The whole reason I got into oolong was because when I stopped being able to drink coffee I was pretty depressed because the routine and care put into a cappuccino was so sacred to me and had been for a long time in my life as a ritual every day with myself so I just sort of latched onto matcha since it was becoming popular to carry in shops around 2019-2020 and really felt saved by being able to have a new ritual in place and for a while it was really great cause I love the health benefits and the intricacy of making it but then I sort of hit a wall again this spring where I've been feeling really hungry for closeness with my taiwanese heritage and I was trying to figure out how to incorporate it more rather than a Japanese tea, so I ended up just googling what the most harvested tea in Taiwan is and they are well known for their oolong! But I like tea lattes in the morning which is not a popular thing for oolong or how it's typically served (it's not available like that in any shop near me, matcha is definitely still king) so when I finally found a Taiwanese oolong that was ground into a powder form I got it for myself hoping to make it into my new sacred ritual every morning and fell in love with this robust taste instantly and it's made me feel so close to Taiwan and my mom and myself and brought me endless joy just waking up knowing I'll get to make myself a drink that's from my own heritage and something I've found a very personal connection with rather than just hopping onto a trend
Oolong has been around for centuries obviously, but now I get to make a home for it in my own life as a barista and although it's not traditionally drank as a tea latte, it feels like the perfect and very personal merge between who I am as someone who's dedicated themselves to latte art and milk steaming bar culture, who's transitioned to only drinking tea, and is Taiwanese American! It all fits so well and I hold it incredibly dear to my heart.

moringa powder is amazing for weight loss
okay normally i dont buy into natural remedies and stuff because most of them feel like scams but my local health foods store had moringa powder on offer a while ago and i decided to give it a little shot cuz it was £1.50
it is incredible. im not gonna sit here and tell you its magic and you will lose 20kg instantly while still pigging out on mcdonalds. but i take 1tsp morning and night, i mix it in with my green tea and a little honey cuz it tastes quite funky (a little like matcha but more bitter and vegetably) and it completely gets rid of any hunger pains or cravings i have
like do your own research on it if you're interested, it has tons of health benefits outside of wl, aids collagen production, good for hair and skin, can boost energy, joint health etc. some studies say it can also reduce fat formation and enhance fat breakdown but take that with a pinch of salt. if you are at all considering it though i would 100% recommend it

Unveiling the Green Marvel: Exploring the Myriad Health Benefits of Matcha
In recent years, matcha has surged in popularity as a revered health elixir, captivating health enthusiasts and coffee connoisseurs alike. This vibrant green powdered tea, celebrated for its rich history and ceremonial significance in Japanese culture, has transcended traditional boundaries to become a global wellness phenomenon. With its distinctive flavor and an array of purported health benefits, matcha has earned a special place in the pantheon of superfoods.
The Matcha Marvel Unveiled:
Derived from the same Camellia sinensis plant as green tea, matcha is distinguished by its unique cultivation and preparation methods. Before harvest, matcha leaves are shaded from sunlight, prompting an increase in chlorophyll production and amino acid content. After harvesting, the leaves are meticulously stone-ground into a fine powder, preserving their nutritional potency.
Unraveling the Health Benefits:
Rich in Antioxidants: Matcha boasts a formidable arsenal of antioxidants, including catechins, notably epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which neutralize free radicals and combat oxidative stress. Research suggests that EGCG may offer protective effects against chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular ailments.
Enhanced Mental Clarity and Focus: Unlike the jittery highs and subsequent crashes associated with coffee consumption, matcha provides a sustained release of energy due to its synergistic blend of caffeine and L-theanine. This unique combination promotes alertness and cognitive function while fostering a sense of calmness and concentration.
Supports Weight Management: Studies indicate that matcha may bolster metabolism and aid in fat oxidation, making it a favored ally in weight management endeavors. Moreover, its high fiber content promotes satiety, curbing cravings and promoting feelings of fullness.
Promotes Skin Health: The abundance of antioxidants in matcha contributes to its skin-rejuvenating properties, shielding against UV damage, reducing inflammation, and promoting collagen synthesis. Regular consumption may impart a radiant complexion and combat premature aging.
Fortifies Immune Function: The immune-boosting potential of matcha stems from its polyphenol content, which bolsters the body's defense mechanisms against pathogens and enhances overall resilience.
Navigating Potential Considerations:
While matcha offers a plethora of health benefits, it's prudent to exercise moderation and be mindful of potential side effects. Excessive consumption may lead to caffeine-related symptoms such as insomnia, jitteriness, and gastrointestinal distress. Additionally, individuals with sensitivities to caffeine or those on certain medications should exercise caution.
Matcha: A Versatile Wellness Ally:
From traditional tea ceremonies to trendy cafes, matcha has seamlessly integrated into diverse culinary landscapes, lending its vibrant hue and distinctive flavor to an array of beverages and culinary creations. Whether enjoyed as a soothing latte, incorporated into smoothie bowls, or infused into savory dishes, matcha transcends boundaries to captivate palates and nourish bodies.
Final Thoughts:
As the wellness zeitgeist continues to evolve, matcha remains a steadfast emblem of vitality and rejuvenation, revered for its unparalleled health benefits and culinary versatility. Whether sipped ceremonially or savored as a culinary delight, matcha serves as a potent reminder of the profound connection between nourishment, culture, and holistic well-being. Embrace the green marvel and embark on a journey of vitality and renewal with each sip of this esteemed elixir.

