Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024 • 9 p.m. EST: Eiji Akutagawa, Hisako Hanaoka & Masayuki Sano (Sapporo 1994)
It's been a minute! Eiji has gained notoriety as "boner phantom" for his famously extended self-groping during "Point of No Return." THAT SAID, this is a great cast with a lot of interesting moments and a devastating final lair!
As always, stream will be on cy.tube and shy anons are welcome. For more info, please see the Saturday Streams FAQ! Link and password will be posted here at 8:45.

Weekly Raoul Reviews
Reviewing Nicky Wuchinger, Oliver Thornton, and Masayuki Sano.
Nicky Wuchinger’s sweet. He’s authoritative without ever becoming arrogant, even in Notes. In fact I rather liked his more toned down Notes as it made him feel more like friends with the managers. He didn’t do much on the rooftop that stood out but he did seem to be going out of his way to never be rough during whybmh and was very sweet in aiaoy, he was very expressive during that scene.
Oliver Thornton was kinda weird. His voice was a little more boyish than some of the Raouls I’ve been watching, and didn’t sound as strong vocally. His acting was a little strange as well. A lot of his lines and actions just looked weird, and his kissing was definitely questionable. And his final lair was...good god I do not know what he was doing in that noose, but it was the opposite of acting. I definitely think he deserved to be made fun of for that but overall maybe didn’t deserve as much shit as phandom gave him maybe.
Masayuki Sano is very good. Very classic, a lovely baritone, a good air of authority as most Japanese Raouls tend to have. On the rooftop he’s just so worried about Christine, there’s this sense of desperation to whybmh, he just wants to make everything ok for her. His hugs also look like some of the best hugs in the world. Super affectionate throughout aiaoy.

Usually it's actors who start as Raoul go on to be Phantom, but has there ever been Phantom actors who go on to be Raouls? Starting first as Phantom, but then become more Raoul instead?
I answered a question like that a few years ago here, and the one candidate I could think of was Kalle Sepp from Estonia. Someone in the comments mentioned Masayuki Sano, though he's a funky case in that he played Raoul, then the Phantom, onstage but voiced Raoul in the Japanese dub for the movie. Other names I mention there are Nicky Wuchinger (another funky case, as he only came back as Raoul to emergency cover) and John Martin Bengtsson (though in his case he's understudied both roles and was also hopping to different productions entirely). If you count Love Never Dies, then you can maybe include Bronson Norris Murphy (understudy Raoul in Phantom, understudy and later principal Phantom in LND, then back to understudying Raoul in Phantom).
Any others since I last answered this question a couple years ago?

This is the first time I’ve ever seen Sano Masayuki bare-faced fffff... I’ve only ever seen his recording in the Phantom costume, and a Covid-era interview where he has the medical mask on.
I dunno why I think it’s so funny that in the Don Juan scene, there’s a bunch of people wearing suits while everyone else are in casual sweaters and shirts. I think those are the managers and Raoul, right? So I guess the suit makes sense for rehearsal, it just looks so funny LMAO.
Also I’ve forgotten if in the Hannibal scene the two guys were supposed to be holding props or not? There are two dudes who has their arms stretched out, but they’re not holding anything. I remember in the movie the male dancers had chains and ropes and stuff, but I forgot about the stage version.

I figured with all this talk about boots and masters, etc., etc., I thought we’d take a little step back in time where filming took real balls with real consequences of getting caught:
1994 Japan starring: Eiji Akutagawa, Hisako Hanaoka, Masayuki Sano
For those of you who weren’t around in 1994, check out this Best Buy ad for a top of the line, small camcorder from that year:
Now sneak that into the theatre and not look obvious filming. I hate when people complain about the quality of old boots. It’s like bitch you clearly weren’t alive to know the strife of a huge video camera or how VHS tape deteriorates. If the idea of getting caught with large, expensive video equipment didn’t scare people from recording, my giving away a boot isn’t going to deter people away from filming.
So come watch with us and see the origin of this:
1994 Japan starring: Eiji Akutagawa, Hisako Hanaoka, Masayuki Sano
