In a subplot to that episode, Carlos and Logan hunt for buried treasure with Patchy the Pirate, and due to SpongeBob establishing that Patchy and SpongeBob live within the same universe, It can be confirmed that SpongeBob is within the BTR Universe.

Big Time Rush - Big Time Cameo (Season 4, Episode 5)

Hardly anyone ever brings this up, mostly because they weren't in the age range of someone who watched both shows, but I was, so...

In a subplot, Logan and James meet some of the cast of Yo Gabba Gabba as they battle for some snacks. This establishes a link to a multi-crossover universe that Yo Gabba Gabba has, and I'll talk about it in a bit.

(the episode also establishes that Lucas Cruikshank, AKA the guy that played Fred, is a character within the Big Time Rush universe)

Marvin Marvin - Big Time Marvin (Season 1, Episode 19)

In this episode, Marvin (played by Lucas Cruikshank) goes to a Big Time Rush concert, but the Klerg had kidnapped the band and disguised themselves as BTR, Marvin then goes on adventure to save his sister as she was mistaken as a Klutonian, and also to save the real Big Time Rush. This establishes a connection between Marvin Marvin and Big Time Rush.

BIG TIME RUSH to HOW TO ROCK

How to Rock - How to Rock an Election (Season 1, Episode 6)

In the episode, Kacey (played by Cymphonique) is trying to run for class president, with a promise that Big Time Rush will perform if she wins. Surprisingly enough, Big Time Rush stops by during the election.

Now, hardly anybody remembers this show (I don't think anyone knew this show's existence), but I decided to include it because of the establishment of another Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe.

YO GABBA GABBA CROSSOVERS

YO GABBA GABBA to TRUE JACKSON, VP

True Jackson, VP - Mission Gone Bad/Trapped in Paris (Season 2, Episode 16)

This one, I haven't heard about, because I was sure a Yo Gabba Gabba fan when this came out, but I didn't really care for Nick's live action at the time if it weren't iCarly, so... Some of y'all can correct me in the response.

In this episode, the cast end up in a cathedral(?), and then they meet the cast of Yo Gabba Gabba, and they dance for a bit.

Now, I am very faint on the memory of this show (it's existence is basically Unfabulous for older and middle Gen Z), So all you True Jackson fans get me caught up with what happened.

YO GABBA GABBA to THE AQUABATS

Basic knowledge of the creator (Christian Jacobs)

So, Christian Jacobs is the creator of Yo Gabba Gabba and is also the voice of Plex (the yellow robot). Additionally, he serves as the lead singer of the rock band The Aquabats under the name The MC Bat Commander, so they occasionally cross over from time to time.

DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson) sometimes makes dates for the tours of The Aquabats, and The Aquabats have made appearances to play on Yo Gabba Gabba (The ones that come to mind are when they played Pool Party and the Counting to 5 song). This also opens a bigger universe that can be explained later.

YO GABBA GABBA to SOUTH PARK

South Park - Taming Strange (Season 17, Episode 5)

Now, this one is more of a parody than a flat-out crossover (mostly because Bill Hader is the one playing Plex, not Christian Jacobs), and I should probably not see it as a flat-out crossover, but the episode is funny to me, so I should just talk about it.

In the episode, Ike is given hormones made for Tom Brady instead of a laxative, and he ends up going through puberty. Then, Ike goes to a live Yo Gabba Gabba show in Denver, where he "tames Foofa's strange". As Plex, Muno, Brobee and Toodee scold Ike, they then talk to Foofa, who ends up turning into Bangerz-era Miley Cyrus.

Now you see why most people consider this episode a parody? However, this episode ruined Foofa for me, so that's why I'm counting it.

OTHER CROSSOVERS

THE AQUABATS to HOMESTAR RUNNER

The Aquabats! Super Show! - CobraMan! (Season 1, Episode 12), and The Wizard of Hollywood! (Saturday Morning!, Episode 1)

In the episode, CobraMan!, The Aquabats meet up with a carnival barker named Carl (who is basically almost Strong Bad except without the green eyes and gem), who steals The Aquabats BattleTram, and they battle CobraMan to get back their BattleTram.

Additionally, in the Saturday Morning series they did 4 years after The Hub Network show ended, Homestar and Strong Bad cameo as themselves in Aquabats costumes during a compilation.

Strong Bad also sung in the song "Pink Pants!" for The Aquabats "Hi-Five Soup!" album.

HOMESTAR RUNNER to BONUS STAGE

Bonus Stage - Morbid (Season 1, Episode 9)

In the episode, Phil and Elly intentionally kill themselves by flying into the sun to get to hell, where Joel is, as Satan forces Joel to watch nothing but Time Squad every day, all day.

In hell, Phil and Elly meet Strong Bad, Homestar and Coach Z (who aren't voiced by Matt Chapman, but this is a webtoon, not a TV cartoon, which is why Robot Chicken isn't on this list), who explain why they are all in hell.

In the end, Phil is writing an email response (akin to Strong Bad Emails/sbemails), Strong Sad appears, stating that he likes Phil better than Strong Bad. Joel then kills everyone again by putting a fork in the microwave.

When Bonus Stage moved from Animated Diversions to Keenspot, these 2 scenes were replaced, but I still treat the original scenes as canon.

BONUS STAGE to RPG World

Bonus Stage - Accursed Meeting (Season 4, Episode 3)

In this crossover with another webtoon, Waterman, While Joel hangs out with the Waterman guys, Phil had decided to kidnap Hero and Cherry from Ian Jones-Quartey's webcomic "RPG World" (Who are also a little off-model) in one scene. Once again, enacting the rule of Webtoon crossovers, this is canon to both universes.

RPG World to OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes

OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes - A Hero's Fate (Season 1, Episode 34)

In this episode, K.O. wants to train better, so he travels with Hero (who looks closer to model than in his Bonus Stage appearance) to complete his quest. While all of this happens, Rad and Enid go to a kiddie pool or something.

Now, this I have to explain something. The Web-to-TV rule is only enforced if there is consent from both parties, unlike web-to-web. This means parody is out of the picture for TV. and understanding this knowledge, this establishes a connection between OK K.O.! and RPG World.

DEBATABLE CROSSOVERS

Now, you were probably expecting me to talk about Crossover Nexus (which establishes Teen Titans Go!, Steven Universe and Ben 10 as canon) or Nicktoons Unite (which establishes The Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom as canon). However, I see those things as either not canon (Nicktoons Unite, as later material retcons the games) or in different universes (Crossover Nexus).

CONCLUSION

It's funny knowing how expansive the Big Time Rush Universe is. It's so expansive, it jumped through multiple cable channels (Nickelodeon, Hub Network, Online, Cartoon Network). That is something the mainline Nickelodeon Universe can't say.

So, enjoy the knowledge that Phil Argus, Strong Bad, Gustavo Rocque, Squidward Tentacles and Enid Mettle all exist in the same universe.

I want to see an entire 11-hour Big Time Rush retrospective only because I want to see a 2 hour pinboard segment that is basically similar to what's above.

Unexpected

Chapter 13

Summary: After a Halloweenparty Y/N actually didn't want to got to, her life seems to be turned around. The reason is a very stubborn Supe that seems to have her in his visier. Is it just a coincidance or more?

Pairing: Soldier Boy/Ben x Reader

My Masterlist Series Masterlist

Something was tugging on Y/N's conscious, something that wanted her to wake up. Her mind was starting to fight against it, but no matter how hard she tried, it did not seem to work. No, she didn't wanna wake up in that miserable place again. If reality hit her one more time, that noone came to save her, that noone was even looking for her, she probably could not take it. But there was nothing she could do to stop it.

The first thing she felt was her body. It felt heavy and her muscles ached. But something was wrong with the position she seemed to be in. Had her chair tripped over?

Next was a weird beeping sound that got rapidly louder and louder. And when she finally opened her eyes she was greeted with a clean white ceiling and white walls. The disgusting smell was gone, too. She wanted to lift a hand but it did not quite work out and a low groan left her mouth.

"Y/N!" within seconds Annie's face was in her view and she looked relieved. "You're awake!"

"What..." she croaked, but her voice was not as strong as it used to be.

"You're in the hospital. You're going to get all better, girl."

Y/N was in the hospital? With a little panic she turned her head and took a look around the room. Now Marvin was also standing next to her bed and smiled softly down to her. She was hooked on a couple machines and an IV was hanging from her left arm. Taking in a couple of deep breaths Y/N waited for the blow, but nothing happened.

"Is... is this real?" she whispered and Annie's smile fell a little.

"It is." Marvin said. "But it was practically last second."

With that validation tears started to prick her eyes and she closed them for a moment. Relieve flooded her body and mind and she could not control the sobs that now shaked her body. So, her last memory that she thought was a halluzination had been real. She actually could not believe it. But then another thought came to mind.

"Where... where is Ben?"

Upon that question M.M. und Annie shared a quick look before the blonde supe answered.

"He's out on a misssion and won't be back for another week."

What? He was not even here? If that did not speak for itself. He was probably happy to be rid of her. Why would he care for her health anyway?

"How long... have I been... here?"

"Six days." A doctor was standing in the doorway, smiling gently. "Good morning, Ms Y/L/N. I'm doctor Henrickson."

He stepped in and closed the door behind him. With a quick glanze he checked her vitals before he gave Y/N a once over. A short nod signaled that he was satisfied with what he wrote down on his pad. He brought the small stool over that stood in the corner and sat himself down next to the bed. Annie went over to the other side to where Marvin was standing.

"You really scared us all here." the doc stared to break the ice.

"I did not... intend to do... that." Y/N rasped and coughed a little.

"Does your throat hurt a lot?" he asked with a little frown.

Y/N only nodded her head.

"We'll get you something for that. It will take some time, but in a couple of days it should be gone."

"What's happened... to me?" Y/N finally wanted to know.

"You were dehydrated. If you remember, you were locked in a room for days." How could Y/N not remember this. "This led to your body gradually starting to shut down. The lack of water put a heavy strain on your liver and it began to fail. And just as your friends described it to me, you also had hallucinations. Which is not surprising, since the brain also suffers and contracts, so to speak."

Okay, this was more than she imagined, but she realised early on that something was wrong with her. Her discomfort was clearly written on Y/N's face, because the doctor placed his hand reassuringly on her arm.

"But don't worry. We took care of you immediately and did everything necessary. You will have to stay here for a few more days. At least until your water balance is right again and your muscles have relaxed. And when the time comes, you'll be back to your old self. Promised."

And as doctor Henrickson smiled, Y/N let out a sigh. At least it was really over now. Everything was over now.

