s#93【オリジナルカルタを作ろう!】
Title: “Let's make an original Karuta!”
*Karuta is the Japanese name for a card game introduced to Japan by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. There are two main types: Uta-Garuta (poem cards) and Iroha Karuta (easier form of Karuta for children).*
In today’s program, they are going to elaborate their own version of the Japanese card game “karuta” to play it in a future livestream. Kaoru says the 3 of them have to think about the content of the cards, and make around 46 cards. Joe doesn’t seem very pleased with that as each of them would have to do about 15 cards and he thinks that’s hard. Tasai thinks is very interesting,
It seems they are going to do Iroha karuta, which is similar to the ABC game. A sentence is read in Japanese, and the player, with the cards scattered, must find the card that matches the first Japanese syllable of that sentence before the opponent. They discuss about which theme they are going to use for the karuta, Kaoru thinks it should be “The Freedom of Expression” Karuta but Joe suggest to make it “Kaoru Karuta”. Kaoru thinks 46 cards about him is too much. In the end, as they are already in program #93 they think they could do it about The Freedom of Expression.
They start doing some sentences like:
“Ro”: Roke mo meibutsu (Localization is a speciality), making a reference to the episodes they film outdoors.
“Ne”: Negi o kakiatsumete itai (I want to gather up green onions), making a reference to the episode they went to eat at a chinese restaurant.
“Ri” Rinyūaru shite zekkōchō no The Freedom of ekusupuresshon (The Freedom of Expression is in great shape after renewal)
Kaoru adds “Ki”: Kimyōna koe ga ( a strange voice) and they laugh remembering the episode in which an odd voice could be heard.
Tasai suggests “ Uchū“ (Space, universe) for “u” as a reference to the U.F.O. and Tokyo Sports.
Joe adds “Shi”, “Jōro no namae wa Yoshio desu” (Watering can's name is Yoshio) I think it’s a reference to the episode they went to get Joe a plant.
Kaoru adds “ke”; Kēki to kifu wain wa imaichi (Cake and noble rot wine are not good) in reference to the episode they tried to mix different foods.
They laugh and remember it was a suggestion from God. They still have many to do, as it is 15 per person and they think is really hard and try to remember things that happened during the episodes to make more cards.
Kaoru adds: “Ma”: Machi chūka ikitai na (I want to go to Chinatown), it’s a reference to the episode they went out to eat Chinese food.
Joe gets the “i”: Itsuka wa ibento mo shitai The Freedom of Expression (Someday I want to do an event of The Freedom of Expression)
Tasai gets the “ha” doing a reference to Kaoru’s favourite baseball team: Hanshin mō chotto ganbatte yo (Hanshin, keep trying just a little more).
Kaoru adds the “su”, teasing Joe: Sugu wasureru Joe-san (Joe, who forgets everything soon)
God seems to say something but it feels like his voice is speed up. Then, Joe gets back at Kaoru with the “ka”: Kaoru-san no rokkōoroshi wa itsu no hi desu ka? (When is Kaoru going to sing Rokko Oroshi?)
After a few seconds of speed up program, Joe gets the “to”: Tokyo Sports-san futoppara! Purezento kikaku mata dōzo! (Tokyo Sports is so generous! Present plan again!)
Tasai does the “wa”: Wasurete ne jai-ko no koto wa (Forget about Jaiko, ok?). Tasai got dressed as Jaiko for Halloween and he was really embarrased about it lol.
Kaoru adds “ni”: Nishinari baka ni shi sugi kami ( A very stupid Nishinari God), God interrupts to say he isn’t stupid.
They ask God if he has any idea for the karuta. God thinks it’s very difficult but he comes for an idea for “ro”, but he is told they already have the “ro” card.
Tasai adds the “ko”: Korokoro korogaru maiku ( a rolling microphone), doing a reference to the first mic they had that was falling down all the time. Then, he also gets the “ta”: Tako nashi takoyaki oishikatta jō Yokomizo (Joe Yokomizo takoyaki without octopus was delicious). Joe laughs remembering when they pranked him with that.
Kaoru adds the “a”: Atsuryoku nabe tsukawa setara Tasai (Tasai, if you used a pressured cooker), making a reference when Tasai cooked in a program and it would had take less time doing it with a pressure cooker.
Joe finally adds the “tsu”: Tsubo no bāmukūhen kiru toki no Kaoru-san shinken (Kaoru-san cutting the jar of Baumkuchen seriously) Kaoru says they already had the “tsu” but seems confused and makes Joe repeat the line.
Anyway the episode comes to an end and they will do the rest of the cards next week. 28 cards left! Stay tuned!

