Home Alone (1990, Chris Columbus)
28/12/2023
Home Alone is a 1990 film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus.
Home Alone premiered in Chicago on November 10, 1990 and was released in U.S. theaters on November 16. The film grossed $476.7 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing live-action comedy until the release of The Hangover Part II (2011), and made child actor Macaulay Culkin a celebrity. Furthermore, it was the second highest-grossing film of 1990, behind Ghost. It was nominated for two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture for Culkin. A sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, was released in 1992.
Chicago, Illinois. The McCallister family, made up of the spouses Peter and Kate and their children Buzz, Jeff, Megan, Linnie and Kevin (the youngest, but often resented and ridiculed by everyone), is about to leave for Paris to spend the Christmas holidays from Peter's brother Rob, married to Georgette and father of Steffan and twins. The evening before departure they are joined by Frank, another brother of Peter, who lives in Ohio with his wife Leslie and their children Tracy, Sondra, Brooke and Fuller. Heather and Rob, Rob's children who remained in the United States, who want to reunite with their families for the Christmas holidays, will also leave with them. During the family dinner before departure, Kevin has a brief scuffle with his older brother Buzz, guilty of having eaten all his cheese pizza that he had ordered. That same night, a powerful gust of wind causes a tree branch to break and fall onto electricity wires, deactivating the alarm clocks and causing a blackout.
In the confusion created to arrive at the airport in time, no one notices the absence of Kevin, still asleep in the attic, who is later mistaken by his cousin Heather for a neighbor child who has come to say goodbye to the family. Taking advantage of the absence of his family, the child decides to let off steam, doing everything he had always been forbidden to do: jumping on his parents' bed, eating junk food, rummaging through Buzz's things and watching gangster films.
Meanwhile, Kevin discovers that the neighborhood where he lives has been targeted by Harry Lime and Marv Merchants, a couple of thieves who are taking advantage of the holiday period to raid homes, after the former, disguised as a policeman, pretends to an inspection and getting as much information as possible from the owners. The two criminals usually plug the drains and leave the taps open, causing flooding in the houses they rob as a sort of "signature", for which they are nicknamed "Wet Bandits". Meanwhile, after landing in Paris, Kate chooses to stay at the airport in the hope that a seat will open up on a flight so she can return to the United States immediately, while Peter goes to his brother Rob with the rest of his relatives to let their children rest. The days pass and Kevin begins to become familiar with the domestic environment: he goes shopping, does the laundry and also prepares the Christmas tree.
Meanwhile, om Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv finally realize that the boy is alone and want to break into the house that same evening, at 9:00 pm. In the meantime, Kate, having managed to leave, stops first in Dallas and then in Scranton, where, however, she is unable to find a seat on any flight to Chicago.

Imagine if by chance, Kevin runs into one of his siblings while in Gotham, but by this point, Kevin goes by the surname Merchants rather than McCallister. He's still very much attached to Harry and Marv, but he learns that his family never forgot about him. Let's say he makes plans to reveal himself to them, but only after avenging Harry and Marv.
He gets picked up by Bill and gets a job at Alex's Cafe. It turns out he's great with repairing things and works as their 5 repair guy, Alex and Kevin bond over coffee. Kevin meets Tim on multiple occasions while doing his job, one time even holding a conversation with both Alex and Tim while working in the guts of a machine crucial to Tim's coffee addiction. Then, one day, Tim sees Bill picking up Kevin and goes through the motions that his favorite Cafe's repair guy could potentially also be a goon.
Red Hood accidentally triggers Kevin's traps when he invades Bill's apartment while they are out. They find him stuck on the ceiling. He needed information, and getting it from Bill was an easy solution. Red Hood still gets his Intel, but now Bill has blackmail on him as the rest of the Bats would NEVER let him forget this if they knew. At the same time, Jason is very tempted to see if the kid would set something similar up in his apartment to prevent unwanted familial visits.
I would like to propose an idea, you don't have to take it seriously, but it's an idea.
What if Old Man Marley wasn't there to rescue Kevin, and the Wet Bandits chose to simply abduct the trapper, the new plan having been to ransom Kevin for a good payout. Marv, however, makes the suggestion that they take the money, keep Kevin, and fake their deaths. The duo use a pipe bomb, their trusty old van, and a few deceased homeless people to make their great escape.
That was seven years ago, Kevin spent his first three years as an unwilling guest of the duo, and then Stockholm Syndrome kicked in. At the age of fifteen, Kevin loses his second family after a job goes wrong in Gotham when Harry and Marv attempt to burglarize the seemly abandoned Zsasz Manor only to run into Victor Zsasz himself.
It's a bit darker, considerably darker, but with his birth family being alive and yet he is presumed dead. The Wet Bandits had a better and longer run of things, it all ended when they ran into Victor Zsasz. Now Kevin has to start from scratch, maybe there's a Cafe hiring or something?
Oh wow I love this idea so much actually!! There's a fanfic that was actually recommended to me by a different anon that involved the idea of Kevin being taken by Harry and Marv and having Stokholm syndrome!! It was super cool to read, but throwing Batman into that, is so cool to think about!! This is actually the fic I was given from back then!! https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12813426/1/Home-is-Where-the-Heart-is
But to continue on, I imagine Kevin's got some amount of funds to help himself out for a bit before he needs to 100% worry about being on the streets. Since this is 7 years after the first home alone, this means that Kevin is 16 (he was 9 at that time), so it's not suspicious for someone his age to get a job.
He'd definitely be on the young side if he ends up doing goon work, but Kevin would more than likely not stick to a villain for too long a time so he can avoid being recognized. Kevin's a caring kid, and probably was made to believe his family has moved on and so to him Harry and Marv are much more important. So instead of trying to reconnect with his actual family, he's going for revenge against Victor Zsasz. He's just trying to get all his ducks in a row first, and avoid being found out by his bosses/the batfam.

And now - the famous Home Alone traps.
Of course, people were joking about Kevin McCallister’s sadistic tendencies on multiple ways over the years (just last year I’ve seen a Facebook post comparing the kid to Jigsaw). And probably a child doesn’t see Kevin’s traps as bad or disturbing, because hey, he’s defending his house from crooks who probably mean him harm...
But when you’re a bit older you start to imagine how painful it is for Harry and Marv. Just the image of Harry’s head getting burnt or Marv’s naked foot stepping on a nail gives you shivers, because you imagine it happening to you. Then you get various videos on how many times the Wet Bandits would die from those traps, and you’re horrified. As we learn in the second movie, Marv actually got a brain damage from this encounter.
Personally I never liked the traps scenes all that much. It was my least favorite part of Home Alone, and mostly because I found it too long. This didn’t change over the years.
