Hey thanks for all the 90s Superboy appreciation. It’s helped me figure out his personality amongst all the fanon confusion back when I started reading comics. I was also wondering if there were any Superboy ‘94 issues you’d recommend?

I’ve already read #1-15 as well as some arcs in-between like Match’s introduction, Kon getting his name, and the Hypertime arc, but didn’t know where else to go from there. (Or if there’s Kon-centric issues that are worthwhile elsewhere. I’ve read YJ98, Reign of Supermen, and started SB and the Ravers so far.)

of course!! 90s kon my beloved :) tbh my first suggestion is just the entire run because even the shittiest issues (and. believe me. some of them, such as 86, are REALLY SHITTY.) have things i want to dissect about them. (for example, 86 includes the continuation of the trend of kon being sexually harassed in ways that the narrative plays as humorous, which while infuriating to read, to me can be interpreted as the way kon himself laughs off his own trauma + refuses to take it seriously as a form of deflection/denial/repression).

BUT as for individual arcs...

honestly, if you can stomach it, i would highly recommend reading losin' it (#25-#30). it is the worst of the knockout stuff but it reads like such a fascinating depiction of abuse that i can't lie, i'm turning it over in my head constantly. it reads very intentionally like a story about abuse in some parts (like when mae lashes out at kon for being in an abusive relationship and only drives him further into the arms of said abuser, or when kon finally realizes he's being used and is devastated by it), and also contains kon's sb94 on-page suicide attempt, which rotates in my mind at all times as well.

meltdown (#38-#41) is largely nothing but does have a couple of cute kon & roxy + kon & superfam moments. #42 is a good issue for being sad about kon and how he is a good boy, though! love that one.

#46 is the kontana breakup and is a pretty good look at kon's psyche and the Problems there. i think if you care about delving into the issues kon has as a result of being groomed, this one's a good read, albeit infuriating in several ways. ron marz my enemy for life

green lantern (1990) #94 and sb94 #47 are a two-parter i really enjoy! this is the one where kyle teaches kon how to draw.

#48 is PIVOTAL in that it's where kon finally finds out that rex leech is the fucking worst. he is only little. we have to kill rex leech.

#49 - #53 i wouldn't say are necessary, but if you like kon being really sad with a side of "what the fuck? why are there furries? what the fuck? what the fuck?!" then by all means go for it. this arc is really something. i don't know. i mean i guess i would recommend it in that i'm still so bewildered by it that i have a lot to say about it even now, but also man what the fuck.

i also recommend #56 both for the overall context of what kon is doing at cadmus now, and why he's more willing to trust them than before, AND because it's the introduction of dr. serling roquette my BELOVED. #57-#58 are good because not only is serling there, but also there's a little follow-up on kon & roxy, AND also the plot is insane but in a very fun, comic book way.

you've already read #59 and #60-64, so i won't go into those (love them) but i will say don't skip #65 - it's the emotional fallout of hypertension and includes kon's friends loving him! yaaay

#69 is largely nothing EXCEPT for the bit with kon, serling, and knockout that makes me So sad. it's a follow-up to hypertension arc where kon confronts knockout in prison thinking maybe she still has something in common with the good knockout from the other universe, and he is sad about it. again, i just think it's a fascinating depiction of the aftermath of abuse and it makes me sad.

READ #70 IT HAS KON&CLARK OF THE BEST SORT IN IT AT THE BEGINNING!!!! IMPORTANT TO ME FOREVER!!!!!!!

since you've read yj98 i'm assuming you're already familiar with sins of youth + tana's death, so i'll skip over that too! #75 is for some of the fallout of that and kon feelings. #76 - #79 is an arc i wouldn't say is like, vital, but i did enjoy it a lot for the scifi and the kon-being-like-superman of it all. it's about what he does while depowered (gets kidnapped by aliens, joins an alien slave underground freedom movement, etc. you know how it is.)

#83 is cute. #84 is Important To Me specifically for the bit at the end (and it's where i got my blog title from hehe). #85 is the kon&cass + tim&kon issue and it is Everything to me, highly rec this one. #86... well, as mentioned, it overall sucks, but. read the last page to explain what happens next, because...

