. I hope I’m wrong about this though!
A Gabrily Kid - I HATE THIS, but I think they are the most likely of our “main cast” to be killed. Sophie and Gideon already lost Barbara, and losing Eugenia would not have the same emotional toll (we don’t know her as well as Anna and Christopher). I don’t think Matthew will die either (Cassie already killed one alcoholic, and it wouldn’t be an uplifting message if neither of them manages to recover/lead fulfilling lives) so it will have to be Anna or Christopher. BUT I HOPE I’M WRONG
Grace - Okay I hate this a little less than the one above, but I still hate it. I feel like it’s cheap writing for her “redemption arc” to end with death, especially for a character whose story is already so morally gray. It’s also a little misogynistic, but that’s a whole long conversation (the gist though: men who make “morally gray” mistakes are easily forgiven, women who do the same are often only redeemed with death).
One of the TID gang: I don’t think so, but I could see her writing off Gideon or Henry (PLEASE NO)
Romantic Endgames:
James/Cordelia - will definitely end up together. I believe they will both survive, decide to stay married, and continue the Herondale line that eventually leads to Jace.
Matthew/Cordelia - might have a brief thing together at the start of the book, but Matthew’s alcoholism/Cordelia’s feelings for James will quickly interfere. I don’t think this will last long, if it happens at all.
Lucie/Jesse - my faves! I’m 99.99% sure they will end up together and maybe about 70% sure that their line will lead to the current LA Blackthorns. I do think there is a chance that they will be exiled, but I really don’t want to see that happen to them.
Thomas/Alastair - I’m also 99.99% sure that they will both survive and get together by the end. I could see them raising Baby Carstairs if Sona passes away; if not, I’m sure they will adopt kids of their own!
Christopher/Grace - I love the potential, but I’m worried Christopher and/or Grace could be killed during the book. If they both survive, I think there’s about a 60 - 70% chance of this one happening?
Anna/Ariadne - Again, I’m not sure if Anna will survive. If she does, I do think they will end up together!
Future Generations:
James/Cordelia - I am certain they continue the Herondale line through their son Owen, and that line will eventually lead to Jace.
Lucie/Jesse - I see two possibilities for their line. The first is that it eventually leads to the TDA Blackthorns in LA; the other is that their line leads to the Blackthorn “cousins” we hear about but never see in TDA. In SoBH, Great Aunt Marjorie leaves her main house to one of these unnamed cousins; a lot of people think Marjorie could be Lucie and Jesse’s daughter (because Marjorie = the English version of Margaret, and what is the nickname for Margaret? That’s right, Daisy… we all know Lucie would do this in a heartbeat), so it would make sense that she would leave her main house to a “direct descendant” (probably a grand-niece or -nephew here) rather than a relation from the other line of Blackthorns. If this is the case, we can think of the Blackthorns as two separate lines; there are the Cornwall Blackthorns (Annabel, Felix, that Sticky-Hands guy James and Lucie talk about, etc. etc. all the way down to Andrew and his children) and the Leeds Blackthorns (Rupert, Jesse, down to these unnamed cousins today). If this is the case, hopefully we can meet these other Blackthorns in TWP!
Thomas/Alastair - I believe they will adopt Baby Carstairs (and perhaps some other children too), but I think Baby Carstairs will be a boy and Emma will come from his line.
Christopher/Grace - On the CP2 family tree (I KNOW, I KNOW), their line eventually leads to Alec and Izzy. However, I think Alec and Izzy could also come from Alexander - hence Alec’s name.
Anna/Ariadne - I really, really hope they end up together and adopt children, especially because Ariadne dreams of being a mother - I want her to fulfill that dream while still being true to her authentic self!
Connection to TDA/TWP:
Okay, so my big theory for TWP (for years!) has been that all the characters will have to come back to fight the big threat (maybe all of the princes of hell working together and attacking at once?) Perhaps the TID/TLH characters are raised as the consequence of these attacks/threats, or maybe they just come back briefly to fight? Maybe Lucie or Livvy or someone with ~ghost powers~ has something to do with it? Either way, we NEED this to happen. I scream about it all the time, but the POTENTIAL.
If Lucie and Jesse’s line leads to these unnamed Blackthorn cousins, I think they will come into play in TWP.