3. History of Matcha Ceremony Sets
The origins of the Japanese tea ceremony can be traced back to the 9th century, when Buddhist monks brought tea from China to Japan. Over time, the ceremony evolved into a highly ritualized practice that emphasized mindfulness, simplicity, and respect for nature. The use of a matcha ceremony set became an essential part of this practice, as it allowed for precise measurements, careful preparation, and a beautiful presentation of the tea.
Tumblr media
4. The Significance of Matcha in Japanese Culture
In Japanese culture, matcha is more than just a beverage. It is a symbol of hospitality, respect, and harmony. The tea ceremony itself is a way of connecting with others and with nature, and the use of a matcha ceremony set is a way of honoring tradition and craftsmanship.
5. How to Use a Matcha Ceremony Set
Using a matcha ceremony set requires a bit of practice and patience, but it can be rewarding.
Here are the basic steps to prepare matcha using a ceremony set:
Heat the water: Start by boiling fresh, filtered water and letting it cool for a few minutes until it reaches around 175°F to 180°F. This temperature is ideal for matcha, as it preserves the delicate flavors and aromas.
Prepare the bowl: Place the tea bowl on a flat surface and add a small amount of warm water to warm up the bowl. Discard the water and dry the bowl with a clean cloth.
Measure the matcha: Use the bamboo scoop to measure around 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into the tea caddy.
Add the water: Pour a small amount of the hot water into the tea bowl and whisk it vigorously with the bamboo whisk to create a smooth paste. This helps to dissolve the matcha powder and prevent lumps.
Whisk the tea: Add the rest of the hot water (around 2 to 3 ounces) to the tea bowl and use the bamboo whisk to whisk the tea vigorously in a back-and-forth motion until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
Serve the tea: Use the bamboo scoop to transfer the tea from the tea bowl to a teacup or small bowl, and enjoy!
Tumblr media
6. Tips for a Successful Matcha Ceremony
Preparing matcha using a ceremony set can be a bit intimidating at first, but with a little practice and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful and memorable experience. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Use high-quality matcha: The quality of the matcha powder is crucial for the taste and texture of the tea. Look for a ceremonial-grade matcha that is fresh, vibrant, and free of any additives or fillers.
Use fresh, filtered water: The quality of the water can also affect the taste of the tea. Use fresh, filtered water that is free of any impurities or minerals that can affect the taste.
Pay attention to the temperature: The temperature of the water is important for bringing out the best flavors and aromas in the matcha. Use a thermometer or kettle with a temperature setting to ensure the water is at the right temperature.
Practice your whisking technique: Whisking the tea is an art form that takes practice and patience. Experiment with different whisking patterns and techniques to find what works best for you.
Be present and mindful: The tea ceremony is about more than just drinking tea. It is a way of connecting with others, nature, and yourself. Take the time to savor each sip of tea and appreciate the beauty of the moment.
7. Choosing the Right Matcha Ceremony Set
When choosing a matcha ceremony set, there are several factors to consider:
Material: Matcha ceremony sets can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, bamboo, and lacquerware. Choose a set that is made from high-quality materials that are durable and easy to clean.
Style: Matcha ceremony sets come in many different styles and designs, from traditional to modern. Choose a set that reflects your personal style and tastes.
Quality: Look for a set that is made by a reputable manufacturer and is designed for ceremonial use. Avoid sets that are cheaply made or are intended for decorative purposes only.

Store the set properly
Keep your matcha ceremony set in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or moisture. Avoid storing it in airtight containers, as this can cause mold or mildew to develop.
Replace the set as needed: Over time, the whisk and tea bowl may become worn or damaged. Replace them as needed to ensure that your matcha ceremony set continues to perform well.

In this article, we will take a closer look at matcha and caffeine, and the question on everyone's mind: is matcha stronger than caffeine?