"But there is just one thing I need to ask you." and the doc's smile faded a little. "When we examined you we discovered numerous bruises on your body. But there were no signs of sexual assault."

Y/N's eyes widened a little and M.M. and Annie shared a quick look.

"Have you been in an accident beforehand? They looked to be older, some of them already fadeing."

"No, ehm... I was not."

"It's from her boyfriend." Annie replied and looked a little upset at Y/N.

"I don't know if I like that explanation better." the doc anserwered.

"He's a supe." Y/N said and now the man's eyes widened a little. "It took him some time... to control his strength. But... he never hurt me."

She never believed that she would be so embarassed about the markings Ben had put on her body. Some were accidental, others very calculated. And in the heat of the moment him talking about marking her up for everyone to see it made her just a bit more horny. But know she just wanted to disappear into a hole in the ground.

"Well, okay. That's not the first time I heard that." Doctor Henrickson said as he stood up and put the stool back into it's place. "I'm gonna leave you to rest now. And I think it would be better if your friends would do the same." he said with a pointed look at M.M. and Annie.

"We'll be back." Marvin said.

"And I'll bring you delicious food." Annie promised and squeezed Y/N's hand reassuringly.

After they left and she was alone in her room again, Y/N did a deep sigh and closed her eyes. But insight she was only wishing for Ben to visit her.

Five days later Y/N was feeling way better, but she was still not able to leave. Her blood work was still a little off and they didn't want to risk it. But that was fine with her. The longer she stayed the more she hoped for Ben to show up. It probably was silly of her, but her stupid heart did not want to give up on that possibility.

She did not know how long he was gone for that mission he was on and Annie did not show up in person again due to her own missions, but she keept in touch with her via messages. Marvin had come visit her a couple times more, bringing the food that Annie had promised, but he also did not say to much. Reasoning that she needed to rest and get her mind off of theses things for now.

And that was what she had done. Y/N had been so tired that she sleept most of the time and with her muscles more and more relaxing she could do so better and better. Only her dreams made the rest a little difficult at night. A mixture of scenes from that room she was held captive and her halluzinations and become the fuel that nightmares lived off and startled her awake more than once. But sometimes it was like she felt a warm hand on her cheek that calmed her and the wild pictures in her head down so much that she slept peacefully for the rest of the night.

She didn't even felt the need to watch TV, she just wanted to rest and hear from Ben. But as it seemed she could have only one of these two things.

Her mom and Caroline visited her multiple times and she knew that her Mom especially would lash out on her. Her worries in the beginning of the whole thing to be to dangerous just confirment with all this that happened to Y/N. And she understood her. After what happened to her sister, everything with Vought included was just dangerous. But in the end everyone was just glad and happy that she was alive and okay now.

Right now her mom was pushing her with a wheelchair through the hospital to get outside to the park and get some fresh air. Eventhough she did not really want to leave her room, she also felt like she could not lay in her bed anymore. To be able to feel the late november wind and a little bit of sun on her face sounded just so good, that Y/N could not say no to it. For her the wheelchair was unnessecary, but the doctor insisted on it.

When both women came out of the hospital they were greeted with crispy cold tempretures but it was definitly refreshing. There weren't a lot of people out with them and Y/N welcomed that. For the first time since the kidnapping she felt like she could breath freely. Her mom didn't say much, but the silence was not uncomfortable.

On the contrary, she loved hearing the sounds of nature. The birds chirping that stayed over winter, the wind whistling through the trees and leaves and also the cars driving back and forth. It helped her realize that she was truly free again and that the ordeal of her kidnapping was over. They stayed outside for at least thirty minutes before they headed back in.

"When will you be released?" Her mother asked while she was pushing the wheelchair back to the front of the hospital.

"Not sure. My blood values ​​are still not the best. And until that isn't top notch again, I have to stay here."

"Okay... because I was thinking... when you get released, don't you want to come back home for some time?"

Upon that question Y/N did not quite know what to answer. The idea sounded really nice. Getting back to full health in her old home, where she knew every centimeter and recognized every smell. Diving back into that comfort and safety was so tempting. But if she would agree to that, then she would minimize the chance for a certain supe to contact or see her again.

But before she could think about that more, she saw the television while passing through the waiting area. Some people were standing infront of it and she heared some pieces of their conversations. But that was not what got her frowning. It was the headline on the bottom of the screen. In big, bold letters she read: "One week after Homelanders death. What will happen now?"

Homelander was dead?

11 days ago...

"Finally we see eachother." Homelander said as he fully turned to Ben. "I've been looking for you, you know?" he grinned with a pointed finger into the other supe's direction.

"Mh-hm." the older one answered unimpressed. "You still not over the 'licking-my-ass' phase? Get a life, buddy."

People were screaming and running around. The children that had been in the school just mere minutes ago were all over the place, standing in groupes or alone, crying for their parents. Cars started to approach, worried parents behind the steeringwheel, picking up some of the kids and their friends before they flew the scene again. It was chaotic, but Ben tried to stay calm and keep Homelanders attention at himself.

"I did some digging! About you about me... my name is John, acutally." Homelander continued as he started to pace back and forth a little bit.

"And I don't fucking care." Ben said unaffected as he saw several black SUVs pulling up out of the corner of his eye.

John's grin faltered and his gaze turned a little angry. "How can you say that?"

Meanwhile, three helicopters were circling above their heads, broadcasting the highly dramatic and tense situation live. Ben did not see M.M. and his daughter anymore, hopeing somewhat that they already gotten away. But Ryan was still standing at the window looking down to both men.

"How can you say that? We're family!" Homelander argued and his breathing started to become heavier. "You, me and Ryan... we're charing the same DNA."

"Just because someone played fucking Contamination in real life with my DNA doesn't mean that we're family. And you raping a woman out of display of power over Butcher doesn't make Ryan your son. The poor fella probably still doesn't know about that."

Okay, Ben knew that he should be the last one to be blaming someone with that, 'cause he too did not hold back once. He did pretty shitty things, to say the least. But that was his old self. The Soldier Boy who thought that nothing could get to him, that he was truly untouchable. And eventhough he was invincible, his heart and soul were not. At least what was left of it.

"What?" both men could hear from above their heads, realizing that Ryan indeed heared what they had said to eachother.

Meanwhile, Marvin had brought Janine into the safety of his car. But his eyes were still on Soldier Boy and Homelander. Janine was trying to get into his car, but M.M. had not unlocked the door yet.

"Dad!" she screamed a little panicked. "Let's go!"

However, before he could answer they heard the honking of a car behind them and turned their heads. Monique stopped infront of them, hastly getting out of the car and calling out for her daughter. Janine did not need to think twice and ran straight to her mother, letting herself be embraced by her open arms that closed securely around her.

Both females were calling out for M.M. now and he was almost on his way to go over to them and get into the car as well, as he took one last look back to the supes. And when he saw that the already heated conversation now started to explode and become a physical one, he sighed heavily. Ben had saved his daughter. He owed him.

"This motherfucker..." he sweared and turned back to Monique and his daughter. "GO! Get her out of here!"

"DAD!" Janine screamed, but Marvin just smiled a little. "I'll see you later! I promise!" and then he ran to the back of his car and opened the trunk to get to his weapons.

Ben ducked at Homelander's first attempt to laser through his body, just to run towards him and land a punch his stomache. John took the blow in surprise and struggled to keep standing on his feet. In that moment of unwariness Ben saw a familiar face running towards him. It was Harlow who threw him a replica of his old shield that he caught with no problem. It was much lighter and the surface had a strange silver sheen to it. And it should not take long for him to realize why it was silvery like that.

As soon as Homelander was standing stabil again he used his laser eyes once more. Ben used his shield right away for his own protection and in the moment the laser hit it's surfsace, it threw it back, hitting the wall of the school and burning a bick rip into it. Well, that was new.

And while both men recovered from the surprise, sudden gunfire was opened on them. Not that it did any harm to both, but the ammunition was concetrated more on Homelander which disturbed him quite a bit. Ben observed his surroundings and saw not just his men that sprang into action, Mallory had sent some of her men too, starting to escort as many people as possible out of the danger zone. So, while Homelander tried to shield his face from the bullets hitting him, Ben again attacked him.

M.M. shot with his machine gun from behind the cars he was passing to get a better angle to hit Homelander and stay somewhat invisible. But then there was a black van that came to a stop right next to Marvin. He paused and locked with the backdoor of the van, ready to shoot if needed. But as the doors opened, surprise was showing on his face.

"Hello, mon ami!" greeted Frenchie M.M. with his charming smile.

Next to him was a big weapon that looked like a oversized bazuka merged with a grenate launcher. He petted it like it was his new favorite toy.

"What the fuck is that?" Marvin asked as he came over to the van and hid behind the open door.

"Just a little something Grace had me working on. It's a blaster that works like the old man's glowing chest. At least that's what I tried to do." Frenchie grinned. "You want to help me shoot that on Homelander to see if it works?"

He did not need to ask Marvin twice. But they needed to make sure that Soldier Boy was out of the firing line. So Marvin told him to get ready, picked up his machine gun again and made his way forward to where Johnson and Harlow were firing their guns.

That's when Ben saw M.M. still being there and helping him out with Homelander, while he held his 'son' on the ground with his shield over his face to avoid the laser. He could not hear what they were talking about and Homelander was starting to break free from Ben's hold, but it did not took long for Johnson to signalize him the plan. So with one last push down Ben jumped up from the body underneath, clearing the way for Frenchie and M.M..

They did not wait any second, Marvin pulled the trigger while Frenchie full on pointed at Homelander. The yellow glowing beam shot out of the weapon and hit him square in the chest. For a split second it looked like that nothing would happen, but then you could see how his suit started to break open and the beam began to burn his bare chest. John started to cry out his anger and shot his lasers all over the place.

Frenchie's weapon died down and Ben sprang back into action, trying to redirect the lasers away from the men that surrounded them. Unfortunatley one of the helicopters over their heads got hit from a red beam and instantly lost his tail boom. It crashed just mere meters away from the school building to the ground.

That little distraction was enough for Homelander to get back on his feet and pushing Ben out of the way. Having him crashing into the school and loosing his shield out of his hands. But Homelander's attention was no longer on Ben, he was now looking to the van on the other side of the street where Frenchie and M.M. were still standing with the blaster in their hands.

"C'mon, Frenchie! We need to shoot NOW!"

"I know, I kow! But it's not working!"

While both the men were arguing with eachother, Homelander started walking towards them.

"You think you can destroy me? ME?" His eyes started to glow red again. "I'm going to show you what I can do to you!"

