anyway since a lot of it might be getting overwritten soon now that filoni is revisiting the inquisitorius characters (i assume he is? he wrote basically all of tales of the jedi right): here's what i understand of the inquisitor lore outside of the rebels show

Palpatine was keeping an eye out for Jedi who seemed at odds with the Order and/or susceptible to the dark side during the war (and likely earlier, much like with Anakin), either in person or using various agents (can be assumed and is shown in Rise of the Red Blade). this likely includes Jedi with specific knowledge or skills (the implication i got from Cere in Jedi: Fallen Order)

the groundwork for what would become the Inquisitorius was already in place by the time of the war's end

the Grand Inquisitor was a former Temple Guard who felt held back by the order and had a grudge against Jocasta Nu specifically (pretty sure this comes from Rebels and shows up in Darth Vader 2017). he was recruited at some point prior to Order 66 by Palpatine personally and promised leadership of the organization. this happened before Vader's conversion, and neither Vader nor the GI were informed of each other's existence at first (DV 2017).

several former Jedi were recruited willingly (eg. the GI, Iskat Akaris/13th Sister, Prosset Dibs/10th Brother, 5th Brother according to Battle Scars, Reva Sevander/Third Sister)

most (?) inquisitors were recruited by force, specifically torture upon being captured, usually during Order 66 (eg. Trilla Suduri/Second Sister (JFO), Seventh Sister (described as feeling broken in the Force in RotRB), Tualon Yaluna (RotRB), Masana Tide/Ninth Sister (JFO))

their primary purpose seems to be killing Jedi survivors rather than expanding their ranks by recruiting them. although it is a fear for those hunted by them, the inquisitors rarely try it, even if they do taunt their prey with the possibility (Masana's dialogue in JFO). this may have changed in the later years as the inquisitor numbers dwindled (i'm pretty sure they were actually trying to convert Ezra during Rebels. please correct me.)

they do, however, often try to kidnap Force-sensitive children too young to have been pre-Empire Jedi. this appears to include any age group and be the continuation of Palpatine's project during the clone wars. (i believe this is expanded upon in Rebels? it's a plot point in DV 2017 with Eeth Koth's infant daughter. also, i might have made this up but it seems to be the implied threat in Jedi: Survivor.)

the numbered titles appear to reference the order of initiation, with the GI being implicitly the First but never referred to as such. the numbers do not change over an inquisitor's tenure and do not seem to be replaced when an inquisitor falls. there do not seem to be duplicates (except for the Third Brother, who appears in a reference book written before Obi-Wan Kenobi and whose existence seems to have been overwritten by the Third Sister's. her character's age and implied backstory do not fit this naming assumption, however.)

if the naming is sequential, then siblings 2 through 10 join very shortly after Order 66, and number 13 gets initiated within months (RotRB). we still don't know 11 and 12.

there is some number of active inquisitors without a numbered title, who still go by their old names. these seem to have similar duties and authority to their numbered colleagues and are also referred to as "brother" or "sister", at least by other inquisitors. (Tualon in RotRB)

there might (?) be some hierarchy to the numbers, with lower numbers corresponding to a higher position. or not. (Third Sister seems to think she's next in line after the deaths of Grand Inquisitor and Second Sister as per Obi-Wan Kenobi. there's a confusing exchange somewhere in Rebels where Seventh and Fifth pointedly emphasize their titles to each other while having a disagreement but i have no idea what that means.)

inquisitors do occasional solo missions but mostly seem to work in pairs or small groups. the chain of command during these missions seems ambiguous, possibly intentionally so. Darth Vader joins in for some missions, where all inquisitors defer to him.

originally recruited inquisitors are not trained after joining outside of sparring with each other, which seems entirely voluntary. sometimes Darth Vader drops in and tests them, often ending in mutilation. they are allowed and perhaps even encouraged to study the dark side on their own time, though they do not have many opportunities to do so, possibly by design. (RotRB)

inquisitors are not Sith, and are not officially intended to become Sith, though as dark side adepts they are a potential source of replacement apprentices. (i believe this is fan speculation and out of universe material more than actual text but would love to be proven wrong)

