❛ hey there, tiger ... ❜ mary jane can admit that she doesn't like visiting the cemetery. it's selfish, she knows. it's arrogant of her — when the cemetery is only the place where the dead is meant to rest peacefully and nothing more, and yet. the grievance and hurt it symbolises is too much; she's already got enough of that growing up. mary jane does not need any more. she doesn't know what it says about her that she is here, despite this preference of disliking the area, standing next to peter.

she wants it so badly to be love, but she can't be cruel, or assuming. in front of gwen stacy's name staring right back at her, mary jane just feels awful. wanton. shameful.

how can she think of love when peter's eyes are still red from remembering gwen ?

as usual, he's amazing.

with just a quip about the idea of him being on her laps, he's already got her grinning wide—and gosh, mary jane loves every person in her assemble, but she could not be even more gladder than to temporarily get herself and peter away from the stuffy, clearly-unequipped-for-large-groups booth they got saddled with. which makes her totally wonder why they couldn't go to glittery diamond two blocks down with just as exciting of an atmosphere as this.

well, whatever. it isn't like it was mary jane who's in charge of it, and she supposes the point of it all is to let loose. peter catches her attention though, offering to buy, and mary jane feels silly—she hasn't drank since she decided to stay sober at nineteen unless she wanted to end up like dad ( or her mama )—but simply having him here makes mary jane feel all warm and tingly. drunk, even. she beams, open and wide and earnest, towards him before she relays her order towards the bartender. ❛ just a shirley temple, please. ❜

❛ i think that's a yes for dancing ! ❜ she laughs, already abuzz with the possibility of standing close and dancing with peter. this can't actually be happening, can it ? ❛ and as for claire—just ignore her. she, like, totally thinks i want to steal her boyfriend, which i don't. i don't even know who he is. ❜

His arm rests around Mary Jane's waist, holding her close as he looks around the group before back to his friend. "It's okay. I'm the one who should be sorry for not letting you sit down first. Then I could've been the one to sit on your lap." He laughs softly, nudging her playfully before following her gaze towards the bar. Nodding, he waits for her to stand before following.

Once they're out of earshot of the group, he leans against the bar, looking over at MJ. "They all seem really nice. But I gotta say, please don't let Claire sit on my lap. She seems kinda intense." He laughs before turning to the bartender, ordering himself a cocktail before looking to MJ again. "What would you like? On me, as a congratulations for your show." He smiles softly as he rummages in his pocket for his wallet, pulling it out and tapping it against the bar. Part of him always feels guilty for drinking. He feels like he constantly has to be alert and on call in case something goes wrong in the city. Then again, he's also aware that that's not a feasible lifestyle. Plus, he keeps thinking back to May and how she'd been insistent on him living his life. "So, where do we stand on dancing? Cause get a couple more drinks into me and I might want to shake these hips."

❛ ay, cariño. ❜ doesn't he understand it by now ? mary jane will always worry. she'd like to think maybe that it's in the job description of being peter parker's best friend, but she wouldn't say that aloud. mary jane may be a bit too... forward sometimes. or enthusiastic.

but she cannot be clumsy enough to try and boldly claim the spaces where gwen stacy and harry obsborn may have before sat. though... it wasn't that she knew much of them. what she knew, she learned from aunt may. and even then, aunt may did not tell her much.

but that's okay. mary jane isn't very good with patience — for peter though ? she wants to try.

Peter isn’t sure he’s okay, but he’s never sure he’s okay nowadays, anyway. Of course, he starts being Spider-Man again because New York City needs him, and ihe feels like it’s his responsibility to keep fighting, but his heart feels EMPTY. It’s been this way since Gwen died. He’ll never forgive himself for what happened to her.

He smiles at MJ, though, because she’s always so nice to him. She’s so caring. He wishes he could be a better friend than this, but he’s Spider-Man. His life could never be normal, and he doesn’t even want to try anymore.

“I am, don’t worry about me,” he assures before he shakes his head. “I guess I’m a bit tired, but I’m fine.”

This was the context of almost every fight they had, and MJ usually started it. MJ was never angry at him. It was pure fear that, one day, he wouldn't walk through the front door. Each time he left it could be the last time. His painful wince caused her to loosen her grip. "I'm sorry. Didn't mean to hurt you." Thumbs rubbed his cheekbones gently before pushing herself flush against him. A sigh slipped past her lips at the feeling of his hands brushing her shirt up. The way he lifted her up was so effortless, so gentle. His movements brought a gasp from her. MJ clung tighter to him with her hands running through his hair. "Absolutely not," she breathed out, but a smile still played on her lips. As her breath returned to her lungs, she searched his face for any damage. "I shouldn't do this. It might encourage you." MJ made no effort to peel herself away from him. Lips pressed to his nose and then his forehead. "Need me to patch you up? I'll draw us a bath."

she's sure it's just fear.

a few hours ago there has been an attack, once again, in new york city. part of an old building — a bank and its offices above, which holds about twelve floors altogether — were ruined by an explosion. whether it's been a robbery or purely an attack is yet to be determined. seven people have been captured so far, the ring leader not one of them; while two deaths have been confirmed, and twelve people sustaining major injuries. it's been all over the news. mary jane had been in the building.

she couldn't have anticipated it, of course. how could she have known ? she was just there to settle some issues about dad's account at his request, that's all, when part of the building bursts. she remembers a ringing sensation, screams ( which sounded distant in the beginning ) before a hand pulling her desperately to her feet. an old woman mary jane had just assisted with her things a few minutes ago, was then crying for her to move. the very fact she'd managed to escape unscathed was pure dumb luck. if it hadn't been for the urgency of others, she may have just laid there, wondering what had happened.

all in all, mary jane merely has scratches; mainly from the fall she didn't manage to brace from. nothing anyone should honestly worry about. she tries to tell peter as much, when she had sneaked into the parkers' home to recuperate in his bedroom, waiting — for some reason — for his eventual return. and then, of course, just as she expects him to, he arrives. for a moment, all they do is stare at one another, as if taking the moment to truly reassess that the other's blissfully and undoubtedly alive, before mary jane's mouth breaks into a watery grin, mouth open in its attempt to reassure and greet, and peter—

peter marches forward. peter kisses her.

there is nothing sweet about the kiss. nothing patient or slow. nothing like the happily-ever-after-sort-of-kiss mary jane will always secretly yearn for. the kiss is forceful, all teeth, the kind she learns the art of when she was just fourteen, and her first boyfriend had only liked her because she was always available for him. mary jane supposes she is also always available for peter; maybe this is why he kisses her, the fear aside.

it hurts, but it doesn't. or maybe it hurts, to always end up being the girl who will be used, but mary jane is convincing herself it isn't, that this can be an advantage, so she kisses back, one hand fisting into his shirt, the other pulling him in and in and in until all his breaths are hers. isn't this what she wanted ? something inside of her tries to argue when doubt creeps in, demands she pushes away, that they both deserve something sweeter, kinder. she doesn't listen to it, of course. she moans instead at a particular bite, tilting her head to one side to reveal her neck for his taking. mary jane works to push at any article of clothes on his body away.

she knows this routine. she has been here before.

she takes him to his bed.
