Nexus - The Collective Works of Recent National Art School Graduates

What I connect with…

Nexus at Sheffer Gallery is an exhibition of recent National Art School Students, organised and curated by my good friend and artist Vicki Potter. Potter’s works in the show (the first three shown above) are a real highlight, showcasing her technical proficiency with her favourite medium, as well as showing her unique ability to pull colours together that give the domestic settings of her artworks moments of pure joy.

The work of assemblage artist Kim Baldwin has considerable impact within the context of the mostly painted wall works that make up the show, with its bright colour panels and sculptural forms that emerge out from the walls, spill out onto plinths, and rise up from the floor. Baldwin also has a sizeable corresponding painting that takes its colour cues from her sculptural work, establishing a dialogue between mediums, that speak of her organic process of playing, and making discoveries, with forms and colours finding their perfect eventual fit along the way.

Martin Williams is another artist working across disciplines adding three new bronze sculptures to his repertoire, as well as an impressive blue painting drawing parallels to Francis Bacon but clearly inspired by the unique National Art School chapel space that is now home to life drawing classes. Williams curious figurative sculptures are a real triumph.

Near the entrance to the exhibition is a series of small works by painter Olwen Henstridge. The three intimate still life compositions could almost be a triptych, but are instead presented as three individual works. Each feature a small glass vessel with a white and yellow striped table cloth, and in two of the compositions, various fruit. Henstridge’s keen observation of the glass makes them feel luminous, as well as adding shadows that give the forms weight. My favourite is the first panel that has a more muted palette, and a dark burnt umber hue cutting out the contrasted shape of a sherry glass.

Mat Hooker continues his exploration of figures in a landscape, but plays with scale creating compositions that pull the works into a place for emotive consideration; are these figures expressions of the landscape? Are these beings of some mythical origin story akin to the indigenous Dreamtime? Or are these landscapes an emotional expression of the figure? The ambiguity of Hookers work sets up the foundation for the viewers curiosity to project their own lived experiences into his imagined landscapes, with the outcome different for each person who views the work, guided only by the subtle hint of figurative gesture.

I’ve mentioned just five of the ten artists on offer here, who each bring something unique to the table, definitely making the trip into the gallery well worth it. Of course I may be biased having spent the last three years with these people, but if an art scene is a club, then supporting your mates is a good place to start to build a thriving arts community. Well done to everyone involved.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has end-of-the-world, Schöckl-scaling off-road capability, but that’s not why most people buy ’em. In the US, the G63 outsells the base G550, and not by a small margin. On top of that, I can pretty much guarantee all the AMGs you see running around have 22-inch wheels and rubber bands for tires. It’s why I’ve always said the G550 is actually the better buy for folks who might want to get a little dirty. But thanks to a new option pack for the 2021 AMG G63, that’s not really the case anymore.

For $3,050, you can spec your 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63 with the AMG Trail Package. This adds a recalibrated off-road setting to the G63’s driving modes, with softer damping for a slightly more deft approach to off-roading. This pack also adds a black underbody brush guard, all-season floor mats, rear mud flaps and matte black 20-inch wheels with — and this is the important bit — all-terrain tires. Capability aside, the Trail Package is a really cool look. And paired with new paint colors like this test car’s G Manufaktur Arabian Grey, I’m 100% here for AMG’s butch updo.

The all-terrain tires in question are deliciously meaty 275/50 Pirelli Scorpion ATRs. Their tall sidewalls and aggressive tread pattern are far better than those on any all-season tire, especially when the going gets tough. Those deep treads can better expel dirt and mud, and when aired down, they provide excellent traction and control in deep sand. Look, I’m not going to try and tell you the G63 isn’t a stellar off-roader in its stock spec, but great suspension geometry, locking axles and a big V8 mean bupkis if the contact patches — the points where your car actually touches the ground — are weak.

Let’s not forget the heart and soul of the G63: AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. This engine produces 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. This not only rockets the G63 to 60 mph in a scant 4.4 seconds, it means there’s a huge reserve of low-end power available at all times. I’ll admit, even with the sophisticated suspension and appropriate tires, a lot of hairy off-roading situations can be remedied by following the trusty “when in doubt, power out” theory.

But even if you never take the G63 off-road, the Trail Package pays dividends in daily life, too. These softer tires make for a more comfortable highway ride, and while the tradeoff here is reduced lateral traction at speed, let’s be honest, you aren’t doing any hot cornering in a freaking G63. The tire change shouldn’t affect your fuel economy, either; expect to see the same dismal 13 miles per gallon city, 16 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined as before. Then again, what else would you expect from a 577-hp SUV that’s about as aerodynamic as a barn?

