Solo Marvel Champions is My New Main
I knew I had to jump into Marvel Champions from the beginning.
My all-time favorite game, Android: Netrunner, had just died an ignoble death. So my budget had a bit of an opening for a new LCG. I knew X-Men were coming eventually, and if I didn't jump in at the beginning, I'd need to go back and bulk buy eventually.
So I was one of the first in line for the original core set. And I mostly kept up with the hero packs. My normal game group even played a decent amount of it. It was even fine to play solo. I tended to go two-handed (playing two characters) because it gave me access to more cards, and covered some of the weaknesses a single hero would have.
And the game was... fine? Better than average definitely. Possibly a little too long. A little fiddly. And sometimes hard to keep track of all the rules exceptions. And like a lot of co-op games, you sort of knew the outcome way before the game ended.
I really liked how each hero deck really made you feel like playing that specific hero. But with all the little fiddliness of the game, it never really took over as the main game in our group.
And then Magic's 2022 happened.
2022 was supposed to be the best Magic year ever. We had a killer cyberpunk set coming out. Another Commander Legends set. Revisiting one of my favorite sets (Dominaria) and getting the Phyrexians back in a big way.
I was expecting to go broke on all this amazing content. But then something weird happened. I stopped getting excited about Magic.
I think product fatigue had something to do with it. But so did the abject money grubbing from Wizards. Neon Dynasty was a great set, but I didn't love raising prices on Commander decks. I lived Baldur's Gate more than most, but I didn't even acknowledge that Double Masters released. None of the main sets actually excited me like I expected. And then the 30th Anniversary packs happened.
2022 started as the most excited I'd been about Magic in a long time, and ended up with me barely registering new releases. For the foreseeable future I'm just going to buy a card or two that fit into existing commander decks.
In Walks True Solo Marvel Champions
Into this vacuum came Marvel Champions. X-Men finally hits the shelves with a new box featuring my favorite character (Shadowcat). The encounters are interesting and thematic. I even get a Mojo pack.
I definitely wanted to play some more Champions - but tracking all the nuances of Mojo was mentally taxing for two-handed solo. I had always been a little hesitant to play true-solo (one-handed, one character), but I thought I'd give it a try.
And oh boy is it the absolute best.
I'll still play multi-player Champions (2 or 3 players please), but I've been playing a ton of solo Champions recently. For a game where the designers explicitly state they don't test as a solo game, it's amazing how much gets fixed when you go solo:
There is no downtime between turns. You are always active.
The villain phase doesn't take too long either.
There is still a lot going on, but the amount of abilities and actions onboard never getting too overwhelming like they do with multiple players and encounter cards.
Games are FAST. Solo Champions does not overstay it's welcome.
Games are swingy. Because of the lower thresholds on the main scheme, you can go from in control to absolutely devastated in a single villain phase.
That last point might be a negative for some people, but I think it makes the game significantly better. No more are you simply going through the motions in the final three rounds. You never know what will happen.
Playing true solo has taken this from a game I like, but struggle to get to the table, to a game a love and can't wait to set up immediately after I get smashed by Ultron for the billionth time.
Currently Playing:
Storm Protection - It's Raining Multiple Men Captain America Aggression - Overkill Anonymous Miles Morales Justice - Confuse and Kill Spider-Woman Leadership/Justice - SHIELD Sneak Attack
Regular Villains:
Ultron with Under Attack Mutagen Formula with Sinister Syndicate

Sweet Dreams
Billy likes sleeping. Just as any normal human child would. Unfortunately though, he’s not a normal human child. He juggles two jobs, Whiz Kid and the JL. Technically three if he counts patrol and actually being a hero in Fawcett as separate from the JL. Point is, he does a lot of stuff and sleeping is a wonderful to refresh himself. So, one day, he tried to get sleep as Marvel to make up for that lost time.
Then, the dream started.
Marvel: “Zeus? What are you wearing?”
Zeus: “Huh?” * looks down at his clothes* “The heck… Billy this is your dream. Why did you make me appear like this?”