But before he could even do anything, a red laser shot through his right arm, leaving an open gashing wound and making the arm immobile. He screamed in pain as he turned around to see who did that. But when he saw Ryan's eyes become normal again, he did not know what to say.

"You are not going to hurt them." the blonde boy says.

With his left hand over the wound John tried to steady his useless arm. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

"You lied to me." Ryan replied and his chest was heaving a little. "You raped my mom!"

"Don't tell me you believe what that bastard said. We are family, Ryan!"

"NO!" Ryan walked closer to his father, turning him away from the school. "My mom was my family. Butcher... and the others were my family."

Upon those words immense anger rushed over Homelanders face and he seemed determaned. "Oh, were they? To bad."

And within seconds Homelander shot his lasers towards M.M. and Frenchie. But just before they could hit them, Homelander screamed in pain again and fell to his knees. Ryan had used his lasers a second time on his legs. Once John had recovered from the impact he furiously started to shoot his own lasers against Ryan. But the boy jumped out of the field of fire in time.

"What's wrong? Now you don't have such a big mouth anymore, do you?" he spat out at his son and aimed again for him.

But as he realized that a yellow glow started to surround him, he opened his eyes wide and turned around to look behind him.

"He doesn't need to." Ben pressed out and one second later his chest glowed up in full power and vaporised Homelander so fast that he didn't get the chance to react anymore.

His body exploded in pink dust within a second and the silence that followed was deafening. But the reality was broadcasted live on tv.

Homelander was dead. Once and for all.

Alright. So. Character arcs.

A character arc is a character's personal journey within the context of the wider plot. It takes the concept for what a writer wants to do with a character and turns it into a story all on its own.

So, for example, Leon in RE2. The concept of his character is "a naive rookie police officer gets his blinders ripped off and is shown that the world isn't always so nice."

That's not the plot of RE2. It's just the plot of Leon's personal story -- it's his character arc. The arc takes him from the starting point "a naive rookie police officer" to the end point "shown that the world isn't always so nice" and writes out the progression of that happening.

Character arcs come in four forms:

Positive change arc: the character undergoes a massive change in their worldview that changes them for the better

Negative change arc: the character undergoes a massive change in their worldview that changes them for the worse

Flat arc: the character doesn't change at all because that's not the point of the character; the point of the character is to effect change in other characters

Recursive arc: the character changes (either positively or negatively) and then changes back.

Most villains, for example, have flat arcs. They don't change throughout the story; they start a bastard and they end a bastard. But they're so much of a bastard that the plot and the characters all bend and break around them. Frieza from DBZ is my favorite go-to example of a flat arc. Frieza just fucking exists, and he effects major change in several of the main characters as the plot bends around his villainy.

Actual change arcs (positive or negative) deal with taking a fundamental lie that a character believes (either about themselves or the world) and exposing it for the lie that it is and forcing them to accept the truth. How they react to the truth is what determines whether it's a positive arc or a negative arc.

Leon Kennedy, as a character, goes through two negative change arcs back-to-back in RE2make and then recovers with a positive change arc in RE4make.

This is different from a recursive arc.

A recursive arc would bring him right back to where he was prior to his negative changes. RE4make doesn't do that. Leon is never the same person that he was at the start of RE2make ever again. But he definitely gets better from where he ended.

Character arcs follow a simple progression:

the starting lie that the character believes

moments of doubt that challenge that lie

the point of no return where the character can't trick themselves into believing the lie is true anymore; the moment where the character irreversibly (unless it's a recursive arc) changes

the new mindset that the character adopts as a result of their change

So, going into RE2make, for Leon:

Lie that he believes: Social hierarchies and institutions always serve the greater good, people are good by default, and things will work themselves out because there's an order to the world -- the good guys always win, and the bad guys always lose.

This lie gets challenged multiple times before he finally accepts that his worldview is flawed and needs to change.

Doubt moment #1: Marvin points a gun at Leon and tells him to leave the police station without him

This is the first big moment where Leon has to confront the fact that things don't always work themselves out. He went into his relationship with Marvin thinking that if he could just get him out of here, he'd be okay. But Marvin was never going to be okay, no matter what Leon did -- and Leon's so insistent on not believing that that Marvin has to point a gun at him and order him to leave without him.

Doubt moment #2: Ben Bertolucci's death

Even though Mr. X is the one who physically performs the act of killing Ben, what really killed him was Leon's unwillingness to let him out of the cell because he felt like he had to ask for authorization to do so. The strict social hierarchy that Leon has been subscribed to gets challenged here, because if Leon had just said "fuck the rules" and opened the cell, Ben would've lived. And Leon knows that. This gets further reinforced when Leon listens to Ben's tape and he has to come to terms with the fact that Ben died because Leon was insistent on asking permission from a corrupt man who had no business being a caretaker for others in the first place.

Doubt moment #3: Ada's reaction to Kendo

At this point, Leon still thinks that Ada is FBI. He's utterly shocked by her callousness and expresses to her that he joined the force to help people like Kendo and his daughter, not just write them off and kill them when things got too hard. Ada tries to impress upon Leon that not everyone can be saved, which then reinforces the idea that things don't always work themselves out.

Doubt moment #4: Annette tells Leon that Ada is a mercenary

He's suspected it for a while, but he's still not ready to wholly believe Annette, because he's still clinging to the idea that people are naturally good, that the FBI is a sacred institution, and that no one would be so horrible as to lie to someone else in a very serious, horrifying situation like a zombie apocalypse. But with Annette's revelation, he's getting very close to the breaking point.

Change moment: Ada admits to using Leon and points a gun at him

This is the big moment. He can't deny it anymore. There's no going back now. Ada was dishonest, titles like FBI Special Agent don't matter, and things don't always work themselves out because some things are beyond human control, and some of the things that are within human control get manipulated by bad actors.

This moment changes Leon's worldview forever. There is no way for him to go back to what he initially believed, because this moment definitively shattered it. There's no "lol jk you were right all along" coming anymore. Leon has to accept this truth, because the world is no longer giving him a choice.

State of mind as a result of his change: People can't be trusted, but as long as I look out for myself, I'll be fine.

At the end of RE2make, Leon stops trusting people outright and starts to believe that he can only trust himself and his own judgment. He buys wholly into the idea that the only person who will ever have his best interests in mind is him.

He's changed for the worse. He's unwilling to trust other people or open himself up to others at all; it causes him to retreat.

As a result of this new mindset, he feels confident enough to tell Claire to leave Sherry with him so that she can go find Chris -- because, again, he's the only one who can look out for him, anyway.

This, however, is also a lie, and it's one that gets immediately disproven.

Change moment: the CIA kidnaps Leon and Sherry State of mind as a result of his change: It's not people that are the problem. I'm the one who can't be trusted -- my judgment can't be trusted, so I should just keep my head down and follow orders.

I feel like this one is pretty self-explanatory. Leon made a judgment call that blew up in his face so spectacularly that it caused him to reflect on his previous change arc and realize:

Yes, it's true that Ada was dishonest, and yes, it's true that things don't always work out -- but, if I had had better judgment, none of this would've happened in the first place.

His first arc caused him to retreat; this change moment causes him to surrender. Leon willingly gives up everything that made him him because this change in viewpoint effectively destroys everything that he thought was true about himself and the world around him. It leaves him jaded and directionless, and he stops trying to find his own answers; he willingly surrenders his autonomy and his agency because of how completely he's come to distrust himself.

This is also the lie that he brings into RE4make with him. What he believes here -- while not without merit -- is still untrue. And RE4make is determined to show him that it's untrue.

Doubt moment #1: Hunnigan verifies Luis's identity

When Leon meets Luis, he tries his hardest to just ignore him and not engage in conversation with him at all, because he doesn't trust himself to make the right judgment call when it comes to interacting with people he meets on his missions. But he finally takes a chance and decides to trust his own judgment of Luis being shady, which Hunnigan confirms by revealing that he used to work for Umbrella. This is the first moment of many that Leon's gut instinct turned out to be right.

Doubt moment #2: Cabin sequence

This is a one-two punch of a gut instinct call to send Ashley away (which pays off when she saves both him and Luis) and then a risky decision to trust Luis, despite knowing that he's former Umbrella. He has to take this risk, because Ashley's plaga puts him in a position that forces him to make a decision. Either he trusts Luis, or he reports back to Hunnigan that Ashley's been infected.

And he knows exactly what happened the last time the government found out about a blonde girl under his care who was infected. (Really says a lot that he trusts an Umbrella researcher before the government he works for.)

Doubt moment #3: Mendez fight

Another decision to send Ashley away pays off when she, once again, comes back from the outside to save his ass. He gets a smile and a helping hand to his feet as a reward.

Now.

Because the lie that Leon believes is so strong due to the devastating nature and close proximity of his two negative arcs, his moments of doubt get tested over and over again as the lie attempts to pull him back in. This forces Leon to commit to his positive change, because those are his only two options -- either he commits, or he surrenders. And his desire to save Ashley outweighs the fear and anxiety caused by his lie.

So, even though Leon doesn't actually believe in himself, he has to tell himself that he does.

Test moment #1: Ashley gets possessed and then runs away from him in tears Test moment #2: Ada tells him he can't save Ashley

Failing these tests would bring him right back to the start of his character arc, which is surrender.

He passes both of those tests, but only barely. This is why he's terrified to the point of his voice shaking slightly when he starts giving Ashley the pep talk. He doesn't actually believe some of the things he's saying to her because his change hasn't yet taken place, but he needs her to believe that he does.

Test moment #3: Leon gets trapped in the cage Doubt moment #4: Ashley frees him from the cage

Before the camera cuts away from him in the cage, he has to take a trembling, steadying breath. He's still terrified. He still doesn't believe that he's making the right decisions.

But then yet another judgment call pays off, and -- after his three big tests, Ashley is the most beautiful sight he's ever seen when she appears on that balcony. She has consistently proved him wrong in the best possible ways, and she's what causes him to start to believe.

Test moment #4: Verdugo takes Ashley & Salazar's ritual

This is the first time that Leon not only passes his test, but he gets high marks on it. He's not nervous or unsure this time when he looks up from the floor of the waterway and says: "Hang in there, Ashley. I'm coming for you."

But we can't yet say that he's had his big change moment, because it all comes very close to crashing right back down.

Test moment #5: Krauser's introduction & Luis's death

Krauser's emergence rattles Leon so much that it almost undoes all of the progress of his character arc so far. Instinctually and intellectually, Leon knows that Krauser is an active threat who just killed a man in cold blood -- and yet he still refuses to face off against him in a serious way, and he still tries to talk reason into Krauser.