The G63’s basic chassis and steering calibrations don’t change if you select the AMG Trail Package, so all of those good — well, unique — attributes carry over, as well. Plus, every G63 comes standard with Mercedes’ full suite of driver-assistance features, including full-speed adaptive cruise control, blind-spot assist and lane-keeping assist. The G63 also comes with a 360-degree camera, which is super helpful when negotiating tight situations, off-road or otherwise.

Beyond driving aids, the G63 gets all of the G-Class’ best cabin tech, with one major caveat. There’s a 12.3-inch reconfigurable gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, but this runs the older COMAND setup, not Mercedes’ excellent new MBUX interface. That means there’s no touchscreen, no augmented reality navigation overlays and no friendly “Hey, Mercedes” voice to tell you a joke when you’re having a poopy day. At least COMAND has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto bundled in, as well as a number of Mercedes-Benz connected services. A Burmester sound system is standard, too.

The G63’s interior is just so damn nice, with optional Nappa leather surfaces, real metal accents and excellent attention to detail. There’s headroom for days, even if shoulder room is on the narrow side, and the G63 has plenty of no-additional-cost amenities, like heated front and rear seats, multicolor ambient lighting, a sunroof and more. The back seats are tight-ish, but at least there’s real legroom in this generation G-Class, and the heavy, side-hinged rear door opens to reveal a huge cargo hold — though most of the usable space is vertical. Go buy some tall plants, but put a tarp down so you don’t mess up the carpet.

You’ll need at least $157,500 to get into a 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63, including $1,050 for destination. Throw in the $3,050 AMG Trail Package — along with my test car’s AMG Night Package ($1,950), Comfort Seat Package ($2,220), carbon-fiber trim ($3,700), Arabian Grey paint ($6,500) and a few other odds and ends — and you’ll get to the $176,370 as-tested price of the G63 pictured here. There’s a whole wide world of color and trim options available for the G63, too, so by all means, go nuts.

I’d be remiss not to mention that the $132,800 G550 will check 95% of the same boxes for a lot less money, though the Trail Package is only available on the G63. (Nothing a tire shop can’t partially remedy, though.) Then again, given the G’s sales stats, the 550/AMG disparity clearly doesn’t matter. And now that the Trail Package amplifies the G63’s off-road cred to G550-surpassing levels, the hilariously powerful AMG is even harder to argue against. Live it up, big spender.

Art Walk: Week 2

As a recap, our team T.A.C.K. received the artwork “Moses” by Ivan Meštrović located by the quad side entrance of Shaffer Art Building at Syracuse University. Our objective for this project is to create an interactive intervention in which we cannot assist the interactor and the intervention. Ideally, our intervention should be self-explanatory. 

As we presented last class, our team did not have a concise idea of an intervention we can place in this scenic area. After developing an idea, we decided to keep the zen box and place interactive plaques inside where the interactor can read about the history of this artwork. Ideally, when the interactor touches the plaque it should play music. Each plaque would play a different music.

This is what the designed plaques look like:

We went with SU’s theme, to make interactors feel safe using this equipment. It sort of like a play on the mind. Technically, “Moses” is part of SU’s Art Gallery... We’re just emphasizing it. =)

Based on these sketches we build our prototype.

We then decided to use the link proved to us in class for the piano simulation (https://makeymakey.com/piano/). Essentially, it worked and so we took our intervention to the location of our assigned artwork. 

Our intervention had complications with the Bluetooth setup however it didn't take long to fix. The only true issue was the wire and “hiding.” I did not adequately estimate the distance of the zen box and where I could hide.

Observations were conducted between 4:30PM and 5:30PM.

In conclusion, the reason we decided to use the default Makey Makey piano keys is that we were unsure of our design for our intervention. Now that we know our intervention is sustainable, we can proceed to move forward with our original idea. 

Ultimately, we did not want to disrupt the peaceful area as a whole, however, the emotion driven by the music should give a new found perspective on the art.

We are excited to continue for future modifications. Next week’s final version of our Art Walk should include stands in the box so the plaques may be rested neatly on it do not look cluttered in the zen box, make the box more appealing and less sketchy, and to follow through with the final coding on processing now that we concluded our assignment to work. Another thing we wish to change is to have that ground wire connected to the yoga mat with aluminum foil so that interactor does not have to hold it awkwardly.

