i don't know how to put this into words yet so it makes complete sense so bear with me while i gather my thoughts, but...
i think a lot of the criticism i have re: decisions bioware made with veilguard are (at least in part) the company's direct responses to the (in my eyes) often unfounded and disproportionate hate that inquisition received from the fanbase.
#not the chosen one? check#even though the inquisitor is literally a subversion of that trope#the factions not being racegated even though it hurts the lore? check#sanding away the sharp edges of the world and its factions? check#bc writers writing abt terrible things means they endorse them somehow#i have to think abt this more & there are other things i could list too but hmm#i think a lot of the 'problems' in veilguard are direct responses to the mindless and in parts extremely idiotic criticisms that#inquisition received#and i think in the light of veilguard#inquisition now will be praised a lot more#just like da2 suddenly became the most game to ever when inquisition was newly released#and dao after da2 came out#it's the cycle of the bioware fandom unfortunately#i wish people were mindful when they engage with media bc veilguard is at least in part a product of that terrible behaviour#regurgitating criticisms ppl have heard from three other ppl before them instead of engaging with the source material and/or thinking#abt it more deeply#the hate/negativity circlejerk following each new game etc#text: personal#vg: dragon age 4#series: dragon age#fandom critical

I have been meaning to talk about how accomplished Jun is though. She:
is such a powerful psychic that her clan apparently considered her a 'chosen one'
is literally such a strong fighter that she is able to suppress projecting her aura - something only the most powerful are able to do - which is why animals feel safe to approach her
fought well enough in the second tournament that Kazuya still thinks about her strength 22 years later in the story mode and waxes lyrical about it in his character ending (❓ on if she actually faced him though)
defeated Devil while pregnant ✔️ (only the half, but still counts)
has the survival skills to not only survive but thrive far from civilization
defeated Ogre ✔️
achieved the above via drawing power from sacred ground, something the average person obviously cannot do
is implied to have Yatagarasu guiding her per one of her intros
#in another world she's a shonen anime series main character let's be honest.#regarding the ❓ i have Opinions™ but tried to keep this factual.#being real with you the number of ppl on the planet that she couldn't school in a fight is in single digits for sure.#also raw strength aside i do feel kaz prob also deeply admires her spirituality#she has attained a non-material fulfillment that culturally is quite significant and as i said in a prior post--#--is considered a measure of one's quality as a person and the value that you bring into the lives of those you love.#i did not mention the 'kazama blood' or potential link with 'angel' bc rn those are not clearly defined#also being born with special blood isn't something 'earned' rly so while it matters™ it doesn't belong on an 'accomplishment' list imo.#i love that she's so strong and well rounded in her own right and not just 'the mom' or a distressed damsel

ohhhh how I miss the times of going to the library looking for books with cool-looking fantasy covers only to find the most fucked up lore inside that would leave me consumed by fascination and sometimes nightmares for months only to completely forget the entirety of the plot years later

#Q&A#I think this is the third time someone's asked me my thoughts on Saavik#which is interesting since I thought she was a fairly niche character - is there just something about her that makes people go#'Oh Bea would like this guy'#Or is it just that I'm on the more 'underrated yet prominent Vulcan' side of tumblr with my Tuvokposting??#anon#all I know about Saavik comes from other people who draw art about her I haven't seen any of the actual material#so I do like her but I don't have actual personal substance in my liking of her!#I think she's in one of the movies? I'd watch it but 'Watching ENT for T'Pol Knowledge' is kind of next on my 'Do It For Her' list#and has been for several months so you know - it's hard for me. When I could just be rewatching Voyager v_v#ENT really is so tough to watch. It's really hard going from VOY to '3 white guys and 1 sexy girl' and the whole series feels like army#propaganda somehow...like uh 'top gun' or something. every day when i wake up i say to myself “dykeyuu you are not purchasing any sanrio merchandise today” but then i find the deal of the century……..
#like. i only buy it if i know for sure ill NEVER find it at that price again#2007 corduroy keroppi that literally doesn’t exist on the internet? $16#i came across it by chance and it took me hours to find evidence that anyone else had ever owned one#found a chococat one too from the same series but it’s pricier…#but it’s the only one listed anywhere that i can find so. perhaps#sike i found one in the philippines there’s TWO corduroy chococats on the internet#i mean there’s literally one reddit thread i could find from years ago confirming that this series existed#and it’s only got like two commenters who only vaguely remembered the series#and a handful of worthpoint entries confirming that a couple of each of them had sold on ebay at some point#all the other sanrio corduroy plushies i could find were from other series#there’s a hello kitty and my melody from the same year but it wasn’t the same series#both series were rereleases in 2007 and the original release year for hk/mm was earlier than cc/k#20in 2012 fiesta keroppi? $40 when he usually goes for $100+#(this includes shipping…)#was devastated to find an etsy listing for the 2010 limited keroppi build a bear for $85 that had already sold…#the next cheapest one of those is like $140#and dont get me fucking started on chococat#no build a bear should EVER go for $500#like be serious. maybe it was limited edition 14 years ago but it’s still a damn stuffed animal#manifesting they rerelease the original sanrio build a bears to beat the price gougers into submission#the intersection of two special interests: sanrio and buying things from people who don’t know what they have#throwback to the 1993 keroppi squeaky toy that i thrifted for 25 cents#just looked it up to see and i found the exact same one but only on worthpoint#he used to be a keychain… mine is just the little guy with no chain#comparable one from the same year same size/material etc just different design goes for $20+#context i refuse to make a worthpoint account and pay them just to see what things sold for on ebay they can kiss my ass#me when i need to infodump but gf is at work and has already heard like half of this