The lie has him in a tight grip here, because Krauser was someone whose judgment that Leon has always trusted better than his own. So, surely, this whole thing must just be a misunderstanding. He's convinced that he's perceiving the situation wrong.

But he's not. It's still just part of his lie.

And now, the lie gets reinforced again as he watches Luis die. At this point, Leon has no reason to believe that he can actually save anyone.

This is why he's so ready to lie down and surrender again when he finds Ashley unconscious on the cot. Even though he gets the suppressant to her and she responds to it well, as soon as Leon's own symptoms return, his first instinct is to sit down and prepare to shoot himself. His confidence is in the fucking dirt.

Doubt moment #5: Ashley wakes up

Ashley has been the source of all of his doubt moments up to this point, and so when she wakes up, it's such a powerful moment for him that it soothes the panic caused by Krauser's appearance and Luis's death. Leon re-commits to his positive change, but there's still one last thing that has to happen...

Change moment: Krauser fight

Much like Ada pointing a gun at him, Leon is forced to confront his lie head on. When Krauser actually says the words out loud: "Worried about the girl, is that it? That's just like you. You always had poor judgment." there's no avoiding it anymore.

Leon takes a look at Krauser -- someone whose judgment he once trusted unquestioningly -- and seeing how far he's fallen, while also considering just how much Ashley has proved his lie wrong over and over and over again, inspires real and lasting change in Leon's perception of himself and his place in the world around him.

Seeing where Krauser's judgment has gotten him and comparing it with where Leon's own judgment has gotten him makes it very obvious that there's a clear winner.

His change moment starts with the words: "Nah, time for the teacher to be taught." and ends with him plunging Krauser's own knife into his heart.

If Leon still believed any part of his lie, he wouldn't have been able to take the final, definitive step to end Krauser's life.

But it's a new day for him.

Reinforcement of change: Waking up in Luis's lab

This is the payoff for Leon's change. Because he believes in himself so definitively now, he's able to finally win against Saddler in a battle of wills. He pushes back the influence of the hivemind, makes it to Luis's lab, and successfully removes Ashley's plaga.

He actually, really did it.

And not only did he do that, but he did it so well that he inspired Ashley to do the same.

State of mind as a result of his change: I have sound judgment and can trust myself to make good decisions, irrespective of rank or institutional assistance. I, personally, as Leon and not Agent Kennedy, am capable of making a positive impact on a person's life.

Take a look back at the lie that he brought into RE2make with him.

Now re-read his endpoint after changing in RE4make.

That is what a character arc does. That is the purpose.

Leon couldn't have saved Ashley without going through all of the changes that he did in between the start of RE2make and the end of RE4make. A guy with the attitude of "people are good and things will work themselves out" would have never been able to rescue someone from a violent, mind-controlling cult.

So Leon had to change into someone who could.

Casimir tends to be aggressive, forgetful, and occasionally reckless.

He does have a secret soft side underneath his hostile demeanor, but he rarely shows that side of him, only becoming more friendly and trusting towards those he’s closest to.

He also tends to be snarky sometimes. Honestly, he’s a bit of a jerk but only because he doesn’t know how to handle his emotions.

Origins

His Saturnian origins have been narrowed down to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. He doesn’t have any memories of it, though, as he was still fairly young when his parents sent him away.

He was adopted by Queen Tyr’ahnee, but she never told him where she found him or why she took him in.

All he knows is that ever since, he was raised as a Prince since he couldn’t return home, as his fellow Saturnians have been wiped out after a catastrophic event.

Queen Tyr’ahnee had him trained to become a General in the empire’s army, but he didn’t get too far as he ended up running away from Mars and landed on Earth.

Trivia / Misc.

Trivia

His Martian name, B-3 stands for Beta-3. It refers to his placement and role within the Empire. His translated name, Phe’tulente, is a play on the word petulant and is also pronounced as such.

He is able to speak and translate Saturnian.

Casimir was present when the catastrophe struck his home planet, and it resulted in him repressing those memories until he forgot about them almost completely. The memories are foggy, but he can still remember bits and pieces of it.

Speaking of his Saturnian origins, he was actually the prince of Saturn and its moons, but his family’s empire had to move to the moons after an incident involving the main planet.

His neurodivergent love language is penguin pebbling. He has so many cools rocks that he just gives to all his closest friends and everything. Seriously, his house could be a Museum for Cool Rocks.

I Wish I Could Walk In Heels

AN: Oooh, so close to Ada! Not this chapter though. Sorry lol. I, once again, did not re-read fully. I glanced at it. So mistakes may be possible. Have fun folks!

Chapter 6:

-September 29, 1998-

By the time you had back tracked and made it through the gate it was past midnight. Early morning 12 am on September 29th. Here's to hoping this day will be better. You don't know how much more shit you could take.

First goal, get into the police station. Easier said than done considering all the entrances were blocked. Either by items or by the undead.

Oh wait, an open window. Bingo. Only thing is you had to take out a few zombies trying to make their way through. You managed to do so fairly easily. At this point, you're a zombie killing pro. You know exactly what part of the head to hit to make it explode in one shot. The morbid part of you is weirdly satisfied when that happens. But it's nice not to waste 5 shots on one zombie. My, how far you've come.

You shimmied the window open and climbed through, carefully and quietly shutting it behind you. You don't know what could be in here.

You turned and your stomach dropped at the sight before you. This isn't good. Looks like the police station was overrun. How do you know this? Well, the first thing you saw when you turned around was blood. Blood and dead bodies. At least, you hoped they were dead. You didn't want to use up more ammo than necessary.

Okay, next mission, find Ben. Again, easier said than done. You've never been to the former art museum, now turned into a police station. You have no idea where you are currently. Just that it was dark and bloody and there were bodies.

You see a door down the hall to the left and one down the hall in front of you. You tried to think. You entered from the far left of the building, the first window. So if you walk forward, you might reach the main hall and find survivors. Survivors who can hopefully help you find Ben and you can all leave this city, living happily ever after knowing Umbrella will get shut down after this incident.

I mean, there is no way they can sweet talk their way out of it, right? They caused an outbreak and a mass genocide of over 100,000 people. Oh, and let's not forget the animals. No creature was left unscathed. They fucked up. They fucked up big time.

Fuckers.

You decided to just carefully walk to the forward door and see where you end up. You opened the door and saw what you believed to be the reception room. Unfortunately, there were more bodies. You see another door and decided to try it out and see where it leads.

You opened the door into a big, grand and fancy room with marble statues. Okay, this is promising. You saw the big double doors and decided that this was the main entrance. 

Now you just need to find survivors.

"Ma'am? Are you alright? You're not bitten are you?" A man's voice asked, startling you.

You jumped and gasped, hand on your chest to calm your heart. "Holy- no. No. This isn't my blood." You awkwardly gestured to yourself, as you turned to face the man. A police officer, judging by the uniform. Funny

If it wasn't for the circumstances you're sure you would have been arrested immediately waltzing in a police station in blood covered clothes.

"Ah. Zombies?" He asked.

"And the like. Lots of stuff happening out there." You said awkwardly. He nodded.

"And in here. Barely anyone is left anymore. I have a man searching for a way out for those of us who remain. But the longer we stay here the more our numbers dwindle." He said.

You nodded in understanding. "Oh, I'm Y/n by the way."

"I'm Marvin Branagh. Nice to meet you. Where'd you come from?" He asked.

"Oh, I climbed through a window. Had to kill some zombies in the process. Sorry for, you know, breaking and entering."

"You killed some of those things trying to get in. I'm not mad." He laughed. You studied the man closely.

Marvin had a short, buzzed haircut and a goatee on his dark skinned face. Looking in his eyes, you could tell that he was just as tired as you were. If not more. The weight of everything has taken a toll on him.

"I'm actually looking for someone. A friend of mine was arrested just before this all started. You think you could help me find him?" I asked.

"Hmm, well the prisoners were all released from what I was told." Your heart sinks, maybe Ben wasn't here.

"Who told you that? Irons?" You asked.

He nodded. "I haven't been to the cells since this all started, though, so I may be wrong. There are quite a few obstacles to get there. The undead and locked doors alike. You'd have to work to get there." He wished he could be more helpful, but this station is expansive and crawling with zombies and Lickers. He couldn't afford to go running around when he still had a few survivors to take care of.

"You can't help me?" You questioned.

He shook his head. "I have a few survivors left to look after. I can give you a map, but otherwise, you're on your own on this one. I'm sorry." 

You shook your head. "No worries. I understand. Focus on getting your people out of the city. I'll go see if my friend is still around and then join you." 

"Alright. Here's that map I promised you. First, second and third floor. Don't lose it. I don't have another one to give you." He warned.

"Thank you. I appreciate it." You tell him, before studying the map. Looks like the only way to get to the holding cells is through the parking garage. The only way you see to get there is through an elevator in Irons office.

"Any chance you can point me another direction that leads to the parking garage?" You asked Marvin.

"The only other way is blocked. So unfortunately going through his office is the only way to go. Be careful though, people have been "mysteriously" dying when he's present, and I just know he has something to do with it." He told you. 

"What do you mean?" You question.

"Well, he started off by giving us strange orders. Like locking all the doors and scattering our weapons throughout the station. Then he went one step further and separated the survivors into separate groups. Haven't seen any of them since." He told you.

Smart man. Finally catching on to how shifty his Chief of Police actually is. I guess the outbreak is making Irons show his true colors.

"I assume I need a key." You said.

"Yes, the diamond key. There are at least two hidden around the station. Where exactly, I'm not sure. I wish I could be of more help." He said.

"It's fine. I'll figure it out. I'll break the damn door if I have to. Thank you." 

He nodded. "Meet back here when you're done. I should be here when you get back."

You smiled and nodded. Turning on your feet, you made your way up the stairs to the second floor to explore and see if you could find anything useful. Like a key or lock pick. Or a grenade. It's a fucking wooden door. It can break. 

One way or another, you're getting through that room.

-September 29, 1998-

You explored about every damn inch of the second floor you could access and didn't find a damn diamond key. You found more ammo for your guns though. And grenades and more guns, but you just took one grenade and left the rest for someone else who may need them more. It's not like you're a weapons expert here.

You might just blow up the door. You're just worried about attracting what survivors had deemed "Lickers" in the process. Lickers. Not a name you would have chosen, but fitting I suppose. 

As you were about to head to Irons office, you heard gunshots from the main entrance area.

You quickly ran out the door and down the stairs, coming across Marvin. He was clutching his side in pain.

"Hey! Hey, what happened? Are you hurt?" You asked him as you ran up to check on him.

"Stay away from me!" He exclaimed, panicked. He pushed you away and ran through a door. Where was he going?