Marvel: “Maybe because I didn’t expect to see you?”
Zeus: “Why wouldn’t you- Oh wait. You’ve never slept in your Champion form have you?”
Marvel: “No?”
Zeus: “Yeah, that’s what I thought. Come.” *gestures for him to follow and starts to walk off*
Marvel: *follows*
Zeus: “See, Batson, whenever Champions fall asleep, that can allow their patron gods to invade their dreams. That’s actually with me and the others are doing right now!”
Marvel: “Oh uh cool?”
They played some cards, and yelled at each other about how people were cheating. Solomon won nearly every game. Except Uno which Mercury somehow won. There was a lot more suspicion of cheating when that happened. They then just sat in a circle like preteens at a slumber party and started gossiping about the other gods and goddesses from both Greek and other mythology. All in all, it was basically a sleepover, and if Billy was being honest, he didn’t hate it. Though, what he did hate was the fact that when he woke up he felt even more tired then before he went to sleep.
He noticed this was a pattern after a couple more times of him trying to make up for lost sleep as Marvel. As a result, Billy started kicking himself out of the dreams so he could actually sleep. The gods didn’t like this because Billy was apparently a chill little guy to hang out with. He of course, still said no, but you see, the Gods can be really, really… annoying when you say no to them.
Marvel: *sitting on a roof in Fawcett*
Zeus: “JOIN US!”
Marvel: “No.”
Achilles: “Please, Batson?”
Marvel: “No.”
Solomon: “Billy, please don’t leave me alone with them.”
Marvel: “Sorry, Solly. Still no.”
Solomon: “Again with that nickname…” *honestly doesn’t know whether he likes or hates it*
Zeus: “Wait, why is Solomon the only one who gets an apology?”
Marvel: “He’s the only one I feel bad for.”
Zeus: “WHA-”
This made Zeus mad so he pettily took away Billy’s ability to use lightning as Marvel. The Batson boy went a week before he caved and hung out with them in his dreams again.
Zeus: “You’re here!”
Marvel: *frowniest frown on his face*
He was then sequestered away by Zeus to watch Achilles and Hercules have a hot dog eating contest.
Mercury: “Who do you think is gonna win, Bill? We can have a bet!”
Marvel: “I don’t have any money to bet.”
Atlas: “Yes, Hermes. You forget he’s a… how do humans nowadays say it? Ah right. A brokie.”
Marvel: “Atlas, you just fell so hard down my favorites list your below Zeus now.”
Atlas: *extremely offended* “BELOW ZEUS?!”
Zeus: “HA!” *literally points and laughs*
The Next Day…
Wondy: “Brother, is something wrong? I’ve never seen you drink coffee before.”
Marvel: “I spent my night watching Achilles and Hercules shove hotdogs down their throats to see who could out-eat the other. Meanwhile, Atlas and Zeus were fist-fighting in one corner while Mercury kept trying to coerce me into making a bet with him, even though I had literally no money to make said bet.”
Wondy: “Oh.”
Marvel: “Yeah. Oh.” *sips his coffee* “Anyways, how was your night?”

nike cabin headcanons
children of nike
• they ALWAYS wear nike and are offended when other campers wear other sports brands like adidas or under armour.
• contrary to popular belief, the children of victory aren't just victorious at everything, they have to work twice as hard as everyone else, then nike helps them out once she's seen that they've really tried their absolute best.
• they are able to identify their opponent’s weaknesses just by looking at them.
• every time there's a world cup of any sport, chiron has to put a gigantic tv in the big house because they WILL riot if he doesn't.
• demigods receive a special card that gives them discounts at all nike stores. if you're her child, you get to test out the new shoes as they're making them.
• they have random game nights in their cabin but because they’re all to proud to loose, it always ends up in fights and arguments.
• everyone who has ever won the olympics is somehow related to nike or has received a blessing from her.
• sore losers. all of them.
• nike claims her children with a shining laurel crown with "we are the champions" playing triumphantly in the background.
• in relationships, they are always the first to say "i love you."
• they have amazing grades because they try so hard to be the best in each class.