#87 - #91 IS THE BEST ARC IN THE BOOK BAYBEEEEEE. clone baby guardian arc lets fucking GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

#92 is the kon gay trauma nightmare sequence. 10/10 recommend

#93 is the joker last laugh tie-in. largely nothing but there is a really cute panel of kon in a skirt

#94 - #100 are about kon being homeless in metropolis and frankly these issues suck. dan didio my enemy for life as well. i would rec maybe skimming #94 for the idea of whats happening (warning. it sucks) and then skimming through #100, specifically just for the ending with superman because it kinda gives you a picture of how sad kon is at this point.

some messy morning headcanon babbling about the main cast's future kids or other related four gen stuff while it's on my mind

I am not gonna list every possibility for every possible ending or love interest for Sol here but prolific parent Sol is said to parent "dozens of children" - with a plural s! - while in peace timelines the council asks them to keep it in the low twenties, and the only number that really fits both criteria is twenty four. Twenty Four. Twenty Four fucking children holy shit oh my God Sol what the FUCK-

If Cal doesn't end up with Sol and Tammy is either dead or with Sol herself, he eventually settles down with Helio hydroponics farmer Bluebell "Belle"; They have an insane ten children together, including two sets of twins, as they both are eager to help the colony grow as much as possible.

If Sol and Cal stay together and Tammy is still alive, she eventually settles down with a pair of Helio soldiers, Pyrite "Py" and Obsidian "Obi", having been a surrogate for one of their three kids together, and then going on to have the trio's collective fifth child (the one made "the old fashioned way").

If Cal and Tammy either start dating in game or start dating in the epilogue, including Echinacea the two of them go on to have an even more insane twelve children together, including a set of triplets and a set of twins.

If Vace and Anemone aren't broken up, then they canonly have three kids together in the epilogue. (While text in the game files covers if they stayed together after Vace got therapy, I'm fairly certain that the game itself requires them to be broken up for Vace's final love event to happen.)

If Vace gets the therapy he needs, then he later goes on to have four children with fellow Helio soldier Hyacinth "Cici"; they attempted to go for an even mix of boys and girls, but they grew up to be all girls.

The one pregnancy Marz will surrogate is for Helio soldier Protogenos "Gen", another one of Rex's lovers; Although the kid does call Rex dad, there's never any assumption she's their mom.

The children Tang might create with her genetics are the only ones not fully accounted for in my headcanon list atm, and this is just because it would include needing to make a paradox not-sibling for each child for timelines where Tang does not give her dna to any children; The only two that I've settled on right now are a pair of twins born to and raised by Helio (ex-)soldiers Intelligentsia "Jenna" and Bastion "Bas", with both parents having their own twins

Rex, forever the maddest of lads and a prime example for why you need to spay and neuter your cats and dogs, could have anywhere from eight to seventeen children calling him dad from four to eight co-parents (with many of them not being in relationships with one another), and that's before any possible children he might have with Sol are added into the mix; Irregardless of how he's not the biological father of many/most of those children, I think that Tangent wants to strangle this man a little anyways

Bonus round! Auntie Seedant (or Nannie Seedant now) could have anywhere from nine to eighteen grandchildren; Stratus will eventually go on to have to children with his future partner doctor Enlightenment "Ten", Cumulus is guarenteed to have seven children with his future partner xeno whisperer Effervescence "Ves", while Cirrus might be a co-parent six children with farmer Nectarine "Nena", and we already covered Anemone's maybe kids above; Nimbus never has any direct children of his own, but he has a lot of kids in his own way, growing up to be (one of) the colony's future teacher(s)

While trying to investigate one man’s suspicious activity, they have trouble navigating this new life.

But they almost don’t want to leave.

Mae and Magna run a circus, which to them was more of a buffet. Half siblings and both part demon, they travel together and put on shows to unsuspecting victims. It’s not only until they meet Flora, an investigative journalist/ yoga instructor, do they realize someone is onto their scheme. Along the way of their game of hide and seek, they unravel a plot by an immortal seeking human threatening to take over the spirit world and destroy their home as they know it.

(I liked the thought of demons in the modern age traveling in an rv. Which they do lol)

Guy Normal was living a, well, normal life. That was before met Marz, a creature not-quite-human looking for crime and an assistant to go with it. Promising he’d work with her if they solved one case, they end up going down a spiral of solving a years old mystery, and an organization who’s determined to stop them.