The door to the front entrance opens and you turn to see who it was, hand on your gun ready to shoot, only pausing when you recognize who it was.

"Tyrell?" You asked.

"Y/n? What are you doing here?" 

"I could ask you the same thing."

"A mission. You?"

"Same here. Sort of. Need help with anything?" You offered as he walked over to the computers on the desk meant to be for the receptionists.

As Tyrell was about to respond, the door opened again and you saw another familiar face.

"Where'd that cop go?"

"Don't know, don't care. We got a job to do. If our intells still worth a damn, then Bards' in the S.T.A.R.S office. Let's find him and take him into custody." Tyrell said.

"Custody? I thought this was a rescue." Carlos said, before pausing when he finally noticed you. "Y/n?"

"Hey. Small world, huh? Don't worry, I'll be out of your hair in a moment. Just a heads up though, if you hear a loud boom coming from upstairs, that's me with a grenade." You tell them.

"Do I wanna know?" He asked.

"Eh, it's just that nearly every damn door has been locked. I've been unlocking everything upstairs and trying to find one key to a certain room. Haven't had any luck though."

"What key? Maybe I can keep an eye out." Carlos offered.

"Not if I blow it up first. But if you find a diamond key lying around, then let me know." 

"Alright, will do. Good to see you, Y/n."

"You too. Later boys. Stay safe. Oh, and watch out for Lickers. They're nasty little fuckers."

"What?"

"Lickers. Mutated monsters with no skin and long tongues that can pierce skin. Not fun. Anyways, good luck." You tell them as you walk back upstairs to make your way back to the office. You listened to their conversation as you went.

"Carlos, take a look at this. I've located the S.T.A.R.S office. Remember, Bard had access to Umbrella's darkest secrets. He knows we'll try to keep him under our thumb." Tyrell said.

"So this "search and rescue mission" is really more like "find and detain". Right. Good to know." You hear Carlos's voice fade the further you went.

Is Nathaniel Bard here? You very much doubt it since Marvin hadn't mentioned any survivors in the S.T.A.R.S office. And what do they plan to do when they find him?

You shook your head. You have no time for more side quests. You have to find Ben.

You made your way to his office and as you turned the corner, the door slammed open and Irons walked out. Quickly turning around, you opened a closet door, sliding in, shutting it, and listening with bated breath as he stomped away from his office and down the hall where you had just been standing moments ago.

You waited until you were sure the coast was clear before carefully opening the door and peaking out into the hall. No sign of Irons. You walked out of the closet and made your way back to the office door. You checked to see if it was unlocked. Nope. 

Just as you were about to break the damn door down, it slammed open and you lightly screeched as a body collided with your own.

"Get off me!" A voice yelled. A familiar voice.

Backing up and looking at the owner of the voice, your eyes widened. "Katherine?" You questioned in disbelief.

Katherine looked up with tears in her eyes when she recognized you. "Y/n!" She quickly pulled you in close and held you tightly.

You lightly shushed her and pushed her into the room, shutting the now unlocked door behind you. "What are you doing here? I thought you would have been long gone by now. With your father." 

"He left me." Katherine said, anger in her tone. "He left me in the care of Irons and got out of the city as fast as he could as soon as things started to go down. You were right about him. And about Irons. We need to go. This is the first time he's let me out of his sight." She began crying slightly, the stress from everything getting to her.

You broke the hug and looked over her appearance. She was wearing a pretty white dress and her hair was half pinned back. She didn't look outwardly harmed. You would have killed Irons if she had.

"Did he do anything to you?" You asked as you dragged her outside to the balcony leading to the elevator to the garage.

"No, but I watched him kill all those people. I know I'm next. You were right, Y/n. He's a horrible person. And we need to leave before he gets back." She grabbed at your arms, desperate that you understand.

"Okay, we will. We just need to make a pit stop first." You said as you made it to the elevator. You pressed the button, summoning the elevator.

"The parking garage? Why?" She asked.

"Because that also happens to be the only way to get to the cell block."

"For, Ben? Irons said he killed him. He's gone, Y/n." She said sadly.

The elevator opened up and you dragged her in, quickly pressing the button once you both cleared the doorway.

You shookyour head. "I refuse to believe that. We at least have to check before we go."  The elevator started descending and you grabbed your shotgun and checked that it was fullyloaded. Lord knows what's down there.

"Do we have any chance of escaping the city?" She asked you. 

"Dwindles with each passing day. You remember how to shoot a gun?" You asked her, remembering how she briefly took a class on the subject.

"Yeah. Of course." She nodded. 

"Great. Here." You hand her the handgun and a pack of ammo. "Make sure it's fully loaded. I have plenty more ammo in my bag, you just have to ask and I'll hand you more. Seeing as you don't have pockets." 

"Well, excuse me. I wasn't exactly dressing for a zombie apocalypse." She deadpanned. You snorted.

"Nope. Just for your boyfriend. You look good, by the way. Ben will be happy to see you." 

"Don't get my hopes up." She said as the elevator door finally opened up to a room.

You walked out of the elevator and toward the door leading out to the garage. Before you opened it, you turned to Katherine.

"You ready?" You ask, shotgun in hand.

She cocked her gun and nodded. "Ready." 

You both carefully walked out the door, keeping your eyes peeled for any zombies. You hear aggressive barking in the distance. Turned police dogs, you assumed. It sounded like they were still in the cages, so you should be alright.

Once you determined the coast was clear, you grabbed your map to check you were in the right place.

"Alright. This way. Stay close." You told Katherine, shoving the map back into your pocket. She nodded and you made your way through the cars parked haphazardly to the door you needed to get to.

"Please be unlocked." You mumbled as your fingers wrapped around the handle and turned it. You grinned when it opened. "Nice."

Walking into the cell block, you both stay close to avoid the zombies reaching out through the cells and into the hallway in an attempt to grab you. You almost gave up, only seeing a bunch of undead, when you came across a cell in the corner with a man sitting on his bed, smoking his cigarette. 

"Ben!" Katherine beat you to it, running towards the cell and reaching for him.

"Katherine!" He grinned in relief, running up to hold her through the bars. "I thought you were dead." He said.

"I thought you were dead too!" She nearly wanted to sob at the thought. She almost left him thinking that Irons was telling the truth. 

You watched the heartfelt reunion with a smile, happy for your friends. Though it dropped into a face of mock disgust when they started to kiss each other through the bars.

"Ew. Yeah, I'm here too. Still." You said, gaining their attention.

"Hey, Y/n. What the hell took you so long?" Ben joked.

"Oh you know, I just got a little distracted from the hordes of zombies and others running through the city. My bad. Next time I'll try to be more punctual." You sassed back. Katherine snorted at your interaction, always an amusing scene for her.

"You better. Or I'll have to revoke your pay. Unless… you happen to have a key or something to get me out of here?" He asked.

"Ah, I didn't really think that far ahead. Let's see what we have to work with here." You turned away from the couple to study the lock as they continued to enjoy each other's company. Looked like an electric mechanism of some kind. And it's missing three chips.

You sighed and popped the gum in your mouth. Hmm, theoretically, you just need something metallic to act as a conductor for the electricity. To get it from point A to point B. At least, you think that's how it works. You're no scientist.

Wait, aluminum is metallic. Your gum wrappers are metallic. That's it! You grabbed your bag off your shoulders and began to look through it for your gum.

You froze when you heard a gun cock and felt something hard against the middle of your back.

You turned your head slightly to see Katherine and Ben looking your way with wide eyes. You sighed, closing your eyes in frustration. "Is that a gun in your hand, Chief Irons, or are you just happy to see me." You weakly joked.

"Can't it be both? Drop the guns, the bag, and put your hands up." Irons spat, pressing the gun deeper into your back, making you hiss from your bruises being pressed onto.

You wished you could do some badass maneuver to kick the gun away and shoot the bastard. Sadly, you are but a normal, boring, human who didn't want to take any chances getting shot. You should have invested in those self defense classes.

You put the safety on and slowly crouched to put the gun and bag onto the floor. Katherine followed, looking at you with worry. You slowly stood and raised your hands up once more.

"Turn around." Irons demanded you. You hesitated, and he pressed the gun further into your back. "Don't make me say it again."

You slowly turned around, arms still up, and made eye contact with the man. You glared with hatred as he looked you up and down.

"Hmm, you're a pretty little thing. A hot mess though." He said as he glanced at your bloodied and dirt covered clothing. "You just got here? I would have recognized you amongst the other survivors." 

"Yes." You spat. You didn't like the way he was looking at you. The same way Katherine had described last week at the diner. Like he wanted to murder and sleep with you.

"You should have stayed away. Katherine over there, well, she has a prior engagement she will be attending to." You didn't like the way he said that.

"Yeah right. She's not going anywhere with you." Ben spat as you glared at the man, fully ready to fight him, even if he had a gun to you, if so much as glanced at Katherine.

"You're really in no position to make that decision. Now, back up toward the cell, girl." He gestured to the cell Ben was in. 

You didn't move, making him more aggressive. He pointed the gun to Katherine and you gasped, quickly stepping back and in front of her, once more in the line of fire.

"Stop! Okay, stop. I'll do as you say. Just, please don't hurt her." You begged. Begging to him left a bitter taste in your mouth, but there was nothing else you could do.

Irons grinned a nasty grin. Clearly enjoying the power he held over you three. "That's more like it. Back up." He backed you up to the cell where Ben was at. Your back was pressed against the steel bars and you stood right next to Katherine. You blindly reached out for her hands as you watched Irons closely. She grabbed your hand and squeezed so tightly that you felt the bones would shatter at any moment.

She's terrified.

Irons quickly reached forward and grabbed Katherine, wrapping his left arm over her chest and holding a gun at her temple with his right hand. She screamed in fear and you lunged forward to take her back. Ben shouted and banged angrily against the bars. Zombies from the neighboring cells growled and groaned louder from the noises, making the atmosphere feel even more unsettling.

"Ah ah ah. Don't move. I won't hesitate to pull the trigger. You both know this." He said to you and Ben. You paused, before you slowly backed away, a few tears escaped and trailed down your face. Katherine was openly sobbing, eyes pleadingly staring at you for help.

"Please, let her go. Take me if you have to just, please. Don't hurt her." You begged.

You have no control over the situation. And that scared you.

He seemed to consider your offer for a moment, but shook his head. "No, she'll stay with me." He puts the chips into the slots, still holding Katherine at gunpoint, and opens Ben's cell. "Now, why don't you join your friend in that cell? Keep him company until I come back for you two."

You don't move, making him shoot the wall beside you. You jumped and Katherine screamed.