1. What is Matcha?
Matcha is a type of Japanese green tea that has gained massive popularity in recent years due to its health benefits and unique taste. It is made by finely grinding shade-grown green tea leaves into a bright green powder, which is then whisked with hot water to create a frothy, delicious beverage.
2. The Origin of Matcha
The history of matcha can be traced back to ancient China, where it was first used as a medicinal herb. Later, Buddhist monks brought it to Japan, where it became a staple in traditional tea ceremonies. Today, Japan is the world's leading producer of matcha, and it's consumed worldwide.
3. Matcha vs. Caffeine: The Basics
Matcha contains caffeine, just like coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages. However, the amount of caffeine in matcha is generally lower than in coffee but higher than in traditional green tea. A typical serving of matcha contains about 70 mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee contains 95 mg.
Tumblr media
images source
4. Matcha and Caffeine in the Body
When you drink matcha, the caffeine in it is absorbed into your bloodstream and travels to your brain, where it blocks the action of adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and suppresses arousal. This is why caffeine makes you feel alert and awake.
5. Matcha's L-Theanine Content
Matcha contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which is not found in coffee. L-theanine has been shown to promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.
6. How Does L-Theanine Affect Caffeine?
When you consume L-theanine with caffeine, it enhances the cognitive effects of caffeine, such as alertness, focus, and attention, while reducing the jitteriness and anxiety often associated with caffeine. This is why many people feel more relaxed and focused after drinking matcha than after drinking coffee.
7. The Benefits of Matcha
Matcha has been associated with numerous health benefits, including:
Improved focus and cognitive function
Increased energy and endurance
Reduced stress and anxiety
Boosted metabolism and weight loss
Lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels
Improved heart health
Enhanced immune function
Tumblr media
8. The Downsides of Caffeine
While caffeine has many benefits, it can also have some negative effects, such as:
Jitters and nervousness
Insomnia and
9. The Downsides of Matcha
While matcha has many benefits, it also has some potential downsides, such as:
Lead contamination: Since matcha comes from the entire tea leaf, it may contain higher levels of lead than regular tea. To avoid this, it's best to purchase high-quality matcha from a reputable source.
Caffeine sensitivity: Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, and may experience side effects such as jitters, nervousness, and insomnia when consuming matcha.
Expense: High-quality matcha can be expensive, and may not be affordable for everyone.
10. Matcha vs. Coffee: Which is Better?
Whether matcha or coffee is better for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Matcha contains less caffeine than coffee but has more L-theanine, which can help reduce caffeine jitters and promote relaxation. Coffee, on the other hand, may provide a stronger caffeine boost, but without the potential relaxation benefits of L-theanine.
11. Who Should Drink Matcha Instead of Coffee?
Matcha may be a better choice for people who are sensitive to caffeine, as well as those who want a more sustained energy boost without the crash that often comes with coffee. Matcha may also be a good choice for people who want to reap the potential relaxation benefits of L-theanine.
12. How to Brew Matcha
Brewing matcha is simple. Here's how to do it:
Boil water and let it cool to around 175°F.
Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a bowl.
Add a small amount of hot water to the bowl and whisk the matcha in a "W" shape until it becomes frothy.
Add the remaining hot water to the bowl and whisk again until the matcha is fully dissolved and frothy.
13. The Best Time to Drink Matcha
The best time to drink matcha is in the morning or early afternoon, as it can provide an energy boost without disrupting sleep. However, some people may prefer to drink matcha later in the day as a substitute for coffee or other caffeinated beverages.
14. How Much Matcha Should You Drink?
The recommended daily dose of matcha is 1-2 teaspoons or about 2-4 grams. However, it's essential to listen to your body and adjust your intake based on your individual needs and sensitivity to caffeine.

Tumblr media
15. Conclusion
So, is matcha stronger than caffeine? The answer is yes and no. Matcha contains less caffeine than coffee but has more L-theanine, which can enhance the cognitive effects of caffeine while reducing the jitters and anxiety often associated with it. Ultimately, whether matcha or coffee is better for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you're looking for a more sustained energy boost without the crash, or if you're sensitive to caffeine, matcha may be a better choice for you.

Thanks to doing my research I haven't really experienced a lot of culture shock after coming to Japan, but one of the things that just slowly unraveled is how different tea culture is here, and I'm not talking about tea ceremony
So in Austria you can get tea bags anywhere and most of the tea is herbal, fruit, or black tea. You can buy pre-made ice tea, which is basically sugar water, or "tea" that is water that smells faintly of whatever is supposed to be infused, and every restaurant has tea on the menu (and unless it's an Asian restaurant you're probably just getting tea bags)
In Japan I *can* get actual tea leaves in supermarkets (mostly limited to black and green tea), and most cheaper teas (i.e. tea bags) come with instructions for hot brewing and cold brewing. Because turns out if you ask your tea anywhere you'll mostly get cold tea. Which isn't bad at all. Every konbini or vending machine has several kinds of unsweetened cold tea you can just get for like 100 yen per liter and it's great especially when it's hot outside and you need some barley tea (which is so good btw). But if you like your tea hot, like me (I like my tea hot, is what I'm saying), it feels kinda weird that restaurants only have the cold kind (unless you specifically ask for it and they don't just have it pre-made). Haven't been to many cafes yet because poor, but I assume your chances of getting hot tea are better there
The thing that actually bothers me, though, is how surprisingly hard it is to get oolong tea. Not the cold kind you can get anywhere, the actual tea leaves, because oolong tea benefits a lot when you use the leaves. The thing about oolong tea is the leaves are curled up and you can reuse them a few times in a row and as the leaves unfurl the taste changes. I love that about it, and you're never getting this effect with tea bags or like tea powder (which already feels kinda weak if it's not like, matcha, tbqh). And when I looked up where to buy oolong tea leaves, I learned that they are surprisingly hard to find and relatively expensive, even though Taiwan, where it's from, it's like, right there (it's actually still pretty far away, but relatively speaking). So when I tell people at work, coworkers or customers, that I love hot oolong tea, they're like, hot??? Because it may as well be a completely different thing
