Until the Very End: Preparing to Fall

Everyone is gearing up for the 74th Hunger Games, a year that should be just like any other year. Lily just wants to get the games over with, even though there is no getting back to normal in District 11 for her. In the years since she's won, she's alienated herself from her sister and she's started fighting with her childhood friend. She feels like she's a few seconds away from screaming at any given time. It's James' first year being a mentor. It's only his third year since he won his own games, and he knows there's not much he can do to help whoever is picked as a tribute. Every one knows it. The job of mentor is just to keep you from putting distance between yourself and that games. He won, but with each passing year, it feels more and more like he lost. The Capital citizens love Sirius Black. He's from District 4, he's not one of them, but they are fascinated by him. He's all over billboards and he's invited to all the parties and events when he's in the Capital. If they're lucky, they can snag him for a date. Everything about his life looks so glamorous, and he hates all of it. All of their lives take a dramatic turn when Mary MacDonald throws a wrench into how the games always play out.

lowkey makes me sad sometimes because I feel like all the female fictional characters I love get wayyyy less love, recognition, fics/fanart than their male counterparts and it sucks!!

I’m victim of it too sometimes but like where is more love for the marauders girlies? Lucy Gray Baird? Johanna Mason? They’re all so iconic and all these fandoms don’t talk about it enough!!

I think a lot about Katniss and Peeta pos-mj looking out for each other.

Because they are both completely destroyed, but they both hate seeing their partner suffering. So they do what they can to stand up for the other.

Peeta still has trouble touching her, he still grinds his teeth when he feels her too close, but he can't see her sobbing without comforting her in his arms. He can't see her whimpering half awake in the middle of the night without holding her hands, he can't see her eyes shining for him to come closer and do nothing.

Katniss can't get out of bed, she can't eat, she can't even force herself to take a shower. But her heart breaks when she sees Peeta depressed. When he's not eating , she forces herself to get up and go into the forest. She cooks it and feeds him piece by piece into his mouth. She cleans him and changes his dirty clothes with new ones. Wipe his face with a wet cloth to remove the grime and help him brush his teeth.

They just don't fall apart because they have the other by their side.

The desire to keep their love alive and safe is what makes them get up and do it. Heal slowly, make life better. It's the desire to see Katniss smile again that makes Peeta tell jokes, it's the desire to see Peeta happy that makes Katniss soften.

They do for each other what they can not do for themselves.

pt 1 of limoreau hunger games drabbles. book 1.

jordan li always thought that the games were a joke — other than those who volunteered and the freaks in the capitol… who didn’t? it was the capitol’s way of showing the districts that they’re all at their mercy.

it was bullshit. life was bullshit. living in the seam was bullshit.

marie moreau wasn’t bullshit, though.

it took them too long to realize.

not when jordan was standing on the stage trembling in fear, looking to their left and seeing the girl standing just a few feet away. they turned to each other, shook hands to show their comeraderie.

not when they were together on the chariot, synthetic flames burning behind them as they made the best first impression any district 12 tribute ever could.

not when marie admitted to having loved a boy back home, who was stuck with them in the capitol. it left jordan angry — who did she think she was?

only when marie was knocking on death’s door in the arena. her leg sliced open from cato’s sword, sitting in the cave trying so hard to stay awake. only then did jordan realize how big their heart was for her. how they would risk being killed by clove’s throwing knives just to get medicine for her.

victory wasn’t as grand as the capitol made it out to be, but marie made it better. she kept them sane when the world felt like it was collapsing beneath their feet and the air was hard to breath.

they would spend the rest of their lives loving marie because for once, in this horrible life, they understood what it felt like to be loved and to love.

"the ballad of songbirds & snakes" is draining me & i'm only at the epigraph? | or, aka, Suzanne, you nearly had me.

“I thought of the promise of virtues which he had displayed on the opening of his existence, & the subsequent blight of all kindly feeling by the loathing & scorn which his protectors had manifested towards him.” — Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, 1818 The quote discusses the contrast between someone's initial positive qualities at the start of their character, & how those qualities were later overcast by the negating actions of those around them. (insert some already-popular theory about Snow's love for Lucy Gray becoming the inner world of why he tortured Everlark). THATS NOT WHAT GETS ME, HOWEVER. READ THE QUOTE AGAIN, STOPPING AT BLIGHT.

"...blight" as in desecration. Blight is the name of the District Seven Victor who Johanna Mason says, “Yeah, well, he wasn't much, but he was from home,” She nudges Beetee, who's barely conscious, with her shoe. “He got a knife in the back at the Cornucopia. And her—” (CF; chapter 22)

Blight: his name symbolises harsh challenge in D7's lumber industry. in true Suzanne Collins pattern, the name is deep. The direction implies hardened nature; necessitating physical strength & endurance to work in such an environment.

Johanna: her name's meaning exists within her characterisation & arc throughout the series. J. Mason is known for her sharp wit, cunning, & rebellious spirit, which contrasts with the traditional expectations associated with her district's lumber industry—stuck in the roots, steady.

naming Blight & Johanna may carry further meanings that reflect the characters' personalities, roles, or the broader themes in Catching Fire. Like the others, Blight's death, though it kept Katniss & Peeta alive, was unnecessary; considering Snow was to leave winners of Games alone—that was the promise

Allow me to quickly revisit the beginning of my post. In Mary Shelley's quote, "blight" metaphorically describes the destruction of positivity. Something that started with promise or goodness is overshadowed or ruined by influences or actions.

Botanically speaking, blight is a disease that causes causes withering, discoloration, & sometimes death in a large group of plants. Or entire forests. Blight is avoidable with proper gardening, but once affecting crops, it spreads. Yes, spread out the plants, but, care for your garden, check up on your plants, rotate crops, know the signs, set the healthiest foundation. (Snow isolated Victors from their districts, didnt care about their individual physical, emotional and mental health, only to throw 24 of them back into an arena where basic water was hard to find). The knowledge of lumber and trees barely helped Johanna and Blight stay alive. It was Beetee who reminded Jo that the arena's trees may've been fake &technologically engineered. In both contexts—botanical & metaphorical—blight signifies a process of decay . In plants, blight causes physical deterioration; in Shelley's novel, it's the moral as well as emotional deterioration of positive virtue.

The wording of blight in the epitaph evokes imagery in which, events and relationships start off flourishing (like virtues). Negative forces (such as loathing and scorn from others) eventually sabotage the events or relationships. A botanical lens reinforces the metaphor by providing a visual and concrete example of how things are effected by destructive force, whether it's a physical, natural diseases or emotional negativity. If you're not cautious, negativity will swallow you whole. Immediately like poison or slowly like fire.

"Mama, why are your ears like that?” asked the little girl, for the thousandth time. She gently ran my ear, pinching my missing earlobe with her little fingertips as she laid her head on my shoulder, almost falling asleep.

The little boy in my other arm was already sucking his thumb, sleeping peacefully.

I would run my hand through her hair and say to her. "The fire took it, Willy."

"Long before I was born?" she would ask and I would nod.

“long, long before..." I would say.

She would blink her eyes slowly, even though she was so tired, she would continue talking. She dabbed her tiny fingers along the rough scars on my neck. "Here too?" she asked.

“Yes, here too." I would say.

Her blue eyes would look at my scars curiously, she always made the same questions several times, as if she was trying to understand the facts, try to understand how something like this is possible... For a six years old girl, who didn't know anything worse than hurting her elbow.

“Did it hurt?"

“Yes."

Satisfied with the answer, Willow would fall asleep