Inquisitorius personnel have authority over some other Imperial forces, and have a long-term rivalry with the ISB (JS). they are generally an unknown force.

the organization was founded on Coruscant and headquartered there for about 5 years after its founding. (DV 2017) afterwards, its HQ transferred to Nur. however, that facility was already in heavy use immediately after and possibly before Order 66 (backstory in JFO).

the members get killed off pretty quickly. 6th and 10th die within a year, 2nd and 13th (along with her bf without a number) within 5 years, 3rd and 9th 5 years after that (Reva actually leaves, as we know). the ones that make it to Rebels die in that show. Fourth Sister is unaccounted for.

inquisitors tend to die by Vader or Ahsoka and Maul.

Boi, let's begin with the mental preparations: Reva was only about ten years old when Purge happened, and she watched her family and friends die. She got out of the Jedi Temple and went underground until she was ready and able to join the Inquisitorious. She walked into the recruitment office when The Ninth Sister was there that day, and I quote Masana Tide verbatim: "Welcome to Fortress Nur, how evil are ya?"

Reva flicked the hulking Dowuitin Mass out of a nearby window with the flick of her wrist.

Reva only needed one motivation : Kill Vader.

The Second Sister went off on an outstandingly long-winded three hour tangent about Bracca being a disaster. She just wants power. She has a British accent, a smoking hot, conventionally attractive body, and a lexicon that would make Merriam Webster blush with the strength to burn The Library of Alexandria.

Reva was a child who wanted to kill her literal demon. She survived on her own for ten years with so much hate and rage in a galaxy that burned every day and night with the same sentiments.

Reva has a motivation and a clear-cut one at that. The second sister wants power, and the third sister is power.

Trilla and Reva deserved better (but at least Reva lived in Kenobi, so?)

Where do you think the Inquisitors were during the Jedi Purge?

That would depend on the Inquisitor! Also, I'm just now realizing how fucked this early Inquisitorius timeline is. What we can infer/what we know:

Grand Inquisitor: Probably at the Temple. Since he was a Temple Guard and in on the plot from the beginning.

Trilla: So it's not exactly clear to me where she and Cere escaped from when they went into hiding, but they had a group of younglings with them. So I would presume they were at the Temple, but I could be wrong. Someone who has played the game feel free to correct me.

Reva: We know she was at the Temple

Fourth: No idea, no guesses.

Fifth: I haven't finished Battle Scars yet, but it is implied he was not a captured Jedi who was turned, but in on the plot from the very beginning. So, realistically, he could have been anywhere. He didn't have to run.

Bil Valen: I don't really think it's ever made clear where or how he came to join the Inquisitorius. But he's there when Vader arrives, which is very soon after Order 66. So he was either an original adopter or very close to Coruscant.

Seventh: A reference guide says she was a survivor of Order 66, but she was also one of the very early Inquisitors. So I would guess she was very central to Coruscant.

Eighth: Same as Sixth.

Ninth: Now this is interesting, because we KNOW Masana was captured and turned. But she is also there when Darth Vader is introduced to the Inquisitorius, which is very shortly after Order 66. So I'm going to guess she was at the Temple and picked up right away similar to Reva.

Tenth: We know he was a punished Jedi and he was at the Temple for rehabilitation. He was confined to working in the Jedi Archives. We don't know if he was an original adopter or turned, but we at least know where he was.

Iskat and the Twi'lek boy: I guess we'll find out soon enough, eh? Sounds like Iskat was captured and turned based on the book description. I would love it if the Twi'lek she falls in love with is the Inquisitor who turned her but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

But all this reeeeaaally begs the question: are we disregarding the comics canon where the Grand Inquisitor and Vader did not know about each other before their fight in the Jedi Archives? Because in Kenobi, it sounds like Inky was dumping Anakin's corpse trail into gutters and picking off his leavings. If we have half a dozen Inquisitors and proto-Inquisitors running around the Temple killing Jedi at the same time Anakin is cutting down Younglings how does he... uh, not notice that?