"Just do it, Y/n! Do as he says! For once, don't be a hero! I'll be fine!" Katherine sobbed. You and Ben didn't believe her. Neither did she. She knew this would be the last time she saw you. But she didn't want her best friend or boyfriend to die for her. She didn't want anyone to die for her.

You reluctantly walked into the cell. Ben went to run out and attack Irons, but the cell quickly slammed shut before he could. You leaned against the bars and held onto them with a tight grip, glaring at Irons. If looks could kill, he'd be long gone by now.

"Have fun you two. I'll be back later. Maybe." Iron laughed as he walked away with a sobbing Katherine.

"I love you, Ben! I love you, Y/n! You were the best friend I've ever had. Protect each other!" Katherine yelled. Tears streamed down your face as you watched your best friend be dragged away. You failed her.

"Get back here you son of a bitch!" Ben yelled.

"Katherine! Katherine! Don't you dare give up! You fight! Please fight!" You yelled desperately.

You sighed in defeat as they walked out of sight. You wiped away your tears and looked for a way out. Your bag. You see your bag on the other side of the hall and sit on the ground, reaching as far as you could through the bars to get it. But it was too far away.

You grunt and hit the ground in frustration. You noticed Ben's bag in the corner of the cell and crawled to it.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Ben asked incredulously.

"Looking for something to get us out." You told him as you shuffled through his bag.

"There's nothing. Believe me, I've already looked in the last week I've been here." Ben sighed.

You let out a shout of frustration and threw the bag to the ground. His stuff fell out and he quickly rushed to put it back.

"Hey! Careful. The tape recorder is in there."

"The one from the Annette interview?" 

"Yeah. I have it just in case." He said as he sat on the bed.

"I gave the drive to a S.T.A.R.S member. Jill Valentine. I figured she could get further with it than we could." You said as you sat on the bed beside him.

"Probably for the best. We don't have much use for it stuck in here." Ben sighed as he lit a cigarette, offering a box toward you.

You debated for a moment before shaking your head. You're not a smoker. And if you somehow miraculously survived all this, you'll be damned if lung cancer was the thing that took you out.

"Suit yourself." Ben shrugged, taking a drag of his cigarette. "When's the last time you've slept?" 

You snorted. "I don't know. What day is it?" 

"Might as well get some sleep, Y/n. Not like we can get out of here anytime soon. Here, I'll even sit on the floor for you." He said, moving off the bed to sit on the floor.

"How thoughtful." You deadpanned as you laid on the bed. You looked at your watch and sighed. It was broken. When did that happen?

You looked to the ceiling and hoped, to whatever entity out there, that Katherine will be alright. That all three of you will be okay.

This day wasn't any better.

speaking of re2 characters if they didn’t suck, thoughts on ben bertolucci’s remake treatment? he got made SO much worse in the remake ngl, just turning him into a crazy guy who gets killed instead of a rational guy who’s literally right about the corruption in the city. and tbh saying it out loud, it kiiinda adds to the whole thing in re2make where the police corruption is consolidated solely into the character of chief irons being paid by umbrella and not something within the system

OMG YESSS GOD how they treated Ben in remake is so.... I'm screaming at the top of my lungs.

Like when I first played RE2 I had not seen anything with the original game and even I was confused at how Leon treated him. There's a weird trend in RE2R where the characters talk as if things are normal, despite them obviously not being normal (Claire/Leon telling Marvin they need to get to a hospital, Leon telling Ben he has to talk to the chief, etc). Like when Leon said that, I groaned because I'm like, for all you know, Leon Scott Kennedy, the chief is dead. Sorry you can't fulfill your dream to cosplay a cop but you have no authority right now. stfu.

But anyways, in the original game Ben had the intel Ada was looking for, that Umbrella was up to something big and that the chief of police was also in on it. This is the important nuance that the remake forgot! Remake basically says that Irons took bribes from Umbrella and that's bad. Original says that Irons took bribes from Umbrella which, in turn, helped him gain control over basically the core part of the city, allowing him to enforce the law and cover stuff up as he pleased. They don't emphasize the control Irons and Umbrella had over the city!

(why does leon never learn about irons in the remake lmao)

Ben is the one who locks himself in the cell because he's terrified of Birkin killing him. Despite Ben being a dick, Leon still wants to save him. It's interesting how in the remake, Ben is begging for his life and instead, Leon's refusing because "he must've done something to deserve being locked up." All they had to do to save the face of the protagonist is have Leon genuinely try to save Ben, but he unfortunately gets killed before he can. No, Leon just stands there while Ben gets his skull crushed and when Ada comes by he just says "I don't know what happened." YES YOU DO? YOU JUST LET A MAN DIE, LMAO? Seriously, did they want us to like Leon at all in this game? He's so unlikable lmao.

In the remake, even Ben's death is in vain because he had a tape recording on him that Ada and Leon listen to, whereas in the original Leon had to be there for Ben's final moments, and in that instance Ben was able to use his final breaths to help Leon and Ada uncover more about the secrets going on under Raccoon City.

All in all, I think the original portrayal of Ben was perfect? I really don't know why they changed it and why they changed it the way they did. Remake Ben ends up hurting 3 characters in the process, and he overall is just a character who was there Just Because he was in the original. They could've had him be a random civilian, already squished to death, Leon spots the parking garage key, and when he finally opens the door picks up the key and tape recording and literally nothing changes.

You absolutely give off a vibe that if you were to ever quit writing tickle fics of the egos that you would send it off with a grand finale where EVERYONE gets tickled. Probably by a big viney monster.

I can see the plot being something like Marvin's magic mishaps and one of Henrik's experiements (or an experiment on Marvin's magic) going "horribly wrong" and how each character has their own little perspective of the chaos. And knowing you, you'd add small details the reference someone else's perspective (aka hearing a "manly shriek" followed by the perspective of said shriek). Each perspective of each character and what they were doing before the mishap, like Magnum tying up his boat before being scooped up by a creature similar to Gazooks from Raggedy Ann and Andy. Or Dark doing paperwork, his mind numbing as he reads over the numbers as Wilford bugs him to get up and stretch. Dark finally snaps after a playful poke and pins Wilford to the wall with a growly growl "You're about to stretch in a minute" followed by both also being grabbed by the monster.

The jims were doing brotherly twin activities with Eric, roughhousing with him. Both Jims get him pinned and are just about to get him. Eric closes his eyes, too flustered to watch but nothing happens. Surely it's an anticipation trick, but he falls for it. He peeks an eye open and reporter jim is no longer straddling his thighs. Camera jim ran off to rescue his brother and gets captured. Eric attempts to run off to get help and of course, gets captured as well.

Googles were probably in the middle of maintenance. Bing was doing a sick trick where he's doing a handstand on top of a ramp. Anti and Jamie were planning their next prank and it goes "horribly wrong" in the sense that it was rudely interrupted by the monster (they probably duct taped Chase to the wall and were just about to get him out. Poor chase doesn't even need to be scooped up!)

Robbie was being a little assistant for Shawn and in an attempt to show affection, he paints one of Robbie's cheeks to make him giggle. He goes back to work and finds something is brushing against his cheek. In a comedic turn of events Shawn thinks it's Robbie trying to get him back, only to discover it was in fact a paint brush like tendril/vine. Hijinks ensue.

Yancy was on facetime with Murderslaughter who is NOT helping the situation at all, telling the beast to aim for his ribs and teasing him about going soft if he couldn't handle one monster when he was used to 20 or.more hands grabbing him at a time. The beast proceeds to grow more appendages to get Yancy.

Jackie and Silver were probably practice sparring with each other for training as Host, Yandere, and Dr. Iplier watch. Jackie 80 percent of the time is able to pin Silver down, but Host keeps resetting their positions either way, getting a kick out of Jackie's determination and playful annoyance. Dr. Iplier is watching their vitals, superhero stamina is such an interesting thing, especially since this sparring has been going on for hours and only starting to get a little tired. Yandere is there to cheer on and shout out fighting manuevers, planning to have both heroes tuckered out before attacking themselves. They then just barely hear Host's narration murmurs, something about a monster about to interrupt their sparring. Couple of seconds later and bam, all 5 of them are captured and just their luck, the two superheroes are also captured and too weak to pry off the appendages

Illinois is the only one who almost got away. Almost. His overwhelming luck allowed him to not get captured. Until he ran into Actor who thought it'd be funny to throw him into the chaos. Actor was just about to walk away when Ben got captured. Some would say Actor would have just left him, but he was fulled by jealousy because no one messes with his butler but him!

Unus and Annus were in the middle of a séance for fun to see what would happen. They think they caused the monster to appear.

And that's all the ones I could think of. Obviously I would never ask you for such a big feat. But you defo give off the vibe that if you ever quit writing fanfics, you'd give one hell of a last hurrah!

It was all over the news. Soldier Boy blows up a restaurant while dining with his girlfriend. Questions were askd if he did it on purpose. If he thought that the woman by his side was starting to become a risk. It was obvious to everyone by now that he didn't want to be caught. He appeared in public, yeah, but noone seemed to be able to grasp him. He vanished out of everyones eyes within seconds. That Mallory and her men played a big part in that was unknown to them of course.

While he watched the scenes unfold on tv over and over again, he could still hear Y/N voice calling out for him. He still saw her Y/E/C eyes full with worry and shock. Ben had tried to keep his focus on her, to stay present and not lose control. But the damn song got louder and louder and he couldn't hold it back. In one moment Y/N was there right beside him, her small hand on his arm, demanding his attention and in the next second he woke up on the floor. Laying on his back in the middle of broken furniture and debris.

His mind replayed their dinner, while he tried to get up again. After a not so happy start, because of his stupid song, he didn't want to let her stew in her insecruritys just because he couldn't open his mouth. It's not like he didn't get what Y/N was trying to do. That she tried to make him open up to her. He listened to everything she said, but it was not his thing to talk about himself and his fucked up life. Let alone his fucked up mind.

But still he tried. It was not much he started to talk about but Y/N seemed to absorb every word he said like a sponge. Her surprised gaze and that small smile on her plush lips did things to his old and rusty heart and he began to wish he would've started talking to her sooner.

But in all this tragedy and danger that the whole situation had brought with, it also came with some surprises. Some of the kind that you can still use to your own advantage. It definitly helped him more that he thought would be possible. A mocking sigh disturbed his thoughts and brought his attention back into these four walls.

"What?" he asked grumpingly.

M.M. just shook his head. "Weren't you the one who said that you would protect her? Keep her safe?"

"And that I did, until..."

"Yeah, you did a really good job with that, motherfucker." Marvin cut him off and stood up.