• nike grows more powerful by the day, as the brand becomes so popular worldwide, she’s just strolling around on olympus in limited edition jordan’s.
• demigod athletes have to wear nike apparel (whatever is required for their respective sport) or risk losing.
• they have a form of probability manipulation, similar to domino (from marvel), though not as powerful.
• they also have tactile vision, allowing them to see multiple possible outcomes and their chances of success, allowing them to choose the best strategy.
cabin exterior
• the most prominent feature would be large, golden wings spread across the front of the cabin, symbolizing nike’s role as the goddess of victory. these wings shimmer in the sunlight, radiating an aura of triumph.
• the cabin has sleek marble columns in front, resembling an ancient greek stadium or a temple, reflecting the athletic and competitive spirit of nike. the marble is polished and gleaming, representing perfection and excellence.
• the walls of the cabin are adorned with intricate carvings of laurel wreaths, an ancient symbol of victory and honor. these wrap around the windows and doorways, giving the cabin a regal, triumphant look.
• flags and banners surround the cabin, each representing different types of victories: athletic, battle, and personal achievements. they flutter in the wind, constantly shifting as new victories are celebrated by the children of victory.
• eternal flames in sleek, bronze cauldrons flank the cabin’s entrance, symbolizing the ongoing pursuit of victory. these flames could burn brightly, reminiscent of the olympic flame, representing the endless drive for success.
• the entire cabin could have subtle gold accents— door handles, window frames, and even gold leaf in the carvings— that glisten in the sunlight, representing the rewards and glory that come with victory.
cabin interior
• the walls are lined with shelves and cases filled with trophies, medals, and awards. these range from ancient relics symbolizing past victories to more modern trophies from recent camper accomplishments in camp activities and quests.
• the cabin has an area dedicated to fitness and training, featuring weights, punching bags, and other athletic equipment. the children of victory are encouraged to always stay in peak physical condition, with personal training goals and schedules.
• in the corners of the room, there are statues of nike in various poses, each holding a different symbol of victory, such as a palm branch, a laurel wreath, or a pair of wings. these statues would inspire her children to pursue greatness.
• their beds are sleek, with black and gold color schemes. each bed has a personal shelf where a camper can display small tokens of their individual victories, like medals or keepsakes from successful quests.
• the lights hanging from the ceiling are shaped like laurel wreaths, softly glowing in gold. this symbolizes the constant chase for victory, illuminating the cabin with an energy of ambition.
cabin traditions
• at the end of every week, they hold a "victory tally" where campers gather to recount their personal and group wins. each member gets a chance to share their victories, no matter how big or small— whether they aced a sparring match, helped in a quest, or dominated in capture the flag.
• after significant victories— be it a camp-wide event like capture the flag, a quest, or an individual competition— they hold a laurel crowning ceremony.
• the victor is is crowned with a handmade laurel wreath by the head of the cabin. this ceremony is held in front of the cabin as a symbol of personal glory, accompanied by cheering and applause. the wreath is displayed in the cabin until the next victory.
• once a month, the cabin organizes their own "olympics" with a full day dedicated to competition. events include everything from traditional sports like footraces and discus throws to more camp-centric activities like archery, sword fighting, and obstacle courses.
• everyone competes fiercely, and the winners are awarded medals made by hephaestus cabin. it’s not only about winning but also about pushing yourself to the limit in true nike fashion.
• every year, they hold an annual wing race in honor of their mother’s iconic wings. campers compete in a series of races across different terrains: foot races, obstacle courses, and long-distance endurance races. the winner earns the coveted title of "wingbearer" for the year, and they get to wear a pair of specially-crafted, decorative wings (created by hephaestus cabin) during important camp ceremonies and events.
• every winter solstice, they light a large brazier outside their cabin with a special flame called the flame of victory. this flame must be kept burning throughout the winter until the first day of spring.
• the entire cabin works together to defend the flame, but other campers are allowed to "challenge" them by attempting to put out the flame in mock battles. if the flame stays lit until spring, it’s seen as a sign of endurance and strength, and a special celebration is held.