Those are all my theories for now! Happy reading all 🫶

#TH1RTE3N  is  a  group  verse  based  around  original  slasher  lore.  if  you  want  to  know  more  or  you’re  interested  in  joining,  please  read  the  CARRD.
the plot follows a slasher in two different timelines, targeting a group of friends who all went to school together. the first timeline takes place in the summer of 2009, following graduation leading up to the first six victims being killed. there was a thirteen year gap, where most of the survivors fled town and moved on with their lives. the second time line picks up in the summer of 2022 with kill #7, when first hale came back to hell and ended up being the first kill of the new timeline. the killer used the funeral and threatened family members and friends to lure the other six names on the list back to hell. the original six victims are available to be written in the 2009 timeline. to make this plot work best, we need other citizens of hell, ohio too. think of the characters in your favorite slasher films. cops, classmates, siblings and cousins, exes, anyone that could spice up the plot through dynamics. you are welcome to make another character affiliated with any other existing character in the plot, as long as you discuss it with the mun of the character you are affiliating with first (i will check, don't be weird.)

Note
tell us about your daddy Tom headcanons 👀
Okay so what it boils down to for me is that I think Tom genuinely wants to be a father. I think part of it for him definitely is the checklist of like ✅ high-powered job ✅ beautiful wife ✅ beautiful kids that I think he’s mentally had since he was young. But I also think that as he’s gotten older he does genuinely want to be a dad. Matt Mac has talked about how part of Tom’s affection for Greg is rooted in a desire to be a sort of father-figure to somebody; I think Tom genuinely loves being able to lavish love and affection on people. With Shiv and with Greg it’s complicated by other factors, but kids are a less complicated bc they haven’t yet been battered into cynicism by the forces of the world (hopefully).
(Obviously within the context of succ their are other more strategic factors at play in terms of why he wants to have a baby with Shiv, but I do think he still wants to be a dad regardless.)
So because of all that I think that Tom would actually be an affectionate father. There’s been some discussion over whether a Shiv pregnancy plot line would be a good or bad thing; I see the potential pitfalls but I have faith in Jesse Armstrong handling it well if they went that route. And I would be interested in seeing Tom and Shiv have a kid in confluence with Tom becoming increasingly Logan-esque in the workplace. I don’t think it would necessarily transfer over to his home life bc I think he would be able to compartmentalize in a way Logan never did, but the contrast would be interesting. It also opens the door to the potential of his kids getting older and struggling to reconcile the loving affectionate dad they know with the morally bankrupt abusive boss they discover he is in the workplace.
Aside from that I think if he had kids in any context (tomshiv or tomgreg or any other Tom ship) he would absolutely spoil them. He would buy them all sorts of stuff all the time. He would need his partner to reign him in from actually legitimately turning them into spoiled brats by accident. He would HATE to be the ‘bad guy’ when it came to discipline. If he did have to do it (bc his partner rightfully objected to having to always be the bad guy) I think he would get very morose afterwards.
I also think he would be one of those parents who just. Legitimately believes their child is better than all other children objectively and in every way. Anything his kids are good at he’s gonna absolutely crow to other parents over. Other parents and teachers will all hate him. He’s also going to be SUPER effusive with the praise whenever his kids do even moderately well at something, and it’s not even an act! If little Ariadne brings home a B+ on her math test she’s doing absolutely amazing. If she brings home a C+ it’s probably just that the math was unusually difficult for her brilliant brain. It does have the potential to become a legitimate problem if he doesn’t have a partner who’s more grounded and can flag any actual issues that Tom would overlook.
(If Tom had a special needs kid I think he’d still be the same way. When they got diagnosed I think he’d be 😕 for all of five seconds and then he would go ‘okay but my child is still the best and smartest and most special of all the other children regardless’.)
I also think he’d definitely play with his kids and go all-in. To me he is one of those guys who tries to be all mAsCuLiNe and whatever in the workplace and then he goes home and lets his daughter use him as a pony in her Princess castle who is also the royal advisor in her surprisingly complicated make-believe games of political intrigue. If he’s having a conversation with another adult and Perseus interrupts with some nonsense about the state of centaurs in the magic kingdom Tom treats it with all the seriousness of someone telling him Waystar’s in a brand new PR crisis. One of them gives him a crown they made out of pipe cleaners and he solemnly accepts it and then genuinely forgets to take it off until he goes to bed.
As they get older I think he stays very supportive and engaged in whatever their interests are. I don’t think he would miss a recital or a game unless there was really truly an emergency he absolutely had to deal with. He’s also, unfortunately, the kind of parent that needs to be involved in whatever their kid’s hobby is. If one of his kids is into dance he’s gonna be a dance mom. If it’s theatre he’s gonna be a theatre mom. If it’s little league he’s gonna try and coach from the sidelines. Once again other parents are going to hate him. I do think it reaches the point of being embarrassing for his kids, and every time they complain he backs off for about a week and then goes back to being just as bad as before.
