Death of a Love Affair
Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader
Summary: The three times you understood and the final time you couldn’t.
Warning: angst with no happy ending
A/n: this felt oddly personal to me this is my first time writing in the Y/N perspective and in a one shot format so please be kind. I kinda left a possibly for p2, not sure about that yet, but let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in!
Main masterlist || Part 2A (happy end) || Part 2B (sad end)
The first time it happened, you completely understood.
You had an inkling as to what you were getting into when you started dating a 187 genius who graduated at a young age and who was scouted straight from college by the FBI. It wasn’t hard to comprehend these external circumstances mixed with his internal need to prove himself worthy of belonging with the big boys would result in missed personal events. It was a given, you expected it.
You just didn’t count on him missing your graduation. After all, he gave his word that he’ll be there to see you walk the stage and receive your diploma. He promised you and yet, as you scanned the crowd of loved ones hugging the attendees, there was no sign of his tie wearing, button up lithe form weaving through the crowd, no sign of his slicked hair, meticulously tucked behind his ears and no sign his doe eyed hazel eyes shining with pride as you joined the ranks of adulthood and unemployment.
You reach for your phone, now finally free from the nerves and adrenaline of going up the stage, with a single unread message from the one you wished to be here with you.
I’m sorry, angel. There’s a case and Gideon needs me.
You sighed with a mild smile sprouting on your glossed lips as you sent back a reply.
No worries! We can celebrate when you get back. Be safe, I love you.
“Oh honey, I’m so proud of you!” Your mom exclaimed, reaching for a hug. “You graduated and with so many achievements—I mean look at all these cords hanging around your neck!”
You laughed as you stepped out from her warm embrace and watched joyful tears gather under her eyes. “Thanks, Mom! Hopefully all these cords help me get a job soon, huh, or else I’ll be moving back home with you.”
“Oh honey, stop joking! As if I wouldn’t welcome you back with open arms,” she quipped back.
A hand holding a bouquet of flowers shot up to your face. It was a bundle of your favorite, carnations, in ranges of different colors.
“Congratulations, lil sis,” your older brother, Trevor, breathed out. “Do I get a hug too or is that just for Mom?”
You giggled as you stepped into his arms, happy to be sharing this moment with your ever loving protector of a brother, no matter how busy he might be as a head chef for his own highly rated restaurant.
“Hey big brother, thanks for being here,” you mumbled in his tight grasp. “Did you pass along my invite to Dad?”
You felt him subtly shake his head causing your smile to slightly falter. You knew better than to expect the man who gifted you half of his genes to show up—a workaholic, absentee of a father whose love language was to deposit checks to your bank account from his fattened pockets as a lawyer for the rich. It was the cause of your parents’ separation when you were five years old. The matriarch tired from taking up the mantle as both the paternal and maternal figure for both you and your brother. Your mother exhausted from repeatedly believing broken promises uttered to herself and to her babies.
Having seen first hand how each lie wrapped as an oath chipped a piece of the loving and bright woman who gave birth to you and your brother, you vowed to never let that happen to you. It was a cautionary tale engrained in your mind. A fable—a curse really and in hindsight, you should have seen the markings of history repeating itself.
“Now, where is your nerdy pipe cleaner of a boyfriend?” He asked as he scanned around the vicinity for a sight of Spencer.
You shrugged, genuinely alright with your FBI agent of a boyfriend missing this milestone in your life. “Duty called. But that’s okay, we’ll celebrate when he gets back.”
A pair of eyes, similar to yours, inquisitively studied you as if making sure there was no hidden hurt behind those words uttered. “If you say so,” he stated, turning to your mother who was smiling at the both of you—her greatest treasures. “Mom, let’s get out of here. I had John prep the kitchen for a feast.”
You and your mom chattered excitedly at the passenger back seat as Trevor backed the four-door navy sedan out of the parking and drove off to his restaurant for the promised lunch graduation.
———
It was well into the night as you were settling in bed when the tell-tale signs of the main door being unlocked echoed through the dark green walls of his apartment.
“Spence?” You called out, letting him know that you were there instead of in your own apartment, 30 minutes away.
More shuffling was heard before the object of your love and affection rounded the bedroom door with a set of his own flowers on hand. He breathed out your name in reverence as he went for a kiss, pleased that he had still caught you awake.
“Congratulations, my love,” he smiled as he pulled away from your soft lips. “These are for you and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”
You smiled back, gladly accepting his apologies and flowers. “It’s all good, Spence. I know how demanding your job is. I missed you.”
“I missed you too. I told Gideon and Hotch that’ll I’ll be unavailable this weekend. It’s just you and me,” he said as he went in for another kiss, unable to resist any longer. Not long after, his outside clothes and your sleepwear were strewn all around the bedroom floor as both your bodies merged into one and reached a mutual crescendo with your gasps and his groans as the choir.
***
The second time, you moderately understood.
You noted that the BAU was back in full swing with Gideon being brought back to the saddle after what happened in Boston. As his birthday treat, you both agreed to fly in for the weekend to Vegas to visit his mother at the facility. He never would have gone alone should it not have been for your enthusiasm to come with. You loved talking to Diana about Spencer’s childhood during her good days and you also loved being in her presence still even when she was lost in her teaching past—acting out as a student as you got to hear her lectures about literature.
The bustling at the airport had you tip toeing up to catch a sight of Spencer, your flight departing in about an hour. It was a late Friday afternoon, travelers were piling in for a weekend trip, and he promised to head straight from the Bureau to the airport to meet you by the entrance. Your head swiveled from left to right, biting your lip as the minutes ticked by with no sign of your boyfriend running towards you.
The phone in your jean pocket rang and your heart slightly dropped at the sight of the caller ID.
“Hey pretty boy,” you greeted, naively wishing that this phone call wasn’t a bearer of bad news. “Are you almost at the airport?”
There were muffled voices heard in the background. “Uhm—actually—”
You sighed, understanding what he wanted to say. “There’s a case,” you stated as a matter of fact. “It’s alright, Spence. I’ll tell your mom something popped up. No worries.”
“You—you don’t have to go alone. We can always reschedule,” he suggested, the timber of his voice going up an octave as if he was in a panic at the idea of disappointing you.
“You and I both know Diana’s excited about this trip,” you chuckled as you recalled how her doctor had described his mother’s face lighting up every time she was reminded of the visit. “I’ll go and spend some time with her. Maybe even get her to tell me more embarrassing childhood stories about her perfect boy.”
He lightly laughed at your joke to ease the tension and remorse he was feeling. “I could have told you all of it if you just asked.”
“Well, does it include pictures of you too?” You teased as you were checking in at the counter.
There was a stern voice calling for his name in the background, it was Hotch, you silently guessed.
“Listen, I have to go. The team is about to give the profile,” he rushed out to inform you. “I’ll see you when we both get back. I love you.”
The call ended without so much of a chance for you to say it back.
As the plane got ready to take off, your mood continued to further dampen. He promised to go—to you and to his own mother via the phone. An ivy seed of doubt was planted in your mind. Did he try to excuse himself from the case to his boss as some sort of birthday gift? It really didn’t work that way, you knew, with how of a high demand his job is but still, you wondered if his team was informed about the plans for this weekend or were they purposely kept out of the loop. That notion wouldn’t surprise you at the slightest, thinking back. The profilers weren’t even aware of his mother’s state and condition. Hell, they didn’t even know that you existed, a girlfriend of two years, until well into his first year at the BAU.
Deep down you grasped why he keeps Diana a secret. You were aware of the shame and embarrassment he felt for himself, having had to have her institutionalized by the time he reached the age of eighteen. You got that, didn’t mean you understood it but nonetheless, you respected his decision and was even proud of him for reaching out for professional help no matter how much he viewed that action of his cowardly. But what you weren’t really privy to was really why your relationship was kept in the dark. It could have saved him from Morgan’s incessant ribbing of his inability to pick up women.
During one night where your insecurities got the best of you, you asked in a small voice if he was ashamed of the relationship. He vehemently denied it, repeatedly saying that he just wanted to have a secret solace—a happy home to return to that was untouched by the worst human terrors that he encounters on the daily. That was what you were, he explained, a sunlit luscious reprieve filled with flowers and laughter where he could rest his weary bones from the ravaging, dark waves. His own piece of heaven here on earth. He then kissed your fears away that night, hugged you tight into his chest—the vibrations from his humming lulling you to slumber.
———
“I always knew it would take a special girl to understand my special boy,” Diana mused out loud as you plated a slice of cake for her.
You blushed, sitting down beside her with your own. “He’s perfect. I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else.”
She affectionately combed through your hair, similar to how her son would. “Thank you. For visiting and being understanding of his erratic schedule.”
“It’s no problem at all, Diana. I love him, I knew what I was getting into when we started dating.” You stated as the ivy seed of doubt sprouted in your mind—did you really? Did you really understand what you were getting into?
***
The third time, you still tried to understand.
There you were surrounded by the purest celebration of love and matrimony, sans your long-haired, sweater vest wearing plus one. Your brother was getting married to the love of his life, vowing himself to be with her for better, for worse and your other half was in another state catching criminals. Fiddling with the diamond engagement ring adorning your finger, you recalled how you ended up alone, dateless, in this joyous occasion.
You RSVP’ed with a date when the invitation arrived four months ago. Your brother even calling in to make sure that he, your well-celebrated FBI fiancée, will be able to attend a month before the wedding. You internally scoffed at his repeated checking but in retrospect, maybe he saw the end well before you did. You promised to him, as Spencer did to you, that he’ll be available to watch the union and to save all the slow dances with him. But the day before the wedding, the phone rang for a case in Dallas and you knew what it meant. Without so much of a fight, you kissed him goodbye by the door of his now shared apartment and let the dreary silence enveloped you as you think of how to inform your brother of the new change without hearing the pity and patronization in his voice.
Nursing a glass of red wine, you watched your brother dance with his newly wedded wife and in your peripheral, you spotted your mother approaching you at the table.
“Now why are you being such a sourpuss during this festive event?” She chimed out as she pulled a chair beside you. “You should be out there, dancing and getting to know our new extended family.”
You shrugged, unsure on what to say. She was right, of course. All the guests were enjoying themselves and basking in the warm, infectious glow of the happy couple but you didn’t have the courage in you to mask the despondent emotions inside of you.
Your mother sighed and took your left hand in hers. “You know, when your dad and I were going through the proceedings of the divorce, I had moments when I wanted to back out from it. I loved your father, still holds a piece of my heart till this day, and I thought the small moments of happiness when he was around would be enough to tied me through the days when he wasn’t. I thought those times and our love for you kids were sufficient to keep our love from wilting. If I poured out affection and devotion to the home we once built, it wouldn’t crumble surely. But you know what I forgot—”
You turned to face her somber eyes, looking into yours as if searching for something that seemed to no longer be there.
“—I forgot to take care of myself. I gave a pieces of me away so willing and so many times that when I reached the end of the marriage, I no longer knew who I was. Where the piece of me started and where it ended. You’re withering, my flower. The vibrant life that I once longed to protect in your eyes is slowly dying. I don’t want you to reach the finish line and not know how you got up there. How you ended up giving all yourself away with not a flower bud left to blossom just for you.”
You felt your hackles rise to defend the relationship. In hindsight, this was you denying the truth that was staring you right in the face. “It’s not like that with Spencer, Mom. It’s just—the job is hectic and it’s been his forever dream. He had finally started to gain his footing when Gideon and Elle left and then the kidnapping happened and that pushed his progress back a bit. But he’s getting there now. We’re stabilizing and we had a discussion—there’s less broken promises. It’s just that this recent case in Dallas was urgent and they needed the team to solve crime. I don’t want to take him away from the country and the people who needs his help and from his dream of solving crimes. I love him, Mom, in all of his entirety and he deserves all the respect and understanding from me as his partner.”
She squeezed the hand in hers—the left hand adorning the ring, the material manifestation of his vow to you that you had happily accepted. “I‘ve grown fond of Spencer. I see him as another son of mine but darling, sometimes the love you feel for each other is not enough. A relationship takes continuous work—a task that both individuals must pull in the effort and prioritize. Just think about it,” she stated as she stood up. “Now, no more of this depressing talk and this serious energy from you. Go around, dance with your brother, and enjoy.”
You mustered up a smile as you proceeded to do just what you were told until your feet were sore from all the dancing. But no matter the joyous occasion, it didn’t stop the realization in the form of ivy from taking roots and slowly covering all corners of your mind.
***
And the final time, you could no longer understand.
The grandfather clock stationed at the corner of the dimly lit apartment struck at two. Your figure was still dressed in your purple fitted dress as you waited for your soon-to-be other half to walk through the door. It was another night of getting your hopes up and broken promises and you were no longer sure how much you could take before the love you held in your heart festers and turns into resentment.
You promised yourself you’d never be in a situation that you had seen your mother once be in. You became the careful daughter of a careless man who gave little to no effort to cherish the love a woman had freely given to him. You thought with all your cautiousness and logical thinking, the mistakes of the mother would never be repeated. That was naive thinking—you realized now. By actively being aware of the past, you’d forgotten to look ahead and fell deep into the pitfalls of doing the same as your mother did.
Spencer once mentioned that there was a high divorce rate in his line of duty. How he worried and vowed that you both will never join that rate. And that was a promise he’ll be able to keep, you scoffed to yourself, as you spun the ring on the table.
Another shared piece of information floated to the forefront of your mind. How Haley had recently served Hotch, his unit chief divorce papers. You’ve grown close with her over the years, being the only two constant partners to someone working in the BAU. You’ve seen first hand all the missed milestones in Haley’s and Jack’s life as her husband flew around the country with the cavalry, saving the innocent one case at a time. Never taking the time to realize that the once solid foundation of their marriage was crumbling down with every flight he took. Similar to what was happening in the doctor’s own home.
A set of keys unlatched the mahogany door and a fresh batch of florals were the first that entered through, followed by Spencer looking sheepish as he noted your presence by the sofa. “Angel, I’m so sorry I missed your promotion dinner.”
Silence greeted him as he stumbled to get to where you were. “Carnations for you.”
Tears started to form under your eyes. You didn’t want to break but the reality of your decision was setting in. You wanted to falter, to change your mind, to give him another chance but you knew you couldn’t. You’ve given too much of your understanding away and you doubted you have any more to give to this beautiful man who once promised to make you his top priority.
“I can’t accept them, Spencer.”
His eyebrows furrowed and his body tensing as if sensing the finality behind your words. “Why not? They’re your favorite.”
“They are but—” you took a deep breath, steeling your resolve. “—I think we should stop.”
“W-what? No. No, please,” he stammered out as his own set of tears started flooding his eyes, blurring you from his vision. “I’m sorry I missed the dinner. I’ll make it up to you—I promise just—”
The dam of your emotions broke causing you to freely sob out all the sadness and anger that had collected in your heart. “I’m tired, Spencer. You can’t promise anything to me anymore. You’ve broken so many promises that you’ll only end up breaking them again.”
He took your hands into his, letting the bouquet fall crushed on the hardwood floor, recognizing the ring missing in your finger. “This time, this time it’ll be different. Please, don’t leave me.”
“The country needs you, the BAU needs you. But I need you too, Spencer. I love you, I really do but I can’t be your third priority anymore. I don’t deserve that—don’t I deserve to come first before the country and the job?”
He tightened his hold on your hands as if afraid that you were slipping through his fingers, denying the reality that you already had. “I love you so much. I don’t want to live without you by my side. Tell me how to fix this. Do you want me to leave the BAU? I’ll—I’ll do it, just stay with me, please.”
You shook your head. “I don’t want you to leave the FBI. Your ambition and integrity is one of the facets that I loved about you and you might end up resenting me down the line if you leave now. It’s not yet your time to leave the BAU, you and I both know that,” you pulled your hands away and slid the ring in front of him. “This belongs to you, I’m giving it back.”
His shoulder caved in on itself, the weight of it all too much for him to carry. “I don’t want this to be our end. I just don’t.”
“I don’t want this too, but I need to,” you whispered as your hand reached out to push shoulder length hair out of the way. “Maybe this isn’t the end. Maybe in the future we’d meet again and continue the pages of our love story but for now, I have to do this Spencer. I can’t keep giving a piece of me every time your top priority needs you, I’ll end up hating you if I stay.”
You leaned in for one final kiss. A salty, tear filled kiss of death to a future you had once envisioned with the beautiful boy before you. A white picket fence with children laughing at the backyard—the American dream fading into nothing as you start to pull away.
“Goodbye for now, Spencer.”
He stared at all the curves and dips in your face one last time as if etching every detail into his already perfect memory.
“Goodbye for now, Y/N.”

Shinsō Hitoshi: Friends?
Fandom: BNHA // MHA — [ Masterlist ]
Summary: ~1.2k, fluff
• U.A. had a rumour that Shinsō was only ever late to (L/n)s’ side once, but he hasn’t let anything touch them since. But just how true is it?
Warnings: Potential spoilers
>>>>——————————>
It was a renowned fact that you were perfectly capable of defending yourself in dangerous situations - as well as dishing out your own dangerous attacks.
In this instance, it made sense that yourself and Shinsō were often paired together since he joined Class 2A as you seemed to compliment one another on the field and during training drills.
Hero course third years naturally had the respect and attention of a majority of their juniors, especially since you were all involved in the war. It became useful for when you assisted in their training lessons though and due to Shinsōs’ connection with Sensei Aizawa, he was requested - and you by proxy if it was a team focused protocol.
The set of five students you were both up against were the cleverest so far, you’d noted that when you’d knocked out two of them only to realise they’d sacrificed themselves as bait so the remaining three -two as Hitoshi wrapped the aerial student up- went all out on a combo attack directed at you.
Now you could take this hit, and then use the debris as a cover to counterattack. However, you never had the chance when you saw a familiar cloth bind your attackers’ limb and derail his trajectory into the dusty floor whilst the other received a swift counterattack on your behalf and it was all over.
“Thanks Hitoshi.” The two of you shared a fist bump to celebrate the victory.
“The tactics you used allowed you to survive the longest against Shinsō and (L/n) at 2 minutes, however exposing yourself to danger should only be a last resort…”
As Aizawa finished his teachings and set the assignment of improving their times for the following weeks session, a few students began their idle chatter regarding the exercise. How they’d seen similar behaviour on various accounts.
On occasions when you were in danger, they’d seen Shinsō use his binding cloth to pull you out of the way or neutralise the attackers. They’d seen him put himself between you and an onslaught or push you out of the way. In every circumstance that he was in your radius, and you on the rare chance were in firing range, he’d protect you over himself at any cost.
That’s what heroes do though right? And Shinsō Hitoshi had a greater determination to prove that than most.
This was… different somehow. You were different.
You were certainly friends as you were seen together fairly commonly, but Shinsō was closer to Izuku and Denki, whilst you associated more with Mina and Kirishima. Maybe they were reading too much into this?
———
It was only when the young group were brainstorming strategies did the topic arise in depth.
“I heard from seniors that Shinsō was late once, and he hasn’t let (L/n) get touched since.” One of the group claimed proudly.
“Late? Like to school?”
