Movie Review (2014)

I had originally seen this movie in a theatre (!!) when it first came out (seriously can't believe that was TEN years ago!), and since then usually caught bits and pieces here and there whenever it was on TV. It wasn’t until last weekend that I had actually taken the time to watch it in its entirety again for the first time in a LONG time. 

Watching this movie again got me digging back into my movie review archive. I have been known to have opinions that have evolved through multiple rewatches of things, so I get curious to see what I had initially written about them. But I was kind of surprised (and confused, honestly) that I had actually never posted anything about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - which is really weird because I swear I remember writing about it.

Anyway here is my super belated review because better late than never, right?

I guess I will start out with my overall thoughts, which also happen to mostly be the things I didn’t like.

First off, the story as a whole felt chaotic. They went a bit overkill with the villains and there was just too many concurrent storylines going at once, which resulted in less-than satisfactory payoffs for each of them individually. From the beginning, Electro seemed like main villain of the movie, yet his story seemed to end abruptly to make room for the conclusion of The Green Goblin.  Meanwhile Harry seemed to have a slow buildup throughout the film and then suddenly became a big deal villain only towards the end. And then there was Rhino who popped up here and there. I thought that they should have kept the focus of this sequel on Electro (see 'random tidbits' below), while also introducing Harry Osborne and building a foundation to establish that he was indeed one of Peter's 'best friends'. And then they could have devoted the next installment to The Green Goblin’s villain arc. However of course, now in retrospect we know that there never ended up being a part 3, so maybe it was a case of just trying to cram as much as possible into this one.

Okay, now for the things I liked. 

Something I noticed and appreciated more during this rewatch was the relationship between Peter and Aunt May. I really liked that there was a more noticeable mother-son dynamic in this film, and that you could see from the things she did (working hard to put herself through nursing school so that she could support Peter) and said (“You’re my boy”) that showed how much she loved him like a son despite not being his actual mother. I also loved (LOVED) any and all scenes with Peter/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy. I know that Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were dating at the time, which I suppose helps… but they had such amazing chemistry that was really apparent on screen and made me so invested in them as a couple. I don’t have a lot - if any? - of celebrity couples that I ‘ship’ (do people still say that??)  but they were seriously SO freaken cute, I love(d) them sososo much (RIP StoneField!! ☹).  And while I hated the fact that Gwen had to die in this movie, I do think that her death scene was so tragically and (cinematically) beautifully done at the same time.

Other random thoughts:

I had forgotten that BJ Novak was in this movie.

Why was Gwen applying for scholarships and being accepted into college after graduation?

I can’t tell if Aunt May knew or suspected that Peter was in fact Spider-Man. It seemed as though she was heavily hinting that she knew his secret at times, however I know in comicbook-land, characters are often surprisingly oblivious to the obvious (eg. Lois Lane not knowing that Clark Kent was Superman for the longest time).

Random tidbits I found out on the internet while Googling during commercial breaks:

The international title for the movie was The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro, which makes me think that the original intent was that he would be the main villain of the movie. (source)

When Gwen Stacy passed away in this movie, the time on the clock tower struck 1:21. This is in reference to issue #121 from The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series entitled "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" (also known as "The Green Goblin's Last Stand"). (source)

Andrew Garfield avoided Emma Stone for a week to prepare for Gwen's death scene. He is ~so~ method. (source)

Final Thoughts:

The reason for this revisit and belated movie review are due to the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man movies were on TV last weekend and I had unintentionally gotten sucked into watching them. Both of them. In their entirety. Commercials and all. I don't know why I did this, especially considering I have access to both of these movies on iTunes – commercial free.

I had re-read my original review of the first Amazing Spider-Man movie, and it mostly holds up - I still love that movie. However this second movie was just alright. It had its moments, but overall - especially plotwise - it was sub-par to the original. 

But you know what? Even though I had spent a crazy amount of time watching the with-commercial versions of these films, I don't regret it. It was fun. It made me feel happy and nostalgic :)

Synopsis: This is the city of New York 30 years later. The future is looking bleaker by the second, and it appears that New York is now an independent state, and although no 'super crime' has happened in over a decade, the government employs fascist methods to combat regular crime by using a new form of police, the merciless "Reign".

An old J. Jonah Jameson is giving out illegal copies of The Daily Bugle, shouting about how "The Spider" has returned. A news show the DBN (Daily Bugle News) covers a story of a crazy man (J. Jonah Jameson) who was giving out illegal newspapers and was rushed away by a group of children.