• for campers who achieve monumental victories, the cabin has a tradition of getting small, magical tattoos (thanks to a collaboration with the hephaestus cabin) that symbolize their greatest triumphs.
• these could be small laurel wreaths, wings, or other symbols of nike. each tattoo glows faintly gold and serves as a reminder of their greatest achievements. only major victories like quests or major camp events qualify for a victory tattoo.

Snippet 3

KaibaCorp Dreams of Another World
May 28
“It’s not a question of what’s next. It’s what’s happening right now. Right in front of you.”
These are the words from the seventeen-year old visionary Seto Kaiba, known worldwide as the reigning Duel Monsters champion and CEO of KaibaCorp (TSE:KBA). His advice seems perfect for this moment: he is standing right in front of a gigantic dragon. It is screaming and ready to attack and he is fearless.
The creature in question is one of three in the world that belong to the young CEO: Blue Eyes White Dragon, a rare Duel Monsters card and the star of KaibaCorp’s impromptu demonstration of its latest project: Scheherazade.
Named after the fabled storyteller of “One Thousand and One Nights,” Scheherazade is as much a technological marvel as it is a philosophical leap forward. The platform creates immersive worlds drawn from both written stories and players’ own memories, merging fiction and reality into a seamless experience. A combination of machine learning, memory recall, and advanced simulation technology allows the system to respond and adapt for real-time, constant immersion. While virtual reality has been evolving steadily over the past decade, Scheherazade’s memory integration takes it to another level, with unprecedented possibilities for storytelling, education, and, of course, gaming.
Its most immediate application will be for duelists, offering fully interactive Duel Monsters matches in an arena where the creatures seem to step out of the cards and into life. Industry insiders speculate that this move could put KaibaCorp at the forefront of both gaming and virtual reality, potentially outpacing rivals like Industrial Illusions (NYSE:ILL) and Meta (NASDAQ: META).
This is the latest in the bold new direction forged under young Kaiba’s leadership, which transformed KaibaCorp from an arms contractor to a tech powerhouse, pioneering innovations at the intersection of telecommunications, augmented reality and entertainment. KaibaCorp’s origins date back to the post-World War II era when it rose to prominence as a leading arms manufacturer, standing just behind global defence giants like Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Northrop Grumman Corp (NYSE: NOC). The company’s previous success in the defence sector is often credited to the founding family’s deeply personal experience with war: Ryu Kaiba, KaibaCorp’s founder, served in Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service during Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour. The war also impacted his son, the late Gozaburo Kaiba, who was one of the 650,000 survivors of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
The latter half of the twentieth-century saw KaibaCorp as a bastion of military technology, supplying weapons to governments around the world. Yet the company was perpetually mired in controversy, and a frequent target of political outcry for its contributions to war and conflict. Protests frequently accompanied its business dealings, which placed it at the centre of public debate about the ethics of arms dealership. It is speculated that mounting pressure and dwindling public support factored into the shocking suicide of Gozaburo Kaiba, who jumped to his death from the KaibaCorp headquarters during a meeting with the company’s board of directors.
This tragedy would make it the third time Seto Kaiba had lost a parent. Gozaburo Kaiba adopted both the current KaibaCorp CEO and his younger brother, KaibaCorp’s Senior Manager of Technology Operations, Mokuba Kaiba, following the deaths of their parents. Their mother died of eclampsia while giving birth to Mokuba, and their father was killed in a car accident in the infamous Izumo Earthquake Disaster.
Seto Kaiba succeeded Gozaburo as CEO of KaibaCorp at fifteen, making him the youngest person to ever lead a billion-dollar company. His youth left him no shortage of ideas, and he set the company on course for a seismic shift in focus. He went on a buying spree, absorbing a staggering number of promising computer technology companies in his first quarter as CEO. He also terminated operations at KaibaCorp’s global weapons testing centres and completely divested the company from projects supporting armed conflict. These actions led KaibaCorp to several high-profile lawsuits for defaulting on its contracts and sales agreements. These disputes were settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
Between the payouts, acquisitions and lack of customers, KaibaCorp was teetering on financial ruin. The company was saved with Kaiba’s most notable innovation: SolidVision, the holographic projection technology that brought Duel Monsters to life. This was followed by the Duel Disk, a revolutionary p2p interface that allowed duelists to compete in real-time holographic battles, becoming a staple for competitive players across the world. These commercial successes catapulted KaibaCorp into global fame and made Duel Monsters a cultural phenomenon, while signalling KaibaCorp’s new mission: to create, not destroy.