“No idiot. Apparently (L/n) was up against a villain last year and put themselves between civilians so I found the footage.” The student quickly fished for her phone, playing the video to her peers.
It displayed you taking a nasty blow when acting as a shield, strong enough to draw blood. Shinsō just managed to catch you in his arms before you hit the floor unconscious - a deadly rage sparking in his violet eyes when taking in your condition and looking back to the villain.
“Biggest mistake of your life.”
“Hah! The mistake was—“
It was over instantly, Brainwash took ahold and the rest was wrapped up undeniably quickly. Then the video ended leaving the students gawking.
“Ouch.” One of them winced. “I’ve never seen Shinsō look so angry. That villain was tied up unconscious quicker than anyone could blink.”
“Yep. (L/n) has never taken major hits with him around since.”
“We could use that to our advantage right?”
“Exactly…”
———
The following week you were called upon once more to evaluate their (hopeful) improvements to their previous strategies. Although it was Present Mic supervising this time so it was far more deafening in comparison.
When facing the top scorers from last week, both yourself and Shinsō noticed the adjustments in their tactics but hadn’t quite deciphered their endgame. It was when they staged an attack for you and minimised Shinsōs’ movements to a point that prevented him from getting to you in time did it come to fruition.
You could dodge though, except when one of their quirks went haywire and lead to an explosion large enough to decimate the rocky terrain into a crumbling landslide.
Naturally you’d used your quirk to get the other student to safety which limited your escape time, but with Shinsō and the others out of harms way you were a little reassured. At least until a desperate cloth bound your abdomen - immediately pulling you from an array of thrashing boulders.
You went crashing into a solid chest, toned fishnetted arms enveloping you as effortlessly as breathing. You felt the racing of his heart, the raggedness of his breath, and the warm sigh of relief when he’d pulled his mask down with one hand.
“Hitoshi?”
“Are you alright?” His tone was slightly lower, angling himself slightly so it was spoken near your ear rather than to anyone else.
“Yes but, why are you always saving me?”
His eyes widened for a moment, pulling back slightly in brief surprise like you’d unravelled a personal secret.
“(L/n)! Shinsō! I’m so sorry I dunno what happened - my quirk just— I didn’t mean for it to—“ The panicked first year came bounding over the rocks frantically issuing apologies which Shinsō was admittedly grateful for.
“What matters is that you’re okay, and so are your friends - uh mostly.” You managed a brief glance at the trio who’d cornered your comrade, all of them groaning and rubbing their heads whilst the perpetrator simply shrugged.
“They prevented me from my objective. I had no choice but to incapacitate them.”
“Alright alright, shows over! You may’ve beat your time but the risk wasn’t worth it. I’m sure Aizawa would agree.” Mic chastised, adjusting his glasses to send a daring glance their way.
“Yes Sensei.” The group bowed in apology, the rest of the class both concerned and amused with the whole ordeal.
“You can all help clean up, you can practice quirk management, and you two can let go of each other now y’know.” Mic pointed at each of his targets, raising a bemused brow when landing on the two of you.
Immediately you’d stepped apart, awkwardly locking gazes and snapping back to Present Mic rather guiltily. Though you soon had a moment to yourselves once clean up began and Mic lectured them on quirk control.
“Hitoshi, you know I can handle myself right?”
“I know. But seeing you get hurt once was bad enough, and knowing I hadn’t arrived in time to save the one person I—“ He shoved his hands in his pockets, deadpan gaze remaining on your figure prior to flicking to the ground. “It doesn’t matter. You know how it is.”
“I do. I’d be upset if I couldn’t save you too.”
A meaningful look was exchanged, one that communicated more than words possibly could, and you pretended you hadn’t seen the heavy scarlet dusting the skin of Hitoshi as he pulled his scarf up.
“Since today has been smashing, shall we have an early dinner at the dorms? Maybe watch a movie too?”
“That was terrible.”
“But you appreciate it~”
“I tolerate it.”
The pair of you left together, you laughing as you spoke with Hitoshis’ admiring gaze never leaving you.
In the midst of clearing the collateral damage, the first year class watched on in awe.
“Huh. Maybe they’re more than just friends.”
“Maybe? Hah yeah right!” Present Mic only laughed, oblivious to the entire glass snapping to him in utter astonishment.

FIGHT FOR ME
Fight for Me by Barrett Wilbert Weed, acapella version, ft. Hitoshi Shinsou
⋆ would he fight for you because it was for you, or only because you were acquaintances?
requested by @angeliicheartt : HIHI CUTIE!! i was wondering if i could get fight for me by barrett wilbert weed (heathers: the musical) acapella version ft. hitoshi shinso the loml 😚
⋆ shinsou hitoshi x female reader ⋆ written in 2nd pov, wc: 1.4k ⋆ this request is from the 400 followers event!! mha masterlist ⋆ other notes: mild swearing
it was lunch time at UA high, you and your circle of friends were on your way to the cafeteria. the school as a whole had just recovered from the war, meaning you were now in your second year. that also means you have underclassmen roaming the halls with you now. most of them are respectful, having admiration toward you and your class for having a large part in the past war. the rest of them though, you can’t say the same about them. as believed, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. though only some are thick-skinned enough to voice them out. it just so happens that a decent amount of your underclassmen are those kinds of people.
since the final part of the war was shown to almost the whole of japan, most of said “opinions” consist of you and your classmates’ hero suits, contributions to the fights against the villains, and overall participation in the war. as you walk through the halls full of students of different years, more than often do you hear your name come out of their mouths. todoroki signalled for you to stop walking for a moment as uraraka wanted to put the textbooks she didn’t need anymore back in her locker. you were standing beside midoriya with shinsou on his other side.
shinsou’s more so the “new kid” in class A. sure, he’s been in UA since you were first years, but he was only able to transfer to class A this year, after working with the class during the war. he started to spend most of his time with you, midoriya and some of the others. the two of you don’t have the closest relationship, but you acknowledged each other as friends.
“she’s from 2A, right?” the voice of a first year caught your attention. from your peripheral vision, you could see her eyes looking at you. she and whoever she was talking to were behind you, slightly to your left. you didn’t know what course she was from, but you recognized the student she was with to be a first year in the hero course. you were about to completely turn away when the hero in training spoke up too.
“yeah, she’s one of the ones that didn’t have much to offer for the whole war.” he chuckled before continuing “dunno why they kept her in the hero course. her hero suit looks way too revealing and it looked like she hesitated a lot during the war.”
he stopped talking and it sounded like he was cut off. you were still about to face your underclassman to have a word with him, but someone seemed to beat you to it. turns out the first year was cut off after all. as you turned around, you were met with a sight to behold. shinsou grabbed onto the guy’s collar, effectively shutting him up. the chatter in the hallway seemed to quiet down too. you didn’t notice that your jaw was practically on the floor before uraraka tapped you on the shoulder.
“what happened?” she quietly asked from your right.
“I..” you didn’t know what to say either before you lightly shook your head and stepped forward to pull your classmate away from the pale-faced first year. whispers and murmurs began to resonate around you. you were stopped in your tracks when shinsou spoke up.
“you talk about her again and you’ll find the trouble you’re looking for” he pulled the underclassman closer by his collar, his words purposely seeping with venom. all the first year could do was nod and frantically leave with the gen course student after shinsou let him go. from where you stood, you could see shinsou continue to glare at the two until they were out of view. he scoffed and turned around to face you and your jaw-slacked friends.
people in the hallway began to mind their own business as footsteps and loud chatter were heard again. shinsou raised an eyebrow at the three of you, not including todoroki. he had a mix of a look of confusion and pride on his face, a huge contrast to you, midoriya, and uraraka whose jaws were practically on the floor. shinsou opened his mouth to talk, but uraraka and midoriya beat him to it.
“what was that?!” the two of them exclaimed in unison. earning a wince from shinsou and you, given that you were standing right beside the two. you subtly stepped to the side, slightly moving away from them as you continued to keep your eyes on shinsou in front of you.
“the guy was talking shit, what’d you expect me to do” he said it as if the answer was obvious. midoriya was about to question him more when todoroki insisted that they have to head to the cafeteria already if they didn’t want to miss their lunch. he had a point, and so you all obliged.
as you all made your way to the cafeteria again, your steps were slow and you walked behind the group. you still pondered on everything that just happened, not believing that your friends could move on from it so quickly. why would shinsou do that? was it specifically because you were the one being talked about? or was he really just set on defending a friend? no, you weren’t that close. not yet, atleast. as questions continued to pop into your mind, little did you know that shinsou was starting to walk slowly, carefully trying to match your pace. you had only noticed when he lowered his head to meet your eyes.
“you okay?” his voice was laced with genuine concern as he continued to walk beside you, his eyes still trying to meet yours. you jumped, not expecting to hear a voice right beside you. you only had eye contact with him for a second before you lowered your head again. the sudden interaction flustered you, especially after what happened by the lockers just earlier. with the lack of a response from you, shinsou continued to talk.
“sorry about earlier. I acted on impulse, I hope I didn’t weird you out.” hearing that, you raised your head again to look at him. only he wasn’t looking at you anymore. his left hand was on the back of his neck as his eyes were drawn to the floor. you stopped walking and and shinsou quickly noticed you weren’t right beside him anymore. he stopped walking and turned around to face you. the brainwash hero was taken aback when you clutched onto your stomach and began to giggle.
“jeez, shinsou, didn’t know you were the funny type” you said in between laughs. confusion was apparent in his features as you wiped the tears from your eyes.
“you quite literally almost fought for me. why the hell would I be weirded out by that? I should thank you, I almost slapped the guy myself. you saved me from the trouble with nezu, y’know.” shinsou’s confusion was instantly replaced with a look of relief, a small smile now gracing his lips. he shoved his hands in his pockets before meeting your eyes again. even after risking the chance of a punishment because of what happened with the first year earlier, he still had it in him to spare you a smile.
“thanks, I guess. I was nervous I might’ve made the wrong first impression with you already.” you raised a brow at that.
“oh? the hitoshi shinsou worried about making a good first impression on me?” you began to walk forward, intending to stand right in front of shinsou.
“I mean, you are one of the so called “cool kids” of UA. why wouldn’t I?” he challenged, taking a small step closer so his face was right in front of yours.
“yeah yeah whatever, kid.” you stepped to the side and began to make your way to the cafeteria again, shinsou following right beside you.
“for real though, don’t worry about it. I’d do the same for you if ever the opportunity came.” as you continued to walk side by side, you placed your elbow on shinsou’s shoulder. you side eyed him, trying to gauge his reaction.
“would you now?” he met your eyes again. he had a teasing tone, but the gentle smile was still on his face.
“duh! as long as you fight for me, you could bet a million dollars I’m fighting for you as long as I’m still around.”
“well then I’ll gladly do it over and over again. just for you.”
a/n: hope this turned out fine! tysm for requesting elle!!<3 'm so sorry I sort of left out the actual fighting part, I was too much of a coward to write it because I didn't know how to write fights at all 😭🙏🏻

the early morning made its peaking cracks of sunshine as y/n arose in her bed.
she rubbed her eyes awake, hands reaching for her phone for the time.
[ 7:48 am ] — it read.
the girl groaned out a sigh. ‘whose idea was it to register for a 9am class again?’ she thought before swiping her screen to check her missed notifications. almost immediately, she jumped out of her blanket when finding a text from her friend, sunghoon.
hoonster :) :
y/n, you awake??
Wake up loser, I’m on the way
You better be awake when I come
“aw shit!” she yelled, pushing her tired body.
in a rush, y/n exhibited loud thuds of footsteps as she ran back and forth from the bathroom to get ready.
“don’t be here yet, don’t be here yet!” she uttered under her breath.
her hands shakily found some casual clothes once she was done with the bathroom area.
just then, her phone furiously buzzed.
“hello??” she spoke.
“hey loser, you ready yet?” she heard sunghoon ask on the other side.
immediately, her heart thumped. she felt the butterflies of a high school type of crush hit her stomach. she swallowed down her feelings for her friend as she murmured, “you’re already here?”
hoon gave a quiet chuckle that exerted more butterflies to flood her abdomen. “yes dummy, i’m waiting at the front of your house. hurry up, we’re gonna be late!”
y/n groaned out a sigh after coming into the realization that her crush was still her asshole friend after all. “okay, okay! i’m coming out now!” she yelled, digging her feet into her favorite shoes before running out.
a few seconds later and sunghoon found the girl he’s liked since high school burst out of her house. a half smile tugged at his lips as he watched her quietly fume out a few words that he figured was most likely about being late.
his eyes formed into half moon crescents in a glistening look, heart and mind directly falling in the thought of being in her presence.
his car doors clicked and in came y/n.
she huffed out a few breaths of air before buckling her seat in. “now why the hell did i choose a 9am class??” her hand reached to her chest, feeling her heart beat like crazy.
sunghoon chuckled. he was in complete love and there was no doubt about that. “because you wanted a class with me, loser.” he joked, hands reaching down to his cup holder.
the girl shot him a glare — “excuse me? you were the one who said ‘let’s do chemistry 2A together,’ and now we’re both struggling!”
he cackled out another laugh as he merged the car into the next lane. “yeah yeah, you know you wanted that class with me.”
y/n huffed out a sigh in annoyance. “hoon, i swear-“
“got you some coffee, i know you’ll probably need it.” he said, quickly cutting her morning anger off.
there it was again. that nervous sensation bubbling inside of her. “you did??” her head tilted down to find her attractive friend hand her the cup of coffee.
this is what friends did right? pick them up? get them coffee? have a class together? surely, sunghoon thought of her just as a friend?
no. the two were idiots in love, but they liked it. the mixed signals. the chemistry. the tension. they loved the game of push and pull, and it became obvious to everyone but them.
“don’t act so surprised,” the handsome male intruded her thoughts. “i’m nice to you.”
y/n automatically scoffed at his words. “nice?? you are anything but nice, park sunghoon.”
the car screeched to a stop with a red light in front of them, causing him to glance back at her. “so if i’m not nice to you, what’s this then? picking you up, hm?” one of his thick brows raised in question as his inner lips softly curled.
the girl had to look away with how handsome he looked. just a simple stare could set her heart off.
“shut up, hoon. we’re friends, this is what we do.” she playfully rolled her eyes as he widened his smile.
“yeah.. friends.” he murmured. his heart lightly sank at the friend zone but he couldn’t dare to do anything else other than stare back at the road. “take the coffee, will you? i need to drive, unless you want us to crash.”
y/n gasped at his suicidal joke but quickly turnt it into a mount of giggles. “do it, sunghoon! crash us! i don’t want to go to chemistry.”
sunghoon immersed into laughter as well, shaking his head at how his favorite girl just joked about death. “sorry, looks like we have to make it through another day of torture.”
she sighed. “fine but if the professor asks why we’re late, i’m blaming you.”
“right back at you,” he snorted with a head shake, causing the girl to nudge his arms.
y/n rolled her eyes before turning her attention to her phone.
jake’s girl 🫂:
are you guys almost here??
sunoo’s been wondering
y/n <33:
almost!
well tell sunoo to hold on bc we still have to find parking!
jake’s girl 🫂:
girl your class starts in like 20 minutes!
jungwon’s bae 🩶:
Just get your butt over here!
hee’s fav 🤍:
hee and i are about to leave before you guys show
y/n <33:
LMFAOO we’ll be there soon!
“hurry up, hoon! they’re waiting!”
sunghoon made a ‘tsk’ noise with his tongue as he said, “i can’t go pass the speed limit here y/n. what do you want me to do?”
she groaned out a sigh before crossing her arms. “geez hoon, you’re driving like a grandma.”
“i’m sorry, speedy, i don’t want to get a ticket this early in the morning.”
the girl smiled as she watched him pull up to a parking spot. “finallyy! you parked far but..,”
“just shut up and walk, loser.” he responded, ruffling her hair before walking out of the car.
she clicked her tongue as she obeyed, slinging her heavy bag around her shoulders. as she did so, she felt the weight suddenly relieve off of her.
y/n turned her direction to where her friend was, and found him carrying her bag.
“hoon what-“
“i can see you practically struggling and well.. you’re weak so i’ll carry it for you.”
she rolled her eyes before letting him in proceed. “that’s sweet but that’s still asshole-like.”
hoon chuckled at her words as he held her bag around his shoulders. “come on, we’re gonna be late.”
the two rushed to their friend group, legs speeding through campus to find them huddled in a corner.
“finally! you guys took so long,” min-su groaned.
y/n laughed before sending a smack to her arms. “shut up, we’re here now!” she yelled back as she gave a soft nudge.
sunghoon chuckled, laying his arm on his friend’s shoulder in comfort. “she woke up late as usual,” he said, ruffling his own hair. “that’s why you don’t see her with her usual makeup on.”
the girl took offending, gasping in shock before harshly hitting his arm. “i hope that bruises, loser!” she cackled out a laugh as she proudly nodded.
hoon rubbed his arm while displaying a smile on his face. “never, i’m too strong.” he teased with a shit eating grin.
the group shared their laughs before ji-woo intruded — “stop being lovey dovey, your class starts soon!”
y/n groaned, ignoring her teasings about her and sunghoon as she replied, “you just had to remind me..,”
“shut up and go!” her friend yelled back, pushing her arm with a wide smile.
soon, y/n, sunghoon, and sunoo walked to their dreaded chemistry class while the others stayed together.
“why don’t we just ditch??” the girl murmured in a pout.
“you know we can’t y/n,” sunoo scowled.
“you guys suck.”
“just stay for the lecture, our exam is next week anyway,” responded sunghoon.
before she could give another remark, the three entered in the class.
with them being a little late, scattered seats filled the room, causing the three to separate. sunghoon and sunoo sat near each other while y/n sat about two seats away from them.
she huffed out a soft sigh as she plopped down. “let’s just go through this for the day..,” she murmured to herself.
hoon glanced at her from afar, pupils basically forming heart shapes in his eyes that had sunoo scoffing. his attention landed on the male who was only shaking his head.
“what?” sunghoon seethed through a clenched jaw.
“nothing.. loverboy.” sunoo snorted in a laugh afterwards, causing an irritating sigh to come out of hoon’s mouth.
“don’t call me that.”
“it fits you, surprised she hasn’t noticed yet with how much you stare at her.”
the older male quietly fumed in his seat, rolling his eyes as sunoo was spurting out every ticklish bone in his body.
“seriously, hoonie” sunoo teased — “she’s gonna notice at some point.”
“shut up,” sunghoon harshly whispered back, hands almost raising to send a smack like y/n always does.
“see? you’re picking up on her habits too.”
right when hoon was about to speak, the professor intruded in with a clear throat, hinting that class would be starting in seconds.
“deny it all you want, but you like the girl.” the younger boy softly said with a lean towards him. “don’t take too long though, someone else might steal her.”
sunghoon’s head popped up. he instantly looked at his friend with confusion/betrayal plastered across his face.
“not me, dumbdumb.” sunoo tilted his head towards y/n. “look who’s talking to her.”
almost immediately, hoon found his close friend talking to sanha — a guy in their class who was a few years older. he sat next to her, taking the empty seat and made small talk towards her.