ok to answer this, i've had to narrow down my options to only young adult fiction. if i included all the middle grade, adult, graphic novels, comics, manga and poetry i have read, i would truly not know how to start (and this still felt impossible)
with that let's begin!
six of crows duology by leigh bardugo - this will always be my #1. my ultimate comfort read. these fantastic characters pulled me rough a really rough time in my life, where constantly reread these books to keep me grounded. inej ghafa the character you are. i love my crime found family
the other side of perfect by mariko turk - this book fully revitalised a love of reading for me after uni. i sat down one day and basically finished it in one sitting, just could not put it down
legendborn series by tracey deonn - worldbuilding! character development! the magic!!! all TOP NOTCH. so incredibly excited for book three, i might have to reread the first two to prepare
the lesbiana's guide to catholic school + the luis ortega surival club by sonora reyes - holyyyy shit. um basically after tlgtcs, which became my favourite read that year, i decided i would read whatever sonora reyes ever wrote. both books are FANTASTIC, cannot recommend them enough.
the gilded wolves trilogy by roshani chokshi - divine. i love fantasy heist novels and these were phenomenal. the ending absolutely got to me
cannot separate last night at the telegraph club by malinda lo or i feed her to the beast (and the beast is me) by jamison shea. both books changed me and made me stare into the distance when i finished.

one thing i’m really realizing about tv-watching lately is that i’m reaching a point where i can’t hold all these shows in my head. it takes so long to have a new season come out that i’ve forgotten all the details of what happened in the previous season unless it’s a show i’ve watched multiple times, which it’s usually not. then i feel like i’m doing wrong by the show by not rewatching the previous season(s) so i can watch the new one as the creators intended it to be watched, with all the emotional threads from the previous season getting picked up and returned to. like, i want those things to HIT the way they’re intended to, but usually they don’t for me in this tv-watching model because it’s been so long that i don’t remember the details of what’s going on or how i was feeling about everything going on on the show where it last left off. i can’t shake the feeling that i need to rewatch the whole show before the new season so it can register with me correctly ... but there are only so many hours in a day, i can’t do that for every single show i watch that drops a new season every year or every couple of years!
tl;dr this is why i am dreaming of majorly cutting down on the amount of tv i watch. my brain just can’t take it in this current format! there are already so many new seasons of shows i loved that i just haven’t seen for this reason. i find myself actively craving, like, limitations to my viewing so i don’t feel like my brain is going to explode. often i daydream of canceling all my streaming services except pbs passport and getting really into antiques road show and this old house.
#being a tv person in the 2020s babe!!!!!!#like -- i loved the first two seasons of servant SO MUCH#i was crazy about it#but then we tried to pick up s3 and i couldn't remember what had happened before#so everything felt off#(i think i might actually start servant again from the beginning since there will be two new seasons waiting for me at this point)#and i never watched recent seasons of you or the flight attendant or harley quinn or russian doll or so many more i could list#just because ... i can't remember!!!!!#currently having a bit of a tough time with his dark materials s3 for this reason#also rewatching 30 rock has me so aware of how much i miss when a show would be part of most of your year#like -- there's the 3/4 month break over the summer#but for most of your year you're getting new content with those characters#man i miss that!#that was really special and i really feel the loss of it#it was so much easier to follow a series that way#anyway this has been my overwhelmed tv ramble!#goodnight!!#dollsome's deep thoughts

feel like ive gotta get some people in on the abarat hype-train, it has 21 non-crossover fanfics total on ao3, clive barker did not personally paint 500 character and place designs for his own currently 1200 page+ fantasy series to not have more respect