When they host sleepovers (which is very often) Tom needs them to be objectively the best sleepovers. He buys too much junk food, and then he does the whole ‘okay lights out’ routine while fully aware the kids are sneaking out to the living room to watch TV and he lets them so that they can have the thrill of rebellion. When they do eventually fall asleep in front of the TV he goes out and throws blankets over everybody. Then he makes pancakes in the morning and lets them go absolutely hogwild on the whipped cream and candy, and sends them home with a sugar high. Once again. The other parents WILL hate him. (This is a major theme in Tom's life as a parent.) They will keep sending their kids for sleepovers though because he hosts SO often and it's basically free babysitting.
I think in high school when his kids start dating he’s gonna get weird about it. He is gonna be the dad who’s like “no one’s good enough for my little girl” except it’ll go for all his kids regardless of gender. He has obscenely high standards for his kids and no boyfriend or girlfriend is ever going to meet them. He does resign himself to this pretty early, and he doesn’t forbid them from dating because he knows how that ends, but when SOs come over for dinner they always feel kind of like he’s subtly death glaring them. He lets his kids invite their SOs to family vacations, which the kids think is great but the SOs are always mildly afraid he’s gonna murder them. The kids think they’re just being paranoid.
He also gives good, thoughtful advice. Once they hit high school he starts making a deliberate conscious effort to be the kind of parent they feel comfortable going to about tricky or uncomfortable things. He’s not always good at not immediately reacting emotionally if they tell him something upsetting or they’ve gotten into some kind of trouble, but he makes a real effort to be non-judgmental and open, and to take the approach of ‘okay, so that was a bad decision but now I’m gonna help you fix it’, so his kids do feel comfortable going to him, and they know to just wait out the initial emotional reaction until he gets a hold of himself (which he gets better at doing more quickly over time).
Also I think he’s AMAZING at dealing with breakups. When his kids dump or get dumped it’s all-out, ice cream on the couch, a weekend of whatever breakup movies are most gonna help them. He does immediately jump to the ‘I always though you were too good for them anyways’ which is sometimes kind of annoying, but it is well-intentioned so they let it slide.
I think he’s going to try to be super in-contact with his kids as adults. The whole ‘saw a snail today, effervescent’ meme will be him but with his kids. They don’t always answer his texts because he texts them literally all the time, but they will try to do an emoji react or something bc if he thinks they’re ignoring him he will just start texting more. He sends them memes he thinks are funny, or that they’ll find funny. They generally are not funny to them bc they’re very much Gen X memes, but they laugh react anyways. They go home to visit pretty regularly and Tom always makes a production of it, like they haven’t seen each other in AGES, even though actually they saw each other 6 weeks ago at their cousin’s wedding wedding and then 4 weeks before for somebody’s birthday, and also they’re coming back to visit again 3 weeks just because they’re gonna be in town for work reasons.
And finally - he’s gonna cry when they go to college. He’s also going to cry when they graduate. And he’s going to cry at their weddings. And he’s going to cry when they get their first job and on their eighteenth birthdays and if they move out of the state and just. At literally any life event that reminds him that they’re getting older and leaving the nest. Not full on weeping, but definitely the kind of almost-crying we saw during his wedding toast. They all know to just pretend they don’t see it because he gets weird and defensive if you draw any attention to it.

How would you fix The Defenders? My ideas are A) some acknowledgement that Matt and Claire know each other 🙄 and B) Foggy, Karen, Malcolm and Trish participated somehow in the finale at Midland Circle rather than be stuck back at the precinct. 🤔
The Defenders. Ugh.
Tbh I’m gonna scrap, like, all of it. Matt and Elektra’s dynamic is powerful and hypnotizing but EVERYTHING ELSE is just…bleh, imo.
Long post, guys. This is me just ranting because it could've been SO GOOD but instead—
Like first off, why is the villain the Hand? Not only is there gross racism with everything Hand-related, but why are you forcing Jess and Luke to deal with mysterious ninja stuff? Like okay it’s kinda funny the first couple times Jess jokes about ninjas and karate and all that, but it’s not THAT funny. Plus, her jokes about how absurd it is don’t feel genuine; it feels like the writers awkwardly going, “Yeah, we know it’s ridiculous.” PLUS, her jokes actually break the immersion because we, the audience, agree with her that it’s weird! Jokes about the plot where your audience agrees with the joke just makes the plot feel like a joke! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT.