“sanha??” he repeated the name with a scoff.
“you don’t have to be so obvious about your jealousy.”
“i’m not jealous,” hoon lied, an oblivious amount of red tinted on his ears.
the taller male began to ignore the remaining words sunoo spewed out, tuning it away so he could distract himself from the hurtful sight.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
when what felt like long hours had finally passed, students scattered out of the class.
y/n stayed behind as usual, taking her time to gather her things when sanha approached her.
“hey, you said your name was y/n right?” he asked with glistening eyes.
“yeah, yours was.. sanha?”
her response that turned into a question caused a chuckle to erupt out of the tall boy.
“sorry, i have bad memory.” y/n quickly defended, allowing him to holler out a few more laughs.
“you’re okay, don’t worry. i was just wondering if we could exchange numbers? just if you want to have a study session together or something.”
the girl stood still in her stance. she’s never really been approached this way before. even if he was just being friendly, it’s definitely been a bigger step to how guys were upfront with her.
“oh.. yeah, sure!” y/n reached down for her phone and gave him the desired phone number.
it was then that sunghoon and sunoo walked in on the scene. “you ready?” the shorter male asked with lips pressing into a line.
“yeah, let me just finish this up.”
hoon took a quick glance down to her hands; watching how they softly grazed against some strangers burned his heart. he felt his blood boiling at how she was so politely nice to sanha.
“we don’t have all day,” he grumbled, causing a confused and annoyed glare to be shot at him from y/n.
she quickly turned back to sanha with an apologetic smile. “sorry, they’re in a rush more than usual. i’m always the one who has to rush them,” she cheekily said.
the older boy reflected the smile back as he warmly replied, “don’t worry, y/n, i can wait all day for you.”
sunghoon’s ears perked up at his words. ‘what is he trying to do? flirt with her?’ he thought to himself with a clear scoff in his throat.
the puff of air that left his mouth caused the three heads to turn to him. sunoo cackled out a laugh, hands on his mouth to shut himself up with amusement. he hit hoon’s chest while murmuring, “sorry he’s really cranky, he didn’t wake up on the right side of the bed today.”
y/n’s head cocked to the side. ‘but he seemed perfectly fine today,’ she thought. what an idiot.
“um, okay… well just text me when you want a study session.” she said to sanha, who began to furiously blush, pissing sunghoon off even more.
“hurry up, you’re taking a long time.” the boy who was jealous uttered in an eye roll.
she sent a glare towards him before turning her head back to sanha in a smile. “see you soon, sanha.”
he beamed an ear-to-ear grin to her before nodding and taking off from the scene.
“couldn’t have been more obvious that he liked you?” hoon unintentionally blurted in an eye roll.
“are you okay or what? why are you suddenly so bitter?” y/n shot to him with a side eye.
“yeah hoon, what’s wrong? cant handle seeing your friend get hit on?” sunoo intervened, raising his brows ever so slightly to display how much of an asshole he was being. he slung an arm around the girl, bringing her closer in his embrace as they walked out.
sunghoon let out a ‘pft’ before walking side by side with them. “why wouldn’t i be able to handle it? i’m shocked that some guy was even willing to ask for her number.” he said, causing a harsh push to be made from y/n.
“uh do i act like this when some girl asks you out?? no, i help you by giving advice..,” she rolled her eyes, ignoring the burning sensation in her heart before scooting her body closer to sunoo’s — allowing him to just chuckle alongside their bicker.
hoon huffed out a sigh. “can’t give you advice on this one then. sorry, loser.” he murmured. his attempt to play it cool was stupid, but the girl still bought into it with how annoying he was being.
“i didn’t ask for your advice, did i?” y/n snickered, causing another holler to be heard from sunoo.
sunghoon rolled his eyes and poked his tongue through his cheek. he hated how close she was suddenly becoming with their friend. usually, she’d be in his arms, his presence, and his care.
but all he could do for now was make snarky comments about some guy that asked for her number.
“so what? you’re gonna go out with this guy now? he’s gonna come to our hangouts now?” the annoyed boy half-heartedly joked, trying to let it come off as something playful with an awkward laugh.
his words only made sunoo and y/n look at each other. and with that, it only filled every inch of his body with more jealousy. he was a protective boy, what can he say?
he wanted to pull the girl he liked back into his arms but as much as he wanted to do so, they were still only friends — friends who joked and pushed each other around, not hugged.
so he scoffed once he realized it got quiet after what he said.
“what? our group is already big enough.”
“don’t tell me.. you’re jealous?” y/n replied, brows knitting together in shock.
sunghoon’s face began to blush in red, heart racing at how she suddenly figured him out. “what?? no. you’re stupid for thinking that.” smooth, sunghoon, real smooth.
she scoffed out a laugh as sunoo remained giggling. “you can admit it, i know you’re jealous.” she said with a tinting red starting to hit her cheeks as well.
her heart dropped at the thought that her longtime friend could be just ever so slightly jealous with who she was talking to. with their passing years of friendship, he never really took interest in her love life — or at least that’s what she thought.
the girl would tell him and he’d do his best in hyping her up, but she always secretly wished that he was the one she was excited about (and he did too).
but yet again, they were idiots in love.
“so are you gonna admit it?” she poked.
sunghoon rolled his eyes, jaw clenching with how well his favorite girl was provoking him. “what is there to admit?” he seethed.
sunoo laughed at his reaction. “geez, hyung, you don’t need to get too mad here.”
a scoff came out of the older male. “sunoo, stay out of this.” he murmured with a turned head.
y/n immediately took notice of hoon’s uncomfortable state and felt the need to stop. her light manner of stupid, silly jokes halted as she uttered — “okay let’s move on from this. should we meet with the others?”
“aren’t they in different classes right now?” sunoo asked, also attempting to move on from what just happened.
“well ji-woo’s in psych right now, i think min-su and dae are free, heeseung’s with them, jake’s in philosophy & ethnics, and jungwon’s in microbiology. and jay and niki are in.. forensics i think?”
sunoo and sunghoon looked at her in bewilderment.
“what?”
“do you just know everyone’s schedule or what?” hoon asked, mouth gaping open in shock.
y/n sent a quick smack to his arms. there’s the girl he knew. “i have their schedule in my notes, don’t judge me! i just want to know our available times..,”
her crush grinned, eyes twinkling in delight of how thoughtful she was. “looking at everyone else’s schedule.. you’re such a loser.” he teased, smiling wide at her defended gasp.
she continued to bully him with a mount of insults and hits. sunoo watched it happen, shaking his head at how he suddenly began third wheeling.
“okay, okay, enough! dae and them are near us, let’s go meet them.” he intervened, swatting a hand between the two.
sunghoon’s heart filled with joy as he ruffled her hair. he heard her give a soft grumble, smacking his hand away that only caused him to laugh even more.
the three continued like this until they eventually reached the others.
“you guys got here a little late..,” dae murmured, side eyeing them.
“sorry, we got held back because some guy wanted her number.” sunghoon responded, feeling a hint of jealousy seep through.
min-su and dae immediately bopped their heads up. “oh??” they asked in unison, earning a chuckle from their friend.
“it’s nothing, this cute guy was just sitting next to me the entire lecture and asked for my number at the end.” y/n replied with a shrug to her shoulders.
“girl, nothing???” dae guffawed.
“cute? mm, i’ll have to see about that,” min-su added in.
with that, her boyfriend, heeseung shot his head up. “you want to see another cute guy when your boyfriend’s right here?” he pouted, causing his girl to melt right at the spot.
“no, baby, i just have to make sure he’s good for her!” she quickly defended.
the group giggled at the couples quarrel before sunoo intruded — “his name’s sanha though.”
sunghoon subtly rolled his eyes but it didn’t go unnoticed by heeseung. the older male looked at him in the eyes that spoke — ‘this must be bothering you huh?’ but hoon chose to ignore and act like he didn’t see it.
“hmm.. sanha.. do you have a picture?” dae questioned.
“she just met the guy, why would she have a picture??” the undeniably jealous guy spoke with anger in his throat.
y/n pushed her brows together before agreeing. “yeah i just met him so i don’t have a picture but..,”
“i guess we can’t see if he’s good for you, y/n..,” dae said. “i do know who’d be good for you though.”
the girl tilted her head to the side. “uh.. who?”
her friend wore a cheeky smile, brows slightly raising as he shifted his gaze to sunghoon, who immediately caught on and began to panic.
“yeah, who is this guy..?” hoon blurted, scratching the back of his nape.
“well he’s been jungwon’s friend for a while now and i’d like it if he had the courage to ask you out, but he’s been too fucking shy.”
y/n looked as if she was confused but she wasn’t stupid. she knew dae was talking about sunghoon, she just wanted him to actually admit it.
“who’s the guy? do i know him?” her coy tone was obvious to min-su and dae, and possibly sunoo but not her crush. no, he stayed oblivious but mainly because he was scared.
as dae was about to speak, sunghoon stopped him — “hey is that jungwon?? that’s him, right?” he pointed behind the boy’s back; and lo and behold, it really was him.
hoon’s ass just got saved and all he could do was sigh out in relief.
while jungwon’s boyfriend ran to the man in the distance, y/n exchanged a look with min-su that could only emphasize their telepathy.
heeseung noticed their look since he was alarmingly close to his girlfriend, and because of that, he spurted out soft laughs.
once jungwon came into everyone’s view, the topic was changed.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
after about an hour, jake texted that he was waiting for ji-woo and eventually, they came together, and then jay and niki as well.
“so are we gonna go eat?” niki asked.
“yes please, i’m starving!” y/n beamed, causing sunghoon’s heart to thud in his chest.
“where at?” jake’s voice spoke, scooting himself closer to his girlfriend’s embrace while pushing his glasses up.
“just anywhere,” min-su replied as her fingers clung around heeseung’s hands.
“okay let’s go to ‘anywhere,’ i heard that place is good!” yelled dae. the stupid joke earned a shrieking laugh from jungwon, popping his dimples as he kept hollering — “that was funny, babe.”
the group laughed as well, maybe not as much as won, but just enough.
eventually, they agreed on some fried chicken place and set out to leave. before doing so, the question that min-su just had to pop to y/n caught everyone’s attention — “so are you gonna bring your boyfriend?” sunghoon shot his head up, thick brows furrowing at the joke.
“boyfriend?? you got a boyfriend and we haven’t even met him yet?” jay instigated with a brow raise.
y/n nervously laughed once she felt aware of everyone’s stares. “that’s what we’re calling him now?”
“what the hell did i miss??” ji-woo asked, turning her head to min-su and dae.
as the two teasingly smiled, a low voice suddenly spewed, “he’s not her boyfriend.”
the attention that was once on y/n had now shifted to the voice that was evidently sunghoon’s. the girl he liked cocked a head tilt in confusion with how upset he sounded while the others were silently judging him.
jungwon had the look of — ‘you’re busted,’ and jake had the look of — ‘too obvious bro,’ whereas heeseung spoke with his eyes that said — ‘min-su and i are definitely debriefing about this later.’
the rest of the members also exchanged glances that were somewhere along the lines of jungwon’s and jake’s.
as they all stared at him, sunghoon’s cheeks flushed with a deep color of red. “i was just um.. there to witness it, they’re not together.” he tried to play it off, but ji-woo was obviously not convinced.
“so you just witnessed it? that’s it?” she questioned towards the awkward male who was just nodding.
hating how quick the atmosphere became awkward, y/n broke the ice by saying, “okay okay, that’s enough. i’m hungry, let’s go.”
the tense moment passed and each couple went in their own transportation (as did sunghoon and y/n), allowing jay to drive sunoo and niki.
while hoon drove, y/n controlled the music.
“oh come on, stop putting this song on.” he grumbled.
“what! come on, it’s cute!” she defended, lightly slapping his arm.
the boy sent a scowling look as he replied, “it’s not cute, it’s sad and depressing.”
“hoon, it’s lily of the valley, how can you hate it??”
“it’s not the vibes right now,” he uttered while making a signal turn.
y/n rolled her eyes. she played the song because it was thee song she associated him with. “fine..,” she groaned, fingers typing fast to change the music.
silence filled the air for a second before another slow and steady song played, causing sunghoon to shoot her another look.
“what!”
“this song is still sad, y/n.”
the song that she put on was ‘everything’ by the black skirts — another song she associated him with.
“excuse me, you like sad songs! that’s what we have in common, loser.” the girl fumed while crossing her arms together.
hoon let out a low chuckle that sent goosebumps down her spine. “play something more upbeat, these songs are like something you slow dance to.” exactly.
her heart pounded at his words before grumbling out a low sigh. “fine… but just because you never shut up about this song.”
a click to another song was made and ‘mad’ by neyo began to boom in the car.
sunghoon instantly wore a huge smile. “that’s more like it!” he beamed, glancing over at her to shine that deathly grin.
y/n felt a butterfly tingle in her stomach but ignored it with her random karaoke session with him.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
soon, the group found themselves gathered around a table with large mounts of fried chicken and fried goods in the center.
“let’s eat!” yelled one of the boys.
everyone began digging in and enjoying the food in front of them.
the couples sat across from each other, being love sick in watching their partner eat and be full on their tummies.
meanwhile, the single friends were in absolute disgust. every face morphed into horror as niki uttered — “we’re trying to eat here, stop that.”
ji-woo rolled her eyes at him as she squished her favorite boy’s cheeks, causing his glasses to slightly fall to the tip of his nose. jake gave a cheeky grin afterward as he muzzled his head further into her hands.
y/n nudged her. “ew ji-woo, don’t do that.”
“we’re cute, shut up.”
the single girl turned her attention to sunghoon who was also mirroring her facial expression. she cracked a laugh as soon as she saw him side eyeing his close friend.
“alright, just because you guys aren’t together, doesn’t mean that you guys can judge us.” min-su murmured. “but that is disgusting, ji-woo.”
the group erupted into harsh laughs afterwards, allowing a few to choke here and there on their chicken.
the night continued on and everyone soon went back to their light jokes about other things.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
eventually, the gang gathered out of the restaurant and left in their separate ways.
the couples left together of course, and jay took niki and sunoo — giving just sunghoon to take y/n home.
“are you gonna play better music?” he asked while getting in the car.
“um.. sure!” she beamed back.
he let out a soft chuckle before driving off to her address.
once the car ride that was filled with endless talks of past high school memories reached its destination (sorry that was long), sunghoon stopped the car with a soft screech.
“so i’ll see you tomorrow?” the tall male asked with a slight eyebrow raise. he leaned his head closer towards her, causing her heart rate to rapidly increase.
she gulped down her saliva before nodding her head. “yes, i’ll be more ready tomorrow..,” she murmured, voice weakening at the end to highlight her vulnerability.
he chuckled at her empty promise — “yeah you keep telling yourself that, i’ll be here around the same time.” his sparkly eyes trailed down from her lips and back to her eyes.
a nervous gulp was taken as he leaned in just an inch closer, leaving an obvious gap between them. the gap that defined their relationship. the clear boundary that was between friends and lovers.
it only lingered for a second before sunghoon pulled away, not letting any suspicions creep in with his feelings for her.
y/n panicked for a second. she felt the yearn for their lips to connect, but she, too, ignored it with the way he pulled away.
the girl rolled her eyes as she slightly smacked his shoulder. “whatever, bye hoonie!” she tried to break the awkward atmosphere.
his cheeks instantly grew red at the name call. she’s only used it on serious occasions and for her to just randomly call him that throbbed his heart.
“b..bye,” he nervously stuttered, mentally smacking his head afterward.
y/n beamed a smile, waving goodbye as she rushed out to avoid any other tension-filled moment.
soon, hoon drove off once confirming that she entered in safely.

a week had now passed, and their exam for chemistry was coming up.
y/n walked into the class, shoulders slumping down as she was reminded of their test. a pout formed on her face while taking her seat next to sanha.
the boy beamed a sweet smile towards her, catching sunghoon’s attention and causing him to almost break his pencil in half.
“hey y/n.”
her head whipped up to sanha in an instant. “since our exam is coming up, i was wondering if we could have a study session soon?”
“oh.. yeah, sure! when did you want to do it?”
hoon’s ears were colored red with every word that was processing through, but still, he was eager to hear more about the plans.
“how about today? are you free?”
“yeah, i should be after 4.” y/n responded, displaying a half smile towards the cute boy.
“okay, i’ll text you where to meet me at the library.”
she nodded in agreement before turning to the professor’s attention.
sunghoon scoffed like he always did, loud and clear. “study session my ass,” he mumbled under his breath.
sunoo laughed at his reaction as he softly ridiculed the older male. y/n didn’t catch on though, remaining attentive to the lecture; while hoon silently fumed in his seat even more.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
when the day was almost coming to an end, y/n found herself already done with the study session.
sanha and her walked out while he apologetically said, “sorry that i’m not able to drop you off, i would but i have to rush home.”
she shook her head at his expression of regret. “don’t be! it’s okay, i’ll find a ride home, a family member will come!” she lied.
he walked away from the scene after uttering out another sorry. in return, she waved goodbye as she huffed out a breath of air.
“i’m alone.. and it’s dark… and i’m on an empty campus.. great!” the girl cursed to herself.
she sighed as she reached for her phone. “my last resort..”
y/n <33:
hoon..
um are you awake…
hoonster :) :
??
It’s 6, of course I’m awake
You need something?
y/n <33:

y/n <33:

hoonster :) :
Yeah I’m on my way
You’re still on campus?
y/n <33:
yeah…
hoonster :) :
Okay I’m coming right now
“that easy?” y/n questioned to herself.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
a few minutes passed and sunghoon pulled up with his car.
a sigh of relief left her mouth as she rushed to her passenger princess seat.
“thank goodness,” the girl mumbled with a clench to her chest.
“so this date of yours couldn’t even take your home?” hoon asked, giving an unbelievable scoff afterwards.
y/n rolled her eyes as he turned into a lane. “shut up. and it wasn’t a date, we just studied together,” she replied while looking out the window.
“you’re saying it wasn’t a date but i saw how you tried to make it subtle in touching up your makeup.” he paused for a second. contemplating whether he should say it or not, he impulsively spoke, “you looked pretty.”
her head quickly shot up. “what?”
“nothing,” the male swiftly shot back. “you really went out with him though?”
her heart began to burn at his question. “i mean.. it was just a study session, nothing more.” she nervously picked at her fingers, nails scratching at the barrier of skin.
a loud ‘pft’ left sunghoon’s mouth. “yeah that’s how it starts, idiot.” jealousy seethed through his body as he poked his tongue through his cheek.
“sunghoon-“
“can i just tell you something real quick?” he asked, letting the car come to a harsh halt at a semi-empty parking lot.
y/n cocked her head. “sure..?”
hoon avoided eye contact for a second, turning his head away once he felt his cheeks heat up.
“you okay..?” he heard his favorite girl ask.
his throat cleared and he finally locked eye contact with her. “i can’t take it anymore, y/n.”
“take what?”
“i can’t stand seeing you talk to some guy you barely know. i can’t stand it, i hate that you’re talking to him like he’s your boyfriend when you…,” he stopped in a breathless voice.
y/n didn’t say anything, hinting that he should continue — “when you should be doing that with me.”