Haunted House Hunting:

(This would be a reality show with interviews style.)

Malt and Cherry are realtors, realtors who get the worst houses to sell…Including the haunted ones.

Their boss sends them out on a special job to de-hauntify prime real estate all over the town, essentially turning them into exorcists on the go.

Only, their job turns ethically confusing when the two ladies discover the stories behind each ghost.

Will they sell the houses? Will the ghosts get sent back to the grave? Or will new connections be made, dead or alive?

if i am not mistaken Sol is marze's stranger, but does Sol have a sunny counterpart, or has he jsut not been drawn yet?

if not i totally get that but im just wondering because sol is a very cool character to me esp with his whole god parallels and stuff,, and what kind of role does sol play? does he kinda peek in and out when marze needs a breather most, or a constant, or just an anomaly?

and for art purposes... does sol have a sunny face or is he different entity..

((if you dont have all the answers to this i totally get it, marzenie is a work in progress so i dont wanna like push too hard but this is just me being friendly curious :3))

also ugreigrjeg i was thinking ab marze's lantern.. an how it runs on blood.... and for some reason i was thinking "yeah ok the world of marzenie is shaped like heart and... hearts have blood" and also thinking deltarune and... my brain went "what if marze harvested blood for his lantern by like stabbing the earth kris deltarune style, pretty much representing how he's actively harming himself to continue being in marzenie, as he feels he deserves" and i felt the distinct need to share this for no reason

NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR RANTING ABOUT MARZENIE MARZENIE IS BUILT TO BE RAMBLED ABOUT- anyway!

I LOVE THIS ASK… Sol

So first thing, yes Sol is like Basil’s stranger, No Sol has no other counterparts (i don’t count the moon parasite as a counterpart)

This has a lot to do with the fact that Marzenie is so involuntary for Basil, in fact he tries to separate it as much as he can from the real world due to his guilt around how people are represented in Marzenie

As for how close Sol and Sunny are? Well, I tend to think of Sol as like Sunny but with everything that could be perceived as a “flaw” removed, his hair is separated in neat, defined shapes, His face is smoothed out like varnished wood, and most of all… Sol is Happy, because that’s the one thing Basil truly NEEDS Sunny to be, those other differences are more a reflection of Basil failing to see the ways Sunny has messed up (the biggest of these being his perception of ‘fault’ for Mari’s death, this is one of the reasons I characterize Sol as a bit naive, he’s supposed to a being of true innocence, someone ultimately INCAPABLE of doing wrong)

Visually, here’s how I draw them

The general shapes are the same but Sol’s features are just that tiniest bit exaggerated… like Barbie’s with their big eyes

And with how he appears, I’d say he shows up when Basil really does NEED him, he’s a wandering presence that Marze spends his time searching for but he only actually shows himself when Marze needs help achieving a goal that would otherwise be impossible or escaping from some kind of danger- he’s Basically a deus ex machina but without the machina- I have it in my head that there’s several things that are “scripted losses” in Marzenie (me using game terms again) where Marze gets into mortal peril and out of nowhere… a wooden hand pushes open a door, or holds a rope on place or moves a inconvenient roadblock- but he’s always gone before Marze has the chance to interact with him

hope that enlightens things a bit around Sol and his Nature, another thing I’d like to point out is that the biggest reasons I describe Sol as a parallel for stranger is that while Stranger is a distressing presence that will ultimately push Sunny in the right direction, Sol is the opposite, a comforting presence that will ultimately push Basil in the wrong direction…

Well isn’t this fucking great. Once again the new student was upstaging you. Well not really, but it felt like it! Any time you’d answer a question, he’d answer the next one. He’s was so annoying and infuriating and- not hot. You’d never let yourself think that. Never.

“I’m fine.” You mumble as you close your notebook and put it in your bag.

“Are you sure? Because class ended a minute ago and you’re still sat here” he smirks as he leans over your desk.

“I’m fine. I just zoned out” you say as you pick up your bag and throw your r over your shoulder

“Let me hold your things love” he says softly. And when you freeze he takes your bag off your shoulder “we have 2nd period together too” he smiles.

He has a nice smile.

The walk to class is so extremely embarrassing. Your friends are never gonna let you live this down. Of course the first time I hit walks you to class you absolutely despise him; of course.

