...“Tolkien’s knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Gift Giving is clearly present in The Lord of the Rings. Christopher Tolkien points to the ancient horn given to Meriadoc by the Lady Eowyn as an example of “the word mathum used in Rohan for a ‘treasure’ or a ‘rich gift’” (HoMe XII p. 39, p. 53). 

In the scene that Christopher Tolkien is referencing, Éomer also uses the modern word gift(s) in his address to Meriadoc.

Kings of old would have laden you with gifts that a wain could not bear for your deeds upon the fields of Mundburg; and yet you will take naught, you say, but the arms that were given to you. The reason that Éomer is prepared to shower gifts (mathums) on Merry is that Merry had fulfilled the social obligation placed upon him by entering into King Theoden’s service (R.59; V.2), and by the previous bestowal of mathums of war gear (R.90; V.3). When all the other King’s men had been killed or carried away by their terrified steeds, Merry had indeed come forward to fight with Eowyn as she stood between the Nazgûl and his prey, prepared to avenge Theoden’s death, or die in the attempt (R.142-143; V.6). The one passage I could parse, fluently translate, and give you the footnotes on absolutely cold. I impressed the hell out of a docent and a roomful of tourists.

Sentinel’s Mage Advisor understudies - Mathum and Sariel.

Traveled from Valenwood to Cyrodiil to High Rock and currently settling in Hammerfell.

Hmm, in a series of random midnight thoughts  wall of midnight writing.

Growing up, Lily use to play with Torborn, Nisumar and other of the neighborhood kids but when she started learning about magic, her play group shifted slightly. 

Eventually she started playing with Mathum and Sariel more, although she still brings Torborn along since he is fun to play with. She occasionally still hang with the other kids although avoided Nisumar since he started being mean to her eventually for some reason. 

But she, Mathum and Sariel sometimes out of sight of the houses and guards to practice magic, along with Lily and Torborn trying to teach those two how to climb trees. Mathum and Sariel come from merchant families so they are relatively new here and Lily and Torborn wanted to show them all the top sights ... at least for kids.

The river, that one weird rock formation, the nice lady with sweets, etc. 

Lily, Mathum and Sariel always hang out when they can - to play, to study, etc.

But ... Lily never got to give them a proper goodbye before she left Valenwood.

Lily tries to suppress her memories of Valenwood ... tries not to think too much about all her friends and dad. Those memories come flooding back during winter as a reminder of everything she left behind. As a result she is bad at recognizing old faces.

And for Mathum and Sariel? When they were adults they decided to travel through Cyrodiil, High Rock and Hammerfell looking for opportunities, eventually settling in Sentinel. They don’t know where Lily is (or what she calls herself now for that matter, they just know her as Nalanith). And Azaryn never told them what truly happen to her so that is bit of a sour spot.

They were shocked, surprise to see Azaryn again, having a million questions crossing through their minds - like how much in trouble in the Thalmor is he in now, has he met with Nala again, what about his friends back in Valenwood, etc. Of course not the appropriate time since there were still a few undead outside the city and they are down an attacker since Mathum adamantly refuses to lay a finger on them - and just supporting everyone else. 

Meanwhile, Lily is having a blast chewing through them (like I said she likes fighting) although annoyed she isn’t finding the caster. She wants to take them down, and also ask questions since this is a bit excessive and cannot be working alone. And as Miraak joins her in the search, Neth goes to attend the wounded since someone has to.

Mathum and Sariel do not recognize the strong dark elf as their childhood friend, even when they get face-to-face with her later after she capture the necromancer apprentice. Especially with those odd eyes of her ... well they are odd for mortals, not for dragons though. 

Although she be busy getting into a little argument with Neth over her just jumping into the fry instead of I don’t know asking the local what’s happening before jumping in. Lily does not care - the dead should stay dead and this was obviously a problem, especially since only a fraction of Redguards would attacking their undead ancestors. 

But they get a proper introduction later. Although Lily recognize them once she heard their names but she had to keep under control until they have a bit more privacy. Cannot be freaking out on top of a wall city with a necromancer capture and a dragon sitting on the wall. The dragon really wanted to make a good impression on his thuri after all.