“hoon-“
“i know we’re friends and i know i probably just made matters worse but i can’t stand it anymore. i want you, y/n.“
sunghoon’s hand firmly gripped onto the steering wheel in fear, heart almost beating out of his chest with how abrupt he was being.
“i’m sorry, i understand that you probably don’t like me back but i-“
his constant ranting was shut up with a soft peck on the lips. immediately, his eyes widened and he choked a little on his saliva with how quick the kiss was.
y/n breathed out a laugh at his reaction, grinning wide as she replied, “i like you too.. loser.”
sunghoon bit his lips in an attempt to hide his smile. he was feeling shy for a second before immediately pulling her back onto his lips. they smashed against each others, causing a satisfied groan to leave his throat.
he was finally kissing the girl he’s been liking since high school and all he could do was groan.
his hands cupped her cheeks as hers laid on his shoulders. his lips continued to firmly press against hers before pulling away.
hoon heavily breathed, eyes closing shut at the weighing relief that lifted off of his shoulders.
“like you.. so, so much.” he whispered in her ear.
y/n giggled, feeling the ticklish breath linger around her. “shut up, i heard you.” she teased.
he cackled a laugh as well before bringing his gaze up to her, letting his eyes stare at her heated face.
the girl quickly noticed and nudged his head away. “stop looking at me with those eyes,” she shamed her own head away before glancing at him again.
“what eyes?” sunghoon questioned, brows teasingly raising with a mischievous grin. his eyes trailed up and down as he stayed in a complete daze.
y/n groaned out a sigh as she pushed him away again. “stop it, hoonie.”
he felt blood rush to his cheeks with every heart throb that was taken. that nickname would now permanently be only for her to use.
“call me that again.”
“what? hoonie?” y/n poked, lips curling into a smile.
the male grinned ear to ear before pulling her into another soft kiss.
a second passed and he pulled away.
“i should take you home but i can’t stop kissing you.” he whispered gently against her skin.
“take me on a real date and then you can kiss me all you want.”
his hands intertwined with hers and brought it up to his lips, placing a gentle kiss at the back of it.
“okay i’ll take you on one tomorrow, show you what sanha couldn’t do.”
y/n playfully rolled her eyes — “yeah yeah you do that.”
he kissed her cheek before backing the car out of its parking spot.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
soon, the two arrived to her place late at night, and it was then that sunghoon promised her an actual date for tomorrow.
“i’ll see you tomorrow, gorgeous.”
“gorgeous??” her head bolted at the name, and he only cheekily smiled.
“yeah.. gorgeous.”
“shut up.. good night.” y/n’s cheeks flushed with red as she left the car.
he watched her safely get in and soon drove off with silent giggles and warm heart throbs.
sunghoon and y/n were officially a couple. no more being idiots, and no more being friends.

December 25th, 1988.
The airport was shockingly empty, most folks at home with their loved ones in celebration of the holiday. Eddie’s eyes scanned the building as he walked, rolling his small suitcase full of his belongings behind him. His free hand clutching his guitar case as he walks along. He’d packed everything he could over the last few days, though he truthfully didn’t have all that much. Honestly, he was grateful for the light load. The mental burden he was carrying felt excruciating enough on its own.
It had been a teary goodbye with Wayne, Eddie promising to call and Wayne promising to come visit whenever he could afford to spend the money. Eddie assured him he’d be paying for his plane ticket whenever he wanted to come out, and not to worry.
The conversation he’d had with you the previous night wouldn’t leave his head, your tears as your voice screamed at him was a scene that played on a loop in his mind. Sleeping was no use; the second he’d gotten home he’d laid in bed and cried, every moment of the night spent tossing and turning and thinking about you. As hard as it was, though, he wanted you to be able to move forward and be fine without him. He hadn’t meant to hurt you so badly and he hoped that in time you’d see that, too.
He blinks a few times, forcing the sleep from his eyes as he sits on a cold plastic seat, waiting for his gate to board. His foot taps aimlessly on the shiny linoleum floor, his hands wrung together between his knees as he sits hunched over in thought. The clicking of heels takes him out of his daze, his head glancing upwards to catch the person that walks by. From behind, it looks just like you — the girl even has the same coat as you. His heart thumps in his chest as he cranes his neck to get a better look, his legs ready to stand and chase you down and hold you tight. But then, the figure turns around, and he catches sight of a face that isn’t yours. He slumps back onto the seat, exhaling a breath he wasn’t aware he’d been holding in. Maybe this was all wrong. Maybe he shouldn’t do this. And then:
“Flight 157 to Chicago now boarding, please report to Gate 2A,” a voice comes over the loud speaker, sounding crisp and nearly robotic.
Eddie sighs, wiping his clammy palms on his jeans before he stands, turning and walking to his gate. He steps onto his flight, sinking in his seat and glancing out the window at the snow that covers the Indianapolis airport. The last glimpse he’ll get of Indiana for who knows how long.
He pulls out his Walkman, slipping the headphones over his ears and sinking into the music as the plane takes off. This is goodbye.
Present Day: December 21st, 1989.
The airport is bustling with people; strangers from god knows where coming to visit god knows who for the approaching holiday. Eddie weaves his way through the crowds, pushing his bags on a cart that serves as an easy way to part the seas of travelers. Doors are held open for him by a passer-by as he exits the building, pulling his hat down further over his ears as he braces for the cold chill of the Indiana air.
Stepping onto the concrete outside of the building, his eyes squint slightly as he scans the pickup lane for a familiar vehicle. He doesn’t spot one at first, standing on his tip-toes and peering around the heads of other people, trying to find who he’s looking for.
And then, he sees Wayne leaning out the driver side door of his truck. A hand is held high in the air, waving with a stoic smile on his face. Eddie runs. He doesn’t care if he looks silly, doesn’t care if he bumps someone on his way, he runs to Wayne. His bags sit a few feet away on their cart, but he’ll grab them in a moment. Right now, his arms pull his uncle into a tight hug, his body easing up when he feels Wayne patting him on the back.
“Missed you, son,” Wayne says, pulling back to look at Eddie with the vaguest hint of tears in his eyes.
“Missed you too. Don’t go crying on me now, old man,” he says, laughing when Wayne tugs his hat off to ruffle his already-fluffy hair.
“Go get your bags, let’s go on home.”
Home. Eddie loves the sound of that.
•
“I feel like I’m broken, Jonathan,” you stress, setting your coffee down on the table. “Everywhere I go, everything I do, my mind is just like… laser-focused on Eddie. It’s pathetic,” you shake your head, curling your lips inward.
“Hey, stop. It’s not pathetic,” he reassures, reaching out a hand to cover one of yours. “You just… miss him. It’s normal.”
“Nothing about this is normal,” you retort, sorry for snapping at him but unable to control the bubbling frustration. “I should be able to move on, it’s been a fucking year just about!” you say, raising your voice and grabbing attention of other patrons in the cafe. Your eyes avert Jonathan’s gaze, looking down at a stray thread from your sweater in embarrassment. “I saw a van that looked like his. A van! A vehicle — a common, average vehicle and it sent me into a spiral the other day. Something that stupid shouldn’t make me feel like I’m losing it.”
“Sunny, come on, you’re so hard on yourself,” he says, his honey eyes sympathetic as they try to break through to you.
“Why shouldn’t I be? I’m always such a downer, it has to get annoying to deal with. You’re always left to pick up my pieces.”
“Don’t say that, you’re not annoying,” he cuts in, brows furrowed.
“Oh come on, Jonathan. You can be honest with me,” you insist, turning away from him.
“I am being honest. Do you remember what I told you last Christmas? When you told us all that he’d left?”
Do you remember, he asks. As if you could ever forget.
December 25th, 1988.
To be honest, you were surprised you’d even managed to get yourself to Steve’s house. You drove here on autopilot, a robot operating your vehicle instead of a person — navigating the snowy streets with ease only because you know this town like the back of your hand. You sit in your car in the driveway for what feels like a century, trying to steady your breathing. You had wanted to prepare yourself — to have a plan when you walked in and to break the news calmly to everybody. Though now you’re realizing that may not be possible, with the way you feel like you can’t even speak at all. Your chest is tight, your breathing erratic as you finally walk up to the large front doors, pushing one open without so much as knocking.
The conversation inside lulls, everyone excitedly looking to see who’s arrived. You’ve never seen a group of faces change expressions so quickly, Nancy hopping up off of the sofa to run to you. In a split second, you’ve drained all of the holiday cheer from the room. Tears run down your face like they had been all night, your body slumping into Nancy’s when she collects you in her arms.
“Hey, hey, what’s going on? What happened!?” she asks, trying to stay calm for your sake but concern creeps into her voice anyways. You can’t blame her, you know you look a wreck.
No one else dared move further than simply standing from their seats, not wanting to crowd you. It’s like everyone knew a bomb was about to drop.
“I-it’s, it’s E-Eddie,” you sob, having at least enough mental clarity to realize you need to finish that sentence before they think he died on the way here. “Eddie left… h-he left Hawkins, he f-ucking left,” you choke, your voice raw as you get the words out. You’re bawling into Nancy’s sweater, tears and snot surely soaking the wool as she holds you impossibly tighter.
“What?” Steve asks, “What… what do you mean?”
“He’s going to Chicago, he’s… not c-coming back,” you cry, heaving between words as you try to fill your lungs with air.
The whole room freezes, everyone looking at each other with no idea what to do. As sad as they all may be, each and every person realizes how much worse this is for you. And you know it. They all know what you had with Eddie was special. Was.
You look up at them, watery eyes scanning the room and taking in their mutual devastation. Dustin sits back down on the couch, his head in his hands as he absorbs the information. His role model, the big brother he never had, gone.
And then you look at Steve, watching the way he starts to pace the floor. His closest male friend since Tommy, left for another state. Another person leaving his life.
Your eyes scan over the rest of the kids, over Robin, Jonathan, then circling back to Nancy. Their upset makes it worse for you, and your stomach twists in knots over the fact that you had to be the one to tell them this news. You, in the midst of your anguish, had to break it to all of them. Too caught up in your own feelings to break the news gracefully, it makes you want to vomit.
That’s when you’d pulled yourself away from Nancy, out of her gentle grasp, and hurried down the hallway to one of Steve’s bathrooms. You heard the concerned calls of your name as you shut the door behind you but it didn’t matter, you couldn’t take watching everyone process the information. You brace your hands on the vanity counter, fingers gripping the marble as you look at yourself in the mirror. Your eyes and lips look puffy, snot drips from your nose — it makes you feel pathetic. You watch as your whole body shudders when you inhale, trying so hard to calm yourself down, at least so you can go back out there and actually talk to your friends without heaving on the floor.
A knock on the door makes you wince.
“I’m fine,” you croak. “Just give me a minute.”
“It’s Jonathan,” his soft voice says from the other side. “Can I please come in?”
You weren’t expecting him to come chasing after you, out of all of them. It’s not unwelcome, just unexpected. Your fingers wrap around the doorknob, twisting it and pulling the door open a crack. Jonathan slips inside, his slender body fitting right through the narrow opening you’d provided.
“I’m sorry,” you start. “I know I need to explain everything more and—”
“Don’t. That’s not what I’m here for. No one’s rushing you out, it’s okay,” he soothes you, his voice as gentle as always.
For some reason, his comfort only makes you cry harder, and he immediately accepts your form with open arms. You don’t typically get this close to Jonathan, he’s shy and introverted and you can confidently say you’ve never shared a moment this raw with him. His chin rests atop your head, holding you against his chest as you tremble.
“It’s okay. It’s gonna be okay, Sunny.”
“How do you know that?” you sniffle, mouth gummy as you talk.
“Because we’re all here for each other. We’re all here for you. I know you and Eddie were… close,” he says, debating on his last word before speaking it softly.
“He kissed me,” you say — blurting it, really.
“What?”
“Like a week ago. He kissed me. And now he’s gone.”
Jonathan doesn’t say anything, but it’s okay with you. You don’t know what he could say that would make any of it better. ‘I’m sorry’? You don’t want to hear that. The kiss with Eddie was the best kiss you’ve ever had. I’m sorry would just make the grief of him being gone feel more real. He just holds you a little bit tighter, sighing into your hair.
“If you could… keep that between us, for now…” you say, realizing you don’t think you can handle questions from the group about that just yet.
“Yeah. Yeah, of course.”
It’s silent for a few moments after that, neither of you saying a thing. But then he speaks up again.
“Listen,” he says, pulling away from you slightly, his hands gripping your shoulders as he looks at you. “I’m here for you, if you need anything. You can vent, scream, cry… it doesn’t matter. I wasn’t as close with Eddie as you were, or as Dustin was, or Robin… the point is, I’ll be okay through this. I’ll miss him, of course, but I’ll be okay. It’s you I’m worried about,” he pours all of this out at once, his eyes flicking back and forth between each of yours, studying your face. “I just want you to know you can tell me anything, always. I promise.”
Your lip wobbles, your eyes glassy as they stare back at him. You realize, then, just how much Jonathan observes. He might be quieter, more reserved, but he notices everything. His tone of voice tells you he knows more than he might share out loud.
“Thank you,” you say, impossibly quiet. “Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it, but…”
“No, you don’t even need to thank me. I just want you to promise me that you won’t hide away and bottle this all up.”
“I won’t. I promise.”
Present Day: December 21st, 1989.
You kept that promise, confiding in him when the weight of it all felt too heavy to hold. He kept his word, listening every single time you needed him to. You’re suddenly upset with yourself for even doubting his honesty, his willingness to support you.
“Of course I remember. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude,” you sigh. You pitch your voice deeper, then, mocking him. “Don’t apologize, Sunny, you never need to apologize,” you tease, knowing exactly what he’ll say before it can come out of his mouth.
“Wow, am I that predictable?” he laughs, raising an eyebrow at you.
You just nod, laughing a little bit with him.
“You know, you’re still the only person I’ve ever told about the kiss.”
“I know. I definitely would’ve heard about it from one of the girls if word had gotten around,” he says, smirking.
There’s a pause. The humor of the moment is gone.
“What’s on your mind?” he asks, sensing the shift.
“I just… it’s getting closer and closer to the day he left. And I don’t know how I can handle knowing it’s been one full year. I just want things to be easy again,” you sigh, chewing on your bottom lip. You don’t want to meet Jonathan’s eyes, feeling like you’ll cry if you see the sincerity you know will be there.
“I know it’s hard. And I know Christmas isn’t going to be easy for you this year. But just… take it a day at a time. A minute at a time, even,” he says, calm and steady as always. “Even though this year has been hard for you, you’ve gotten through it. You’ve made it through every single hard day. You can get through the holiday, I promise,” he gives you a gentle smile, the creases at the corner of his eyes showing how genuine it is.
His words bring the tears you had tried to warn off to your eyes, sending a couple droplets running down your cheeks.
“Are you sure I can do this?” you ask. “Will it get better?”
“I know you can do this. And I think it will.”
You stand, your chair squeaking against the floor as it pushes out. He stands with you, knowing what you’re going for without words. He pulls you into a tight hug when you round the table to his side, his hands rubbing your back in a way that soothes you.
“Thank you for everything, Jon,” you sniffle, your face smushed against the thick knit fabric of his sweater.
“Of course. ‘S what I’m here for,” he says, resting his chin on your head before placing the softest, most chaste kiss to the top of it.
It’s nothing but platonic. Simply a comforting gesture, you’d never question otherwise. You pull away after a moment of letting him hold you, the strange feeling that someone had been watching you creeping up your spine.
•
Pulling in to Forest Hills Trailer Park had simultaneously made Eddie’s heart sing, and made him feel like he was going to vomit. He was excited, so excited to be out of Chicago, but he’d be lying if simply leaving that city eliminated all of his worries. There’s a lot of… baggage in Hawkins. He left for a reason. It’s scary and inviting and anxiety-inducing and wonderful all wrapped into one package.
Wayne helps him unload his stuff, and Eddie nearly cries when he steps into the trailer again. The bedroom is all made up for him, his old posters and flags still hung on the walls. Like Wayne always knew he wasn’t truly gone for good, or maybe he just didn’t want to fully let him go. A knock comes on the open door, making Eddie turn from his spot on the floor where he unpacks his suitcase.
Wayne stands in the doorway, holding Eddie’s Garfield mug — his favorite — in his hands.
“Made you some coffee, figured you might need it,” he says, and Eddie accepts the warm mug gladly.
He looks at the paint on it, Garfield’s nose chipping away a bit, and there’s a crack on one side, but it’s Eddie’s. It’s home.
Unpacking doesn’t last long, he gets through one suitcase of clothes before deciding everything else can wait. His dresser drawers are packed full once more, having been largely empty save for some of Wayne’s things. Sitting cross-legged on his floor, he takes a moment to just absorb every detail of his room. His Slayer flag, that he’d left here in favor of taking his Corroded Coffin one with him. His spare amps, his old sketchbooks and a box of D&D dice. The stupid handcuffs he’d stolen as a teen, and then had a few good nights with. Chuckling to himself, he stands. His heart longs to see more of Hawkins, to see what’s changed since he left, if anything at all. He puts on his coat and a hat, grabbing the keys to his van that he surprisingly missed way more than he had thought he would.
“I’m going in to town, just want to walk around a little bit. Take everything in. You wanna come?” he asks his uncle, slipping his shoes on in the doorway.
“Nah. Go on by yourself. I’m sure you could use the time to get readjusted.”
Eddie nods, giving Wayne a soft smile and receiving a softer one in return. He tosses his keys in the air once, catching them with a metallic clank before he’s out the door. Wayne had taken great care of the van, as good of care as you can take to a shitbox vehicle, and as Eddie slips into the tattered driver’s seat he lets out a sigh. His hands run over the steering wheel, putting the key in the ignition and letting the engine roar to life.
He missed this. He truly missed this.
It’s funny how you can be away from a place for so long, yet still remember every detail like it’s engraved in your brain. Sure, a year isn’t that long in retrospect, but still. The way Eddie drives the streets of the small town with complete ease, never second guessing a turn and knowing where each stop sign is makes him smile a little bit. He drives past your apartment complex, taking in a deep and shaky breath as he glances in its direction. The realization hits him that he has to face you, face everyone, for the first time in a year. He doesn’t know how he’s gonna do it, but he’ll figure it out.
For now, he pulls his van into a parking spot beside the curb in the center of town, stepping out and waiting for that signature creak of the van’s door as it opens, which doesn’t come. Dammit, Wayne. Keeping her in good condition.
To be honest, Eddie knows he’s taking a bit of a risk walking through town. He could run into you, he could run into one of the kids, or Steve or Robin or anyone. He could be spotted by Mrs. Wheeler or Hopper. All of whom would spread word that he’s back in town. He’s flying by the seat of his pants here, so to speak. If he runs into someone he knows, he’ll figure it out. If he runs into you, well… he’ll probably shit himself. But he’ll cross that bridge when he gets there.