Two heavily guarded people burst through a closed door talking about an old "codger" (Spider-Man/Peter Parker) who took out two armed R.E.I.G.N. officers. Saks (one of the men), the other seems to be the leader of New York, wishes to accelerate the WEBB project, releasing it tonight, and catch Spider-Man. They go down to the Vault. Saks declares that "With great responsibility comes great… Power" Once in the Vault they find six people who volunteered to catch Spider-Man. They are called the Sinner Six, and are all fitted with micro-thermal explosives if they turn against their jobs.

A girl is reading a newspaper and two R.E.I.G.N. officers come up and take it from her, telling her that it's contraband. She insults them and is asked by a boy to join her for a special meeting…

Back to Peter, getting ready to pack, yelling at his fantasy of Mary-Jane to help and to get ready to leave. He shaves his beard and cuts himself. Peter is stunned to see that the blade cut his face.

Back to the girl who is going down a dark alley to an abandoned church. She hears the preaching of a man from inside. Going in she sees J. Jonah Jameson with a congregation of children. He orders a boy named Kasey to hack into the DBN network.

All over New York all mechanical video screens are disrupted and J. Jonah Jameson's announcement comes though, telling of Spider-Man coming to save everyone from oppression.

People start congregating out in the streets to hear the message and R.E.I.G.N. police come and start to break up the crowds. A man named the Hypno-Hustler comes and makes the R.E.I.G.N. officers dance. unfortunately his batteries die out and he is shot, J. Jonah Jameson makes all of his "children" watch the killing.

Out of his window Peter sees Hypno-Hustler being killed and the other officers launching a missile at his apartment. With the explosion Peter emerges in full Black Spider-Man regalia.

Attacking the R.E.I.G.N. guards, telling jokes and insulting them as he goes. J. Jonah Jameson makes sure that the hacked network is transmitting the fight to everyone in New York. Jonah is attacked by an officer and rising up the citizens attack the officer.

Kasey is then impaled by Kraven The Hunter's machete, and Electro and the Sinister Six attack Spider-Man. Peter is severely beaten but is saved by the "Deus Ex Machina" Doctor Octopus. Peter is brought to MJ's grave as Doc Ock digs it up. The WEBB project is being activated tonight.

People who complained in 2012 that Andrew Garfield was too attractive to play Peter Parker probably didn’t read many Spidey comics before then coz Peter Parker’s canonically hot shit. Famous actress and supermodel MJ Watson?? Gwendolyn Stacy?? FELICIA HARDY A.K.A. BLACK CAT?? Literally characters who had no idea that Peter’s Spider-Man wanted to date him AS WELL AS characters who didn’t care much about the Peter Parker side of him. From practically every direction there’s somebody being like “yeah I used to have a crush on him.” like honestly. Yes Peter Parker’s a super intelligent person with a good heart who would literally die to help people, but he also literally married a supermodel.

Imagine while seeking revenge on Spider-Man, the Green Goblin finds something better: you, who broke his heart.

“Peter, when you said Spider-Man said no, you meant you. Said. No.”

You recognized Harry’s voice, as cracked as it sounded then. As you were about to catch up with Gwen, you stopped yards short of her and paused to make sense of the hovering spectacle between her and Peter. What was your ex-boyfriend wearing?

“...you were my friend and you betrayed me!”

“No, I was trying to protect you,” Peter said, and you realized he wasn’t going to be able to deescalate the situation.

“You don’t give people hope, you take it away. I’m going to take away yours.”

“No-”

“Gwen run!” you both called out, as Harry flew at her. Instead he caught you, who without thinking had put yourself between the Goblin and Gwen Stacy. This was a much better turn of events than your ex-boyfriend could have anticipated.

“______, you’re back in my arms again!” he cooed, before letting out a mad cackle. All you could do was stay still and light as he flew through the night, pursued by an increasingly desperate Spider-Man.

“Harry, stop this right now, this isn’t you, Harry! This- this is not you! Harry, put her down!”

“Harry,” you whispered. Causing his sick grin to untwist into a wistful smile.

“Harry, this is between you and me! You want to fight?! Fight me, let her go!”

Peter didn’t realize how deeply drawn into you his childhood friend was. How deep the Goblin had embedded you into his own heart. Whatever transpired on this clock tower, you chilled yourself thinking, the three of you could never go back to your old selves.

“You’re okay,” Harry breathed into your ear. Aloud, he said, “I am never letting her go again.”