Sorry, I’m fine.
Anyway, Jessica’s humor is one of the only pros to the Hand storyline. The other pro is Matt and Elektra, and Matt and Stick. And as a Daredevil fan, I’m kinda cool with those pros, but dang, that’s pretty unfair to the other characters, isn’t it?
And the cons. The cons are severe.
Suspension of disbelief. I’m sorry, no, I don’t believe there are dragons under New York City.
Related: the worldbuilding? Broken. Why would you take a city as interesting as New York and make it a backdrop for ninjas?
Stakes? Gone. The Hand isn’t scary! What do they even do? They can’t kill any of our main four heroes, they can’t kill any of our heroes’ friends…they just cause an earthquake and kidnap Danny and chop of Misty’s arm and that’s it. And I knew from the beginning that they wouldn’t do anything more than that because no way would an impactful character be killed off in a spinoff series. (Elektra doesn’t count. She’s definitely not dead.)
Rising action? Ugh. Okay we gotta kidnap Danny from faceless and fairly incompetent ninjas and surprise surprise, it goes off without a hitch except for Matt’s self-sacrificing love for Elektra which is a *Matt* thing and no thanks at all to the Hand actually being effective villains.
Climax’s relation to the characters’ individual arcs? Nonexistent – again, except for Matt.
Space to actually explore characters? Reduced. We kept having to check in with Alexandra who, I’m sorry, was just really boring, and Elektra got a cool little character arc I guess but when you already have to balance four leads in a single show, that’s NOT the time to also try to flesh out TWO BAD GUYS because then we just don’t have enough time to get to know any of the characters with nuance. I would’ve rather had one single scene of Matt and Claire interacting than all the scenes of Alexandra looking pensively at pill bottles and contemplating her own mortality or whatever she was doing.
Adlksfjdklwe.
No, I will not be taking constructive criticism. The Hand storyline was just awful.
What Defenders should’ve been was about crime. Some crime boss like Matt's or Luke's villains, but who does NOT need to be complex or developed as a character; in a series like Defenders, give me a two-dimensional villain that actually HURTS PEOPLE and DOES STUFF). That way we get to have real stakes and we get real people getting hurt and needing to be saved from an actual and present threat and we get New York being, like, a character in its own right, and we get to really explore stuff like Luke’s efforts to protect young poor Black kids and Danny trying to adapt to modern life, and Jessica could spend less time rolling her eyes at the LITERAL PLOT and more time rolling her eyes at Danny. Plus, we get the humor of Danny trying to be all mystical in a world that’s decidedly NOT (way funnier and less immersion-breaking than Jessica trying to deal with a world that’s objectively crazy).
AND! We’d get to save the gut-wrenching stuff with Stick and Elektra for a season of Daredevil where it can actually be thoroughly explored. And there’s no reason Matt couldn’t still make some self-sacrificing/suicidal choice at the end that sets up Season 3 the same as before, but this time it wouldn’t have to involve somehow-escaping-from-a-collapsed-building-while-unconscious which ????
AND! The side characters could actually be involved without being immediately and obviously overpowered! Trish and Karen could’ve teamed up to dig up dirt on the bad guy and Matt and Foggy could’ve done some lawyerly things together to protect the people being hurt by the crime boss and Malcolm could’ve talked to Danny because I just think those two would be hilarious together. And Claire could’ve healed Matt when he got hurt in a fight at the halfway point and it would’ve been painful and sweet and awkward and—and we would’ve had time for it because the show could’ve focused on the main characters instead of skipping back and forth between them and the villain.
Anyway. That’s how I would’ve rewritten Defenders.

I like thinking about what characters might collect.
I think Ashley is the type to have a pretty decent sized vinyl collection. A good portion passed down from her parents as they got her into the addiction, with worn out jackets of heavily classic rock records which she loves flipping through but refuses to allow others to touch as well as everything's she's bought or been gifted the past few years. I want to say her own personal taste is indie rock/pop, maybe indietronica.
Jess has a corkboard on her wall of memories. Selfies and photos with friends with concert tickets in between of all the biggest popstars, decorated like an unorganized scrapbook which she insists she's not lame enough to get into that hobby despite the fact most of her materials come from that aisle at the art store.