However, looking back at the assignment and feedback we realized we were not to convey the history of our Art Walk, but to have the interactor embody the artwork. Our newly developed idea would be “twister” like yoga mat. There will be the aluminum foil in which the interactor puts places their hand on for a position. Each plaque will display a position that represents the timeline of the artwork-- the plaque, however, would display brief information (? still debatable). Each position would still play the originally assigned music to feel the emotion driven by the timeline of the artwork.

We want interactors to ask the question “Why am I doing this position?” or “How does this song relate?” and go to the link we provide the information and why it correlates to each song.

This interaction should still keep the area “Zen-like” and an escape/mind break, from class.

Μετά τις τελευταίες τους sold out εμφανίσεις τον Νοέμβριο του 2016 στη χώρα μας οι Iced Earth απέδειξαν και στους πλέον δύσπιστους πως παραμένουν μία από τις πλέον υπολογίσιμες δυνάμεις του χώρου. Ένα κλασσικό heavy metal συγκρότημα που βγάζει σπουδαίους δίσκους και πραγματοποιεί ακόμα σπουδαιότερες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις.

Όσοι έχουν παραβρεθεί σε συναυλίες τους γνωρίζουν πως ο John Schaffer και το συγκρότημά του ποτίζουν τη φανέλα με τόνους ιδρώτα, δίνουν το 100% των δυνάμεων τους και αυτή η απόλυτα ειλικρινής  στάση τους έχει κάνει τόσο  αγαπητούς όσο λίγα συγκροτήματα. Έτσι και αλλιώς η χώρα μας πάντα είχε μία ξεχωριστή θέση στην καρδιά των Iced Earth, ο Shaffer ποτέ δεν ξεχνάει πως ήμασταν από τους πρώτους που στήριξαν έμπρακτα το συγκρότημα γεγονός που ποτέ δεν ξεχνά να επισημαίνει .

Το τελευταίο τους album με τίτλο “Incorruptible” κυκλοφόρησε τον καλοκαίρι του 2017, η ανταπόκριση από το κοινό ήταν ενθουσιώδης, όλοι μίλησαν για έναν από τους καλύτερους δίσκους στη μακροχρόνια πορεία της μπάντας και η ανυπομονησία  για να ακούσουμε ζωντανά τα τραγούδια του νέου δίσκου όπως πολλά classic ‘χτυπάει κόκκινο’ με το που ανακοινώνεται πως θα έρθουν στη χώρα μας.  Δεν θα μπορούσε να γίνει διαφορετικά άλλωστε.

Oι πρώτες τους κυκλοφορίες ήταν τα “Iced Earth” (1990) και “Night Of The Stοrmrider” (1991) όπου και παρουσιάστηκαν με power / thrash κερδίζοντας ευθύς εξαρχής τις εντυπώσεις. Ο πρώτο βήμα προς την επιτυχία έγινε το 1995 με το album “Burnt Offerings”, στο οποίο παρουσίασαν τον νέο τους τραγουδιστή Mat Barlow , ενώ στη χώρα μας απέκτησαν status super stars με την επόμενη δουλειά τους, το μυθικό πλέον “The Dark Saga” (1996) αλλά και το “Something Wicked This Way Comes” που ακλούθησε το 1998. Το “Alive In Athens” γράφει ιστορία, το ‘Horror Show’ το 2001 κλείνει το κύκλο μίας ιδιαίτερα επιτυχημένης 6ετίας και λίγο αργότερα ο Mat Barlow θα αποχωρήσει από το συγκρότημα.

Οι Iced Earth θα προσλάβουν τον τραγουδιστής των Judas Priest, Tim Owens, και θα κυκλοφορήσουν μαζί του 2 album τα “The Glorious Burden” (2004) και “Framing Armageddon” (2007), ενώ στο “The Crucible Of Man” (2008) ακούμε και πάλι τη φωνή του Mat Barlow.

Από το 2011 και μετά παρατηρούμε την αναγέννηση του συγκροτήματος , με τον S. Block πλέον στη θέση πίσω από μικρόφωνο. Το “Dystopia”, είναι ο δίσκος ‘ολική επαναφορά’ και το ‘The Plagues of Babylon’ παρουσιάζει το σχήμα δημιουργικό όσο ποτέ κάτι από επιστεγάστηκε από την κυκλοφορία του “Incorruptible”.

To ραντεβού λοιπόν αυτή τη φορά είναι για τις 23 και 24 Ιανουαρίου του 2018. Μία συνάντηση με την οποία το συγκρότημα και οι Έλληνες οπαδοί τους θα ανανεώσουν τους όρκους πίστης. Μέχρι την επόμενη. Είμαστε ήδη εκεί!