"Nothing would've fucking happened when you all would do your job right!" Ben turned fully to the man next to him and started to ball his fists.

"Oh now it's our fault!" Marvin took a few steps forward.

"Yeah, it fucking is! If the fridgid cunt Mallory would be really on top of this game as she claims to be this would've never happend."

"You stupid motherfucker! You blew up that building!"

"Because none of you prevented Homelander from attacking me from behind!" Ben shouted and was about to go over to him.

But a small whimper made him stop in his tracks. He looked to the couch from where the sound was heared. Marvin did the same. Ben's face softened and he opend up his fists again. Another whimper came from Y/N's weak body that was buried under three blankets to keep her warm.

Annie had no other choice but to jump with her into the Hudson River to safe her from the explotion. The cold of the late november water had pushed all the air out of Y/N's lungs. The shock of the bitter cold water had hit her so strong, that she tried to breath in, but instead she swallowed a lot of water. Annie kept a good grip on her, but Y/N had panicked, before she lost concious.

Both women been in the water for several minutes, but the blonde supe never let go of her friend. Some of Mallory's men eventually got them out of the water. But not like Annie, who didn't even had a scratch, Y/N stayed unconcious. She was hypothermic and her lips were already blue. This morning, a few days later, she finally got out of the hospital and was back in their apartment.

The doctors had said, that she had no major injurys and was now just battling a cold. But Ben could almost hear her racing pulse and feel the high temperature rising from her body. And it was his fault. In the end it was him that blew up that building and he blamed himself for getting Y/N into this situation. Just that M.M. didn't need to know that. Y/N whimpered again and Ben had enough. He had to do something for her.

"Keep an eye on her." was all Ben said to M.M. before he left the apatment once again without looking back.

"I don't know where the fuck he went." Marvin said angrily into his phone. "The motherfucker just left the apartment hours ago!"

Ben stood infront of the door, not ready to open it yet. Listening in on M.M. was a better idea. He could hear the muffled voice of Mallory on the other end of the line, but he didn't understand a goddamn word. Shit. So he slowly opened the door.

"I can not leave her alone here! She's still not feeling well. Someone needs to take care of her!"

"I'm gonna take care of her. You can go now."

Ben answered casual and didn't waste a glance at Marvin. He took of his jacket and shoes, put the little white plastic bag he carried on the kitchen table and walked over to the couch. Y/N was still laying there under her blankets and seemed to be asleep still. But there was an empty bowl with a spoon in it right next to her on the floor. She ate something. Good.

"I'm not sure if that's a good idea." M.M. hung up the phone and grabed his stuff.

"I left the door open for you." now Ben turned his head to the other man and fixiated him with his eyes.

But Marvin didn't have to be asked twice. He closed the door behind him loudly and left just silence behind. After a few heartbeats Ben looked down on Y/N again and touched her forehead with the back of his hand. Her temperature was still high and he really did not like that. So, he went back over to the kitchen table and pulled a little orange bottle out of the plastic bag.

Y/N stirred a little while Ben came over to her and sat down infront of her.

"Hey, Y/N. Wake up for me." he said softly and brushed a few sweaty strands out of her face.

"Noo..." she replied with a whisper. "I wanna sleep."

"C'mon. I have something for you. It'll help."

She opend one eye very carefully and looked at the man infront of her. He was holdig up his hand and in it there was a little white pill. Oh god... She closed her eyes shut and turned her head away from him.

"I don't wanna take any of your drugs."

"These are not drugs..."

"I'm sick, Ben. Not depressed..."

"Could you fucking stop arguing with me for a second and just trust me?"

It took a moment, but Y/N turned her head back to him again and opened both eyes now. "What is it then?"

"Antibiotics."

She furrowed her brows. "Where did you get that?"

"Is this important right now?" he replied a little infurated, but then he took a deep breath in and his facial features softened again. "Please... just take it."

Now Y/N's eyes widened a little. He said please. Ben, THE Soldier Boy, probably the most stuck in time man of all, said please. She could not believe it, but it worked. She opened her mouth a little and he laid her the small pill on the tounge, before he gave her a glas of water. After she swallowed it all, she change her position on the couch to a more comfortable one and felt sleep already pulling on her concious again.

"I'm so cold..." was the last thing she said before she drifted off again.

But Ben heared her loud and clear. He changed into his pajamas and before he could change his mind he scootched himself on the couch right behind Y/N. She started to shiver as soon as he lifted the blankets to make room for himself, but after he hugged her and traped the covers over both of them he could hear her sigh in relieve. She really must've felt cold. And after some more time, Ben too drifted of into the debths of sleep.

When Y/N woke up the nex time, she felt a whole lot better. The fever finally went down and she was not as cold anymore. She also felt very rested and didn't seem to have any symptoms of a bad cold. She stretched extensively and felt a hard body behind her. The smile came automatically. Ben. But she also realized that she was not laying on the couch anymore. At some point in the night he must've carried her into the bedroom. That warmed her cheeks a little, feeling slighty embarrassed.

Slowly, to not disturb the man in her life, she stood up and left the room. After a quick visit to the bathroom she went on into the kitchen. It was already after ten but still noone was here, which was odd.

"Are they going to be late?" she asked herself while she filled the kettle with water.

"Noone's coming in today." said a deep voice behind her, so that she turned around.

Ben still looked tired, but his eyes were already fully concentrating on her. He came over to Y/N and stopped infront of her.

"Why not?"

"Because we need a break from them. YOU need a break. We'll be fine for one fucking day on our own."

The supe took her face into one hand and leveled his eyesight a little with hers to take a proper look at her face.

"How are you feeling?"

Kinda surprised by this question Y/N saw genuine concern in these wonderful green eyes and she felt the soft and gentle touch of his hand on her cheek. Her heart started to jump a little, but not because of the cold she still felt in her system.

"Way better, actually. My circulation is still a bit weak and I'm still a bit cold, but it's much better than yesterday."

"Good. That's good." Ben took his hand away and Y/N already missed the contact. "I had to give you two more pills during the night."

"What?" she asked surprised.

"Yeah. Your fever just didn't wanna fucking go down."

The woman didn't know what to say to this. He cared for her and she couldn't even remember it. Who was this guy and what did he do to the Ben she knew?

"Okay...eh... time for breakfast, right?" Y/N wanted to start doing something, but Ben was quick in stopping her.

"No, no, no." He guided her to the couch. "You gonna sit down and try to find something to watch on tv. I'll handle the breakfast."

Her eyes widened. "You...you'll make breakfast?"

He turned around to her. "What? No. I'm no fucking cook." shaking his head he grabbed his phone. "I order us something. Maybe on of the guys outside is bored."

Y/N chuckled. There he was back again. While she took the remote in hand to turn on the tv, she listened to Ben talking to whoever and commanding the person on the other end of the line to bring them breakfast. But that didn't seem to go as smooth as he had hoped for, judging on the profanities he barked into his phone. Y/N overheared it and zapped through the channels, when she catched a special broadcast that showed Homelander infront of a school building.

"Ben..." she called after the man in her kitchen, while she heard Homelander talking about an incident that happened in this school yesterday. She turned up the volume.

"What the..." Ben came over to Y/N and stood behind the couch, brows furrowed and eyes on the screen.

"For the last years, my son Ryan here, has lived in hiding." The camera panned down to Homelanders right side where he pulled his son forward and layed his arm around his shoulders. "It was simply to dangerous for him, since he didn't have me to protect him."

"That's one fucking way to put it." Ben said to himself, but Y/N heared him and she knew what he meant. Annie had told her a lot in the last weeks.

"So I thought... it would be time for Ryan to finally be able to go to school with kids his age. To make friends. Hm?" he shook his son a little and smiled down to him before he looked up again. "I mean, who would NOT want to go to school and be friends with MY son."

Homelander kept smiling but that faded pretty quickly and an eerie feeling crept up Y/N spine. With a glanze to Ben she saw that he didn't feel any different. His knuckles were already white from gripping the back of the couch so strong.

"But then he told me that yesterday some of the kids been mocking him, bulling him even. Especially one kid. And that is something I can not tolerate. So, I found that kid. If you all maybe want to look over there?"

The camera showed the other side of the street where Homelander had pointed to. Y/N gasped and sat up a little strighter. There was a man in a black suit, that held a dark haired boy in a strong grip. The little one looked terrified and it seemed as if he had cried. Then, there was Homelander on the screen again.

"Huuuh... now you wished you wouldn't have done that, am I right? But everyone needs to learn at one point. And now..." he looked down on Ryan again. "... my son is gonna teach you a lesson."

All eyes were on the little blonde boy who had no idea what to do. He took a step back and looked questioningly up to the man next to him.

"What... do you mean?"

Homelander smiled quickly to the cameras and people infront of him, before he got down on his knee to be on eyelevel with his son.

"Ryan, he's been mean to you. He didn't treat you like you deserve. You're MY son. It's time you start to show that to everyone." He said a little quieter, but the micros and cameras catched it anyway.

"What?" his eyes widened and he glanzed over to the other boy.

"How about you try out your laser eyes again? That's what I would do." But Ryan hesitated with fear in his eyes, not sure on what to do here. "C'mon. Make me proud and show them that we're a family."

And after some moments that seemed to fly by in slow motion, the last thing people saw on live tv was Ryan lasering the poor boy on the other side of the street.

Alright. So. Character arcs.

A character arc is a character's personal journey within the context of the wider plot. It takes the concept for what a writer wants to do with a character and turns it into a story all on its own.

So, for example, Leon in RE2. The concept of his character is "a naive rookie police officer gets his blinders ripped off and is shown that the world isn't always so nice."

That's not the plot of RE2. It's just the plot of Leon's personal story -- it's his character arc. The arc takes him from the starting point "a naive rookie police officer" to the end point "shown that the world isn't always so nice" and writes out the progression of that happening.

Character arcs come in four forms:

Positive change arc: the character undergoes a massive change in their worldview that changes them for the better

Negative change arc: the character undergoes a massive change in their worldview that changes them for the worse

Flat arc: the character doesn't change at all because that's not the point of the character; the point of the character is to effect change in other characters

Recursive arc: the character changes (either positively or negatively) and then changes back.

Most villains, for example, have flat arcs. They don't change throughout the story; they start a bastard and they end a bastard. But they're so much of a bastard that the plot and the characters all bend and break around them. Frieza from DBZ is my favorite go-to example of a flat arc. Frieza just fucking exists, and he effects major change in several of the main characters as the plot bends around his villainy.