George drops your stuff at your desk and smiles as he walks away and your cheeks are left burning.

This repeats itself for a few days, George dropping hints, you being too angry to pick up on them. So he takes matters into his own hands.

“Would you guys maybe want to convince y/n to run for prom Queen?”

Luckily for him, you were already planning on it.

The morning announcements rang through the classroom, boring the class and killing you with anticipation until you hear

When the lunch bell rang you grabbed your things and walked over to the parking lot where you saw George and one of his friends. When George made eye contact with you he smiled before shooing off his friend.

“Hello” he said, smile still stuck to his lips.

“Hi George” you say, sounding suspicious

“Look, y/n. What did I do to make you so angry towards me! You seem lovely and people adore you, so, what did I do?” He asks, you sigh

“Nothing George, it’s nothing, you just seemed cocky” you say, he grabs you hand gently.

“I promise I’m not” he giggles and you nod

“I can tell” you breathe a small laugh and his face lights up at your small smile

chat i had the biggest ghost and pals hyperfixation when i was 14…like it was so bad every fucking math class i would use my airpods secretly and listen to the songs on repeat while also drawing the characters on my paper. and when i wasn’t doing that i was just constantly thinking about it and looking up shit on the wiki and joining discord servers about it…

btw the fandom is so ass (or at least was?) a lot of people were obnoxious asf

i legit had to pry myself away from it becus i was like chronically online at that point 💀 not blaming that one on the fandom or franchise honestly it was my own fault but i’m just saying it made matters worse

and yet i still revisit it every couple months and have such a strong urge to draw the characters once again aughdkfkfkr but i think it’s a healthy relationship now so that’s good

my friend even got me a tamari plush which was legit the last song/character i remember seeing new content of before fully leaving the fandom which was kinda ironic (but not complaining at all it’s adorable i cherish it and i’m pretty sure it took months/years to come so i was prob into it when it was ordered)

i was also so deep that i listened to most of the songs in the marz mitzi era and i tried to listen to some of those again and good god they hurt my ears (in the most respectful way possible; i cannot make music for the life of me and i obviously know that ghost improved)

anywayssss uhm just wanted to say black and white is an underrated gem and the whole communications case could honestly be like turned into some prime time tv type shit and it would blow up i guarantee IM GIVIN YALL FREE IDEAS HERE!!!!

lastly i also wanted to see if anyone is in the fandom currently and wanted to be mutuals and like maybe fill me in on stuff if you want LMAO cus i’ll see art of like pathological facade and new songs that i don’t even know the name of now and feel like i’m old 😭 i know i just spent half of this post shitting on it but like i said some of it was my own fault and the franchise itself genuinely does hold a place in my heart

Finished Superboy (1994). It’s a really interesting run all together, in that it’s a run full of complicated story ideas, often let down in execution. The one through line is too high expectations on too young a character.

The Karl and Barbara Kesel writing team are probably my favourite on the entire book. The biggest crime is that Barbara never got more than two issues in her own name, AND that due to time and history we will never know how much input Barbara had on the initial run of #1-30. But I can see it. She’s there, too, even if it’s simply in terms of discussing plot points and characterisation.

Kesel had the best settings and side character development as well. When I think of pretty much all my favourite storylines, there’s a Kesel behind them. (Also some of the weirdest plots. Like the sentient animals and the weird hippies who commune with machines)

I want to say nobody understands Knockout except Karl Kesel but wow do none of the other writers ever get what Kesel was trying to do with Kay.

I do also like some of what Ron Marz did, but my biggest frustration is that Kesel and Marz both wanted to write about an exploited child star…but never really understood the storyline the other was advancing. Which led to some of the plot incoherence (see Marz successfully moving Tana into realising Kon was 16, and the ping pong back and forth over Tana and Roxy’s feelings towards Kon).

In hindsight I do have to wonder how much impact Eddie Berganza had on the development of the narrative that Kon’s just into any woman in his eyeline. Because it’s there, and different writers are more blatant about it than others.

Jay Faerber using his three issues just to basically do some stuff he didn’t have time to get to in Titans is the funniest shit ever. However, can’t go past Jim Harper (clone) getting to meet Lian Harper. My ENTIRE heart.

Joe Kelly was a ride, because he ping ponged back and forth between some of the most heart wrenching characterisation you’ve ever seen, hilarious visualisation of deep issues about Kon as a character, and some of the most bonkers plots in the entire run.