This pursuit has now brought KaibaCorp to the verge of another groundbreaking moment. Scheherazade, set to roll out this summer, will first be available at stadiums and theme parks before making its way into homes through a specialised hardware release. Duelists and VR enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting the chance to immerse themselves in the fully realised worlds this technology promises to deliver.
In many ways, KaibaCorp’s evolution is as poetic as it is fascinating. What was once a company defined by its contribution to destruction is now positioned to offer the world a new way of seeing itself, through stories, memories, and duels.
“This is just the beginning. Scheherazade isn’t just a virtual space—it’s a new frontier for human imagination. It’s the bridge between what we can dream and what we can live.”
And in that, perhaps, lies Kaiba’s greatest victory: transforming a company of war into one that makes dreams reality.
______
The article featured two captioned pictures. Duel Monster Blue Eyes White Dragon, rendered in Scheherazade: a still of him pulled from the testing zone broadcast, looking up at Blue Eyes White Dragon. He was surprised at the lack of fear on his face– the light from the White Lightning Attack had washed every emotion into brightness. He was just vacant, ready, waiting. He was more expressive in the second photograph: Father and son. One of the last before Gozaburo’s death. The man had a hand on his shoulder and was sneering down at him. Kaiba, fifteen, slanted his face to return his contempt, the corner of his mouth barely lifted in a matching, cruel smirk.

Let's go ahead and indulge our inner hipsters for a bit.
In the Marvel Champions card game Valkyrie isn't considered... the best. In fact, I think most players consider her near the bottom of the tier list - only keeping herself from the bottom of the list by standing on the massive, disappointing back of The Hulk.
But that's the beauty of playing non-competitive, and mostly-solo, games. We can experiment with the things competitive folks would just throw away.
And then we get to sit back, smugly, when we actually figure out how to crack her.
So Why Valkyrie?
On the surface, Valkyrie's core 15 seems fine.
She's got 3 big, direct damage cards that can get overkill.
She's got card draw that also finds minions the lean into her slayer strategy.
She's got two cards that can remove 5 threat from any scheme.
She's even got upgrades that give +4 HP and can turn her into a 4 ATK monster.
So Why NOT Valkyrie?
With all of these amazing tools at her disposal, shouldn't Valkyrie be a monster? At least a average role-player? Some characters aren't necessarily the strongest (especially in solo play) - but on the surface, Valkyrie doesn't seem like the coaster she's positioned as being.
Well, her natural stat line doesn't help anything. 1/2/1 doesn't inspire much confidence - and unfortunately also implies a couple downstream issues.
First off, 1 DEF means you're going to get smacked around. Her natural 12 HP is better than average, but you'll still need to flip down every once in a while to stay alive.
But with only 1 THW that flip down can be devastating.
Which is why it is so surprising that some of her core kit only works in Alt Ego.
And even all those good cards we mentioned above - most of them only work if you have attached your "Death Glow" to a target. This is a tempo hit, and you'll often find Death Glow is on the wrong enemy at the wrong time.
Oh yeah, and if you hit Shadows of the Past, it's basically game over. Enchantress is probably the most lopsidedly unfair nemesis in the game.
So we've got some struggles.
Leadership to the Rescue
With all of this headwind, I think the best aspect to lean into is Leadership. It's already the most naturally powerful aspect. And allies help mitigate the immediate need of threat removal and defense.
But there are also a couple archetype cards in leadership that synergize in a nice, odd way with Valkyrie - and even let us stay in Alt Ego for longer.