Come to think of it, some of the comics stuff is interesting at second glance. A Jedi is able to get Purge Troopers to turn on the Inquisitors just by saying "Execute Order 66". So, did they not have exemptions programmed into their orders? Was Sidious just like "eh well if they die to the clones, then they weren't good enough to hunt down the surviving Jedi anyway"? Maybe one day we'll get an Inquisitor POV of Order 66, and then maybe we can be done with those flashbacks eh? Lmao

West Meets East in Explosion of Psych-Rock Perfection

Kikagaku Moyo’s album Masana Temples lives on the precarious border of extreme pretention but manages to stay within the camp of sanity enough to make it a perfect vehicle to bring a yoga-amateur closer to ‘om’.  A combination of unmistakably eastern sounding music aesthetic brought together with the warmth and familiarity of 60’s-influenced psychedelic rock, this album allows the listener to be enveloped in the atmosphere of blissed-out rock music from bandmates that proudly hail from Tokyo.  To the western ear, it feels concurrently recognizable while having a tendency toward a curious unknown, and one standout, in my opinion, accomplishes this sentiment beautifully.  The third track, Nazo Nazo, features only Japanese lyrics, and I will save you the pain of watching me fail to google-translate that into something sensible, but the instrumental section alone has enough interesting and unique detail to give an impression of just what makes this band so engaging to listen to.

Let’s start with the tonality of the instruments.  Clear, precise, yet warm and comfortable and never straying toward the harshness of poorly recorded and thin-sounding psychedelic records of the past, this song allows the listener to simply melt into its atmosphere.  We’re first presented with a robust sounding electric bass that sounds thick and really interjects a lot of energy into the song as it diverts away from the main melody line that the guitars and vocal take up in unison throughout most of the track’s duration.  Whenever the main melody ascends and creates tension for the listener, the bass is there to back things off and smooth out the song, and similarly the bass creates tension as well by diverting from the predictability of the melody that adds a kind of call and response to the song.  The bass overall takes a laxer approach toward reaching the tonic and takes more liberties with the somewhat predictable rhythms of the melody.

Drums provide a very laid back and soothing accompaniment to the song and seem to be added to taste rather than functioning as a fundamental rhythmic element to the song.  Gentle, probably hand-tapped toms add some counterpoint to the tracks but are included with the intention leaning closer to a symphonic interpretation than a thrashing end-of-measure drum fill as is more common within rock music.  Similarly, a ride cymbal is lightly tapped throughout the track throwing in some triplets here and there to offset the very passive drum arrangement.  Kikagaku Moyo subtracts common elements of rock percussion from the track to imbue a more soothing and ethereal presence to the song and to allow the serene and pervasive aesthetic and melody to dominate over the rhythm.  It is fastidious and so tasteful, like a chef adding fresh herbs to a dish right before sending it out of the kitchen.

Now onto those velvety sounding guitars.  There’s two major guitar lines in the track, one panned to the hard right which swims through chords and intoxicates the listener with its chorus effect and the other panned to the left which follows the vocal melody with complete precision.  The two guitar tracks are so smooth and enveloping, and they have such a perfect balance in the mix that calls attention to them at the right moments while being able to disappear into the background and add to the tracks weight and atmosphere at just the right times, as well.  There’s even a guitar solo that comes in place of the vocal lead, but its presentation is again so tranquil and soothing that it almost sounds like an electrified vocal track itself.  The solo brings counterpoint to the main melody but sounds so sure of itself and unhurried that it almost sounds like the listener has already heard it a thousand times and can sing along to it out of sheer intuition.  Furthermore, the staccato lyrics blend into the song with a delicate approach and do even more to fill in missing frequencies that add thickness and a greater sense of familiarity to a song which so expertly utilizes instruments.  

Overall, this band seems to bring all the most loved elements of psych-rock with a decidedly western flavor that manages to sound exquisite and earthy, while retaining its own distinctive identity.  Check out the bands YouTube performance on KEXP that further demonstrates all they’re capable of and you even get the added bonus of being able to see and listen to an electrified sitar.  There’s simply nothing cooler than that, and realistically not much cooler than the band themselves.  With an ear for harmonic complexity and an endless amount of taste, this band adds a fresh new perspective to the psych-rock scene, and I’m thankful to live in an age where this band can get the credit and attention they deserve from listeners around the globe.