Ok some late night headcanons I want to write down before I forget.

And it got long so yeah ... whoops.

So yeah my dovahkiin goes off to Hammerfell, initially on a diplomatic mission or coming along said mission more or less and necromancers. Because Hammerfell can never have too many necromancers out and mucking about.

Lily sets her crew to take care of it personally, although its a bit broken since her original gang are mostly back in Skyrim keeping down the fort and helping the Vestige with some calculations. 

So Lily is traveling with Torborn, Nisumar, Sariel, Mathum and one Ash’abah tribesman to got check out some ruins while Neth, Azaryn, Miraak and three other Ash’abah check out a potential fort elsewhere. 

So while in the ruin, where Sariel’s aunt or something is hiding with a project of some lich since Sariel’s mother side of the family are a bunch of well hidden necromancers and Sariel’s mother lack magic so she was never included in the club per say. Naturally none of her friends know any of this and for the most part while she rather them alive, if they get in the way or don’t listen to her she will end them. 

Lily, meanwhile, does not really trust any of her companions outside of Torborn and Nisumar. Honestly her thought process is that as a mere ‘representative’ she can get close to knowing what the necromancers want and since necromancers worship Mannimarco, Mannimarco wants to end the veil between Nirn and realms of Oblivion once more to garner greater influence before the eventual resealing because this has not happen before or anything, no not at all. For that the necromancers want the closest thing to Akatosh once more - which would be the Last Dragonborn which Lily could ‘summon’ so that’s why Sariel travels with her. Lily his this staff she basically trapped to explode if you cast any magic into it, useful as a throwing weapon as well then making it go boom. 

But as the delve, Sariel realize she must separate the staff from Lily and take care of Lily since she is the biggest threat at the moment. So in a darker portion of the ruin, Sariel summons a few bone fiends to surprise push Lily into a pit fall trap - because corpses are useful even if they were her friends (mangle corpse of someone powerful is a waste), stole the staff, paralysis the rest of the group, injured Mathum and made a dash deeper into the ruin. 

Lily is disappointed it was her own childhood friend but she did silent shout Gol Hah Dov to listen to her thoughts and whatever she said to the rest of the crew. Otherwise Lily pulled out some gloves rigged for climbing to slow her fall, which she does, right before it drops into an open space. She orientate herself so that she can be somewhat hidden yet ready to attack, shout Laas Nah Nir to check her surroundings and wait to surprise attack Sariel in return and kill her since she is indeed a traitor through and through. 

So as Sariel enters the massive cavern she shouts to her aunt they have ‘guests’ worthy of interrogation and used as hostage; or mere specimens, follow by asking how’s the new corpse coming along. While her aunt is gleeful at the though of some ... fresh specimens, no body has yet enter the cavern. Sariel says she will worry about that later and starts to try using the staff to summon the fable Last Dragonborn but she is having issues. As she struggles her aunt comes along to see what she is doing wrong. 

The crew arrives to stop Sariel as she already ranted why she is doing this and whatnot while they were chasing her, Lily already listening in due to intrusive powers, and Sariel could not delay them long enough. So as Sariel tries to point the staff at them, Lily jumps down, spell prepare in hand, strikes Sariel in the heart and has another spell attack her aunt, damaging but not killing her. Lily cast a spell to mitigate the fall damage as she eyes the aunt and the lich projection who soon disappears after giving a command to kill them all.

Sariel is ... not quite dead as she is know a spcetre, although she really can’t do anything other than relay information due to her amulet so she goes and hides to watch as Lily, basically kill her aunt.

Although Lily does not know what to do with the spectre form but the Ash’abah knows exactly how to handle the situation and entraps them and eventually chase down Sariel as well. Spectres can be trapped in vials to prevent damage and information going into the wrong hands. Lily sneakily steals some papers of them before they leave and reunite with the others. 

Honestly how this whole situation is working out is rather convoluted and quite frankly I don’t care since this is fun. Especially since I sorta also want to bring in the Five Companions once more as capture spirits from their resting place to be in utter agony ... and so Varen can see what a dragonborn can actually do. But none of this is set in stone.