Sky Cycle: While slapping the Sky Cycle/Honorary Avenger combo onto Annabelle Riggs isn't as good as it is with Wong, you still get to draw two additional cards per turn. This is amazing for a hero kit that doesn't have built-in resource generators.
Sneak Attack: Rapid Response is probably the best leadership card, but Sneak Attack is my favorite. This doesn't do a ton for us on defense, but getting thwart machines like Falcon fulfill their role for a fraction of the price. This card is really interesting for Valkyrie in particular because she is Asgard traited even in Alt Ego. That means you can drop absolute bombs like Heimdall and Beta Ray Bill to keep things in order while flipped down. (Pro tip: slap your backup Honorary Avenger on Valkyrie and she can sneak in Avangers allies when flipped down too).
Command Team: Command Team is kind of a natural fit for sneak attack decks anyway, but here you can get some extra value with Annabelle. If drawing 2 extra cards a turn is good, drawing 4 has to be better... right?
Band Together: I tend not to consider resource cards are cornerstones of any deck. Having more resources is good - yay! But I think two copies of Band Together are really special in this deck. Since you want to keep Annabelle on the board forever, it's easy to get the full three allies in play. And even when you're short, Sneak Attack lets you quickly get back to quorum. Band Together ends up being a great bridge to help change your quick tempo plays with Sneak Attack into more stable resource building (ie. Avengers Tower), or to turn the corner for the killing blow with "Have At Thee."
Let's be honest with each other for a minute.
Valkyrie still isn't a top-level contender in Marvel Champions. Her kit has so many internal contradictions that she'll never be able to stand toe-to-toe with Dr. Strange, Captain America, and Miles Morales.
But that doesn't mean she can't be successfully built.
I think this deck is really interesting. Does it have a 90% win ratio? Nope. Not at all.
But it does feel competitive in most scenarios. And more importantly, it's fun.
So don't give up on the "also rans" of Marvel Champions. I think if you spend some time in the Island of Misfit Toys, you'll probably find something that is more fun to play with that that infinite combo Ant-Man deck... again.

After the announcement of the Marvel/Magic the gathering set I've been doing a lot of thinking about the manner of Marvel's representations in other mediums.
There's 3 other Marvel card games (Champions, Legendary, and Snap) and a cinematic universe. Across 4 versions we have 1 single line that defines Loki as bi, and despite fem-presenting versions of Loki being important to the MCU no sign of Loki's Genderfluidity appears *anywhere*. We even got artwork from Agent of Asgard in Snap, but it's Masc Loki. Because acknowledging the queerness of their comics isn't something Marvel wants to do. And it frustrates me immensely. It's cowardly.

ideas for marvel snap seasons
hello! ive been playing a lot more marvel snap recently, and ive had a bunch of ideas for new seasons and some new cards that could be in those seasons. i am in no way a game designer, so im not going to give characters or locations effects.
Each season has:
One main card (the season pass card)
Four other new cards (spotlight cache cards)
two older cards featured in the season pass with new varients
two new locations
one other additional rule - one of each season's cache cards is usually more of a lesser known character, or someone out of left field. I have kept this in mind for these upcoming season ideas.
Civil War
Season Pass Card: Tigra
Spotlight Cache Card: Songbird
Spotlight Cache Card: Goliath
Spotlight Cache Card: Wonder Man
Spotlight Cache Card: Aunt May
Featured Pass Card: Spider-Man (Iron Spider Variant)
Featured Pass Card: Thor (Ragnarok Variant)
New Location: Secret Avenger's Base
New Location: SHEILD Prison
2. Secret Wars
Season Pass Card: Frankin Richards
Spotlight Cache Card: Valeria Richards
Spotlight Cache Card: Molecule Man
Spotlight Cache Card: The Beyonder

Marvel Champions is the only board/card game I really enjoy playing solo. It's also one of the games I ever played where the mechanism best corresponds to the source material. It really feels like a convoluted comic book mashup every time I play.
I just got myself SP//dr, aka Peni Parker and her psychically linked radioactive spider friend and kickass robot suit. Time to kick bad guy butt, anime style.