Like how do you have a panel of Kon and Clark mourning Pa Kent (who they think is dead) in the middle of a story where the remainder of it is a bonkers dream sequence? Oh Kelly.

Didio and Palmiotti as a team - look I don’t think any of this run is good. It’s certainly got some of the worst of Kon overlooking the interiority of the women around him. It does hit the ‘exploited minor’ point again, but in a way that felt less aware by the writing team? It was far more ‘time to grow up’ exploitation rather than the clear celebrity manipulation Kesel wrote or the ownership CADMUS displayed.

Overall? Superboy is a run that made me think. It’s a run you can’t just take at surface level as there’s often a deeper thread running under what’s been written. It did some striking things with particularly Roxy Leech and Serling Roquette over the years, much of which is underappreciated.

It’s quite often not a comfortable read. But it is a fascinating one (and should be given a more deep look by some fans).

Tang going to work in geoponics like she told Cal she would during the pixie bean event , except now its a week later and she's at an emotional low and her hair is a knotted mess all of the smells, and sounds of geoponics are overwhelming her but she doesn't wanna just give up because she should be able to ignore her feelings like an adult already, and she doesn't want to ask for help because she's not a little girl who needs help anymore, but one of the adults who works in geoponics told her that she can't go work in the fields with her hair loose and it needs to be in a bun or in a tight braid she can tuck away, and she's been sitting at the entrance to one of the domes for like 20 minutes trying not to have a breakdown when Sol shows up. Cue Sol knowing how to help without forcing Tang to accept it or make her like a little kid (even if the genuine and gentle affection that respects her boundries makes her cry a little bit, not that she wants to tell Sol that & they won't push)

Dys and Nomi getting back from an expedition pretty early in their friendship and Nomi's parents having been waiting for them at the depot and oh they are SO excited to see their Nomi Nomi making friends, they were worried that there weren't going to be other kids their age working out in the jungle, because it's so scary and dangerous out there and all that, and wow son you look like a bundle of twigs whens the last time you had a good family meal :) ? And Dys gets pulled into a family dinner at Nomi's before the stun debuff can even wear off. [Tentatively named "Loving Home"]

Teenage Utopia having a Teenager moment on the Stratospheric a bit before her 14th birthday / around Sol's first birthday, where she's upset about [something to mirror the pixie bean stuff that Sol later goes through but like the spin the bottle part not alien bean drugs] because theres so many things (read: kissing and dating) she can't do or take part of because the next youngest Earthborne kid is already 18 and the oldest Shipborne kid is barely 10 - But, luckily, counciler Besk is here just for moments like these! And as always, she knows just what to say and when she just needs to listen, and it really does help Utopia feel better. Thanks stars for that, what would they do without counciler Besk??? [Tentatively named "Special Age"]

Early 20s Cal and Marz watching some romantic couple their age doing something romantic and Cal mentioning Tammy and Marz just turning to him and going "She's been gone a decade Cal, obsessing over your theoretical relationship with a dead 11 year old is getting a little creepy. Like. Seek help. You're 24. " which. Cal does not take gracefully. [Tentatively named "Seek Help"]

A bunch of the planetborne kids keep following Dys around and he asks Tammy about it, and she has to explain to him that he's like catnip to the average 4 year old in the way that batman or dinosaurs are (can't get scared of anything, goes outside and has adventures all day, gets to explore ancient ruins and see all sorts of cool scary aliens, doesn't have follow the rules or listen to anybody). [Tentatively named "Newfound Popularity"]

Anemone coming to dinner at Anne's place in the first time in ages after her mother keeps bothering her about it, and she arrives a little bit earlier than expected and catches the triplets at the end of some sort of argument that she can't hear before its over. Things stay calm for a little bit and Nem keeps being surprised at how much her brothers have grown while shes been focused on the garrison, often not knowing what their hobbies or interests are now, especially prominant with Nimbus as the youngest. It all culminates in the triplets earlier fight coming to the forefront again, at the heart of it being each one of them coping with the loss of Kom and the colony's situation in a very different way and their relationships with eachother deteriorating because of it, all while Anne tries to get them to keep it together so Nem comes back again, and while Nimbus doesn't seem to super react to it and instead keeps trying to get Anemone's attention while he can. [Tentatively named "Family Dinner"]

I might add on to this list later, because it is Not all of the ideas I have, and none of these are ones delving into other chains of timelines or other aus (of which I have... too many concepts...)