Emily and Matt like fashion. It's how they really started talking and connected. Sure, definitely not the same brands, designers, or type of accessories, but their excitement over plotting out how to be able to catch a new release and turning around to flip products is a passionate conversation and nothing matches their excitement for new lines or being able to brag about exclusivity. They have so many shoes. Matt's untouched sneakerhead collection can match Emily's unused purse variety.
Josh is obvious. Floor to ceiling shelving units of DVDs, vhs, sometimes even a literal film reel of any and all movies. Indie, directors cuts, B-films, award winners, backyard projects, you name it. It is not uncommon to be shuffling through them and see covers or discs casually signed by those who created it. They don't seem to be organized by name or genre. Maybe director? You can't tell and he won't explain but he does know where every single one is. Buying him a movie as a gift is a pain in the ass because he probably already has it.
Sam likes to collect tiny handcarved animals. Small creatures whittled out stones and wood, never bone. Any time she travels you can catch her staring and huffing at display cases of those tiny artistic glass and crystal animals that are overpriced. She prefers ones made by local artists. She has a shelf in her room full that she refuses to call knick knacks.

discussing hannah and sam's relationship — featuring @ottersden's hannah, who i highly suggest you follow:
after talking a lot with otter about this, who writes hannah, it's pretty clear that the relationship between sam and hannah meant more to hannah as they grew up than it did to sam. more, they started to drift, but stayed friends because of a) hannah's connection to sam, she was likely the one keeping them going, plus nostalgia and b) as they got older, sam got more popular ... but hannah didn't. this is to say, as lightly as possible, sam started to outgrow hannah, but couldn't outgrow their connection.
i also headcanon sam as a lesbian, and i think her feelings for hannah were pretty complicated. i don't think she approved of her crush on mike, i think it actually drove a wedge between sam and hannah, and you can see this because sam openly criticizes this crush on mike post-hannah's death in hannah's private bedroom (of which josh allows only sam to access as the player, not anyone else, meaning these clues are meant for sam to find ... i also need to discuss how cute it is of josh to get hannah a music box for christmas, including the details of it).
combining off my two headcanons that a) sam is the connecting factor that makes this specific friends group come together in conjunction with b) that josh was paralleling to sam the same relationship he saw that she had with his sister, thus creating a 1-for-1 (why sam thought they were closer than they were, mirroring the same way hannah viewed their friendship). i already have that it that this group (the until dawn group) is not josh's main friends group, which i discuss here. i have also discussed all over this blog, particularly here, on why sam and josh have different views of their friendship at the end, thus why she believes he was closer to her than they actually were (ie he was manipulating her). a few good posts to reference would be: here and here (this second link has more links in the post addressing this topic more in full).
while the game states "sam is hannah's best friend" ... it does a poor job showing it. sam barely references hannah post her death, seems to know little of josh's well-being despite them being close, and her stats with everyone are pretty low, almost equal. she needs chris to assert that this is a good idea to have come (in cut dialogue, it is chris that actually convinced her to come, along with her mom suggesting sam date chris). in-game, she needs chris to tell her that josh is okay, that doing this is a good idea, etc, sort of solidifying that he was the reason she came up here at all ... not even josh. ouch. further cut dialogue with jess sort of shows the same thing, more asserting that chris likely is the one that josh was legitimately closest to in an earnest way, also knowing the most about josh's mental health, and that no one else was really that close to him. he became close to sam because, as i have said, she would have never have come up otherwise, and he needed everyone to show up. one person being gone says that something is amiss, even chris, who i have also written about in-detail a lot on why chris is set up to be the way he is in josh's plot.
not at all even going into josh and sam, but more keeping on the lines of hannah and sam, i think they just drifted in a way that hannah was trying to hold onto but was bound to break off eventually.
furthermore, just getting what we see in the prologue, the original game is more cut and dry while the remake spreads this out, and i honestly don't think the remake makes sam look much better, whereas it's funny because they really tried to clean up mike (make him more likable), they fixed the matt and ashley positioning (making her even more innocent, what is she looking at but closed closet doors, but it makes sense because ... matt couldn't have filmed from the closet), jess and mike have a knowing glance (thus affirming jess liked mike at the same time em was dating him and hannah liked him, but it's not okay for hannah to like mike but it is okay for jess? okay?), and so on and so forth. i think the remake does hannah a huge disservice in attempts to make this cast more well-received to the audience. this is why i follow the original note, not the remake note, because it literally makes more sense. you can read why here.
i'm not even considering the cut content here on the above paragraph btw, that opens a whole new can of worms.
