309 - Jeffrey (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
We're back again with another episode chosen by one of our sponsor-tier subscribers from Patreon, this time with a bit of 1990s gay cinema! Thank you Lance for bringing us all to 1995's Jeffrey! Adapted from Paul Rudnick's Off-Broadway smash play, the concept of an "AIDS comedy" made it difficult to get produced, but ultimately unique once it reached theatre audiences. Despite playing to a limited audience on film and taking a broad comedic approach to the culture surrounding gay life in the 1990s, Patrick Stewart's performance as an interior designer diagnosed with AIDS earned some bit of buzz.
This episode, we talk about the career of Paul Rudnick and the types of gay cinema that emerged in this moment of American independent filmmaking. We also talk about Stewart's surprising lack of awards history, Bryan Batt's performance as Stewart's lover, and Christine Baranski hosting a "hoedown for AIDS."
Topics also include TikTok smash videos, "start my orange for me," and Debra Monk talking gay stuff.

Decoding Screw Labels
example:  12-24 X 7/8 Hex Washer Head Self Drilling #3 Drill Bit
12 – Represents the thickness of the shank. Think dress size. The bigger the number, the thicker the shank.
24 – Represents the number TPI, or the number of threads per inch. The higher the number, the finer the threads, which are best used in metal applications. The fewer the threads per inch, the coarser the threads, the faster the screw will drive and are the preferred threading for wood applications or wood studs.
7/8 – measurement from underneath the head to the tip of the screw. In the case of flat headed screws, the length is measured from the top of the screw to the point.
#3 Drill Bit – Drill bit tips range from #2 to #5. They do not represent the size of the hole that they will drill but do represent the thickness of metal they will drive through. Source: All Points Fasteners by MaryLouise Eckman, Head Screw Lady Since 1986

'Infinite Life' by Annie Baker, a Review
'Infinite Life' by Annie Baker is provocative and profound.
(L to R): Kristine Nielsen, Brenda Pressley, Marylouise Burke, Mia Katigbak in Infinite Life (Ahron R. Foster The premise of award-winning Annie Baker’s play Infinite Life, premiering off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater, is that pain is the crux of life. Directed by James Macdonald, the production focuses on individuals who deal with pain along a continuum from…

Infinite Life at Altantic Theater
Did they kiss?
No. Sofi (Kirk) and Nelson (Simpson) did not kiss, although there was a proposal of kissing that was not taken up on because Sofi likes to get to the airport really early. However, there were some dirty messages left and some very specific declarations of characters' desires. The other characters did not appear to be romantically or sexually interested in each other, although one could argue the ladies shared an intimacy of a different kind.
Should they have?
No, it was good that they didn't kiss. The relationship between Sofi and Nelson is not about personal connection and more a way to explore desire, and at least for Sofi, desire is a way that she attempts to have some control over a body that feels like it controls her, to give pleasure to a body that is filled with pain. So for her to have control in the last moments of the play to say no to the proposed tete-a-tete, as tempted as she was, felt important to witness. Also, it really is so important to get to the airport early. Sofi does ask for and recieve a picture of Nelson's colonoscopy which, weirdly, did feel like a consumation of their "relationship".
The most intimate moment in the play was when Sofi lifted Eileen's (Burke) legs to give Eileen a moment free from pain. That was very tender, sweet, and simple, like the best kisses are.
Infinite Life written by Annie Baker directed by James Macdonald produced by the Atlantic Theater and the National Theatre (UK) starring Marylouise Burke, Mia Katigbak, Christina Kirk, Kristine Nielsen, Brenda Pressley, Pete Simpson Infinite Life runs at the Linda Gross Theater from August 18 – October 8, 2023. The show runs 1hr 45min.

today's biology department random loot drop: there were a bunch of readers digest condensed books/select editions (same thing different name depending on era but they are 4 books that have been abridged) and I grabbed two with the most interesting sounding books to me...
first one is:
icon by Frederick Forsyth
the runaway jury by john grisham
capitol offense by Barbara Mikulski & marylouise oates
critical judgment by Michael Palmer
second one is:
the simple truth by David Baldacci
rainbow six by Tom clancy
cloud nine by Luanne rice
the cat who saw stars by Lilian Jackson Braun
I know nothing about these authors or books and they were published in the late 90s so we will see how that goes lol

i'm sad about elena being gone and the fact that she and bonnie won't be happy and alive at the same time again (jfc) but. i liked how emotional her individual goodbyes were with everybody and also the fact that bonnie and caroline will get more screentime lol, and that the door will open to bamon/steroline and give them moments to POP.
but also she ENCOURAGED DAMON TO DATE Y'ALL (according to stefan -- also she literally gave her boyfriend permission to date if he wanted to so idk what y'all were saying about her being needy/selfish and taking up too much of damon's attention and not being supportive of bamon because bitch where??) so anyways 1) delena's an open relationship i guess 2) this is the perfect opportunity for denzo/bamon to thrive
everyone form a prayer circle y'all