The streets and shops of downtown Hawkins are perfectly decorated for the holiday, a sight he knows you always loved to see. He hopes it still makes you happy, to see the town wrapped in red and green and silver and gold. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he walks the snowy sidewalks, a cleanly shoveled path guiding his way. It’s snowing lightly, a few flakes clinging to his hair and melting on his coat. It’s so unlike the hustle and bustle of Chicago, and while those busy streets were exciting for maybe a week, he grew weary of them after that. There’s less of a sense of security in a city that large, whereas Hawkins’ small population and quaint streets feel stable and safe. Maybe he took that for granted, maybe he thought he was more unstable here than he really was.
He passes Melvald’s, peeking inside and sure enough catches Joyce Byers passing off a large paper bag of goods to a customer. He keeps on walking, smiling to himself nonetheless over seeing a familiar face. He passes RadioShack, The Hideaway, the record shop. All places he has memories tied to, and they come rushing to him in a flood of varying emotions. Nervous butterflies flutter in the pit of his stomach, his whole body adjusting to being back home as he walks.
The coffee shop is up ahead, he can see the sign dangling above the door. He turns to glance in through the windows as he approaches, but he does a double take at what he sees. Stopping dead in his tracks, his shoes scrape against the pavement. It feels like the wind’s been knocked out of him, every ounce of oxygen punched from his lungs. He swears his head is spinning, or maybe the world is spinning. Every single moment of heartache and yearning over the last year has led him here, back to Hawkins. And now, for the first time in months, he’s finally looking at you.
His mouth hangs open slightly, tunnel vision directing him right to you, where you stand approaching Jonathan. He’s undetected, neither you nor the other man have noticed him. The first thing he notices is that you’re crying, he can see the puffiness of your face and the way its features contort. It reminds him all too much of the way you looked the night he left you. A twinge of pain prods deep in his gut; seeing you cry has always been one of his least favorite things. He watches as Jonathan pulls you into a tight hug, rubbing your back and squeezing you so close to him.
That’s weird, he doesn’t remember you ever being so close with Jonathan. He usually just kept to himself, for the most part.
And then, something happens that makes his heart plummet to the pit of his stomach. Words he can’t hear are exchanged between the two of you, and then Jonathan’s face tilts down, and a kiss is pressed to the top of your head.
He just kissed you. What the fuck. This can’t be happening.
Eddie knows he’s been gone a while, but he certainly hasn’t been gone long enough to forget the different dynamics in the friend group. He’d certainly remember if Jonathan kissed you frequently a year ago.
Are you…. with Jonathan?
Nausea creeps up his throat as he stands there, alone in the cold. He watches his own breath leave his mouth in icy puffs as he stands there gawking. You and Jonathan begin to pull out of the hug, and he kickstarts himself to move the fuck away before you both catch him staring like an absolute buffoon.
It all makes sense, he thinks to himself as he staggers away. It all makes fucking sense.
Of course you’d distanced yourself. Of course you wouldn’t want to talk to him on the phone if you were dating Jonathan. Of course the general topic of you was awkward for your other friends to talk about, because they didn’t want to tell him what was going on! Heading quickly back in the direction of his van, he feels blindsided, his mouth gone dry. He really thinks the contents of his stomach might see the light of day once more as his mind races with thoughts. You don’t want him anymore, you don’t need him anymore, you have Jonathan. And he can’t even be mad, because he wanted you to do better than him. He wanted you to find someone else.
If he could kick his own ass, one year ago, he would.
The urge to cry overwhelms him, but the tears won’t come. It’s like he can’t think straight, too many thoughts yet no thoughts all at once. How can he face you — admit his feelings to you and tell you that he doesn’t think he’s stopped yearning for you for even a single moment of the last year — when you’re with Jonathan? He can’t. That’s not right, and it’s not fair. It makes him sick to think about.
He doesn’t take the time to admire the Christmas decorations anymore, doesn’t take note of the shops he passes that he hasn’t seen in a year. He just hurries to his vehicle, and starts driving towards the only place he can think to go right now.
•
Knuckles rap impatiently on Steve’s door, bone against the wood over and over. Eddie’s not in any mood to wait, needing to know when and why and how this all happened. Why no one bothered to tell him you started dating a mutual friend. This isn’t exactly the way he wanted to announce his arrival back in Hawkins, but oh well. He didn’t make a great departure, who cares if his return sucks too?
He can hear shuffling from inside the house, Robin’s voice coming closer to the door.
“I’m getting it, Steve, holy shit!” she calls, the door knob twisting and the whole thing pulling open.
Eddie stands there, watching her face as she processes the fact that it’s him in front of her right now. He really missed her face.
“Oh my god,” she says, standing there blinking at him like she can’t believe what she’s seeing. “Eddie!? EDDIE!” she yells, her eyes going impossibly wide. “Guys, Eddie’s here!” she screams into the house, eager, before attacking him in a bear hug.
The voices of Steve and Nancy shout “What?” in perfect unison, before their figures appear in the doorway.
“Eddie?” Nancy says, laughing in disbelief as she does, followed by Steve’s half-confused half-amused “Dude!?”
He doesn’t even get the chance to say anything before Nancy’s surprisingly strong grip is yanking him from Robin, her tiny frame squeezing him as tight as she can. Eddie’s heart swells, tears finally threatening to spill from his eyes. The pure happiness of seeing his friends again overwhelms him, but it rivals the sick feeling that resides in his stomach after seeing you with Jonathan. It’s a strange juxtaposition of feelings, and he feels like he might crack.
Steve yanks him away soon after, giving him a firm, welcoming hug and a pat on the back. “I fucking missed you, man.”
Eddie gives him a soft smile as he’s ushered into the large house, Robin’s mouth moving a mile a minute.
“Okay, so what the fuck is happening right now? Are you back for good? When did you get here? Does anyone else even know you’re here?” she bombards him with questions, her arms flailing as she talks.
“Rob, Jesus, slow down,” Eddie says, and he can’t help but laugh lightly. “Yeah, I uh, I think I’m back for good,” he says, letting the information sink in. “Wayne knows I’m here, but that’s it other than you guys.”
Everyone stares at him, sensing the feeling that something’s not quite right. It must be radiating off of him.
“Okay, so… what’s wrong? You haven’t cracked one of your usual jokes and you’re like, mysteriously quiet,” Steve speaks up, and Nancy shifts awkwardly where she sits beside Robin.
Eddie takes a deep breath. He doesn’t know if he truly wants the information he’s about to receive. But not knowing doesn’t help him, either.
“Why didn’t you guys tell me Sunny started dating Jonathan?”
The room goes silent, varying expressions on his friends’ faces. Nancy’s eyebrows raise as she lets his words roll through her head, Robin turning to give her a confused look. Steve’s mouth opens and closes and opens once more.
“I’m sorry… what?” he asks, amusement tugging on the corner of his mouth. Nancy giggles a little, and Robin nudges her with her elbow.
“Sunny… and Jonathan. I literally just saw them at a coffee shop and he kissed her on the head so please don’t try to make me feel crazy—”
“Woah, Eddie, slow your roll there,” Robin butts in, holding up her hands. “Sunny and Jonathan aren’t dating. Or, if they are, it’s news to us, too.”
He blinks. The skin between his brows crinkles as he stands there, dumb and silent.
“But… then why did he, when did… why did he kiss her?”
“They’ve gotten really close, but just… platonically. It’s not anything else,” Nancy says, trying to reassure him with a soft smile.
When he doesn’t seem convinced, she keeps going. “Eddie. We wouldn’t lie to you. I mean, you’re back in Hawkins. What good would lying do? If they were together you’d be bound to find out eventually.”
He thinks about this, and then decides to pull his head out of his ass. He’s seeing his best friends for the first time in a year and instead of being thrilled he’s being difficult.
“No, you’re right, Wheeler. As always,” he smirks a little. “I really fucking missed you guys,” he adds, a lump forming in his throat as he smiles at them.
“We missed you so much, Eddie,” Nancy says, the other two echoing the sentiment.
“Not to ruin the moment…” Robin cuts in after a pause. “But, uh… how are you going to tell Sunny that you’re back?” she asks, hesitance clear in her tone.
“I, uh, I’m gonna be honest. I don’t really have a plan. I don’t know how much she even wants to see me.”
Three heads nod at the same time, sharing glances as they consider the subject at hand. “She really misses you, Eddie,” Nancy says, her eyes getting softer, sympathetic. “We aren’t the only ones who did.”
“She does?”
“Yeah… did you not know?”
“Okay, to be completely fucking fair right now, I love you guys but I haven’t been able to speak to her once since I’ve been gone,” he says, trying to defend himself even a little bit. “I haven’t heard one thing from her… I— I really didn’t know what to think.”
“It’s been hard,” Steve says, and the look in his eyes shows Eddie how true that statement is. “She’s been… kind of a wreck without you.”
This statement loads in his brain, his heart plummeting to the pit of his stomach.
“It’s been worse lately, I think with the holiday coming up it’s just reminding her of last year. She’s been like, a completely different person. We never wanted to tell you over the phone and worry you…” Robin adds, her bright eyes flitting nervously around the room.
Eddie nods, lips pressing in a flat line. “So, what do we do? How do we do this? I want to make this Christmas so, so much better for her than the last one.”
There’s a pause, before Nancy speaks. “I have an idea,” she says, nodding decisively. “We have to keep it a surprise.”
This year, Eddie isn’t going to fuck things up. This year, he’s going to get his girl.
Present Day: December 22nd, 1989.
The Wheeler home is immaculately decorated for Christmas. Faux-candles flicker in each of the windows, delicate white lights lining the roof. You watch as the perfect wreath on the front door slides out of view, replaced by the face of Mrs. Wheeler as she greets you.
“Please, come on in,” she welcomes you, offering to take your coat and your scarf. “The girls are in the kitchen already.”
You thank her, letting her leave to hang up your garments, slipping off your boots before you head straight back to your friends.
“Sunny!” Robin says cheerfully. Her hair is pulled back into a tiny ponytail, her hands already busy gathering ingredients for the cookie dough.
“Hi, guys,” you smile. “Sorry I’m a little late.”
“It’s no problem at all. Rob and I were just starting to get everything ready,” Nancy assures you, coming over to give you a quick hug.
You welcome it gladly, inhaling her sweet perfume as you lean in close. You were happy to be here, hoping that maybe it would help you feel a little bit lighter; give you some of that holiday cheer you’d been searching for. You were less optimistic on the front of it helping you not think about Eddie, but you could still hope. After your conversation with Jonathan the day before, you were trying to be a little more hopeful about everything. Key word trying.
“So, what kind of cookies are we making?” you ask, moving to wash your hands in the sink.
“We’re thinking classic sugar — obviously — peanut butter, and maybe those ones with the raspberry jam?” Robin says absentmindedly, eyeing a recipe as she pours cups of flour into a bowl.
“Raspberry? The only people who ever eat those are Steve and… Eddie,” you say, slowly turning off the tap.
“Oh, uh, yeah well. You know how much Steve likes them, we should be nice to him this year,” Robin rushes out, a nervous lilt hinting in her voice.
“Okay…” you say, catching the piercing look Nancy gives her girlfriend.
Unbeknownst to you, the girls, Steve, and Eddie had come up with a plan for Eddie’s grand entrance at the party on Christmas Eve. They weren’t going to tell you — or anyone else — that he was back home, wanting it to be a surprise. Mostly, they just didn’t trust anyone else not to spill the beans to you.
Robin and Nancy had previously talked about making the third kind of cookie for Steve and Eddie, but, well… Robin wasn’t supposed to tell you that. They were going to make them without you, so as not to make you suspicious. But, sometimes Robin’s brain works on autopilot. She looks as though she wants to grab the words out of thin air and stuff them back down her throat.
Thankfully for them, you don’t overthink it. You don’t really have a reason to. Choosing to move right along, you ask them what they need your help with so you’re not standing there aimlessly all afternoon. Nancy hands you a rolling pin to roll the dough out once Robin’s finished mixing it, and you get right down to it.
The three of you make quick work of the whole process, you rolling out the dough and Nancy cutting shapes into it as Robin mixes up the icing. The longer you’re there, though, the more the energy starts to feel… off.
They keep looking at you weirdly, for starters. Staring at you a little too long, looking like they want to tell you something but they never do. It’s nothing you can’t brush off, but it just feels different in a way you can’t explain.
You’re all singing along to Christmas music, laughing and dancing around the kitchen when the phone rings.
Nancy pulls the phone off of the wall, cradling it between her shoulder and her ear as she attempts to continue icing a few cookies. “Hello?” she asks into the receiver.
Her eyes go wide, then, her casual demeanor slipping away as she fumbles to hold the phone fully with one hand, backing closer to the wall.
“Uh, hi. I’m with Robin and Sunny right now. This isn’t really a good time,” she says, stressing the last part a little too hard and making you look over in her direction.
“Who is it?” you ask.
“It’s, um, it’s just Steve.”
“Oh! Can I talk to him for a second? I have something I’ve been meaning to ask him,” you say, walking over to her.
She hesitates for a moment before slamming the phone back on the hook without a word, pressing her lips into a thin line. “He had to… go. Sorry,” she says, furrowing her brows. Robin looks up at her with an arched brow, and you’re simply stood there with your mouth slightly open, utterly confused.
Nancy forces a tight-lipped smile on her face, feigning coolness, as she walks back to the counter to continue decorating the cookies.
“Okay. What is going on?” you break the silence. They’re acting strange. Like, really fucking strange.
“What?” they both ask in unison, only heightening your suspicions.
“You guys are acting so weird. And why did you just hang up on Steve like that?”
“I…. it… it wasn’t Steve. It was Eddie that called,” Nancy admits, and you don’t miss the way Robin shoots her daggers. “I’m sorry, Sunny. I just didn’t want you to start thinking about him. I want this day to be fun for you!” she covers, skirting around the fact that Eddie is very much in Hawkins and was calling about something regarding the party.
“Oh…” you say, thinking this over. “It’s okay, Nance. I can handle the truth,” you continue, not angrily.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have lied, it was silly of me,” she admits, shaking her head a little. You can sense Robin’s posture relaxing beside you. She’s still being a little weird….
You don’t want to press the issue, simply telling Nancy it’s fine and continuing on with your work. It does make you think about Eddie, but then again, when aren’t you thinking about him? Nothing has truly relieved you of the weight of his loss, and it’s certainly not Nancy’s fault that he called at a bad time.
The cookies are completed within the next few hours, the girls behaving much more calmly than they were before and during the phone call. You’re tired by the time all of the sugary treats have been put aside in tins, and you’re more than ready to go home and sink into your warm bed. Tugging your coat back on, you prepare yourself to face the cold.
“Thank you guys so much for inviting me over, I had a lot of fun today,” you smile, making them return the expression. “Honestly, it’s the first day in a while where I’ve felt kind of… normal.”
Nancy squeezes you in a hug, rubbing your back with gentle hands. “I’m so glad to hear it. We’ll see you at the Christmas party, then?” she asks as she pulls away.
“Yeah, I’ll see you guys then. Steve better eat all of those damn raspberry cookies, since we made a huge batch just for him,” you joke, and Robin laughs a little too hard before Nancy elbows her in the side.
You pause in the middle of tugging on your second boot, glancing at them with piqued interest. You guess they’re both just weird today.
Present Day: Christmas Eve, 1989.
Fluffy white flakes fall down around you, landing on the fuzzy surface of your black coat as you step out of your car. Popping open your trunk, you start gathering the presents you’d brought for everyone. Steve’s front door opens, light from the inside of his home illuminating the darkening driveway as he steps out, jogging down to you.
“Hey, let me give you a hand,” he offers, squeezing your shoulder.
“Okay, thanks,” you smile, your cheeks and nose already chilled from the cold weather.
“You excited? You always love my Christmas Eve parties,” he waggles his eyebrows at you, making you laugh a little. Easing the ache in your chest.
“Of course I am,” you assure him, even if you don’t know if you really mean it.
Between the two of you, you’re able to carry all of the presents inside — a blur of red and green and gold, pretty bows and shiny wrapping paper, stumbling through the front door. Everyone has already arrived, except for Robin and Nancy. You’re sure they’re scrambling to get all of the cookies in the car along with their gifts.
Max helps you lay the presents around Steve’s tree, a tall and sparkly thing that makes the living room feel more warm. You can feel yourself defrosting, the ice caging in your heart melting slowly as you try to soak in the Christmas spirit. After another minute the girls burst through the door, Nancy carrying two tins of cookies with gift bags hanging from her arms. Robin follows closely behind, carrying the third tin of baked goods and as many presents as she could stack on top of each other.
Steve’s hurrying over to them in an instant, scolding Robin for not asking for his help. He eases their load, bringing the cookies into the kitchen where you offer to plate some of them. Jonathan’s mixing up a spiked eggnog, passing you a shot glass half-full to give it a taste test. The hustle and bustle feels good today, or at least as good as it can.
Everyone’s starting to settle in, chatting amongst one another with a type of giddiness that only comes this time of year. You see the snow still falling outside from the large windows, thankful to be warm by the fire.
You’re about to pour yourself a drink when there’s a knock on the door, stopping everyone in the middle of their conversations.
“Sunny, can you get that?” Steve asks you nonchalantly, laying out a spread of mini-sandwiches on the kitchen island.
“Who else are we expecting?” you ask, looking around you at your friends.
“Can you just grab it, please?” Steve tries again, making himself look as distracted as possible.
“Okay, okay, I’m going! Jesus,” you mutter the last part to yourself, crossing your cardigan over your chest as you hurry towards the door.
Who it could possibly be, you have no idea. The usual group was here. Maybe a parent, dropping by to say hello? You pull the door open, a rush of frigid air whooshing past you. You aren’t sure who you were expecting to see, but you know who you weren’t. The person on the other side of it stops you dead in your tracks, your heart honest to god stopping for a moment. You stand there, staring at each other in heavy silence for what feels like a century before you finally speak.
“Eddie?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
----------------------------------------
YOU ARE COMPLETELY HELPLESS.
And boy, oh boy, do you know it.
because only you could watch a boy walk into such a romantically decorated room, hand in hand with another girl, and still have your heart beat to the rhythm of every step he takes. only you could watch him tuck a stray hair behind her ear and still have your heart hammer against your chest at the idea of him doing that to you. and only you could watch as his emerald eyes scan the room subtly and delusionally think that he's looking for you.
there was probably a gaping hole on the side of your head, with the way your once boisterous friends stood quietly to your left, looking at you to gauge any negative reaction.
you weakly shoot a smile their way before gazing at the spectacle in front of you once more.
it doesn't take much for midoriya and camie to capture the attention of the whole room - izuku midoriya is gorgeous in his own right, he always has been - but tonight he is resplendent. black tuxes have always been known to make a man more attractive. sure, that was true. but as midoriya moves further into the room it became strikingly obvious not only to you, but to everyone else in the room, that the black tuxedo might've been made for him and him alone.
you slam your eyes shut tightly, knowing that if you stare at him any longer a pool of drool will drown you and everyone else in this auditorium. and your insurance definitely doesn't cover that.
you focus your attention on your friends and their dates standing next to you, turning your back to your crush and his date, ignoring the sinking feeling pooling in the pit of your stomach.