Hayami Yu Lyrics: Cinderella Starlight (シンデレラ・スターライト)
English translation and romanization below the cut.
ENGLISH
I wanna spend a thousand nights with you before tomorrow We’ll dance all night, just you and I
I’ve been dreaming of tonight for half a year Of you, illuminated by the candle light And the snow gracing my window, the wind, the flames in the fireplace making you and I flicker...
I hide my fingertips in the tablecloth And find you there crossing your legs, so I touch you White dress, a flustered champage... Don’t ever leave me
I wanna love you. You love me My heart flutters, worrying about what time it is
You look different from usual in your tuxedo Stay in step with the beating of my heart I’ll tell you how I feel tonight using my fingers, my arm around your shoulders
I’m the only one feeling awkward in our warm room Right now, I’m thinking about how this dream will end I’d love to come here with you again sometime. Can you hear my heart?
I wanna spend a thousand nights with you before tomorrow We’ll dance all night, just you and I Just you and I

Fukkireta.
Did you do it?
Yes, of course my lady...
Good work. I look forward to seeing how Ouma deals with this...
*From their high rise seat, Misako and Misuzu look at Kokichi frantically speaking to his band.
Ok, so this is the song that you’re gonna be playing now. A few things came up and we’re gonna have to work it out. Think you can pull it off?
Hanako: We sure can but...sir, what kind of song is this?
The hell if I know. Kurafto said that I should follow his plan and everything will turn out fine.
Also, he highly advised you that asking questions about it may not favor good results, so maybe just play for now, and he’ll answer whatever after the performance is done.
Hanako: Well, that is what we’re here for. Alright gang, let’s get to it!
*Hanako assembles the band together as Kokichi rejoins Iroha and the others in the audience.
I really hope Kuripa knows what he’s doing.
I have a few ideas as to what he’s plotting but...none of them are especially good ones...
Hm?
*Suddenly the lights dim and the spotlights shine down upon the stage.
It’s *cough!* ready!
*Kana hurries to join the others.
Kana, what’s going-
...Huh!?
*Iroha is cut off as suddenly someone runs onto the stage.
Th-That’s-!
Good EEEEVENING everyone!
Wha-
Wha-
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT!?!?!
*Kuripa rushes out on stage decked in makeup and a long sleeved dress, complete with hair extensions and blush.
That-! Is that Kurafto!?
Woah...this was unexpected.
Wh-What the actual hell is this...!?
What does he think he’s playing at? There’s no way this will work!
*Regardless of the audience complains, the band starts playing. Kuripa starts shaking his hips. The audience applaud him, none the wiser to the truth of the situation.
♩ itsudemo I love you. kimi ni Take kiss me! wasurerarenai kara boku no daiji na memorii! dorayaki wa shushoku ni narenai! naraba uwagaki shichaeba boku no omoidoori! ♩
*Couples with his unnaturally high pitched vocals, Kuripa starts doing a hyperactive dance routine as the band unknowingly plays Kasane Teto’s Mischievous Function.
♩ zutto soba de miteru yo bakkuappu wa makasete! hidari kara migi e to dekigoto ga acchi kocchi docchi! kimi wa koko ni iru no? baasudei mada saki desho? ii kagen ni koyubi kara mienai ito shuchou shinai! ♩
I-I’m honestly speechless. Is he insane or something!?
Insane or not, look! It’s working!
Huh?!
*Ryota nods towards the front of the audience. While at first confused as to the truth of the situation, a few people have now started nodding their heads to the beat or drumming their tables.
♩ kawaita shinzou no oto awai uwagoto shaku ni sawaru nante ki ni shiteru kara ni kimatten jan soredemo shinjite shiawase ni naru you ni reigi tadashiku mazu wa sasai na aisatsu toko kara Are you ready? ♩

I honestly can’t believe this is working.
If anyone here finds out that’s a dude on stage, this comes crashing down.
Mr Ouma, are you head bobbing?
Why not?! He’s rocking it up there!
That is true...*cough!*
♩ hyakunengo tsuzuku nara yakusoku asshuku shite machigatta meeru kara kanchigai no tekipakiteki sutoroo no kuwaekata sukoshi wa chigau desho? miteminufuri sareta sekai ga bakuhatsu shichau!! choushi ni noridasu demo sugu ni hekomidasu karei na bousou dare ga tomete kuremasu ka beibee butsukareba mata atarashii chishiki hakkutsu demo chikara tsukite shimaeba soko made ♩