a few things that make me question how close hannah and sam were, more that this title is one of the past that they were holding onto, are several things:
a) the drawing is sam's, you cannot convince me she had the drawing stolen from her when she has the notebook in her lap. she knew it was gone. she might have even given it to them. it's suggested that she might have based on that context. no artist just lets their art get snagged and doesn't notice, especially not the portrait of her best friend.
b) she intentionally lowers her voice to a whisper when the others do when they hear hannah coming up the stairs, and she does so in the original, too. she doesn't want hannah to hear her. that would have been a great time to stop the prank. sam could have gone to hannah many times, why did hannah have to go to sam to be saved? she didn't know she needed saving.
c) sam is hanging out with the others, not hannah, not even josh or chris, but specifically the part of the group wanting to prank hannah. she doesn't leave right away, she doesn't tell them off, she doesn't try to get josh or chris or beth ... and definitely not hannah.
d) her late entrance doesn't come off as genuine to me, it comes off as basically too little, too late.
e) sam denying they go after beth and hannah.
and going into the game, again, she never mentions hannah except when she's directly going into hannah's bedroom to find her personal items and comment on them. girl, she is dead, she can't un-crush on mike for you, nor could she clean up. sam, in the game, only cares about getting to the bath. i get that's partially game mechanics to get her where she needs to be, but ... it's just very self-motivating. all final girls, in some way, are self-motivated. that is why they are final girls.
this just bothers me a bit, but ... she also doesn't know that thirty love is the second point ... but josh does? he doesn't play tennis, but he knows this because hannah does. shouldn't sam? i get it's supposed to be funny, but it's also telling to me that she knows so little about something so important to hannah, something so important to hannah that she was basically going pro for it. come on, sam, you had to have been to at least one of her tennis competitions or matches or even played with her, right? as an athlete?
i think their athletic backgrounds is really what kept them together for as long as they were. i see sam and hannah probably having met in that crucial middle school time, but that drift began probably around freshman year, especially into their sophomore.
also, yes, to go in more depth, i have always headcanoned that sam is a lesbian since 2015. i only get this vibe from hayden's performance, if only because beta-sam from the 2011-2013 version actually does have an open crush on josh (which he denies her), but we see this angle axed entirely in the 2015 game. a couple things: a) until dawn was originally, back in its first forms, meant to be a couple's game that couples play, but that changed. b) we have two established couples, one will they / won't they that we control as the audience and two single characters. this is not to isolate the audience, but also because it's not a couple's game anymore. realistically, seeing that we have basically three hetero couples confirmed, doesn't it make sense that the two single ones are either: 1) not interested in someone in that group (but likely someone in their life outside of the game, like another friend, classmate, person in their life they know outside of the gang), or 2) that they are gay. statistically, this also makes sense. again, i don't think this was harped on because life is strange just came out and tells the butterfly effect in a much different way than until dawn, which is meant to be a horror game and not a dating simulator.
so ... this means that both sam and josh are likely gay. i would think this would be a good and well-received thing because of more representation, but that seems to not be the case usually. for josh, i can almost completely confirm this to making the point that, while sony would never allow it, at least some of the texture and other artists on the project did their best to hint this. with sam, again, i just think it makes sense. why not have her be an empowered final girl lesbian? she seems like a girls girl to me, i'm sorry. she's not there for the boys.
for josh, i write him as bi with a heavy male leaning preference, demi with women, and following the branch that "women make him uncomfortable". he has to have a real connection with anyone female presenting to get romantic, but he's more easily attracted (sexually, emotionally, romantically) to men.
but this brings up my last point, which i sort of highlighted at the beginning, and that would be the tension this brings with sam and hannah. i think, at some point, sam did like hannah, but hannah might not have felt the same (more, i doubt sam ever said anything, likely assuming hannah wouldn't be interested, thus dropping it), and that kind of also attributes to their drifting apart.