"now i feel insecure. babe, we should leave early and change into our jammies." kirishima mumbled, pulling at the points of his hair, and avoiding eye-contact.
"babe, you look great, stop it." she assures him, stopping his nervous tick it's tracks, and soothingly rubbing his back.
"i will admit he's better looking than anyone gives him credit for - dare i say, he's underrated." kaminari pipes up, earning a nod in agreeance from his girlfriend.
"babbeeee, you weren't supposed to agree." kaminari whines, earning and eyeroll from jirou.
"you feeling okay, y/n?" your best friend asks, causing your laughter at your electric friend to die in your throat, a look of concern pressed against his features. sero's date, a nice guy from general studies you'd met previously, shares the same look. clearly, sero has clued him in.
"mhm. i'm doing swell." you hum, as an itch crawls up the side of your arms.
was the room always this loud?
"are you even listening to me?"
no.
no you weren't.
that was a hard thing to do when the mumblings and giggles of the nearby groups of girls were reverberating in your ears at unsafe decibels.
it's not easy to ignore the sound of his laugh or see his perfect smile and look away, but you do it. you do it because you have to.
but for whatever reason it's damn near impossible to tune out the strangers who would've never given him the time of day otherwise talking about him.
"damn, i should've dm-ed him when i had the chance. he's hot."
"is the girl he came with his girlfriend? fuck, does she even know how lucky she is?"
"the things i would do to see that tux on the floor of my r-"
tune it out. tune it out. tune it out.
the longer you listen, the more enraged you'll become, and you have absolutely no right to be enraged. you're not his girlfriend. you're not anyone. you're not camie. you're not camie.
a calloused hand places itself on your shoulder, snapping you out of your thoughts. your date stands next to you, a blank expression on his features, as he stares past you and over at the dazzling couple behind you.
you glance over your shoulder, watching as camie places a shy hand on midoriya's bicep, leaning into him as they greet his friends. she looks absolutely stunning, a little uncomfortable, but beautiful all the same. then again, you can't name a time she didn't.
why couldn't you have driven a less attractive woman into the arms of the man you love? it would have at least made you feel a little better about yourself.
"you need a drink," katsuki mumbles beside you, slicing your intense thoughts in half. he'd always been good at that, snapping you back into reality. you'd almost forgotten he was there because of how quiet he's been since you arrived. despite claiming that you would immediately part ways upon arrival, he hadn't left your side once since the night began.
you turned your attention to the typically-aggravated blonde standing closely beside you, as the light hand on your shoulder begins to steer you away from your anxieties in human form and to something less daunting: the snack bar.
"have you ever liked someone so much that you didn't care if they liked you back? you just cared if they were happy?" you asked a few minutes later, after tucking into one of the mini cupcakes they had on display.
"no, but it seems to be a common thing that you idiots feel," he responds honestly, handing you a cup of fruit punch.
"is this spiked?"
"drink it."
you do. it's fucking horrible.
"do you think it's a bad thing to feel?" you ask.
"i think it's neither here or nor there, it seems to be something you people with overly big hearts feel," your date responds, "i cannot imagine telling the person i like to be with someone else just because i want them to be happy. be happy with me or be single - that's how i feel about the whole thing."
"that's awful, kats."
"no, that's fighting for what you want. something you haven't even tried to do. you heard there was competition and gave up before you even tried. you don't even really know how deku feels." he retorted.
"of course, i do! i mean look at who he came with." you shift your head slightly in the direction you knew camie and midoriya were standing, still unable to look at them.
bakugou shakes his head, convinced that you have got to be the most daft person in this auditorium right now, "you are helpless."
you laugh at that.
"listen, you could stand here sulking all night, and fuck, i'd let you, i don't give that much of a shit," he continues, "but this stupid dance has been at the forefront of everyone's mind, and it would be great if i didn't have to hear you bitching and moaning about how you didn't have a good time tomorrow morning."
a mischievous, yet genuine smile creeps up your face as you extend your hand out to the blonde in front of you, "that was a roundabout way of asking me to dance, katsu."
"shut up."
-
IZUKU MIDORIYA IS THE DUMBEST MAN ALIVE. yes, that may sound like a bold claim coming from a place of regret and self-pity, and lord knows that may be true - but what if i told you it was the full unadulterated truth? that he truly was the most incompetent person in the room he was in?
would you believe me?
honestly, it wouldn't matter if you didn't.
because he believes it.
he believes it for me, you, and everyone else within a thousand-mile radius. he believes it from the top of his head all the way down to the tips of his toes. he believes it so much you can visibly see him shaking with anger at his position at the snack bar.
he doesn't even really remember how he got here. from the moment he stepped out of the 4-kilometer limo, his entire night so far has been blurring together.
he remembers helping camie out of the limo, he remembers entering the auditorium, and he remembers the whispers. but he does not remember seeing you.
for a moment he believes that you've decided to stay home. for a moment he is convinced he can leave this dance early and go and talk to you at your dorm a day early.
but that's not the case.
god, he wishes that were the case because now he has to stand here, against the back wall of the dancefloor, and watch you dazzle the room as you switch between dance partners captivating every person who your hands meet.
izuku midoriya is the dumbest man in the world today because he hurt you yesterday, and there is nothing he can do about it until tomorrow.
so he has to fill his night with playing the wallflower role, watching you from a safe distance. not that he could get any closer if he wanted to. sero's been watching him since the night began and there was almost no way in hell that midoriya was getting to you without going through him first.
he watched wordlessly as bakugou, his nemesis, best friend, and the other things in between, entered the rotation. he twirled you up in the air, the most angelic giggles escaping from your lips, cries of laughter between pleas of mercy.
izuku wonders about the last time that smile was directed at him. he also wonders how discreetly he can activate one-for-all before bakugou notices and attacks him first.
it's been a long time since midoriya felt an ounce of jealousy toward his childhood friend. i mean, you live 14 years in a man's shadow and you think that's the most resentment you can feel towards him.
how shocking it must be to realize that years of childhood trauma don't even hold a candle to what he's feeling right now?
midoriya threw his head back downing the last of his overly sweet, potentially-spiked punch.
"drowning yourself in gross drinks doesn't help by the way," an unexpected voice called from beside him. izuku glanced over only to be met with the side profile of his good friend, ochaco.
she leaned against the wall cooly, bopping her head to the pop music playing, "have you spoken to her yet?"
"i haven't. sero's been playing guard dog all night," the freckled teen commented, reaching to pour himself another drink before his hand was swatted away by his friend.
"you gonna confess?"
"i mean in a normal circumstance you would. but i don't even have real confirmation that she likes me. i only have context clues, and todoroki's cryptic ass texts."
"you need more than that?"
"hearing her say it would be nice because the googly eyes she's making at kacchan right now aren't helping my confidence much." midoriya laughed drily, resting his face in his palms, "it also doesn't help that she thinks I have feelings for someone else."
"you've both really made a mess of things." she comments bluntly.
"thank you, that's helpful."
it's silent for a few moments after that, causing midoriya to turn his head and look at his friend. she appears contemplative with her furrowed eyebrows and the chewing of her bottom lip.
"you want help, deku? fine, i'll give you help. you're gonna have a window of 17 seconds to get to her without anyone intervening." she states, out of practically nowhere.
"i beg your pardon?"
"i'm going to distract sero and his date, it's going to take roughly 17 seconds before he realizes what's going on and turns around to get to y/n, by then, i expect you to already be there confessing your undying love or whatever," she explains as she stands up.
"i can't-"
"can't or won't?" she shuts him down immediately, already walking away before midoriya was able to get a word in at all.
instantaneously, uraraka is at work, she is delighting sero and his boyfriend, and they're laughing as midoriya is cutting through the crowd as inconspicuously as possible.
he finally reaches bakugou, who is no longer dancing with you and instead recording videos for kirishima and mina.
"where is y/n?" midoriya hurriedly asks.
"what took you so fucking long, idiot?" the irritated blonde inquired.
"doctor's orders: stay away from y/n."
"and you actually listened to that crap? psh, now i really know you're an idiot," bakugou rolls his eyes, "she's dancing with that metal fucker from 2b."
it doesn't take much effort to find tetsutetsu. the strobe lights on the dancefloor reflects off him making him an equal parts blinding disco ball and a beautiful one.
"tetsu, do you mind if i cut in?"
-
his voice immediately sends shivers up your spine, causing each individual hair on your body to stand on end.
please tetsu. please tetsu. please tetsu.
the downside to tetsu being metal is that he cannot feel the change in pressure applied to his body. because there's no way in hell he would've felt the vice grip you had on his shoulders and still assuredly and happily say, "go for it, bro! don't let me stop you!" and immediately step back into the crowd. that would've never happened.
unfortunately it did.
"don't run away. i need to talk to you." he exhaled, reading your thoughts in an instant, and practically cementing your feet in place.
you rolled you eyes sublty, crossing your arms over you chest hoping that this action will protect your heart from the incoming stabbing pain it will face.
i mean isn't it obvious why he wants to talk to you?
he saw you here with bakugou at some point during the night and he probably asked todoroki what was going on, and the jig was finally up. odd are he told him everything. and it's most likely he's flattered but uninterested.
this was izuku midoriya trying to let you down gently and god, did you feel pretty fucking pathetic.
you inhaled deepy as midoriya took your hand in his and pulled you close to him, making it impossible for him to not feel the rapid way in which your heart was beating. your face heated at the thought of him knowing just how nervous he made you.
you'd love to bathe in the warmth of his body and breathe in his pine scent, but you couldn't help but wonder where camie was. imagine how she'd feel if she saw you pressed up against her date like this.
before you could make a move to put distance between you and midoriya, he began speaking.
"are you thinking about, camie?" midoriya asked quietly, clearly able to read the expression on your face.
"yeah." you replied timidly.
"she's gone." he responded, emphasizing that last word.
you slowly raised your head, to meet his eyes for the first time since he arrived in the auditorium, "what?"
"she went to go see her boyfriend."
"i don't understand," you respond, a fog you didn't even realize was there to start with began to clear.
"i've been trying to tell you that camie and i were never together."
"but her twitter-"
"she was trying to make her ex-boyfriend jealous, which obviously it worked because she left within the first 20 minutes of us being here to be with him, which you would've noticed if you weren't avoiding me," he explained, taking your hand in his, "camie and i were never together. she and i were just using each other as a distraction from our problems. we are friends. nothing more nothing less,"
you stared at him in disbelief, the fog quickly turning into a red haze of anger, "why wouldn't you just tell me that from the beginning? and why did you even need to use camie? i mean, we'd gotten pretty close by that point, i don't understand why you couldn't confide in me, izuku," you say half to him, and half to yourself, ripping your hand out of his grasp in the process.
he loved hearing you say his first name, but not like this. not when you're angry with him.
"it is complicated," he frowned, defeat playing on his soft features.
"bullshit. you didn't trust me enough to talk to me about your problems. midoriya, i told you everything." you whisper-shouted, your heart jumping into your throat.
you'd quickly become very conscious of the fact that you were having this heated discussion in the middle of the dance floor surrounded by your peers. and it sure as hell didn't help that uraraka, sero, and, bakugou were all staring at you two from a distant spot on the wall of the dancefloor.
exasperated and mildly embarrassed, you unhook yourself from midoriya's steady grasp on your waist and storm your way out onto the balcony. he followed closely behind.
you thought the cold air would give you some clarity or maybe some kind of idea on how to navigate this conversation, but all it really did was anger you further, "why don't you trust me?" you choked out, tears brimming in your eyes.
"i- i do." midoriya pleaded.
"you don't!" you spat, turning your back to him and looking out to the musutafu skyline, finally allowing the tears to kiss your cheeks.
"you don't," you whispered, hanging your head, "you opted to rent a girlfriend and confuse the masses rather than just talk to me about your problems."
"how do you expect me to talk about my problems to the problem, y/n?" he finally snapped, turning you whole body to face him with one swift movement.
you pause, mulling over the weight of his words for a second.
"you're the problem, y/n." he starts, running an exasperated fist through his hair, "you've been the problem since the first time you messaged me. honestly, you've been the problem since we met!" he's pacing now, "seriously what did you want me to do? come to you and tell you how you're all i can think about and that all i wanna do is punch my best friend in the face because the girl i am hopelessly in love with loves him instead?"
he's in love with you?
izuku midoriya is in love with you?
your body is like a magnet, it moves all on it's own.
"you know, i had this whole speech i was gonna give you about how i was sorry for letting you think that even for an instant, there was another girl in my life that meant as much to me as you did-"
"oh, were you?" you cut in, stepping closer to him.
"-and i was going to tell you how sorry i am that i made you sad and that if you allowed me to do right by you, i would do everything in my power to make sure that you never felt sad again." he declares, breathless by the time he's finished his monologue.
"you have feelings for me?" you ask, inching closer to him.
"it's relatively impossible not to, y/n, have you met yourself?" he responds with a sigh, bringing his hand up to rub his forehead.
"poor taste." you quip, getting a rare eye roll from the boy in front of you.
"so, you started talking to camie to distract yourself from your feelings for me because you wanted me to be happy?" you question slowly, wanting to catch every change in reaction his face makes. you get a little closer.
"and you dropped todoroki without telling me because you thought i was into camie, and you wanted me to be happy?" he retorted. he's moving a little too.
a small laugh can't help but play in your throat before you deeply exhale, and bring your palm up to cup his freckled cheek. as if it were the most natural thing, he begins nuzzling into the warmth of your hand.
"i hate when he's right," you hum, thinking of your best friend and the first words he ever said to you when you mentioned involving midoriya in this whole mess, "he's never gonna let me live this down." you murmur, caressing the freckles under your thumb.
"when who is ri-" midoriya tries to inquire, but the words die in his throat, as you move towards him suddenly, lifting your head, and pressing your lips against his. after a few moments, you make a move to pull away, but the hand that wraps around your neck, and the other that holds your cheek holds you stationary, and simultaneously causes the kiss to deepen significantly. it does take much longer to confirm your suspicion that there is probably nothing else in the world you enjoy more than kissing izuku midoriya.
"wait, wait, wait," the greenette pulls away, earning a whiny groan from you, "as much i love that, i need to know what this means. i need to hear you say it."
"it means that i am hopelessly in love with you too. and that i'm sorry for putting you through that emotional rollercoaster. it means i am yours for as long as you'll have me." you sigh, resting your head on his shoulder.
"hm." midoriya hummed in satisfaction, placing a chaste kiss on your forehead, "can we agree on something?"
"sure."
"when it comes to one another, let's vow to be eternally selfish."
"pft, vowing to have you all to myself forever?" you laugh, "consider it done."
FUN FACT: i am a sucker for a happy ending.
Little Shadow (ft. Legend and Warriors)
“Hey, when you're done with that, can you help me clean up Mr. Raven’s classroom?”
“Yes, just give me a sec.” Warriors called back to Time, filling up his water bottle a little higher before going to screw on the lid. He and Time had stayed late today and were helping clean classrooms, as tomorrow was the start of Spring Break. Wind had a doctor's appointment, and Grandma couldn't pick them up till later, so they might as well be useful.
He was distracted and didn't notice the small form of Legend behind him till the second grader pulled on his blazer, startling Wars into nearly dropping his water bottle.
“What're you doing?” The 2nd grader asked as Warriors recovered from his scare.
“How are you so quiet?” Warriors asked back, a slight frown on his face as he looked down at the bit of water he had spilled. Legend shrugged.
“Dunno.” He said, playing with his ID tag. Warriors waited to be told to mind his own business, but it never came.
“Um, ok.” He said after a moment of awkward silence. He nodded to the younger boy and turned, heading down the hall to Mr. Raven’s classroom, the 2A class, and Legend followed behind him.
Time wasn't in the classroom when they got there, so Warriors grabbed a rag and spray bottle and started wiping down desks. Legend sat in the teachers chair and watched for a bit, playing with his hoodie strings.
It was unusual for the 2nd grader to be around Warriors this long without saying something to try and start a fight, or at least a conversation, but Wars wasn't sure how to start a conversation himself, so the two went on in uncomfortable quiet.
“...that's my desk.” Legend eventually spoke up as Warriors moved to the next desk. Upon further inspection, the elder boy noticed little rabbits drawn on the wood of the desk in pencil lead.
“Huh. These are pretty good.” Warriors said, raising his eyebrows and looking mildly impressed. He hesitated at wiping them away, then got an idea. “Hold on, let me show you something.”
Legend sat up, curious as Warriors rooted through the teachers desk for some wide, clear packing tape. He knew Mr. Raven would have some because he had moved classrooms recently and had put stuff in storage. After getting the tape and a few thick pieces of pink construction paper, he knew that was Legend's favorite color, he painstakingly used the tape to transfer the images off the desk and onto the paper for Legend to keep.
“Woah.” Legend said softly, looking at the pages in awe. Warriors smiled, handing them to the boy, then wiping down the desk. Legend hovered by his side until an after-school program volunteer tracked him down, and told him his uncle was there to pick him up.
Legend and Warriors waved goodbye to each other, and Wars continued cleaning the classroom in silence.
The younger boy was back to pestering Warriors the next day. He put leaves in his lunchbox, left silly notes by his locker, and started an argument over whether black was a color or not.
But, at the end of the day, Wars found a little pink origami bunny on his desk, and he realized he might not mind Legend's antics as much as he thought.
Ted Lasso fics masterlist
it’s not about the wins or losses, it’s about the fandom we made along the way - and that, I think, is what I’ll miss the most
meanwhile, a masterlist of all my Ted/Trent fics:
1. The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret (T, 20k)
“Thing is, though, you gotta love the questions themselves. I guess you journalists don’t get the luxury of that, seeing’s how you gotta rush your stories out - y’all just want your answers right off the bat. But I think you gotta live the questions first. Then one day you’ll gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
Trent takes off his glasses. “Ted Lasso, did you just quote Rilke at me?”
Ted shrugs modestly.
“I take it back,” says Trent. “You don’t need media training at all.”
In 48 hours, Trent Crimm lands a scoop, implodes his career and makes some drastic life decisions. And then there's the aftermath. And Ted, of course.
2. they will see us waving from such great heists (T, 21k)
“Well, like the Gambler himself says - you got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em. Know when to walk away, know when to run. And the latter would be about now, because I think this house is on fire.”
In which Trent Crimm, Interpol, investigates the theft of Rupert Mannion’s painting by a mysterious thief dubbed The Greyhound. FBI Special Agent Ted Lasso gets in the way. Heist!AU
2a. Trick Plays (T, 6.4k)
Snippets from the Such Great Heists universe, including Crimminal Intent, The Prying Dutchman and We Provide Leverage.
3. constant as a northern star (constantly in the dark) (T, 10.5k)
“I just met Ted Lasso,” Sachiko Crimm says bluntly when her ex-husband picks up.
Trent is silent for a while. “And?” he says finally.
Sachiko gives it five seconds, and then she bursts out laughing.
“Stop it,” says Trent wearily.
The saga of Trent Crimm and his independent ex-wife
4. all the men and women merely players (T, 50k)
"So let me get this straight. You, an American whose career highlights consisted mainly of appearing on Saturday Night Live, decide in the wake of the apocalypse to lead a touring Shakespeare company across the ruins of England."