C’MON KURIPA! YOU GOT THIS!
*The instrumental breaks out as s Iroha cheers, and now most of the audience by now are on their feet and clapping to the beat.
...
I see...so this is your answer?
Miss Rokuhana?
...
I shall wait until all is said and done...but it’s apparent to me now...
For someone to throw aside their shame to save their friends...I get it now...
!!!!
*Kuripa breaks out into pretend air guitar on stage as the guitarist breaks out into a riff of their own.
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
♩ itsudemo I love you. kimi ni Take kiss me.! ohoshisama ni negaigoto kanaete kuremasu ka! chikyuu no uragawa made boku o hakonde! ichiban kirei na hana o sagashi ni ikun da! mada kimi no atsui omoi wa omoi wa hoho ni tsutau namida! shizuku wa mune ni tsutsunde todokeru yo sora ni! itsudemo I love you. kimi ni Take kiss me.! wasurerarenai kara boku no daiji na memorii! dorayaki wa shushoku ni narenai! naraba uwagaki shichaeba boku no omoidoori! yume kara pipipi samenaide samenaide! nukumori nigenaide mada asa wa! tappuri aru kara ato gofun iya juppun matasete! ♩
*As the song ends, Kuripa struts backwards, and does a hell turn for dramatic effect as the final note is hit. The audience erupts into cheers.
WOOOOHOOO!
Yeah! Go get ‘em!
Hey, guys, look!]
Huh?
*Ryota suddenly points to the high rise seats.
...!
...
*Misako and Misuzu are on their feet and providing a heavy applause.
*pant* *pant* *pant*
*Kuripa pants with exhaustion, gives a cheeky wave, and skips backstage.

--- ¹The pigeon imagery in the PV and the references to it here are a Japanese pun that doesn't transfer over: in English, pigeons go "coo coo" but in Japanese they go "popopo" (or with a little creativity, POPPOPPOPPO). There's also a bonus pun in that the word for pigeon (hato) sounds like the English word for heart (HAATO), which often gets used in pop music lyrics.
Also, as most H!P fans know by now, this is a cover of KAN's Pop Music but arranged with H!P's dinstinctively disco flavor and pays homage to several Western pop songs:
The "pop pop pop music!" in the intro is fittingly taken from M's Pop Muzik and the instrumental bridge between stanzas is a mix: the first part is from YMCA by The Village People and the second part is Van McCoy's The Hustle. Finally, the "Ahhh Juice=Juice!" in the middle of the song is a homage to Chic's Le Freak.

Untouchable. 🙋🏻♀️
Jamadar ji used to come to our home to clean the toilets. He would also sweep the kuccha aangan inside our house, with a pretty big seenkh ki jhhadu.
Ma was liberal for her times, educated, and whenever she could manage, he also got a cup of tea. The tea though was served in a chini ka cup.
Unbeknownst to the ‘really’ elders in the family, he would sometimes help Ma by climbing up to the chotta chhat and bringing something down for her.
When he would ring the back- door bell for his salary, sometimes I would go and give him the money. We never touched hands in that exchange.
I don’t know if he deliberately kept a distance - the money would be sort of dropped into his palm. There would be some conversation too. He would call me bitiya.
I discussed him endlessly, with Ma when I grew up enough to understand the malaise of the caste system. To my parents credit, they never made a big deal of his caste. And that he was an Untouchable. (I will ask Abba about it today when we sit for our tea.)
I do recall though, that someone had once told me it was because he did a lot of ‘dirty work’ that we didn’t ‘touch’ him. If he were to bathe and wear clean clothes, it would be just fine.
In my maternal grandmother’s home, the jamadarin was a stunner. She was called Rani ji, and as I grew up, the irony didn’t escape me. A Rani is a Queen. Do you know any queen who picks up the waste matter of hundreds of people? 🤨
She would come and shout from the nallah near our house, resplendent in pink, her silver jewellery in place. “Mata jiiii, paani dal dijiye!”
I never saw or heard of anyone misbehave with her in our home. She too would get tea and something to eat.
Despite this, there was a distance kept between them and us. I don’t recall any of my elders asking us to stay away. But we just did and never played with them like we would with maali baba. Perhaps they too kept the distance, not knowing any better. There were very orthodox people in my family, who would probably take a bath at the slightest encounter with jamadar ji. But those people lived in our ancestral homes.
My maternal grandfather fought for the rights of human scavengers. I have written blogs about how he and his band of boys spent night after night cleaning the town of faecal waste when the cleaners were on strike. They would bathe with mountains of carbolic soap and yet the stench wouldn’t leave them.
And I have on several occasions grit my teeth and stepped into a clogged sewer in my marital home to clean it out. Nana sb could do it, why couldn’t I? There was no shame in it, surely.
No one else would and the entire angry rant was about how the sweeper community had grown such wings!
It was either clean up the mess or watch the sewer gurgle ominously threatening to spill out all over the courtyard. I would clean up and curse the architect who made such a mess with building the house. 🤷🏻♀️ I also hoped I was setting an example for my children.
These memories keep rearing their heads. And I see how life comes a full circle.
Now we will flinch back and not just a few inches when we will encounter someone, even a friend or a relative who is dressed to the nines.
You see, these days, everyone is an Untouchable .
Oh the irony of it all.
