All right, here's some of the photos I took in Kerikeri! That's where I spent a few months working, and most of the photos have people's faces in them so I'm not gonna post those.

All things considered, it was a very good time, but rather uneventful compared to the last two months.

These are not in chronological order at all. That got messed up while doing a backup, apparently.

These include photos from kerikeri, Matauri Bay and the giant sand dunes up north.

29 February 2024 - Elise and I woke up in Elise's tent, on the beach at Matauri Bay. We didn't want to get out of bed, since we'd arrived at camp so late the night before. We finally got out of the tent, and I had my first peak at what Matauri Bay looks like in the daylight. It was GORGEOUS. As I looked out from the tent, I saw the ocean and the waves gently crashing on the beach. I saw islands only a short distance (one or two kilometers) from shore, protecting the bay from big waves. The water was a beautiful turquoise blue and very clear - the visibility underwater is going to be SOOOOO good! Elise and I walked to the general shop and asked about the tides. High tide was only a couple hours away, and Elise said diving is best the couple hours before high tide, but that we didn't want to be in the water for very long after high tide because of the currents. So, we got our wetsuits on, geared up with our float boats, masks, snorkels, dive weights, and fins, and we walked the short distance from our campsite to the beach. We walked down the sand and right into the water.

We swam from the beach out a little ways to the first reef. Elise found a hole, and she dove down to investigate. She came back up and said that she thinks there's a crayfish in the hole, but it's a deep hole. She asked me to come pull her out if I see her legs/fins crossed. She dove down, and her entire body disappeared into this hole that she'd found; I could only see the tips of her fins. After several seconds, I saw her wriggling backwards out of the hole, and then she swam up to me with a crayfish in her hand! She measured the crayfish, and it was on the small side, but still big enough to catch. She put the crayfish, alive, in her float boat. We swam around a little more, exploring the reef's edge, on the hunt for some big fish. I was having trouble diving down and equalizing my ears; my sinuses were kind of stuffed up, and the congestion was making it impossible to equalize. Elise dove down to 12 meters, and lied on the sea floor. She waited for several seconds while lying prone to make herself look small, and then she lifted up her speargun, and speared a fish! It was so cool to watch her from the surface, looking down at her while comfortably breathing through my snorkel. She was so smooth and casual with her movements; she looked really natural and at home swimming and hunting. She caught a butterfish! She found several goatfish that looked big enough to catch. She pointed them out to me and said that I could try to shoot one. These goatfish were sitting on the ocean floor, about 12 meters deep. I tried several times to dive down, but I couldn't go more than 3 or 4 meters deep because I couldn't equalize my ears. I started getting a little frustrated. I told Elise that I wasn't able to dive down to get a goatfish. She swam down and speared one, and she put it in her float boat. We swam out a ways until we started getting hammered by the big swells, and so we turned around to head back to the beach. On our swim back, we saw several eagle rays. Every once-in-a-while, Elise would casually pop down, spear a fish, and put it in her float boat.

28 February 2024 - Woke up at Elise's house around 9:30 am. She came home from work for a lunch break. I made us some fruit smoothies, and then I cooked us up some lunch, which, when it started, I had no clue what I was going to cook. I chopped up an onion and sautéed onion and garlic, then added cauliflower and cabbage. I still had no idea what I was cooking, I was just blindly cooking veggies with no plan or future thoughts whatsoever. I found some tortillas and hummus, and all of a sudden, the meal unfurled. - wraps! I fried up some eggs, spread some hummus onto the tortillas, threw the veggies and the eggs inside and wrapped them up. The wraps were pretty darn good, if I don't say so myself!

After lunch, I loaded Elise's car with all the gear that Elise had packed for our trip. Elise left to go back to work. I cleaned up the dishes then drove the motorbike back to Henderson. I had just enough time to give myself a quick haircut (Arnie helped out, apparently I had missed a few spots! 😂🤷🤦)

I had barely enough time to hop in the shower and pack before Elise showed up. I dumped my stuff in Elise's car, I hopped in the driver's seat, and we were off! I drove us to Whangerei, where we stopped for dinner at 8:30 pm. This was kind of our first date. Not really, because we'd had champagne at The Gap a few days earlier. But this was our first time going to a restaurant and ordering food, so it felt kind of like a first date.

It was so much fun! We just laughed and chatted the whole time. I ordered a vegetarian meal, which was pretty good - I had the cauliflower mole something. Elise got some sort of meat enchiladas, and holy tacos, it was DELICIOUS. Elise definitely won. No contest. When it was time to go, I drove us the rest of the way from Whangerei to Matauri Bay. When we got to Matauri Bay, it was very late. I think we arrived at Matauri Bay at midnight, and then we set up our tent. We walked the 20 meters from our campsite to the beach, and had a quick glimpse of the scene in the moonlight before going back to the tent and crashing out.

I'm grateful to Arnie for helping me out with the haircut. I'm grateful to Elise for all the preparation and coordination and packing and gear for the Matauri Bay trip. I'm grateful to have had such good company for the drive. I'm grateful for our first date. I'm grateful for camping on a beautiful beach in the moonlight.