"Oh, I know. Heck, I said as much to Rebecca when she suggested it. I said, 'You could fill two Internets with what I don’t know about directing Shakespeare.' And she said, 'Ted, the Internet doesn’t exist any more.'"
Trent Crimm meets Ted Lasso by chance at a Shakespeare play. Five years and the end of the world later, they meet again at another. A Station Eleven post-apocalyptic theatre AU (no knowledge of Station Eleven necessary to read), WIP but updating real soon!
It’s been an honour to write for this fandom, I love you all so very much (on three!)
Still Alive for My Lover
Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader
Summary: The four times Spencer brushes with death and the fifth time he's reborn to find his way back to you
Warning: angst with happy ending || [Part 2A of Death of a Love Affair; Part 2B is the sad ending]
A/n: I did a poll the other day on if I should post both different part 2s for Death of a Love Affair and posting both won so here is one of the endings--the happy one! I actually scrapped my first happy ending idea for this (I dreamt about this plot just the other night) so like a maniac, I wrote and edited it in one sitting. Also he has been through a lot so I had to choose scenes that I think would affect his psyche. Hope you enjoy!
Part one || Main masterlist || Part 2B
The first time Death came close was during an Anthrax attack
In Spencer’s quest in solving the time sensitive and nation threatening case, he made a series of misjudgments that had led him to being exposed to the chemically engineered Anthrax.
During his months of adjusting back into being single and alone, he poured all that he could to his job. No longer were the cases viewed with a clear objective mind, they all became personal. Case distance from Virginia, where you were, meant nothing. He viewed each killer a threat to your existence. In the most convoluted way, this was him protecting and keeping you safe when he no longer could beside you.
“Hey, Reid.” Garcia softly said.
“Reid, wow, no, uh—no witty Garcia greeting for me?” Spencer joked to try and lighten the mood.
She shakily exhaled her breath. “I can’t be my sparkly self when you are where you are.”
“Garcia, do you think you can do something for me?” His voice trailing off at the end.
“Anything.”
“I, uh-I know I can’t call my mom without uh—“ he cleared his throat. “Without alerting everyone at her hospital and I can’t call Y/N since—since it’s protocol and we broke up.”
She paused, nodding her head. “What do you need?”
“I-I need you to record messages for them, in case anything happens to me.”
“Oh, nothing’s going to happen to you,” she tried to be optimistic. “You’re gonna—brilliantly find out who did this and we’re gonna treat this strain.”
He sighed with a slight smile on his face. “I hope you’re right, but if you’re not, I just—I really want to make sure that they hear my voice.”
“Ok, just give me a second.” The taps from her keyboard echoing in the background.
“Are you ready?” Spencer asked.
“Ready.”
“Hi, Mom. This is Spence. I just, um-I just really want you to know that I love you and—i need you to know that I spend every day of my life proud to be your son.” His tone fluctuating from holding back tears. “Y/N, I know we broke up months ago but—I need you to know that I love you and that I’m sorry—” A shiver passed through his body, a sign of his fever escalating. “Sorry for pushing you down in my list of priorities—should have done better. I don’t resent you for leaving me and if—if this is my last message, I want you to know you’re one of the last things on my mind, Angel.”
The thought of you finding out through the news that an FBI agent had died or worse, not finding out at all, sent him into a tailspin. You were a worrier and Spencer didn’t want you to question your judgement of breaking it off with him and drown in the not knowing, what ifs of it all. He wondered where you were at that very moment as he crept closer and closer to Death’s door. Were you wallowing still? Maybe out for brunch with your friends or a date—his breathing stuttered at the thought. He tried and failed to imagine you smiling at a faceless man in front of you, preening under your attention. Who wouldn’t? He shook his head as an effect to bring him back to the present.
The pause made Garcia panic. “Reid?”
“I-I gotta go.”
Click.
The second time was when Maeve died
Spencer thought he was finally going to get it right with Maeve but it was false hope, his speculation far from the truth because Maeve—his second chance in love was dead, killed right before his very eyes. He loved her, truly did even without knowing what she looked like—not in the encompassing way he loved you, no, but Maeve still carved a space in his heart that was one filled by you. She was comfort and a healing balm for the pain of losing you.
He associated navigating life with you as something like entering a luscious forest. With you leading the way though the beautiful greenery and kind animals—a fairytale kind of love. But when you let go of his hand, the forest turned dark and the animals turned into monsters that haunt his every move. Maeve was a cabin in those woods, lighted and warm with a fireplace—a respite for his lost and terrified being. He knew what was out there but housed in her presence, he felt safe and believed himself ready to defend his newfound solace. He was wrong, the security was temporary. His shelter torn down and taken away, leaving him back out in the woods with no light or guiding star to see him through.
Curling into himself on the floor beside his bed with ‘The Narrative of John Smith’, the copy that Maeve gifted, tucked to his chest, uncaring of the the pathogens that it can carry, a folded piece of paper under the dresser caught his eye. He stretched his hand, feeling the settled dust on its surface scatter, and pulled it into the light. Gingerly, he opened the yellowing sheet and found himself staring at your handwriting—a note that he had never seen before.
He once asked about your penchant for leaving hand written notes for him to find. You shrugged then and nonchalantly called it a treasure hunt for him to partake in. During the times passed, he’d encounter lingering, forgotten notes from you all over his apartment. In his cupboard, pushed in the dark recesses, in his rarely worn patterned coat, and slotted in between the books on his bookshelf. He thought he had found them all but here was one left unread as if it knew when to make its presence known. As if it knew that he needed a sliver of light to guide him home.
Spence,
I’m not sure if we met at the right time, but because we’re both here, let’s do our best and if there does come a time were we must part, know that I love you. I’ll love you enough until we meet again.
His tears broke free from his battered walls and streamed down his face. He loved Maeve. He was thankful for the peace each phone call had given him and although his memory of each talk may fade into the back of his mind, the relief and emotion she had given him will linger in his chest. He slowly got up from his position and approached his beloved shelf. With one last look at his book, he slotted it within the nook and walked away.
His love for Maeve will always be there but he loved you too and he thinks he always will. And when sadness and grief comes to pull him back under in moments of weakness, he unfolds his talisman—the note—kept near his heart as a reminder. A reminder that he has loved, was loved, and is still loved.
***
The third time was when he was shot in the neck
Fading in and out.
In—liquid seeping into his shirt and tie.
You were the only thing he could think of. Not the case, not the team, only you.
Out—sirens blaring in a distant background.
In—Morgan’s voice calling his name.
For the first time in a long time, Spencer was terrified. He was so terrified that death had come to collect his borrowed life without having a chance to right his wrongs. Without any contact and without any way to say how much he has loved you still after all these years and months. He could probably recite how long it had been, if only he wasn’t loopy from the pain.
Out—muffled voices all around him.
In—a gentle sway in the ambulance as it rushed to the hospital.
He wanted to tell you how much he’d learned from recalling all his memories with you. How much you had taught him about love—a teaching he could never find in books. How love was selfless and tenacious—just like when you didn’t give up on him early on—when it needed to be. How love is fueled with respect—like how you respected his choices and demands of his career, and how love—true love, knew when it’s time to go.
Out—streak of bright lights passing him by.
In—professionals dressed in scrubs and white coats touching him.
Your face was the only image settling behind his closed eyelids. He tried to remember the crinkle around your eyes when you smile, the scrunch of your nose when you laugh, or the he arch of your brows when you teased him but all were hazy, as if he was staring into a deep depth of water that rippled nonstop. All he could conjure up was your face with tears sliding down to your chin from the hurt he caused. He was deathly afraid that his last memory of you were in pain.
Out—laying cold on the operating table.
All he could muster to repeat to himself as he faded under local anesthesia was your name. Like it was a mantra, a prayer, and his own personal saving grace.
In—surrounded by beeping noises and fluffed pillows.
Mind still hazy when he came to, he sent a thank you to the stars. Grateful that Death was unsuccessful and to have been given an opportunity to correct his mistakes. Wishing that somehow, somewhere your paths and his would cross again and he could tell the story of all his adventures and yours, and how he has changed, hoping once again to be worthy of you.
***
The final time was during his stint in prison
He’s changed. In the dark forest you’ve left him behind, the once scared and hunted by monsters had become the hunter. The anger and agitation that simmered near the surface of his every waking moment was something he did not know how to accept. He was worried about the new him and how you’d perceive it. There were no signs of who he was before and during you. If he’d cross paths with you on the street, would you recognize him? He hoped so. Would you still accept him? He needed you to.
Along his long route back to you, he grew thorns and horns. He became decorated with wounds and scars. His talisman—your note—had aged, just like him, and had ripped along the folds. His once brilliant mind—now in a haze from trauma, memorized the words. It was your writing that grounded him while he was stuck in the cell of a mad woman’s making. The slants and loops studied and the grooves and indentations caressed with his calloused, bloody hands.
He loved you still, very much so, but with his change, it had also mutated. What once was compared to a fairytale kind of love had now been smudged with darkness and desperation.
He felt lethal in his journey back to your embrace. Gone was the boy who felt remorse in shooting an unsub between the brows and replaced with the man who felt no qualms in killing should safety be threatened. He knew he had to talk to someone about the path his thinking had taken but instead, he entered his home with a single-minded purpose, walking straight to your side of the drawer and clutched another memento that will buoy him through the ravaging waters of emotion—your engagement ring. Looping it through a chain that he now wears on his neck and near his heart, a symbolism of his will to see things through, come hell or high water, he’ll crawl home to you.
***
And his second life started when he left the BAU
Spencer wanted to see you. Once inside the building elevator going down, he fought the urge to dial your number—regardless if it was still even yours. He needed to know. To know if you’ve moved on after all those many years apart or lived just like he did—tried but unsuccessful, always comparing and always coming up short. The eyes not as kind as yours, the smile not as radiant, and the heart not as beautiful. Was it awful of him to wish for the former? Yes, yes it was. He knew you deserved happiness and support after all the times he had let you down, knew you deserved a life after him, knew you deserved a happy ending but here he was, hopelessly wishing that your happy ending was still with him.
He didn’t keep up with your life as much as he wanted to. The wounds of his failure and the battle scars he received along the way were still fresh. He didn’t have the right to know—a self imposed punishment. Although Garcia offered to look into you whenever he would reach rock bottom, and he’s been there a lot, he refused. By returning your ring, the engagement ring hidden underneath his shirt, you’ve taken back his privilege and he respected your decision.
You deserve better than to have him contact you without his life in order. If you’d still have him, you’d get the best of him. And so for the past six months, he focused on himself. He gained his footing in teaching young agents, he worked on his anger and made progress with his therapist, and he got to know who he was again beyond being an FBI agent. And it was as if the stars took notice of the changes and decided to reward him.
It was late into the night when he decided to make a quick grocery trip for some perishables missing in his pantry. This was out of his normal routine and he was forever grateful to the impulsiveness that took over him that night ever since. It was what led him to cross paths with the only person he had once considered home—you.
As he was entering the store, you had come out in all your beauty, struggling with one bag in each hand. Whenever he would recall this story, you’d scoff and tell him that you didn’t feel beautiful then—hair in a sloppy bun, t-shirt all crumpled, and face bare from any makeup. He’d object as no matter what the circumstance, you were always the most beautiful to him.
He cleared his throat then. “Y/N.”
“Spencer,” you breathed out, surprise painting across your face.
“Do you need help with that?” He asked, voice cracking at the end. He thought he outgrew his shyness, time in prison does that for a person, but here you were reverting him back to how he felt when he first met you. “I’d like to walk you back to your car, if that’s alright,” he added on as he was afraid of your refusal. The parking lot was dimly lit and almost deserted. Years of solving cases has made him hyper vigilante and even if he was technically no longer a fed, his experience stayed the same. He still wanted to make sure you were safe, after all the time away.
You hesitated before nodding once in agreement.
He smiled, letting go of his breath he didn’t know he was holding, and reached out to take your grocery purchases. “Let me get these for you, lead the way.”
The silence was uncomfortable. Years of being away from each other has made him a stranger to you and you to him.
You crossed yours arms, a sign of defense, before clearing your throat. “How’s the team?”
He pressed his lips into a straight line, not wanting to spill every little change that has happened while you were gone. “Good, good.”
Silence.
“No case tonight?”
“Uh—I only consult now,” he explained. “I went into teaching.”
Your arms dropped, a sign of openness, and you peered at him. “That’s—different. I mean, are you happy about that?”
He laughed and almost felt like preening at the care that you still had for him. “Yeah, it’s nice to have a normal schedule for once.”
“Somehow normal and you being mixed together doesn’t compute in my head,” you teased, swinging your hands in a clear sign of nervousness. He felt good—glad that he still could read your tics. How the slight downturn of your eyebrow meant you’d table the information to ruminate on it later. How the little bounce on your walk, that wasn’t there earlier, meant you were accepting of this situation. And how you slightly shifted closer to him meant you find his presence a protector.
As he was documenting each non-verbal cues into his memory, the back of your hand brushed with his, sending a jolt of electric charge. It was as if both your bodies needed a physical reminder that the other half is back and nearby. It was as if a defibrillator had charged his black and blue heart to life once again.
You giggled. “Sorry about that.”
It was a cold night but each laughter wrapped around him like a comforting blanket, warming his weary bones that had been lost in the dark cold woods for so long. “It’s alright,” he stated as he watched you unlock the trunk of your car.
Loading in your grocery in silence, he shuffled ever so slightly out of the way as you closed the trunk and rocked on your heels.
He stuffed his hands into his pockets. It was the only way he could prevent his hands from reaching out and caressing your pink cheeks. He didn’t have the permission to touch you yet—not matter how much he wanted to. So wanted to.
“You look—you look great, by the way,” you stammered out.
“Thanks, you too—look great, I mean,” he stated. He wanted to sing out more praises on how you’d gotten more beautiful, more radiant, and more lovely but he settled on something simple lest he scares you away with the intensity of his feelings. “Do you think could have your number? You know, just in case you’d need help with groceries again.” A feeble excuse.
You smiled. The type of smile that was once reserved for him and he wished for it to still be his. Please don’t say no, please, he realized that if you do, that will be it. That there will no longer be any saving the tragedy between him and you.
As he was starting to slide down the familiar slope of sadness, you nodded. “I never changed it.” You unlocked the driver seat before facing him once again. “Spence—”
He basked in hearing you say his name.
“—I’m different now. So you’ll have to get to know me again.”
“I’m different now, too,” and while you uttered yours as if it was an apology or a forewarning, he uttered his as a promise. A veiled promise that he was now the man that you wanted him to be after all those years.
He reached his hand out. “Hi, I’m Spencer Reid,” he hoped you’d play along.
You laughed, clearly intrigued at changes that had happened to him. Here he was, a germaphobe, reaching for a handshake to a stranger regardless of pathogens. You weren’t really a stranger, not really, but he wanted to write a new beginning. The last time was too tragic and ended with goodbyes. This time, this time, it’ll be perfect, he vowed to himself. A perfect fairytale with a happy ending that he could share with his kids with you one day.
“Hi, Spencer,” you reached out your hand into his, engulfing yours in his tight grip. “I’m Y/N.”
He watched as you got into the car, fastening your seatbelt and roll down the window. “I’ll call you.”
“Please do, I’ll be waiting,” you whispered out before backing away from the parking lot.
And he did.
And after a few dates, he slid back the ring that once hung around his neck, sitting near his heart, back to where it belonged—back to your fourth finger where the Romans once believed a vein ran directly to the heart. Vena Amoris, the vein of love. Where it will stay forevermore, never allowing time and the outside to separate what once was meant to be. Never allowing ‘him and you’ as separate, there was just ‘them’.
Warnings:hanahaki as its own has its own set of warnings( choking on flowers, blood, vomiting) angst? I guess ish idk never sure what's angsty enough anymore. There is character death, not gonna be specific or go into detail bout it, read to find out
You had just returned home from your latest travels due to the hanahaki getting really bad in your eyes, stopping your grand travel, you had already gone to see some major landmarks and places you were curious about. From going to the uk to see Big Ben and the London eye. To Japan to see the streets of Harajuku fashions and the view of Mt Fuji. To many landmarks and touristy spots in America and many more that you could list off.
When the flowers started coming up in bulbs, you thought it wise to take a break and go home, and you'd rather not pass on somewhere far from home.
So off on the first flight back and now in the comfort of your own home you lay.
Your body was growing weaker as you had a trash bin next to you in case the flowers came up again.
You could feel how slowly the hanahaki was taking everything from you. You were so tired. It was like you were constantly drained since your arrival home. Sometimes, you were able to eat something light, but other times, the flowers would come up alongside bits of food from your last meal. It was definitely getting worse.
Looking over to the letters you had written to her, you had recently wrote a final goodbye to her, unsure now what to do with the relatively large amount of envelopes you had written over the years to the person who didn't return your feelings. You were half tempted to send it to the nightclub you first saw her at. Maybe she went there a lot? If she did, the manager of the place would probably know her and give them to her for you.
No way did you have what it took to go find her and potentially break up a relationship or homewreck a situation. She deserved her joy.
The coughing had disrupted your sleep, and the occasional throwing up of food with your flowers had left you in a much weakened state. You just wanted to sleep right now.
Closing your eyes for a bit, hoping to grab some amount of rest, almost lulled into a sense of peace, you hear a knock at the door. Peaking an eye open, you contemplate if you should get up and see who it is, probably no one as you shut your eyes again,
But then the knocking came again, and you knew you could just ignore it, but something in you told you not to. You should answer it, you thought, so slowly you shuffle to the doorway, leaning against the wall for support. Finally, the trek from the couch to the door is made,
Choosing not to look through the peephole, you open the door, wanting to point the wandering lost traveler on their way, and then you regret doing so cause there stood her...
The cause of your pain.
She looks into your eyes with a surprised expression at the suddenness of the door opening, and then as if realizing here you were! her eyes widen a bit. Tanya couldn't help but feel something in her pull her towards the person in front of her. She just felt.....right, and this sensation surprised her that she was momentarily shocked and couldn't stop staring.
You stare into amber eyes that feel warm and right but are brought back to reality to remember she doesn't want you. The universe was cruel like that.
She keeps looking at you, unblinking as if frozen in time, all you could feel was discomfort in your throat as your eyes break contact and you cough into your elbow a wet congested sound. As if to break out of whatever trance she's in, she makes a move to look at her hand and peers her head to see how your strings attached, she takes a moment, unknown to you to school her features, then as if winning a prize she sends a dazzling smile your way.
All you can feel is discomfort, it clearly showing on your face before you swallow what little saliva in your mouth you had. "What do you want?" Your tone sounded flat, uncaring. You remind yourself you can't fall for her. Her smiles falters at your tone, "Hello, I'm Tanya, and I believe we're soulmates," she says in a more chipper tone. You look down and away from the eyes you wish you could spend an eternity with, "we are....." Perhaps that sounded a tad too defeated, but you couldn't find it in yourself to care as much to hide the discomfort and pain of the situation. Why was she here?
