Paladins i fucking LOVE oath of the deep sea for obvious reasons. Also it's like a complete flip on the typical paladin archetype? Well, I found something.

Lord_Morrow on GSS had taken a look at the Kwestin Chronivac stories before they went down! MonsterMash62, a writer who contributed to the original reality change threads back in the late 90s/early 00s, as well as Nutiper and others, also chimed in with information about another idea that appears to have been conflated with the Chronivac, the Master PC. Take a look below the cut for a detailed breakdown of what I’ve learned.

Per Lord_Morrow, the original Chronivac story by Mark Kwestin was an age change series, with the name Chronivac derived from chrono (time) and -vac as an abbreviation of vacuum. In the story “Li’l Jake,” a 30-something man named Jake receives the Chronivac and uses it to turn himself, his roommate, and his landlady into teenagers. They then all proceed to have sex. Some of the story had already been removed from archive.org by the time Morrow saw it, so he didn’t have the full details to share.

Also in the late 90s, a story concept called “Master PC” was posted by a writer called JR Parz. As Parz says on his website, he came up with the concept of a reality-altering computer based on the film Delirious (1991), in which the male lead makes the female lead fall madly in love with him using a magical typewriter. The “Master PC” stories as written by Parz focus on a character named Adam receiving the Master PC, a supernatural desktop computer, and using it to transform several women in his life. The primary focus of these stories is hetero and lesbian sex and mind control.

Both Chronivac and the Master PC sparked imitators centred on Kwestin and Parz. While Kwestin allowed the concept to be used on CYOC with credit (which obviously did not extend to credit from post-CYOC imitators), Parz kept the Master PC universe relatively restricted. Writers who wanted to use Adam and the other original “Master PC” characters needed to allow Parz to act as chief editor, and outside of that he preferred that pairings be restricted to hetero or lesbian sex. He also preferred that characters not be transformed to be under the age of 16, which is relevant to the discussion of Chronivac as it first appeared on CYOC.

The GSS forum users posit, and I agree, that Kwestin relinquishing control of Chronivac led it to supersede the Master PC in the gay TF community. The lack of age restrictions was clearly a significant factor of the concept’s success on CYOC, as the primary thing most GSS forum members mention about the “Chronivac 4.0” thread is how many branches had characters become physically and mentally children in an erotic context (to be clear, I am reporting on this, not condoning it). Many of our contemporary story concepts, as Mostly_Ghostly noted, probably emerged and permeated the community during the CYOC period in the 2000s, including Chronivac, the Great Shift, and other TF methods. I’d guess that, possibly as a response to the amount of underage Chronivac stories being written, people began to expand the powers of the Chronivac to other areas, making it more like the Master PC concept they couldn’t freely use to write gay erotica. MonsterMash62, who was present in the community while Master PC emerged, chose to create different concepts, like his MasterMaker, rather than risk infringing on Parz’s interest.

Nutiper, who also witnessed the development of the Chronivac concept, sketched out a history and made some key observations. Firstly, even when the Master PC concept (or similar ideas) appears today, it is often associated with being on an old, desktop style computer, usually tied to a specific location. A major event in the story is often someone else finding the PC and activating some kind of failsafe the main character has implemented, which turns the interloper into a dumb sexpot to protect the main character’s interest. Often, older writers work with this kind of model, where the computer remains in one place, as in BRK and MonsterMash62’s stories.

Secondly, Nutiper noticed that gay Master PC/Chronivac stories often involve some kind of turnabout, where the original main character loses control of the reality changing device and someone gets revenge on them. This is as opposed to most hetero Master PC stories, which are often straight-up power fantasies where the main character gets whatever they want. I would add that turnabout or revenge as a story element is something I associate very strongly with gay porn, and which is well-attested in heterosexual women’s erotica as well. The theory goes that our expressions of sexuality and desire are deemed immoral and unclean by our culture, and this leads us to want an external force to remove our own agency in expressing that sexuality. Put another way, we want the blame for expressing our sexual needs to fall on someone else, and to have our control of it taken away.

Thirdly, Nutiper noted that Chronivac’s emergence on Tumblr after 2013 and before the porn ban fundamentally changed the concept and associated it with smartphones. @jakelandryshorts, absqrst, and others wrote stories where the Chronivac was an app on a character’s phone. These stories were also often written from the point of view of the character being controlled, another mainstay of gay erotica that doesn’t appear much in hetero erotica, and played with the controlled character’s obliviousness to their transformation. This observation matched with a lot of my understanding of Chronivac, and ties us back to the contemporary Chronivac landscape, including the story I reblogged that triggered my interest.

It’s interesting to track story concepts like this through time. Our community exists outside the interest of most historians (but if I do a PhD you KNOW my thesis will be on TF porn) so our history is primarily oral. I think that, as a community, we’re very fortunate to have access to the intergenerational, intercontinental community over on the Gay Spiral Forums. We share a set of knowledge and ideas that don’t exist outside of our little group, and I think that shows how much we all have in common, even when we’re all quite different. Almost 30 years ago, two men posted power fantasy stories about becoming an ideal self, and we’ve been riffing on their idea in hundreds, probably thousands, of ways ever since.

Speaking of Chronivac stories: has anyone done any anthropology on where the concept comes from? I've done some cursory searching, but the farthest I've been able to follow it back is CYOC. My DND group quickly mentioned that I should make Viktor as a dnd character as our next campaign taking place in a fairytale / Arthurian inspired world.

He is a tiefling, because I found this quote: “ In Czechoslovakia, historians have stated that devils played a more important role than gods” so that made it real easy. His tail is inspired by the lovely lizard bean herself Rio. He is a sorcerer mix with artificer mastermaker - specializes in integrating flesh and steel, creating powerful construct limbs and replacing weak organs of flesh with components of metal and stone.