Actual change arcs (positive or negative) deal with taking a fundamental lie that a character believes (either about themselves or the world) and exposing it for the lie that it is and forcing them to accept the truth. How they react to the truth is what determines whether it's a positive arc or a negative arc.

Leon Kennedy, as a character, goes through two negative change arcs back-to-back in RE2make and then recovers with a positive change arc in RE4make.

This is different from a recursive arc.

A recursive arc would bring him right back to where he was prior to his negative changes. RE4make doesn't do that. Leon is never the same person that he was at the start of RE2make ever again. But he definitely gets better from where he ended.

Character arcs follow a simple progression:

the starting lie that the character believes

moments of doubt that challenge that lie

the point of no return where the character can't trick themselves into believing the lie is true anymore; the moment where the character irreversibly (unless it's a recursive arc) changes

the new mindset that the character adopts as a result of their change

So, going into RE2make, for Leon:

Lie that he believes: Social hierarchies and institutions always serve the greater good, people are good by default, and things will work themselves out because there's an order to the world -- the good guys always win, and the bad guys always lose.

This lie gets challenged multiple times before he finally accepts that his worldview is flawed and needs to change.

Doubt moment #1: Marvin points a gun at Leon and tells him to leave the police station without him

This is the first big moment where Leon has to confront the fact that things don't always work themselves out. He went into his relationship with Marvin thinking that if he could just get him out of here, he'd be okay. But Marvin was never going to be okay, no matter what Leon did -- and Leon's so insistent on not believing that that Marvin has to point a gun at him and order him to leave without him.

Doubt moment #2: Ben Bertolucci's death

Even though Mr. X is the one who physically performs the act of killing Ben, what really killed him was Leon's unwillingness to let him out of the cell because he felt like he had to ask for authorization to do so. The strict social hierarchy that Leon has been subscribed to gets challenged here, because if Leon had just said "fuck the rules" and opened the cell, Ben would've lived. And Leon knows that. This gets further reinforced when Leon listens to Ben's tape and he has to come to terms with the fact that Ben died because Leon was insistent on asking permission from a corrupt man who had no business being a caretaker for others in the first place.

Doubt moment #3: Ada's reaction to Kendo

At this point, Leon still thinks that Ada is FBI. He's utterly shocked by her callousness and expresses to her that he joined the force to help people like Kendo and his daughter, not just write them off and kill them when things got too hard. Ada tries to impress upon Leon that not everyone can be saved, which then reinforces the idea that things don't always work themselves out.

Doubt moment #4: Annette tells Leon that Ada is a mercenary

He's suspected it for a while, but he's still not ready to wholly believe Annette, because he's still clinging to the idea that people are naturally good, that the FBI is a sacred institution, and that no one would be so horrible as to lie to someone else in a very serious, horrifying situation like a zombie apocalypse. But with Annette's revelation, he's getting very close to the breaking point.

Change moment: Ada admits to using Leon and points a gun at him

This is the big moment. He can't deny it anymore. There's no going back now. Ada was dishonest, titles like FBI Special Agent don't matter, and things don't always work themselves out because some things are beyond human control, and some of the things that are within human control get manipulated by bad actors.

This moment changes Leon's worldview forever. There is no way for him to go back to what he initially believed, because this moment definitively shattered it. There's no "lol jk you were right all along" coming anymore. Leon has to accept this truth, because the world is no longer giving him a choice.

State of mind as a result of his change: People can't be trusted, but as long as I look out for myself, I'll be fine.

At the end of RE2make, Leon stops trusting people outright and starts to believe that he can only trust himself and his own judgment. He buys wholly into the idea that the only person who will ever have his best interests in mind is him.

He's changed for the worse. He's unwilling to trust other people or open himself up to others at all; it causes him to retreat.

As a result of this new mindset, he feels confident enough to tell Claire to leave Sherry with him so that she can go find Chris -- because, again, he's the only one who can look out for him, anyway.

This, however, is also a lie, and it's one that gets immediately disproven.

Change moment: the CIA kidnaps Leon and Sherry State of mind as a result of his change: It's not people that are the problem. I'm the one who can't be trusted -- my judgment can't be trusted, so I should just keep my head down and follow orders.

I feel like this one is pretty self-explanatory. Leon made a judgment call that blew up in his face so spectacularly that it caused him to reflect on his previous change arc and realize:

Yes, it's true that Ada was dishonest, and yes, it's true that things don't always work out -- but, if I had had better judgment, none of this would've happened in the first place.

His first arc caused him to retreat; this change moment causes him to surrender. Leon willingly gives up everything that made him him because this change in viewpoint effectively destroys everything that he thought was true about himself and the world around him. It leaves him jaded and directionless, and he stops trying to find his own answers; he willingly surrenders his autonomy and his agency because of how completely he's come to distrust himself.

This is also the lie that he brings into RE4make with him. What he believes here -- while not without merit -- is still untrue. And RE4make is determined to show him that it's untrue.

Doubt moment #1: Hunnigan verifies Luis's identity

When Leon meets Luis, he tries his hardest to just ignore him and not engage in conversation with him at all, because he doesn't trust himself to make the right judgment call when it comes to interacting with people he meets on his missions. But he finally takes a chance and decides to trust his own judgment of Luis being shady, which Hunnigan confirms by revealing that he used to work for Umbrella. This is the first moment of many that Leon's gut instinct turned out to be right.

Doubt moment #2: Cabin sequence

This is a one-two punch of a gut instinct call to send Ashley away (which pays off when she saves both him and Luis) and then a risky decision to trust Luis, despite knowing that he's former Umbrella. He has to take this risk, because Ashley's plaga puts him in a position that forces him to make a decision. Either he trusts Luis, or he reports back to Hunnigan that Ashley's been infected.

And he knows exactly what happened the last time the government found out about a blonde girl under his care who was infected. (Really says a lot that he trusts an Umbrella researcher before the government he works for.)

Doubt moment #3: Mendez fight

Another decision to send Ashley away pays off when she, once again, comes back from the outside to save his ass. He gets a smile and a helping hand to his feet as a reward.

Now.

Because the lie that Leon believes is so strong due to the devastating nature and close proximity of his two negative arcs, his moments of doubt get tested over and over again as the lie attempts to pull him back in. This forces Leon to commit to his positive change, because those are his only two options -- either he commits, or he surrenders. And his desire to save Ashley outweighs the fear and anxiety caused by his lie.

So, even though Leon doesn't actually believe in himself, he has to tell himself that he does.

Test moment #1: Ashley gets possessed and then runs away from him in tears Test moment #2: Ada tells him he can't save Ashley

Failing these tests would bring him right back to the start of his character arc, which is surrender.

He passes both of those tests, but only barely. This is why he's terrified to the point of his voice shaking slightly when he starts giving Ashley the pep talk. He doesn't actually believe some of the things he's saying to her because his change hasn't yet taken place, but he needs her to believe that he does.

Test moment #3: Leon gets trapped in the cage Doubt moment #4: Ashley frees him from the cage

Before the camera cuts away from him in the cage, he has to take a trembling, steadying breath. He's still terrified. He still doesn't believe that he's making the right decisions.

But then yet another judgment call pays off, and -- after his three big tests, Ashley is the most beautiful sight he's ever seen when she appears on that balcony. She has consistently proved him wrong in the best possible ways, and she's what causes him to start to believe.

Test moment #4: Verdugo takes Ashley & Salazar's ritual

This is the first time that Leon not only passes his test, but he gets high marks on it. He's not nervous or unsure this time when he looks up from the floor of the waterway and says: "Hang in there, Ashley. I'm coming for you."

But we can't yet say that he's had his big change moment, because it all comes very close to crashing right back down.

Test moment #5: Krauser's introduction & Luis's death

Krauser's emergence rattles Leon so much that it almost undoes all of the progress of his character arc so far. Instinctually and intellectually, Leon knows that Krauser is an active threat who just killed a man in cold blood -- and yet he still refuses to face off against him in a serious way, and he still tries to talk reason into Krauser.

The lie has him in a tight grip here, because Krauser was someone whose judgment that Leon has always trusted better than his own. So, surely, this whole thing must just be a misunderstanding. He's convinced that he's perceiving the situation wrong.

But he's not. It's still just part of his lie.

And now, the lie gets reinforced again as he watches Luis die. At this point, Leon has no reason to believe that he can actually save anyone.

This is why he's so ready to lie down and surrender again when he finds Ashley unconscious on the cot. Even though he gets the suppressant to her and she responds to it well, as soon as Leon's own symptoms return, his first instinct is to sit down and prepare to shoot himself. His confidence is in the fucking dirt.

Doubt moment #5: Ashley wakes up

Ashley has been the source of all of his doubt moments up to this point, and so when she wakes up, it's such a powerful moment for him that it soothes the panic caused by Krauser's appearance and Luis's death. Leon re-commits to his positive change, but there's still one last thing that has to happen...

Change moment: Krauser fight

Much like Ada pointing a gun at him, Leon is forced to confront his lie head on. When Krauser actually says the words out loud: "Worried about the girl, is that it? That's just like you. You always had poor judgment." there's no avoiding it anymore.

Leon takes a look at Krauser -- someone whose judgment he once trusted unquestioningly -- and seeing how far he's fallen, while also considering just how much Ashley has proved his lie wrong over and over and over again, inspires real and lasting change in Leon's perception of himself and his place in the world around him.

Seeing where Krauser's judgment has gotten him and comparing it with where Leon's own judgment has gotten him makes it very obvious that there's a clear winner.

His change moment starts with the words: "Nah, time for the teacher to be taught." and ends with him plunging Krauser's own knife into his heart.

If Leon still believed any part of his lie, he wouldn't have been able to take the final, definitive step to end Krauser's life.

But it's a new day for him.

Reinforcement of change: Waking up in Luis's lab

This is the payoff for Leon's change. Because he believes in himself so definitively now, he's able to finally win against Saddler in a battle of wills. He pushes back the influence of the hivemind, makes it to Luis's lab, and successfully removes Ashley's plaga.

He actually, really did it.

And not only did he do that, but he did it so well that he inspired Ashley to do the same.

State of mind as a result of his change: I have sound judgment and can trust myself to make good decisions, irrespective of rank or institutional assistance. I, personally, as Leon and not Agent Kennedy, am capable of making a positive impact on a person's life.

Take a look back at the lie that he brought into RE2make with him.

Now re-read his endpoint after changing in RE4make.

Leon couldn't have saved Ashley without going through all of the changes that he did in between the start of RE2make and the end of RE4make. A guy with the attitude of "people are good and things will work themselves out" would have never been able to rescue someone from a violent, mind-controlling cult.

So Leon had to change into someone who could.

That is what a character arc does. That is the purpose.
