Writing choices and casting choices are two related but different beasts, but since you brought it up:

As a redhead myself, I don’t care if redheaded people are cast to play redheaded roles because I know we make up only 2% of the global population, and that’s before looking for the rarer blue- or green-eyed redheads like myself.

But I feel the actor should still be made to look like the character. Hair dye and contacts are a thing.

When they made the red-headed Little Orphan Anne black, they made the whole major cast black, so that wasn’t conspicuous. But if they’re making Ariel black, why not Prince Philip or (more importantly) her father Triton? Why replace just the redhead, this time? If diversity and black representation is so important that you need to replace anyone instead of making new characters or whole new stories, why stop short with the one redheaded character?

Peter Parker had two other potential girlfriends before Mary Jane Watson: Gwen Stacy and Felicia Hardy / Black Cat. I know he dated Kitty Pride / Shadow Cat in at least one comic line, and an apparently new American-Asian mutant who talked to animals in another. His girlfriend doesn’t have to be redheaded Mary Jane.

But Marvel already made Michelle Jones a completely different character from Mary Jane (not just race, but personality and interests), so it seems insulting to everyone that Spider-Man’s first black girlfriend doesn’t really have her own name. It seems to suggest that a black girlfriend can’t stand on her own as character without needing a piece of a white character. Whether you think this was meant to mock purists (“we’re stealing MJ’s name!”) or appease purists (“look, Peter Parker is still with an MJ, you can pretend it’s the same one!”), it’s unacceptably half-assed and half-hearted. It’s cowardice to not give her a unique name of her own.

The actor who will play Beast Boy in the Titans movie assured fans that Andrew Garfield is still going through the process that will turn him green. I’ve seen no assurances that the actress who plays Starfire will ever paint over her skin tone with Kori’andr’s Tamaranian orange, which makes the “the character’s not white, she’s an orange alien” defenses rather hollow.

And then there’s Supergirl’s Jimmy Olsen, the West family in the Flash cast, and Hawkgirl.

Seems to me like the old white people in Hollywood have never really forgotten the “Irish need not apply” attitudes of early America, inherited from the British attitude that the Irish weren’t “the right kind of white”. How many blue-eyed blondes are being palette-swapped?