What do you think Josh’s plans were for Matt in regard to enacting revenge about the prank? And/or their friendship beforehand?
this is such a hard question honestly because it's very clear what he intends to do to chris, ash, and sam, semi-clear what he wants with jess and mike, and then very unclear what he intended for matt and emily.
i won't even bother going over chris, ash, and sam because that's obvious. with jess and mike, he intentionally told mike early about that cabin (something he didn't do in the prototype, i think), meaning he got that idea going right away. he knew likely either a) matt and mike would fight or b) jess and em would fight. likely? he was relying on the latter as a solid bet. isolating mike and jess alone to that cabin imo was to get them into a situation to film them. basically? he was going to make a sex tape and humiliate them in the same vein that hannah was going to be humiliated. watching that video humiliates josh, so i imagine he's really going for extra points on this revenge prank. no expenses spared, no egos unkilled.
matt and emily like ... leave before anything can happen. josh also just gets started without them? it's like the game also kind of forgot tbh and the dlc gives us clarity to them as people and what they were doing and how they get to fire tower and all that, but like, what does it do for us in terms of what josh had planned?? literally nothing. it just explains how they got from a to b that we didn't get to see when the game first first released.
the pig head scene imo was not intended solely for them. it was for anyone. josh had all paths rigged with something scary, unnerving, or some detail or "clue" because he likely assumed all paths might be taken at some point.
for josh, aside from like leading ashley away from the lodge to that area where he "kills himself" (idk how else to say that tbh) in the first "chris choice", this is meant to be somewhat of a contained environment. i think em and matt were supposed to come back to the lodge, likely get separated from ashley and chris, and were probably forced to like ... idk confront each other in some way? fake kill each other? make a choice? like maybe something about her not really being into matt authentically would come up, similar to how they can fight when matt needs to save em from falling before he can jump to save himself? filmed for sure, matt was filming, so there'd likely be some element of that in there. maybe he was going to live stream them jess and mike or something to get em fired up and matt also potentially having that context of "the hug" (confirmed to not be em cheating by devs, if i am recalling right, it was just friendly) that matt can see based on ash's choice with him early in the game?
maybe josh assumed they'd stumble back into sort of being the ones that have to find chris and ashley (and thus also sam), kind of being the ones leading the eventual viewers through to finding chris and ash at the end with the gun scene, sort of terrorizing them along the way, but chris and ash really take that role and that seems intentional, so maybe it was like ... two couples leading the viewers individually throughout the area trying to find each other (and sam, presuming they think mike and jess might be trying to get back to the lodge or are "dead"), then coming to a point of their own "choice game" with a reveal / maybe even in the same area with some initial separation or something? i have no idea tbh i leave this so intentionally vague because we barely get matt interacting with anyone but emily and a bit of jess at the end. i'd say matt's closest connection is probably ashley? outside of em? they seem tight.
while the game kinda forgot about them because the plot of until dawn "takes care of them" for josh, i don't think josh forgot. he had something. i don't think he intended for them to leave, that's for sure, so he had to kinda work with it? by doing nothing, as we can see.
i think matt and josh were pretty neutral tbh, i don't think josh and em ever spent too much solo time together, and i think (as i describe it) he sees them "as friends of my friends are my friends".

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: “ The Bad Batch”-Review
Tumblr media
Seven years since its cancellation and six since the final episodes aired, Star Wars: The Clone Wars makes its final triumphant return on Disney+. Beginning this twelve episode conclusion is a familiar story to fans of the series that has been brought to thrilling new life. It may not be a series best, but The Clone Wars fans will be more than pleased with “The Bad Batch.”
(Review Contains Episode Spoilers)
youtube
The Republic defense of the shipyards of Anaxes have taken a turn for the worse. Separatist forces led by Admiral Trench have updated their tactics and are outpacing clone forces before they can react. Captain Rex has a theory, that Trench’s forces have somehow gotten hold of his battle playbook developed alongside deceased ARC trooper Echo. In the hopes of proving this theory and potentially changing the tide of the campaign, Commander Cody and Rex propose a behind enemy lines stealth mission, which will be assisted by experimental clone force 99, aka “The Bad Batch.”
Wow. On just a purely personal level, watching and reviewing a new episode of The Clone Wars is a surreal experience. Reviewing episodes of the series is how I became a Star Wars blogger and even when we first heard the series was returning in 2018, I still didn’t fully believe that we would be getting new episodes. Yet here I am, in 2020, watching a brand new (sort of) episode of The Clone Wars and the show doesn’t even seem to acknowledge that it’s been gone for over half a decade. Tom Kane voice over, fortune cookie, triumphant ending credits fanfare, it’s all there. In all its goofy, beautiful, and wonderfully strange glory. The Clone Wars is back for one last time. Just wow.