You don't notice due to looking away, but Tanya is even more confused at this development, 'why are you not over the moon to finally meet?' she can't help but think.
The silence that hangs between you slowly grows awkward. All you want to do is rest, but all Tanya wants to do is really meet you. You're not sure what to do as suddenly Tanya asks if she can come in. You open the door wider and try to get back to the couch. The fact that you lean against the wall for support does not go unnoticed by her. "Are you alright?" She asks concern evident. You can only mumble back a weak, "I'm fine," before getting back to the couch. You can't help but think that you feel the flowers are growing upwards and another fit will happen soon.
Tanya can't help but look around your place as she enters, a little dusty from the looks of it but the place also has little touches of personality she can't help but wonder more of who you are.
Tanya smells the floral scent first before realizing and then picks up on the notes of blood. Her mind racks for an explanation. There were no flowers around your place. She knows this scent, she's encountered it before. She can't help but look around hoping it isn't so, but as she approaches where you sit in exhaustion on the sofa, she sees the dark circles in you eyes, the slightly gaunt face from the inability to eat, the floral scent that slowly wafts from your mouth followed by a tinge of copper.
Seeing the garbage can by your feet, she peers into it, having her worst fears come true, you have hanahaki.
With eyes full of concern, she turns to you,
"You have hanahaki," the question tumbles from her mouth
Your head is resting on the back of the couch as you open one eye with a grimace.
"Yeah? What about it"
"Who caused this?" Is all she can ask,
Who did you fall for? who denied your affections and caused this cursed disease onto you is all she can wonder.
"Who?" You laugh a bitter laugh,
"Who do you think?"
She doesn't understand as confusion takes her face, trying to solve this puzzle. There were no images of anyone else in your life, and she had only just met you now.
"I saw you before, you know, almost a year ago"
You say, breaking the silence that she brought in the state of confusion
"I had decided to take a gap year to come look for you, and I did. I was so....naieve and hopeful then, and then I found you in a nightclub kissing some guy." You say the end part bitterly reminiscing the memories of that night
Realization dawns on her face
You look up at her, the brokenness in your eyes displayed all too clearly.
"I hope you're happy with him," you say through a smile, though the smile is clearly pained.
She? Was the cause of your hanahaki? Tanya didn't want to believe it. She was the cause of your pain...
You have to understand she loves you
And she's not saying that just because she knows hanahaki goes away with reciprocated love.
Her face shows hurt to think you could think that. She moves to declare that she does, in fact, love you
But all you can do is laugh at that, "You love me? You love me?" A chuckle escapes
"So what about the guy you were with? What about him?"
"He meant nothing to me. He means nothing to me even now," she tries to say
"I SAW YOU, I WAS THERE!"
you try to scream, it came out more hoarse than you intended. Part of you just wanted all of this to go away, the other part could feel the waves of sorrow and sensations of betrayal flaring up from the memory of the first time you saw her, your head was spinning as your emotions took over, some parts irrational jealousy some parts despair.
"So what was he? If he meant nothing, does that mean I'll mean nothing to you, too? Am I just a rebound to you? Are you just getting to know me and then trying to break me even more?
The pain in your voice is evident as your voice starts to get worse, your breathing starts to get labored, strained you start to cough,
And cough
And cough...
The stress of having to have this conversation to the pain of the feelings resurfacing from seeing her in person to actually meeting her made your connection grow, but this one moment started to make your hanahaki worse.
All the variables of the situation caused a reaction and spike in stress and emotions, you know a little more about your soulmate but that makes it worse as the agigtation of the events caused the hanahaki to grow exponentially, the flowers are in bloom and there's nothing you can do.
Tanya sees this and starts to panic
"No no no, you have to believe me, I love you! Please no," as she rushes forward to your side.
Those words fall on deaf ears as you begin to cough
You don't hear a word past no as you're focused more on trying to breathe.
As the coughing fit grew 10 fold you felt this was the worst it's been as the flowers you tried to grasp, wet bloody flowers that came from your mouth and slipped from your grip came unending, they never stopped coming out no matter how hard you try to get rid of them, as you gasp for air. Perhaps this was it is all you can think, partially losing the fight you start to give up.
Tanya watches on as she sees you try to pull out flowers, tossing them to the ground in wet puddles of blood and spit.
She turns your head and tries to help you get the flowers blocking your airway out of you but they wouldn't stop, the hanahaki was in its final stage she realizes and she was going to lose you...
You slowly stop the fight, and that sends a wave of fear to her.
She can't lose you as she suddenly throws caution to the wind, all her hope into this one shot. Fearful that the flowers might claim your life before she even got to know it. She held you close to her in a hug and whispered an apology before biting down on your neck.
You don't see or hear anything at that point, but you do feel the sensation of being held as you start to black out from lack of air. All is starting to slow...
But then, as if being thrown into a freezing lake by someone to wake you up, you suddenly jolt as fire then starts burning you. The pain is unbearable. Were you being burned? You thought you were finally going to find peace, but now all you feel is excruciating pain as you try to scream, but the flowers in your throat partially stop that. Is this a punishment for trying to push away your soulmate? Were the fates mad at you? As thoughts started to go as you gave into the pain.
The scene in this moment would look like a tragic painting in the eyes of an onlooker with no knowledge, a lady holding in her arms her love who's dying of hanahaki, petals, both stained with blood and not surround them on the ground as she whispers apologies and begs her lover to come back to her.
Tanya holds you and whispers her apologies, hoping that it isn't too late for the vampire venom to take effect.
This was a gamble, as she's heard of vampires before suffering the unfortunate circumstance of getting hanahaki. But usually, they'd have already been vampires for a while at that point, there's not been any known cases of a person being turned at the final stage of hanahaki...could it be that they don't make it? No, she's got to hope, you'll make it through this you have to...
She doesn't know what'd she'd do if you don't...
With the hanahaki muffling your screams she quickly goes around your place grabbing what you might need and finding your box of letters to her, grabbing that along she picks you up bridal style and carries you off to her car, she's going to take you home, being near humans would be too dangerous as a newborn.
A day passes, and she can't help but worry she stays by your side and waits, hoping that the venom can counter the hanahaki.
When she had gotten home, everyone came out to see her carrying you, the concern evident, and the realization that you were her mate also held some impact.
A day goes by and your heart beat stops your mouth still has flowers but the growth of them has slowed, some around the edges seemed to have wilted which she takes as a good sign, she tries to help take out the flowers hoping it'll help you.
There's not too much on hanahaki with vampires at such a late stage, usually if it's a normal vampire who's been around for a while they have ways around it, but if they don't fight it they get weakened, and it causes issues with life. But you were hopefully on your way to becoming a newborn, and she hasn't heard of any cases as such. So all she can do is stay by your side and wait, pleading to the fates that it works.
Whilst in this time though she does take to reading the letters you addressed to her, her heart warms at the oldest looking letter in the box, faded and worn down in an aged envelope with childish scrawl, she gets to know you through the years from the letters, and to say it's endearing is to say the least. It gives her hope that maybe you guys can make it through this.
The letter of you seeing her that night, though, hurts to read, she can feel the pain in the writing, and the next letters after a sense of you accepting your fate whilst traveling has her sad. Silently swearing to herself, she promises to show you that she does love you, that you are loved, and now that she's found you, she won't let you go.
On the third day, you awaken, your eyes open, red as blood.
Your instincts takes over screaming that you crave something to sate the inferno in your throat, as you move to sit up your eyes look around, landing on her, the instincts in you tell you that she's important to you. You move forward,
As Tanya calls for someone to bring her some blood, she has prepared for your awakening. Glad to see you had awakened, relieved she has more time with you, you look ever the part of a newborn besides the flowers cascading like a waterfall out of your mouth, overtime some had died and she had pulled some out but the core of the flowers was still there, she didnt want to risk it whilst you were still human. Now that you were immortal, she hoped it would hurt you a little less if she ripped the flowers out of your throat.
You try to move to her, but as she was handed an animal, she tackles you to the ground, keeping you down.
Apologizing saying it's gonna hurt as she rips the stems and flowers from your mouth with force, you gag as you feel stems and roots start to come up. Gasping and taking in a breath, there were still more stems deeper down your mouth, but this will have to do for now as she cracks open the squirrel and trickles the blood into your mouth, it tastes off but you drink regardless as it quenches the fire in your throat, you're able to swallow down the blood as you move to grab the squirrel draining it dry, she rushes off and drags in another animal, a doe, already taken down you move quickly and start to drain this one dry as well, despite the slight difficulty of the hanahaki slowly trying to regrow in your throat, you fight on still drinking.
As you drink, Tanya slowly runs her hands through your hair, praising you
"You're doing so good." Some part of you can't help but preen at the praise.
Eventually, after another animal or two, this ends as the thirst in your throat is quenched enough. Your mind clears for a moment to see her, really see her as you gain some semblance of control again, the bond of a mate is much more prominent whilst you're a newborn, and you almost forget about everything and give in to her
......
Almost.
A flash of the memory that hurt you about a year ago flashes through your mind, and in your emotional newborn state, you couldn't help but flinch. Part of your instinct screams to go to her, yet the part of you that's hurt and jealous fights back as you're torn.
Tanya sees this and can't help but feel pain at the conflict going on, she could see that you were torn between the intensity of the instincts for the bond to shine through versus the pain you had felt. It hurt to see you so conflicted. You didn't even realize you were a vampire yet, and that was a different bridge she would have to cross soon.
Not wanting to see your internal war anymore, she goes towards you, your eyes are shut as if you have a headache and are in agony. You don't feel it until she does it, but she's hugging you. Your mind tries to fight her, but your instincts wants you to melt into her. It hurts, the irrational side in you makes you want to cry, slowly, slowly, you start to break down as you stop fighting her hold.
She brings your head to the crook of her neck, cradling it in such a way, trying to comfort you.
It works as you stop fighting her.
You've calmed enough that she thinks she can speak and have you listen to her, so she starts.
"I know you believe I don't return your affections, but I do." You try to wiggle away at her words, but she uses all her strength to hold you there.
"You may not believe it, but I've lived a millenia before I could meet you", you stop squirming at that, confusion evident at the fact she said she's over 1000 years old.
"I had lost hope after a long time cause before I realized you were around, I had stopped looking at my string after all that time..."
"My string before you was dull and was short and lead nowhere.....I thought long ago that you were gone back then before I knew who you were, before I got to meet you"
"You have to know I never meant to hurt you when you saw me that night...I didnt know you were there and even though I didn't know, it's no excuse but even if I did know, you have to understand it was not my intention to hurt you...i would never hurt you intentionally...ever, you mean so much to me..."
Your mind brought the memory up and all you could feel was the desire to cry
"I've lived for a long time, and I once lost someone"
The jealousy rears it's green head around at who it could have been until her next words
"In a sense, she was basically my mother"
You stop and couldn't help but feel bad at the stupid feeling of jealousy. She had lost someone...
"This was long ago but our family at the time was really close, and the loss hurt...
You weren't around yet, and I didn't know how long you would take to be around, and the grief was all consuming...
It led me to turn to others, to just feel something..."
At this point, you were a mix of conflicted emotions...
"The man you mentioned that night meant nothing to me, my love. You say you saw me kiss him, and you might assume more, but I did nothing... I swear it"
"Something in me felt wrong after a bit, so I left, I can only assume the wrongness was the feelings through our bond..."
"I didn't realize it until my sister Irina, you may meet her later, pointed out to me that my string actually led somewhere, I decided to come looking for you after that"
"It may be hard to believe, but I am a vampire"
Yeah, that was definitely hard to believe you thought
"But when I found you and when...when the hanahaki almost took you I couldn't let that happen, I had only just found you and I didn't want to have to say goodbye, not before I could know you..."
"I'm sorry for bringing you pain, but I'm not sorry for changing you... you have to know how much you mean to me....I love you..."
You didn't know how to feel, a part of you felt her sincerity through her words and got a sense that she was being truthful....but the part of you that was still uncertain didn't know what to do...
"You don't have to believe me if you don't want to...but I will make it known for as long as I have to that I love you and I will always love you" she squeezes you a little tighter at those words
And for a second you let go of the denial for a bit that she doesn't actually love you, that what she says is false....and you can breathe a little easier, the hanahaki isn't entirely gone, there's that uncertainty to everything, but for now you let go of some of the feeling that's been hurting you, and this allows the hanahaki to weaken allowing you the breath that you no longer need.
You feel her turn and kiss your head, and some part of you warms at the gesture.
Your arms raise, and hug her back.
You know this won't be easy but you have to make it known.
"I forgive you... kind of...though part of me is still weary at all this.
Part of me feels like it can't trust you right away...another part of me despite this still holds love for you even after all of this. I'm confused, and I...I just don't know, I want there to be an us, but part of me feels that maybe that won't work..."
Tanya's unbeating heart hurts at the idea of the uncertainty in you, but she knows she would do whatever and tells you that she will try her best to mend the heart she accidentally broke even if it takes forever.
Her words soothe your pain a bit and the flowers relax a little more.
You know it won't be an easy road, but you and her will try to work to a point where you could be together...
You were both done waiting on the red string. It's finally brought you together. Now you have the road ahead to walk together in your eternity to figure this out.
07 OMG - the book (✿)
scaramouche x fem!reader
masterlist | previous | next
red is kazuha, blue is scaramouche.
you were sitting on the couch, eating some macarons nilou had bought yesterday. she mentioned about her favor and it required for you to go out, so you've gotten ready and just waiting for her.
around 2 minutes later, nilou got out of her room.
"yn! here's a book that kaveh borrowed from heizou, but since heizou's been busy for a few days he asked for someone to give it to his friend instead."
you nodded and took the book from nilou, questioning the said book once you saw what it was about.
"a crime book? why in the world would kaveh, out of everyone would borrow a crime book.." you pondered, until kaveh came out of the bathroom. "hey! i do read crime books sometimes, and do not ask me to give it to heizou's friend instead. i can't be assed to go anywhere."
you and nilou sighed in unison, and just went back to the conversation. "anyways, you're fine with this right, yn?" the redhead asked.
nodding, "anything for my love my wife my heart my everything!!" you said excitedly. "plus, i was planning on going to the library again today! who knows, i could meet pretty eyes guy.."
nilou chuckled and gave you a tight hug, "thank you, yn! now, i think it's time for you to get going, we arranged the time to be at 2 pm!"
checking the time, it was indded 1:47.
and with that, you left the dorm swiftly, not realizing the knowing looks from nilou and kaveh. the said male raised his hand up in a fist, "plan 1 is executed." he said as nilou fist bumped.
"may the best happen to yn, even if it will be unexpected." nilou smiled, thinking off to the future.
┊ ➶ 。˚ °
arriving at the library just on time, you read out a note nilou gave you addressing where and which person you have to go to.
looking around, white hair with a red streak... corner of the library near a window.... uses glasses and is probably writing.... ah! that's him.
you silently walked until you got in front of the described male. noticing your presence, he looked up and smiled.
"hello there. you must be yn, correct?" he said softly, with a smile. you nodded and gave a signal asking if you could sit in front of him or not. granting the permission, you're now sat in front of him.
you smiled back at him, "then.. you must be kazuha." and he nodded as you took out your hand and reached out to him. "it's very nice meeting you!! i hope we can be friends." you spoke.
"with pleasure, may i ask what else you're going to do here instead of giving me heizou's book back? i mean.. also excluding reading since it is quite obvious there's millions of books here.." kazuha smiled sheepishly.
you sweatdropped, "honestly.. i don't know, my friend just said to give a white haired male with a red streak of hair a crime book he borrowed. well- one of my friends also said to build a new friendship so here we are!"
kazuha nodded, and soon pondered.
"well then, how should we start? 21 questions? purely for friendship, nothing flirty or something of the sort."
smiling, you agreed. "i'll start, when's your birthday?"
"29th of october. when's your birthday?"
"(your birthday)."
he smiled and wrote it down in a notebook, "just so i could remember the birthday of my new friend. let's continue, which class are you in?"
"2A sumeru class, though i really don't know many people there.. including many people in the akademiya. i've only heard of names though i don't know what people look like, and i'm only close to three people. and i'm assuming you're in inazuma class?"
kazuha nodded, "i somewhat relate to you with not knowing many people here, i'm usually buried within poetry, literature, stuff like that. and i'm also close with three people." putting your hand on your chin, you've came with a conclusion. "it seems we're more similar than what i'd thought, huh. anyways, do you play any instruments?"
he smiled. "i do, i play the flute and guitar. leaning more to the flute though. the next question.. how old are you? if that's fine for me to ask." you clarified to him that it was alright to question. "i'm younger by a year than majority of the students in the second year, so with that logic i'm basically supposed to be in the first year. me next! what's your favorite food?"
"fish! any kinds of fish, honestly. what's yours?"
"hmm.. i like pastries a lot! and i like to bake when i do have free time. favorite song?"
"ditto though it's a really old song from 1998 i enjoy it a lot, or 505 probably! what about you?"
"..all too well and afterglow by taylor swift. and- before you ask, i'm doing okay!! i just love the whole song a lot. my friend complains about me playing those songs way too much."
kazuha chuckles, and you two continue on the conversation. not realizing that soon the clock struck to 5 pm.
┊ ➶ 。˚ °
"honestly, kazuha, i had a lot of fun talking to you. i generally don't talk to a lot of people but this was a pleasant experience, oh! i forgot to ask, what's your twitter handle? assuming you have one, of course." you asked, giving your phone for him to type down.
kazuha smiled, "i do, here it is. @ kae.dehara. and thank you, for your time! i'll be going now, or else my roommate would get worried about my whereabouts." and with that, he returned your phone back.
you grabbed your phone from his grasp and thanked him, "alright, bye kazuha! don't forget to follow me back, and thank you too, for your time."
with that, both you and kazuha left. him leaving first, and you following behind.
and from afar, a male was just done talking to the librarian about a book he had borrowed a few days ago. he walked to his usual sitting spot, to find a book. pondering for a few moments before deciding to open the said book, not expecting a note inside attached to the very first page.
..what's the hurt in saving this number?
he thinks, and eventually caved in. he felt that he needed someone to talk to, anyways. this person could be someone who can help with that.
"..i can't believe i'm doing this." he sighed, and just sat down and read the book on his hand. hiding away from the gazes of people inside the library.
┊ ➶ 。˚ °
you got back to the dorm, having an odd feeling that you forgot something.
fuck. the book!
• so... hi 🫶🏻 i was motivated with making a new chapter and i got so excited i had to make it asap abfkfjb
• probably my favorite chapter so far!! and to put this out there, yn and kazuha's relationship in this smau is purely platonic. in the future it may be implied that he has a gf, but it's just you in another smau! it's a kazuha smau i have planned in the future 🤭
summary :: wanting to go back to your dorm from the library, and accidentally leaving a friend's book there not knowing she has the intention of making you give it to someone she's trying to set you up with, a note inside with your number. without anyone realising, the book is in the hands of someone else, and you then wake up to a message from an unknown number.
author's note :: andd finally a chapter where scara actually talks and it's not in twitter 🫶🏻 i've finished the playlist for this smau, it's linked here!!
