LOL it's basically hypmic if they were marylanders instead, with each county as a division

buster bros - prince george's county (if you know anything about maryland you know why this is) mad trigger crew - baltimore (the city, not the county. homicide capital of maryland and formerly of america) fling posse - anne arundel county (for the casino and the mall) matenrou - howard county (middle class core) bad ass temple - montgomery county (large buddhist population, high median household income, many lawyers) dotsuitare hompo - frederick county (this took me a bit but i do think sasara would perform at shipgarten, which i know is not in frederick but it's not that far lol. vivziepop is from here and i think that warrants it being clown county)

these are all in central maryland because if you look at the hypmic map, all the divisions are in the tokyo area or other major urban centers. all of maryland's major urban centers are in the center; there's not a lot of people in the mountains or by the beach (and I don't see any divisions being in ocean city).

chuohku would be DC of course. the hypmic rice farm would instead be a hypmic corn farm and it would be in howard county. this is all for jokes and it started because of my headcanon that rio would buy this ugly ass old bay shirt for samatoki on a trip to the US

this would drastically affect hypmic due to the fact that the culture of the divisions is significant in how the characters are, so if you want to see what "baltimore samatoki" entails, i am willing to divulge more details!

1. How'd Kota and J meet initially? How long have they been friends at the point at which the story starts?

2. What made you decide to set the story in Florida?

5. What's J's family like? How do they, and J's friends, take the news when J and Beck leave for Maine?

SILAS hi!!! thank you for the questions, you always have such thoughtful stuff to say and i really appreciate it :-)

How'd Kota and J meet initially? How long have they been best friends at the point at which the story starts? Kota and J met and became besties online -- they both existed in similar spheres of (musical) theatre fandom. They've been best friends since around 14, and they're both around 20 or 21 during the actual story, so around 6 or 7 years of friendship. However, most of that was online friendship (Kota grew up in FL, and J grew up in MD). They both applied to and got into USF, and since neither of them were particularly attached to any of the other colleges they got into, they decided "fuck it, let's just go to USF together".

What made me decide to set the story in Florida? The main factor was that I had been listening to a Lot of Mountain Goats songs set in FL when i was working on GTM (the Alphonse mambo, lots of Tallahassee songs. Alibi isn't technically set in FL but it has the energy of a FL night so it counts in my head). I had also gone on vacation to there a few months beforehand, so it was kind of just fresh on my mind.

What's Beck's partner like (the one he's cheating on with J)? How long have they been in a relationship before J and Beck meet? Beck's partner is like. she Should Be perfectly fine. Also an academic type, similar tastes in media to Beck, etc. They've been together for a while... probably something like 7ish years? It's just like... in the years they've been together, they've started changing in a way that's like. uh, you know that feeling when you're on tumblr and you see a blog. and they Should be like, everything you want in a mutual/someone you follow. but the vibes are Slightly Off. or their tastes/takes on media you both like are just different enough from yours in a way that's almost abrasive. beck and his partner are kind of like, they've started moving towards that kind of direction. not enough to Really Notice, just enough for things to be a bit uncomfortably off at times. enough for you to be like "i want to change things, but we've had a good thing going for so long and i don't wanna fuck things up". but like, overall they still have a good relationship. Also, despite their partner being literally totally fine, Beck is like... Bored.

What's the fallout like after they leave for Maine? Hmmmmmm. In a universe where they make it to Maine successfully, the biggest fallout is that both J+Beck lose most or all of their support systems. Kota+Cade start to distance themselves from J. J starts keeping a distance from their family (generally, most parents are not a fan of hearing their 20 year old say "I dropped most things in my life and moved to Maine with a man twice my age"). Beck distances himself from his social circle (the ones who don't know/aren't close with his partner)/loses them (the ones who do know his partner/their mutual social circle) after they find out about the affair. In a universe where they make it to Maine, but with some hitches (ie, people find out that Beck didn't just skip town because of an affair, but because of an affair with a *student*), there's obviously the whole aspect of: Beck is Not getting another job at a university again. On J's end, they would probably be even more distant with their family than they are in the above paragraph.

What's J's family like? How do they take the news when J and Beck leave for Maine? J actually has a relatively good relationship with their family? So they are like. they don't break contact with J over them leaving with Beck, but they are like "Sweetie... you know that this is really fucking stupid and you shouldn't be doing this?". The whole Beck thing for sure puts a strain on their relationship.

How and when did J get into skateboarding? J did Not have friends in high school, so their first year at USF they (+Kota) were like. We are going to join CAMPUS CLUBS! We are going to DO THINGS! We are going to MAKE IRL FRIENDS! And the thing they ended up doing was joining the campus skate club (it seemed cool, so why not?), and skating just became a thing for the both of them that stuck.

Do J and Beck ever make it to Maine? Functionally, not really. Partially because GTM is my little fucked up college romance novel space to play in, partially because i'm bad at endings, and partially because I think it's more fun if you, the reader, have to decide for yourself what happens. I dunno. J+Beck are constantly flickering between GETTING OFF SCOTT FREE TO MAINE, GETTING FOUND OUT, and STAYING IN AFFAIR LIMBO FOREVER.
