Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon — Part 1’ Debuts With Decent 24M Views; ‘Maestro’ Fails to Find Audience [Updated] — World of Reel

Bad reviews be damned, Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” is a semi success on Netflix.

The streaming giant announced that the sci-fi fantasy was the most viewed title on the platform since its debut the night of December 21, garnerning 23.9 million views in three days.

This is a decent start for what will be, Snyder hopes, a mega franchise constituting of a handful of films. Then again, the recent “Leave the World Behind” did 42 million views in its first three days. You be the judge.

Snyder wants ‘Rebel Moon’ to be his own Star Wars. The next instalment, ‘Part Two: The Scargiver,’ streams on April 19, 2024.

However, IndieWire’s Tom Brueggemann says the buried lede here is that Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” considered an Oscar contender, and given a nationwide, four-week theatrical release, dropped out of the Netflix top 10 after only four days.

“Maestro” is positioned as Netflix’s top Oscar contender. With Cooper’s attachment, and the film’s good reviews and publicity, this was supposed to be a no-brainer buzz title for the streamer. That hasn’t happened.

I’ve already tackled the lacklustre audience response for “Maestro.” Outside of film critic circles, the reactions to Cooper’s film have been rather blah. It currently has a 6.8 on IMDb, 73% audience rating on RT and tepid 3.3 score on Letterboxd. The reason for these middling scores might be that “Maestro” is very much an arthouse film that attempts to defy biopic cliches

I really didn’t like almost any of the 2023 films I saw this year! Napoleon was probably my most enjoyed (it’s so fun and pissy) and I think May December was probably imo the best of the ones I saw (charles melton def deserved a nom)

Barbie killers of flower moon oppenheimer MAESTRO were not good imo. Bradley cooper is sooooo thirsty and tbh i thought marstro played on a lot of biphobic tropes thats put me off (though carey mulligan was quite good. Matt bomer was also excellent in his small role). Lily gladstone was also quite good but her role was so diminished and i think scorsese was too interested in his whote guy gamgster plot to do justice to the topic (his little speech at the end rings very false). Barbie was not well made. Ryan was good for what it was but not nearly good wnough for best actor. Oppen i thought was very poorly constructed and i dont think cillian was that great. Passable yes but not great. The period details were also very poor.

R.I.P. Ennio Morricone (1928-2020)

Ennio Morricone, it was announced today (06-07-2020), has died in his hometown of Rome at the age of 91.

He was one of, if not, the greatest film composers of all time. In his illustrious 70 year career he's scored just more than 500 films.

Known by Italians simply as "The Marstro", he will surely be missed by filmmakers and filmgoers alike.

Some words of my own: Morricone has scored some of my favourite films of all time from Cinema Paradiso to The Thing. He was a wonderful man full of love and emotion and wanted only to share that with the world. He was able to create emotions in you that you had never felt before but understand instinctively. He had such need to create he was still working up until his death. Never failing to conquer his fears of growing older by winning an oscar in 2016 at 87! His only oscar award for one of his specific projects. He's an inspiration to me and so many more. He shall never be forgotten by time and I implore you just today, if you can. Think of a feeling. You don't know what is but you want to find out more. You're curious, what does it mean. Now listen to a Morricone score and find the answer.