My least fav is obviously Vace. I don't think I need to elaborate but to make it clear l, I haven't ever tried to befriend him so I don't know much about him other than his obsession with killing things, being abusive and a bully.

Next I'll have to put Nomi Nomi not because I don't like them but simply because I've never went out of my way to befriend them so I don't really have an opinion.

Cal was my best friend in my first play through so it hurts me to put him so low but he deserves it. Listen mate I love animals as much as the average gal but you're doing too much. The victim blaming as well?? I'm sorry that I was born on a spaceship set to colonize an alien planet, what did you want me to do? Swim through space and go back to earth? Also your girlfriend's dad died a horrid death and that's still all you have to say? Pacifism isn't a good look on an environment like this one.

Rex is a great dude, there's nothing I dislike about him, he's just simply not as interesting as the others.

Tammy is also kind of on the same boat. I did have a lot of hearts with her on my second play through and helping her be more confident was a very enjoyable journey, she is obviously very kind and empathetic and that makes her incredibly likable. I wish she had some flaws to make a bit more realistic.

This is where things get tough because all the next characters are kinda close but Nem will have to take this one. I romanced her in my most recent play through and she really is just the cutest... until Kom dies and she adopts the whole Helio package. She did become slightly annoying even though I understand her trauma. It's good that you can help her grow out of it, that gives her bonus points. A fun character with some nice character development.

And here comes everyone's fav boy Dys. It took a lot of trying to befriend him, he made it very hard for me and I liked that. I liked how they made him weird and antisocial, he wasn't the misunderstood boy that no one likes but rather it's actually the opposite. His relationship with Tang is so beautifully complex I love every part of it although I still haven't gotten them to reconcile (that damn bar will be the death of me). I would have put him much lower if it wasn't for the exploration buddies relationship that he had with Sol because the most unlikable thing about him (that I honestly never understood) is his obsession with the gardeners. Maybe it's my lack of understanding or the fact that I never really went down that road (making him a gardener/befriending Sym) because it creeps me out but I just don't like his views on the subject. And also I hate his relationship with Sym, nothing cute about a 100+ yo alien praying on a 16 yo boy.

Marz is a character that I thought I was going to hate straight from my first play through. She seemed like the typical mean girl character, who's very pretty has a lot of money is obsessed with clothes and stuff and also bullies every one just because but she's not exactly like that. Sure she has kudos and status and loves her fashion but she has genuinely kind intentions behind her "bullying". She doesn't understand how words can hurt because due to her augument they can't hurt her, she thinks she's helping Dys fit in with her comments and she doesn't want him to be lonely. She's naturally a very commanding person and a true leader but she isn't looking for mindless sheep, she wants you to have self respect and a backbone and I love her for that. Also bonus points to our girl for helping us overthrow the government. I have to say though, all the above doesn't excuse the fact that she can be seriously mean sometimes, but we love her regardless.

My favourite girl, my sweet baby Tangent, who's gone through so much but no matter what you do she doesn't really get a happy ending. I had my eye on her the moment I saw her (her child sprite reminded me of Ino from Naruto that's why) and she was my first romance. Obviously that didn't end well cause my first ending turned out to be tangent's cure (I thought I was just helping my gf bro) and now I'm scared to even talk to her thinking I'll trigger it again but I love her non the less. She's such a complex character I could talk about her for days (special thanks to the person with the multiple tangent discussion posts) her relationship with Dys, the obviously toxic and abusive relationship with Instance, her importance to a whole colony at such a young age, the fact that she's held to adult standards which results in self harming habits and her loneliness, her struggle with mental illness and the death of her mother. I'm writing everything down in a synopsis pretty much because if I start I won't stop. I also love how this abusive relationship was handled compared to Nem and Vace. No matter what you say she won't see how bad Instance is for her and the product of all this abuse is ultimately horrible for her. It adds a realism that hurts to death but is necessary. I also adore her character because it gives us a reminder that not everyone gets a happy ending in life, sometimes the things people go through never really leave them, although admittedly I would kill to see my baby happy, she deserves it.