I’ll admit I was initially a little disappointed that one of the three arcs we would be receiving in the final Clone Wars season would be “The Bad Batch.” The unfinished story reels were a fun experience, but as a whole, even with some of the plot twists that will come in later episodes, this arc was never really a favorite of mine. Yes, I love clones and getting to see more clone episodes is always a joy, but I was hungry for new stories and it was hard not to see a redeveloped “Bad Batch” as taking away from any number of other Clone Wars plots that never saw the light of day such as the ever elusive Cad Bane/Boba Fett arc.
Boy was I underestimating just how much this animated glow up would add to this story though. In its final seasons, The Clone Wars was undeniably some of the best looking television on the airwaves and now with production assets that are helped by a robust and experienced studio and seven years of technological advancement, the result is truly stunning. However, it’s not just that the show looks prettier, The Clone Wars is now a more confident and stylistically directed show then it’s ever been.
“The Bad Batch” ends up having two real stars. The obvious one is Dee Bradley Baker who once again gets to flex his voice acting muscles. Baker proved early on into the series’ run that he was more than able to carry entire episodes on his own by voicing ensemble casts of almost a dozen near vocally identical characters and giving them unique personalities and traits. Baker does more heavy lifting here since season four’s classic Umbara story arc and the results are no less impressive.
The second star is director Kyle Dunlevy. Dunlevy worked on many classic episodes of The Clone Wars and “The Bad Batch” may be his most assured stylistically. In addition to the improvement in animation quality, The Clone Wars in its final seasons was really beginning to experiment with creative shot composition and cinematography. I think most often of the stellar sequence in “The Unknown” which follows a single clone officer cowering from a droid invasion. Dunlevy takes this and ups it, delivering outstandingly shot action sequences and even some outstanding tracking sequences that feel more intimate and cinematic than almost anything the series has ever pulled off, or any Star Wars animated show for that matter.
I may be talking a lot about the technical aspects of “The Bad Batch” and that may be that at the end of the day, they prove to be the most impressive parts. As a narrative, “The Bad Batch” is pretty standard Clone Wars fare. Undeniably fun and explosive at times, but there isn’t quite anything here that massively strays outside some of the shows traditional formula.
In a way, it’s interesting to see that many of The Clone Wars’ old storytelling shortcomings are very much on display. The anthologized seasonal structure allowed for many things in the series’ original run such as a sprawling cast and freedom to tell stories of widely different tones and genres. However, The Clone Wars always struggled as a result in being a serialized story. Sure, events from some arcs would undoubtedly influence others, but the sort of stop and start nature of the show lead to many moments where character and story arcs disappear or burst into existence with surprising frequency.
This is very much the case with “The Bad Batch.” At its heart, “The Bad Batch” is two clone related stories. One, a narrative of clones coming to accept diversity within their own community and another in Rex having to grapple with the loss of so many brothers over the war. The second is the most emotionally interesting and engaging as Rex is easily the most war weary character the show has at this point and in a way has always functioned as something of a mouthpiece for the clones as a whole. However, Brent Friedman and Matt Michnnovetz’s script makes some logical swerves here that end up feeling surprisingly hollow. Having Rex mourn his clone brothers makes sense and its direction at some specific clones such as Fives, whom he worked closely with in multiple episodes, feels emotionally appropriate. It’s the focus on Echo and even more oddly, Hevy, that feels odd. Echo and Rex certainly appeared in tandem in multiple episodes but the only time the two really appeared as equals was in the Citadel arc where the character perished. We don’t understand Rex’s emotional connection to Echo because it was never really established in past episodes and we have no cues to fall back upon. The work done here to build context for their relationship, both professionally and emotionally, can’t help but feel a little stilted. Regardless, Baker is still able to sell Rex’s hurt and longing for hope with the right resonance and it helps carry us through these rough patches.
Also, on a very basic level, The Bad Batch are just a really fun bunch of characters. At the moment they fit a little too cleanly into various archetypes: the brutish dumb clone, the cool and badass tracker, the silent sniper, the nerdy tech, but they are fun archetypes. Their designs are creative and vivid. Baker has a hell of a time voicing them. The action with these characters is, as mentioned before, enjoyably creative and visceral. Having classic clones like Jesse and Kix get to butt heads and also grow to appreciate these new clones is a fun and upbeat little story beat for a story that’s otherwise about the lingering trauma of war. Also, Jesse got a promotion and Kix let his hair grow out! Good for them. I hope nothing bad happens to them and their futures remain Sith free.
It’s overall just a joy to have The Clone Wars back, hiccups and all. It’s a special piece of the Star Wars franchise and it’s going to be great to have it in our lives again for a few months. I can’t wait to blast more clankers alongside you all.
Score: B+
